Father & son trucks

Father & son trucks

Here are the trucks that we had. Dad's is the all red one with the 265 V-8 motor in the back. We took the motor and trans out of a 1955 Chevrolet. It also gave up the differential so it could be an open drive line. When you looked under the hood you would of thought it was done by the factory. Front wheels changed to 5 lugs so all rims matched. Mine is the other one with the stock 6 motor. Wish I'd kept it.

Path to famous waterhole

Path to famous waterhole

0 PHOTOGRAPH PARTICULARS 0

The visitors's center and the hiking paths at El Morro are really well done. The rangers stationed here were among some of the most knowledgeable and helpful, we encountered on the entire road trip.

One ranger in particular was quick witted and seemed to enjoy a little verbal sparring. When I returned from one hike I asked him "Can you tell me what those small round metal objects are that are spaced about 12 feet apart at the base of the inscription cliffs are?".

He smiled and responded "Yes".

A long pause (while he smiled at me and waited)..

Then I asked him what they were, not are you able to tell me what they are. He enjoyed that. The round metal spike heads, he told me, were driven into the face of the cliffs by early scientists "mapping" the inscriptions on the cliffs. Each round metal badge had a number to cross reference with the inscriptions.

He was full of interesting information and clearly enjoyed his job. Fun.

Rain and snow melt feed a small waterhole at the base of a cliff. For thousands of years it was the only reliable water for over 30 miles in any directions. The cliffs served as a landmark making the waterhole easy to locate. The original waterhole has been enlarged a bit over time by those who depended upon it, but it is still dwarfed by the towering cliffs that shade it and keep it from evaporating in the summer heat.

The waterhole is along the natural route between the Acoma and Zuni Pueblos. Anasazi built masonry dwellings and kivas on top the El Morro sandstone mesa and added their petroglyphs to the rock faces of the cliffs near the waterhole. These cliff faces would record the passing of many interesting, famous, and widely varied travelers.

The oldest “non-Native American” inscription was left by Don Juan de Onate in 1605. Lots of the Spanish conquistadores left their message here and “paso por aqui” or “pasamos por aqui” (I or we passed by way of here in Spanish), is a common message carved in the cliffs. Ramon Garcia Jurado carved a message on the cliffs in 1709 just 30 years after the Pueblo Revolt, where the Pueblo people united and drove the Spaniards out of their homeland (temporarily).

Among the Native American bighorn sheep petroglyphs and Spanish “paso por aqui” messages a poet left a poem in 1629 cut in stone. Then came Americans and the U.S. Army. Lt. J.H. Simpson left a crisp inscription here in 1849. Then the somewhat bizarre: in 1859 the U.S. Army experimented with the use of camels for desert travel in the American Southwest.

The camels were bought in Egypt; trained in Texas; and led by Lt. Edward Beale (He was originally in the U.S. Navy!) with a fellow named Breckenridge, in charge of the camels. They stopped by at El Morro twice, both in 1857 and in 1859 when they carved their names in the cliffs.

By the time the civil war began, the U.S. Army gave up the idea of camels and most were sold or turned loose. There are many strange stories of those travelers who ran across “wild camels” in the Southwest in subsequent years, many of whom must have given up whatever brand of whisky they may have been drinking at the time.

The stories with a link to El Morro, go on and on, and make interesting reading. A visit to El Morro brings many of the stories much more to life. It was a good stop and excellent hike. Ice had closed a portion of the loop trail, so Ed and I hiked to the end of the trail and the back tracked up to the top of the mesa to hike the other portion.

0 ACTIVITIES DAY SEVEN OF TWELVE 0

This would be an interesting day of travel on this road trip but not a particularly good day for photographs. In fact, there is only one photograph that I took the entire day that I’m proud of. The rest do little more than share a story of road trip travels and preserve good memories.

After a now customary big breakfast at Denny’s, we left Grants, New Mexico for El Morro National Monument. El Morro had perhaps the most interesting history of any place we visited on this road trip. There are few “knock out” photos to be had here but hiking along the inscriptions panel on the face of the cliffs; the water pool that “made” the place; or up across the top of the cliffs where there are kivas and masonry ruins and views for hundreds of miles - - certainly made this a great place to stop and visit.

