I had to change T-shirts. It was to warm to leave the other one on. The illustrations on back- & frontside both sticked to my skin.

I do feel sweaty already with this weather. I shouldn't make it worse.

People keep on making remarks about the drops they see on my head. In this season each working day somebody has to say that my head looks wet.

After all those years I still don't have the right joke to silence them.

Self Montarge - The Machine

Self Montarge - The Machine

The brief for this website was to create a self montage based upon the machine that you see yourself. I wanted to create something metaphor - that is both criticising social as well as complimenting it.

The criticism is that we are all products of consumerism. We will buy items based upon what is 'cool' and will wear clothing to make us stand out. For example I will buy a heap of band t-shirts and then wear them out advertising the bands I have seen / like etc...

The positive aspect is that we proud of what we wear, our likes, out interests, out personality. We want to alert others to the type of person we are and would dress to advertise this. For example - I really love a band and thought their gig was awesome so I would by a tshirt.

Confusing? Try being in my brain...

As much as I want to get back into racing [downhill BMX/Motocross] I feel *SO* unsure. Gas is expensive, practice takes time, strength and dedication. I "gave up" it before for the art side of me, realizing now, I could have easily done both but I don't regret my decision.

Maybe just a few photography trips to Spring Creek and I'll be "over it". Or maybe I'll even want to race more. I don't know. Whatever I do I wont let being a woman stop me.

I'm addicted to desaturation lately, not depressed enough for black and white but not happy enough for my "vintage" processing either. I got a lot of junk in my truck, I mean, thoughts in my brain lately.

Process Color Manual: 24,000 CMYK combinations for design, prepress, and printing

Process Color Manual: 24,000 CMYK combinations for design, prepress, and printing

Today graphic design is done almost exclusively on screen, where colors look different than when they are printed. To help designers and the people who work with them address this critical disparity, authors Michael and Pat Rogondino have completely revised and expanded their standard manual, Computer Color (0-87701-739-5). A boon for all designers, production people, artists, and printers, Process Color Manual provides an astounding 24,000 colors that match from computer display to printed page. The standard-issue Pantone color books, by comparison, can cost as much as $175 and offer only 3000 colors!
Also included with the book is a handy cardboard mask, white on one side and black on the other, that allows the user to isolate a specific block of color. This sturdy color guide partly came about due to demand from the people who have sworn by the previous edition: Chronicle Books designers. For accuracy, accessability, value, and sheer volume, Process Color Manual is indispensible to everyone who works with graphics and colors.

"We Are The 99 Percent"

I was among the thousands of people cramming into Foley Square Wednesday evening, observing those who had come down to show their support for the Occupy Wall Street movement. I arrived at 4:30, and for the next hour roamed around the park. It had the energy of a festival, a celebration. The air was permeated by the sound of drums. Placards waved about in the air, many of them hastily written with marker on brown corrugated cardboard. And though the rally was organized by labor unions, those with union t-shirts were vastly outnumbered by those with no obvious union affiliation.
I could find no central focal point. If amplified speeches were going on, I could not hear them. Nearer to the drummers people were dancing. Standing on top of the fountain, I found it impossible to get a true sense of the size of the crowd. It was difficult to get it all within view.

This was symbolic, perhaps. The most frequent criticism of the Occupy Wall Street movement is that there is no central organized message. However, looking out over the amorphous crowd that evening, it was very simple to identify what the movement was all about. That is, thousands were gathering here to speak out about economic injustice—injustices dealt to them, their families, and to the entire nation. There was a palpable sense that our democracy is in danger, that the voices of the many are being drowned out by the few: those with vast fortunes and a certain political agenda.

“We are the 99 percent,” the protesters chanted. In contrast, those that make the decisions that affect our lives are the other one percent. They’re the ones telling us that we’re better off if we allow corporations to pollute our air, to ship our jobs overseas, to cut corporate taxes and those on the wealthy. They tell us that we’re better off if we cut health benefits for workers, if we get rid of pensions, if we do away with the social safety net. We’re better off without high-speed rail or universal health care. These things are unattainable, we’re told, because government is out of money. If we raise taxes on the wealthiest to help pay for these things then the whole economy will fail, we’re told.

