ATLANTIS - Paradise Island, Bahamas!

ATLANTIS - Paradise Island, Bahamas!

The Atlantis is a luxury resort and water park located on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Atlantis was created by South African hotel magnate Sol Kerzner and Kerzner International Ltd. The resort has often been voted to be the best and most beautiful family vacation spot in the world.

Atlantis was expanded in 2007 to include the 63 acre, 200 million gallon Aquaventure – a combination of water slides, lazy rivers, and rapids. The centerpiece of the attraction is the Power Tower which contains four waterslides and a rock-climbing wall. The slides include The Abyss, The Drop, The Falls and The Surge. Aquaventure also includes one of the resorts most popular attractions, The Current. The new additions to Atlantis alone are bigger than most other resorts. At over 400 acres, the entire Atlantis Resort dwarfs its nearest competitors.

The Harborside Villas next to Atlantis’ Marina Village offer what many consider to be the best value for accommodations at the resort.

The Harborside Villas
Situated right on the Atlantis marina and next to the new Marina Village are the Harborside Villas. Built as timeshare offerings, Phase One units are sold out to private owners and the vast majority of the Phase Two units are also privately owned.

Like all Atlantis accommodations – the Harborside Villas allow for full access to all Atlantis activities. In addition, similar to the Cove and Reef, Harborside has its own pool for the exclusive use of guests. Harborside also has its own hot tub, exercise room, poolside activities, restaurant and convenience shop.

There are three types of villas available at Harborside – some units can be attached with a connecting door at the living rooms to offer additional configurations for larger families or families traveling together.

One bedroom Deluxe units are about 550 sf and accommodate up to 4 people in a condo with separate bedroom, living room, kitchenette and dining area. One-bedroom Premium units are 960 sf and accommodate up to 5 people by adding a rollaway twin bed – the kitchen and dining areas are larger and the bathroom is configured to allow for separate vanities and a 2-person jacuzzi in the master bedroom. Booking a Premium unit also guarantees a balcony or patio.

Two-bedroom Deluxe units are essentially the same footprint as a Premium one-bedroom but these units are configured to allow for two bedrooms and two baths. The two-bedroom Deluxe allows for up to 6 guests. Unfortunately, at this writing there are very few 2-bedrooms at the resort and the upcharge is considerable over the one-bedroom units.

Smaller families should consider the savings in booking a one-bedroom unit. Remember, rates for accommodations at Atlantis are all about how many people will be using the facilities – paying for a larger room than you need means paying for occupancy you are not using.

Rates at the Harborside Villas will often be comparable to a standard hotel room on the resort - making these units the favorite accommodation for families at the resort.

Whatever your choice of accommodations, remember these key essentials when booking:

•Atlantis is not a day trip – or three-four – leave plenty of time to explore at a leisurely pace.
•Get the final rate for all accommodations from your booking agent. Nothing ruins a great vacation quicker than finding out about an additional 25-30% in surcharges at check-out.
•Food prices in the Caribbean are high – everything has to be shipped in – consider an accommodation with kitchen amenities for the savings and convenience. No, you won’t be cooking big meals but the savings and convenience of being able to have breakfast in most mornings is hard to overstate.
Give us a call! 1-800-610-6522

You can see our catamaran in the distance and the dinghy that we used to get to the beach in the foreground. It was a beautiful day to get some sun on the picturesque Xanadu Beach.

The most prominent building near the beach is a hotel that was purchased by Howard Hughes in the 1970's and served as the get-away of choice for Hollywood elite at the time. Howard Hughes lived on the top floor of the hotel until a few days before his death. The hotel is currently on sale for $45 Million.

The water pipes make a very specific accommodation for this doorway into the Library. You might ask how I *know* that it is a doorway to the library, well quite simple in fact. I worked there for 3 years, some time of which we were moving large portions of the collection to the science library, and this is the door that let us keep the books inside, instead of going over the podium =D

For too many years, Amtrak stopped with sleepers on the Lake Shore Limited from Boston to Albany, only running a coach stub train. This is in the Albany station waiting for the NY Lake Shore to arrive and board headed West to Chicago. Fortunately Amtrak brought back sleeping accommodations from Boston so now we no longer have to change trains in Albany.

Himalayan Hotel, 1 Star

Himalayan Hotel, 1 Star

Cute little hotel / inn, but targeted at the budget conscious pilgrim, not the tourists with cameras. I would give it a 1-star rating. Key features are attached bathroom with Western-style toilets and a water heater in the bathroom that delivers hot water. The sheets on the bed are rarely laundered, if at all, but if you complain, they will get fresh sheets. You don't want to use their towels. The floors have cheap carpet that are never vacuumed, ever, so don't take off your flip flops. Ceiling fans, but no air conditioning or heating. An occasional cockroach on the balcony, but none in the room. Color TV in the room + cable, but only Indian programs. Typically, one dull fluorescent light on the ceiling illuminates the whole room, which makes it really dingy looking.

Price: 700 Rupees or about US $15 per day. OK to stay in a crunch, but if you can afford more than $15 per day, look for better digs.

