Salt pile Port Headland (Blogg) Liz’s Blog June 23rd Well, it’s been a couple of days and we now have a plan. We are still in Fitzroy Crossing and spent most of yesterday on the phone to Insurance, BMW Australia and freight companies. The only radiators that fit the bike are in Sydney and will take at least a week to get here. The Insurance want to assess the bike before they will pay for repairs so we have decided to freight it to Perth. We will ride the other bike 2 up to meet it there. Unfortunately we have to wait until Thursday to put it on the truck, but other than that it’s all g, as Rhys would say. Trevor is out there now changing the GPS to my bike and we changed over the bigger panniers, and top box to my bike as well. We won’t be able to take all our gear so I get to decide what we might do without. Trevor thinks we need it all !!! Tomorrow we have to tow the broken bike down to the truckie stop and tie it on to a pallet for pick-up and then it’s off to sunny Broome, it’s only about 400km away. I’m not looking forward to towing the bike tomorrow but once that’s done it’ll be all go. Quick look at Geikie gorge this afternoon. It’s about 20km from Fitzroy Crossing. A naturally formed gorge with the usual red rocks, crocs, birds, bugs, snakes, frogs and tourists. It has lots of walks and runs a tourist cruise down the river for $28per person. We decided on just a walk around, which in the heat of the day didn’t last long. We made it down to the river’s edge where we disturbed a flock of cockatoos , got chased by a huge wasp like thing and made a quick retreat back to the bike. The gorge was pretty but I’m afraid it was lost on us due to the heat and bugs. Now it’s back to the local roadhouse for an ice cream, something for tea, and bed. Liz’s Blog 24th Woke up this morning to the news that Australia was about to oust their PM – Kevin Rudd and replace him with his deputy Julia Gillard. The TV was full of it, and frankly we were really surprised as we had been watching him on parliament TV yesterday and he was an amazing speaker, no matter what your politics are. There had been lots of talk on the news about his unpopularity because of the mine super tax and failing to get an ETS through but nobody thought it would come to this, especially when there is an election due in the next few months. What was really fascinating was the reaction of the Australian people, they felt it wasn’t the “aussy way” to oust a PM and they didn’t know if they were ready to have a woman PM. His concession speech was very emotional, he was gutted. However, enough of that, I need to turn the telly off and get going. Our first mission was to tow the bike down to the freight company. I was towing and Trevor on his bike. It started off well, we got most of the way but on the last turn it just got too much, you know the old whiplash thing so I chickened out and Trevor had to push it the last ? block. We then had to tie the bike on to a pallet. Not the easiest when the bike was bigger than the pallet. We decided to lie it down as it was the least likely to get damaged when lifted by the forklift on to the truck. After an hour of mucking around, tying and re tying we finished. Quick photo for prosperity. Now it’s quick, back to the lodge, pack up my bike and check out by 10am. Finally on our way to Broome !!! I must say it was a bit of a challenge to climb on – there were 2 large panniers, each with a camel back strapped on top, the top box on the back, and both Trevor and I in riding gear. We had to get our leg up high enough and slide it over the seat while hopping on the other foot until you are far enough over to push the last little bit and reach the foot peg on the other side. Then slide up so you can get your bum in the right place. Getting off is the reverse. Once there it’s a bit like an armchair, with the top box as a back rest and the camel backs on each side as arm rests, not much room to move but very stable. Anyway about 400km later, lots of termite mounds, scrub surrounded roads and baobab trees we reached Broome, confirmed shipping with the shipping company, the bike should be in Perth Tues/Wednesday and found another very expensive cabin to stay in. Tomorrow it’s Port Hedland. Liz’s Blog – Friday 25th Today is a long one – 613km, and the forecast is for 32 degrees. We decided on an early start, a quick lap around Broome to see any sights that we might have missed, then the Roebucks roadhouse for fuel and go directly to Port Hedland. Unfortunately on our tour around Broome we spotted a MacDonalds, and worse, it’s open at 7am in the morning. Trevor’s big weakness – the MacDonald hotcake is calling to him, so much for our early start. We finally finished breakfast and managed to get to Roebucks an hour later, filled up , next stop the Sandfire roadhouse in 290km for more fuel. We went all out to get to the Sandfire as it was so far away, we wanted to get it under our belt/ We managed one rest stop, at which I managed to fall off trying to Lombadina Historic Mission Church--Dampier Peninsular--Broome- - One from the Archives, The Lombadina Community was established as a partnering community for the monks Beagle Bay mission. They constructed a church here also, using different materials from the area. The walls are constructed using wood from the nearby mangroves and the roof, now covered in corrugated iron, was initially paperbark. In modern times, Lombadina and the neighbouring settlements have embraced commercial