Sarcophagus: Battle between the Greeks and the Amazons @musée du Louvre

Sarcophagus: Battle between the Greeks and the Amazons @musée du Louvre

Sarcophagus: Battle between the Greeks and the Amazons

"From the second century AD, Athenian workshops competed with those of Rome in the production of monumental sarcophagi, which were often exported to other parts of Greece or across the Mediterranean. One such example is this sarcophagus, made circa AD 180 and found in Thessaloniki.
The roughly hewn lid represents the deceased couple on their funeral bed. The box portrays the legendary battle between the Greeks and the Amazons; the back is adorned with garlands and griffons.

This monumental sarcophagus was discovered in 1836 in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki. It entered the Louvre in 1884, two years after the consul M. Gillet had given it to Louis-Philippe. Despite its provenance, the box is an Attic creation from the second century AD. Athens was the third largest center for the production of sarcophagi after Rome and Asia Minor; its sculptural tradition was perpetuated by relief-decorated sarcophagi, often destined for a foreign clientele and exported across the Mediterranean or within Greece itself (as in the present case).
Production ceased during the late third century under the impact of the economic crisis, which was partly due to the Herulian invasion of Attica in AD 267.

In accordance with a practice that was also attested in Etruria, Italy, and Rome, the sculptor personalized this sarcophagus by portraying the deceased couple, half-reclining on the lid. The structure of the box resembles that of the funeral bed, supported at the corners by caryatids and terminal figures, with its thick mattress and embroidered cushions.
Several indications suggest that these portraits date from circa AD 180: the woman's hairstyle, for example, with large waves on either side of a central parting and a chignon at the nape of the neck, resembles the imperial hairstyle worn by noble Roman women during the late Nervan-Antonian dynasty (AD 96-192).
The couple's strongly chiseled features attest to the work of a local sculptor, who added these portraits to an unfinished sarcophagus imported to Northern Greece from Attica.

The battle of the Greeks and the Amazons

Attic sarcophagi were placed in edifices that were open to public view and, unlike Roman models (sculpted on three sides only), they were decorated with reliefs on all four sides. In the present case, the choice of theme was inspired by an episode from mythology: the main panel and short sides depict the battle of the Greeks and Amazons during the Trojan War. This episode was marked by the death of Queen Penthesilea in the arms of Achilles, who fell in love with her after delivering her death blow. The dense, violent composition plays on the tangle of figures, with contorted poses and effects of drapery that contrast with the nudity of the bodies. Although modified, the fighters' poses were inspired by traditional Greek sculpture. The monumentality of the figures reflects the Greek artists' taste for decoration resembling sculpture in the round, where the characters are treated like individual sculptures. On the back of the box, two griffons in low relief face each other inside garlands that hang from an eagle and from two terminal figures of Heracles."

Friendship is not based on the size of your guns, warheads, chemical weapons…it is based on mutual caring, respect, and a celebration of diversity. It is offered with truth and honesty, not with hidden agendas and meanings.

How can we, in good conscience, teach the world’s children the meaning of words like famine, apartheid, racism, genocide, ethnic cleansing, abuse, negligence, intolerance…rather than peace, love, mutual and self-respect. We owe them more than that; we brought them into the world, we must insure that it is a beautiful place where they can thrive, not someplace they can barely survive.

If the energies spent on hatred and aggression were channeled into creativity rather than destruction, we would live in an incredibly colorful and twinkling world, full of smiles rather than guns.

I embrace and respect your culture…I hope you do mine as well.

We are a world-wide human fabric made of many bits and pieces of beings and cultures…even though a bit frayed in places, we will not be torn apart, no matter where we are…but we must reweave the fabric of the world to reflect peace, love, mutual respect, and self-respect: that is the strongest fabric possible: our children deserve to be clothed in such a fabric.

Golden-crowned Sparrow

Golden-crowned Sparrow

This Golden-crowned Sparrow arrived in my neighbourhood yesterday morning a couple of hours after the White-crowned Sparrows. It is returning from a winter vacation that was anywhere from south-western B.C. to central Mexico. They are an uncommon seasonal visitor in the Yukon, mostly seen just above tree-line in alpine scrub areas where they breed. However in the early spring during migration, they are sometimes seen at feeders and low-elevation wetlands. Taken in the morning in a fair bit of shade, I used a roof to provide a background for this image. They're very shy and evasive birds in these parts, making life difficult for the photographer.

