Tokina AF353 35-300mm

Tokina AF353 35-300mm

Extraordinary wide angle to long telephoto zoom for Pentax 35mm and Digital SLR cameras (see below), with auto or manual focusing

* Quality Tokina AF lens
* Long 35-300mm zoom
* Multicoated SD glass
* Auto or manual focusing
* Automatic diaphragm
* Full aperture metering
* All exposure modes OK
* For Pentax AF 35mm
* For Pentax Digital SLR
* For Samsung GX DSLR
* Fits Pentax K, M, PK, KA
* Solid, metal construction

Tokina is one of the top Japanese independent lens manufacturers, and this is a very long range zoom lens for Pentax bayonet mount 35mm and Digital SLR cameras, and the related Samsung GX models. It has SD, multicoated glass, auto or manual focusing, and is in excellent condition, boxed and complete with instructions and lens caps.

It covers an incredible range of focal lengths from 35mm wide angle, though 50mm standard, 85mm portrait, 135mm short tele all the way up to 200mm and 300mm telephoto, plus of course all the focal lengths in between. It's a great range for sports, candids, wildlife, landscapes, travelling and many other subjects. The zoom ring has a lock to hold the lens at the 35mm setting when it's being carried.

Used on Pentax and Samsung Digital SLR cameras you get even longer effective focal lengths, equivalent to 52.5-450mm! The SR (Shake Reduction) feature works on the K10D, K100D and GX-10 to reduce camera shake at slow shutter speeds.

Auto or manual focusing to 2.5m at all focal lengths. Distances are clearly marked in feet and meters, with infrared indexes. The manual focusing ring works quickly (with a rotation of only around 90 degrees) and like the zoom ring has a ridged rubber grip for easy handling. The focusing ring turns the "correct" way for Pentax cameras - anti-clockwise from infinity to close up.

Auto diaphragm and full aperture metering, compatible with all exposure and metering modes (see below). Maximum aperture is f/4.5-6.7, and the lens stops down to a very small f/32-45 for maximum depth of field. As the lens has an aperture ring, it's fully compatible with older and newer AF cameras, as well as manual focus PK and KA models. Half stops are provided down to f/22, and the A (Auto) setting has a lock for program and shutter priority auto modes.

Tokina SD (Super low-Dispersion) optical design, for reduced aberrations and improved picture quality. Multicoated (MC) glass for improved contrast and reduced flare against the light. Standard 72mm filter thread, plus external bayonet fitting for Tokina lens hood (not included), though a screw in hood can also be used. Optical construction is 17 elements in 14 groups.

This lens is beautifully made (in Japan), with a solid, metal barrel and lens mount, clear markings and a very high standard of fit and finish. It's quite compact for a 300mm zoom at only 115mm (4.25 inches) long at its smallest settings on the camera, and weighs a reassuring 675g. Tokina model number AF353.

Converted to black and white in PS2 using channel mixer and curves/levels.
First impressions seem favourable although high ISO results in some chroma noise which can be seen in the original colour version. This can be removed with software but I usually add some grain for film effect anyway.

Indian Made Atomic Coffee Machine- Jug Handle Detail

Indian Made Atomic Coffee Machine- Jug Handle Detail

This part is crudely made on Indian atomic machines: it is cast off of an original part and is therfore thicker and poorly formed.

Around 2006 brand new atomics started appearing on the market. Though they didn't exactly look brand new... For many years prior to this the only source of Atomic coffee makers was second hand markets and auction houses. Lucky individuals found one in the attic or at a church sale, but most people had to bid high, and pay through the nose.

However all was not as it seemed with these new machines. Although they were labeled as being Bon Trading (australia) imports of Italian made Atomics- they were very poorly made with a rough, hand finished appearance. Many of them did not work very well, and they were 'not quite right'...

It was soon discovered that these machine were made in India and falsely labeled as being made in 'Italy'. The prices of these dodgy machines dropped rapidly and then they disappeared from the market altogether. Today it is hard to find one of these Indian made Atomics and they are collectible in their own right.

For the collector interested in purchasing an Atomic it is a simple matter to identify one of these fakes. The most prominent difference between these machine and earlier Italian made Atomics is the boiler plug. On the Indian machine this plug sticks out in an ugly fashion. Other obvious differences can be seen in the bakelite parts. These parts are much thicker and are poorly formed compared to vintage Italian machines. The filter basket is distinctive: the holes in it appear to be randomly punched with a nail or similar implement by hand.