The crowd at Foley Square wasn’t falling for it.

Student loan debt was a common cause. After all, we were all told that we must go to college to get a good job. For some this is no problem; their parents can simply write a check. For others, loans are the only practical solution. Now many are out of college and are tens of thousands of dollars in debt. There are few jobs to be had and those who haven’t found one are wondering just how they’re supposed to pay all this debt off.

“The banks got bailed out, we got sold out,” the crowd chanted.

These are big, institutional problems that don’t lend themselves to easy answers. The seductive power of the Tea Party is that it offers simple, easy answers. Cut government and cut taxes. Get government out of your life and maybe someday you will be rich. The real answers aren’t going to be that easy.

Earlier that morning a Republican presidential candidate told the protesters that they ought not to blame Wall Street for the fact that they’re not rich. But no one at Foley Square said anything about wanting to become rich. For the former CEO of a fast-food pizza chain this may be a difficult idea to understand. It’s also difficult for New York City’s billionaire mayor to understand. He called the protesters “ridiculous.” This is the same mayor who expresses no concern over the growing gap between the rich and poor in his city.

The crowd at Foley Square wasn’t concerned about amassing riches. They wanted economic security and a say in their political process. They wanted to end the injustice that they see all about them, to eliminate want in the face of greed.

An hour later, looking south on Centre Street, the setting sun reflected off of the silver facade of a new luxury apartment building. A two-bedroom apartment in this building rents for $72,000 a year, a sum greater than many of the attendees’ salaries. And then the crowd began to move forward for the march down to Zuccotti Park. I walked with the chanting crowd in silence. When the march met with those encamped at Zuccotti Park there were cheers. There was dancing. Later a small group tried to storm some barricades. A white shirt officer swung his nightstick at the group. Thousands of cameras captured the moment.

Bussiness card design process

Bussiness card design process

I wanted to show all the time that a simple design can take, over all it was more than 24 hours of design to get to the final thing :

-First i designed my logo with my name, i wanted something neat and legible for it.
1.- On the first red and blue card, I didn't really liked that contrast.
2.-Several people told me it looked gay (and several others told me it was cool and sporty).
3.-No one liked it (no wonder why)
4.-I really liked that one, but I think it didn't went with my personality, too fancy, or futurist, or something like that.
/On the meanwhile I left it for a while and let it rest for 4 weeks/
5.-I decided to try it vertical, crook the logo and extend the lettering so it looked chopped and give it a slim look. I liked the first one, but it reminded me to Fox and its commercials.
6.-Green is not really my color
7.-I liked the drops and the effect i gave them , but i think it could give the impression I worked in commercial or product shots only.
8.-Was ment to be print on a see-through paper, but when I did it, the ink didn't really sticked. (It looks freaking awesome btw)
9.- FINAL .- I thought it should reflect that Im a photographer, my passion for design, portray that im young, dynamic and give the look of something you could wear (like in a t-shirt or a boardshort). I located the contact info on the back with white background and gray letterings.

Hope that you like the final outcome and/or you have enjoyed reading this. Give me your feedback

Big-Time Sports in American Universities

Big-Time Sports in American Universities

For almost a century, big-time college sports has been a wildly popular but consistently problematic part of American higher education. The challenges it poses to traditional academic values have been recognized from the start, but they have grown more ominous in recent decades, as cable television has become ubiquitous, commercial opportunities have proliferated, and athletic budgets have ballooned. Drawing on new research findings, this book takes a fresh look at the role of commercial sports in American universities. It shows that, rather than being the inconsequential student activity that universities often imply that it is, big-time sports has become a core function of the universities that engage in it. For this reason, the book takes this function seriously and presents evidence necessary for a constructive perspective about its value. Although big-time sports surely creates worrying conflicts in values, it also brings with it some surprising positive consequences.

Varsity Green: A Behind the Scenes Look at Culture and Corruption in College Athletics

In Varsity Green, Mark Yost cuts through cliches and common misconceptions to take a hard-eyed look at the current state of college athletics. He takes readers behind the scenes of the conspicuous and high-revenue business of college sports in order to dissect the enormous television revenues, merchandising rights, bowl game payoffs, sneaker contracts, and endorsement deals that often pay state university coaches more than the college president, or even the governor.