Daredevil and Real Smuck
By Michael Vance

“Daredevil” #323/$1.25, 30 pages from Marvel Comics/D. G. Chichester, words: Scott McDaniel, art/available in comic shops and newsstands.

Daredevil is hot, hot, hot. Not, not, not.

Daredevil is a superhero who received heightened senses, sonar … and blindness from a radiation accident. As the fourth handicapped hero in comic books, he’s battled crime as a lawyer, and as Daredevil since 1964. Along the way, his publishers occasionally check his temperature with fans to make sure Daredevil remains hot. When sales fall, they adjust his thermostat.

This superhero’s latest thermometer tweak is more confusing than converting Fahrenheit to Centigrade. Will a new costume and trendy art and writing turn up the heat?

Well …

Reading this comic is like trying to understand someone talking with his mouth too full. Lots of effort and words produce only a dribble of meaning. I think loads of super-groups are fighting for control of a “virus”. Any more insight is lost to density. There is just too much plot and too many characters. There are too many time and scene changes.

Looking at “Daredevil” is like musing over a painting. What is beautiful at a proper distance becomes a confusing blur of lines when you move too close. Page layouts become bewildering storytelling here when visually “reading” the art panel to panel. There’s too much sameness of color. There are too many objects in each panel battling for attention. There are too many distant scenes making character identification difficult.

There is just too much.

Daredevil’s artist and writer aren’t untalented hacks. It sometimes takes great organization to produce utter chaos. But until they learn that less is more in comic storytelling, readers will remain hot under the collar and “Daredevil” won’t be hot on the counter.

And the blind will continue to lead The Blind.

Not recommended.

MINIVIEW: “Real Smuck” #1. Juvenile obsession with nasty things. A man vomiting on its cover speaks graphically of the obscenities, violence, and fatalism inside.

This Daimler Fleetline had been new to London Transport in March 1973 as DMS1407 and was allocated to Tottenham depot. However London Transport took a long time to come to terms with its new Fleetlines and the type weren't really suited to LTs way of doing things. Large scale withdrawls commenced in the late seventies and the Purfleet dealer Ensign acted as salesman for London Transport to dispose of the buses.
Greater Manchester were looking for buses to speed up OMO in its Lancashire United subsidiary which still operated a good deal of half cab Guy Arabs. Thought was given to overhaul some former Manchester Fleetlines but as these were as old as the Arabs they were to replace this wasn't seen as cost effective.
The answer to the problems came with the large number of DMS vehicles available and ten were purchased from the Purfleet dealer in 1980, which were quickly followed by another ten. The buses had a mixture of Park Royal and MCW bodywork, this being one of the latter and were converted to single doorway by Ensign who also applied the LUT style orange and white livery : The three piece Manchester blind layout being fitted at Atherton. Unusually they had Leyland 0.680 engines, all GMT and LUT Fleetlines utilising the Gardner power unit.
327 as the former DMS1407 had become was later renumbered 2327 in the 1981 partial renumbering of former LUT vehicles is seen passing the companies head office at Howe Bridge, Atherton in Fenruary 1983 almost ten years after the bus had been new.

New York Times

New York Times

Description: Newspaper clipping from the New York Times on October 21, 1936. Headline: Mrs. Macy is Dead; Aided Miss Keller- Teacher and Famous Blind and Deaf Pupil Associated Since They Met in 1887- She Kept in Background- In Recent Years Her Sight Failed and Younger Woman Heroically Looked After Her. Article has one photograph of Mrs. Macy.

Full text: Mrs. Anne Mansfield Sullivan Macy, who for nearly fifty years, was the kindly, patient and brilliant teacher of Miss Helen Keller, noted blind and deaf woman, died yesterday at their home, 71-11 Seminole Avenue, Forest Hills, Queens. She had been suffering from a heart ailment, which became acute early this Summer. Mrs. Macy was 70 years old.

