Well that's the saying right? The washer that came with the house finally bit the dust. We killed the GE in 1 year 10 months. I think that with some know how it could be fixed. Right now we're just glad that we still have the Maytag we purchased...1 year, 10 months in the garage...hooked it up and it's been running since. (whispers to washer...please don't break too...PLEASE)

this was definitely one of the more entertaining photography experiences i have had... using a lamp to focus on, pressing the shutter, hopping across the room with my legs tied together, sliding the lamp out of the way and getting into position, using a self timer! and i had to do this about six times, because the tiny amount of ribbon i had meant I could only photograph small parts of my body at a time. but it was certainly amusing :)

All the appliances are hooked up and working and the sink installed. When I powered up the outlets I had the dishwasher turned on (my accident) and it started working (a good sign).

My name is Ron Goben. I live in Richmond, Maine. I was born in Bath in 1953 so you do the math. I was raised in the late 60’s and 70’s when standards are far different than they are now. Being raised in rural Maine, one was expected to be married. There was no other choice.

So I tried that route. I was married in 1972 and produced a progeny, a daughter, in 1974. I was married for 17 years, because I wanted my daughter to grow up and have a somewhat normal life. My wife knew I was gay prior to our marriage, but she thought, like so many people who don’t understand lifestyles, that I had met the right person and that she was Mrs. Right. As far as I know, there’s never a Mrs. Right (laughs). She found her way with extra-marital activities with another married man, and I found mine. It happened to be, at that time, anonymous sex in rest areas. I was fairly promiscuous until about 1984 when I realized that AIDS was here to stay and that I was just as at risk as anyone else. I got divorced in 1989 and met a wonderful man. We proceeded to court for about eight months. I moved in with him, and I’ve been with him ever since.

Like so many people, even though I had practiced what I considered safe sex since 1984, I really didn’t want to get tested. At the age of 39, I developed a muscular problem. I was an appliance repair man, lifting appliances and doing pretty butch stuff and I contributed it to old age. I put of going to the doctor for about eighteen months until I couldn’t take it anymore. I was a firm believer in if it wasn’t broke don’t fix it; I had not seen a doctor since I was 23. But I had been in the military- I was drafted at the age of 19 and went to Vietnam War. So I decided to cash in on that benefit. I went to TOGOS- a Veteran’s Administration office in Maine. I went up there not really knowing what was wrong. They tested me for everything from mono to muscular distrophy, because it was a muscular-skeletal condition. We ruled out about everything, and then he asked if I was at risk for HIV. I said “not recently,” meaning that I didn’t feel I was at risk. I had been with a partner monogamously since 1989. I had no clue, I figured HIV showed up 18 months after you were infected. I didn’t realize that it was a long-term disease.

I went back two weeks later for the results and brought my mother. Mom sat out in the waiting room and I went in to see the doctor. He called the lab for my results, and they came back positive. I was devastated. I cried, the doctor cried. You have to remember in 1993, there were about two drugs out for HIV. Not even knowing where I stood, how long I’d had the virus, I figured it was a death sentence. Basically- go home and put your affairs in order. I didn’t know of any support groups or services concerning HIV. I had known three people that had passed away from AIDS, but it wasn’t part of my life to know where they got help.

My mother knew the minute she saw my face. The doctor was very wise, and said ‘Let’s go get anti-depressants,” which is exactly what I did. I went directly on anti-depressants. Once you’re diagnosed with HIV, it’s an extreme rollercoaster. You just can’t imagine what goes through your brain, even in the middle of the night. Every little pain or ache, you think, is this the beginning of the end?

I went home and told my partner. I was petrified to tell him. He came home from work- he knew the minute he saw me. I told him he was free to do whatever he wanted, and I certainly understood. He didn’t know his status at that time either. He looked at me and said “It’s not your disease, it’s our disease.” I’ve really had a lot of support. It’s a key ingredient to longevity. He was tested and his test came back negative, and he’s still negative to this day. He gets tested about every six months.

We don’t do anything that puts him at risk, in fact we probably do the safest form of sexual entertainment that anyone can imagine. This is the level we’re comfortable at.

When I found out I was positive, I felt guilty, dirty, filthy. Was I immune to other sexually transmitted diseases? No, I had syphillis in 1986, I had a case of the clap in 1988- so I knew that I was putting myself at risk. The desire at the moment fogs reality in your brain. I don’t think that anybody that drinks or uses recreational drugs, when they’re in that heightened state of arousal, that they really think of the consequences. Just ‘the moment.’

