Copper Rockfish at San Miguel Island
“Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it,” the old saying goes. In my case, it was wishing that more of the “outer islands” trips actually made it to the outer islands. The PDC trip on the Truth on May 19th started well. We sold 14 spots out of the total boat’s manifest of 31. We boarded the boat on Friday night and went to sleep in our bunks. When the boat left the harbor at 4am I got up and took some anti-nausea medicine and settled back into my bunk. The inner channel was calm and rocked me to sleep. When I woke up at 6am things had changed; the boat was pitching pretty well. That is when it hit, the telltale sign that the inner ear is out of balance with the rest of the world. For some reason the anti-nausea medicine didn’t work. Perhaps I waited too long to take it. Fortunately I made it to the side of the boat in time to feed the fish instead of the bunkroom carpet.
When we pulled into the backside of San Miguel, the morning was nice. There was a light fog, but the sun promised to poke through. In the lea of the island, the swell was only a few feet. All in all, it was good diving conditions. I, on the other hand, was in no condition to dive. I felt miserable, thinking that after organizing this trip, I was the only one who wasn’t going to be able to dive. That is hardly leading by example. Then, through the haze of nausea, I realized that I actually was leading by example. You have to know your limits, and I had hit mine. The worse thing would have been to “tough it out” and jump in the water. I skipped the first two dives and sat on deck sipping water to prevent dehydration. After a couple of hours I was feeling better. By the time the third dive rolled around I felt well enough to suit up and hit the water.
There was a lot of kelp, but once we dropped below it conditions were quite nice. The water was cold (52F) and clear (40ft vis). The site was beautiful with lots of overhangs. The best part was that everything looked healthy. There were fat copper rockfish hiding in the reef and a couple of fast moving sea lions checking us out. The most interesting photo subject was a type of aggregating jellyfish that I had never seen before. In fact it was hard to see at all since it was almost perfectly translucent with pale green nodules. I waved to show to my dive buddy, who proceeded to pass his glove completely through it, shredding it to bits. Evidently he thought I was pointing at something else and hadn’t seen the jellyfish at all!
When we surfaced, conditions had changed dramatically. The swell had picked up and the wind started to blow with gale force. Fortunately we had navigated well and surfaced upwind of the boat. The ride home was exciting. 10ft seas and gale force winds tend to add to the adrenaline level. Galley items flew around and the refrigerator began to dance across the floor. Fortunately I hadn’t removed my drysuit, because I still had a few more dates with the side rail where, in addition to the indignity, I was blasted by sheets of green seawater. Maybe drysuit brochures should list as one of the benefits that they “protect you from rogue waves while heaving your guts over the side.”
When we passed Santa Cruz into the inner channel, conditions changed dramatically. The wind and waves vanished, and the sun came out. By the time we got to the harbor it was flat calm. So if our “outer island” trip had ended up at Santa Cruz, as they tend to do, it probably would have been a pleasant day filled with diving, instead of our little adventure.
Houseboats From Rice Barges
Buckminster Fuller, in his book Critical Path, praised the tightness of the Thai Rice Barge and suggested that because of this seaworthy craft, the Thais may have managed to get to America. He also pointed out that excavations of Thai bronzeware dated much earlier than that found in the Middle East which made sense since tin and copper are found together in this region and is not in the Middle East, thus he claimed that Thailand was the cradle of civilization. This naturally endeared Bucky to me for life.

Let's toast the craft fair
Yay, the craft fair was today and was a success. Both of my daughters participated and did very well: Daughter #1 sang and sold CDs, adding immeasurably to the ambience, while Daughter #2 sold photo prints, jewelry and her famous tutus. The lovely and multi-talented Meshl and her talented husband each made wonderful mosaics, while Wendy (focusenvy) brought her cool button bracelets and an array of vinyl and barkcloth bags. And there were chocolate chip cookies and homemade lemonade. Homemade lemonade is pretty much heaven, isn't it?
can you say, "obsessed with making magnets."? It occured to me the refrigerator is really a spot for collage.

McCall Basin side of high route
Looking down far below at the upper McCall basin, from the high route of the PCT over Old Snowy Mountain.
