Master bedroom
Here's a shot of the master bedroom. It fits a king bed with two modestly-sized nightstands very nicely, with room for dressers as well on the opposite wall. Like the downstairs, the floor is a hardwood acacia flooring which is brand new. The whole place is also completely repainted. The windows are dual-pane Marvin aluminum-clad windows with Earthshade blinds.
Dining and living room
Here you can see the dining and living room, where you can see the new acacia hardwood floors, the new Marvin double-pane sliding glass doors, the Earthshade blinds, and new lighting. Also, you can see the porch, which is sizeable and has a nice area for planting.

Larger piece is the look I want
This is a sample (larger piece) of tavern grade antique heart pine from authenticpinefloors.com. It has a very natural look, but you can tell that something was applied. The company told me it was probably WOCA (formerly called Trip Trap). It's something like Waterlox but with "hardeners" in it. I'd be happier with this color than the smaller piece next to it, which is the pine of the floor with nothing on it. Seems to blend with the oak better--less stripey.

Commercial building - rear view
London's full of views like this - the buildings are a mixture of varied styles and all built at different times, they have solid, respectable facades, and behind them, in the middle of the 'blocks' it all looks a bit of a mess. This is the rear of some buildings which have restaurants on the ground floor (hence the ventilation ducts and the pile of cardboard boxes). Beyond them you can see the buildings on the other side of the street, including one with a rather whacky turret.

Cruisin At Night
Cruisin’ at Night spans the panorama of American pop – blues, folk, rock and even a little jazz – with Ludovico often deconstructing the style by drumming off the beat and writing in minor chords. They’ve created their own community, one that pays ironic homage to the rebellion against the simpler life to which they now aspire. Their errant time machine brought them back, whole, and it sounds just as fresh as the day the music was invented. This is a perfect world. And this is the perfect soundtrack.

Fatlips' ground floor vault
Technically, Fatlips Tower had five floors, however, as usual in these towers, the ground floor counts as one floor, even though it was actually two! I'll' try that again! This is the vaulted ground floor, which was originally divided into two levels by an entresol floor beneath its vault, the joists of which rested on the 'scarcement' (ledge) formed by the side walls. The only natural light to these two levels was from narrow slit-windows in the gables. Above this was the Hall on the 1st floor! ("But isn't that the 3rd floor?!)
There was less light in this room that the stitched together photo suggests, and I didn't really get a look at the contents until I saw the photo! The room mostly contains neat blocks of ashlar stone, which I presume has come from the missing parapet wall. It also contains the remains of two cannon carriages. These date back to the days when the castle was used by the Earls of Minto as a private museum for their collection of old weaponry. Amongst the collection were two cannon, which stood outside the castle (and are presumably now back at Minto House), described as follows:
(a) an early breech-loading gun about 5ft 5 in long with a bore of 1 1/4 in. and
(b) a very handsome muzzle-loading cannon, now kept outside the tower, measuring 8ft 3in in length with a bore of 4 7/8 in. Round the breach runs the inscription ASSVERVS KOSTER ME FECIT AMSTELREDAMI 1637 ('Ahasuerus Koster made me at Amsterdam in 1637'). The breech end is enriched with fleurs-de-lys; above the trunnions the barrel is encircled by a scrollwork. A modern inscription on the carriage records that 'This gun was taken by Admiral Elliot 28 Feb. 1760 from the French Squadron Commanded by Monsieur Thurot in naval action off the Isle of Man'.

Hamilton Library, University of Hawaii at Mnoa, Honolulu.
The Ground Floor Blessing Ceremony occurred on May 17th, 2010. The blessing was conducted by Kahu David Kaupu, and the event was attended by Library faculty, staff and student assistants.
The last 5 1/2 years (when the flash flood destroyed the ground floor) have been challenging, but the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight. The photo above was taken in the brand new Government Documents and Maps Reference area.

