Baby is still a right wriggler and I can often see little limbs pushing outwards and making my tummy go a funny shape! Yet to capture that on camera but I will try and get it on video before baby arrives. Whenever I see someone who I haven't seen for a while they ask me whether I know the sex of the baby, which I don't. We opted to have another surprise this time round like we did with Chap. That is more than Spina Bifida, Down Syndrome and Sickle Cell Disease all combined. CHDs are the number 1 cause of birth defect related deaths. CHDs kill twice as many infants and children as all types of childhood cancer combined. Even with these statistics, CHD research is extrememly underfunded. Pediatric Oncology gets nearly 5 times the funding as CHDs. For every dollar donated to a general or government health fund, less than one penny goes to CHD research. Less than 25% of the American Heart Association's revenue goes to research. Of that 25%, only about 1% goes to pediatric cardiology and CHD research. That's $0.25 out of every $100. My daughter was born with a serious Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. She has been through 3 massive open heart surgeries, 2 heart caths and countless other procedures and hospital stays. Every year we hold a golf outing fundraiser to raise money for the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, where Heidi was born and had all of her surgeries at. Dr. Fatima might not weigh more than a healthy teen ager but she reached the farthest place in Pakistani border on her feet after travelling 10hours of long and dreadful journey. Capt. Qari Saifullah had 5 children and an ailing wife with paralyzed mother but he spent entire month in those mountains looking for anyone who might need a doctor or food or a hand to lift you. Usman worked with British team 18hours relentlessly under the darkness of Margalla Towers searching for his best friend in his damaged office. He could never save him but he found his family and he got his friend's father out. And while he couldn't save his friend or even see his damaged body for it was too heart-breaking for him, he has remained at your place, in your world for one whole year managing a base camp many people like him helped building. Sanaullah is only 16 and because his school is also damaged, he couldn't complete his Matriculation exam and go to Abbottabad for higher studies, but for one whole year, he's grown with your orphaned kids, with your widowed women and he's fed your new born baby. Update By far the biggest development this past month has been the talking. The talking. The non-stop talking. I often feel like I live with a parrot. But it's so freaking cute and she seems to love to do it, so there you go. Most of her words are just syllables or sounds of words, not the complete word, but I understand her most of the time. At 14 months, off the top of my head, her vocabulary consists of: Mama, and now a sudden switch to Mommy Papa Ta-Ta (for Natalya, who she nanny-shares with) Cla (for Claudia) Book Cop (she saw a helicopter a week ago and still hasn't shut up about it) Bye Hi Kkk for cat Dada for dog Truck Elmo Baby Rock ssss for stroller, shower, shoes, socks, anything that starts with S More Bok for chicken Baa (for what a sheep says) Mmmm (for what a cow says) Neck for necklace Home Box Bus EM! for M&M's Ice, for ice cream Milk Ba, for bottle Nurse, clear as a bell Ni-Ni, for night-night Park Gi for Grandma Yesterday, I was saying "Hi, Papa. Baby's first food:Day ninety six (8/17/10) Eve got her first real food today! Home made organic apple sauce! I went to the beach with my mom this afternoon. It was a nice little break from life, everything was serene, and I didn't have to worry about having to find a job every second of every minute. After the beach my mom and I went to Taco Tuesday at our yacht club. I must say, the BYC makes some amazing Mexican food. After dinner I went to my sister's house to pick up my car and found them preparing apples for Eve's first meal. Obviously, I had to stay and document the moment. On Tuesday, August 17th in the year 2010 Eve had her very first meal of organic apple sauce, and she loved it! What a trooper! On to more meals Eve! Baby food, packed for the freezer Each tub has about 3 tbsp packed inside. I will be able to fill them to about 6 tbsp once his appetite increases. Grizzly Bear Breast Feeding Her Cub This was taken at Sheepeater's Cliffs in Yellowstone National Park. My wife, nine year old granddaughter and I were very fortunate to watch them for three hours. This story started about 5:30 in the morning. It was foggy, drizzling, and very poor lighting. Terrible for photography! At times, I was shooting at 1/30th of a second with an ISO of 2000. I was shooting outside the window of my truck using a large beanbag. I feel very fortunate I was able to get fairly sharp shots. The mom had just run down an elk calf. It was quite sad to see the elk mother calling down from up on the cliff. After the kill, the sow lost sight of her cub and started calling for him. She then ran up the road and brought him back, swimming across the river at one point. Twice, the cub breast fed. Also, two different times a wolf came in attempting to get a bite of the carcass. The sow would then start burying the carcass. As fast as she would cover it with dirt, the cub would uncover it! We were very close to the kill but the ranger let us stay because we had all four tires off