Mrs. Macy taught Miss Keller to read, speak, and know the world about her by use of her fingertips. Their lifelong devotion to each other was internationally famous and one was seldom seen or heard of without the other. Blindness, which had shadowed the child Anne Sullivan's life and which she had conquered before she met Miss Keller, had returned to darken her last days, and Miss Keller had to become the teacher and Mrs. Macy the pupil.

Miss Keller yesterday paid this tribute:

"Teacher is free at last from pain and blindness. I pray for strength to endure the silent dark until she smiles upon me again."

Miss Polly Thomson, Miss Keller's secretary, said yesterday that Miss Keller was "bearing up magnificently" under her loss. During the last week Miss Keller was almost constantly at Mrs. Macy's side. Mrs. Macy was in a coma from Thursday until she died. On Wednesday she said: "Oh, Helen and Polly, my children, I pray God will unite us in His love."

Mrs. Macy, so long the link to light for Miss Keller, lost the sight in her own right eye in 1929, due partly to a cataract, for which an operation was performed. In May, 1935, a cataract operation was done on her left eye, but thereafter she was able to distinguish only light and color with it. She could no longer read or guide her beloved Miss Keller, who despite her own handicaps, devoted herself to her friend.

Pupil Guides Teacher in Braille

As early as 1933 Miss Keller had commenced to teach Mrs. Macy to read Braille. But the Braille system had changed since Mrs. Macy taught it to Miss Keller and the teacher found it difficult.

When it became known that year that Miss Keller, who had been led [part of article missing from image] out of the black silence in which she had existed since childhood by the ingenuity, perseverance and patience of her teacher, was in tern preparing her teacher to "see" with her fingers.

Teaching Along New Paths

Teacher and pupil remained for a time at the Perkins Institution. Then, in 1894, Helen was enrolled in the Wright-Humason Oral School for the Deaf in New York. Later Miss Sullivan took her to a school in Cambridge to prepare her for Radcliffe College and finally Helen passed triumphantly her entrance examinations, entered Radcliffe and in 1904 was graduated cum laude.

Throughout the college course, Mrs. Macy was with Helen, spelling into her hands the words of the textbooks and the books of required reading. Miss Keller's career thereafter brought her more and more into the public eye. She became famous as an author, she raised huge sums for the blind, she traveled, she was everywhere acclaimed, and Mrs. Macy went everywhere with her.

'My own life," Mrs. Macy said once, 'is so interwoven with my my Helen's life that I can't separate myself from her.'

Honored by Foreign Lands

When Mrs. Macy's sixty-seventh birthday was celebrated Miss Keller proposed a toast:

"Here's to my teacher, whose birthday was the Easter morning of my life."

In 1931 Mrs. Macy received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Temple University and the Order of St. Sava from the King of Yugoslavia.

In 1932 she became an honorary fellow of the Educational Institute of Scotland. Mrs. Macy stayed in seclusion for several months in 1933 in Scotland while Miss Keller nursed her. Mrs. Macy's blindness grew even more pronounced and on her return from Scotland she said:

"Helen is and always has been thoroughly well behaved in her blindness as well as her deafness, but I'm making a futile fight of it, like a bucking bronco. It's not the big things in life that one misses through the loss of sight, but such little things as being able to read. And I have no patience, like Helen, for the Braille system, because I can't read fast enough."

Teacher

On a day nearly fifty years ago, Helen Keller, the blind and deaf child, whom Anne Sullivan had undertaken to teach, had put into her hand (literally) the key to the universe. Mrs. Macy, whom Anne Sullivan came to be, tells of the day of the miracle when Helen, with a new light in her face,

DSCF4118 What's Tough for American Kids. 1st. Outside, weather can be very harsh, some times of the year. [And what was the wisdom for spending summer without air conditioning in older America?]

+Following the spirit of that Miyazaki's talk on that interview,

It's still early July but it's already very tough for American kids to go outside. Well. It's even tought for adults.

This temp gauge is not so accurate, because it's located in most shady, and least heated space, corner of the house. But with this high, very high humidity and outside temp easily going 90 and 100s, and then inside temp without airconditioning can get easily also near 90 or above -

Basically what 'most' kids can do in this kind of harsh continental weather is 'Staying indoor'.

