He had graduated from Columbia in 1942, prior to joining the army.

Rogelio Alberto Casas Served in the U.S. Army with the 30th Engineering Battalion, Company B, which was tasked with map making. He was originally stationed at Fort Belvoir, then was sent to North Africa to make maps for the invasions of Sicily and Italy, then was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii for the last year of the war.

He had grown up in Spain and had seen combat with the Republican Army against the fascists. He eventually had to escape the country by foot over the Pyranees Mountains after the collapse of the government and made his way to New York. By accident, he had been born in Puerto Rico while his mother was accompanying his father on a business trip and so he had U.S. Citizenship.

He was an artist and had taken a course in cartography before graduating from Columbia University in 1942 so he was assigned to this unit which was heavy with artists, as can be seen from many of his photos. As part of reproducing maps, the unit was able to easily make photo prints. This resulted in Rogelio returning from the war with many hundreds of photos showing personal and cultural scenes from North Africa, the U.S. and Hawaii.

After the terrors of the Spanish Civil War (in which nearly all of his childhood friends were killed) his lot kept getting better. He married Constance Berry, whom he met in New York City, and lived with her at Fort Belvoir until shipping to North Africa. Although he lived in field conditions there, he never had to see combat again. By the time he was stationed in Hawaii, his photos suggest a nearly resort-living environment at Schofield Barracks. He finally returned home to his wife, finished his Doctorate and became a Humanities Professor at Dartmouth for a few years and then the University of New Hampshire at Durham for the majority of his career.

My friend Mike is a big guy. So naturally, he loves the Big Dog clothing line. Most of their shirts show St. Bernards and "tough" sayings like "Big Dogs don't need stop signs" or "If you're with a Big Dog, don't be surprised when we bite" or "Biker Tough though no bike could actually hold my weight." Or something like that, I never paid too much attention.

Aside from the "badass" shirts, they also make really corny movie, TV and pop culture parodies using St. Bernards and really bad dog puns. I got this one for Christmas from Mike, cause he knew I was into Harry Potter at the time.

The Ninth Doctor

I'm a big fan of Doctor Who, so I thought I'd start a series of vector drawings of the eleven (!) different Doctors (so far).

Christopher Eccleston played the Ninth Doctor in 2005.

Sixteen years after the show was canceled, the BBC brought back a new and improved Doctor Who series in 2005. The new series has been going strong now for five seasons and is a huge hit in England, consistently receiving high ratings and generating tons of merchandise.

The SyFy Channel aired the first four seasons here in the States, but opted not to carry it after that. I guess they needed the precious air time for wrestling and shows about men pretending to see ghosts.

The new series finally has a budget that allows them to depict decent looking aliens and other planets. Don’t get me wrong, the old series had its charm, what with its cardboard sets and paper mache monsters, but it’s nice to see the show get the budget it deserves.

When the BBC first announced the show was coming back, fans wondered if the Doctor would be the same one from the old series, or if the show would be getting a reboot. After all, it would be tough to attract a new audience to a show with a 40+ year history, what with all that continuity and baggage.

In the end the producers decided not to go the reboot route, and #9 is the same Doctor we’ve known and loved for years.

The way they brought the series back was nothing short of genius, in my opinion. Since we last saw the Doctor in the TV movie in 1996, his home planet of Gallifrey has been destroyed under mysterious circumstances (which have since been partially explained) and the Doctor is now the Last Of The Time Lords, wandering time and space alone.

This very cleverly leveled the playing field for everyone. Fans who knew the continuity inside and out were as much in the dark about the Doctor's situation as new viewers. It was the perfect was to start the show up again.

Unlike the old series, which would stretch out a story over 4 or 6 half hour episodes, the new series features one story per hour long episode (with the occasional two parter).

I really liked Eccleston’s performance as the Doctor. He was moody, melancholy and guilt ridden (no doubt due to losing his home planet) and was obviously in need of someone like his new companion Rose Tyler to give his life meaning again. Too bad he only stuck around for one season (or “series” to the Brits).

This Doctor wasn't afraid to use force, often utilizing weapons of the era in which he found himself.

