Victorian Decor (Schiffer Book for Collectors) The best craftsmanship in home furnishings of the late 19th century is documented in this beautiful study by a dedicated connoisseur. At a time when American and European economies were expanding quickly, consumers' tastes were increasingly elaborate and refined. Demand for exquisite design, fine materials, and masterful workmanship resulted in interiors of a calibre never equalled or surpassed since. This book presents an overview of those Victorian architectural antiques, stained glass windows, furniture, art glass, lighting devices, match holders, and poster art in chapters that explain the development of the forms and show examples in over 400 color photographs. Period room settings as well as single items are featured. Especially strong here are the pieces that demonstrate originality in Tiffany windows and art glass, Mitchell and Rammelsburg furniture, Globe-Wernicke bookcases, French Burgun Schverer and English cameo glass, and Duffner and Kimberly lamps. More and more people today recognize and seek out the superior quality of Victorian antiques. With this new book as a guide, they will learn important details to help identify originals and marvel at the beauty they can hope to find. Current price ranges are included with the captions. (10) 1 Pendleton Place House New Brighton, Staten Island Constructed in 1860 by architect Charles Duggin for William S. Pendleton, this exceptional house is a rare surviving example in New York City of a High Victorian picturesque villa incorporating elements of the English Rustic and Swiss Styles. Designed to complement its hillside site, which commanded views of New York and New Jersey, the house features a dominant tower and multiple porches. It is richly embellished with decorative details and is surmounted by a complexly-massed gabled roof, which is set off by overhanging eaves, exposed rafters, open work brackets, decorative trusses, and several prominent chimneys. Born and trained as an architect in England, Duggin immigrated to New York City in 1853, where he became a prominent designer and developer of residential architecture. This house was published twice, in 1862 and 1869, in the Horticulturalist magazine, the journal which helped popularize picturesque designs in the United States. This house and Duggin’s earlier house at 22 Pendleton Place (c. 1855, a designated New York City Landmark), are considered to be his best-known works Both were part of a complex of seven houses designed by Duggin. William S. Pendleton, a prominent businessman who together with his brother John had established the first commercially successful lithographic firm in the United States, moved to Staten Island around 1845 where he served as president of the North Shore Ferry Company and invested in real estate. The 1 Pendleton Place House was initially leased to stockbroker Thomas M. Rianhard and in later years was occupied by members of the Pendleton family. From the mid-1920s to the mid-1940s the house was owned by William Wirt Mills, a prominent journalist and political leader, who served as Tax Commissioner for the Borough of Staten Island and later as Tax Commissioner for the City of New York under Mayor LaGuardia. The present owners have undertaken a careful restoration of the house and received an award from the Preservation League of Staten Island in 2005. Description Grounds: The 1 Pendleton Place House is located on a quarter-circle-shaped lot at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Pendleton Place. The lot has a frontage of 209 feet along Franklin Avenue, extends 210 feet through the block to Pendleton Avenue, and has a curving frontage of about 327 feet along Pendleton Place. The house is set back from the streets on the high ground near the middle of the southern property line. The land has been terraced around the house, especially at the front where there is an oval driveway and in rear yard where there is a raised garden. There is a non-historic concrete retaining wall along the northern edge of the property at the intersection of Pendleton Place and Franklin Avenue. On the east side of the property mid-way along the Franklin Avenue frontage there is a historic bluestone paver leading from the sidewalk to a non-historic concrete stair with a non-historic iron pipe rail. Near the southwest corner of the property there is a driveway opening on to Pendleton Place. The location of the driveway is historic but the current asphalt surface is not. Leading off from the entry to driveway is a non-historic flagstone and concrete path that leads to a non-historic concrete patio at the rear of the house. A non-historic concrete path also wraps around the west wing of the house leading to front driveway and the front entrance on the north side of the house. The low concrete and brick curbs that flank sections of the paths and driveway probably date from the first half of the twentieth century. Two concrete urns (planters) on bases, located near the driveway, also probably date from the first half of the twentieth century. The brick ground cover in front of the east porch on the north facade appears to be composed of historic brick. The asphalt path adjacent to the east side of the house is non-historic. A non-historic concrete retaining wall with a built in bench and brick and stone staircase are located at the southeast corner of the rear patio. The staircase provides access to the upper garden. House: The picturesquely designed frame house is irregular in plan and massing. It is comprised of a cross-gabled three-story main block, with a four story conical-roofed