These machine are not too bad as a hand finished attempt to replicate the atomic form. It is by no means an easy (or cheap) process. Sand casting the body is an art in itself. It is clear this atomic was reverse engineered from an Italian made Atomic- probably a model dating from the 70's. They copied every detail right down to the label.

The example pictured here works and was actually used to make coffee by its original owners for over 4 years. When they purchased it they were told it 'was made in Italy'. When they complained of the poor quality they were sent another one...

However the machine was marketed deceptively, and we would not recommenced using one to actually to make coffee: they are poorly made from inferior materials. There are rumors the alloy was recycled from old car parts...

this example is in the Ikon Exports collection.

Our coffee system

Our coffee system

If you saw this coffee machine, could you, without instruction, figure out how to make a pot of coffee with it? I am not looking for "no, I use a French press, no00b," coffee snob answers, I want to know if you could figure this system out without help.
To the left of this picture are a can of Folger's ground coffee, and a water cooler.

Because I think the concept is simple. And I have been told by many in my office they "can't figure out how to make coffee," and while I am a systems admin, I believe I could teach a child of five to do this by only showing them once.

I think they don't WANT to know how, and have someone make it for them.

Lazy bastards.

Home sweet home. McCall Basin. Next to the N.F. Tieton River. During the day you have to stay away from the evergreens surrounding my tent. The mosquitoes work in squadrons and the moment you get near, you get swarmed. I was glad to see bats at night in the basin. They eat more insects than birds do, and I was hoping they were "filling up" on my mosquito buddies.

Friday August 15th, 2008 I packed my packpack and drove to the Scatter Creek trailhead up the North Fork of the Tieton River (the road is about 8 miles on the east side of White Pass in Washington State).

I began my backpack at 2:15 pm, late in the day for me, but I wanted to take advantage of the small window of good weather to visit the Goat Rocks Wilderness.

Four and quarter miles up trail 1118 I intersected the Pacfic Crest Trail (still called trail 2000 by many). The junction of 1118 and the PCT is called Tieton Pass.

From Tieton Pass I headed south on the PCT to the half mile long dead end trail that leads down into McCall Basin.

I visited a nice couple with three beautiful pack horses and a dog, who were camped in the basin, then set up my new Northface tadpole 23 backpacking tent for one. It turned out to be a great little tent.

I camped within sight and ear shot of the North Fork of the Tieton River about 1/4 mile downstreams from a waterfalls.

That evening I took my Canon G9 and hiked a mile up to the upper McCall Basin (which is lovely). I hiked the length of the meadow and then to the top of the waterfalls that enters the basin. Great scenery. Flowers, deer, and snow fields everywhere.

Saturday August 16th, I left camp with a light day pack at 7:15 am. A fellow solo backpacker (from Gig Harbor) camped near me at McCall Basin joined me on the day hike.

We hiked through aromatic fields of lupine to Elk Pass, roughly 3.5 miles from our campsites in McCall Basin.

We spotted a big billy goat near Elk Pass and kept our cameras going constantly with the far off vistas and the wildflowers, marmots, meadows, snow fields, boulder fields, and everything else that caught our attention along the trail.

At Elk Pass we met a couple from St. Louis who were doing the "whole thing" - - that is the Pacfic Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. At times they put in 30 mile days. They were in great shape and obviously knew what they were doing.

From Elk Pass we hike over a mile toward Old Snowy Mt. where we could look down on the last saddle before the Old Snowy Mt. traverse of the PCT (two routes possible).

A herd of mountain goat were below us. Most were hard to photograph since they were on the snow and a long way off. A nannie and kid grazing in a lupine covered meadow offered us the opportunity to get a good "goat" photo in the "goat rocks".

The waypoint for the end of our day hike is (approximately): N46 31 25 W121 27 14 at just under 7,000 feet.
This position was exactly one mile by the lower PCT crossing of Old Snowy Mt. from the position I day hiked up to on the last day of July in 2008 (from Chambers Lake) and I could easily see where I had stood just a couple of weeks ago across the way.

We returned to McCall Basin camp to find it hot and the mosquitoes intolerable (for me). I broke camp, shouldered my backpack and by 3:45 pm was making my way back to my truck at the Scatter Creek trailhead.