opportunities such as tourism and the manufacture and sale of hand-made items like jewellery, dugout canoes and other artefact's. We stayed at this community for a couple of nights in clean 50's style motel unit/donga, It is a tidy and clean community with clean well serviced accommodation. We did find however that they lacked in hospitality, nearly the opposite, the most we could get out of the locals was a forced return hello. This was in contrast to the community next door (a couple of K) at Chile Creek, who were most hospitable, informative and only to happy to point out the local scenery, like the petrified Forrest (no it was not that frightened ::--)), We watched Porpoise train their young in the Lagoon and Chile Creek it was truly a photographers dream come true. One of the Managers John is on the board of the Broome Footy club. Construction & Launch Construction & Launch In 1956, P&O asked a number of large British shipbuilders to tender for a new liner to operate between the UK and Australia. On the 20th December of that year, P&O informed Harland & Wolff - the Belfast-based firm who had built the Titanic, Britannic and Olympic for White Star - that they had won the tender. It was announced that the new build was to be of 45,000 gross tonnes, with a beam of 103ft and a length of 814ft. She would be P&O's largest ever ship. A little over a month later, the deputy chairman of P&O, Mr Donald Anderson, officially announced the decision to the public. The new ship was to be of a radical new design, and for eight months, Harland & Wolff designers alongside those from P&O, made preparations for yard number "1621". "1621" was to have a host of cutting edge features in both her looks and her inventory. Her propulsion machinery was to be placed aft, leaving the best part of the ship for passenger accommodation. Her funnels, therefore, would also be placed aft - but side-by-side instead of fore-and-aft. This design had been pioneered in the Shaw Saville Liner Southern Cross (also built by Harland & Wolff), but was nevertheless unusual. The machinery itself was to be turbo-electric powered by steam turbines, which would generate some 85,000shp. Other unusual features included the positions of the lifeboats. They would sit in retractable davits that would retract into recesses in the superstructure as opposed to being placed topside on a boat-deck. This would give her sleeker lines and leave more deck space for passengers. Also, a great deal of welded aluminium was used in the building of her superstructure. Around 1000 tonnes were used, enabling a saving of about 1500 tonnes of total weight. The use of aluminium to this extent enabled the ship's designers to accommodate an extra 200 cabins. On 23rd September 1957, on Slipway 14, Queens Island, Belfast, the first keel plates of Yard Number "1621" were laid, but it would be another six months before the name of the new ship would be announced. In March the following year, Sir Donald Anderson announced she would be called "Canberra" - an aboriginal word generally accepted to mean, "meeting place by the water" and of course the name of Australia's capital city. The name Canberra had already been used for a small coaster owned by Australasian United Steam Navigation Ltd, who made it available to P&O. An Australian naval vessel built in 1927 had also shared the name, along with an American heavy cruiser named after the Australian warship. Canberra would be the largest ship to be built in Britain since the Great Queens, and the biggest to be built at Belfast since the White Star's Britannic, back in 1914. The building raised a great deal of interest across the country and Europe and a large model of the ship was displayed at the Brussels International Fair in 1958, and other models were displayed at Olympia in London, and at the Queensland Centenary Celebrations in Australia. The new ship was launched on March 16th 1960. It was a cold, wet day in Belfast. So bad in fact, that a flypast by a Canberra bomber had to be cancelled. Three hundred guests gathered to watch the launch, with another estimated 11,000 onlookers cramming in and around the shipyard to watch. The ship's sponsor was Dame Pattie Menzies - wife of the Australian Prime Minister. Just before the launch, Dame Pattie attached a sprig of white heather to the lunching ribbon. With a pull of the handle, the bottle of Australian wine she had brought with her against the ships enormous bulbous bow and the huge white hull began to slide down the slip into the Musgrave Channel. She was then towed to Thompson Wharf for fitting out - a task that would continue until April of 1961. Canberra underwent her builders trials on the 29th April in Belfast Lough, during which time, when at full power, the huge bulbous bow lifted almost clear of the water - due to the immense weight of the machinery which had been placed aft. She made here way immediately to Southampton where some of her forward compartments were filled with hundreds of tons ballast to act as a counterweight. After two weeks in Southampton during which time fitting out continued, she left for her acceptance trials on the Clyde. Over the measured mile off the Isle of Arran, Canberra achieved a top speed of 29.27 knots. After the official handing-over ceremony to P&O, Canberra sailed down the west coast of England close to shore, showing herself off. Onlookers at Lands End watched her steam past, and then at Torbay, she was surrounded by a flotilla of small boats. Our