Leaving El Morro, we drove to the Zuni Pueblo. I got my favorite photograph of the day of a young Zuni girl clutching her precious puppy, she said she had named “angel”. Zuni Pueblo though, is one of two places we visited on this road trip that I would not highly recommend. The pueblo itself is so run down it is a bit depressing, even though all the Zuni people we met were friendly, helpful, and wonderful people.

The women working the official Zuni crafts outlet store will never make a living working on sales commission but in their own unhurried way, they went about life. I bought a jet bear fetish here with

Pretty, But Not So Good When You're Sick

Pretty, But Not So Good When You're Sick

Mohammed wanted to show us all the tourist sights on or near the Damascus-Aleppo highway en route, which would under normal circumstances have been a fantastic idea. However, Emma really wasn't well, and actually passed out in Hama shortly after I took this photo. Fortunately it wasn't anything serious - just a combination of dehydration, exhaustion and heatstroke, I think. Doubly fortunate was the fact that no locals (or Mohammed) saw Emma pass out - they're so helpful and concerned about the welfare of visitors that they most definitely would have called her an ambulance, which would have been overdoing things slightly.

Emma had more or less recovered from her gastro by the time we reached Tartous, and even managed to keep on having a great time in Aleppo despite her sickness. Don't let this story put you off going to Syria - on the whole, hygiene standards there are excellent, and certainly far better than Morocco or Egypt. Emma just got unlucky....

Now, to the picture. The Orontes river flows from the Lebanese mountains down into Syria before entering the Mediterranean on the Turkish coast. The Orontes flows straight through the middle of the town of Hama, but Hama lies in a slight valley, with the fields surrounding it at a slightly higher elevation. The Romans got around this by building big wooden nourias, or waterwheels, to ferry the waters of the Orontes along aqueducts to the surrounding fields. The water wheels then remained in use for almost 2,000 years, before being superseded by diesel-powered water pumps. However, the city authorities, in their wisdom, kept all the remaining water wheels, and provided funds to make sure that locals were trained in their construction and maintenance. Hama now gets a decent amount of tourism due to their presence.

strongback 002

strongback 002

Strongback on short legs. I made this the minimum length needed to build the boat so I have more space at each end in my 20 foot long shop. I later added caster wheels under each leg to allow this to be rolled about the workshop as needed for convenience. I made some wood blocks that I screwed to the plywood floor of the shop that kept the strongback from moving about until I had the hull all planked up. The shop is 12 x 20 (outiside dimensions) and thus without the wheels the fit would be too tight for comfort.

1957 Santa's Corvette convertible left

Founded by Louis Chevrolet and ousted GM founder William C. Durant on November 8, 1911, Chevrolet was acquired by General Motors in 1917. Chevrolet was positioned by Alfred Sloan to sell a lineup of mainstream vehicles to directly compete against Henry Ford's Model T in the 1920s, and continues to hold its position as General Motors' highest-selling brand to the present day, with "Chevrolet" or "Chevy" being at times synonymous with GM. In North America, Chevrolet offers a full range of automobiles, from subcompact cars to medium-duty commercial trucks.
The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car by the Chevrolet division of General Motors. The first model was designed by Harley Earl and introduced in 1953. Myron Scott is credited for naming the car after the corvette, a small, maneuverable warship. It has been produced in six generations in coupe, convertible, t-top coupe, and targa coupe body styles. Originally built in Flint, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri, it is currently built at a GM assembly plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The first generation Corvette was introduced late in the 1953 model year and ended in 1962. These cars are often referred to as the "solid-axle" models since the independent rear suspension did not debut until the 1963 Sting Ray. 300 hand-built polo white Corvettes were produced for the 1953 model year, making it the rarest and one of the most sought after of all Corvettes. The 1955 model saw the introduction of the 265 cu in (4.34 L) V8 engine offered as an option, however the first seven off the production line featured the standard "Blue Flame" Inline-6.
A new body was introduced for the 1956 model featuring a new "face" and side coves; the taillight fins were gone. An optional fuel injection system was made available in the middle of the 1957 model year. It was one of the first mass-produced engines in history to reach 1 bhp (0.75 kW) per cubic inch and Chevrolet's advertising agency used a "one hp per cubic inch" slogan for advertising the 283 bhp (211 kW) 283 cu in (4.64 L) Small-Block engine. Other options included power windows (1956), hydraulically operated power convertible top (1956), four speed manual transmission (late 1957), and heavy duty brakes and suspension (1957).

Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a

Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a

This is an 80% scale replica of a Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a. It was built and owned by the Great War Flying Museum in Brampton, Ontario.

This replica SE5a is of interest because it is one of two prototypes for this scale plan set. It is the 'sister' airplane of C-FQGL, which is still flying with the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley, British Columbia. For much of its life with the GWFM, this aircraft wore the colourful (if short lived) paint scheme of A 8936 with No. 60 Sqn. RFC, wearing a blue nose and wheel covers. William Avery Bishop, VC wore this scheme briefly before an official scheme was handed down for the SE5, forcing it to be painted in more conventional British colours. Following its more recent rebuild, QGM was repainted to represent B4863, as flown by James McCudden, VC while serving with No. 56 Sqn. RFC.

Basement of the Petersen Meuseum (Boot Hill Express)

Fellow Flickrite "corbettclassics" told me the Boot Hill Express (designed by Ray Farhner) was down in the basement at the Petersen Museum AND HE WAS RIGHT!!! This is my favorite model car from Monogram and now a childhood dream came true I got to touch it and take pictures of the actual horse-drawn hearse(now hot rod) of the mid-1800s era With a 4. I asked this guy that worked there if it was really in their basement, He said , " Sure is, you wanna see it?....... WOW so here are the pictures of whats in the basement. If you join as a Petersen museum member you get access to the basement on special occasions.

With an old West concept in mind, an old hearse provides a most unusual basis for a show car. Originally a horse-drawn hearse of the mid-1800s era, the "Express" was built by Cunningham of New York. The coach body with its beautiful ancient carriage styling and black velvet curtains has been beautifully reproduced in this fine model.

The interior is completely detailed including even the wood grain floor and coffin rollers. Mounted inside is a complete 500 horse Hilborn injected Hemi engine with many plated parts. Long plated intake stacks protrude through the roof adorned with six carved ornaments, and body-length plated exhaust headers run below the body.

The one-piece frame mounts a plated '48 Ford read end and a plated CAE straight tube axle up front. Wheels are American mags, steering arrangement is a slightly altered '63 VW topped by a model 'T' steering wheel. Moon hydraulic throttle, push-button transmission and Stewart Warner instruments finish off the power pack. The seat and backboard are diamond tuffed. This type of upholstery was quite often used on old carriages such as the hearse. The unusual brass headlamps and tail lamps on the actual car are relics from India.

Triumph Stag

Triumph Stag

The Triumph Stag is a British car that was sold between 1970 and 1978 by the Triumph Motor Company styled by the Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti.

Envisioned as a luxury sports car, the Triumph Stag was designed to compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz SL class models. All Stags were four-seater convertible coupes, but for structural rigidity - and to meet new American rollover standards at the time - the Stag required a B-pillar "roll bar" hoop connected to the windscreen frame by a T-bar. A removable hardtop was a popular factory option for the early Stags, and was later supplied as a standard fitment.
The car started as a styling experiment cut and shaped from a 1963-4 Triumph 2000 pre-production saloon, which had also been styled by Michelotti, and loaned to him by Harry Webster, Director of Engineering at Triumph from the early to late 1960s. Their agreement was that if Webster liked the design, Triumph could use the prototype as the basis of a new Triumph model. Harry Webster, who was a long time friend of Giovanni Michelotti, who he called "Micho", absolutely loved the design and spirited the prototype back to England. The end result, a two door drop head (convertible) had little in common with the styling of its progenitor 2000, but retained the suspension and drive line. Triumph liked the Michelotti design so much that they propagated the styling lines of the Stag into the new T2000/T2500 saloon and estate model lines of the 1970s.

Harry Webster had also already started development and testing of a new unique, all Triumph designed overhead cam (OHC) 2.5 litre fuel injected (PI) V8 to be used in the Stag, large saloons and estate cars. The vision was to allow Triumph to compete in the V8 marketplace. Under the direction of Harry Webster's replacement, Spen King in 1968, the new Triumph OHC 2.5 PI V8 was enlarged to 2997 cc and fitted with dual Zenith-Stromberg 175 CDSE carburettors to meet emission standards in one of the target markets the USA.

Maximum power and torque were 145 bhp and 230 Nm respectively. Top speed was 115 mph, the 0-60 mph time was 11.6 seconds and average fuel consumption was 23 mpg.

