Fire: Living Room Standing in the kitchen looking back to the living room is our couch that got melted along the back. Some of our frames fell down onto the couch exposing the once white wall. Miraculously the coffee table was untouched, getting only a bit of soot. This was VERY NICE as all of my library books regarding my thesis were down there. The trash bag was full of garbage or possibly clothes. Beyond the couch is our plastic Christmas tree. Near the window is our cat tree that is now melted. Kim made that by herself. We were going to keep it and re-carpet it as that was all that was wrong with it, as we were promised a cat tree from a friend. I don't know what happened with that offer but we don't have a cat tree and I'm not going to ask. I need a bigger coffee table ...it has become a catch-all for random stuff that really needs to be put away properly. A table of division This was our home dining room table at 25 Columbus Avenue, when we were growing up. We are here playing card games, probably "Go - fish". I can recall the years of uncomfortable tension, and dysfunction that passed over this table. When we were called to sit down for dinner, I would cringe with apprehension. It would be quite revealing if this table was able to talk about it's past, and reveal the suppressed or assertive discord that occurred, around this table. From this table I was told not to use such words as "I love this or that", or that I had to cross my legs when I sat in a chair only like a real man would, as defined by my parents. This was a table for repressive criticism and conditioning. We were innocent children, and just went along with the narrow minded behavioral conditioning assuming this was normal. It was uncomfortable to sit at this table especially when our father was present. Luckily he was often away on a business trip of some sort. A table should have brought us together, it should not have divided us. The brass turnings are the threaded caps that hold the lamp shades on the table lamps (just don't tell mom...). I stained the wood on the geodesic a rich cherrywood to visually separate it from the base. Inset into that are 3 black brackets with the classic Victorian webbing. In this shot you can see the half round brass nails on each of the wood tips, but now I wish I had used the next size larger because brass turns dark over time anyway. I plan on making a few more similar to this, but with amber glass inset into the open pentagons for a low wattage night light Aqua Pura I used backlighting for this one. The Amber glow is from the table lamp on the side. Mohonk Mountain House Mohonk Mountain House 1000 Mountain Rest Road New Paltz, NY 12561 Corner table in the spectacular dining room. ------------------- The Early Years. On a beautiful fall day in 1869, Alfred Homans Smiley, with family and friends, took an excursion to Paltz Point (now known as Sky Top.) On this mountainside outside of New Paltz, they discovered 280 acres of rugged terrain, a lake, and a small tavern owned and operated by John F. Stokes. It was the kind of place Alfred's twin brother Albert Keith Smiley had always dreamed of for a summer retreat. Within weeks, Albert bought the property for $28,000 and with the help of Alfred began transforming and expanding the original tavern into Mohonk Mountain House. Albert's first guests were so enchanted with the natural surroundings and hospitality that they wanted to spend the entire "season" at Mohonk Mountain House. Mohonk is a corruption of the Delaware Indian word Mogonck, which some believe to mean "lake in the sky." This was a Quaker hotel upon opening, and temperance was observed. Dancing and public card playing was prohibited. Instead, the lodge offered nature walks, lectures, evening concerts, boating, fishing, bowling and a ten-minute prayer service every morning after breakfast. The founder of Mohonk, Albert Smiley, was born in Kennebec Country, Maine with his identical twin brother Alfred, to Quaker parents with Scottish and English ancestors. The Smiley twins became ardent scholars, dedicated Quakers, and nature lovers, and graduated from Haverford College to become teachers and then principals at the Friends School in Providence, Rhode Island. Alfred later moved to Poughkeepsie, New York with the intention of farming - until he made his fortuitous outing to Paltz Point in 1869. Albert served as owner and host of the Mountain House and Alfred as on-site manager in the early years. After Alfred left to start his own Mountain Houses on Minnewaska Lake, the twins' half-brother David jointed Albert in the managing of Mohonk Mountain House. David Smiley (1855-1930), the twins' half-brother and Philadelphia schoolteacher, joined Albert in 1881 as General Manager with his wife Effie. He made Mohonk almost self-sufficient in its ability to provide electrical and heating power, along with some fresh vegetables and meat. He was responsible for constructing several buildings and for road and trail designs. From 1879 to 1910, the once small lakeside inn grew to its present architectural form. Albert Smiley gradually bought the surrounding land and farms to create a 7,500-acre estate. He said, "I have treated this property, the result of seventy-six purchases, as a landscape artist does his canvas, only my canvas covers seven square miles." With the help of architects, stonemasons, carpenters, gardeners, and local laborers, Albert and Alfred (and later Daniel Smiley) designed and constructed Mohonk Mountain House along with its gardens, gazebos, landscape, and more than 60 miles of carriage roads, trails, and paths. During the decade of the 1870's, building improvements were a priority, and Mohonk was enlarged to include an addition housing the Dining Room and the Rock Building, a frame structure built on rock. In the 1880's and into the early 1900s, Daniel Smiley, with the help of noted architects Napoleon LeBrun and James E. Ware, fashioned the Mountain House into a Victorian and Edwardian architectural delight. A wealth of activities and events make up Mohonk's history. As a mostly self-sufficient Mountain House well into the twentieth century, Mohonk had its own farms, dairies, sawmill carriages and driving roads, boys' school, icehouse and ice harvest, telegraph office, and powerhouse. In Mohonk's earliest years, guests had to call for room service by using speaking tubes installed in the hallways. In 1883, an electric call bell system was installed in 165 guest rooms. Keep in mind electric lights were not introduced until ten years later in 1893. The Bell Board, located in the Lake Lounge, registered signals from guest rooms requesting room service. It operated on its own low-voltage, battery powered electric supply system using "bell wire" to connect guest rooms with the Bell Board. Each room was provided with a little card that indicated how many times to push the 'bell Button' for each service provided: for example, two times for ice water, or three times to request a porter. The signal would activate a