Great Gatsby Meets rocksteady over a birthday brunch.
It was of course, really brilliant of me to move in the hottest week of the summer yet, and I've spent much of the last week sweating it up, lost in nostalgia, knee-deep in debris, old notes that friends wrote me in junior high, or in mixtapes pals and crushes have made or endless records I've accumulated or all the countless costumes and thematic outfits I apparently feel the need to buy at every thrift store in every state at every chance I can get. So, inspired by all the summer heat, the music, the random costumes, and a nostalgia for the past---with the addition of my special favorites--friends, delicious food and theme parties....
I am hosting a Jazz and Rocksteady themed summer afternoon transcontinental birthday brunch that will hopefully make stops along the way from New Orleans circa 1943 to Kingston circa 1967, with a mini-visit to a sheesha cafe in Jerusalem aka al Quds-the homeland for a person without a homeland-, circa 1954, both musically and digestively!
The menu is slated to include:
-Peaches and cream
-biscuits and gravy
-red beans and rice
-jambalaya
-hummus
-foul
-cucumber mint yoghurt salad
-grilled vegetable medleys
-an assortment of tea and fancy tea cups!
-little cakes
-caribbean fruit cocktails
-bread pudding
and we can all get a little summer afternoon toasted on:
-mint juleps
-gin and tonics
-champagne cocktails
-mimosas
-Red Stripe
Thematic attire requested. Great Gatbsy meets rocksteady. It will be great! We can get tipsy and dance about the hardwood floors eating pastries and sultrily rubbing ice cubes on our necks.
Doorway Musician
Guitar Man
Well I quit my job down at the carwash I left my mama a goodbye note
By sundown I'd left Kingston with my guitar under my coat
I hitchhiked all the way down to Memphis got a room at the YMCA
For the next three weeks I went a hauntin' them night clubs
Lookin' for a place to play
Well I thought my pickin' would set 'em on fire
But nobody wanted to hire a guitar man
Well I nearly bout starved to death down in Memphis I run out of money and
luck
So I bummed me a ride down to Macon Georgia on a overloaded poultry truck
I thumbed on down to Panama City started checkin' out some of them all night
bars
Hopin' I can make myself a dollar makin' music on my guitar
Got the same old story at them all night piers
There ain't no room around here for a guitar man we don't need a guitar man
son
So I slept in the hobo jungles I bummed a thousand miles of track
Till I found myself in Mobile Alabama in a club they call Big Jack's
A little four piece band was jammin' so I took my guitar and I sat in
I showed 'em what a band would sound like
With a swingin' little guitar man show 'em son
So if you ever take a trip down to the ocean find yourself down round
Mobile
Well make it on out to the club called Jack's if you got a little time to
Kill.
Just follow that crowd of people you'll wind up out on his dance floor
Diggin' the finest little five piece group up and down the Gulf of Mexico
And guess who's leadin' that five piece band
Why wouldn't you know it's that swingin' little guitar man yeah!

