Tried out the adding of a frame in Photoshop.

1: choose a photo to frame - duplicate the layer (call layer "photo").
2: select background layer
3: go to Image - Canvas Size
4: tick box "Relative", change to pixels, and add the width for your frame, e.g. 50 pixels (note: 50 means each side will get 25 pixels width of frame).
5: choose Canvas extension color - this is the color that will come on the outside of your frame (in my case bright pink)
6: select all on background layer - and then create a new layer with this selection - call it "inside frame"
7: go to Select - Modify - Contract and choose e.g. 15 pixels (this will make your selection 15 pixels smaller on each side.
8: choose Edit - Fill and select the fill color for the middle part of the frame, in my case black.
9: go to Select - Modify - Contract and choose e.g. 3 pixels
10: Edit - Fill and select the innermost frame color, in my case white.
11: Unselect selection. Make sure your photo layer is on top of the inner frame layer.
12: optional: you can double click on the "inner frame" layer and select a blending effect like drop shadow or inner shadow (in my case chose inner shadow)

Ready!

If you want to make a standard frame for a set of photos, then record your actions and batch apply the effect to your set of photos (e.g. if you want to add a frame with the name of your holiday destination and the year for instance you could do this).

Obligatory Autumn Colors Photo, or A Lazy Photographer's Morning

This was shot this morning from my patio. Yesterday, I noticed that the Moon was setting just in that slot in between these two trees, but it was early and the trees were not lit by the rising sun. So I made sure to jump out of the bed on time today and see what I can do with the scene.

This will be the first posted shot made with my new Canon 7D. This is a JPG straight out of the camera, the only adjustments in PS3 were my logo and resizing. I rather liked the contrast and the colors and the exposure, so I didn't make any critical changes.

I'm rather happy the way it turned out. The light was just right - shots taken just minutes after this one were too bright, and the Moon is completely gone. The tighter composition with my 85mm lens didn't have the same impact, and I wanted to show the shadow of my building at the bottom of the frame, so I used my "nifty fifty", which is falling apart, but is apparently still capable of taking a sharp photo.

So, this is the ultimate in laziness - an unprocessed JPG, shot from my patio, just before breakfast. Enjoy.

So What Does a Video Time Inserter Actually Do?

And this is what my new toy does.

A video time inserter, well, inserts time in video! Duh!

Hehe. The GPS unit reads atomic time (in UTC) from GPS satellites and outputs what is called a 1PPS (one-pulse-per-second) timing signal to microsecond accuracy. The time inserter takes a video input (PAL or NTSC) and labels each incoming frame with the exact time to millisecond precision before outputting it again. It also writes out latitude and longitude at the begining of the recording.

Now I can know at what exact milliseconds of UTC time I recorded each frame of video! Woah... like, uh... a before and an after, dude!

Pretty geeky, huh?

Emile Vernon was a French artist born in the mid 19th Century. (1872-1919). Although little is recorded of his life it is known that he lived and worked in London as well as in Paris.

Kodak Enlarging Ektar f4.5 100mm

Very old Kodak Enlarging Ektar f4.5 100mm lens on Novoflex doubletrack bellows.

The lens has M40 thread mount. Had to wrap it with teflon plumbing tape to get it to fit the M42 bellows mount.

The lens is apparently single-coated, producing nicely subdued colors, yet very sharp with very well corrected chromatic aberrations. Bokeh is nicely soft and even. Its hard to say how many blades are in diaphragm - the opening appears to be perfectly circular. A masterpiece.

Had the opportunity to spend some time with my neighbor Jeff today. He's a photographer too, so we enjoyed looking at and discussing a bunch of his prints. Very cool to peruse whole series of work with an artist and talk about the images face-to-face!

Of course, what came to mind was how different that kind of at-the-diningroom-table interaction is from how we interface here - not that either one is better than the other! But it is fun to imagine walking down the block, knocking on your door, and being invited in to sit down to look at and talk about photos with you. I feel inspired to make some prints of my photos, mat and frame a few, assemble others into an album, and put another pie in the oven, so I'll be ready when you stop on by.

In this shot, Jeff's holding a very sweet portrait of his son in front of the family car, taken about 25 years ago. The license plate says "END WAR."

Note: Jeff takes many of his portraits of folks in natural light near windows. So, I used his own technique on him for this shot!