That's first condition, first difficult condition I can count up for American kids (and maybe much of adults, people, etc). Weather can be very harsh. Especially 'typical' heat of summer and freezing cold of winter - is very, very harsh.

+Of course that raises many other issues and questions.

1. Then why, American culture or society did not come up with ways to cope with this heat and cold and still security physical - healthy amount of - activities, interaction with nature, outside environment, outside activity and so on.

['Camping' etc is not really univerasl or general across American people. Some people can never affort it. ]

It starts from how they build houses - without any idea about which direction sun rises and stays - which direction trees should be planted and house should be facing, how inside should be partitioned and utilized etc. By so far, we never met 'smartly' built house. We always met 'ridiculously' built and modified houses - which requires many forceful measures added further to enable ventilation, shading, and air conditioning.

+So how to enquire about history of community design, town design, street design.

+Bill Clinton talked of staying at porches and so on. Then he might be able to talk about how people and kids coped with heat before air conditioning, and then how availaility of air conditioning changed - American way of life (author of circles and lines, we need to ask him too.)

+Bill Clinton's address on 'Corn Syrup' and metabolism and obesity. That's - unfortunately - surely one major factor. But first - or before that, we have issues of design and quality of interaction with 'nature' - here in America. How people found it effective or meaningful. Or people didn't find it worthful at all.

In one of the Time LIfe's old book, published in early 70s, I found one very striking photo. An old farm lady, preparing her (solo) meal - by just boiling carrots.

That was her regular meal. Article said. She just boils chopped up carrot and that's it. That's her lunch. And she basically owns and runs the entire farm.

But around her was an old wall paper - or wall paper with very old pattern - British, victorian symbols and patterns scattered across.

That picture raised many questions in my head. How - culture here - has been going on. Why buy - 'imported' patterns - copied - northern European aesthetics - and place inside of the house? - and why she only eat - or can afford to eat - or is she just fine with - boiled carrots? (is she sturdy, is she smart, or is she lazy, or is she poor?)

*I have to sort these to make use of Craigslist or Google groups. So that I can ask around and get more info in about these subjects.

+ I know kids jumping in waters and so on. But that's not universally or generally possible thing for kids across America.

Finally, i have a self portrait that i love, so much i feel quite narcissistic. :D

I was taking photos at the old vehicles, and i had most of my studio equipment along. For that matter, i always have most of it along.
I had the standard black background so i simply draped it over the back of the pickup-truck...it had these high wooden sides.

So as far as it goes, this photo is mostly sunlight. The only reason why it is not completely sunlit, the background would have become too grey from sunlight so i used the flash to focus more light on me, and underexpose the background.

And then i pushed it though Lightroom and then Photoshop. The textures i picked off some website. but as far as I can tell you, they come from my downloads folder where i store the hundreds of images i have downloaded for inspiration.

But for the record, if i had complete artistic freedom when shooting people and editing, all my photos would have this style; Dramatic and detail rich.

Strobist info: bare flash at same angle as sun. full power, snooted. Remotely fired using PT-04 triggers.

The book is filled with so many fascinating things that i have been missing out in life. It's good inspiration for things to do, or maybe just pay closer attention to.

Fale at Serenity Beaches

Fale at Serenity Beaches

This was our house for 10 days -- no walls, but wooden blinds that could be lowered (and we did because it rained); no electricity (candles); and on the left side behind the fale is a thatched wall and behind that wall is an outdoor garden shower with warm water; and also a real flush toilet and sink with running water (rain catchment pumped into a water-tower and gravity-fed to three of the five fales). Fales are pre-fabricated in Bali and are not really Tongan at all. But they are new and clean and set back just far enough from the ocean that you don't get salt spray between your teeth. Patti has cedar shake roofs on her buildings -- rather than palm thatch, which would have been more typical of Tonga.