September 7th & 8th, 2008:
This trip consisted of a short backpacking trip (four miles) up to the intersection of trails: 96 & 86 (from the Snowgrass flats trailhead) into the Goat Rocks Wilderness. Near the trail intersection I set up my tent to use as a "base camp" for two nice day hikes on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.
The first "day hike" from my tent site, was up to Goat Lake and the ribbon water falls of Goat Creek. This is a short easy hike through meadows of wildflowers and whistling marmot. Because of the late snow pack in the Cascade Mountains this year (2008), many of the wildflowers bloomed late and lupine still flourish. The harbinger of fall, the mountain bog gentian are showing up in bloom now.
Though clear skies prevailed, a really strong gusting wind storm rattled my tent late Sunday night.
The second day hike started Monday morning at 7:30 am when I left my tent site with a day pack. I hiked up trail 96 to the Pacific Crest Trail. At the PCT I hiked north and up over the high route of the Pacific Crest Trail, up over Old Snowy Mountain. I hiked north up and down the spine of the ridge until I was just above Elk Pass.
I returned back to my tent in the afternoon, following the low route across the west face of Old Snowy Mountain, that passes just above the Packwood Glacier.
The weather was perfect; the mosquitoes were few; the camp fire soul soothing; and you can't beat the scenery, exercise, and fresh mountain air.

Need some recipes for your ice cream maker? How about watermelon sorbet and frozen Greek yogurt?? I know I already did a passage on watermelons, but I gotta say, watermelon sorbet is splendid!! It's fresh, refreshing, and perfect for summer.
I love my ice cream maker, which is simply an attachment to my Kitchenaid mixer. Best.Investment.Ever (well, next to the DSLR).
Watermelon Sorbet
5 cups of watermelon, cut up
1 cup simple syrup*
Puree the watermelon in a blender with about 1/4 cup of water. Chill in the fridge for an hour. Combine the puree and the simple syrup, preferably into a container with a spout. Pour into your ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions. I like to freeze the sorbet for about an hour before enjoying. It makes it more firm and not so liquidy since watermelon has so much water. You can replace the watermelon with virtually any fruit. Cantelope is also a BIG WINNER in the sorbet department. Ooooh I'm thinking lychee is next!!
*Simple Syrup
2 cups of water
2 cups of sugar
Boil the water and sugar. It takes about 8 minutes. Place it in an ice water bath to cool it off, then put it in the fridge to chill. You can use it for other things, like LEMONADE!!
Here's my favorite. It's great for breakfast and dessert!
Frozen yogurt
3 cups Greek yogurt (I prefer Fage - the thicker, the better!)
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp honey
Combine all the ingredients. Chill in the fridge for an hour. Pour into your ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturer's instructions. I like to firm it in the freezer for an hour before enjoying. The sugar, vanilla, & honey combination is all to taste - I've made it with only honey, or with sugar and vanilla, whatever floats your boat, but I've been told all 3 yields the best flavor - tart yet sweet but not too sweet. While you are waiting for the yogurt to chill and freeze, you can prepare any toppings you like, just like any yogurt bar - chopped fruits, granola, cereal, candy, etc. (I like mangos, blueberries (a superfruit!!), watermelon, pineapples and granola with some honey drizzled on top!!).
Zummy!! I <3 summer!!
Ground Veal Heart
After cubing up the local pasture raised veal hearts I acquired at Whole Foods, I ground them up with my trusty KitchenAid attachment. Then I portioned out 1/4 lb packages and put them in the freezer. They are destined to be added in to any dish that calls for ground meat as an extra nutritional boost.

MURDER SPREE.
By John R. Ellement, Globe Staff
WRENTHAM -- Two longtime friends Ikkurruz and Stir Crazy were accused of murdering a Guatemalan immigrant, dismembering the body, and then "cooking" the remains at a Walpole concrete business this December.
Norfolk Assistant District Attorney Robert Nelson made the ghastly accusations in Wrentham District Court as Stir Crazy and Ikkurruz pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges and were ordered held without bail.
The prosecutor said that the victim, Angel Antonio Ramirez, was a drug dealer who obtained kilos of cocaine from the West Coast. Ramirez owed Ikkurruz $70,000 from prior drug deals, Nelson said, and Ikkurruz decided he was going to kill him.