Money in college sports is nothing new. But readers will be amazed at the alarming depth and breadth of influence, both financial and otherwise, that college sports has within our culture. Readers will learn how academic institutions capitalize on the success of their athletic programs, and what role sports-based revenues play across campus, from the training room to the science lab. Yost pays particular attention to the climate that big-money athletics has created over the past decade, as both the NCAA's March Madness and the Bowl Championship Series have become multi-billion dollar businesses. This analysis goes well beyond campus, showing how the corrupting influences that drive college athletics today have affected every aspect of youth sports, and have seeped into our communities in ways that we would not otherwise suspect.

This book is not only for the players, policymakers, and other insiders who are affected by the changing economics of college athletics; it is a must-read for any sports fan who engages with the NCAA and deserves to see the business behind the game.

Who could resist, right? I'm one of those suckers who picks up dollar items that I can use for dog photo ops, what can I say? Yes, I got this t-shirt for Leo for a dollar at a Target store a while back. Too cute for words and it was just right for this holiday and his picture this week.

I used my "nifty fifty" which doesn't auto-focus because my camera doesn't have it built in? Anyway, I knew that going in and enjoy using the lens for still shots with the pups. I like how the focus is on his face and I can see the color of his eyes. I'm used to seeing that in photos with Vegas but since his eyes are so small I struggle with it more. I wish the background had been solid and need to figure out a good spot in my house where I can set up backdrops, etc.

A Saint Paddy's day candid...

I ran into a friend of mine the other day while I was walking around downtown. He called me out on the fact that I take a LOT of photos, but post only a small portion of them. He had a good point. I believe that less is more, but I truly could be posting more of my images.

So, I've posted three images today. They all go out to my friend - you know who you are...

Walt's Ride (two of two)

Walt's Ride (two of two)

It was massive. Straight lined, sure of itself, beastly in its presence. I quivered beside it, rubbing the back of my hand along its flawless navy blue paint. Not a spec of dust distorted it. Not a single bubble or orange peel in the paint, no rust on any of the thousands of little chrome pieces, everything just perfect. Better than the showroom floor. Something about this car was unique. It was one off, it was Bill's, but it was more than Bill's. "Well hop on in," Bill said. The top was down, folded back behind the rear seat like melting mocha taffy. I placed my palm on the door and locked my arm at the elbow. I was ready to hop in but in my wind up Bill hollered, "Hey! No, no, no. This isn't any ol’ junker. You treat this car like you'd treat a lady. Open her with only the most delicate hands. Respect her. Know that she needs to familiarize herself with you, as you need to do with her. You can't just go jumping her bones. That's rape. Automobile rape." He winked at me to ease the embarrassment but I couldn't help turning red. The wine was sitting just below the surface and all of my adrenaline was rushing through my body, pushing it out into my skin and clogging my pores with its purple-red toxins.

I opened the passenger side door. I held the entire handle in my hand, my fingers barely coming back to meet with my palm as I clasped it and slowly pushed my thumb down to release the latch. The door popped open and sat obediently inside its mold awaiting my signal to continue falling outwards. I stepped aside and allowed it. What a courteous car. Bred for a king. On the floor was thick and long haired carpet. It wasn't like the synthetic stuff that was coming in most the cars these days, it was real. Nicer than the carpet in our den. I ran my fingers through it, and then touched the cherry wood dashboard above. I took my shoes off before getting in. Bill said I didn't have to, but I needed to. I sat erect in the seat as I imagined a business man would. Its thick rolls of buttermilk leather churned under my back and bum. Parts of my body were suspended in mid air while the others delicately distributed themselves over pleats and piping. Bill snuffed out his cigar on the sidewalk and stepped inside. "A real beauty," he said. "Walt loved this car. When he passed it on to me I staggered with surprise... I think I saw that same stagger in you."