Jewel of Persia

How can she love the king of kings without forsaking her Lord of lords?
Kasia grew up in a poor Jewish home with more siblings than luxuries. But when a chance encounter forces her to the palace of Xerxes, she becomes a concubine to the richest man in the world. She alone, of all Xerxes' wives, loves the man beneath the crown. She alone, of all his wives, holds the heart of the king of kings.
Traveling with Xerxes through Europe as he mounts a war against Greece, Kasia knows enemies surround her, but they re not the Spartans or Athenians. The threat lies with those close to the king who hate her people. She determines to put her trust in Jehovah even if it costs her her marriage.
Years of prayers are answered when Kasia's childhood friend arrives at the palace after the war, but even as she determines to see Esther crowned in place of the bloodthirsty former queen, she knows the true battle is far from over. How far will her enemies go to see her undone?
Combining the biblical account of Esther with Herodotus's Histories, Jewel of Persia is the story of a love that nearly destroys an empire . . . and the friendship that saves a nation.

Prince of Persia Impressions

Prince of Persia Impressions

Immediately after closing the book on Crackdown 2 I fired up Prince of Persia. After playing for only a little while I began to laugh at the irony that once again I was traversing a cell shaded land, bounding to and fro, and collecting orbs - though in Prince of Persia they were refereed to as Light Seeds.

While Crackdown 2 and Prince of Persia have those three traits in common, the games are as different as night and day. I found Prince of Persia to be a decent, at times inventive, ‘no-fault’ platformer which was somewhat enjoyable yet not entirely memorable.

The game did have it’s moments, such as when the platforming was at it’s best. In some instances getting from A to B consisted of a beautiful, flowing ballet of movements taking advantage of your special abilities and pushing you towards the edge of your seat. Sadly, these sequences were only fully realised a handful of times throughout the game, leaving most of the platforming feeling very standard and bland by comparison.

You won’t ever die in Prince of Persia, as each misstep in the game is followed by an immediate rescue and a prompt retry. While this safety net might be a turn off to some, I contribute it to be the main reason I stuck with this game to the very end. Had I fallen to my death one to many times I might have just shut the game off and never returned to it.

While the platforming had its ups & downs, combat on the other hand had no redeeming qualities, and was flat out atrocious. It was stiff, clunky and an absolute chore. Luckily, enemy encounters were extremely rare - but boss fights were unnecessarily painful. Not to mention that you are forced to face each boss multiple times. You still won’t die, even during a boss battle, but if you screw up during the combat your foe will regain chunks of his/her health extending some encounters into ‘stupid long’ territory. My rage quit meter started to tremble during a few of these boss encounters.

My top props to Prince of Persia go to the game’s dialog and it’s amusing, ‘story by request’ delivery. You can push through the entirety of the game catching only the major exchanges, or you can pull the left bumper (or left trigger) at whim to engage in a conversation. There is some witty back and forth between, and I was impressed with just how many lines of dialog the two characters in the game actually had. I kept pumping the trigger just to see if they would eventually repeat parts, but the conversation just kept going and I really got a feel that the characters were getting to know each other.

I dont’ think I’d prefer to see this type of delivery of story/dialog in games, but I found it unique enough here to warrant mention.

To wrap my opinion of Prince of Persia up, the game was ok - but pretty repetitive with no real hooks. The platforming has it’s moments, but the combat flat out sucks. The game is nearly devoid of enemies, with only a spattering of puzzles to mix things up. For $10 and under, you may have fun with it - but any more than that and your just wasting your money.

This was actually a collaborative effort with another student/graduate in my class at OSU. WE used our distinct styles to combine and create this.

His style was mostly in the perspective portion and mine in the cell shading style.

We chose to emulate the WWII posters of the 40's something that fit both of our styles.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

In the spirit of the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films transport you to the mystical lands of Persia for this wildly entertaining, epic action-adventure. It's a race against time when a rogue prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) reluctantly teams up with a rival princess (Gemma Arterton) to safeguard a magical dagger that gives its possessor the power to reverse time and rule the world. Filled with death-defying escapes and unexpected twists at every turn - Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time is a fun-filled adventure that will keep your pulse pounding long after the credits end.

