FOR SIR CAM ... USC bicycle wheel and one ... white ... line This one of these 90 degree weather high noon hours that we have been having (in October no less!) in "sunny southern California" ... so, I was crossing this street on the USC (University of Southern California) campus, camera in-hand (of course!), and the bright line caught my eye, then this fellow just "happened" to pass by. From the "Laughter is the Best Medicine" book comes this quote from Dave Coverly, Creators Syndicate: God: "Whew! I just finished a 24-hour period of alternating light and darkness on Earth." Angel: "What are you going to do now?" God: "CALL IT A DAY." ALSO: I (Diane Albertina) say that there is a third light which is THE INTENSE LIGHT THAT DEFINES THE SHADOWS. James Thurber apparently had said, "There are two kinds of light: The light that illumines, and the GLARE that obscures". 221/365 Free and Easy. Woke up at 12 to my friend Di calling me telling me he's coming over. He comes over soon and so does Yin. I fix Yin's bike up and Di went to get his from his grandma's. We then bike around and I finally got lights for my bike so I can ride safer at night haha. It's on my seat tube and frame in this pic. I moved it after this shot though since the front light was interfering with my brake cable. Di and I then biked over to Costco with Yin's directions and we hung out there and ate. We rode back but Di went home and I just crossed the bridge to my home. We live one Bridge apart. I ate dinner at home and took this shot of my fixed bike in the back yard. Pretty simple day I guess. Free Bike: Handlebars. The left side has been sanded in this picture, and the rotting foam handgrip removed; the right is as it was when the bike came into my possession. Stripped Bare Frame arrived a few months ago nicely packed, but that would not detract from its sorry state. It was painted in its original metallic kiwi green colour with original decals, but there was rust EVERYWHERE. So I stripped it. I used about 5 applications of standard Nitromorse - apparently the paint is hard to shift on some Raleighs and Carltons. I would highly recommend this is done outside with protective clothing, and a mask. Bear in mind Nitromorse goes through latex quickly, so waer Nitrile gloves (often blue or lilac) or Marigolds. I use a toothbrush to get the Nitromorse into the nooks and crannies. Some say wipe off with paper - but I found steel wool did amuch better job in getting the paint off. At this stage, it didn;t matter which grade of steel wool one uses. At some point,t he bare steel along with the joints from brazing (?) is visible. Hurrah! Not far to go! At this point, it might be worth to get rid of any redundant braze-ons but I keep all mine. Then I rubbed the frame with fine steel wool and white spirit, then with white spirit and a lint-free cloth. Prior to sparying, I checked the frame for any rust patches, which I removed with 400 grade sand paper, and smoothed over the frame with 600 grade sand paper, before washing it with white spirit and strining it up on my washing line. I couldn't be bothered to take the fork off, btw, but I masked all chrome bits and the badge. Hotel de Ville de Soultz (Haut-Rhin), Alsace Nothing on reverse. A nicely composed photograph depicting fully laden infantrymen assembled in front of the impressive Hotel de Ville de Soultz (Haut-Rhin) in Alsace. The men's M16 helmets are still shiny and their uniforms are typical of troops circa late 1916, giving us at least a time-frame in which this photograph was taken. Of note is the method used to keep the bicycles upright - laying rifles across both frames and a pack against the wheels. Filling Bike Tires. Bike Insureance. Filling Bike Tires
bike of a homeless There are different kinds of homeless, you have the ones who have nothing, or sometimes they carry a plastic bag, sometimes they have stolen a supermarket car on wheels. But since our government is more strickt, and not democratic anymore, all changed. This day, I was driving in the grey and cold rainy Amsterdam. My belly filled with food, my bed still warm. I see this bike, and knew that this was the 'home' of a tired and cold, lonely starfing homeless. I felt a bit like an intruder, but choose to make a quick picture of the bike, and his belongins. The man from the bike came stumbling out of a shelter nearby, and darkclothed he took the bike and walked away. He thought I was controling him, poor man. I wanted to say something, but looking at his tired back, his old shoes, the cold and damp street where he went, I just felt quilty, that I have so much. I could