Unlike any previous incarnations, Doctor #9 spoke with a distinct Northern English accent. Rose Tyler asked the Doctor, "If you're an alien, why do you sound like you're from the North?" He replied, "Lots of planets have a North."

The Ninth Doctor’s costume was the simplest and most modern to date. In the past the various Doctors have all worn out-of-time faux Victorian era clothing; waistcoats, opera capes and scarves. This Doctor wore a plain t-shirt, pants and a leather jacket. For the first time he was actually wearing clothing that more or less fit the times. His costume remained unchanged during his series, with the exception of an occasional change of t-shirt color. Best of all, there were no question marks to be seen on his clothing (something that bothered me greatly about past Doctors)!

Much like the Eighth Doctor, the Ninth Doctor's Tardis interior was an impressively large steampunk kind of cavern, much more impressive than the original series' dinky interior. The Doctor mentioned more than once that the Tardis was not just a machine but alive, which was backed up by the incessant breathing sound in the background of the control room.

The Doctor's sonic screwdriver finally made its triumphant return in the new series, something we hadn't seen much since the Fifth Doctor's era.

The sonic screwdriver was originally just that-- a high tech tool that supposedly used sound to loosen screws and open locked doors. As time went on, the Doctor began relying more and more on it until the producers of the original series thought it was being used as a crutch, so they began to downplay it sometime during Doctor #5's era.

The sonic returned with a vengeance in the Ninth Doctor's adventures. It's now more versatile than ever, seemingly gaining new abilities every episode. No longer does it merely open locks, now it can be used to gain access to computers, reprogram cell phones so they can call into the past, even remotely control the Tardis. At times it seems more like magic than technology.

The Ninth Doctor was the first to use "psychic paper," a substance that would display whatever a subject thought he should see on it. If a guard would ask him for his pass, he'd show him the blank sheet of psychic paper, and the guard would see the appropriate credentials displayed on it, and allow the Doctor to pass. That would come in handy here in the real world.

The second photo of my project 20.

Got to shoot one of my oldest mates Jason Prasad. We've known each other since college days which is a long long time ago lol. He's the biggest wrestling fan I know and the belt he's wearing is actually an authentic WWF Championship one. He got it for his 21st when it was still known as the WWF (i think).

Much like Pat he has quite an eclectic taste in memorabilia. The cabinet next to him is filled to the rim with an impressive DVD collection, toy figures and a whole load of other cool knick knacks.. He's a massive comic fan and could probably give you the background history on any character.

Well he wont be buying many more DVD's, toy figures or comic books as he's got a wedding to pay for in the summer. Save hard my bro!

And what about our question? Who would he have over for dinner. Well I guess the t-shirt gave it away but interesting enough he chose to go with Superman's alter ego - Mr Clark Kent.

Basketball Cake

Basketball Cake for Zack. The score board is rice krispy treats covered in black fondant with fondant, royal icing and modeling chocolate for letters and numbers. Backboard is white fondant trimmed in red fondant. The basketball is chocolate cake covered in dyed burnt orange fondant with black fondant for the stripes. Net is white fondant, need to work on this technique...the net lasted exactly two minutes after this photo was taken before disintegrating. Floor boards were made by combining three colors of light to brown fondant, rolled out to a wood look, and then scored to create the look of boards. Thanks to many friends for suggestions on the structural elements. Mark helped actually attach the standing cake board to the wooden base with the two level bracket straps...he bled for the cause. Bill and Sheldon - at the Webb gathering for giving me direction on the type of wood to buy for the base and how to position the vertical cakeboard on the base for the greatest stability. And special thanks to Sally for the idea to create a hammock type structure to support the cake to the vertical Cake board. There are two dowel rods coming out from the board, I have mesh netting covered in fondant strung between the dowels. The dowels and net are supporting the cake and the cake board is tilted back at an 80 degree angle to assist with keeping the cake to the board. And thank you to Zoe for always being a great helper and confidence builder.