Jake Gyllenhaal's doe eyes and bulging biceps will make some hearts flutter in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Dastan (Gyllenhaal), adopted prince of the Persian empire, must flee into the desert when accused of murdering his royal father--but a glass-handled dagger he found as loot from a captured city turns out to hold powerful time-manipulating magic. Not only is he pursued by his vengeful brothers, his scheming uncle (Ben Kingsley, Sexy Beast), and a strange cabal of assassins, but a princess/priestess named Tamina (Gemma Arterton, Quantum of Solace) wants the dagger back and will kill Dastan if she has to. Prince of Persia wants to be a rollicking adventure along the lines of Pirates of the Caribbean. Unfortunately, it's hampered by clumsy dialogue and hard-to-follow action sequences, with choppy editing that wrecks the flow of the parkour-inspired stunts. But the production design is extravagant and every time Alfred Molina (Spiderman 2) appears as a greedy sheik the movie gets a delightful jolt of energy. Gyllenhaal doesn't have much to work with--Dastan is a fairly hero--and whoever designed his hair should have been fired on the first day, but his lazy charm comes through and carries him through the movie. --Bret Fetzer

Moleskine Official Review Private Reserve ARABIAN ROSE
in a Lamy Safari .05 (not .07) Cursive Italic Custom Ground Nib - by Pendemonium

Received some inks today that I bought in the Marketplace. The came to the Northeast US all the way from Anchorage Alaska.

This is the Private Reserve Arabian Rose. I had a feeling it would look good in this pen with a cursive italic nib. There is minimal bleed through in the Moleskine. You can see minimal shading on the reverse and just a few "blood dots" as I refer to them.

Not really seeing any feathering, which is unusual in this Moleskine.

Seems to dry relatively quick. LOVE the color. It reminds me of Caran D'Ache Strom, but much more saturated and without the bleeding. I would not say that it writes as "smooth" as some of my Noodler's, but with this color, I can live with it.

Stephanie "Biffybeans"

In Apica:

Only the tiniest of "blood dots" on the reverse. Writes smoother on the Apica paper. (No big surprise) Dries just fast in Moleskine/Apica. No feathering.

In Rhodia:

Writes smoother yet. No bleed through at all. No blood spots. Takes a little longer to dry. No feathering.

My Nikon D5100

My Nikon D5100

The picture is of my Nikon D5100 with the Sigma AF 18-50mm lens mounted.
(Image taken with my iPhone 4 camera)

As a former owner of the Nikon D40 and D5000, I anticipated good results from a recent upgrade to the D5100. I purchased the D5100 body only, because I already have several lenses suited for use with Nikon DX format cameras: (Tamron 10-24mm f3.5-4.5, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5, Sigma 50-200mm f/4-5.6 DC OS HSM, and Tamron 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 Macro Zoom - all with internal motors). As I mentioned, my first DSLR was a D40. This was an excellent device for the transition into DSLR imaging navigation - I upgraded to a D5000 after becoming comfortable with DSLR hardware and software.

I found my recent upgrade to the D5100 from my D5000 well worth it. If you want to avoid spending about $800, the $600 D3100's similar feel and a slightly lower performance is the cheaper (but quality device) route to go. I happen to also own a D3100 as a back-up camera. This extra DSLR camera is a nice to have, especially when seeing a shot and being able to capture the image at a different focal perspective, without dismounting and mounting another lens. The few days I have used my D5100 has produced some quality images, The high-res articulating screen on the side is a relief from that bottom articulation screen on the D5000 – which always got in the way on a tripod.

The D5100 is a solid upgrade to the D5000, and should be on the short list of consideration for any photographer looking to purchase a DSLR with outstanding image quality, performance, low-light capability in a lightweight and a compact DSLR body design. The D5100 is considered an above novice enthusiast DSLR, meaning it shares the image sensor the high-end D7000 has, without some of the D7000 bells and whistles. The D5100 offers the same image quality as the D7000 in a less-expensive, and smaller package. While adding a few tricks, I can't see justification spending over $400 more for a D7000 - but that is just my opinion.

