University of Melbourne Former Teachers' College, Carlton, Victoria Australia
The Melbourne Teachers College has had multiple identities. As the Normal Institution it operated at the Model School in Spring Street from 1855-59, reopening in the same premises as the Training Institution in 1870, with F.J. Gladman brought from England to instil the latest educational philosophy. In 1889 the Institution moved to a grand, highly decorated, teaching and residential building adjacent to the University of Melbourne where it reopened as the Training College after being closed because of the depression from 1893-1900. The new principal was Frank Tate, one of Victoria's foremost educationists, who left to become Director of Education in 1902. Under Tate and his successor, John Smyth (principal 1902-27) the College was a leading force in Victorian teacher training.
Renamed the Teachers College in 1913 it quickly expanded beyond primary training to secondary, kindergarten and other specialised areas. From 1903 secondary training was conducted in conjunction with the University, a connection that was extended and formalised in 1919 with the principal being simultaneously appointed to the Chair of Education. During the 1920s trainee numbers rose far beyond the accommodation capacity, peaking at over 1000 in 1928. New colleges established at Ballarat and Bendigo in 1926 eased the pressure on the now Melbourne Teachers College until another round of depression cutbacks slashed trainee numbers. After considerable controversy the formal link with the University was broken in 1939.
Postwar expansion saw enrolments peak at 1153 in 1971 before the establishment of several new colleges relieved pressure. To rationalise resources the College amalgamated in 1973 with the adjacent Secondary Teachers College to form the Melbourne College of Education, which in turn became the State College of Victoria at Melbourne, and, in 1983, the Melbourne College of Advanced Education, before being amalgamated in 1989 with the Education Faculty of the University of Melbourne to form the Institute of Education. Victoria Barracks
Located on St Kilda Road in Melbourne, Australia, Victoria Barracks Melbourne is of architectural and historical significance as one of the most impressive 19th century government buildings in Victoria, Australia.
Originally built as accommodation for British Imperial Garrison troops, including the 12th and 40th Regiment of Foot who were involved in putting down the armed Eureka Stockade rebellion in Ballarat Victoria, and later the Colony of Victoria's colonial forces. The Barracks housed the Department of Defence from the creation of the Commonwealth of Australia (Federation) in 1901 until 1958 when the Department of Defence moved to the new Russell Offices in Canberra. The earliest building (G Block) at Victoria Barracks were built by soldiers on the 40th Regiment, under the supervision of a Royal Engineer officer, from 1856 to 1858, while the remaining buildings were built by civil contractors with the original bluestone buildings being constructed between 1856 and 1872. A large extension (A Block New Wing) was added to accommodate HQ Department of Defence in 1917 and while it looked like the original A Block building the construction method and interior was completely modern for the time. Another modern, for the time, art deco building (M Block) was added in 1939 and the floor was the first continuous concrete pour in Australia. The Barracks were named in honour of Queen Victoria

Banff National Park, Banff, AB
Banff National Park is Canada's oldest national park, established in 1885 in the Rocky Mountains. The park, located 110–180 kilometres (70–110 mi) west of Calgary in the province of Alberta, encompasses 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 sq mi) of mountainous terrain, with numerous glaciers and ice fields, dense coniferous forest, and alpine landscapes. The Icefields Parkway extends from Lake Louise, connecting to Jasper National Park in the north. Provincial forests and Yoho National Park are neighbours to the west, while Kootenay National Park is located to the south and Kananaskis Country to the southeast. The main commercial centre of the park is the town of Banff, in the Bow River valley.
The Canadian Pacific Railway was instrumental in Banff's early years, building the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise, and attracting tourists through extensive advertising. In the early 20th century, roads were built in Banff, at times by war internees, and through Great Depression-era public works projects. Since the 1960s, park accommodations have been open all year, with annual tourism visits to Banff increasing to over 5 million in the 1990s. Millions more pass through the park on the Trans-Canada Highway. As Banff is one of the world's most visited national parks, the health of its ecosystem has been threatened. In the mid-1990s, Parks Canada responded by initiating a two-year study, which resulted in management recommendations, and new policies that aim to preserve ecological integrity.