entry tower set in the angle between the north and west wings and a one-story shed-roofed pantry wing on the rear elevation filling the space between the south and east wings. The angle-ended west wing is surrounded by a one-story veranda. There is also a one story porch in the angle between the north and east wings. The house rests on a sandstone foundation, which has traces of old light-colored cement mortar patching at some of its joints. The upper walls are sheathed with non-historic lapped cedar clapboard siding. The baseboards and corner posts are also non-historic. The windows retain their original molded wood surrounds. An engraving of the hou Edward Onslow Ford - The Singer - antique book photo front left Just as a small addendum to my photos of The Singer at the Tate Britain gallery, I'm including two images from antique art books. Bear in mind that for many years these photos, and maybe one or two others that I haven't found yet, were the only images of this amazing statue available *anywhere*. To the best of my knowledge these black and white images are in the public domain due to their age. I have painstakingly whited out the original light grey background and adjusted the contrast for clarity. If you look carefully, you'll see that the old photos show a couple of small features that have since been lost or broken. The more obvious one is the spiralling spike on top of the ibis's crown at the base of the harp. More subtly, the uppermost tip of the harp itself is no longer there today. I don't think those are huge problems in terms of the statue's aesthetic value, though it would be nice if they could be replaced. You can also see that in this photo some of the harpstrings are bent. In the other black and white photo most of them have been straightened, and of course they were all fixed by the time I took the colour images. It's also worth noting that at the time this photo was taken the statue's polychrome decoration was concealed by a protective layer of brown wax. It was not until the 1990s that the Tate's restoration team were able to restore it to the state in which it appears in the colour photos. a m victorian decorations Replete with jam-packed rooms and luscious details, Formal Victorian melds architectural profiles, sumptuous interior decor, and stylish displays of collectibles into a handsome package. Apart from a one-page introduction to each of the five sections (exterior decoration; interior details; dressing walls, windows, and floors; elegant furnishings; and traditional touches), the text consists of extensive captions outlining points of Victorian style and offering hints for transposing these looks into your own home. Though the Victorians often tended toward darker colors, some of the photos are a bit too dark, but the intriguing details still manage to shine through. Decorating A Beach House. Modern Kids Decor. Bathroom Decor Ideas Decorating A Beach House
Beach Houses: From Malibu to Laguna Beach Houses are the first survey of the glamorous beachfront lifestyle and distinctive architecture and design for which Southern California is so famous. The houses featured in this book are located on the coast between Malibu and Laguna and range from common types-- New England, Mediterranean and ranch designs-- to high-style homes by well-known architects such as John Lautner, Richard Meier, Frank Gehry, and others. Beaches and beach houses have played an important part in the historical and cultural development of Southern California, beginning in the 1880s when land speculators wanted to attract home-buyers, and especially during the 1920s when the motion picture community and other nouveau riche built lavish houses and clubs on the shore. Architectural writer Elizabeth McMillian has selected a stunning array of Southern California beach residences that receive high marks for appearance, comfort, and sensitivity to the environment. Every beach house designer faces similar constraints and challenges: small lots, low-key street facades, enclosed sidewalls, narrow paths to the ocean, and glass-walled and terraced oceanfronts. If a beach house is designed with sensitivity, living on the beach can be an experience that is close to perfection. Photographer Melba Levick has dramatically captured the California beach house in its enviable seaside context and has focused on interiors that bring the sights and sounds of the ocean into the home by way of glass walls, open courtyards, terraces, and towers. Interviews with the architects, interior designers, and owners of these fabulous California houses reveal the inspirational dimension embodied in this special architecture. "A beach house is often the fulfillment of a dream, as well as a quest for the sensual varieties of site, sound, and touch-- the opportunity to feel gentle sea breezes, warm to the reassuring rays of the sun, and hear the lulling, rhythmic sound of wind and waves," explains McMillian. Birthday Cake Decorating Ideas For Boys : Ocean Bathroom Decor Birthday Cake Decorating Ideas For Boys
