Apollo Hotel Almere City Centre

My room in the Apollo Hotel Almere City Centre The Netherlands. It really seems James Bond like. I heard the 007 theme song playing in my head when I entered and you have to have a key to activate the elevator and the lights in the room. So thought I should share.

Sorry I haven’t been on in a couple of days I’m away on business and after arrival there was a really bad storm and was having trouble connecting to the Internet. Anyway the weather cleared up and I’ve finally had a few minutes to take some shots of the unique local architecture

The Netherlands (pronounced n???rl?ndz; Dutch: Nederland, is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, located in North-West Europe. It is a parliamentary democratic constitutional monarchy. The Netherlands borders the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south, and Germany to the east. The capital is Amsterdam and the seat of government is The Hague.

The Netherlands is often called Holland, a pars pro toto, as North and South Holland are actually two of its twelve provinces (see terminology of "the Netherlands"). The word Dutch is used to refer to the people, the language, and anything pertaining to the Netherlands. This lexical difference between the noun and the adjective is a peculiarity of the English language and does not exist in the Dutch language. The adjective 'Dutch' is derived from the language that was spoken in the area, called 'Diets', which equals Middle Dutch.

View from Fairmont Hamilton Princess, Bermuda--Sept., 1952

View from Fairmont Hamilton Princess, Bermuda--Sept., 1952

Dad flew from LaGuardia to Kindley Field on Colonial Airlines aircraft N-4268 on Sept. 28, 1952. Passenger manifest is available on line, amazingly.

Dad's 8th great-grandfather Stephen Hopkins was sailing to Virginia in 1609 on the Sea Venture but was shipwrecked on Bermuda. Claiming the laws of England did not apply he refused to obey the orders of the captain, and was nearly hanged for mutiny. He later returned to the New World on the Mayflower.

"The Fairmont Hamilton Princess ("The Princess" to most locals) opened its doors on January 1, 1885. Bermuda had gained international recognition two years earlier in 1883 when Princess Louise, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, visited for a winter retreat and called it a place of eternal spring. When the hotel opened, it was named The Princess in honor of the royal visit some years earlier.

Harley Trott, a leading businessman at the time and head of Trott & Cox, the steamship agents and purveyors of meat for the British military, was determined to build a hotel that would attract affluent Americans, who would summer in the Berkshires and winter in Bermuda.

From the moment it opened, The Princess was considered the gem of the island. With long shady verandas and a blue slate roof, the four-story building comprised 70 rooms, each equipped with gas lights, hot and cold running water and a five-inch mirror to allow guests to primp before stepping out for the night. Staff dressed in white jackets and waving pink handkerchiefs greeted luxury liners.

As word got out, celebrities started to appear. Mark Twain, a regular at the hotel, loved to smoke cigars on the veranda and wartime guest Ian Fleming is said to have used its fish tank-lined Gazebo Bar as a motif in his novel, Dr. No." Wikipedia

Biographie

The Great Pyramid of Giza, also called Khufu's Pyramid or the Pyramid of Khufu, and Pyramid of Cheops, is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now Cairo, Egypt, and is the only remaining member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for Fourth dynasty Egyptian King Khufu (Cheops in Greek) and constructed over a 20 year period concluding around 2560 BC. The Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. Originally the Great Pyramid was covered by casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface, and what is seen today is the underlying core structure. Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base. There have been varying scientific and alternative theories regarding the Great Pyramid's construction techniques. Most accepted construction theories are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place.

There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so-called[1] Queen's Chamber and King's Chamber are higher up within the pyramid structure. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the main part of a complex setting of buildings that included two mortuary temples in honor of Khufu (one close to the pyramid and one near the Nile), three smaller pyramids for Khufu's wives, an even smaller "satellite" pyramid, a raised causeway connecting the two temples, and small mastaba tombs surrounding the pyramid for nobles.

The main circular Auditorium seats 2,241 and is based on the Berlin Philharmonic Hall designed by Hans Scharoun. However the flexible design of the Auditorium allows the stalls seating to be moved to create a larger arena. The smaller adjoining Studio seats 380. The dome of the building is coated in copper. This is so the exterior will eventually turn green and reflect the dome of Belfast City Hall and other Victorian buildings in the city centre. The building also contains bars and a restaurant.

In 2002, the hall was voted the second best conference centre in the world in the Apex Awards. A 2006 socio-economic impact study commissioned by Belfast City Council found that the hall had generated ?10 for the city for every ?1 spent on operational costs.

Waterfront at Montreal. This is rather rundown and I thought interesting but there are also beautiful modern areas.