The younger generation can’t understand can’t understand why I would get married knowing I was gay. You have to grow up in the atmosphere I grew up in, a rural farm land oriented, my father was ex-military and very staunch… that lifestyle wasn’t acceptable and I wasn’t ready to break away from my parents. Everybody tried to brainwash you at the time, and you actually

Day Nine

She was much better behaved today. She slept in (relatively speaking) for daddy (despite waking up for two hours in the middle of the night), beside him not on him this time. Totally let Daddy empty and refill the dishwasher while waiting for her morning nummies. I even got to make myself some tea and eat a chewy apple bar (my usual breakfast). We played a bit until 9:15 since I was planning on going to Granville Island today as an outing and the kids shops don't open until 10:00. Since she had her breakfast later than usual (due to her sleeping in-ed-ness) I figured that if I changed her just before leaving I didn't need the diaper bag and could just rely on the emergency kit in the bottom of the stroller. We got down to the little granville island ferry dock where I had to detach the car seat from the stroller for the ride which led me to take this picture.

Granville Island was fun as ever. We wandered around a bunch and looked at all the toys and fun stuff. I finally settled on the rattle and rabbit (see the previous photo) as well as picked up the Rockabye Baby! Smashing Pumpkins album. I also picked up some Kolbasa for dinner (we were planning on having perogies), asked a counter girl if she minded me taking a picture of her chicken feet (see the next photo) and an umbrella.

I went into the umbrella shop and was all "I want to buy a simple plain almost obnoxiously large umbrella please" and the chick was like "Come this way". She handed me an umbrella that I would define as obnoxiously large...it even had a build in wind flap! "Um I think this is actually obnoxiously large, I'm looking for the size just below this. I want it to be able to cover me, the baby and my spouse" She handed me the one below it.

Purchases in buggy I hustle-butted home. The pedometer said I walked 8km but I'm a little skeptical that the ferry's motion didn't throw it off since it's motion detection and the bobbing (I totally just wrote: Boobing) prolly make it a little crazy.

Upon returning home she napped in the stroller for like 10 minutes and woke up as the elevator got to our floor. Must be the pressure change or something. Every time she's sleeping when we get home she wakes up in the elevator as we go up (we live on the 19th floor). I tried to put her down after feeding her (and quickly wolfing down lunch) but to no avail. So I popped in Get Smart and she ended up taking an hour and a half nap on daddy. She would wake up and look around (to which I had to stifle laughter as she had my tank top lines on her face) and then fall back asleep.

She woke up about an hour before Brandi got home and that's when the crankiness started. She waited until Brandi called me and then started to freak right out. Brandi was a little late due to a long running meeting and she was super glad to see her get home. Arms out and legs kicking like crazy. Brandi shot and made me shoot some pictures as an answer to the ones I was in yesterday. They can be seen on the Baby Isobel stream if you're interested.

We also had a bubble bath tonight and she picked the dinosaur bath toys over the fishies. She went down fairly easily today. Some screaming and fussing but only for about 5 minutes or so. Just gonna choose some photos for our photo collage picture frame and then head off to bed.

Who says Chicken Enchiladas can't be good for you?! It was yummy, spicy, and filling. I served it with corn black bean salsa (which we ate as a salad).

Chicken Enchiladas

Servings: 4 • Serving Size: 2 enchiladas • Calories: 342 • Points: 6 ww pts

For the sauce:

* 2 garlic cloves, minced
* 1-2 tbsp chipotle chilis in adobo sauce
* 1-1/2 cups tomato sauce
* 1/2 tsp chipotle chili powder
* 1/2 tsp ground cumin
* 3/4 cup fat free chicken broth
* kosher salt and fresh pepper to taste

For the chicken:

* 1 tsp vegetable oil
* 8.5 oz (2 breast halves) cooked shredded chicken breast
* 1 cup diced onion
* 2 large clove garlic, minced
* 1/4 cup cilantro
* kosher salt
* 1 tsp cumin
* 1/2 tsp dried oregano
* 1 tsp chipotle chili powder
* 1/3 cup chicken broth
* 1/2 cup tomato sauce

* 8 (6-inch) reduced carb whole wheat flour tortillas
* 1 cup shredded low fat Mexican cheese
* Nonstick cooking spray

