Latte Brown and Cream Madhatter
This is the second madhatter i've made since the Planet Cake course. It is the first paid one, the first one i did was for my nephew JJ.
The cakes were carved and ganached on Thursday, covered in fondant, stripes etc on Friday. The top tier was tricky to do, the first try at covering the fondant split. I took it off and tried again. It didnt work, but i couldnt take it off cause it was stuck. I then did a second layer in two pieces. Two pieces when there is a bow on top is definetly the way to go. The ribbon that goes across covers the seam
I took some quick pics at home, on my dining room table, with the plan to take nice pictures the venue when i set it up on the table.
After arriving there, i went and asked for assistance, the place where i had to park my car was very far from the venue, a lovely lady came out with a trolley and took the cake away, i asked if she needed me to set it up for her, and she said no. Oh well this is the only pic i have, and others of similar quality.
The cake is dark choc mudcake, moistened with rasberry syrup and filled with raspberry ganache. I simmered 500gms of raspberries with some water and sugar, i drained the raspberries and used the liquid as the syrup and the pulp went straight into the ganache. It was very very moist and yummy and RICH!!!
Pic 15 - on the dining room table
This is *closer* to the wall color, but it's too dark. Bah.
Nov.10 - we don't have the cat tent anymore, and the blue dresser has been moved to a different wall. This room is mostly filled with wine-making equipment.

COFFEE TABLE MEASUREMENTS : COFFEE TABLE
Coffee Table Measurements : 10 Foot Dining Room Table : Wholesale Pub Tables
Coffee Table Measurements
- low table where magazines can be placed and coffee or cocktails are served
- A low table, typically placed in front of a sofa
- A coffee table, also called a cocktail table, is a style of long, low table which is designed to be placed in front of a sofa, to support beverages (hence the name), magazines, feet, books (especially coffee table books), and other small items to be used while sitting, such as coasters.
- (Coffee Tables) While any small and low table can be, and is, called a coffee table, the term is applied particularly to the sets of three or four tables made from about 1790; of which the latter were called 'quartetto tables'.

January 7: ChiGi
Wrecking Ball Ethiopia Sidama Ardi natural (12/12/2010... time to buy some new coffee!)
brewed with a ChiGi collapsable silicone dripper. Takahiro pouring kettle.
38.6 grams of coffee
20.15 oz (571 g) of brew water
brew time: 4 min 10 sec
Resulting brew strength: 1.51% TDS
MojoToGo says 19.61% extraction yield
HOWEVER... I brewed this too slow. At 4m10s, I only had 16 oz of water in. I think I poured slower than I should have because I cut down the #4 filter a little too small (as you can see in the photo) because I wanted to be able to pour close to the top of the coffee. I was therefore too tentative with my pour, which slowed things down a lot. So... at the end of the brew, I added some "bypass" water. 4.05 oz. The measurements above are based on the bypassed final brew product.
Trish gives it a thumbs UP! "It's a little bit thin though and it tastes a little old, but I think it's pretty good. The flavor is good! Chocolatey, molassasey, fruity..."
From the pics I've posted, I'm sure that people love the collapsable/portable nature of it. However, my favorite thing about it is that it's silicone rubber. This dripper exhibits the best thermal insulation of any dripper I've ever encountered!
Oh... and note the Technivorm-branded paper filters! Found them at Sur La Table earlier this week.

Aluminum Folding Camp Table
- The chemical element of atomic number 13, a light silvery-gray metal
- a silvery ductile metallic element found primarily in bauxite
- Aluminum was the second album from NYC band Gods Child, littered with damaged guitars, distressed mellotron, and raw vocals. Produced by Tim Palmer (who has worked with such acts as Pearl Jam, Sponge, and Mission UK) the album features a spaced-out aura, solid musicianship and soaring sonics.
- Aluminium ( ) or aluminum ( ) is a silvery white member of the boron group of chemical elements. It has the symbol Al and its atomic number is 13. It is not soluble in water under normal circumstances.
- (of a piece of furniture or equipment) Be able to be bent or rearranged into a flatter or more compact shape, typically in order to make it easier to store or carry