I reached the truck at a little before 7:00 pm, happy for the wonderful country I had visited once again, and very happy to be out of the mosquitoes.

I had hike 9 miles with a day pack and another 6 miles with my backpack, which was plenty for me for the day. I couldn't imagine the St. Louis couple who were putting 25-30 miles a day in, with full packs.

THE SAG HARBOR EXPRESS October 11, 2007

Morpurgo House Sold for $1.46 Million

By Bryan Boyhan

The third act in the street theater that has been the sale of the Morpurgo house in Sag Harbor played out on Friday, and has thus far been the far more exciting - and mysterious.

The historic - but dilapidated - home was sold at auction to a man identified only as Brandon, on behalf of a woman whose name has not been revealed, for a purpose that is not fully known.

The winning bid, $1,460,000, nearly reached the starting bid price of $1,500,000 set two years ago for the first auction attempt. That auction, also played out on the front steps of the Municipal Building as was Friday's, resulted in no bids, but an audience of bemused onlookers. A second auction attempt last year, with a starting bid of $1,100,000, had the same result.

What was different this time, apparently, was a lower starting bid - $900,000 - and court decisions that cleared the way for an unencumbered sale. The house is owned by two sisters feuding over the sale of the house. Helga Morpurgo has sued her sister Annselm to liquidate the house and divide the proceeds. Annselm had instead held out for a sale of the property, most recently listing it for $4,500,000. (Other listings had it as high as $100,000,000, and over the years she had offered several partnership opportunities to develop the property into, among other things, luxury condominiums, artists space, and a corporate retreat). She had repeatedly attempted to throw up road blocks for the auction, and on Friday, as the crowds were filtering away, predicted the sale would again be challenged.

"I'm not happy at all. It's a steal," she said. "It will probably be reversed in a court decision."

On Wednesday, conceding she is already looking for a new place to live, said she had filed an objection to the sale and claimed officials will "have to carry us out."

Further clearing the way for the sale, however, was a magistrate's recommendation last week that no restraining order be placed on the auction.

The action started quickly on Friday, with the auctioneer, attorney Stephen Grossman, stepping out onto the Municipal Building steps declaring "It's show time!"

About 80 people stood on the sidewalk, clutching their sweaters and jackets around them against a brisk breeze coming down Main Street.

Claudette Romano opened the bidding and the man named Brandon quickly followed. Romano said after the auction that she owned a furniture store in Bridgehampton, The Mill, and had hoped to convert the Morpurgo house into a home for herself.

Bidding moved rapidly, in $10,000 increments, and it quickly became clear the battle would be between Romano and Brandon. Real estate broker Simon Harrison said he had a certified check and was prepared to bid up to $1.1 million but said, "They went right past me."

Indeed, Andrew Towner, attorney for Helga Morpurgo, said he noted several people in the crowd he said had come prepared to bid ("You can tell the people holding envelopes with checks in them").

By the time the bidding had reached $1.2 million, Brandon appeared bored by the repetition and Romano simply looked down and raised her hand slightly when it was her turn to up the price.

Finally, the wind tousling her red hair, she declined to respond to Brandon's final $1,460,000 offer. After the auction Romano glanced over at Brandon and shook her head predicting, "He was going to two million."

The new owner of the house is, apparently, a blond woman who stood behind Brandon during the bidding, and leaned over to kiss him on the cheek when the bidding stopped. They were seen later celebrating on the front porch of the American Hotel, and later still standing together in front of the Morpurgo house; she reportedly telling him, something to the effect of "I can't believe we bought this house," according to Debbie Lou Houdek, who had stopped to congratulate them.

According to Cold Spring Harbor attorney Dustin J. Dente, who represents the winning bidder, the woman plans to do a "loving restoration" of the building.

"It's an important building," he said, "and it adds character to the neighborhood."

While Dente was unsure how the building will ultimately be used, he said he didn't believe it would be used as a private home.

"It wouldn't be used beyond it's original intent," he added, noting its historic use as a multi-family house.

The certificate of occupancy for the building shows that it has eight apartments, although Sag Harbor building inspector Al Daniels notes that it has not been used to that capacity for well beyond the three year statute that determines whether the multi-family use can remain with the building, which is in a single-family, residential area.