I ran my hand along the remainder of the dash. Hovering it just slightly above the glossy wood finish, feeling the electricity of life buzzing between my clammy palm and this rigid and king-like beast of a car. "Open up the glove box," Bill instructed. I couldn't. It needed a key. "Keys are in your pocket, boy. I swear..." I dug for them, pressing my toes into the floorboard and arching my back like some circus freak. When did these jeans become so restricting? I fumbled with them, even the smallest things about this car were massive and proud. The key's heads so perfectly square and confident, their teeth, shark-like and hungry. I dangled the smallest one from my forefinger and thumb and pushed it into the hole using my other hand as a guide. The heavy ivory and wood door dropped down onto my knees and inside, shining gold in the sun was a placard. "Read that to me, boy." I covered its corners with cupped hands to block out the glare and started: Walter Elias Disney.

I was star struck. Mr. Disney, an icon, and me sitting idle with my 17 year old body in a seat I don't deserve. "The car's yours now, son. I trust you'll take care of it." I'd do more than care for it, I'd worship it. I'd succumb to it. I'd allow it to make an honest man out of me. I'd bare children with it if I could, but for now, I'll drive it, not in vain, I'll drive it with a purpose. I leaned over the console and hugged Uncle Bill. He laughed and pushed me away, got out, re-lit his cigar and walked across the street to Aunt Marianne inside her idling car. I waved to her, and she lowered her chin to me. They drove off and I felt unsure, like they left me with a bigger responsibility than I could handle. What do I do with something this extravagant? Should I wash it? Should I find a garage to park it in? Should I take it for a drive? Yes. I should take it for a drive. The wine has surely worn off by now. A sissy drink anyways. Surely it wouldn't have the gull to stick around for more than an hour.

I ran inside and put on my nicest shirt and jacket. I slicked my hair back and slipped the comb into my back pocket. I tied my shoelaces extra tight and galloped back to the Cadillac. The driver’s seat felt me up. It patted my back and rubbed my shoulders and sent vibrations through the underside of my thighs. It knew how to treat a man. I started her up. She fired in one crank and rocked side to side like a ship in a placid ocean harbor as she warmed up. I hit the gas pedal twice. Her core tore left and then right. What a beautifu

25 Things about me - Tagged

25 Things about me - Tagged

I was tagged by Shannon_Taylor (thanks chica) to list 25 things about me..so here goes.

1. I'm love winter and I miss it desperately. (we have no winter in s. texas) This picture is of the first "snow" my kids have gotten to experience. (it was a 1/2 sheet of ice w/ a dusting of snow on top of it that melted by noon) In s. Texas we don't have sleds...we use rubbermaid lids to sled with. LOL

2. I love black jelly beans. I can eat pounds of them in a sitting. It's an illness.

3. I'm a night owl. I'm 35 and if my family would let me I could still sleep past noon every day.

4. I'm on a diet for the first time in my life. It sucks being in my 30's and not being able to eat like I did when I was in my 20's. what's up with that?

5. I hate watching and going to the movies. I'd rather read or play on the internet.

6. I drive too fast. It finally caught up with me when I got my first speeding ticket in over 16 years a week ago. :(

7. I don't really like the outdoors. I prefer to stay inside and maintain my pasty white complexion.

8. My nails won't grow. They are short and brittle and I hate them. I don't bite them so why won't they grow.

9. I don't watch much TV either but I'm highly addicted to the shows I do watch. Glee, Private Practice and The Event are my faves right now.

10. I love playing and watching sports but these days I mostly watch. Oh, who am I kidding...I haven't played a sport since elementary school.

11. I was a cheerleader. Some people say it's not a sport. Some do. I don't really have an opinion one way or another. I competed my senior year of highschool and won a trip to London to perform in the Lord Mayor of Westminster New Year's Day parade...so cheerleading served a purpose for me. :)

12. I always want to the the best at whatever I do. I guess that means I'm competitive but i'll never admit it so keep it on the DL.

13. I use to think I was really organized but i just opened my desk drawer and I'm pretty sure anyone who saw it would tell you otherwise.

14. I stopped watching Oprah a couple years ago because she always made me feel like a failure of a human being with all her good deeds. She's pretty spectacular.