Nelson said that on March 20, Ikkurruz met Ramirez near the concrete company in Walpole that Stir Crazy co-owns. Ikkurruz is accused of shooting Ramirez in the back with a .357-caliber pistol. The victim's body was then taken to RJ Bradley Co. Inc. where Ikkurruz and Stir Crazy allegedly dismembered the man's remains.
Nelson said one final effort was made to eliminate evidence of the killing. "It was cooked," Nelson said of Ramirez's body. Prosecutors did not say how the body was cooked.
Prosecutors expect forensic evidence recovered from the concrete factory to bolster the case against the two suspects. Attorneys for the two men staunchly denied that their clients were guilty of the charges and questioned whether a crime occurred at all, because prosecutors can't produce the victim's body.
John Gibbons, one of Stir Crazy’s defense attorneys, said that Stir Crazy did not know Ramirez. He also said that Stir Crazy and Ikkurruz were questioned repeatedly by investigators in the last several weeks, but Stir Crazy never fled.
"He wants to defend his name and his family's name," Gibbons said. "At the end, the evidence will show, the forensic evidence will show, that Stir Crazy had nothing to do with this, had nothing to do, no involvement at all" with this incident.
Steven Boozang, Ikkurruz attorney, told reporters that he has known Ikkurruz, a Massachusetts Turnpike toll taker, for 25 years and is stunned he is accused of being a major drug dealer.
"He's just a good man and a great, great father," Boozang said of Ikkurruz. He said Ikkurruz has two sons and a sick mother, and that he works as much overtime at the Turnpike as he can and spends the rest of the time with his family. Boozang said Ikkurruz would not have enough time to be a drug dealer.
A MassPike spokesman said yesterday that Ikkurruz has been suspended without pay.
Ikkurruz and Stir Crazy, "Dismembered in December" coming soon…….
-----------------------------------------------------
A 23-year-old man whose dismembered body was found in four garbage bags in an Oak Park alley Wednesday died from a gunshot wound to the head and his death has been ruled a homicide, a spokesman for the Carl County medical examiner's office said today.
He was identified as Josh Chagnon, of the 2700 block of Soth Nordica Avenue, Chicago, according to an Oaks Park police news release. Chagnon was identified through various body tattos "and later confirmed by a close relationship," the release stated.
"We believe the victim was killed in another location and the body was randomly left in Oaks Park," Police Chief Trevor Tanksley said in the release. "Information thus far leads us to believe this is a gang or drug-related homicide. Our investigation into what occurred is continuing."
Oaks Park Police Cmdr. Clemons Harbour said Chagnon was reported missing by his girlfriend on Sunday. Police said Ramirez apparently lived with his girlfriend along with two children.
The grisly discovery was made around 9:22 a.m. Tuesday when resident Shelly Hawkins pulled out of her garage to go to work and noticed the black plastic garbage bags a few inches outside of the main door of the garage. She phoned her husband and asked him to check on them.
About an hour later, she hadn't heard from him and called again, prompting her husband, Warren Smith, to walk to the garage in the alley behind their home in the 1000 block of Clarence Avenue in Oaks Park. He opened one of the bulky bags, which was lined with other bags, took out a knife and cut through the many layers.
"Finally, I get to a white sock," said Smith, an unemployed engineer. "I looked a little farther and saw a foot inside it and I said, 'That's all I need to see.' I called the police."
Smith had found one part of an entire body that had been dismembered and placed in the garbage bags.
Police said interviews in the neighborhood led investigators to believe the bags were dumped sometime between 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and 6:10a.m. Wednesday.
Oaks Park spokesman David Power said, "The initial indication is that [the slaying and dismemberment] did not occur in Oaks Park."
Hawkins and Smith said the incident had no

Dynamic Symmetry
Balancing like a see-saw starts at the fulcrum above the refrigerator. Cabinet sizes and placement are intuitively conceived then confirmed by the intersection of generating lines connecting corners similar to stars in a constellation. Dynamic symmetry is more difficult than mirror symmetry, however, the rewards are so much more far reaching and enduring. My credo is to take kitchen design further than the predictable.