- Bend (something flexible and relatively flat) over on itself so that one part of it covers another
- foldable: capable of being folded up and stored; "a foldaway bed"
- protein folding: the process whereby a protein molecule assumes its intricate three-dimensional shape; "understanding protein folding is the next step in deciphering the genetic code"
- a set of data arranged in rows and columns; "see table 1"

- temporary living quarters specially built by the army for soldiers; "wherever he went in the camp the men were grumbling"
- providing sophisticated amusement by virtue of having artificially (and vulgarly) mannered or banal or sentimental qualities; "they played up the silliness of their roles for camp effect"; "campy Hollywood musicals of the 1940's"

Spares box
I got this case from work, it was going to be tossed out. Made from Kydex and aluminum, It makes a great spares box. In it is everything I need to replace my Turbo with the Calmini header and go back to a modified stock configuration, a spare front cv axle ( I only need one since modifying the front end) a spare rear axle with new bearings, a spare front hub with fresh bearings ( and the special tool to remove /install it) spare pump for my turbo system that will work for both oil scavange or coolant pumping, spare belts, upper and lower radiator hoses, complete ignition, plugs, wire set, rotor and cap, coil and ignitor module, a spare maf sensor, and a few other important items. I was origanally going to mount this box on my roof rack, but then thought about what a pain in the ass it would be to get at it because of it's full weight, which is near 80lbs. I decided to keep the heavy items as low as possible, so in the back it goes it goes with the fridge. All the lightweight items, folding camp chairs and table, tent, sleeping bags and other light items will go in a water proof bag on the roof rack.

Dining Room Table Restoration
Dining Room Table
When we moved, the legs from my great-grandmother’s dining room table shattered. I had gathered all the pieces of wood into a pillow cover. On Saturday I started gluing the pieces from the six feet together and clamping them tight. By Sunday I was able to start gluing and clamping the “pillars” back together, as well as sawing off, redrilling, and replacing the wood pegs to attach the feet to the legs.
I’m pleased that the breaks all look like hairline cracks and the table is holding together…
Wendy and I keep glancing over at it – we expect all of a sudden to hear cracking noises and the table to fall to the ground.
Left: Final gluing and clamping of two feet to the legs.
Middle: Table: no added leaves, six chairs.
Right: Detail of legs underneath.

She's mad at me
My dog gets really frequent ear infections. The vet gave me some ear cleaner stuff that you are supposed to squirt in her ears a couple times a week. I did it for the second time right before I took this picture. When she saw the bottle she wedged herself under the coffee table. I got her out and put in the cleaner. She then ran and squeezed herself in the about 8 inches behind the leather chair and the wall, with her head smooshed up against the red ottoman. She was mad all night.