As in the Triumph 2000 model line, monocoque construction was employed, as was fully independent suspension—MacPherson struts in front, semi-trailing arms at the rear. Braking was by front disc and rear drum brakes, while steering was power-assisted rack and pinion.

Only 25,877 cars were produced between 1970 and 1977. Of this number, 6,780 were export models, of which only 2,871 went to the United States. Several variants were produced, noted only in changes of the production numbering sequences, and these have become unofficially designated as Early Mk I 1970, the Mk I (1971–1972/3), Mk II (1973) and Late Mk II (1974–1977). The addition of twin coachlines is an indication of a Mk II variant.

Whilst official Triumph parts manuals may differentiate variants by commission plate ranges, it is common (from owner's observations) that minor parts for the old variant may turn up in early productions of the new variant. For example Mk2 cars have been known to have Mk1 wiring looms or door latches. Triumph either took the opportunity of clearing out the parts bin or quality control was not their best attribute.

Most cars were fitted with a Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic transmission. The other choice was a derivative of the Triumph TR2 gearbox which had been modified and improved over the years for use in the TR4/A/IRS/TR5/250/6. The first gear ratio was raised and needle roller bearings were used in place of the bronze bushings on the layshaft. Early models could be ordered with an A-type Laycock overdrive unit and later ones frequently came with a J-type Laycock unit. The overdrive option is highly desirable as it lowers the engine RPM.

Other than the choice of transmissions there were very few factory installed options. Some early cars came with just the soft-top and some with just the hard-top but most ended up with both. Electric windows, power steering and power assisted brakes were standard. Options included air conditioning, chrome wire wheels, luggage rack, Koni shock absorbers, floor mats and Lucas Square Eight fog lamps, and a range of aftermarket products, most of which were dealer installed as optional accessories could also be fitted.

The Triumph Stag has sizeable club and owner support and a number of specialist suppliers. About 9,000 Stags are believed to survive in the United Kingdom. The car's popularity is due to its performance, comparative rarity and its Michelotti styling. There are a number of enthusiast clubs supporting the Stag, elevating this classic to its intended place in popularity envisioned by its designers.

1. Typical Yutong style: The designer emphasizes the overall effects and harmonization with regard to the styling. The English letter “Y” is embodied on the front wall, while “T” on the rear wall, which integrates the trademark of ‘Yutong” into the overall style in a vivid way.

2. The front wall skin can be fully removed to facilitate the maintenance on the headlamp and wiper as well as the replacement of bulbs.

3. The decorative cover of wipers adds the finishing touch to the front wall styling.

4. The side wall C-shaped aluminum plate serves as a stabilizing framework visually, to separate the passenger zone and driving zone effectively. By developing the styling characteristics of New Lion’s Star, the quality of a high-end bus is inherited. The smooth curve of upper edge of the tensioned skin is full of the sense of motions even if the bus is stationary. The side compartment door projects out of the tensioned skin plane by 25mm, in a gradual change toward the front wall skin lamp frame and also in a gradual change backward the rear wall skin, to intensify the sense of layers and the sense of motions of the bus. The reversing mirror extends from the front top, to integrate with the roof corrugated iron and front top naturally.

5. The upwards-moving side compartment door can spare space while being opened, and the run-through large luggage compartment has a volume of up to 8.5m3.

6. The guide’s special storage box, footrest socket and ticket box will create a convenient and comfortable riding and working space for the guide.

7. ZK6128H chassis is developed on the basis of MAN’s sophisticated semi-integral chassis. The construction and trial production of the whole vehicle cost a period of two years, to achieve outstanding performance and high technical level. Most part of assemblies are imported, reliable and durable, representing Yutong’s new generation of large-sized high-end products.

Miller's Guide 2nd edition

The park is the site of a water-powered grist mill that was built in 1846. It was once the center of social activity as Napa Valley settlers gathered to have their corn and wheat ground into meal or flour. The owner of the mill was Dr. Edward Turner Bale. He received the property in a land grant from the Mexican government and lived near the site until his death in 1849. The mill remained in use until the early 1900s.
The mill and its 36-foot water wheel are protected as a state historic landmark and have been partially restored. A trail connects the historic park to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. Additionally, the park includes the site of the first church in the Napa Valley as well as the Pioneer Cemetery.

Location - Directions
The historic park is three miles north of St. Helena (3369 N St.) on Highway 29.
Latitude/Longitude: 38.5052 / -122.4691

Seasons/Climate/Recommended Clothing
The weather can be changeable; layered clothing is recommended.

