  • (Grinding wheels) A sander is a power tool used to smooth wood and automotive or wood finishes by abrasion with sandpaper. Sanders have a means to attach the sandpaper and a mechanism to move it rapidly contained within a housing with means to hand-hold it or fix it to a workbench.

  • A wheel used for cutting, grinding, or finishing metal or other objects, and typically made of abrasive particles bonded together

  • A bonded abrasive product that is shaped into round wheels of varying size and width that are used on slow and high speed grinders. Grinding wheels are made from numerous abrasives including Aluminum Oxide, Silicon Carbide and Seeded Gel "SG" Ceramic abrasives.

  • a wheel composed of abrasive material; used for grinding

  • harsh: sharply disagreeable; rigorous; "the harsh facts of court delays"; "an abrasive character"

  • (of a substance or material) Capable of polishing or cleaning a hard surface by rubbing or grinding

  • a substance that abrades or wears down

  • Tending to rub or graze the skin

  • (of sounds or music) Rough to the ear; harsh

  • causing abrasion

Norton Metal Right Cut Right Angle Grinder Reinforced Abrasive Flat Cut-off Wheel, Type 01, Aluminum Oxide, 7/8" Arbor, 4-1/2" Diameter x 0.040" Thickness (Pack of 5)

Norton Metal Right Cut Right Angle Grinder Reinforced Abrasive Flat Cut-off Wheel, Type 01, Aluminum Oxide, 7/8

Norton Metal Type 1 Right Cut right angle grinder wheels are contaminant free, without iron, sulfur or chlorine, making them suitable for the nuclear industry. These wheels have versatile aluminum oxide for use on steels, iron alloys, and other ferrous (iron-containing) metals.
Reinforced cutoff wheels are designed to resist breakage caused by severe cross-bending and are required on any operation where the work is not securely clamped. Resin bonds are organic bonds that soften under the heat of grinding, releasing dulled abrasive grains. Because of its forgiving nature, only an organic type bond is used in cutoff wheels. The resin-bonded wheel is more resilient than a vitrified wheel. The manufacturing term for a resin bond wheel is "cured," meaning the wheel has been heated to less than 500 degrees F. Straight (also called flat) wheels are the most common grinding wheel shape. Straight wheels are used for grinding on the periphery, or outside boundary edge, of the wheel and produce a slightly concave surface, called hollow ground, on the workpiece. These wheels can be used for cutting off, tool grinding (between centers or centerless), and removing mold marks and sand from castings, among others. They are frequently used with grinding machines. Using a harder grade wheel increases wheel life but also increases burn and requires more power, and decreases cut rate. Burn is the effect on a workpiece from thermal stress as abrasive cuts or rubs material away. The damage ranges from discoloration to cracking of the workpiece.
Aluminum oxide is a widely used and versatile abrasive material. It is a tough, fracture- and wear-resistant grit that works well with a broad range of materials, from metals to wood. Aluminum oxide is more durable than silicon carbide and often used for material removal and finishing.
Abrasives are used for a variety of applications from shaping a part to fine finishing, depending on the grit size. Low grit numbers like 40 are coarse and are used for removing excess material and shaping a part. High grit numbers like 400 are fine and help to create a smooth surface finish.
Norton Abrasives manufactures a wide variety of sanding, grinding, and polishing abrasives, and has been located in the United States since 1885. In 1990, Saint-Gobain purchased Norton, keeping its manufacturing facilities and offices in the same location. Norton/Saint-Gobain has been recognized as a Global 100 Sustainable Company, as well as earning ISO 9000 and 14001 certification for quality and environmental management standards.

An angle grinder is a handheld power tool used for grinding and polishing.

Angle grinders can be powered by an electric motor, petrol engine or compressed air. The motor drives a geared head at a right-angle on which is mounted an abrasive disc that can be renewed when worn. Angle grinders typically have an adjustable guard and a side-handle for two-handed operation. There are myriad different disks that are used for various materials and tasks, such as cut-off disks (Diamond Blade), abrasive grinding disks, sanding disks, wire-brush wheels and polishing pads. The angle grinder has large bearings to counter side forces generated during cutting, unlike a power drill, where the force is axial.

Corundum Point

Corundum Point

Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing once set up a mining operation here after a deposit of the expensive mineral Corundum was thought to have been found. Corundum was used in the manufacture of abrasives for high quality grinding wheels. The mineral turned out to be the much softer Anorthosite and the site was abandoned along with 3M's early mining prospects. The company later turned to making sandpaper.

Norton Premium White Bench and Pedestal Abrasive Wheel, Type 1 Straight, Aluminum Oxide, 1

Norton premium white aluminum oxide bench and pedestal wheels provide maximum cut rate and cool cutting action on hardened or high-speed tool steels and other metals. Bench and pedestal wheels are used for offhand deburring and sharpening of parts and tools. Arbor bushings to 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8". Specification: Medium 60. All bench and pedestal wheels must be dressed to prevent loading. Loading can cause excessive heat, damage to the workpiece and wheel breakage. Dressing exposes new cutting edges and provides chip clearance. Do not grind wood, plastic or any other non-metallic material on a bench or pedestal grinder. Unsecured machines can move, causing grinding breakage and injury. Fixed-base bench and pedestal grinders must be secured.