Compared to my lesser priced, but still excellent D3100 (14.2 megapixel sensor), the D5100 (16.2 megapixel) sensor offers improved image quality, speed, and resolution, along with a higher-resolution articulating display. For me, this is a sweet spot on Nikon's DSLR offerings. I am going to capture more low-light images soon to verify the level of detail captured by my D5100 – want to do some images at higher ISOs than I normally shoot to see the inherent noise reduction capability of the camera. I capture images in NEF (RAW) format mode (as an option there are three different JPEG compression levels also offered). And there are functions that fine-tune exposures taken, effectively improving dynamic range of images by equalizing the difference between high and low-light areas – on the fly.

Improvement in image quality compared to my D5000 wasn’t dramatic. Given the significant improvement I saw when upgrading from the Nikon D40 to the D5000, I may have had great expectations for the D5100 sensor, although i have seen subtle improvement.

By the way - I have heard much debate by Nikon D90 owners saying that purchasing a D5100 over a D90 is not a better upgrade. I have to disagree! I could write another article to compare the D90 capability to the D5100 capability, however that will have to be for another time. Suffice to say this - the D90 has been on the market since August 2008 with a 12.3 megapixel sensor, while the D51000 has been on the market since April 2011 with a 16.2 megapixel sensor. I recommend the D5100 over the outgoing D90 any day, principally because of the 16.2 MP DX-format CMOS sensor in both the D7000 and D5100. With my D5100, in effect I have a camera that is pretty much equitable to the D7000; with a better screen, and a lighter and smaller body - for around $400 less.

I look forward to comparing the quality of low-light sensitivity in my former D5000 sensor (which is shared with the D90) to my D5100 sensor. With the D5100 I have higher resolution for improved cropping, as well as 14-bit RAW image capability that offers greater dynamic range for more flexibility after the shot is taken. I have begun to readily use (and depend) upon the latest version of Nikon ViewNX 2 software that came with my D5100 for RAW image processing. I also use Corel Paintshop Pro X3 and Photomatix Pro 4 for enhancing RAW images to HDR.

Compared to my D5000, Nikon has made these improvements in the D5100:

- The body is roughly 10% smaller and 10% lighter
- 16.2 megapixel sensor (shared with D7000)
- Captures 14-bit RAW images with greater low-light sensitivity
- ISO 100-6400 expansion to 25,600 ISO (D5000 minimum was 200 and expansion to 12,300)
- High resolution (920k pixel) display for greater detail in image previews
- Side-mounted articulating display (no longer interferes with tripod like my D5000 did)
- Improved LiveView mode
- Full HD 1080p movie capture (my D5000 was AVI format 720p up to 5min)
- Significant

For those of you who asked how I did my waterdrop shots......now you know =0)

One more secret I can share is if you are using a dish like I was, that has scratches or texture that are showing up in your final shot, you can add some dark food coloring to the water until they are not visible anymore. I figured this out by using food coloring to capture a different color drop suspended in the air and after a few test shots, the scratches in the bottom of my pan were no longer visible and the drops were still coming up clear once the food coloring mixed in with the water completely.

In my bedroom, I have very sheer curtains which I handpainted with roses(shut your faces, I have to give some background!).

For the first time EVER in the 18 months we have been here, I was looking at my wall and the morning sun hit the crystal exactly right.

I almost galloped down the hall to get my camera!

I couldn't make my mind up which ones I liked so I've made a collage.

What intrigued me is that with the correct angle, even a shadow can look three dimensional.

What I especially liked is that because the curtains are sheer, the shadow of the roses came through on the wall and it was like a layering of shadows.

No flash, minimal cropping and I only intensified the contrast a little so I got more play on the shadows

Shady Grove

Shady Grove

Shady Grove, my little love,
Shady grove I say.
Shady Grove, my little love,
I'm a-bound to go away.

Cheeks as red as a blooming rose,
And eyes of the prettiest brown;
She's the darling of my heart,
The prettiest little girl in town.

I wish I had a glass of wine
And bread and meat for two;
I'd set it all on a golden plate
And give it all to you.

I wish I had me a big fine horse
And the corn to feed him on,
Little Shady Grove to stay at home
And feed him while I'm gone.

When I went to see my Shady Grove
She was a-standing in the door.
Her shoes and stockings in her hand
And her little bare feet on the floor.