Helga Morpurgo didn't take the opportunity to stay for the auction. After two disappointments, she was too nervous to

This is Vonderheide's Batesville Mineral Water Works located in Batesville, Indiana. Many women surely swooned in Batesville when their prospective beau's took them to Vonderheide's for a healthy shot of "mineral water". Picture: just Bokeh
Location: Water Park, Olympic Stadium, Beijing.

Bokeh
In photography, bokeh (Originally /?bo?k?/,[1] /?bo?ke?/ boh-kay, and also sometimes heard as /?bo?k?/ boh-k?,[2] Japanese: [boke]) is the blur,[3][4] or the aesthetic quality of the blur,[5][6][7] in out-of-focus areas of an image, or "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light."[8] Differences in lens aberrations and aperture shape cause some lens designs to blur the image in a way that is pleasing to the eye, while others produce blurring that is unpleasant or distracting—"good" and "bad" bokeh, respectively.[3] Bokeh occurs for parts of the scene that lie outside the depth of field. Photographers sometimes deliberately use a shallow focus technique to create images with prominent out-of-focus regions.
Bokeh is often most visible around small background highlights, such as specular reflections and light sources, which is why it is often associated with such areas.[3] However, bokeh is not limited to highlights; blur occurs in all out-of-focus regions of the image.

Origin

The term comes from the Japanese word boke (?? or ??), which means "blur" or "haze", or boke-aji (???), the "blur quality". The Japanese term boke is also used in the sense of a mental haze or senility.[9] The term bokashi (???) is related, meaning intentional blurring or gradation.
The English spelling bokeh was popularized in 1997 in Photo Techniques magazine, when Mike Johnston, the editor at the time, commissioned three papers on the topic for the March/April 1997 issue; he altered the spelling to suggest the correct pronunciation to English speakers, saying "it is properly pronounced with bo as in bone and ke as in Kenneth, with equal stress on either syllable".[4] The spellings bokeh and boke have both been in use at least since 1996, when Merklinger had suggested "or Bokeh if you prefer."[10] The term bokeh has appeared in photography books at least since 1998.[5] It is sometimes pronounced /?bo?k?/ (boke-uh).[2]

Description

Although difficult to quantify, some lenses enhance overall image quality by producing more subjectively pleasing out-of-focus areas. Good bokeh is especially important for large-aperture lenses, macro lenses, and long telephoto lenses because they are typically used with a shallow depth of field. Bokeh is also important for medium telephoto "portrait lenses" (typically 85–150 mm on 35 mm format) because in portraiture photography, the photographer typically seeks to obtain a shallow depth of field to achieve an out-of-focus background and make the subject stand out.
Bokeh characteristics may be quantified by examining the image's circle of confusion. In out-of-focus areas, each point of light becomes an image of the aperture, generally a more or less round disc. Depending how a lens is corrected for spherical aberration, the disc may be uniformly illuminated, brighter near the edge, or brighter near the center. Lenses that are poorly corrected for spherical aberration will show one kind of disc for out-of-focus points in front of the plane of focus, and a different kind for points behind. This may actually be desirable, as blur circles that are dimmer near the edges produce less-defined shapes which blend smoothly with the surrounding image. Lens manufacturers including Nikon, Minolta, and Sony make lenses designed with specific controls to change the rendering of the out-of-focus areas. The shape of the aperture has an influence on the subjective quality of bokeh as well. For conventional lens designs (with bladed apertures), when a lens is stopped down smaller than its maximum aperture size (minimum f-number), out-of-focus points are blurred into the polygonal shape formed by the aperture blades. This is most apparent when a lens produces hard-edged bokeh. For this reason, some lenses have many aperture blades and/or blades with curved edges to make the aperture more closely approximate a circle rather than a polygon. Minolta has been on the forefront of promoting and introducing lenses with near-ideal circular apertures since 1987, but, since bokeh has become a recognized property of lenses, most other manufacturers now offer lenses with shape-optimized diaphragms, at least for the domain of portraiture photography. In contrast, a catadioptric telephoto lens renders bokehs resembling doughnuts, because its secondary mirror blocks the central part of the aperture opening. Recently, photographers have exploited the shape of the bokeh by creating a simple mask out of card with shapes such as hearts or stars, that the photographer wishes the bokeh to be, and placing it over the lens.[11]
Leica lenses, especially vintage ones, are often claimed to excel in bokeh quality[citation needed], although Leica photographers have tended to make more use of maximum aperture due to the lenses' ability to maintain good sharpness at wide openin

