vintage hooked rug

    hooked rug
  • A rug made by pulling yarns or fabric through a mesh backing.

  • Rug hooking is both an art and a craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff woven base such as burlap, linen, or rug warp. The loops are pulled through the backing material by using a crochet-type hook mounted in a handle (usually wood) for leverage.

  • This type of rug is made by pushing loops of yarn through a canvas backing. Making a hooked rug is a relatively quick and easy process and it is an affordable alternative to an authentic knotted rug.

1948 Original Serigraph Finnish Farm Rug Design Art Chickens Leaves Wisconsin - Original Serigraph

This is an original 1948 four-color serigraph of a design from a hooked rug (owned by Robert Neal and Edgar Hellum of the Pendarvis House in Mineral Point, Wisconsin). The motif comprises roosters and plant/botanical imagery; this type of design was common of pioneer rugs originally made by Finnish women in Northern Wisconsin.
Period Paper has obtained an interesting and rare collection of serigraphs (a silk-screen process) deaccessioned from a major Wisconsin library with interesting historical design and decor motifs from the 19th century. Many of the designs of alien origin here have their counterparts in American design today. In this collection you will find a variety of implemented designs in different media portrayed N carved and painted wood, cast and wrought iron, beadwork, embroidery, needlepoint, appliqu?, quill work, pottery, rug making and even Easter egg coloring. These designs were obviously influenced by a wide variety of settlers of Wisconsin, including members of the the three largest Indian tribes. These original serigraphs would look stunning framed, and their color saturation is exceptional.
Please note that there is printing on the reverse.

Dottie's settee

Dottie's settee

I made the quilt on the seat about 15 years ago. I made the pillow out of an upholstery remnant. My grandmother (currently 100) made the striped throw about 30 years ago and the hooked rug on the back of the settee (which belonged to m dh's grandmother) about 55 years ago. The butterfly pillow was a gift when our first child (now 28) was expected. It was made from an old quilt. Lots of history in this setting!!!