LAYING SOLID WOOD FLOORING : LAYING SOLID
Laying Solid Wood Flooring : On The Ground Floor : Anderson Engineered Wood Flooring.
Laying Solid Wood Flooring
- Wood flooring is any product manufactured from timber that is designed for use as flooring, either structural or aesthetic. Bamboo flooring is often considered a wood floor, although it is made from a grass (bamboo) rather than a timber.
- Most wood flooring is made of hardwoods, such as oak, maple, pecan, beech and birch. There is solid wood flooring and laminated, which combines wood layered in different directions for strength and to inhibit warping.
- Most often made from hardwoods like maple, pecan, beech, birch or oak.
- Put down, esp. gently or carefully
- Prevent (something) from rising off the ground
- (laid) set down according to a plan:"a carefully laid table with places set for four people"; "stones laid in a pattern"
- (lay) ballad: a narrative song with a recurrent refrain
- the production of eggs (especially in birds)
- Put down and set in position for use
- characterized by good substantial quality; "solid comfort"; "a solid base hit"
- Firm and stable in shape; not liquid or fluid
- Strongly built or made of strong materials; not flimsy or slender
- Having three dimensions
- matter that is solid at room temperature and pressure
- the state in which a substance has no tendency to flow under moderate stress; resists forces (such as compression) that tend to deform it; and retains a definite size and shape
144 West 14th Street Building
Chelsea, Manhattan
144 West 14th Street is a grandly-proportioned Renaissance Revival-style loft building. Faced with limestone, tan brick and terra cotta, it was designed by the architects Brunner & Tryon in 1895-96. Seven stories tall, the street facade is articulated through a series of monumental arches, embellished with handsome classical details. Brunner, who began his career in the office of the noted architect George B. Post, designed many institutional structures in Manhattan, including synagogues and hospitals, as well as buildings on the campuses of Barnard, Columbia, and City College.
During the mid-1890s, the firm designed a series of commercial buildings in Manhattan, reflecting the influence of the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the rise of the City Beautiful movement. 144 West 14th Street was built for the real estate developer Joseph L. Buttenwieser, who sold it in 1897 to Frederick Hill Meserve, an early collector of fine art photography, who conveyed it to his uncle, Seth M. Milliken, of the textile firm Deering, Milliken & Company, in 1899.
Since its completion, many commercial tenants have occupied various floors, including R. H. Macy’s, which produced flags and silk underwear here, the silversmith Graff, Washbourne & Dunn, as well as Epiphone, a leading manufacturer of stringed instruments. In 1941, the noted American jazz guitarist Les Paul assembled a “solid-body” electric guitar in the company’s workshop; it became the prototype for many electric guitars played today. 144 West 14th Street was acquired by Pratt Institute in 1999. Restored by Ehrenkrantz, Eckstut & Kuhn Architects, it now serves as the school’s Manhattan campus.
Development of West 14th Street
144 West 14th Street is located on the south side of 14th Street, midway between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. Among the various streets envisioned by the Commissioner’s Plan of 1811, 14th Street was one of the most southerly. Opened between the Bowery and the Hudson River in 1828, it developed into a mostly residential thoroughfare, lined with fine private homes. At 146 West 14th Street originally stood the home of merchant Richard P. Dana, constructed in 1854.2 Immediately to the west was the Church of the Annunciation (1846) where the exhumed body of United States President James Monroe (1758-1831) lay in state in 1858 before its final reburial in Virginia.
West 14th Street became increasingly commercial during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. An elevated railway began service along Sixth Avenue in 1880, and various stores clustered where it intersected with 14th Street, such as the R. H. Macy’s and B. Altman Dry Goods Stores. Streetcars also served the area, including a cross-town line that delivered passengers to the Hudson River waterfront and the Upper (Hoboken) Ferry. These transit routes made West 14th Street an ideal location for both retail stores and manufacturing.
Toward the close of the nineteenth century, New York City became a leading distribution center for the dry-goods trade, attracting numerous warehouses, factories, and showrooms. Passage of the New York State Factory Act in 1892 made home production more difficult, leading to the creation of larger workshops and the need for new structures to house these operations. With few lots available for development in lower Manhattan, manufacturers looked north and a new loft district took shape in midtown, chiefly between 14th and 42nd Streets. Close to suppliers and public transit, these facilities were typically built with freight elevators, open and flexible floor plans, high ceilings, and large windows.3
Joseph L. Buttenwieser
In early 1895 the church and the adjoining Dana house were acquired by Joseph L. Buttenwieser (1865-1938).4 Born in Philadelphia to Lemmmlein and Leah Heller Buttenwieser, the family moved to New York City in 1873. His German-born father was a professor of languages, who taught in the public school system until 1886. Joseph received his bachelor of arts degree from City College in 1883, and a law degree from New York Law School in 1887. He began his fifty-year career as a “real estate operator” in the late 1880s, focusing his activity on property transactions and construction in midtown and lower Manhattan. A major philanthropist, he supported the Citizen’s Union, the Hebrew Technical Institute, and the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies. Many of these activities involved architectural projects; as a member of the Associated Alumni of City College he helped raise funds to erect a new library, and as a trustee of the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society he oversaw construction of the society’s buildings in Pleasantville, New York.5
Brunner & Tryon, Architects
To develop his West 14th Street property, Buttenwieser hired the architects Brunner & Tryon. During the early 1890s, this firm designed many buildings for Jewish institutions and it is likely tha