Facilities and Activities

Visitors can hike from the mill on the historic trail to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, which features extensive picnic facilities and a number of trails. The round trip hike from Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park is approximately two miles.

Milling demonstrations and historic tours are offered on weekends.

School tours are available by reservations on Tuesday only. Reservations can be made by calling Bothe-Napa Valley State Park at (707) 942-4575.

The park is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Please call the park prior to visiting.
More about the Park
The gristmill and granary were built with local materials, Douglas firs and coast redwoods. Some timbers were cut to length with the bark left on, while others were roughed out with hand tools. The timbers were notched and held in place with wooden pegs as well as nails and screws.
The foundation of the structure is native stone. The mill was powered by a waterwheel, with water diverted from Mill Creek nearby. A ditch carried the water from a millpond to a wooden flume, which brought the water to the top of the waterwheel.
The first wheel did not provide enough power during dry summers and was replaced by a larger one, similar to the one at the mill today.
Farmers brought grain to the mill where it was placed into the boot of an elevator to be mechanically transported upstairs where it was cleaned by various types of equipment. The slow turning of the old grind stones and the dampness of the mill's site gave the meal a special quality for making cornbread, yellowbread, shortening bread and spoon bread. As old timers put it, "When meal comes to you that way, like the heated underside of a settin' hen, it bakes bread that makes city bread taste like cardboard."

Judy (me) and Mother

Mother fell twice this past week and is in ICU at a hospital 225 miles from my home. My husband and I drove up to see her and came back home the next day. She didn't break anything but fell on the back of her head and her back. Two days later, she passed out and laid there for several hours.

Edit - May 1, 2006 noon
Talked with nurse in ICU today by phone at lunch. She is stable, respiratory therapist worked with her. She is being moved to a regular floor. Praise God for answered prayers.

May 1, 2006 7:30 PM
Brother-in-law called. She is eating food and has been moved to a regular room. We are grateful for progress.

May 2, 2006 7:30 PM
Mother was moved to a Rehabilitation Hospital to receive therapy every day for 2 weeks. She walked a little today and has had several visitors.

May 3, 2006 9:00 PM
Mother had a physical therapy session today to use a walker and strengthen her left arm by pushing and pulling objects. She is now wearing street clothes and is pushed in a wheel chair to the cafeteria for her meals. I've purchased a lift chair from ebay to have at her home when she returns in about 2 weeks.

long day

long day

our day started at 6:30am.

drove through some intense fog to georgia for my niece's birthday party, did a lot of swimming, ate a yummy bbq lunch, apple-picking at my parents' house, tried to speed back home (only to be dead-stopped on I-85 for some construction), a quick change of clothes in the car, and then finished the day off with a 5K for meals on wheels (at least, i did - ken and emma had to sit it out because we didn't have time to load the jogging stroller in the car).

it was a great day, but i am pooped beyond belief, so i am going to crawl into a hot bath and then curl up with a book.

1952 Buick History

1952 Buick History

This is the history of the car up to the time it was purchased from Mr. Sullivans daughter by Mr. Givre In March of 2005.

Mr. Givre replaced the front floor sections and resurfaced the interior trunk area. He could not finish the work needed on the car so he placed it for sale on eBay where it was purchased by me in July 2005.

I have had it painted in our body shop (Valley Freightliner Inc.) where they removed the rust in the rocker panels and welded in new metal, I rebuilt the carburetor, had the gas tank cleaned and sealed, replaced the fuel tank sending unit, installed all new heater hoses and new radiator hoses with new antifreeze, cleaned, painted and tuned the engine, Repacked the front wheel bearings, installed new wheel cylinders and a rebuilt master cylinder, installed the new carpet that came with the car, had the front and rear seats re-upholstered, installed new trunk front and side cardboards, removed the dash, stripped it and painted it, cleaned all the instruments, rebuilt the radio, and installed a new exhaust system including a NOS heat riser valve and NOS manifold.

This is a car that can be driven now and enjoyed while doing the details that need to be finished. In the 3200 miles I have driven this car it has used 1quart of oil, doesn’t smoke at all, and the transmission works flawlessly. There is a small crack in the windshield but it has been repaired so it hasn’t grown at all since then. All turn signals, headlights, and brake lights work well however the dimmer switch needs a little extra tap now and then when changing from high to low beams.