Lens Adaptor Tube Prototype #1

Lens Adaptor Tube Prototype #1

This is a lens adaptor tube I've recently designed and built. Its purpose is to allow filters, hoods and add-on lenses to be mounted on certain camera models that don't have threads or adaptors provided for them, by the manufacturers. The three models are the Canon SX1 and SX10 and the Sony HX1. The Canon cameras have a bayonet mount for hoods, but it doesn't allow filters or lenses to be attached. Lensmate sells an adaptor for filters and lens caps that fits the SX1 and SX10, but it can't be used for add-on telextenders that would put strain on the camera's extending lens. Raynox makes a macro lens and an adaptor that fits these cameras, by clipping into the inside of the lens barrel.

The Sony HX1 camera has mounting threads at its lens base for a telextender Sony sells, that has a built-in extended tube at its inside end. This telextender doesn't need an adaptor tube, but other add-on lenses that Sony sold for earlier models, need an adaptor to fit on the HX1. The adaptor for previous models is not long enough to work on its larger lens, unless an extension ring could be found of the right size for it. I don't know if the earlier adaptor, that fit the H-50 camera and other models, has any difference in the contours at its base, that would prevent it from being mounted on the HX1, if an extension ring were used on it. The Pemaraal Co. may make an adaptor tube for the HX1 later, but this is not certain at this time.

This adaptor was built from two ABS plastic tubes of different diameters, that were fused, one inside the other, with urethane glue (Gorilla or Ultimate Glue).. A 67mm to 58mm step-down ring is mounted in the end, with J-B Weld epoxy putty. The adaptor slides over the outer base of the camera's lens. There are three stretched wraps of thick, self-bonding rubber tape, stretched around the base. This provides a firm, but cushioned attachment. This is the type of tape often used by electricians for outdoor or waterproof connections and has a paper layer between the wraps on the roll. There are cut-outs in the base of the tube, to provide clearance for control buttons and knobs and for the microphone openings.

The adaptor must have the outer ring mounted so that there's about 2mm of clearance
between it and the fully extended lens. The lens comes out when the camera is turned on, but doesn't extend all the way, except at full zoom.

It's important that all the parts are shaped and assembled straight in line. One way to check for alignment, is to mount a telextender on the adaptor and back off on the zoom, until vignetting occurs. Then, you can see how well-centered the image circle is in the frame.

The camera shown here, is a Canon S5 IS. This model doesn't need this type of adaptor, as there are commercially-available adaptors that have a bayonet-mount that attaches to the lens base. But, I bult this one for the S5, to demonstrate how it could be done for the models that need it. The base rings on some models are not solidly attached, but just stuck on with some small pieces of double-sided tape. On the S5, this ring has "Image Stabilized" and "12X" decals on it. I had to pull it off the S5 and re-fit it with some shoe-goo (also known as "goop"), for a solid, but removable (I hope) attachment. The dimensions of this adaptor for the S5 are: 67mm in length, 61mm in inside diameter at the base, which is 2mm larger than the lens base and 69mm in inside diameter at the outer end, which flares out where the ring is positioned. The wall thickness of the adaptor is 4mm. There's three more pictures of it, that follow this one.

WIFI coming to BC Ferries !

WIFI coming to BC Ferries !

One crew member said (on Dec 27/2009) they are working on it and it might be available by the Olympics.

This was in the Seawest Lounge on the Spirit of BC. I also noticed them outside the lounge on deck 6.

Talked to BC Ferries today (April 30/2010) and they informed me that they are still working on it with Telus re: connectivity issues They want the service to be 90% reliable before they implement it. Their latest estimate is end of June 2010.

Update from June 17/2010:

Victoria, B.C. - Ferry passengers will soon be able to surf the Internet while skimming the waters of Active Pass.

B.C. Ferries says it will launch wireless Internet service on some of its ships next month to provide free web access for those who suffer Internet withdrawal during the 95-minute voyage from Victoria to the mainland.

“We’ll be piloting it on the Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay run as well as at those two terminals,” said Deborah Marshall, B.C. Ferries spokesperson. “If it is successful, we will expand it to the two other mainland Vancouver Island routes and the associated terminals” in Nanaimo, Duke Point and Horseshoe Bay, said Marshall.