Welcome to Lake Louise of Banff National Park!
Lake Louise -- Canada's "Diamond in the Wilderness," and the "Hiking Capital of Canada". This area offers a tremendous diversity of recreational and sightseeing opportunities. Lake Louise is home to one of North America's finest downhill ski areas, and has numerous hiking and walking trails. The region abounds with spectacular scenery, from glaciers to waterfalls.
A quick word to big city dwellers - this is one of the 'last outposts of man in the area' - the next nearest 'destination' - 3 hours away - is jasper, the next town out before you're enroute to Alaska - DO NOT expect to find a booming 'Aspen' or 'Vail' nightlife experience here...
You will however find the best powder skiing on the Continent, unparalleled wildlife viewing opportunities, our famous Canadian Rockies scenery; and perhaps you'll find yourself again.
The Village of Lake Louise is on the Trans-Canada Highway fifty-seven kilometers (thirty-five miles) west of banff. This quiet and small village offers a range of travel amenities, fabulous dining opportunities and accommodations.

Ressaca na praia de Copacabana Undertow Rio de Janeiro ondas grandes maio 2011 big waves strong surf that hit the beach in Rio Copacabana this Sunday Brazil Brasil
Todo o vento intenso e chuva torrenciais ficam pelo Sul do Brasil. Aqui, chegam apenas as ondulacoes perfeitas.
- So os satelites enxergam essas nuvens. Elas giram porque o vento esta rodando. No meio do oceano, o vento chega a 100 km/h - conta Melo.
Nascem nesses ciclones extratropicais gigantes - observa Eloi Melo.

Natural Bridges State Park in Santa Cruz is a great place to watch the sunset. This is one of the few remaining arches, as the other ones have been washed into the sea. New ones will replace them as the years go by. The tip of the Monterey Peninsula and the start of the Big Sur coast 40 miles away are shown in the middle of the arch.
In order to show this arch in the best light, I had to wait until November for the setting sun to be at the best angle to show the detail on the arch face. I also wanted some cloud cover, which becomes more common as the 7 month summer dry season comes to a close at this time of year. I used a long exposure to smooth the water, highlighting the arch and distant coastline. And I timed it for when the sand was at its most reflective state at low tide with the slow movement of the water painting lines in the sand.
There was an awesome sunset to the right of the frame, but I resisted the urge to point at the sun because the light was better on the seascape in this direction.

260/365: Happy Fence Friday {Big Sur Coast} Edition
Project 365
Friday • September 17, 2010
This sweeping coastal view down the fence line is for my best bud Pammy from Morro Bay, California! When I visited her last November, we cruised up the coast to Big Sur and camped for a few nights. Along the way, we found this drive up into the mountains. It was shaping up to be a beautiful sunset. This is the makai view (Hawaiian for on the seaside, towards the sea, in the direction of the sea. Always loved that word)! We sat on the hillside with some tasty beverages until the sun dipped into the sea. You can see the tiny ribbon of the Pacific Coast Highway down there! My favorite place in the world ... today!
*I had my tripod set up and experimented with some HDR. I loved how this one caught some sun flare.
Happy Fence Friday Everyone! Have to run to work ... "I'm late / I'm late / For a very important date!" I'll catch up to everyone's gorgeous fences this evening! :D