Ryan's 18th birthday This is a simple cake I made for my son's close friend who turned 18 today! I didn't have ANY ideas of how I wanted to decorate it, when I opened up my wilton tool box I saw a paper napkin that I saved because I thought it would make a great design for a cake, so that's what I did! { I think it's SO hard making cakes for teenaged boys} this is an 8 inch white cake with oreo cookie buttercream. Frosted in vanilla buttercream and decorated with fondant circles and edible "confetti"....the number '18' on top is gumpaste with a tiny bit of gum tragacanth mixed into it so that it would set up more quickly...I used my funky tappits to cut out the numbers, using two layers for each number, sandwiched, with a small wire in between, then painted with vodka & americolors gel! I'm not posting photo because it's particularly special, but I decided to work on my piping skills....and it's a good way to track my progress, ( or lack thereof) I'm not a fan of piping on anything, I would rather NOT do a cake if it means that my only method of decorating is buttercream piping!! I'm hoping that with a little bit of patience, and a LOT of practice, I'll at least get to a point that I don't absolutely LOATHE piping.... {but I really doubt it}!!~~ Cars inspired cake with matching cuppies What can I say....I love the whole "inspired" design element. It's fun to turn round cakes into a recognizable theme. Again I had no real idea what I was going to do until I began decorating....boys cakes do it to me every time!! Then it came to me....what if I did a Mater inspired tier and a lightning inspired tier and together the become Frankin-car...lol I finally have been busting out the airbrush more. I airbrushed maters finish and sad to say Lightnings too....although I think I should have gone heavier. I airbrushed him with red luster. I was going for his retro look with his glitter paint job. Had lots of fun =D Ka Chow! The Children in Room E4: American Education on Trial Compelling and critically acclaimed by educators, policymakers, and the media, The Children in Room E4 tells the story of one student, one classroom, and one resolute teacher. In the midst of Band-Aid reforms and hotshot superintendents with empty promises, drug dealers and street gangs, Ms. Luddy's star student, Jeremy, and his fellow classmates must overcome tremendous challenges to succeed. Susan Eaton takes us inside and outside their classroom as she reveals the repercussions of ignoring urban schools that are cut off from mainstream America. And she introduces us to a team of civil rights lawyers fighting an intrepid battle to end the de facto segregation that beleaguers not only Jeremy's school but urban schools throughout the country. kitchen/dining room The house feels quite festive. I have a few more photos to take to show you all of our decorations, but you get the idea. Can you tell I am a fan of the orange pumpkin trick-or-treat buckets? I found most of my collection at thrift shops and yard sales for about .10 each. I love getting out pour little model skeleton each year, and the vintage cut outs that I found at Goodwill with their old yellowed tape stuck on the back. The cat shower curtain was my attempt to create a vintage looking cat---and I am not very pleased with how it turned out, but the boys like it. I just used acrylic paint on a plain shower curtain (the kind that would still need a liner behind it) Drew out my design with pencil, and filled it all in. I kept adding stuff to it because I wasn't happy with it, and in the end probably went a little overboard with all the white lines haha. It was for our downstairs bathroom (only guests ever use the shower in there) so acrylic paint was fine for us since their will not be any humidity. Now I've gotta run, and pick up some supplies. We are staying in tonight making beaded spiders, a big pot of soup, and playing songs from our new Halloween mix which include Louis Armstrong's The Skeleton In The Closet, Bobby "Boris" Pickett's Werewolf Watusi, and The Premier Quartet's The Skeleton Rag. I am so in love with old Halloween songs, my only wish was that there were more more more. Not me did it When something has gone wrong. If there is only one around, just try to prove it was not you. Leaving the safety of the living room is not a wise idea at the moment, if you are spotted - you will get the blame. It's case of can you wait a little longer. (14) Corrugated Iron Holden Station Wagon from the Te Papa website: Corrugated iron Holden station wagon Artist Jeff Thomson is well known for his corrugated iron sculptures, especially his elephants and cows. One corrugated iron beast a little different from the others is Thomson's HQ Holden - a 1974 Holden station wagon clad in corrugated iron. Although this car originally had a motor and was driven around, the motor has now been removed and the aerial bent into the shape of Australia, the Holden's country of origin. Thomson first had the idea for a vehicle clad in some kind of material, which he describes as 'a whimsical thought that never left me', while travelling on a train in Germany. He noticed that the roofs of many houses in Germany were covered with slate and tiles, and he was determined to clad a vehicle on his return home. Six months later, back in New Zealand, Thomson went on a recycling mission to the rubbish dump, where he found rusty sheets of corrugated iron that had originally come from the roof of the Criterion Hotel in Napier, which had been gutted by fire on Halloween night. Thomson lovingly plated his own car with corrugated iron, transforming a functional item into a work of art. He curved the corrugated iron sheets to hug the shape of the vehicle, then riveted them on. Thomson did not put his HQ Holden into a gallery straight away, but drove it around on the open road, both in New Zealand and Australia. It was his only vehicle for three years, and he carried all his rusty corrugated iron on the roof. The car was later transported to Australia, exhibited in Sydney, and driven around. 'This mobile artwork has been seen all over New Zealand roads and is a traffic-stopper. Everywhere it goes it attracts crowds who marvel at its skilled use of materials and originality: "Hey! A moving fence!" (1). 