The ferry corporation is keeping mum on some details — such as what kind of technology has been selected to provide the service — until an official announcement next month.

It has taken ferries staff around two years to get the idea from the drawing board to reality because of the difficulty maintaining a steady data connection to a moving ship, said Marshall.

Parts of the route are also a challenge for cellphone reception.

While the service will be free, passengers will not be allowed to access streaming audio or video on the ferry WiFi network in order to save bandwidth, said Marshall. “We don’t really know how many customers will tap into it,” she said. “We imagine it will be quite popular.”

There will also be filters to block access to inappropriate sites, said Marshall.

September Food For Thought.

September Food For Thought.

Today was a good day, and I can't believe that it's September, already! Time really does fly, jeeze!

Anyway, my main focus for this month is to ease myself in to transition. By this, I mean to find new ways to challenge myself physically, mentally, and socially (hehehe, PMS *giggles*) for ways to better myself and overall health. I believe my Flickr page is my only site out of my social network and the like that I have not mentioned my transition.

I am currently transitioning my life in such a way that I'm not critical of myself to the point of incredible tension and unnecessary stress, and to be more open and friendly towards others, and to be a good friend, as well as an overall good person and become more well-rounded. Ever since my trip to Cali, something, not sure what, definitely changed and has motivated me to do so. Because after seeing all there is to see (in the very small section I was in), I want to accomplish some pretty big things in terms of hiking and rock climbing and diving. So, each month, I'll be putting together a list of goals, probably between 5 and 10 of them.

I also am trying to enhance communication and leadership skills. As a future educator and/or journalist, I have to be competitive, but show it in a humble and professional way. Also, to better improve how I interact, talk, and communicate with other people. These goals for September are:

- Get MINIMUM 8 - 9 hours of sleep EACH night. No excuses. (Well, except another 4AM fire drill).
I mention this one because like any multitasker insomniac with an anxiety issue, sleep doesn't come too easily. I believe this will definitely help ease my mood, as well as put me in a relaxing place and a stress-free and worry-free zone for a while. It can only be good, right?

- Drink 64oz of water MINUMUM each day.
I have a real problem with dehydration, so I'm upping my water intake and putting my Brita filter to the works. I took a trip to Dick's Sporting Goods for some nifty things, including two sporty 32oz Nalgene 'Everyday' water bottles. They're the only good ones I've seen that are plastic and not steel.

- Find Part Time Work.
This one I've been going at since I got here. But, I'll spill it over in to this month. I'm a poor college student with a LOT of ambitions and desires to challenge myself. But, that requires money! After my textbook bill, unless I get a job, I won't be doing much of anything any time soon.

- Volunteer.
I'm actually still in progress on this one. One reason is because it's a requirement for the Honors program and even more so for those that sit in the Honors Council, such as myself. But, also to enhance my leadership skills and to improve communication skills. I have also joined Extreme E.L.I.T.E, which is the 'extreme sports' group on campus, but is widely known for enhancing leadership skills and building teams. I will be volunteering on Friday afternoons at Dimple's Care Center to be with and aid children with abuse and disabilities. I also have a few positions to choose from at the Florida Aquarium. We'll see how it goes!

- Exercise MINIMUM Five Days a Week.
Lately I've been waking up around 6:00 or 6:30AM naturally. I poked in the gym a few times and found it to be quite vacant, so, I'm just going to make that my new morning place.

- Play BACH.
*hisssss* I haaaaate Bach. But mostly because I'm a bit biased on Baroque Music in general. So, in order to 'broaden my horizons', so to speak, I will be playing Bach's flute Suites as well as Sonatas for a student recital mid-semester. Don't worry, my junior recital is next semester!

That's all I have for now.

But, I've made it midweek of my first week at UT, and my schedule isssss *drum rolls*
8:30 - 9:40 - Sociology and Social Problems.
10:00 - 10:45 - Theory V.
10:51 - 11:20 - Brass Techniques.
2:30 - 3:45 - Spartan Band.
4:00 - 4:50 - Student Recitals / Guest Symposia.

Day Three.

Our day, once again, started with Starbucks. Tommy got a coffee and I got my new favorite iced tea (Venti one pump raspberry sweetened iced black tea). We headed down to Pike Place in search of something to eat and ended up at Beechers. We got amazing grilled cheeses there. Beechers makes their own cheese and I don't even know how to explain it. It was yummy and creamy and just amazing.