I am certain that I am not the only individual who has arrived at the doorsteps of Via Allegro only to be taken aback by it's rather lowbrow location (it's in a strip mall close to the airport, sandwiched between an UPS and a Staples) and its, shall we label it, loud exterior. However, noting the constant mention of this fine establishment on the top ten lists in Toronto dining, I knew it was a must to press on and discover for myself what excellent food lied behind this garish exterior.
Entering the restaurant, things started to fall into place, although the large dining room was a tad boisterous, given that it was a lazy late Monday night crowd, our seating around 10pm was graciously received even though we were close to the kitchen's last call. The large glass enclosed wine cellar, that faced the main entrance, is plastered with plaques and posters of the numerous awards and recognitions the restaurant has received, including the Wine Spectator's Grand Award, four diamonds from the CAA/AAA, Whisky Magazine's award for the best whisky list in the world, the Solid Gold Spoon for the best risotto in Toronto (2003), to name a few. At the table, a huge 4-inch binder holds the largest wine and spirits list that I've encountered, and even boasts of 750 scotch sel¬ections and 200 grappas that is found lining half of the restaurant's walls.
Our friendly waiter was cheerful and helpful, especially noting that we were first-timers who were overwhelmed with the breadth of the menu. Divided into the Signature Seasonal that's offered a la carte or as a thematic tasting menu and the Classic Italian from 1996-2006 containing Via's clientele favourites listed by year and version number, we note that there are special highlights for the Platinum Artisanal steak and veal chops. There is even an informational section at the back of the menu detailing the Platinum Artisanal designation, the degree of doneness for the meats, the significance of the veal served at Via and as well the availability for purchase of the 50- or 100-year-old balsamics used that ranged in the four digits. The latter was a tempting suggestion to round out a great dining experience, but perhaps worthy of consideration on our next visit (when the pocketbook allows for such extravagant purchases).
At first I thought to dive into the "Classic Dishes for Two" since there were two of us. The "Extravaganza Classico (from 2001)" sounded perfect as it appeared to have the greatest sampler of Via's repertoire, showcasing a whole Nova Scotia lobster, Platinum Beef petite filet mignon, rack of lamb, seabass, jumbo black tiger shrimp and large sea scallops, along with a preserved lemon and arugula risotto, potatoes, vegetables and sauces for $98.95 per person, however our pleasant waiter advised against it unless we were "very, very hungry." (Anyone who knows me, know that I'm up for this challenge, as I feed like the hungry hungry hippo without being hungry hungry, but I must admit the concerned look that appeared with the statement that it was "a lot of food" did scare me.) In retrospect, after ordering a duo of appetizers and entrees, and knowing our resultant fullness, I am glad that we listened to his wise recommendation. I then noted that there was the “Moody Chef” tasting menu ($89.95) created by chef Lino Collevecchio, but unfortunately the chef was not in that night. Instead we went with our gut (literally) and were treated to one of the best meals I've had in 2007.
Highly recommended. I can appreciate the reason for great recognition of this long standing institution, which deals greatly with the quality (and quantity) of the food offered. For unobtrusive and affable service, this is the place to bring friends and family for any social gathering, without feeling the guilt of enjoying your night out too much or the discomfort of feeling out of place. If only it wasn't located so far away…

CURIO COFFEE TABLE - COFFEE TABLE
Curio Coffee Table - Antique Hall Tables - 45 Inch Round Dining Table.
Curio Coffee Table
- A low table, typically placed in front of a sofa
- low table where magazines can be placed and coffee or cocktails are served
- A coffee table, also called a cocktail table, is a style of long, low table which is designed to be placed in front of a sofa, to support beverages (hence the name), magazines, feet, books (especially coffee table books), and other small items to be used while sitting, such as coasters.
- (Coffee Tables) While any small and low table can be, and is, called a coffee table, the term is applied particularly to the sets of three or four tables made from about 1790; of which the latter were called 'quartetto tables'.
- something unusual -- perhaps worthy of collecting
- Curio was a Japanese pop rock. They were best known to Western audiences for their song Kimi ni Fureru Dake De, which was used as the third opening theme for the popular anime Rurouni Kenshin.
- A curio is a predominantly glass cabinet with a metal or wood framework used to display collections of figurines that share some common theme. Most curios have glass on each side or a mirror at the back and glass levels to show the entire figurine.
- A rare, unusual, or intriguing object
Gorgeous Mutant Paramecium
This gorgeous cream colored paramecium is the spectacular result of recent genetic engineering. "Paramecium Placida Noregretsia" is at present the largest known species. At 3 inches in length, this paramecium's humongous dimensions have resulted in a considerable slowing down of its unique 360 degree escape response. So it swims placidly and fearlessly in semicircles, laconically checking out plankton and other food sources.
It is not only slower, but even more gorgeous than earlier species due to an unusual DNA recombinant grafting from Akoya oysters. Which has resulted in an exquisite mutation. Tiny pearl-like excrescences dot the margins of this lovely creature like a minature Mikimoto necklace
This Paramacium Placida will be a lovely addition to the detritus accumulating in your display shelves or coffee table. If you choose to display it in a more intimate way, it can be outfitted with a fine quality Aanraku bail in silver or gold tones. Then it can be worn as a striking pendant. The bail will be applied gently and poses no danger or distress to the Paramecium at all.
Warning: If you have already purchased an Amoeba, please be aware that the Paramecium Pacida is NOT suitable for food and may actually threaten or harass your Amoeba. For a suitable food source, please see NoRegretsy's "Three Dear Little Paramecium".