'Art at 50k an hour' (2). Thomson first started working in corrugated iron when decorating letter-boxes, following his many walks around rural New Zealand. He created a number of animals, mainly cows, for his letter-box series in hardwood and corrugated iron. He then started making corrugated iron animals, including penguins, elephants and cows followed by other objects such as people and typewriters! Corrugated iron is a distinctively New Zealand material and Thomson uses it extensively. A popular artist with a great sense of humour, Jeff Thomson pokes fun at New Zealand icons and puts them in the spotlight, making us look at them in a whole new light. References (1) Perry, John F. Those fateful words still bring a smile to my face. They were uttered 13 years ago by my son Michael. He was 5 at the time and I was his assistant soccer coach. Unlike his younger brother, David, Michael initially lacked an inate passion for sports. Things have changed. Today, he loves sports, soccer included. But back then...he would rather watch trains go by. In fact, his room was decorated with...trains. Hmmm....I wonder who gave him that passion? Anyways...when I realized our son's game was being played one evening next to the train tracks I immeditately turned to our head coach and expressed my concern. His glib response was to assure me that the children were safe due to the fence, but that was not at all what I was referring to. "You'll see"...I muttered. Sure enough, late in the game with the score tied, the other team had the ball. Michael and another boy were on defence. It then happened. A train started to zoom down the track. Michael turned to me and shouted ..."Daddy...Daddy...train"...and bolted to the fence to watch the locomotive roar by. His defensive partner joined him, leaving our unfortunately goalie unprotected. Needless to say...the other team scored...and eventually won the game. After the train passed, Michael sheepishly walked back to me. The groans of some of the parents had alerted him that he had not done what was required. He looked up at me with his big brown eyes and asked..."Daddy? Did I do something wrong?" I could have scolded him. I could have benched him. I could have given him a speach about team sports, responsibility and life. I could have...but...I didn't. He was 5 and his whole life was ahead of him. This was house league. It was supposed to be fun, "No Mikey. It's ok". I responded. I figured I had a life time to teach him the finer details of life. But...that day...the only lesson to be learned was...enjoy life. Michael turns 18 in a few days. Today was a very bittersweet day. We drove him to university where he will be living away from home. He's our first child to move away from home. It's only an hour away and I will be dropping by on occasion and seeing him. How times have changed...he's taking Sports Management. So much for trains (*grin*). We're very proud of him...and I realize that this is all part of life. Our children have to spread their wings and fly on their own. As parents our job is to teach our children, guide them and encourage them...but to let them fly. We can't fly for them. I get all that. But just the same...tonight... No Mikey...you did nothing wrong. We're really, really proud of you. Keep doing well in school..and keep making us proud. ~ Love, Dad, Mom, Jessica and David. ~ Michael (on the left) and his friend/teammate Matthew when they played soccer...but preferred to watch trains. 1998; Mississauga, ON; Canada. My Dad ~ It Has Been 13 years Since He Died and I Still Don't Know What to Say This was my Dad, as a younger man, in 1962. He died 13 years ago on May 25th, when he was 82, and I still don't feel comfortable with what to say. I did make sure his ashes were buried where he wanted, and six years later, when my mother died, I buried her ashes with his and placed a marker (headstone) for both of them. What can I say? My Dad was probably untreated bipolar. He had a violent temper. He was alcoholic. He had a good sense of humor. He idolized my Mom, and was jealous of time she might spend with anyone but him. When he wasn't idolizing her, he was running her down in front of anyone who would listen. That included us children. He was demanding. He was tyrannical. He could be tender. He read stories to us when we were little, and gave us "horsie-back" rides on the shag carpet in our living room, also when we were little. He had a flair for decorating, and making places look nice. He taught me to tie my shoes, and to spell "separate" correctly, and what 7 x 8 was. He taught me how to clean my fingernails well. He hated cats. He loved our Dachshund. He was a social climber. He was a racist. He was a phony. He was a fabulous cook. He had very low self-esteem, and was constantly seeking approval from me, and anyone else who would give it to him. He taught me horrible untruths about sexuality. He was so critical I hated the days when he came home from work before my Mom got home. Three times in my life, he told me not to ever darken his door again. Years would go by where he would not speak to me. It was impossible to reason with him. He told me if there was one thing he couldn't abide, it was a liar. Then later, he would ask me to lie for him to cover something he had done. I had to walk on eggshells most of the time he was around. If I went to shop for new clothes for school with my Mom, he had to go too, and sit right outside the dressing room waiting to also give his opinion on each dress or skirt. He thought nothing of criticizing me in