Existeixen al voltant de 14.000 productors de vi, 117.514 hectarees de vinyers, 400 comerciants i un volum de negoci de 14.500 milions d'euros----- BORDEAUX (in Gascon: Bordeu) is a port city in the south-west of France, with 925,253 inhabitants in the metropolitan area at the 1999 census. It is the capital of the Aquitaine region, as well as the prefecture of the Gironde department. Its inhabitants are called Bordelais. Bordeaux is known to be Europe's main military space and aeronautics research and construction complex. Bordeaux wine draws its name from the city around which it has been produced since the 8th century. The city is considered the world's wine capital,[citation needed] hosting Vinexpo, the wine industry's biggest event worldwide.[citation needed] With almost 100,000 students, the city's university is renowned for its research units in crop science, new materials and nanotechnology. Between 30,000 and 90,000 years ago the area of Bordeaux was inhabited by the Homo neanderthalensis, whose remains have been found at a famous cave known as Pair-non-Pair, near Bourg sur Gironde, just north of Bordeaux. In historical times, around 300 BC it was the settlement of a Celtic tribe, the Bituriges Vivisci, who named the town Burdigala, probably of Aquitainian origin. The name Bourde is still the name of a river south of the city. The city fell under Roman rule around 60 BC, its importance lying in the commerce of Tin and Lead towards Rome. Later it became capital of Roman Aquitaine, flourishing especially during the Severan dynasty (3rd century). In 276 it was sacked by the Vandals. Further ravage was brought by the same Vandals in 409, the Visigoths in 414 and the Franks in 498, beginning a period of obscurity for the city.In the late sixth century, the city reemerged as the seat of a county and an archdiocese within the Merovingian kingdom of the Franks. The city fell into obscurity as royal power waned in southern Gaul in the late seventh century. The city was plundered by the troops of Abd er Rahman in 732, after he had defeated Duke Eudes and before he was killed during the Battle of Tours on October 10. Under the Carolingians were appointed a series of Counts of Bordeaux who served to defend the mouth of the Garonne from the Vikings. Eventually, the city was inherited by the Dukes of Gascony in the late tenth century. From the 12th to the 15th century, Bordeaux regained importance as part of the English realm, following the marriage of Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine with the French-speaking Count Henri Plantagenet, born in Le Mans, who became, within months of their wedding, King Henry II of England. The city flourished, primarily due to wine trade, and the cathedral of St. Andre was built. It was also the capital of an independent state under Edward, the Black Prince (1362-1372), but in the end, after the Battle of Castillon (1453) it returned to France. The Chateaux Trompette (Trumpet Castle) and the Fort du Ha, built by Charles VII of France, were the symbols of the new domination, which however deprived the city of its richness by halting the wine commerce with England. In 1462 Bordeaux obtained a parliament, but regained importance only in the 16
Former Devonshire Royal Hospital Buxton Derbyshire
Formerly the Devonshire Royal Hospital, commonly known as the Devonshire Dome, is a Grade II* listed 18th-century former stable block. It was added to in 1881 by architect Robert Rippon Duke, with what was then the world's largest unsupported dome with a diameter of 44.2 metres (145 ft); beating the Pantheon 43 metres (141 ft) and St Peter's Basilica 42 metres (138 ft) in Rome.
It is still the largest dome in the UK.
Built between 1780–1789, it was designed by John Carr of York for William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire. An octagonal building, it housed up to 110 horses and the servants of the guests of the Crescent Hotel and was built as part of the plan to promote Buxton as a spa town.
In 1859, the Buxton Bath Charity had persuaded the Duke of Devonshire to allow part of the building to be converted to a charity hospital for the use of the ‘sick poor’ and two thirds of the building was converted into a hospital.
In 1881, the Buxton Bath Charity trustees , persuaded William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire to give them the use of the whole building. Local architect Robert Rippon Duke was commissioned to design a 300-bed hospital for charity medical provision. The building became known as the Devonshire Royal Hospital in 1934.
In 2001, the University of Derby acquired the Devonshire Royal Hospital. The University received ?4.7m Heritage Lottery Fund backing for the restoration and redevelopment project.
Refurbished and reopened in 2003. It is used as a wedding venue, and exhibition space. It houses cafes, shops, restaurants and study spaces. The original spa of the hydropathic hospital has been reopened as a commercial spa centre.

