#194: Drive and I Win the Jeremiah Johnson Mountain Men Award While the rest of the crew up here were taking one or two runs at Alpine, then hanging out in the bar, Drive and I set our sights higher. Way higher. We got snowshoes, went to Royal Gorge near the Donner Pass and snowshoed out along an 18.7 KM loop trail to the edge of the Royal Gorge. This is Drive on the edge of the Gorge, the source for the Northern Fork of the American River and 2000 feet up from the start of the trail. You better believe we took loads of documentary pictures to prove that we made out there. As we made our way back, Drive said, "We've done more exercise than anyone in the house." I corrected him that we'd done more exercise in one day than everyone in the house combined had done all weekend. Five and a half hours snowshoeing!!! We're having a piece of foie gras bigger than our heads served on fried bread -- since we've already burned those calories. Some hippie chick had written an essay all over the door about global warming, complaining how congress had done nothing, etc. Written over it, someone had scrawled "Fuck Congress. Ride a Bike". Seriously amazing. Could not have said it better myself. Life is like riding a bike..... If you look at the ground instead of looking up, you'll lose your balance and crash. It's been a while since Danbo's been out to play. He's realized that it's safer to stay in the camera bag than to be discovered by the precocious 2-yr old in the house : ) HTITFT! do you burn more calories walking or riding a bike Drawing together many histories-of anatomical evolution and city design, of treadmills and labyrinths, of walking clubs and sexual mores-Rebecca Solnit creates a fascinating portrait of the range of possibilities presented by walking. Arguing that the history of walking includes walking for pleasure as well as for political, aesthetic, and social meaning, Solnit focuses on the walkers whose everyday and extreme acts have shaped our culture, from philosophers to poets to mountaineers. She profiles some of the most significant walkers in history and fiction-from Wordsworth to Gary Snyder, from Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennet to Andre Breton's Nadja-finding a profound relationship between walking and thinking and walking and culture. Solnit argues for the necessity of preserving the time and space in which to walk in our ever more car-dependent and accelerated world. The ability to walk on two legs over long distances distinguishes Homo sapiens from other primates, and indeed from every other species on earth. That ability has also yielded some of the best creative work of our species: the lyrical ballads of the English romantic poets, composed on long walks over hill and dale; the speculations of the peripatetic philosophers; the meditations of footloose Chinese and Japanese poets; the exhortations of Henry David Thoreau and Walt Whitman. Rebecca Solnit, a thoughtful writer and spirited walker, takes her readers on a leisurely journey through the prehistory, history, and natural history of bipedal motion. Walking, she observes, affords its practitioners an immediate reward--the ability to observe the world at a relaxed gait, one that allows us to take in sights, sounds, and smells that we might otherwise pass by. It provides a vehicle for much-needed solitude and private thought. For the health-minded, walking affords a low-impact and usually pleasant way of shedding a few pounds and stretching a few muscles. It is an essential part of the human adventure--and one that has, until now, been too little documented. Written in a time when landscapes and cities alike are designed to accommodate automobiles and not pedestrians, Solnit's extraordinary book is an enticement to lace up shoes and set out on an aimless, meditative stroll of one's own. --Gregory McNamee Similar posts: weight loss cutting calories food intake calorie calculator new weight loss procedures low carb bbq ribs how to lose weight in your chest calories in chef salad no dressing school healthy eating best pilates dvd for weight loss |

String Cheese Incident The String Cheese Incident at 10,000 Lakes Music Festival 2007 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. how many calories are in string cheese Waiting for the Snow to Fall is an up-close journey back to the places and towns that helped create, define and shape the members and music of The String Cheese Incident. Pulling their old tour bus, "Bussy," out of retirement, the band embarks on a unique Winter Tour to visit old friends, homes, haunts, and early-day venues. Told in their own words, the documentary captures a time of personal reflection while the band members truly celebrate all that their Rocky Mountain base has to offer: skiing, rich musical traditions, and stunning natural beauty. With the help of ski film specialists Warren Miller Films, this movie captures a side of the band that fans have never seen. If expert musical jams and Colorado ski slopes are your idea of heaven on earth, the String Cheese Incident's Waiting for the Snow to Fall is a visit to Shangri-la. A worthy companion to the band's Evolution DVD, this easygoing documentary (coproduced by ski-movie king Warren Miller) follows SCI to their roots in the crisp mountain environs of Telluride, Colorado, and points nearby, as they prepare for a 2002 Winter Festival concert in Denver's Rocky Mountain Fillmore auditorium (released separately). Having paid their