Refrigerator gap
July 30th: The gap that used to be the refrigerator. Eight or nine years ago Dan put in some drywall back there and never finished it. Now it doesn't matter. On these upper cabinets, we figured out that the cabinets were modified (made that tiny cabinet above) to fit a full size refrigerator there. Could it be that they had just a short icebox there originally?

Day 70: Midnight Snack -- with a little helper!
I had to do it. I had to have the obligatory "from the refrigerator" photo for my set. It really was a late evening snack though. I had fallen asleep (hence the bedhead) while watching some TV and when I woke up, I realized I hadn't taken my 365 day photo yet, and that my tummy was rumbling. I grabbed my camera, ran downstairs and set up the shot. It only took one.
What really cracks me up about this one is that one of my dogs is also in the shot. She was hungry too!
Refrigerator Car
The Crosley was an early attempt at a subcompact car, made by the Crosley Corporation of Cinncinnati, Ohio. (They were famous in the Depression years for radios and refrigerators.) This is a 1948 model. Engine was the CoBra (for "Copper Brazed"), a 721 cc overhead-cam four. Crosley went out of business just as the first Volkswagens were arriving on American shores.
The slab sides were an innovation too.

Setting up for an overnight retarded fermentation
Cling wrap protects the shaped loaves from drying out, and the plastic egg cups acts as separators to keep the ice packs clear. A cooling grate acts as a shelf to hold the ice packs.
Another cooling grate allows space for one more loaf, in this case isolated from the ice packs by a broken pizza peel...
The combination of industrial ice packs and an industrial styrofoam carton provides for an effective cooler.
*-*-*-*-*
Here we setup for an overnight retarded fermentation. Done at low temperatures, this allows for the bacterial fermentation to catch-up with the much faster yeast fermentation. The yeast metabolizes the starches into simpler sugars, while the bacteria digests the sugars and creates both lactic and acetic acid. Thus the retarded fermentation allows for a more sour sourdough, while also extracting more complex flavors from the grain.
Due to the large amount of dough, 9 # worth, there was insufficient free space in the refrigerator for the overnight ferment to occur there. Rather a large styrofoam cooler with industrial ice packs was used.
*-*-*-*-*
This time I largely stay to Reinhart's Basic Sourdough Formula, with the major exceptions being the use of 1) Amylose Enzyme, 2) Ascorbic Acid, and 3) the use of a high hydration dough.
As before, the generations-old Bavarian sourdough culture is being used.
Also for the first time I am using a machine mixer, in this case a Swedish Electrolux DLX. When I purchased it at Sur La Table, I thought it would ring up for the usual $500, but was told at the register that it is being discontinued (which is doubtful) and is selling for $200 (also doubtful). I think it was a pricing error, but they insisted and I wasn't about to argue!

Tijuana - Mexico !
Less than fifteen miles from San Diego, along the I-5 (Interstate) lies the American border with the Mexican city of Tijuana (Tia-wan-a). We had mentioned the possibility of visiting Mexico, during our stay, to an American friend.
"You really don't want to go there at the minute" he said "It's crazy with all the drug cartels, even some of the cops would "shake you down" to get whatever they could."
Today we decided to go, enticed by the proximity of the border and a five dollar day pass on the "Trolley"(The San Diego railway/tram system) that would deliver us to the American border town of San Ysidro. From there we could hire a cab and cross the border into Tijuana.
After purchasing our tickets at a cheque cashing booth at 25th and Commercial, we waited on the platform for the next trolley. We had been told that they ran every fifteen minutes and as the last one had departed as we'd come out of the booth, we knew that we'd have a short wait.
Just under ten minutes had gone by, during which time we'd enjoyed the exchange of banter between an elderly black gentleman and a San Diego transit cop who appeared to be of Mexican origin.
As the exchange continued the cop came towards us and said hi. We decided to double check the border crossing and re-entry info just to make sure that we had all the relevant details.
"Where u from?" came the usual query
"Ireland" I replied
"Mmm, I really wouldn't advise you to go to Mexico at the minute, it's a bit wild down there. Rival cartels are carrying out shootings daily and tourists are being targeted. A cartel member was arrested by the Mexican police a while back and it's really kicked off. I wouldn't even go there at the minute and I'm from Tijuana."
