A small format film, with an image size of 24 x 36mm available in 12, 24 or 36 exposures. It is the most commonly used film size, but does not offer the quality of medium or large format, because this small negative must be enlarged quite a bit in the darkroom loosing it's clarity and sharpness.

Canon Powershot A590 IS

I've been using this a lot lately, since it is all about convenience and delivers great quality. I thought it has earned a spot in my equipment set.

Since it uses AA batteries, I'm almost always in walking distance of fresh power for it. It's small enough to easily fit in the pocket of a winter coat, and it lives the rest of the time in a small case in my messenger bag. The manual exposure mode on it works well enough for adjusting the exposure when the compensation control isn't enough. The IS feature really does help, which is good because it is noisy at moderate and high ISO. I usually leave it at 80.

The last few shots from this I've posted were processed from RAW images, a feature unlocked by the 3rd party CHDK firmware. CHDK does get you RAW, but it slows the camera bootup significantly, and (obviously) writing the files to the card takes a lot longer. For most shots, the JPGs this camera produces internally from the raw sensor output are pretty darn good, so I may not use CHDK on a regular basis going forward. As I mentioned before, this camera is all about convenience.

Joby Tripod and New Camera Case.

Seeing as my point-and-shoot cameras always end up getting rather beat up since I carry them around in my purse all the time, I finally decided to get myself a small camera case.

Although I could really use a tripod for my DSLR, I decided to purchase a Joby Gorillapod for my point-and-shoot. It's a small, flexible tripod that can be used to attach to things to make a shake-free photo just about anywhere. I have yet to give it a whirl, but I like how it is really small and seems like it would be fairly portable.

Three Kinds of Channel Strips

Two Unique Equalization Formats

Channels 1-8 feature the same world-renowned 3-band Active equalization that you'll find on the 1604-VLZ3. Tremendous resources went into optimizing the center points of these mic channel equalizers, with the Lows at 80Hz and the Highs at 12kHz. It might not be a common case, but my first camera was Nikon F2 Photomic. My father bought me the Nikon more than thirty years ago, although he was not a rich man. The Nikon was too good for me at that time (probably still now), and I could not effectively utilize the camera. I did not use it very much (another reason was its weight, it is very heavy), later I bought much cheaper compact film and digital cameras to take snap shots. But since then I felt a vague sense of guilt that I have not used such a high-quality camera much.

This spring I bought my third compact digital camera (Canon Powershot G10). I began to really like the camera, and I started taking photos constantly and joined Flickr. My sense of guilt about the Nikon was growing, as I take photos by myself and see photos of others at Flickr. Finally the last weekend I took out the Nikon from a drawer, and observed it carefully for the first time in about twenty five years. Although the light seal gaskets spoiled, the mirror, prism and lens seemed to be OK. I cleaned the inside, and put batteries and a film. And, I went outside and took some test shots. Behavior of the exposure meter was slightly awkward, but let's see what happens. Anyway, now I feel relieved a little bit.

I was working late one evening, when I worked in Glasgow, and I saw the young artists creating this image on the wall in the back lane.
I wanted so badly to take their picture while they worked (while they were disguised, no doubt) as it would have been a perfect shot but I knew they would run away as soon as I opened the back door.
I keep thinking that the lower line of the jaw is the mouth line and the black lips are actually the moustache. However, I do like the overall look of this piece.
I took the picture as sneakily as I could from the back window, with no flash, in the darkness. The camera I used was my little, Nikon, digital compact.

Smiling Stereo Face - Jack with Stereo View Camera - c. 1976

In 1976 we created a large exhibition of vintage stereo views of Maryland pared with Wheatstone viewers with color prints of the same locations in the 1970s. We adapted a 5X7 view camera with a new lens board holding the lens assembly from a Kodak folding stereo camera and a septum. Jack was focusing the camera at a group picnic and put his hat on the top of the camera while he was under the dark cloth. Someone took this picture but did not sign the print. The bellows were a bit chancy so we always wrapped them in a dark cloth. A fold under the lens board makes a perfect smile.

The other day, I got a wild hair up my ass because I wanted to get some photos in the rain without soaking my D40, so I scrounged and scrounged and finally found my old Action Touch.
Nikon made these in the late 80's and they were really pretty awesome. Matter of fact, according to Philip Greenspun (I found on the web):
"If you can find a Nikon Action Touch, you might be surprised at how good it was. This camera has a very high quality 35/2.8 lens and autofocus above water. Underwater, you set the subject distance with a convenient dial. There is a nice big switch that turns the built-in flash on or off.

The Action Touch sold for about $150 in the late 1980s, after which Nikon took it off the market and no company ever made a similar camera. The Japanese concluded that nobody is intelligent enough to focus a camera manually. All the cheap underwater cameras introduced after the Action Touch were fixed focus underwater and came with lower quality lenses."

Seems to me I recall it being more than $150, but then again $150 was a shitpot of money back then...

Anyway, I bought a roll of Ilford Delta 400 B&W film because the girl (yes, she was a 'girl') at the camera store had never heard of Plus-X.

One of the first manual focus lenses I ever bought, and a bargain at ?10 if I remember correctly.

It's a very good lens, maybe not a great one like the legendary Series1 lenses, but still a very good walk about lens for the money.

This one is made by the Kobori Company in Japan, the serial number begins with 77, but there are other Vivitars of this range from other manufacturers, apparently some better than others. ( Kobori is ok though )
It's heavy, it's big, and some people won't like the one touch zoom, but the results are remarkably good.
Well worth buying at the right price.

Polaroid Big Swinger 3000

Another vintage camera that once belonged to my grandparents, it's been sitting in a box for the last several years. Produced from 1968-1970, originally retailed for $24.95. Only accepts 3000 speed B/W film, which Fuji still makes (Fuji FP-3000B).

Maybe I'll take it down to Dixie Square one day... you probably could've bought one of these new at the Watland Camera Shop.

UPDATE: Killed in action on April 5, 2011. Was in my backpack, and it fell off a bench at McDonalds. A measly 1.5-foot fall cracked the body beyond repair, causing light leaks. Rest in peace.

Samsung NV10

I recently acquired a Samsung NV10 point & shoot camera from a friend who just upgraded cameras and didn't need it any more. It is an interesting camera as it has a slide button interface which is unlike anything I have ever used before. It has quite a bit of manual control for a point & shoot and hey it was free. There are a few problems with it (the date and time seem to be permanently watermarked on the images... I have tried turning it off in the settings but it won't let me) but nothing too major and for a quick camera to take snapshots with, I am quite pleased. I chose this rather boring photo of Stevie to upload just mainly because I want to see what the exif data displays like here on Flickr.

Snowy snowy night! About two weeks ago, the daytime temperature was about +20 C like summer. Just before taking this photo, I was walking around in a severe -40 C wind chill (my estimate) outside downtown. So the mild gusts shown here were like a tropical breeze in comparison.