the road and stayed in the vehicle. At one point before the ranger came, a lady jumped out of her car and walked across the road to where the cub was breast feeding. She was about 25 yards away from the animals. I warned her that the sow could have her in under 5 seconds. She just glared at me like I was crazy! Her older son ran across the road and pulled her back. Crazy people! When the ranger showed up, he stayed behind our truck the whole time. Finally, he went back to his truck and called for some more rangers to come and dispose of the carcass because of its close proximity to the road. As he did this, the sow kept her eyes on him the whole way. That was something to watch through the telephoto lens, her eyes following him all the way to the truck!! When the other rangers arrived, they fired concussion shotgun shells in the air to scare the bears away. The rangers then loaded up the carcass to dispose of. All in all, an experience never to be forgotten! chubba love 76/ 365 YIP i love her. she is the best baby ever. and so lucky to have her family. i could eat her up. getting caught up with my 365. day 76 was so enjoyable- I could photograph her all day. I'm going to cop out and claim that one of his birthday gifts is this baby I've got growing inside of me. Best homemade gift ever, right? And on that note, I have to say that I am very grateful to be pregnant, to be pregnant with Rob's offspring, to be pregnant with a seemingly healthy baby (and I've had a lot of ultrasounds to document this), and I am grateful that we have every reason to hope that I will be giving birth to a healthy baby in March 2011. It has not been an easy road, but I am unspeakably grateful to be where I am. Vital stats? 16 weeks and 5 days pregnant. First trimester was a cavalcade of my own physical misery tempered by good news after good news about the baby's development. Still working on my own health now that I'm in the second trimester, but I am enjoying this period of lessened morning sickness before I get too big to move around easily. The Eighth Weekend Twas a rough weekend. Since Isobel didn't sleep well on Friday night she didn't really let us sleep in long on Saturday. Since Saturday was my BPRD campaign and Brandi was going to Chilliwack we packed up the car and headed out. Downtown I noticed that the speedometer wasn't reading and over the Georgia Viaduct realised that it wasn't shifting into third gear. I pulled over and suddenly the power steering cut out and the oil light as well as the "Check engine" light flashed on...Shit. We mulled over the options and I took Brandi's option of driving it to the service place we go to in South Vancouver. They said they'd look it over and call us. We caught the bus to Richmond and partook in some World War 2 action. The shop called and said that there was a defective chip in the car. It wasn't that expensive. By the time it was fixed we were back home and relaxed so we decided to pick it up on Sunday. We also picked up another board game "Race for the Galaxy" and played it and Dominion after Isobel went to sleep. She's really not keen on sleeping lately. But she gets so cranky when she doesn't sleep enough. Saturday night was one of the worst nights in memory. She didn't go down until around 9:30 she cried once around 10ish and then was up at midnight. Brandi tried to get her down for an hour before she finally succumbed, she was up a half hour later. I got her back to sleep after about twenty minutes or so. however she was up again at 2, and again at 3:30 when I crawled into bed with her until 7. Yikes! Today since we had to go pick up the car mostly consisted of us running around. Oh also I shaved my head this morning. Took the bus from downtown the 80-90 blocks to get to the shop and got the car. We then headed over to the birds to say hello to little baby Cordelia. Upon returning to Vancouver we headed to the pool for our weekly visit. Since her swimming lessons are over we just did a bunch of the things we were taught in class with her. She wasn't really very keen on me dunking her. I think the instuctor did a better job of that...duh it's his job. Arriving at home we gave Isobel her dinner before shopping for groceries. The baby carrier is getting all stretched out, we need to wash it and let it shrink again. After a dinner of chicken, and pita and hummus we tossed her in the bath and then tried to get her down for the night. She's been screaming her face off intermittently for the last ten minutes. She'd calm down and then start up again. It's so frustrating because she's asleep on Brandi and when we put her into her crib she freaks right out. She's going to have to learn some day. But look at that cutie face...how can we stay frustrated with her? Samantha Saturday .....This Saturday Only!!!! ;) My little lady 4 Months Old today. And what a 4 months it has been. There have been a lot of trying times, but even more pleasant times. It's great to see her grow into own, and develop somewhat of a personality. She sometimes "talks" up a storm... she gives the most wonderful smiles... she's moving around in her sleep (it's always interesting to see where she ends up in her crib every morning)... and now, she's discoverd how tasty her fingers are. Of the countless pictures I have of her, this is probably my favorite so far (from a couple of weeks ago). And if anything, it's the one that most accurately shows what she really looks like. My wife and I sometimes