front of other people, and would do so about my clothing, my speech, the way I smiled, the hobbies I was involved in, my weight, my first husband, etc. But you know, he was my Dad. And for many birthdays, he knew I loved roast lamb, and would cook one especially for my birthday dinner. Here I am crying now, and I still don't know what to say. Maybe if I just keep saying stuff, it will all come out right. Anyone else out there have conflicting feeling about their parents? In the mid-1890s, it was made and installed in the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, Illinois, with whose congregation Abraham Lincoln worshipped for many years. The brilliance and iridescence of the Dove Window typify Louis Comfort Tiffany's now-legendary stained glass technique, in which he duplicated glass colors produced in ancient Troy and Cyprus. The myriad of jewel-toned colors along the border of this silk almost radiate light. The Dove at each corner reflects Spirit and beauty. The First Presbyterian Church of Springfield draws visitors from around the world because of its connection with Abraham Lincoln and his family. Far beyond this relationship, however, the church has made its mark on the city's history, politics and culture. Wheatgrass & Calcium Bentonite Clay Soap - Unscented - 3 Bars - Living Clay Exfoliant Skin Care Soap For Oily Skin - Wheat Grass Face & Body Soap This soap contains two of our very favorite things... wheatgrass juice and calcium bentonite clay, both renowned for their powerful skin restorative, exfoliation, detoxification and anti-aging effects. The soaps are hand made in small batches and are cold cured, not cooked. Each bar contains fine milled calcium bentonite clay, the finest olive, palm and coconut oils, herbs, pure essential oils, and natural sea salt. Unlike most commercially produced soaps, each handmade soap bar retains its glycerin. Most commercial soap companies add less "skin friendly" chemicals to their soap. The bentonite clay in our soap bars helps to deep cleanse and exfoliate your skin, leaving it feeling smoother, cleaner, and looking more vibrant. Each bar is hand cut, and is approximately 4.5 ounces. About Bentonite: Calcium Bentonite Clay (sometimes called "Montmorillionite") were formed by volcanic activity, and are naturally rich in virtually all trace elements and minerals necessary for optimum health. Bentonite is often used in natural skin care like clay masks, lotions, baths, and soaps. Many folks also take bentonite internally for it's powerful detoxification properties and highly absorbable trace mineral content. It is also commonly used as an all natural trace mineral fertilizer. Ingredients: Olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, water, wheatgrass juice, sea salt, calcium bentonite clay. (17) Green Goddess Soap This handmade soap was created by special request for a friend of mine who suffers from seborrheic dermatitis to use as a shampoo and body bar. This shea butter soap is scented with a rosemary mint fragrance but also contains rosemary essential oil, peppermint essential oil, and tea tree oil. Specifically I recommend this soap for those suffering from dandruff and acne or for normal to oily skin. Rosemary essential oil is used often for aching muscles, arthritis, dandruff, hair care, and poor circulation. While tea tree oil is great for acne, oily skin and even athlete's foot and cold sores. It's touted as being anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Peppermint essential oil is often used for skin irritation and itchiness as well as dermatitis and acne. This handmade soap is a decorative green bar that also contains natural, cream colored soap balls of my handmade unscented goat milk soap embedded throughout. It produces a rich, luxurious lather and is made with rich, natural oils and butters as well as a special blend of essential oils for happier, healthier skin. You'll find this soap rinses cleanly away, while still leaving skin smooth and soft. Use it as a body, facial or shampoo bar. This soap is all natural except for the fragrance and color. Blue Ridge Rose Soap Scented Rose and Violet Handmade Soap made with shea and cocoa butters. This handmade cold process soap is called Blue Ridge Rose after the lovely wild roses and violets that grown in this region. The scent is very floral and feminine - a soothing medley of wild rose and sweet violet blossoms with touches of coconut, orange, and musk. If you are a fan of flowery fragrances, you're sure to appreciate the rich, spring scent of this soap. Made from a combination of olive and rice bran oils, shea butter and cocoa butters, palm and palm kernel oils, this bar is formulated especially for those with normal to dry skin. This beautiful, decorative blue and violet bar with hints of yellow offers a creamy, lotion like lather your skin will love. Natural Calendula petals are present within the top blue portion of this handmade soap for natural exfoliation to aid in sloughing off dead skin cells. The emollient properties of the soapmaking oils used will help to prevent skin from becoming dry and itchy - a problem often cause by traditional, commercial soaps. decorative bar soap Only the finest ingredients go into our creamy triple-milled soaps. each beautiful gift box contains two 4.5-ounce bars of this luxury soap that contains pure vegetable palm oil and moisturizing shea butter. from michel design works, the brand that brings you luxurious, all-natural bath and body products, delicately scented soy-wax candles, an irresistible collection of baby gifts and beautiful stationery products. beautifully