not get myself together to go after him, it felt not good. I still see him, walking in the rain..and still feel as if I was mistaken in not giving him money. August 11 Bike Shadow Finally, I got out on my road bike today. It was the first time since I broke my hand in early April. I've had one excuse after another for not getting out. On Monday my husband got my bike down and filled the tires for me so I had no more excuses except maybe the heat. Tonight it was nice so I took a short 10 mile ride that was mainly flat. It felt good. After I stopped and took the Daily Shoot picture with my cell phone I notice the long shadows. I love these shadows when I'm biking especially in a group. So I decided to try for a shot. With a little editing in Picnic it turned out ok. Bike magazine back issues : Dawes mountain bikes Bike Magazine Back Issues
Looking Out--Looking Back I was probably a little out of breath as I pulled my 10-speed bike up to the sidewalk in front of the Hub Cigar Store. I heard the nightly Chicago & North Western freight coming out of the yard just west of Belvidere, IL as it was beginning its trip back to Proviso Yard and although the trackage through town was only 10 mph, I still had to hustle a bit to ride the 5 blocks from my grandparents home down to the State Street crossing. The heavy door to the Hub swung freely as I entered, showing its age from more than 75 years of use at this point. Although I was only 17 at the time I took this picture from the Summer of 1981, both the nightly C&NW trains and the Hub Cigar Store were as much a part of me as my hometown of Belvidere. The Hub was that sort of store that every town had at one point. It had a barbershop in the back and a long counter down the center. Display cases along either side held cigars and nearly every candybar imaginable. Pipe tobacco, gardening gloves, razor cartridges, Harlequin romance novels, a word search book,--yup all those things and more. My grandfather always stopped here to pickup the Sunday Chicago Tribune on the way home from church. If I spent Saturday night with my grandparents I would get to go inside the Hub by myself to get the paper. I couldn't have been much older than 8 at the time. The Belvidere Junior High School was just a block west of here and a before-school routine usually saw me inside buying a long rope of Bubs-Daddy grape bubble gum. Was Bubs-Daddy even it's real name? After school you might get a can of Coca-Cola for the walk home. The magazine racks along the south wall held a wide variety of publications. It was here that I plunked down change for my first copy of Trains Magazine along with issues of Railroad, Railfan and Rail Classics. The early evening trains of Belvidere were also part my earliest experiences. My grandparents lived just four houses from these same tracks at 5th Ave. My father worked second shift at Chrysler so every weeknight after supper my mother would pile my brothers and sisters in the car and we'd go over to visit them. Train #96 would make an appearance every weeknight. The open autoracks from the mid-to-late 70s held large Plymouth Furys. It was easy to pickout the bright yellow taxis and the black and white police crusiers. So my vantage point for this image from July of 1981 certainly combined two different well rehearsed rituals. But things weren't always going to remain the same for me. I had just graduated high school that spring of 1981 and I was going to be heading off to college that fall. Unfortunately, I couldn't apply myself in the realm of higher learning and found a job in a local machine shop a while later. Maybe things worked out for the best--one door closed and another one opened. What good would a Journalism degree be at this point? I might have gone to work for some newspaper--only to see it closed in the face of the digital internet revolution. The Hub Cigar Store? Well, it lasted a bit longer, but age took a toll on the building. The two upstairs floors housed small apartments and the place really became rundown and seedy. Around 1996 or so the City of Belvidere tried to step in and save the structure, but it was too badly deteriorated at that point and was demolished. Where I once stood as those GP50s shook the chipped linoleum floor is now a parking lot. The C&NW? Well, the Union Pacific bought the hometown railroad in 1995 and auto trains still leave Belvidere on most every weeknight, but you won't find yellow and green GP50s hauling them. The trains usually sport trios of GP15s and don't even try to see what automobiles might be onboard--because open autoracks have gone the way of the