OAK SOFA TABLES - OAK SOFA
Oak sofa tables - Primitive sofa table
Oak Sofa Tables
- A sofa table is not unlike a Pembroke table, having similar folding flaps which are hinged and can be raised and held by concealed brackets. The flaps are, however, at the narrow ends of the top, and the supports of the table vary in design; they are never straight, as in the Pembroke.

- (in drop-leaf table (furniture))

Virtual Daydreaming
Isn't this a fantastic shot? My friend Nathan said it was something
out of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" where martial artists run up
bamboo trees waving in the wind. Actually it is a little girl in a
maple tree in the Imperial Garden of Kyoto. She was put up there by
her father for a photo op, but I captured it too. Like something out
of a dream... that's what I've been feeling like for the past week.
Wednesday was Labor Day here. We got the day off from school. Thursday
was Thanksgiving in the USA, so I called up my expat friends Nathan
and Leon to make a meal of it. I'd heard that the Sheraton Kobe was
offering a Thanksgiving Buffet on Wednesday. Nathan came 3 hours by
train and Leon came down from his mountain apartment to Rokko Island
for the meal. It was touted as a Thanksgiving buffet by the American
coordinator for the hotel. So we had some assumptions about the menu.
As we walk to our table, past the buffet, we can't spot the chef with
cutlery in hand to carve a turkey under heat lamps. No yams, mashed
potatoes. Nothing. Well, not nothing. But nothing familiar to
Thanksgiving. It looks just like a pan-Asian cuisine. We ask the
waiter. "Oh, that's for dinner." Great. So much for delivering a taste
of home to my friends. The waiter comes back and says cryptically,
"they're preparing the turkey now." Leon interpreted that to mean,
"for dinner." But finally the waiter gestures over towards the buffet.
We see it. Arranged in slices like silver dollars are "turkey with
cranberry sauce." This the sole Thanksgiving item in the buffet. We
laugh it off and get 4 plates of food by the end of the meal. So we
got our money's worth for the buffet, but not what our stomachs were
expecting.
I haven't been forthcoming with my blogs on schedule because school
has been getting quite intense over the past two weeks. Finishing up
the term. I have been working hard to leave my lesson planning at
school so that I can enjoy an evening at home without more work to get
back to. I finally did that on Thursday and felt on top of the world.
That feeling lasted until Friday morning when I neglected something in
the lesson plan and threw my co-teacher and students for a loop when I
deviated from the LP to fit it in. That sent me into a spiral of
frustration that I only got out of Saturday evening. Perhaps it was
exacerbated by lack of sleep during this week when I've been staying
late at work and then staying up late at home.
Staying up late at home has been induced by my love for technology and
gadgetry. I have recently become more interested in podcasting because
I have found out it is possible for me to produce a podcast almost for
free. So I've been surfing the web learning how to do it and testing
out software applications to do it. I don't have much of an angle for
a show right now: there's already EFL teachers in Japan with a
podcast. In due time, I'll have something. I just need to get on top
of my teaching first.
And the countdown clock has begun for my Christmas return to the
States. So I think that is making me think of places anywhere but
here. However, nowness is a good quality. I need to be focused on the
now instead of worrying/longing for the future. That will take care of
itself. Thanks for reading and I'll be back next week!
Skies of Bombay
Mom and I ate at the Bombay Restaurant in Maple Ridge on Jan 1/10. The lunch buffet was under $10 each and had hot dishes (as in temperature) as well as salad makings. The light above our table was so striking.

Day 323 Sewing
Sarah and Cam are having us at their house for Thanksgiving and they needed a tablecloth for the beautiful huge oak table they refinished last year. Sarah bought some nice fabric and Cam has a portable sewing machine but they weren't sure of how to go about hemming the fabric. So I traded some dinner for some lessons. Yum. P1240051