packaged, to give as a gift to yourself or someone else, michel design works displays creativity and attention to detail in all their products. Approx. size is 16"w x 10"h. eco decorating It is April 1204, and Constantinople, the splendid capital of the Byzantine Empire, is being sacked and burned by the knights of the Fourth Crusade. Amid the carnage and confusion, one Baudolino saves a historian and high court official from certain death at the hands of the crusading warriors and proceeds to tell his own fantastical story. Born a simple peasant in northern Italy, Baudolino has two major gifts-a talent for learning languages and a skill in telling lies. When still a boy he meets a foreign commander in the woods, charming him with his quick wit and lively mind. The commander-who proves to be Emperor Frederick Barbarossa-adopts Baudolino and sends him to the university in Paris, where he makes a number of fearless, adventurous friends. Spurred on by myths and their own reveries, this merry band sets out in search of Prester John, a legendary priest-king said to rule over a vast kingdom in the East-a phantasmagorical land of strange creatures with eyes on their shoulders and mouths on their stomachs, of eunuchs, unicorns, and lovely maidens. With dazzling digressions, outrageous tricks, extraordinary feeling, and vicarious reflections on our postmodern age, this is Eco the storyteller at his brilliant best. The most playful of historical novelists, Umberto Eco has absorbed the real lesson of history: that there is no such thing as the absolute truth. In Baudolino, he hands his narrative to an Italian peasant who has managed, through good luck and a clever tongue, to become the adopted son of the Emperor, Frederick Barbarossa, and a minister of his court in the closing years of the 12th century. Baudolino's other gift is for spontaneous but convincing lies, and so his unfolding tale--as recounted in 1204 to a nobleman of Constantinople, while the fires of the Fourth Crusade rage around them--exemplifies the Cretan Liar's Paradox: He can't be believed. Why not, then, make his story as outrageous as possible? In the course of his picaresque tale, Baudolino manages to touch on nearly every major theme, conflict, and boondoggle of the Middle Ages: the Crusades; the troubadours; the legend of the Holy Grail; the rise of the cathedral cities; the position of Jews; the market in relics; the local rivalries that made Italy so vulnerable to outside attack; and the perennial power struggles between the pope and the emperor. With the help of alcohol and a mysterious Moorish concoction called "green honey," Baudolino and his ragtag friends engage in typical scholastic debates of the period, trying to determine the dimensions of Solomon's Temple and the location of the Earthly Paradise. And when the Emperor needs support in his claims for saintly lineage, who but Baudolino can craft the perfect letter of homage from the legendary Prester John, Holy (and wholly fictitious) Christian King of the East? A giddy and exasperating romp, Baudolino will draw you into its labyrinthine inventions and half-truths, even if you know better. --Regina Marler Similar posts: decor for table home decorating galleries table decorations for spring cupcake room decorations decorative window grates decorate wall letters french country decorative plates window decoration ideas top of cabinet decor |

How to decorate a console table : Country wall decor. How To Decorate A Console Table
Consolidated Edison Company Building Gramercy, New York City, New York, United States The Consolidated Edison Building, constructed in stages between 1910 and 1929 for the Consolidated Gas Company, predecessor to Consolidated Edison, and designed by the leading architectural firms of Henry Hardenbergh and Warren & Wetmore, is a monumental presence in the Union Square neighborhood and has one of the great towers that define the Manhattan skyline. The earliest sections of the building, on East 15th Street and the northern end of the block front on Irving Place, built in two phases between 1910 and 1914, were among the last major works of the eminent architect Henry Hardenbergh. Hardenbergh’s eighteen-story, classically-inspired facades feature giant segmental arches and double-story porticos at the base and rusticated limestone piers balanced by strong horizontal moldings at the upper stories and are enlivened by a rich blend of Classical Revival and Renaissance motifs. Hardenbergh also incorporated an early and historically-significant program of nighttime illumination in his design, which is reflected in the presence of light sockets on the spandrel panels, soffits, upper-story window embrasures, and crowning cornice of the 1910s wing. Between 1926 and 1929, Warren & Wetmore working in association with the engineering firm of Thomas E. Murray built two more additions on Irving Place and East Fourteenth Street, wrapping eighteen-story office wings, which matched the Hardenberghdesigned portions of the building, around a signature twenty-six-story corner tower. This monumental limestone-clad tower has a three-story colonnaded base and a setback tower featuring illuminated clocks, a bell chamber treated as colonnaded temple modeled on the Hellenistic Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, a bell-capped roof framed by corner obelisks, and a gigantic bronze-and-glass lantern. Characterized by the New Yorker as “a sturdy shaft, classic in detail and vigorous in silhouette,” the Consolidated Edison tower won critical praise and was among the finest of Warren & Wetmore’s late works. Dubbed the “Tower of Light” in corporate literature, the tower was intended to be both a symbol of one of the nation’s leading producers of power and light and a memorial to the company’s employees who had died in World War I and incorporates numerous devices in its decorative program such as torches and burning urns appropriate for a building associated with lighting and with funereal monuments. These dual purposes were also served by an elaborate program of nighttime illumination, inaugurated in July 1929. Although the lighting has been updated to reflect modern technology, the tower continues to be illuminated at night and remains in the words of the New York Times one of the “crowns of light [that] grace the skyline” and a symbol of Consolidated Edison, Inc. Consolidated Edison Inc. is the successor to a long line of power and light companies, beginning with New York Gas Light Company, founded 1823, which have played an integral role in the development of New York City. The Consolidated Edison and its predecessors, the Consolidated Gas Company of New York and New York Edison, have continuously been headquartered here since the building’s construction. The Consolidated Gas Company Building, 1910-14 By 1910, the Consolidated Gas Company had outgrown its old office building. The company had converted the former Lotos Club Building at 2 Irving Place and a former residence on East 15th Street for use as offices and was housing a number of its departments in nearby buildings. During this period many of the older buildings in the neighborhood were being replaced by new office buildings, including the Everett Building (1908, Starrett & Van Vleck) and the Germania Life Insurance Company Building (1910-11, D'Oench & Yost) on the north side of East 17th Street at Park Avenue South. (Both are designated New York City Landmarks.) Consolidated Gas elected to replace its building with a new twelve-story office building designed by one the country’s leading architects, Henry Hardenbergh, who, a year earlier, had renovated a five-story building at 29 East 21st Street as showrooms for the company. To minimize the disruption to its business, the company opted to build the new building in two stages leaving its original headquarters building and the Lotos Club Building on Irving Place standing while it erected the first section of its new building on a sixty- two-foot-wide lot at 124-128 East 15th Street. Work began on the first section in January 1911 and was completed by late September 1911. By the time the first section was completed and the old offices were demolished, the company had decided to relocate the offices of its affiliates and subsidiary companies, notably the fast growing New York Edison Company, to its new building. Recognizing that a larger building would be needed, additional plots were acquired to the east on Fifteenth Street to extend the building Jali console table Stunning, a real treat for the eyes, this gorgeous console table is full of character and has a classic essence to it. Mission San Xavier del Bac is a historic Spanish Catholic mission located about 10 miles south of downtown Tucson, Arizona, on the Tohono O'odham San Xavier Indian Reservation. The mission was built between 1783 and 1797. The mission is a beautifully preserved gem of the late Baroque style of New Spain. The interior is richly decorated with ornaments showing a mixture of New Spain and Native American artistic motifs. At least three different artists painted the artwork inside the church. It is considered by many to be the finest example of Spanish mission architecture in the United States. There is a series of domes and arches that create enclaves for themes of painting on the various walls, domes and rooms. During the 1990's restoration process they hired painters who worked on the restoration of the Sistine Chapel to do some of their interior repairs. Princess Room This room has a bed that swung from the rafters in the middle of the room. The walls were completely painted in chalkboard paint, and the artist decorated it with the theme of "The Princess and the Pea." interior decorating theme Interior designer David Naylor embraces the broad range of possibilities presented by a world of materials old and new, of objects both found and manufactured. He calls his approach "infusion design," by which he means capturing the ideas of the Old World without forgetting about the present, stirring melting pots of cultures and allowing opposites to coexist, and pulling together objects from around the world. The timelessness, natural warmth, and adaptability of the popular Southwestern style aesthetic provide an appealing backdrop for his interpretations, which eschew the cliches while retaining the essence. The architectural elements of the region-round beams, adobe walls, natural wood finishes-create a versatile aesthetic that can embrace an infinite variety of designs, while the nomadic nature of Americans generally, who move freely about the country bringing their favorite decor items with them, makes for limitless opportunities to infuse designs with intriguing juxtapositions and unexpected placements. Here’s what we thought. For the benefit of those that haven’t been able to visit it yet the London Indigo2 resides inside the O2 Arena. It’s a compact little venue with decor pitched somewhere between expensive strip club and a theatre straight out of Bladerunner – all neon lights, sparkly floor, metallic grills and shiny surfaces. And it’s here that we find Porcupine Tree on a mild Sunday evening in the middle of October on the last date of their 18 month Blank Planet tour. Porcupine