A good night's sleep
We started late in the day (so late that it was more like night already) on our roadtrip to North Carolina, so we were still just inside the Indiana state line (almost to Kentucky) at about two o'clock in the morning. We finally decided that stopping was a necessity after we were almost slammed into by a pick-up truck on a lonely, unlit side road just off the highway. My mom was driving and was about to do a U-turn when this truck came out of nowhere on our left, blasting along a full speed, and literally missed us by inches.
In fact, the truck literally flew into the ditch that served as a median and I am still completely and entirely amazed to this day that it didn't land nose-first there. Instead, it just bounced once or twice as it flew down in and then back up and out again to finally stop way down the road on the shoulder on the other side of the road.
The driver, a guy who was probably in his 40's and was dressed in a rough old flannel work shirt and jeans, immediately got out of his truck while we stayed in our car. (Did I mention that it was an unlit side road, it was just my mom, Anna and I and there was NO ONE else around?) The conversation that he had with my mom when he came over went something like this:
Mom: Are you okay?
Guy: I'm fine, but I gotta check my truck. Do you have a flashlight?
Mom: No, I don't. I'm sorry.
Guy: Well, pull on up here and put your light on it, okay?
Mom: Okay, sure. *drives to other side of the road and pulls up behind the guy's truck*
Guy: *after looking under truck* Well, why don't you go ahead and give me your name and phone number so that I can call you if there's any damage.
Mom: Whoooooa, I didn't do anything.
Guy: Yeah, you were turning from the right-hand lane [not true!] and you didn't have a turn signal on [also not true!]. So, why don't you just give me your name and phone number and I can call you if there's any problems with my truck.
Mom: I don't think so. We can just wait here and call the police.
Guy: No, I can't wait. I have to get to the meth clinic. [Yeah, that's really what he said. Uh...]
After that lovely statement, the guy just walked away, jumped into his truck, drove back down through the ditch and across to get to the right side of the road and was completely gone in seconds. Leaving my mom, Anna and I with hearts still beating fast and a strong desire to just find a hotel where we could get some sleep.
Which, finally, leads us to this picture. My mom explained our story to the woman at the hotel reception desk when we finally found a nice place just after three in the morning and we ended up with a two-room suite for less than the regular room rate because we were checking in so late and, I'm sure, because the woman was just. that. nice. :-)

Day 69 2011
By any indication, tonight should be a good night for aurora watching, but unfortunately we were far too overcast to see anything. I snapped this instead, which shows some of the city's lights glowing off the low cloud ceiling.

SAS royal hotel 4 - egg chairs
I've never actually encountered one of these in person before (though we do have a Swan chair at the school) - let me tell you, it is a treat, every bit as enveloping and friendly as the form is trying to advertise. Reminds me tremendously of Charles Eames's ambition for the Lounge & Ottoman, that one shoud feel as if being held in a baseball catcher's mitt.
(The Eames chairs maybe have this a LITTLE bit beat for luxury, but I'd have to compare them side by side. Which would not be a chore!)
The chair was actually designed for this lobby...in red, though, not this black leather special edition. Anyway it's cool to encounter it on its home turf.

Freedom is the most basic of all human rights, and yet throughout history many individuals and nations have had to struggle to be free. Much progress has been made in helping to win freedom for all. But even though all nations agreed to uphold the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for their citizens, many people are not allowed these basic liberties.

Dallas Downtown
After a week of living in a hotel in a somewhat strange area of the Dallas outskirts, I wanted to convince myself that not all of Dallas is like that and made a detour through downtown on the way to the airport.
Unfortunately it was just more of the same. The architecture is just as horrendous, designed to make anyone not inside a car or behind a mirror glass window front feel as awkward as possible.

I didn't book any rooms or dorm beds for my drive up to the North cos I dun even know where I am going. I was initially looking at rooms in pubs etc but they were all fully booked and I also dun quite dare to stay in these B&Bs cos of the haunted encounter my friend had when she was travelling in UK years ago.
Luckily, I remembered that there is a function in my sat nav that I could find hotels that are nearby and so found the Premier Travel Inn. This cost me ?56 a night but it was heavenly! I have not stayed in a hotel for so long and the fact that my previous place was a shit-hole.
The next day, I stayed at a hostel in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and I couldn't sleep the whole night even though I had the whole room to myself cos they ran out of dorm beds. The people staying there practically don't sleep at all cos the whole night, I could hear people talking and doors banging.
I had such a good sleep the first night at the Travel Inn that I decide to stay in another Premier Travel Inn in Carlisle.
The other option to the Premier Travel Inn was the travelodge, but it cost about the same price and as I heard from my manager, its pretty basic. And since its about the same price, I might as well stay in the Premier Travel Inn - as I guess the word "Premier" should be pretty good.