C&NW and the Hub Cigar Store. You can barely tell if those enclosed autoracks are loaded or empty these days. So here is to those simple things that occupied my days when I was a teenager. When my only worries were cutting a few lawns, affording a roll of Kodachrome 64 to run through my Pentax K1000--and peddling my 10 speed bike around the hometown. Run to the Redwoods A friend of mine was doing web searches using my name and came across a site that has back issues of long out of print magazines from the 70's. I purchased the issue and have attached printouts of an article that ran in the October 1974 issue of Custom Chopper magazine. While I claim no credit for the success of the "Redwood Run" in later years, I was the one who was it's initiator. Bob Dron was at "The Run to the Redwoods" and is the guy parked by the side of the road watching the passing bikes in the first photo above the title. 4 years later he purchased the Oakland Harley-Davidson dealership from the surviving Self brother. At the Northern California Dealers meetings he began lobbying for a revival of the TTT event and suggested they follow the format I had established, ie. live band, food and drink provided and use the same (now improved) campsite. When it was finally approved sometime later he called and told me they had decided to call it the "Redwood Run", a slight variation on the name I used. The call was a courtesy to see if I objected and of course I did not. I attended the first event and for many years afterward. As the run grew in popularity it became profitable to a small degree. The dealers had begun contracting with the local Kiwanis Club for all site services. The local sheriff announced the dealers where going to have to begin paying for his departments "overtime" costs incurred by policing the event, to the tune of $40,000, the dealers canceled the event. The very next year the Kiwanis took out ads in several newspapers and motorcycle magazines and announced the continuation of the "Redwood Run" just as everyone had know it before. The 25th Anniversary Redwood Run was a huge success several years ago and the event also sells out early each year. Best viewed large to read the text. A ROYAL Navy rating serving at HMS Sultan has died in a motorcycle crash during a race on the Isle of Man. Petty Officer Air Engineering Technician Jamie Adam, 28, was racing in this year's Junior Manx Grand Prix when he crashed on the second lap. Paramedics battled to save PO(AET) Adam but he died at the scene. The collision also claimed the life of Chris Bradshaw, 39, a police officer from Staffordshire, who died in hospital. PO(AET) Adam, who has completed several tours in Afghanistan and Iraq with the Commando Helicopter Force on 846 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Yeovilton, joined HMS Sultan in March, where he worked on the Sea King Commando aircraft. A statement issued by HMS Sultan's commanding officer, Commodore Mark Slawson, said: 'Jamie had just completed his Petty Officer Air Engineering Technician qualifying course at the Royal Naval Air Engineering & Survival Equipment School at HMS Sultan. 'A professional and committed individual, he had made a real success of his course and was shortly due to join 771 Naval Air Squadron at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, Cornwall. 'Popular and well-known, his passion for motorcycling was always evident and he was an enthusiastic member of the Royal Navy Motorcycle Club, for whom he often raced. His tragic loss, coming so unexpectedly whilst doing the sport he loved, is felt deeply both within HMS Sultan and throughout the wider Fleet Air Arm.' PO(AET) Adam, originally from Scotland, joined the Royal Navy in November 1998. His passion for motorcycle racing came from his grandfather, Jack Adam, who was a successful rider in the Isle of Man TT and among an elite club of riders to average more than 100mph on the circuit. PO(AET) Adam joined the RN Motor Cycle Club in 2001 and took over as secretary in January 2006 - playing a pivotal role in raising thousands of pounds for charity. He first competed on the Isle of Man in 2009, finishing ninth in the Newcomers race and 27th in the Senior MGP. Police are investigating the fatal crash, which happened on Wednesday morning at 11am. A joint statement issued by Isle of Man Constabulary and the Manx Motorcycle Club said: 'We extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of both men.' I like not having the nuts exposed, but this was a PITA. If I could get a do-over I would try a different method of attaching the square tube to the repair clamps.