Tree have operated for years almost entirely out of the public eye. Ask your average Joe who they are and chances are you’ll get a nonplussed rabbit in the headlights look. But they’re definitely making headway. Tree’s chief architect, Steven Wilson, has been furrowing a path just under the radar of mainstream success for a number of years but, if there’s any justice in the world, it’s only a matter of time before mainstream success finds him anyway. And if you're one of those people that are yet to experience the Tree, imagine if in 1973 Yes had managed to persuade Tony Iommi to join the band and they had all started wearing black. It’s not hard to see why King Crimson's Robert Fripp rates them so highly. They’re the heir-apparent to the heavier side of progressive rock, bringing together all of the best parts of prog and leaving out the meandering. The futuristic styling of the Indigo2 is somehow entirely appropriate for the Tree. Despite Wilson initially playing an acoustic guitar, walking around the stage in bare feet, bespectacled and with lank hair, his “protest singer” appearance belies the huge noise that his band make behind him. After hurtling through the Nil Recurring EP track ‘Normal’ and In Absentia’s ‘Drown With Me’ Wilson admits that this may not be like a normal show before playing the rarely heard ‘Stars Die.’ Another Nil Recurring track, ‘What Happens Now?’ leads onto the epic seventeen minute ‘Anaesthetize’ which is the first time that drummer Gavin Harrison really lets fly. It's worth noting here that Harrison, who is obviously of the school of “why do something simply when you can make it mind-blowingly complicated,” is a drummer of such unbelievable prowess that it’s hard to think of another drummer better than him in the world today. Fan favourites ‘Open Car’, ‘Strip The Soul’ and ‘Prodigal’ were sublime, while another live rarity, ‘Half Light’ came replete with an amazing glowing guitar. Blank Planet tracks ‘Way Out Of Here’ and ‘Sleep Together’ closed out the main set, while the encore was made up of Blank Planet’s title track and ‘Halo.’ And that was it. The Blank Planet Tour was over. Wilson says his goodbyes, and we’re told that new material and a new live DVD is on it’s way in 2009 with more live dates to follow and after such an accomplished performance it's difficult to let the band go. PT are a great band who are potentially on the brink of something huge. They’re one album away from making a real impact on the album charts, if not here then in the US or Japan. US contemporaries, including prog-metallers Dream Theater and Tool, manage huge album sales in their home country, so it’s not a massive leap to imagine PT doing the same over there. Perhaps the only fault one can draw from the Indigo2 show, and this is really, really picky, is that PT are just too good. Their playing is faultless and the Indigo2’s superior sound system (probably the best in London) is so clear that it means that they sound so remarkably close to the recorded songs that if you closed your eyes you could be listening to them at home (albeit at a very high volume and in a room with several hundred other people). But for some that may be a positive. One person in the audience was so enraptured that at one point he literally fell out of his seat and there were many, many people that probably felt like doing the same. The music was at times mesmeric, at other times thrilling and almost all of the time beautiful. If you don’t know much about the Tree then you really are missing out and should seek to rectify that post-haste. The next phase of Porcupine Tree could be an important one. They certainly won’t pander to any fashion, but you just might find that fashion finds them anyway and when that happens the world will be a much better place. Coconut oil is their main dietary oil, and is also the main ingredient in their skin care products. All of the Moisturizing Creams that Tropical Traditions offers are made with organic Virgin Coconut Oil and Virgin Palm Oil. No other products on the market are made with finer oils as their base. Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil is traditionally made from fresh organic coconuts, and independent laboratory tests show that it has a higher level of antioxidants than other coconut oils. Virgin Palm Oil contains high concentrations of a powerful form of Vitamin E called "tocotrienols" which published research has shown is 40-60 times more potent than alpha-tocopherol (the most common form of Vitamin E found as an additive in most skin care products.) In addition to these powerful Vitamin E tocotrienols, Virgin Palm Oil is also rich in natural carotenes. It is one of the richest natural plant sources of carotenes with concentrations of 500-700 ppm. It is 15 times more retinol-equivalent than carrots and 300 times more than tomatoes, for example. In addition to using only the best oils available for the skin, all other ingredients used in Tropical Traditions Moisturizing Creams are 100% natural. Our hand-made creams contain no alcohols, no artificial fragrances, and no petroleum products. Because we recognize that many have sensitivities to fragrances, we also have an unscented version. For those varieties that are scented, we only use high quality organic essential oils imported from France which are distilled with low temperature and low pressure over an extended period of time. Low temperature and lower pressure have proven to be the most effective method of obtaining all of the essential constituents from the plant, and provide our products with the very best quality fragrances available.