Miss Mo's Wake Up Potion!

I set out to create a layout using only scraps...I SUCCEEDED! I had A BLAST making this! I raided my scrap file and my bucket of misc. embellies and came up with this fun fun FUN.....page! I love love love it!!! I even broke out my lonely Fastenater!!! I drew my inspiration from my photo, that cute yellow polka dot pp and that crepe paper! I love looking at this!

I love all the texture here with the crepe paper, staples and buttons. I also love the tags I made from scrap pp's lying around and tucked it behind the pp I used as a photo mat! DID I TELL YOU HOW FUN THIS WAS???????????

I scrapped about my favorite morning ritual....drinking my poor man's latte....I make it with Silk Soy Milk in Extra Vanilla (the purple one) which I microwave, then add that super concentrated coffee or one of those instant coffee packets from Starbucks and viola....ALL DONE! Super fast, super cheap and super yummy! I love drinking it in my Starbucks mug!

It's an interesting line we're asked to walk - be strong and confident, and be pretty and quiet at the same time, to be pretty but not beautiful. Real people aren't beautiful, beautiful people aren't real.

I am pretty good at nodding and smiling. I'm good with stump speeches. I'm a great public speaker. And I can make an entrance! Regular conversation is probably a bit loopy. Perhaps people think it's cute with my cartoon voice. Otherwise I'm a broody silent type with steely eyes that see right through BS.

While I may not talk much, I do think that what I have to say is worth hearing, or I wouldn't be talking at all. If you wanna know what point I'm trying to make, hang on, I'll get there, and it will be wonderfully rewarding for the time. I'm funny, smart, whatever. Story telling is a family trait.

As a kid, when asked, I'd tell what I was thinking, and then get in trouble, even sent to my room for what was on my mind - which I'm sure was the deepest black mess a kid could have without putting kittens through the laundry. It's a wonder I'm normal really.

This is a photo I took almost 2 years ago of Jeremiah and a youing girl named Hope that really wanted to be part of his life. I've been playing for years with Actions that don't work and tutorials that are blah, trying to do decent cartoons. This one came out pretty good and I'll tell you how I did it.
Start with a bright colorful photo. This is all done with Artistic Filters. Start by going to Filters, Artistic and the Poster Edges. Start by setting the Thickness to 8, the Intensity to 8, and the Posterization to 5. If this doesn't look right adjust them a bit. A lot depends on the brightness and color of your photo, and the size. I used 72 Dots per inch on this one.
After this I went to Sponge, then to Smudge stick. Try these and just play with the numbers until it looks right to you. If it doesn't, after poster edges try Dry Brushes, Cut Out, or Fresco. One of these is exactly what you are looking for. If you don't like what an effect is giving you just cancel it and try another one.
It's hard to come up with a hard and fast tutorial for this effect, there are so many variables. I guarantee you though if you try this, you can make it work for you.

The story begins with a newlywed couple who are deeply in love. Jason and Chloe have been together for just under a month now and are extremely happy. The two are full of overwhelming emotion for one another, as we can see here in the desaturated photo. The removal of color in this photo removes the blunt impact of high energy colors, in a quaint, introspective scene. The black and white photo causes the viewer to focus on the inner emotions felt by the characters, rather than the the external images themselves.

Another test shot from the HTC Touch Diamond camera. The camera module has an issue with spot-macro focusing with disturbing background and bright daylight. Holding up your palm behind the subject during focusing will help a lot. Nice bokeh, eh? :) Uploaded directly from the mobile with Resco Photo Viewer (great application!) Strangely enough it seems like FlickR doesn't recognize the EXIF header, nor the GPS-position saved within... gonna have a look that.

United Colours of Hastings photo challenge - flowers

Taken last year when the free music concert was taking place on the beach. Some may say a controversial entrance for this months challenge …I await the backlash!

Also does Hastings have the highest concentration of tattooed ladies in the UK? My very small local corner shop stocks six different tattoo magazines alone. For the record my wife has three of them - tattoo's that is not subscription to the magazines : )

some shots from a village full of chaarans...little apprehensive the adult ones for their tattoos to be clicked, managed some kids however. chaarans were the ones who used to lift the spirit of king and his troops during the war times by their vocal expertise