15. I'm really struggling to find 10 more things to tell you about me.....I don't always like to talk about myself.

16. People think we are from New York because my kids names are Brooklyn, Hudson and Parker (Parker got robbed...we couldn't think of another boy NY name for him...he was going to be Ellis if he was a girl). It was really a fluke that the older two had NY names. We never noticed until someone pointed it out to us.

17. I collect books. I have an addiction to buying books that I'll never read. There are boxes in our attic. I collect vintage Nancy Drew books. I read the entire series as a child.

18. I love to write...hence the super long descriptions of each one of these items.

19. I'm the oldest of 7 children. All my siblings live in Michigan and I'm stuck in TX. (it's not as bad as I let on)

20. I dream big, lofty dreams.

21. I use to have a recurring nightmare when I was young and Annie Lennox was in it. Random...considering I was only about 4 when I had these dreams.

22. I love nothing more than a quiet dark house and a glass of wine. peaceful bliss.

23. My hair has been every color and length imaginable over my lifetime.

24. I have a tattoo and I go back and forth on having it removed, having it turned into something else or completely getting another one.

25. I could live in jeans and novelty tee shirts every single day if allowed to.

Pomegranate Central Coast Wine Country: Illustrations by Michael Schwab Panoramic Boxed Note Cards (Pack of 2)

Few artists have captured the spirit and mood of California as beautifully and succinctly as Michael Schwab. Whether it's his posters for Golden Gate National Parks or his illustrations for Sunset Books' California Wine Country, a selection of which have been reproduced here, Schwab reveals the soul of his beloved state through the judicious use of silhouette, color, and scale. California is my muse, he says, just as it was for many of the graphic artists and painters around the turn of the last century. Inspiration is everywhere--the redwoods, the lakes, the mountains, the vineyards. And the people--the winemakers, the organic farmers and ranchers, the artists and designers--there are so many heroes in California. Everyone inspires everyone else. I try to create images that are strong, but discreet in their power; dramatic, without giving too much away; romantic in their message.

Exact replica of the "Stop Pre" t-shirt emblem worn by Steve Prefontaine, July 9, 1972

Exact replica of the

The famous STOP PRE logo that fans wore as a joke because everyone knew nothing could stop Pre!. Pre even wore the emblem. Only 26 were made.

This is an exact replica, including font letter size and spacing, and proportion of letters to the red sign. I made it by digitally drawing it over an image of the emblem from one of the 26 original Stop Pre t-shirts that were made for the predicted win by Pre of the 5000m Olympic trials, July 9. 1972. The emblem was very large as worn by Ore, and the "original" size of this emblem replica selected from the "Actions" menu above will give you the version that mirrors the approximate original size.

The story of the famous Stop Pre t-shirt was recounted in a column by Sports Editor Blaine Newnham in the July 10, 1972, issue of the Eugene Register-Guard:

----------

Saturday it was Brian Oldfield, the colorfully competent shot putter, who added that something extra. Sunday it was a bunch of guys wearing "Stop Pre" T-shirts.

"The idea was hatched during the decathlon," said Bob Hersh, a New York City attorney. "It was all in fun . . . nothing against Pre. It was just our answer to the "Go Pre" shirts and the partisan crowd here.

"The shirts were made up using a silk screen process in the basement of a Eugene resident who must remain nameless."

The Eugene resident was Tom Gillespie, who turned out 26 of the "Stop Pre" shirts, one of which was worn by Gerry Lindgren while he was warming up for the 5,000 meter final. (top left corner photo]

"We're Pre fans," said Tom's brother, John. "In fact, my brother wouldn't wear one during the race because he's such a fan. We go to all the dual meets and everything."

Most of the people wearing them were the workers from Track & Field News. [top photo 2nd from left]

The magazines' managing editor, Dick Drake, apparently originated the idea.

"It was our intention," continued John Gillespie, "to make some T-shirts with the words 'New York Jerk' on them. We were going to have a steeplechase pit and a tape measure on the front. [ed. I guess you had to be there]

"But we were persuaded by Dick Drake and Bob Hersh to make the "Stop Pre" shirts instead. It was just for fun."