room door I loved the carvings on the room doors at the Royal Viking Hotel. And their conference rooms were named: Tor, Oden, Loke (wouldn't want to plan anything in there!), and they even had one room named "Ask" (but no Embla that I could find). Pepsi Center Pepsi Center was constructed as part of a massive 6-year sporting venue upgrade in Denver along with Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies, and Invesco Field, home of the Denver Broncos. The complex was constructed in order to be readily accessible. The arena sits on Speer Boulevard, a main thoroughfare in downtown Denver, and is served by a nearby exit off of Interstate 25. There is also a light rail station on the western side of the complex. Pepsi Center Pepsi Center (aka The Can) is an arena located in Denver, Colorado, USA. The building is home to the Colorado Avalanche, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Mammoth and Colorado Crush. When not in use by one of Denver's sports teams, the building frequently serves as a concert venue. Pepsi Center is scheduled to be the main venue of the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Family affair in Nashville Nashville's Union Station is a former railroad terminal opened in 1900 to serve the passenger operations of the eight railroads then providing passenger service to Nashville, Tennessee. Built just to the west of the downtown area, it was adjacent to a railroad cut through which most of the tracks of the area were routed which was spanned by a viaduct adjacent to the station. The station was also served by streetcars prior to their discontinuance in Nashville in 1941. [edit] History and architecture The station is an example of late-Victorian Romanesque Revival architecture and is highly castellated. The tower originally contained an early mechanical digital clock; when replacement French silk drive belts proved unavailable during World War I, it was replaced by a traditional analog clock. The tower was originally topped by a bronze statue of the Roman god Mercury; this was toppled in a storm in 1951. When a new Main Post Office was built in Nashville in 1935, it was located adjacent to Union Station. A connecting passageway between the two served to transport mail to and from trains for over three decades. The station reached peak usage during World War II when it was the shipping-out point for tens of thousand of U.S. troops and the site of a USO canteen. It started a long decline shortly thereafter as passenger rail service in the U.S. generally went into decline. By the 1960s it was served by only a few trains daily. Much of its open spaces were roped off and its architectural features became largely the habitation of pigeons. The formation of Amtrak in 1971 reduced service to the northbound and southbound Floridian train each day. When this service was discontinued in October 1979, the station was abandoned entirely. The station fell into the custody of the United States Government's General Services Administration, which struggled for years to find a viable redevelopment plan as the station declined further. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and had a tremendous sentimental appeal to many Nashvillians who categorically rejected any redevelopment plans which did not involve the retention of the main terminal building. In the early 1980s a group of investors came forward with a plan to finance the renovation of the station into a luxury hotel which was approved. The hotel plan was based around the use of "junk bond" financing; the interest payments required were so severe that the hotel would require 90% occupancy at an average room rate of $135/night to break even. This was not supportable in the 1980s Nashville hotel market and the initial investors soon found the project to be bankrupt. Many feared that this meant that the station was doomed; however, the new investor group who bought the hotel out of bankruptcy were able to operate it profitably because they had a much lower cost basis in it and were not forced to charge such exorbitant room rates or project such a high occupancy rate. By the mid-1990s they had restored Mercury to his place atop the tower, albeit in a two-dimensional form painted in trompe l'oeil style to replicate the original. This was destroyed in the 1998 downtown Nashville tornado but was soon replaced. "The James Robertson" - Nashville The James Robertson on 7th Ave. is Nashville's second oldest remaining hotel. (The Hermitage is 1st.) Built in 1929, the hotel was named after the founder of Nashville. The architect that designed this building also designed the TN State Supreme Court building (next to the Capitol) and the Frist Center (old post office). Almost not surviving the great depression, it had gone back-and-forth from a hotel to apartments since 1978, when it permanantly became low income dowtown housing. The Renainnace hotel dwarfs it in the background. Forest of Bowlandreceives European Tourism Award The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has been awarded the European Charter for sustainable tourism in protected areas, for the second time. It remains the only protected area in England to achieve the honour to date. The award was presented by Carol Ritchie, Director of the EUROPARC Federation and received on behalf of the Forest of Bowland AONB by County Councillor Albert Atkinson, deputy leader of the county council, who is chair of the AONB's joint advisory committee. The Charter is