get comments on she looks different from one picture to the next. But this one actually shows HER. And on a semi-side note, it's pretty hard to get a picture of her looking at the camera and smiling. Even when she's in the best of moods and just smiling away; as soon as I point the camera at her, she just gets straight-faced. nineteen weeks in the last week, bedtime has suddenly become a lengthy elaborate process involving nursing, storytime, rocking (standing up, not sitting down), listening to her talk to herself, giving her a blanket to hold a million times, rocking again, nursing again, more blanket, more rocking, etc. one week ago: rocking was fine. i don't know. she's also started making high-pitched squealing noises, &, apparently, chuckling. though i haven't heard any of that, so i can't vouch for it myself. i like this pic b/c she looks just like daniel when he was a baby. i think she mostly looks like him, except when she smiles real big -- then she looks like me. (the half-smile is all him.) (& for the record, i don't know how i take the same picture week after week & yet i can't ever frame it the same. not even close!) Mary, beloved. At my grandma's 80th birthday party, we have here Mary, the First Great-Grandchild (I'm the First Grandchild), being somewhat taken aback by all the attention she's getting from all her first-cousins-once-removed. :-> That's Patience (Sixth Grandchild) holding her, and Mary's Uncle Jason (the Second Grandchild, five years down from me) accidentally walking into frame and looking like he's doing the kiss equivalent of the old 'I'm squeeshing your head!" skit. For a cheerful, smiley baby, Mary had a talent for looking upset/angry/constipated the INSTANT I had my camera out. I also wish the church basement we had the party in (it was also something of a reunion) had been better-lit so I could have gotten crisper shots. Ahhwell. Big ears These monkeys are in a very small cage at Buu Long zoo although some of them are small enough to fit though the bars. Animal rights have a long way to come in Vietnam and its very unpleasant to see them caged up like this. Bien Hoa is a city in Dong Nai Province, Vietnam, about 20 miles (32 km) (30 kilometers) east of Saigon, to which Bien Hoa is linked by Vietnam Highway 1. In 1989 the estimated population was over 300,000. And now in 2005, population increased to 541,495, and some estimates show that the city has 604,548 people in 2007 Bien Hoa grew into a major suburb of Saigon (later renamed Ho Chi Minh City) as the capital city of South Vietnam grew. Following the First Indochina War, tens of thousands of refugees from the northern and central regions of Vietnam—a large portion of them Roman Catholics—resettled in Bien Hoa as part of Operation Passage to Freedom. During the Vietnam War, the United States Air Force operated Bien Hoa Air Base near the city. Nonetheless, a significant number of the city's residents sympathized with, or were members of, the Viet Cong. Mortar attacks on U.S. and ARVN targets were frequently staged from residential districts in Bien Hoa. With regard to entertainment, the city includes several amusement parks, night clubs and restaurants lining the Dong Nai River. Construction has increased rapidly (with many Western-style houses and villas under development), and the real estate market has experienced a series of boom cycles since the mid-1990s. The retail market still includes the many ad hoc bazaar-type markets and shop-fronts common to most of Vietnam, but now also includes air-conditioned, enclosed shopping malls, one of which, a Big C branch, includes a KFC restaurant, a Western-style grocery store, a bowling alley and video arcade, among others. Black-Capped Capuchin Monkey This is one of the newly arrived Black-capped Capuchin Monkey species at Royal Melbourne Zoo. (RMZ) There several new babies– and the monkey clan are certainly fascinated by the new members – some of the aunts and uncles seem to be fighting each other to get to hold the baby – and Mum is very aggressive in defending her own. A recent BBC TV series screened on Australian TV about bringing up human baby has had much attention and controversy due to exploring 3 different parenting philosophies, including one called the Continuum Concept, where the baby is always held or in physical contact with its parents or extended family for at least 6 months – it sure looks like these monkeys have modelled this method long before the South American indigenous tribes, after whom the method has been based. It’s amazing how the baby monkeys can hang-on to mother, even as mother is jumping or climbing the highest branches! These monkeys are often used in TV and movies, such as “Pirates Of the Caribbean “ films as they look like the "monkey" that many people think of - These monkeys have been quite active during my visits in the past few weeks, and it’s been a real highlight for me, and plenty of other visitors - In their native South America, Black-capped Capuchins are found in primary and secondary rainforest through to semi-deciduous lowland areas. They have a varied diet, including many kinds of fruit, nuts, seeds, pith, and nectar, plus animal prey including insects, chicks, frogs, reptiles, bats, and even small mammals weighing up to 900g. Black-capped Capuchins are acknowledged as being one of the primate species that uses tools. For example, they use rocks to help them crack open the nuts that feature in their diets.