dues with several years of heavy touring and zero-budget amenities (including a rickety bus, revived here for some nostalgic bonding), the group members of this democratically leaderless band are relaxed, musically polished, and united in their love for skiing and music as modes of spiritual expression. The five bandmates reflect on their past, the symbiotic nature of their collaborations, and their cooperative philosophies about this juncture in their ongoing progression. "Extra Cheese" bonus features include two multiangle concert excerpts, additional interview clips, crew visits, and wipeouts on the slopes. A delicious vibe, no matter how you cut it. --Jeff Shannon Similar posts: drink green tea to lose weight sleep loss and weight gain low fat meal planner using laxatives to loose weight how to lose weight drinking water calories in a ruby red grapefruit extreme weight loss camp |

(12) QUICHE BENTO I've been so busy lately that I'm glad for the long weekend. I was supposed to go back into work, but I decided to procrastinate and use up everything in my icebox. So, I've been making quiches all day! Great way to use up the veggies and eggs! I tried my cool new egg thingy to make hard boiled eggs. It's cool...but messy! Oh....and I managed to fry up some tofu too! Ready for the Oven A dish based on my mother's macaroni-and-cheese recipe. No macaroni - when I went on the low-carb kick, I substituted tofu for pasta. The eggs, which Mom used, give it a semi-quiche texture. Mom never added the veggies, other than onions. I always add green and/or red pepper and anything else we have on hand, like mushrooms or squash. low carb quiche recipes A staple for any cook's kitchen, this 1 Quart Round Quiche is versatile enough to hold your favorite quiche, it also will hold desserts and appetizers. Not only can you bake in it, you can also use it for serving. And for cleaning, it goes right into your dishwasher. While this style of porcelain baker is usually called a quiche pan, you'll have equally good--if not better--results using it with custards or fruit or custard dishes. Its shallow, attractively rippled sides create a decorative affect for desserts such as clafouti or Bavarian cream, and the low sides make a perfect cooking-and-serving container for warm appetizers such as garlic flan--guests can dip their chips right into the bowl! You can use this for pastry-on-the-bottom pies and quiches, but you'll get crisper results from a standard metal pan. For top-crust desserts like crisps or crumbs, this is an excellent choice that goes easily from oven to dining table to dishwasher. --Jill Lightner Similar posts: foods to eat for healthy hair average daily calorie intake for men kroger low fat cottage cheese calories in bbq chicken leg best weight loss foods to eat calories in a large green apple low fat chicken and rice casserole 2200 calorie diet plan |

(5) 317/365 Creamy Tomato & Basil Soup 2 28oz. cans of crushed tomatoes 2 cups chicken broth 25 (or more) leaves of FRESH basil 6 medium cloves of garlic 1-3 Tbs of sugar ? cup extra virgin olive oil 1 pint heavy whipping cream ? to ? cup of grated (NOT shredded) romano cheese In a medium sized crock pot, add the crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, ? of the heavy cream, and sugar. Set temperature to low and stir well. Using a small skillet grate (or mince) the garlic and saute until light brown. Add garlic and olive oil to the soup. (Note: the olive oil won't work into the soup until the soup is throughly heated). Add the chopped basil* and romano and stir well. Simmer on low for 8-10 hours (the longer the better). Right before serving, add in the remaining heavy cream and any extra basil you would like. Puree in a blender and then serve. Side notes: * I used more like 40-45 basil leaves. * Sugar is optional. Use as much or as little as you like. I used a lot. Same goes for the romano cheese. * Could probably get away with fat free half & half to lower the fat/calorie content. * The romano gives the soup a slightly gritty texture, but it's good. * Trader Joe's always has a really good deal on fresh basil. * Next time I'm adding two cans of fire roasted dices tomatoes * If soup is to thick after pureeing, add a little chicken broth. If it's too thin, add tomato paste. For my pregnant friends: Eating really (and I mean REALLY) basil-y marinara sauce put me into labor. No joke, it seriously did. Put as much basil into the soup as you can stand! * If you post this recipe anywhere, please give me credit. low fat chicken corn chowder chicken corn chowder. needed more corn less other stuff. (see notes at end) oh well, only 4 WW pts per serving. recipe as we made it: (adapted from a turkey corn chowder i found online - but can't seem to find the link) this made 11 servings of soup for us. (wish we'd used more flour. this wasn't very thick at all.) Add potatoes and broth, stir to combine and bring to a full boil. Reduce heat to medium and cook until potatoes are tender (about 10 minutes). Add corn and chicken and cook until heated through, about 10 minutes. (wish there would have been more corn!) --- REVISIONS: when we ate this as leftovers, we added some canned corn (drained a little and blended) for thickness. if i was to make this again, i would most likely use only 1 cup each of the carrots, celery & bell pepper. Vegetarian cooking made easy and delectable by Veronica Vezza "FOREWORD It gives me great pleasure to write a brief foreword to