awarded to protected areas which improve the sustainable development and management of tourism, and which ensure that this takes account of the needs of the environment, local residents, businesses and visitors. The Forest of Bowland AONB Unit has been working closely with tourism businesses in the area for over five years, and the area is becoming well known as a sustainable destination for high quality but low impact holidays, and offering excellent opportunities for walking, cycling and bird watching. Carol Ritchie said: "The Forest of Bowland AONB is leading the way in working with tourism businesses, and we are impressed with their partnership approach and the good practice they promote. We hope that the AONB will continue to go from strength to strength and be a shining beacon to other Charter areas in the UK." County Councillor Albert Atkinson said: "This award demonstrates that the Forest of Bowland AONB is implementing a strategic approach to working with local communities and tourism businesses to deliver tourism that complements and helps to promote our beautiful landscape, its wildlife and heritage, as well as supporting local employment and local produce." The Charter was awarded at the Tithe Barn at Browsholme Hall near Clitheroe, and as part of the day's proceedings local tourism entrepreneurs were also recognised for their contribution to making their own businesses more sustainable. Avro Lancaster crash, Brampton, Cumbria On the night of 9th January 1943 a Royal Air Force Lancaster flying over Germany was diverted to Crosby on Eden airfield (now Carlisle Airport), because of bad weather over its own base at Skellingthorpe in Lincolnshire. Whilst trying to land at Crosby, the pilot experienced problems and had to overshoot and try again. During the overshoot procedure the airspeed dropped below a safe working level and the aircraft gradually lost height until it hit the ground in a field about half a mile South West of what is now The Kirby Moor Hotel in Brampton. The undercarriage was destroyed on impact and the aircraft slid for half a mile showering wreckage across the field and over Church Lane, finally coming to rest and exploding as it hit a brick built barn to the rear of Kirby Moor. The barn burst into flames destroying two cars and killing or severely injuring thirty greyhounds, a bulldog, and a Yorkshire terrier that were kennelled inside. Two cars along with numerous wedding gifts that were stored in the barn were completely destroyed too. Apart from two survivors that were thrown from the wreckage the entire crew of the Lancaster were killed. The result of the crash was a huge explosion and a wall of flame that shot up the rear of The Kirby Moor. Thousands of rounds of 303 machine gun bullets and other ammunition sprayed the surrounding area as the fire gutted what was left of the fuselage. Fortunately on the evening of the 9th of January a fierce easterly gale was blowing which directed the flames away from the house. Mr and Mrs. Sutcliffe, the residents, were just finishing their supper in the rear kitchen when they heard the strange roaring sound of the stricken aircraft followed by an enormous explosion. This was followed by the sound of exploding ammunition and breaking glass as one of the huge main undercarriage wheels of the Lancaster crashed through the staircase window and into the hallway of the house. After taking cover underneath the dining room table for a few minutes untill the sound had lessened slightly, Mr and Mrs Sutcliffe emerged from the house to see what was happening. The sight that met their eyes was horrific. A sheet of flame as high as the trees, everything surrounding them was destroyed and ablaze. Ammunition was still exploding everywhere around them. Naturally, they were both severely shocked. Meanwhile the flames had been clearly seen in Brampton, about half a mile away, the alarm raised and fire brigades at both Brampton and Carlisle alerted. Within minutes the local Brampton Fire brigade got down to the task of putting the fire out. A Classic Original The Contemporary Resort is one of the two first resorts on property when the Walt Disney World Resort opened in 1971. The most prominent of the resort's four stand-alone buildings is the Contemporary Tower, built as an A-frame with outer walls which slope inwards around an inner atrium. This design was a collaboration by Disney, the United States Steel Corporation, and Los Angeles architect Welton Becket. To construct the building, steel frames were erected on site and modular pre-constructed rooms, designed by California architect Donald Wexler, were lifted into place by crane. Most of Disney's Polynesian Resort was built this way also. The Contemporary Tower houses most of the resort's key facilities, including resort registration and the guest service concierge. The main hall, named the Grand Canyon Concourse, is also located in the main Tower, and houses restaurants and a variety of shops. Approximately 500 guest rooms line the outer walls of the Contemporary Tower. The Walt Disney World Monorail System runs through the inside of this building, providing a monorail station here for resort guests. Adorning the concourse walls is a multi-story mosaic designed by Mary Blair. One three-story wing flanks the south side of the Tower and offers an additional 250 rooms. A convention center was added to the resort and opened on November 11, 1991, with more! than 90,000 square feet (8,400 m2) of convention space.