Kilchurn Castle

Kilchurn Castle

Kilchurn Castle was built in about 1450 by Sir Colin Campbell, first Lord of Glenorchy, as a five storey tower house with a courtyard defended by an outer wall. By about 1500 an additional range and a hall had been added to the south side of the castle. Further buildings went up during the 16th and 17th centuries. Kilchurn was on a small island in Loch Awe scarcely larger than the castle itself, although it is now connected to the mainland as the water level was altered in 1817. The castle would have been accessed via an underwater or low lying causeway.[1][2]

At the turn of the 16th century Kilchurn Castle was extended by Sir Duncan Campbell with the addition of a single storey dining hall built along the inside of the south curtain. During the second half of the century, another Sir Colin Campbell, the 6th Laird, continued to improve the castle's accommodation by adding some chambers to the north of the tower house, and remodelling the parapet. This included the introduction of the circular corner turrets adorned by corbels, most of which have survived remarkably well.

Towards the end of the 16th century the Clan MacGregor of Glenstrae were occupying the castle. Once owning the lands of Glenorchy during the 14th century, until they passed through marriage to the Campbells, the MacGregors were appointed keepers to Kilchurn Castle as the Campbells spent much of their time at Fincharn. This arrangement lasted until the very early part of the 17th century, when a violent feud between the two families brought it to an end and the Campbells retook possession.

In 1681, Sir John Campbell of Glenorchy was made 1st Earl of Breadalbane. To take advantage of the turbulence of the times, he converted Kilchurn into a modern barracks, capable of housing 200 troops. His main addition was the three storey L-shaped block along the north side.
Engraving of Kilchurch Castle by William Miller, 1846

Kilchurn was then used as a Government garrison during the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite risings. The Campbells attempted, unsuccessfully, to sell Kilchurn to the government, after they moved in 1740 to Taymouth Castle in Perthshire.

In 1760, the castle was badly damaged by lightning and was completely abandoned; the remains of a turret of a tower, still resting upside-down in the centre of the courtyard, attest to the violence of the storm.

Kilchurn was then used as a Government garrison during the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite risings. The Campbells attempted, unsuccessfully, to sell Kilchurn to the government, after they moved in 1740 to Taymouth Castle in Perthshire.

In 1760 the castle was badly damaged by lightning and was completely abandoned; the remains of a turret of a tower, still resting upside-down in the centre of the courtyard, attest to the violence of the storm.

Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie are touring North America together. The closest stop to Mr Boxhead is, naturally, in Montreal, Quebec. These are the questions that have been plaguing Mr Boxhead for a couple of weeks now:

How can I get to Montreal since I don't have a car?
What will be easier/cheaper - plane or train?
Can I afford to take this trip?
How much will the hotel cost?
Can I get a few days off around January 16th?

BAH! Maybe I can start a "Get Boxhead to Montreal" charity fund. lol

Room With Two Views

The room we got was right on the corner of St-Denis & Ontario, with a view of both streets. Great little room. Only a little street noise... if by a little you mean less than the annoying girl in the next room who decided around 2am that she was "going to stay up ALL night. Woo Hoo". Luckily she was only around that one night. Lucky for her.

THE WEST BEACH AND THE WEST CLIFF FROM THE PIER. BOURNEMOUTH. 1990

THE WEST BEACH AND THE WEST CLIFF FROM THE PIER. BOURNEMOUTH. 1990

The West Beach as seen from the pier. Although the area in the background is known as the West Cliff, the lower part that slopes down towards Pier Approach is more accurately, the South Cliff.

Starting up on the right we can see the Court Royal Convalescent Home for the South Wales Mining industry that was built in the 1850s as Madeira House. It is clearly visible in many early photographs from 1860 onwards and is a great datum point when comparing then and now images.

The big brown building is the Bournemouth International Centre that opened in 1984. It occupies land that where the picturesque, thatched Cliff Cottage stood amongst the pines until the area was redeveloped in the 1870s. Some development had already occured in the 1850s and 60s when the previously mentioned Madeira House and a few other properties were built at the cliff edge.
Most of the properties became hotels that had served the town's tourism industry for over a century when they were demolished to make way for the B.I.C in the early 1980s. The list of hotels that once stood where the B.I.C sits includes the Southcliffe, Pier View, Starley's, Towercliffe, Berkeley Hall, Charborough Hall, Beechcliffe Hall, Clifton Hall, Regent Palace, South Cliff Lodge, Brownswood Hall, Walmer and Empress along with it's neighbour, the Scientific Motors garage.

Beyond the B.I.C is the Bay Hotel that had previously been the Beacon Hotel and the Bourne Bay Hotel, which is Beacon House, built in the mid 1860s, remodelled. The original house is recognisable in the building's facade.

Above the Bay Hotel is the Highcliff Hotel. In the early 1870s some houses were being built on the site when they were purchased before they were completed and converted into the original hotel building that was later extended.

To the right of the Highcliff, the tower block is Admiral's Walk in West Cliff Rd, and infront of that is the terrace of former coastguard cottages that are now part of the Highcliff Hotel.

On the undercliff promenade, on the right is the plot where the Bournemouth Club was erected in 1871 and remained in an enlarged form until the 1960s.It is where the Oceanarium has stood since 2000.

The Westover and Bournemouth Rowing Club is immediately beyond the white wall. They have occupied the site since 1865 but their lease is unlikely to be renewed in 2011 as the neighbouring Oceanarium is looking to expand.

The rest of the buildings are shelters and toilets, with the one on the furthest left having been converted into the Happylands amusement arcade.