Caretaker Cabin, Blue Mountain, Adirondacks, NY

This is the cabin that while the fire tower was oppened prior to the 1990's was used by the Rangers. Most cabins generally weren't directly on the summit, some even a generous hike up and down. But this one is probably 100 yards from the tower, making it perhaps the cushiest fire tower in the Adirondacks. This is by no means a wilderness summit, it is one of the few public Adirondack peaks with visible antennae, a road, and buildings. It's however, also not totally developed, and only allows for non motorized hiking access to the public.

I've driven by Blue Mountain perhaps 100+ times over the years, and despite it's popularity never hiked it, I've even skied around the base, but never up it.

This was actually about 15 minutes post sunrise, but I'm fairly certain there was no sunrise. This was the scene I encounted when I reached the summit at 7:45am. This was not unexpected, as it was foggy on the hike in from about 2200ft to the summit at 3700. The photos I took before leaving the summit looked identical.

It was actually so warm, being warm natured myself, I contemplated removing my shirt entirely as I was dripping with sweat. However, I felt if I somehow encountered another group and was hiking shirtless, with the side zips on my goretex completely openned, they'd surely think I'd gone mad and have me committed.

I'd guess the temps were in the low 30's at the start of the hike around 6:30am.

The only relief was the at times strong winds on the summit which believe it or not felt like stepping into air conditioning on a hot summer day. We spent about 45 minutes up there before Caney became very cold, and I was adding layers. What is odd is wind generally clears fog, but there was fog for most of the trip down.

The trip down was uneventful, I did my best to create false trails for the next group, as i hate hiking downhill in winter on packed snow. Anytime I saw a path through the forest I went cross country and met back up with the trail at some point further down.

Second-string quarterback Alex (Darin Brooks) couldn't care less about the games--he's there for the good times. Craig (Sam Jones III) wants success, and so does his controlling girlfriend Denise (Gabrielle Dennis). Sammy (Chris Romano, a.k.a. Romanski, who cocreated the series), the team mascot, just wants to get laid. And around these four characters is built a web of high jinks involving sex, drugs, strip clubs, venereal disease, masturbation, bodily fluids, and other subjects guys are supposed to find hilarious. While the acting is enthusiastic and more or less competent, the situations and dialogue are inane at best (like a war between football and lacrosse players that can only be resolved by a promiscuous virgin, or when the team tries to break a losing streak by taking lots and lots of drugs) and insulting at worst (such as when the entire team gets syphilis from sharing the same sex toy, or when they try to blackmail a professor into giving them passing grades by having sex with his elderly mother). Its rare attempts at sincerity (such as when Alex meets a girl he might actually have feelings for) end up even worse. Blue Mountain State aspires to be Porky's on the gridiron; the show doesn't succeed--but if you're looking for half-hour doses of drunken guys inexplicably having sex with lots of hot interchangeable girls, this is your show. --Bret Fetzer

The Dog House

The colors of blue and red were inseparably paired in my mind on the cover of Kiss' Alive II in 1977. Though looking back the triad of black, blue, and red should have been imprinted as well/instead. As well as face painting on adults who reside outside of hospitals. Funny which memory fragments we can't forget and those, like the name of mom's third husband, any member of Kiss post Peter Criss, or the hooker in our trunk, we can never remember.

Where was I? Oh right, the tie with the pointers on it. Usually I'll pair it with something more outdoorslike, a fair isle, or tweed, but today the colors called to be united. This shawl collar cardigan is among the heavier weights of sweater that I own. A very satisfying heftiness which lends a nice drape to the fabric. A curmudgeon favorite. The shirt is a JCrew OCBD. When I picked it up I was still buying clothes without specific sizes, you know the ones that say S, M, or L will fit everyone. I mistakenly assumed that one JCrew "medium" OCBD is the same medium as any other JCrew "medium" OCBD. Anyone reading this with even trace amounts of estrogen in their system is laughing at my masculine gullibility.

Now the trousers. Nice check print on the cotton, including some red and navy striped into the brown, and it is disconcertingly soft like pajama fabric. Normally this should be a good thing since I don't like getting out of my PJs. Ever. But it is a little odd to leave the house feeling like I forgot my pants. Again.