mechanical indicator on the board, alerting the bellman to which room was calling. After reviewing the type of request displayed in the round, wooden box on their desk, the bellman performed the task and pushed a button to learn the request from the board. Eventually telephones were installed in the guest rooms, and this bell system became obsolete. The Architects. The principal architects were Napoleon LeBrun who designed most of the frame section of the 1/8 mile long hotel and James Edward Ware who August 15 or September 1 somebody please help me find a good roomate. I just put a post up on craigslist and so far I've been bombarded with inquiries from 20-year-old musicians. ugh! if you know of anyone looking or are looking for yourself to move, let me know... here's some details about my place in greenpoint: rent is $900 this includes a large bedroom and an office space off of that with two huge closets (but no windows). There's a cable hookup in there but I don't want cable so that bill would be entirely the responsibility of the other person if they want it. security deposit $900 to the landlord bedroom is pretty big with a view of the empire state building. very sexy. light pours in there in the afternoon so if you're not a morning person it's good kitchen is small but nice and clean with a view of the empire state building. I have a tall round table in there now, don't think anything else can squeeze in there really. there's lots of room for pots and pans and things like that bathroom is also clean and is next to the kitchen. the layout of the apartment is good because it's like having two separate apartments that share a bath and kitchen. gas and electric bills come to about $40 per person a month. I have two cats serge and rodge, who have a brokeback mountain dynamic. they don't bite or scratch people, but one of them used to scratch wooden objects. so I got those cat claw condoms and they seem to be doing the job. I'd like to be able to let them roam the apartment but if they person doesn't like that idea, I could keep them in my two rooms. the landlord will only allow two pets per apartment so unfortunately the person wouldn't be able to bring their pet if they have one. random other details I work as an instructional designer and do some costume design and construction on the side. I'm planning to move sometime during the course of next year-a rough guess would be half a year from now but there are some variables. there's usually no struggle for the bathroom because I don't have to be at work at 9 o'clock. I'm hardly home, but when I am, I like to entertain friends and relatives who are pretty considerate. the street has an american flag in front of every house, which could be annoying but which I find oddly compelling. it's a quiet and safe neighborhood. the laundromat is around the block, and so are two buses that go to the Lorimer or Graham Ave. L stop. these get there in about ten minutes and from there it's a quick ride into the city. mccarren park is close by and so is palace-$1.50 drafts and probably one of the only places in nyc you can still smoke. if you have a car, parking's pretty good. The Hazelton's! We finished up at the K’san Historical Village & Museum then continued on the beautiful Pioneer style Village of Hazelton. The first thing we did was eat! We had to meet our tour guide at 1 and it was 12:30 so we had to eat fast. Some of us went to the cozy coffee shop of Mercedes Beans and Model Teas and got some good food and drinks, while the remaining people went to the BC Cafe that has been taken over by new owners and has had a ‘face lift’ the food was great and hospitality was even better. Once we enjoyed our wonderful lunches we went down the River Boat where we met Carmen, our tour guide. She led us around Old Hazelton and told us some of the great history of the area. We saw the old Anglican Church that was built in the 1900’s and is still used for services today. We saw a building that looks like a River Boat. It is a replica of the original S.S Essington paddlewheel, which use to travel up the Bulkley River from Prince Rupert, delivering Hudson Bay merchandise to Hazelton. After we walked all around Old Hazelton we went into the Library that has a museum in it. In there they have information on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, medical history of all the Wrinch Memorial Hospitals we have had, logging and mining information. So many things to see! The tour of Old Hazelton is free and only takes an hour and you will learn so much about the area and how little old Hazelton came to be. After the tour we went into the River Boat which is now an art gallery. Many locals have their art on display in the gallery, it is so nice to see local art on display and ready for anyone who wants to go and see it. After seeing the sights of Old Hazelton we drove back up towards New Hazelton but, before we got to New Hazelton we stopped and walked along an apart of the Eagle Down Trail that goes all the way from Hagwilget Bridge to Old Hazelton. About 200m from the bridge there is a stop with picnic tables and benches and you can sit and look at the beautiful Hagwilget Canyon. We continued along the trail for a ways and ended up at the bridge, we walked across this massive bridge then we walked all the way down the trail to the water. It is wonderful under the bridge and you can just sit and watch the water flow by, it is so calm and serene. After hanging out for a while we headed back up the trail. Going down is just fine, it is always going back up that gets you though. It is a pretty steep trail but it is totally worth it. It was a great day to see the Hazelton’s and meet the people from the other Visitor Centres. front entry - brick paving cleaned and sealed! We hadn't sealed it earlier...so it tends to blacken in places where there is no overhang above during the monsoons. A pain it was to clean and seal - took 3 guys 6 days (there is more of it than in this picture)! Painted the old picnic table and found the chairs on the side of the road I had already painted the picnic table. You can't tell from the photo but he chairs are a pale green. I found them on the sidewalk a couple of days ago and thought the color would look really nice with the table. The table is going to come indoors to be our dining table. Ivy and I saw a picnic table used this way in a decorating magazine and really liked it. Weirdly, the color is the same as the house, or nearly so. That was purely coincidental. I had a quart of a much deeper blue that I had painted a swatch of on the living room wall but didn't like. I mixed it with the white trim paint for the house and it wound up being the same color as the house. After We decided to paint our dining room. We've both always loved and wanted a dark red room with white trim. So we figured since we're going to be here for a while, might as well make it our own. The only problem is that since this is a rental, when we move out we will have to paint the walls white again.