We made our way down by the aquarium and decided to do the bay cruise first. The cruise was awesome. It was about an hour, but we learned a ton about Seattle and got to see California Sea Lions just hanging out.

After, we did some shopping at one of the shops and went to the aquarium. The aquarium was so cool. It was all salt water and none of the saltwater was "man made". There is a constant cycle of bay water being brought in, filtered, put into the tanks, filtered and put back into the bay. We saw all the fish, the Pacific Octopus (which is the world's largest octopus and now featured on the new Bing commercial), sea otters & lions and seals. It was so much fun.

After the aquarium, we went to The Crab Pot for lunch, which was yummy. We went back to the hotel and I don't remember the rest of the day. I think we just hung out around the hotel and didn't bother with dinner and just snacked on what we had in the room.

14/52 - Heavy Skies

Just after getting my welding glass "ND" filter, I was looking for all the opportunities I could to get out and play with it. In one week I visited 4 different towns/cities looking for possible long exposure shots. This one is from Portsmouth, where these light rays were beaming down the entire time I was shooting (a few hours). This shot's almost an "aside"; I was taking a long exposure in the other direction, and while I was waiting I pulled out my phone to take a picture of this scene because I liked the outcrop and the tower on it, and the clouds had got really heavy and dramatic-looking. I figured that if it could look as good as it did on my phone, it was worth shooting properly, although I have to say there's very little difference (aside from resolution and image quality!) between the two. Needless to say, this one's the one from my SLR, although I did consider putting the phone one up as well ;-)

The shot:
- Canon EOS 400D/Digital Rebel XTi
- Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro @ 17mm
- 1/50th @ f/8, ISO100, Aperture Priority with +1/3EV exposure compensation
- Cokin P-series GND4 hard, P121M
- Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod with 322RC2 joystick grip ball head

Processing:
- Minor exposure adjustment in Adobe Camera Raw
- Noise reduction with Noiseware Professional plug-in
- Distortion and perspective correction with the Lens Distortion filter
- Selective Curves and a global Levels and Curves layer
- Curves layers with blend modes for dodging and burning
- Local contrast boost with a High Pass layer
- Converted to B&W with a Gradient Map layer in Colour mode
- Added a slight vignette with a Multiply layer
- Resized and sharpened with USM

Edit: just added this to the map but can't remember exactly where it was shot from, so it's a bit of a guess and most likely a bit wrong!

Evolution Technology: Grind More, Hear Less
For nearly eight decades, InSinkErator® has built more than 100 million food waste disposers. Now the company has put everything it has learned into a line of disposers that sets dramatic new standards for performance. Evolution Series® disposers feature innovative technologies--MultiGrind® and SoundSeal®--that address users' two most common requests: improved grinding ability and reduced noise.

Liquify Waste with MultiGrind™ Technology

The Evolution Septic Assist® food waste disposer is constructed with a stainless steel Quick Lock® sink mount for easy installation. All InSinkErator® food waste disposers are built with this feature, making replacement of older units a breeze--simply disconnect and replace your old disposer using the same sink mount.

, Wallet-Friendly Choice
The Evolution Septic Assist® food waste disposer is a practical and environmentally responsible way to help reduce the 31 million tons of solid waste generated from food scraps in the U.S. each year.
Instead of throwing this food waste away, grinding it with the Evolution Septic Assist® sends it to your local municipal wastewater treatment plant, where it can be recycled to produce methane, a renewable source of power for the plant. Additionally, wastewater treatment plants can process food waste into biosolids to be used as fertilizer (check the plant in your area).
Food waste disposers average less than 50 cents a year in electricity to operate and account for less than one percent of ahousehold's total water consumption. In fact, the Evolution Septic Assist® features an average water usage of one gallon per person per day and an average electrical usage of three to four kilowatt hours per year, making it among the least expensive installed kitchen appliances.

We Come To You® Parts and Labor Warranty
The Evolution Septic Assist® is backed by an exclusive four-year We Come to You® In-Home Service Warranty. This warranty from InSinkErator® includes free house calls (including parts and labor) for the entire warranty period.