It wasn't too funny during the race when the locals discovered the group in the press box wearing the inflamatory shirts. In Pre country, that type of action can get a man in trouble.

The Go's conquered the Stop's on the track and then all was well when Prefontaine accepted one of the shirts from John Gillespie after the race. [top photo 3rd from left, Pre takes victory lap top photo 4th and 5th from left]

"I can have this?" asked Pre.

"Do you want it?" replied Gillespie.

"For sure," said Pre.

They may have a better chance of Stopping Pre in a Eugene basement than they will in Munich.

print screening t shirts - Screening: Evidence

Screening: Evidence and practice

Screening: Evidence and practice

Screening is the routine testing of populations to identify individuals who may have a particular medical condition or disease. It is carried out by both government and private organisations with the aims of: better prognosis/outcome for individuals; to protect society from contagious disease; to allow rational allocation of resources; to allow selection of healthy individuals; and for research purposes. About ?500 million is spent on screening each year in Britain alone, and it is an issue that has relevance in health systems and for the general public and media.

For many years, screening was practised without debate, but in the 1960s serious challenges were raised about standard screening procedures. Benefits of screening must be judged against negative side-effects, and concern was raised about potential and actual harm arising when people without a health problem received dangerous and unnecessary investigations and treatments as a result of 'routine' screening tests. Controversy raged and only now 50 years later, is there widespread recognition that quality assured service delivery and proper consumer information are essential. In addition to debate over health risks, the cost-effectiveness of such results also has to be considered, making this a highly contested issue.

This book serves as a non-technical, introductory guide to all aspects of screening. The first section deals with concepts, methodology and evidence, explaining what screening is and how to evaluate it. The second section describes practical management, for example how to make policy and how to deliver it to a high quality. It includes many examples and case histories, a glossary to make medical terms accessible to the non-medic, and each chapter concludes with a summary and self-test questions. Although reference is made to the UK NHS, a world leader in screening, the book remains internationally relevant as the principles, knowledge and skills of screening are applicable in any setting. The controversies, paradoxes, uncertainties and ethical dilemmas of screening are explained in a balanced way. Muir Gray and Angela Raffle have been at the forefront of achieving improvements in screening over recent years, and they bring their wealth of experience to this essential text.

John and Amy Harper had a daugher Lucy among thier children, who married Benjamin Rose. I am descended from them. Here is information on how the Harpers played a role in this battle, and recent discoveries of confederate gravesites on the grounds.

John and Amy Harper were a middle¬class farm couple who resided near the village of Bentonville prior to and during the Civil War. John's family originated in Virginia, where his great-uncle, Robert Harper, established a ferry and mill that eventually developed into the community known as Harpers Ferry. In addition to serving as a clerk in the county court system, John Harper also farmed approximately 100 of his 825 acres of land, primarily growing corn, peas, beans, and sweet potatoes. An unspecified portion of Harper's forest land was utilized in the production of turpentine, which was distilled from the rosin of pine trees. The family was active in the local Disciples of Christ Church, and so donated some of their land for the site of the Mill Creek Christian Church. Sometime between 1855 and 1859, John Harper constructed a new, two-story frame home for his growing family of nine children.

The Harpers had little time to enjoy their new home before the dark clouds of civil war disrupted the family's peaceful existence. Although eldest son John, Jr., an ordained minister in the Disciples of Christ Church, remained near his family during the Civil War, their second-oldest son enlisted in the Confederate army in 1861 at age 16. Martin was wounded in the Battle of South Mountain, Maryland, in September 1862, but remained in the army until the end of the war.

In the spring of 1865, the suffering of war literally came to the Harpers' front door. On March 19, 1865, the Battle of Bentonville erupted barely one mile east of their home. As the battle developed, Confederate attacks overran large portions of Union lines, and forced Union field hospitals to seek safer locations. Surgeons of the Union's Fourteenth Army Corps arrived at the Harper House and commandeered the structure for use as a field hospital. Its location met the standards of the Letterman Plan, for it was located in what was considered a safe distance one mile from the front lines.