Veronica's book of vegetarian recipes. During the last few years there has been quite a spate of vegetarian recipe books, and each of these has made an unique contribution calculated to help in destroying the false notion that meals without flesh, fish or fowl are necessarily monotonous and lacking in variety. The author is the daughter of Lillian and Also Vezza, whose vegetarian guest house, Sandy Point, at Frinton-on-Sea, Essex, has rightly come to be regarded s one of the best of its kind. Two factors, judging from appreciative comments one has heard repeatedly over the years, have commended Sandy Point to its many guests; these are the welcome friendly atmosphere of the place and the generous and attractive catering. Now the general public are being given the opportunity of enjoying the favourite recipes devised in the Sandy Point kitchen, and from personal experience I can assure them that they will not be disappointed. The simple presentation of the recipes should make this a very popular book with busy people. (10) Small Differences in Language One of the things that makes New Zealand like home is the familiar language. Still, there a lots of tiny differences in NZ English that serve to amuse more than confuse us yanks. Most are from British English and some may be regional or innacurate. Here are some of the terms we've noticed... A game room is a "games room" You don't watch sports, you watch "sport". Food or drink you take with you is "take away" French fries are "chips" In the car, you don't yield, you "give way" College is "varsity" not to be confused with "Uni" in Australia A freeway is a "motorway" A parking lot is a "car park" An overpass is an "overbridge" To fill something up is to "top up" Instead of buckle, you "do up" your seatbelt An Americano espresso is a "long black" and a latte without foam is a "flat white" A cell phone is a "mobile" An expiration date is an "expiry" date Low fat 2 percent milk is "trim" Speed bumps are "judder bars" Shopping carts are "trolleys" (in some cases) Appetizers are "entrees" on many menus. Dates are in the form of dd/mm/yyyy Cookies are "biscuits" A fee is a "tariff" Windsheilds on a car are "windscreens" Slot or gambling machines are "pokies" You don't rent, you "hire" Sunny weather is referred to as "fine" A cash register is a "till" When something is small it is "wee" Driving under the influence is "drink driving". A round trip ticket is a "return" ticket Bell Peppers are "capsicums" A cooler or ice chest is a "chilly bin" The letter Z is pronounced "Zed". If you ask me, some of these terms make a lot more sense than the US versions. An appetizer should be called "entree", right? Pepper-beef stir-fry 1 package Japanese curly noodles, uncooked 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce 1/4 cup low-salt bef broth 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar 2 teaspoons cornstarch Cooking spray 3/4 pound top round steak, thinly sliced 1 teaspoon light seasme oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into thin strips 1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained 3 ounces snow peas, trimmed Cook noodles according to package directions, omitting salt and fat. Combine soy sauce and next 3 ingredients in a small bowl; stir well with a whisk. Place a nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium-high heat until hot; add beef. Stir-fry 4 minutes or until browned. Remove beef from pan; set aside, and keep warm. Coat pan with oil. Add garlic and bell pepper; stir-fry 2 minutes. Add water chestnuts and snow peas; stir-fry 1 minute. Return beef, juices, and soy sauce mixture to pan, and cook 30 seconds or until slightly thickened. Server over noodles. Web Services Platform Architecture: SOAP, WSDL, WS-Policy, WS-Addressing, WS-BPEL, WS-Reliable Messaging, and More "Other books claim to present the complete Web services platform architecture, but this is the first one I've seen that really does. The authors have been intimately involved in the creation of the architecture. Who better to write this book?" --Anne Thomas Manes, Vice President and Research Director, Burton Group "This is a very important book, providing a lot of technical detail and background that very few (if any) other books will be able to provide. The list of authors includes some of the top experts in the various specifications covered, and they have done an excellent job explaining the background motivation for and pertinent details of each specification. The benefit of their perspectives and collective expertise alone make the book worth reading." --Eric Newcomer, CTO, IONA Technologies "Most Web services books barely cover the basics, but this book informs practitioners of the "real-world" Web services aspects that they need to know to build real applications. The authors are well-known technical leaders in the Web services community and they helped write the Web services specifications covered in this book.Anyone who wants to do serious Web services development should read this book. " --Steve Vinoski, Chief Engineer, Product Innovation, IONA Technologies "There aren't many books that are as ambitious as this one is. The most notable distinguishing factor of this book is that the authors have tried to pair down the specifications for the user and rather than focusing on competing specifications, they focus on complementary ones. Nearly every chapter provides a business justification and need for each feature discussed in the Web