Sacred Mtn. Sanctuary

Sacred Mtn. Sanctuary

- Sacred Mountain Sanctuary
our hut -
ECO DESIGN: SACRED MOUNTAIN SANCTUARY is in all senses of the word a true Eco-Retreat Lodge, from site plan, architecture and gardens to constructed wetlands wastewater purification. It is the largest bamboo* building project in Bali and perhaps all of Indonesia and South East Asia. Over 10,000 bamboo stalks, all from Balinese forests mostly in the area of the Sanctuary were used and tied together by local craftsmen in the traditional manner to create the villas., Over 3,000 trees were saved by using bamboo as the main building material. The effect is pure magic, transporting one back in time when this ancient practice began.
Tap water comes from a mountain spring and is purified by sand filters and ultra violet light. Salad greens, vegetables, herbs, papaya, jack fruit, rambutan, mango and other varieties of fruit trees and food are organically grown in the Sanctuary's gardens. Garbage is separated. and recycled whenever possible. Organic waste from the kitchen is composted, adding nutrients to the soil. Furnishings by local craftspeople are almost all made of bamboo. Wastewater Gardens designed by Dr. Mark Nelson of the Planetary Coral Reef Foundation treat the septic and grease trap waste water.
The site plan was designed utilizing the natural contours of the land to reduce earth moving. Buildings are almost all raised off the ground for minimal environmental impact. Almost all the building materials came from the Sidemen area. Bamboo was harvested from the surrounding mountain forests. Stone and sand were supplied by the river and nearby quarries; Alang-alang (special grass) for the roofs came from the high mountain meadows that ring the valley. Most all of the other materials came from the neighboring island of Java. Local carpenters and assistants worked creatively alongside craftsmen from other parts of Bali, Java and Lombok to build SACRED MOUNTAIN SANCTUARY.

Rest in Peace

Rest in Peace

This shot is potentially one of the last I'll be uploading for a while. It was taken on Saturday night and on Sunday while frolicking in a river at the top of a Scottish hill my camera had a disagreement with some water and fried and died :o(

I've been saving up some loose change in a sweet jar for some time now, so I'm going to spend tonight counting it out to see what I have and then I'll need to do some research on a new camera. Luckily I'm into Pentax and Pentax is into weather sealing... and I now see the advantages of this more than perhaps I had in the past! I would love the new Pentax K7 but my pennies aren't going to stretch that far, but I'm hoping I might manage to stretch to the K200D which is pretty much an upgraded version of my now dead K100D :o(

On the positive side, I've been trying to work out the best workflow using Lightroom and I reckon I have a good system in place now, so this is going to be a good chance to go back through my catalog and do some weeding. So there might be a chance for some uploads from shots that I revisit in the catalog.

It served me well.

72s exposure with ND400 filter

Update: I have a K200D now, with weather sealing ;o) Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find a K200D nowadays! I couldn't afford the K7 but this should do me just fine.

Further update: So about 2 hours after my camera died I was able to switch it on again but all I could do was press the shutter release. The screens didn't work, so I couldn't change any settings... about 4 hours later the screen started to flash up occasionally but it was still unusable. I left it overnight and by the morning the screen was stable but the date would reset everytime I switched it on and off. This made it pretty much unusable as the EXIF data was always going to be wrong. I left it for a few days hoping it might recover more but it didn't so I bought a K200D. I did begin to wonder if all the other settings were being kept but only the date lost, if there was some capacitor somewhere that had blown but just in case it hadn't I took out the batteries and let it sit hoping any residual charges would drain away. After a week I went back to it and this time it retained the date. I held my breath for a few days but all seems to be well. I seems to be working almost as good as ever again... the only thing I'm getting is a memory card error ever so often but when I switch on and off this is resolved. :o)

~ The Moment ~

~ The Moment ~

This is a story about time: 1 hr ----> 5 min ---> 1 min --> 30 sec -> 1/50 sec !

1 hr: it took me an hour to get there, Pinnacle Cove, Point Lobos, Carmel;
5 min: once arrived at this location before sunset, it took me less than 5 minutes climbing down from the vista point to that rock where I can get the best view of the scene;
1 min: watching the Sunbeam forming thru the rolling clouds (it only lasted for a minute or less), I set up all my gears in the quickest way possible ...
30 sec: this is the time I had to find the best comp, level, focus, ... but there was no time left to install my ND filters system because I noticed those birds were ready to takeoff and I didn't want to miss it! So I simply chose the rays of the sunlight to set up the aperture, which is 1/50sec. Not an awesome seascape photo overall, but I'm still glad to capture this 1/50 second in life.