They carried notebooks and pencils and pens. They carried spanish workbooks, science textbooks, calcuators, journals, flimsy paperback copies of great American classics, packs of gum, chemistry goggles, Bibles, highlighters, White-Out. They carried bulky Jansport backpacks with bulging pockets and burstings zippers. They packed these bags until they brimmed with enough supplies to keep ten students dilgently wrking. They carried car keys and driver's licenses with grainy pictures of smiling faces. They carried a false sense of freedom. They carried laptops, monsters that swallowed their lives between their metal jaws, weighing them down wih the knowledge of the world. These technological beasts tempted and taunted in two parts, with alluring promises and their untimely failures, holding their hope in megabytes. They carried cellphones. They carried iPods. They carried plaid and ponytails. They carried lacrosse sticks, club agendas, SAT flashcards, character shoes, cameras, Mock Trial cases, sheet music. They carried stress. The weight of their own potential, they carried it, the pressure, the expectations, the fear of the inevitable mistakes, all of it, they carried the wearines. They carried saddle oxfords on their feet, soles worn down with traveling the same tired path of those hallways. They plodded through the same days, moving forward for fear of the alternative, unthinking, unquestionig, rats in a maze, doing what they had always done before, backs bending and breaking under the weight, moving through the seasons with the same tired faces, back and forth, one step and then another and then another, tempering the spirit and dulling the restless urges and they go on, only to do it again. Their shirts are starched. Their smiles are crisp and clean, from a distance. They carried planners. They scheduled themselves into the small boxes, creating a life within those lines, spelled out neatly in rows of black ink, that indelible black ink. They carried these things in hope that one day they would be allowed to carry diplomas and roses across the lawn. In hopes that one day the gates would open and they would walk forward with empty arms, with nothing to carry. But they were wrong.
They will always carry the memories.

Sale of Toomer’s Oaks T-Shirts generates $30,000 in scholarship money

Jerry Rigby (center), president of Tiger Rags Inc., presented a $30,000 check Thursday to the Auburn University School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences for student scholarships. Accepting the check were Ryan Mitchell (left), president of the Student Government Association in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, and Russell Agnew (right), Toomer’s Oaks coordinator for the school’s Forestry Club. Tiger Rags created two special Auburn T-shirts following the news in February that the oaks at Toomer’s Corner had been poisoned, with $8 of the proceeds from each shirt sold being donated to the scholarship fund. Additional donations will be made as more shirts are sold during the summer and upcoming football season. Tiger Rags has partnered with the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences since 2003 to raise money for student scholarships by selling seedlings from Auburn’s famous Toomer’s Oaks.

Pillow Fight!

There aren't many things that bring on a stronger sense of nostalgia then a good, old-fashioned pillow fight.

Each year, in April, hundreds of cities around the world participate in International Pillow Fight Day. Thousands of people show up at a designated meeting space, pillow in hand, ready for a fight. The playfulness of this event makes us so happy and when we started Scared Panda last year we knew we wanted to create a t-shirt about this international holiday.

In our minds, any event that brings hundreds of thousands of people, of all ages, to a designated pillow fight is worth celebrating. Just the thought of it makes us smile and whenever we look at this t-shirt design, we find ourselves feeling just a little bit more carefree.

I Have That T-Shirt

Well, it's the weekend again, so it means a couple things; 1) less visitors to my blog and 2) I can post whatever I want, even though it might be questionable. Great. So of all the things going on in this picture, I noticed that the guy is wearing a shirt that I also own. I'm in a rush so it has to be a bathroom shot this morning. This is the shirt I made using the bleach stencil process for Ken's band's reunion in 2006. On the front it reads "Childhood Reunion" and the back says "Ralph's Diner, Sept. 16, 2006" It's a good day to wear it as his friend Scott who was also in the band is coming to stay this weekend . SO that's why I am in a rush - need to get to work early so I can get home early before Scott and Maro arrive.

And I will say it for you "Nice hair" Yes I know - it is getting into a crazy mode. I can't wait to have it cut on Monday.
