"Dharma" means one's righteous duty, just as "Karma" is an act, deed or manifestation of thought. Karma also explains the cause and effect relationship.

The symbol of dharma – the wheel – is the central motif in the national flag of India.

Various Indian religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, among others) have accorded a central focus to Dharma and advocate its practice. In Indian tradition, beings that live in accordance with Dharma proceed more quickly toward Dharma Yukam, Moksha or Nirvana (personal liberation).

These prayer wheels are a ubiquitous feature in monasteries all over Ladakh. Buddhists believe in renunciation as opposed to consumption, advocate and practise peace and not conflict, and are a truly unique people. It is this unique religion - so apparent in Ladakh - that misleads some into believing it to be Tibet.