Five years ago: Californian Route 1
Further along route 1 is San Simeon, where the Hurst Castle is. I had planned to call in, as it one of the highlights on the coast. However, as the full parking lot showed, almost everyone else in California thought coming here would be a good idea. I parked up; and in the lobby; I found that it cost $24 plus tax to go round; and it was a guided tour; it also looked like I would not get on a tour for quite some time. In the past few weeks, I had seen many rich men’s playthings, and I had enough of it; let alone go round the richest of the lot to see what gaudy bangles this man had acquired; the fact that Citizen Kane was based on him was neither here nor there. It was already three in the afternoon, and I had a way to go before I found somewhere to stay. I bought three postcards, and was charged nearly $3, I asked if she had made a mistake; apparently not.
I drove on to the town of Cambria, where I wanted to find a post office so I could send some of my stuff back home. I found the post office, though the teller was not helpful; I could not use the box I wanted as it was for use in the US only; but she produced a box from behind the counter I could have for free; though I had to buy a roll of tape to seal it with. She read out a list of posting options; and she thought I should choose surface mail, which would get it there by Christmas; no, sorry the end of September. So, I lied on the customs form about how much it was worth to avoid tax when it got to Britain.
South of Cambria, route 1 ran pretty straight; and the weather perked up. I dropped the roof at the post office more in hope than that the weather was ok. But soon I was driving through rolling hills, the grass turned brown by months of constant sunshine.
Soon, the road rejoined 101, and headed south a six lane freeway. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied a motel; it looked grand enough, and big enough to suggest they might have rooms. I turned off the highway and headed towards the motel; little was I to suspect that this was going to be an experience. The Madonna Motel has a long history; apparently, it was John Wayne’s favourite place, as the steaks were supposed to the best in California. And then there was the decor; but more of that later. Do a Google search for it, and see the horror of the decor for yourselves; it is made of stone, and in most places made to look like a grotto. And then there are the rooms; each one has a theme, and in reception you are presented with a list of free rooms, and a board with pictures of said rooms and you pick the one you like most. By this point, I really did not care, and chose the first room they had free. I drove over to the block where my room was, parked up, and opened the door; it was the golf room. But, the only thing that made it the golf room were the prints on the wall. I got my case, and then had to try and work out how to get all my stuff in the case before Saturday morning.
I laid on my bed and watched some TV, mainly baseball.
Later on, once it was dark, I thought I would go and have a drink, and a good meal. Once in the main building, I found my way to the bar; it was fine, and quiet. What I did not realise that the crowds from the Hurst castle were dining here tonight, and I should have booked a table. The decor was really shocking, kitsch is the word; tasteless might be another. I had a couple of beers, and then thought I would go into the restaurant to see about some food; only to be told there would be a wait of an hour; oh well, aback to the bar. At some point, nature called; and I followed the signs to the stairs and went to the basement. The fact there was a fountain at the bottom of the stairs I did not think unusual; but the giant clam shells that were the basins in the restrooms were a little unusual. Even more unusual was the waterfall that doubled as a urinal; honestly. And once my table was free, I was greeted by the horror that was the steakhouse. To put it into words is tough; red plush velvet seating, dark red flowery carpet, mirrored walls, gold leaf everywhere, fake plastic trees everywhere and alabaster cherubs hanging from the ceiling. It was really too much to take in. I sat down and thought some sausage starter looked quite good; but when the waitress brought some vegetables and dip, so much that any thought of starter was forgotten. As I ordered steak, I got a free salad as usual; the upshot was that by the time the main course arrived, I was really full.
New Kitchen Dining Set
One of the problems we have is the kitchen tables were always too long, and you were always bumping into it trying to get around to go down the hall to the other side of the house.
So I sold the set on Craig's List, then found this round table that has a drop leaf on each side. So it snugs up to the wall, but isn't as wide. So now you can get around the table and go down the hallway without any obstruction. The table has four matching chairs, so we can pull it from the wall if we want to seat four people in the kitchen.

Jenny Lind's Table
The tour guide is standing on a huge slab of rock that is called Jenny Lind's Table. In the good old days (i.e. the 1800s) the tours were so long that the tour guides hauled in food for the visitors to eat. This was one of the "dining rooms." Apparently, the guides would spread out tablecloths and provide a fancy meal and wine for the people on the tour.
Tables
The dining room consisted of taking the benches from the sanctuary outside, placing metal sawhorse-like things at relatively specific intervals, and placing two giant slabs of wood on each set of two to complete the tables.