In a medium saucepan, spray oil and sauté garlic. Add chiles, chili powder, cumin, chicken broth, tomato sauce, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Set aside until ready to use.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Heat the vegetable oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté onions and garlic on low until soft, about 2 minutes. Add chicken, salt, cilantro, cumin, oregano, chili powder, tomato sauce, chicken broth, and cook 4 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

Spray a 13 by 9-inch glass baking dish with non-stick spray. Put 1/3 cup chicken mixture into each tortilla and roll it. Place on baking dish seam side down. Top with sauce and cheese. Cover with aluminum foil and bake in the oven on the middle rack for 20-25 minutes. Top with low fat sour cream or scallions if you wish. (Extra points) Makes 8 enchiladas.

This was a history of an inconvenient family truth, translated with a history of convenient family denial. This story began over 30 years ago, originating from Niantic, Connecticut. This was a twisted soap opera that spanned many decades, and is now revisited with a later, perhaps more analytically correct understanding of this history. My sister (Claudia Haneberg) and her husband (Olav Robert Haneberg), kidnapped me from a set up Boston " Lunch Date", back in the 1970's, and forced me into the back of their car, and drove me to Norwich State (Psychiatric) Hospital, in CT. I was coerced by these two conscripted vigilantes into this institution against my will, where I was drugged, against my objections, with psychotropic medications, and incarcerated.The reason given for admission to this institution by my family was an alleged inexplicable psychotic episode. The real reasons for this episode were something quite different. I was not admitted into this state hospital for being a homosexual, I was admitted for a fight I had with my family that went too far on both sides. It was no coincidence that all of this discord reached a tipping point right as I left adolescence and approached adulthood. It was their prolonged mental abuse that led up to this point, that was omitted in their understanding and explanation to the world for their intervention. More than kin and less than kind, as Shakespeare, and I would say. When I got to the age of 20 or so, I revealed to my family ceremoniously that I was a homosexual. This was a truth that they had already covertly known, understood, and tried to correct with the imposition of psychiatry since I was a small child, years before I was to become self aware of my own sexual orientation.This developmental process of self discovery is generally called "coming - out " in our culture, it is a rite of passage, a coming of age process within a long existing yet suppressed, sociological subculture. Coming out to your family and the world is a very risky and traumatic milestone in a gay person's life, for your information, especially in this circumstance. This started a long period of heated arguments, mostly over a desperate attempt by my parents to protect my father's business reputation, and his lucrative military (submarine) contracts with the Navy, and General Dynamics/ Electric Boat. The dispute escalated until it reached a crescendo, a crossroad, where my family was in a position to chose their reputation and property, or their son. The primal bond between a parent and a child is a very strong one, that can't just be casually discarded for self interest in my view of morality. For the ignorant and fearful parent, the primal bond can be corrupted with the aid of persistent denial, and a twisted rationalization for self preservation and survival. Unfortunately for me, they chose their personal self interests, and their reputation and property over their son. It is disturbing to comprehend as a child, that there are circumstances where a parent will put their selfish self interest ahead of their child, even if it is to their own child's detriment. This realization is not a pleasant, endearing, nor empowering insight to wrap yourself around with in a warm and fuzzy familial context. My father had told me as a young teenager, that if I chose to be a homosexual that I would never find a job. He owned a family business, and I was his only son. My grandfather passed his business to his son, but this father was not going to pass that same business to this son. In the late 1960's he bought me a three piece suit, and gave me a little money to stay at the YMCA in the city of my choice, to look for a job from the classified ads. The suit was not enough to get a job other than dishwasher or busboy, no matter what city YMCA I chose. My father was right when he told me that no one was going to give me a chance. I sometimes stole and pawned some of their stuff in order to survive in this odd placement away from Niantic, CT. I certainly knew it was wrong to steal from my own family, and I hated myself and them for finding myself in this predicament. I was imposed with rage and anger, and I was at a loss to find a way to deal with it. I acted out irrationally to get their attention in this emotionally charged battle. I left the city YMCA and went into their home when they were at work, and put some of their furniture out on the neighbor's lawn, desperate to make a point to them over their misguided values and materialism. The point I was trying to make was that I should have been more important as their son, than their stuff, ego, or reputation. My survival was important, at least it was to me in this odd situation. The struggle here, and the choices that were being disputed really were not about stuff or materialism, something more fundamental was at issue here but not identified. The irrational acting out was a message loud and clear, but they were not going to