services stack. I would recommend this book to developers, integrators, and architects." --Daniel Edgar, Systems Architect, Portland General Electric "Rarely does a project arrive with such a list of qualified and talented authors. The subject matter is timely and significant to the industry." --Eric Newcomer, author of Understanding SOA with Web Services and Understanding Web Services and Chief Technology officer, IONA The Insider's Guide to Building Breakthrough Services with Today'sNew Web Services Platform Using today's new Web services platform, you can build services that are secure, reliable, efficient at handling transactions, and well suited to your evolving service-oriented architecture. What's more, you can do all that without compromising the simplicity or interoperability that made Web services so attractive. Now, for the first time, the experts who helped define and architect this platform show you exactly how to make the most of it. Unlike other books, Web Services Platform Architecture covers the entire platform. The authors illuminate every specification that's ready for practical use, covering messaging, metadata, security, discovery, quality of service, business-process modeling, and more. Drawing on realistic examples and case studies, they present a powerfully coherent view of how all these specifications fit together--and how to combine them to solve real-world problems.* Service orientation: Clarifying the business and technical value propositions * Web services messaging framework: Using SOAP and WS-Addressing to deliver Web services messages * WSDL: Documenting messages and supporting diverse message interactions * WS-Policy: Building services that specify their requirements and capabilities, and how to interface with them * UDDI: Aggregating metadata and making it easily available * WS-MetadataExchange: Bootstrapping efficient, customized communication between Web services * WS-Reliable Messaging: Ensuring message delivery across unreliable networks * Transactions: Defining reliable interactions with WS-Coordination, WS-AtomicTransaction, and WS-BusinessActivity * Security: Understanding the roles of WS-Security, WS-Trust, WS-SecureConversation, and WS-Federation * BPEL: Modeling and executing business processes as service compositions Web Services Platform Architecture gives you an insider's view of the platform that will change the way you deliver applications. The purpose of the data warehouse is simply to store the raw data, and in combination with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, this data can be transformed into accessible information that reflects the real factors affecting the enterprise. In this book, we introduce the key concepts of data warehousing, OLAP, and data mining. In addition to coverage of Data Transformation Services (DTS) and MDX, this book also demonstrates how to develop an Analysis Services client application, and how to secure and optimize your data warehouse. There is also an in-depth discussion of the exciting new topic of Web Housing. By reading this book, you will learn how best to employ data warehousing and OLAP in your business, and how to leverage it to provide your organization with improved revenue and profitability. Although I am still having acupuncture and still taking some medication, nevertheless I AM getting very much stronger again :-) 2. I was sad when my gruesome twosome first left home but I am starting to enjoy the freedom now! 3. This probably sounds silly, but I am proud that I've been able to get myself to the dentist despite the panicky feelings rearing up 4. I am struggling right now with weight-loss issues but I know that soon I WILL be strong enough to get on with turning my life around and one day I will be very much slimmer, fit and healthy :-) 5. I have way too many interests and not enough time for them LOL 6. I have come full-circle, spiritually, once again ~ back home to paganism 7. I am not bi-polar but I am very much aware that I have not got a well-balanced personality! 8. Even though I know they are not real, sad scenes in TV programmes and films still make me cry 9. When I was a toddler, I managed to fall onto an Underground railway line ~ thankfully, it was a disused one :-0 10. I also managed to lose my Mum in the C&A store on Romford High Street (I think that's where it was, at any rate LOL); Mum was terrified that I'd got out of the store as it was on a busy main road but someone found me and "handed me in" at one of the cash desks! Mum found me there, standing on the desk sobbing, despite the shop assistants having given me a sweetie to try to calm me down LOL 11. As a consequence of 9 and 10 above, I was kept on walking-reins 'til the age of four ROFL 12. I can still vividly remember being in hospital when I had my tonsils and adenoids removed at the age of four 13. For some reason, I freak out my daughter if I talk to and look at her whilst I am touch-typing at the same time :-D 14. I used to make celebration cakes for family and friends until I made three wedding cakes, one virtually after the other ~ I was a wreck after that LOL 15. I feel a bit sad sometimes when I look in the mirror 'cos my face has aged quite considerably over these past two years, since I've had so much back pain :-( 16. I absolutely adore having my head stroked or my hair washed/brushed ~ that was the best bit about going to the hairdressers LOL Indian head massage is fabulous! Moving at the Speed of Life ...