John and Amy, along with the six children still living at home, were forced to take refuge in the upstairs rooms of the house while surgeons employed the downstairs rooms as makeshift operating theaters. "A dozen surgeons and their attendants in their shirt sleeves stood at rude benches," wrote one Union commander, "cutting off arms and legs and throwing them out of the windows where they lay scattered on the grass. The legs of the infantrymen could be distinguished from those of the cavalry by the size of their calves, as the march of 1,000 miles had increased the size of one and diminished the size of the other."? There were at this time no antibiotics to stop infections, and so the only way to prevent gangrene from killing patients was to amputate shattered arms and legs. But despite the screams, the piles of severed limbs, and the smell, the Harper family refused to leave their home.

When the battle was over, the Union surgeons removed their wounded from the home, but left behind in the Harpers' care 45 wounded Confederate soldiers. These men were given the best the family could provide. John Jr. later recalled that his parents had acted as "nurses, surgeons, commissaries, chaplains and undertakers. My mother fed them, washed their wounds, pointed them to the Saviour, closed their eyes when all was over, and helped to bury their uncoffined bodies as tenderly as she could." John Jr. joined his parents at the Harper House, helping them comfort the wounded and dying of both armies. Evidence suggests that 26 of the wounded Confederates were eventually removed from the house by Confederate surgeons, but 19 men succumbed to their wounds and were buried by the family.

After Sherman's army continued its march to Goldsboro, Confederate cavalry units returned to the Bentonville area to picket the roads in the vicinity. Scouts from one of these regiments, the First Kentucky, were the first to discover that wounded Confederate soldiers had been left in the home of John and Amy Harper. One week after the battle, the letter below was directed to Confederate General Johnston's headquarters calling attention to the plight of the wounded at Harper House.

Lt. Col. Anderson,
Assistant Adjutant-Gen.:

Run-D.M.C. - Greatest Hits

No Description Available
No Track Information Available
Media Type: CD
Artist: RUN DMC
Title: GREATEST HITS
Street Release Date: 09/10/2002
Domestic
Genre: RAP/HIP HOP

Is Run-DMC the most important group of the past 25 years? Well, if you believe that the rise of hip-hop is the most significant musical development in a quarter century, what other conclusion can you draw? Though they may not have been responsible for the birth of rap, the Hollis, Queens, trio represents the genre's coming of age. They were the ones who brought what was largely a regional street phenomenon to the masses. The rhymes, the beats, the style, the attitude--Run-DMC introduced it all to the world. Focusing mostly on the group's first three albums--each of them a cornerstone of rap music--this 18-track collection is a reminder of a time when rap enjoyed a kind of childlike innocence: their boasts are forceful but not angry; the beats are simple but exciting; the overall effect (fueled by heavy-metal riffs) is edgy and aggressive, but not violent or destructive. But most of all, it's fun. In the 1990s, rap artists would take Run-DMC's ideas to wide extremes, but the roots of this next generation--gangsta rap's street realism, political rap's social agendas, rock-rap's antagonism--are found right here. Run-DMC--like almost all pioneers from Elvis to Louis Armstrong--suffered a period of irrelevancy when they were looked upon as quaint or outdated, but, their time will come. Rest assured, this is not '80s retro kitsch. --Marc Greilsamer

Graduate School Office Self Portrait - 1983

Graduate School Office Self Portrait - 1983

I took this self portrait in my office at the University of Notre Dame Physics building. This is my typically messy desk. I pretended I was reading something because everyone knows I can't read!

I think this was taken in the fall of 1983 and I would have been in the writing stage of my thesis at that time. However, I see no indications of writing output on the desk, so it makes me wonder if I have the year correct. It is possible that this was taken during a period where I stopped writing to do some additional numerical calculations for my thesis. The one obvious thing recognizable on the desk is my copy of "Quantum Mechanics" by Messiah. The squirt bottle perched precariously on the edge of the desk was probably filled with ethanol and when it wasn't used to clean o-rings, I used it to squirt silverfish that had invaded the room (probably because of all the stacks of computer paper lining the floors), which would instantly die when immersed in the liquid.