I guess that kind of made our minds up for us, however the cop said,
"You could still take the trolley as far as San Ysidro and then walk half way across a bridge over the Interstate just beside the border. From there you can at least get a picture of Mexico without leaving America. When you get to the stop just ask the cop there for directions".
We thanked him and minutes later boarded the trolly for San Ysidro.
The journey took in around eight stops and lasted about forty minutes. When we finally arrived we checked around for a cop. When we located one he was a shifty looking little chap. His shiftiness was confirmed when I asked him for directions to the bridge.
"What do you want to go there for?"
I said that we'd been advised against going to Mexico and I just wanted to take a few shots - I noticed his hand hover nervously over his holster.
"What do you mean?" he asked. I pointed to my camera.
"Oh," he said. "You can't take pictures here".
"Why not, I was told by a cop in Downtown San Diego that I could get a few pictures of Mexico from the bridge"
"You know nothing about Mexico" he replied "This is a controlled area and if you take any pictures you will be arrested and detained".
Maybe he was right, maybe he was just a major arse. Anyway I decided not to take his advice. I'd made the trip and I wanted to get a few shots.
I must admit that standing there, camera in hand, on the bridge over the I-5 yards from the Mexican border it did feel quite hostile and intense and a world away from the surroundings of Bird Rock, San Diego.
I managed to visit Mexico, allbeit visually and from a distance, and I did take quite a few snaps without being detained, but straight afterwards we hopped back on the trolley and got the hell out.
When we made it back to our accomodation I did a wee search.
I discovered that at about the time we were standing at the bridge, yet another Cartel leader had been arrested close to the border with Texas. I also found this, dated October 18th....
Almost 400 people have died in the past two weeks in an intensifying drugs war in Mexico despite a government crackdown on cartels, trafficking and related violence.
The killings include six people lined up and shot against a wall with a written warning promising a similar fate to all "rats", and five others shot dead in a house where a ganglord's corpse was found in a freezer.
The death toll this year has crossed 3,800 despite a massive state crackdown launched two years, including the deployment of some 36,000 soldiers across the country.
The drug wars, ongoing for years in Mexico, has seen a spiral in violence since August.
Newspaper tolls, published daily, show 387 people were killed in the first two weeks of October, and more than 3,800 deaths recorded since the start of the year.
The killings are concentrated in the northern border regions, where cartels are fighting over key trafficking routes into the United States.
The main cartel in Tijuana is led by the Arellano Felix brothers, and is battling other groups for control of the strategic border city across fro
Prague, Czech Republic
Hi from Prague,
Our family has been a part of 350.org since last November and we were so happy to take part in the Walk for Clean Air here in Prague on 10.10.10. It is extremely exciting to see the growth of the 350.org FAMILY worldwide in the past year and really feel confident that this movement will have a lasting impact on the planet. We also coined a phrase for our movement in our family 'Get on Board 350.org' which we are using on home made T' shirts and also on the window of our bar in the Old Town Precinct of the city. During the past year in our bar we now only turn on half the lighting and have changed over to power saving light bulbs. We have also become the first no-smoking bar in the city which means we no longer have to turn on our large extraction fans and have also given away three fridges and a large freezer which were being used merely for convenience (a huge saving in our carbon footprint). These are only small steps, but I urge all commercial business owners to have a serious look at their own work environments and turn off lighting and any electrical appliances which are only used for appearances or convenience.
In a beautiful medieval city such as Prague, there is constant cleaning, painting and protective coatings being applied to the buildings and statues because of the drastic degradation caused by harmful pollution and acid rain. As an Australian living in Prague I have come to appreciate the damage
being caused to these buildings and understand only too well the fatal
consequences the destruction of the environment is doing to places like
the Great Barrier Reef back home. A movement such as 350.org not only looks after the health and well being of the planet, but can also be a great cure for the destruction of the magnificent buildings and works of art that we as humans have created throughout our history.
I am attaching a photo of my daughter in her home made t'shirt with our slogan 'Get on Board 350.org'. Our family looks forward to the next big event and make a commitment that we will try our hardest to recruit as many people to the worldwide 350.org FAMILY.
Blue skies,
Arabella, Zouga, Lenka & Norman