MEZZANINE FLOOR STAIRCASE - MEZZANINE FLOOR
MEZZANINE FLOOR STAIRCASE - WHOLESALE TIMBER FLOORING - HOW TO BUILD A RAISED FLOOR.
Mezzanine Floor Staircase
- mezzanine: intermediate floor just above the ground floor
- In architecture, a mezzanine or entresol is an intermediate floor between main floors of a building, and therefore typically not counted among the overall floors of a building. Often, a mezzanine is low-ceilinged and projects in the form of a balcony.
- (Mezzanine Floors) An intermediate floor or floors between the ground and roof level in your building, utilising the available headroom fully. Available in a range of load bearing capacities they can provide space for offices, storage or production and can be served by staircases or lifts.
- stairway: a way of access (upward and downward) consisting of a set of steps
- Staircase is the fourth solo album released on ECM by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett. It features Jarrett performing four solo piano pieces recorded in the studio.
- Stairway, staircase, stairwell, flight of stairs or simply stairs are names for a construction designed to bridge a large vertical distance by dividing it into smaller vertical distances, called steps.
- A set of stairs and its surrounding walls or structure
The Staircase
Directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade (Murder on a Sunday Morning), THE STAIRCASE is like the most suspenseful of page-turners, adding "layers of complexity until one is entirely hooked by its ambiguities and twists and turns." (Chicago Tribune) One of the most highly acclaimed documentaries in recent years, this shocking, real-life thriller follows the high-profile murder trial of North Carolina author Michael Peterson, who was arraigned in 2001 for the murder of his wife after her body is discovered lying in a pool of blood on the stairway of the couple's upscale Durham home. Did Kathleen Peterson fall down the stairs, or was it cold-blooded murder? As the mystery unravels, de Lestrade's cameras are granted unusual access to Peterson's lawyers, home, and immediate family, resulting in a gripping, inside look at a case so shocking, it is sure to leave you gasping for breath.
It's Law & Order come to life as the Sundance Channel's consistently absorbing, often riveting The Staircase chronicles a sensational North Carolina murder case from the crime to the verdict. When Kathleen Peterson was found dead in her Durham, NC mansion in December '01, her husband, novelist Michael Peterson, claimed she had fallen down a narrow staircase. The authorities disagreed, and Peterson was charged with first degree murder. Thereafter, director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade and his crew were given almost unrestricted access to the defendant (who remained free on bail) and his legal team, as well as to the district attorney and the prosecution crew, albeit to a lesser extent. There are countless meetings to map out defense strategy, dozens of interviews (including many with Peterson himself; he's not an especially sympathetic character), scenes of pre-trial home life, excerpts from Court TV coverage, and so on. The filmmakers follow the prosecution investigators to Texas, where we see a body exhumed; there's even a trip to Germany to look into a previous death in which Peterson may or may not have been involved.
The result is both exhaustive and exhausting; indeed, it's not until the end of the fourth of the series' eight episodes (each is about 45 minutes long) that the actual trial begins. By then, various revelations about Peterson, ranging from surprising to unsavory to downright sordid, have proved once again that truth really is stranger than fiction. In fact, while the four-month trial is interesting, it doesn't reveal much that we don't already know. Unlike most so-called "reality" programming, The Staircase is the genuine article. That means that it lacks the constant throb of big, dramatic scenes provided by your average TV cop-courtroom show, especially as the series is well over six hours long. Still, although one might easily skip to Episode 8 to learn the outcome, there's more than enough suspense to justify watching every minute of it, and regardless of one's expectations, the announcement of the verdict is a jolting moment. Only two key elements remain unexplained: What went on in the jury room during deliberations? And did Peterson do it, or not? Only he knows, and he ain't talkin'. --Sam Graham

Isometric Floor Plan
The house is designed as a series of living levels or "trays for living," say architect Becker. The cutaway drawing above shows how these level follow the topography of the site. One continuous deck wraps around the house: a loft that will be filled eventually, with supplemental, rotational planting looks directly down on the living and dining areas.

Spillers (Avonmouth) BS11
Spillers flour and animal foodstuff factory at Avonmouth as seen in the late 1940s. Spillers factory was inside the dock area at Avonmouth, it was a flour mill, an animal feed mill, and a dry petfood factory.
Ships would pull up alongside the factory and the grain and other strange ingredients would be sucked up into giant silos. The factories were quit tall, being on about eight levels, and almost everything inside except the machinery was made of wood. If you didn't want to climb all those stairs there were "man lifts" attached to a continuously moving belt.
You had to jump on and off at the right moment before the little platform disappeared through the ceiling or the floor. There was also high speed unprotected belts and a spiral sack chute. - a very dangerous place but also very interesting with some real characters working in it.
Tomkins Acquires Spillers Flour Milling
Tomkins PLC international manufacturing company, is pleased to announce that agreement has been reached with Kerry Group plc to acquire the Spillers flour milling business for a total cash consideration of 92 million pounds. This follows Kerry's proposed purchase of Spillers Milling and Ingredients Divisions from Dalgety plc announced on January 26, 1998.
In the year to June 30, 1997, the business being acquired by Tomkins produced an operating profit of 10.7 million pounds on turnover of 148.3 million pounds. The net assets at the year end were 44.5 million pounds. The transaction comprises six mills located at Avonmouth, Birkenhead, Cambridge, Liverpool, Newcastle and Tilbury and also includes Fleming Howden, the Scottish bakers supply operation. The total number of employees is approximately 650.
Tomkins' Rank Hovis subsidiary, acquired in 1992 as part of the purchase of Ranks Hovis McDougall plc, is one of the UK's leading flour millers with eleven mills.
Gregory Hutchings, Tomkins' Executive Chairman said: "We are delighted to be able to make this "add-on" acquisition to one of our key business activities which builds on an existing area of excellence. Rank Hovis will benefit significantly from the enlarged company which will have an unequaled range of brands, products and technologies to meet all the needs of the flour using industry across the UK."
