Strobist info: The extra small subject posed it's own challenges- to create an umbrella to subject ratio closer to that of a person, I snooted the flash before putting it behind a shoot-through umbrella. I know, I know- weird shadows behind the neck/head...it's a first attempt, like I said!

Reflections

A strange store on Guildford Road. The windows are filthy and the window displays consist of faded images of cars, some steering wheels, rusty oil tins, a wooden stool, a beaten up toy car with a bear in it and some tinsel. Until a few weeks ago there was an ancient computer monitor on the stool as well (which had been there for ten years at least).

The sudden vanishment of the monitor suggests things might be changing, so I figured I should record the place before it gets cleaned up, or razed to the ground with flaming torches or something.

(That's the Buddhist temple reflected in the window by the way)

New Toy Room

262of365 ~ With our kids 7 years apart, and our son hitting the tweens faster each day, we thought it was time to give him his own space. We took all of the little ones toys and put them in a small room off of the master closet. This is one of those spaces a builder would typically frame around and leave for the owner to wonder if there's usable square footage behind the wall. Our builder finished it out and we use to use it as a quiet book nook for them; however, it's apparent that little sister is cramping his too cool style when friends are over so we put her toys in there and will leave the new basement area for him. They better be happy because it was a lot of work to move tons of books down and toys up!!

the story of koji & his new body

This is Koji after his make-over. Koji is a Lead with a custom face-up by Byke_Stegosaurs. I purchased him from Byke in July 2010, bald, and on an obitsu body. I really liked the face-up she gave him and I adored the snake-bites piercings. :) However, I didn't like the obitsu body because it was too slim for my taste so I sold it, and found a stock tae body to put Koji on. And it was all good for awhile...but then in November, I snapped one of Taiyo's ankles--Taiyo is my custom Richt.

Anyway, long story short, I found a Taeyang Arashi on entertainmentearth.com for a price that was too good to pass up. Arashi arrived yesterday, and the parts harvesting began. Koji donated his old body to Taiyo and gave up his blonde spiky mohair wig to Cloud (another custom Lead with a yellow wig I wasn't crazy about). In return for these selfless deeds, I rewarded Koji with Arashi's awesome tattooed body, eye-mech with its dark blue eyechips and cool coppery hair.

I had debated keeping Arashi but couldn't make myself like the lack of eyebrows. Also, his face-up was too edgy for me. Sorry Arashi! It seems that I no longer have any desire to add more dolls to my pullip/taeyang/dal family. Not stock ones, anyway. I LOVE LOVE LOVE custom dolls, though, and the ones I currently have have been customized exactly how I want them, so it would pain me to part with any of them.

A few of his favorite things

Here is my finished Wonderful Wallaby. It is posed with some of Little Man's favorite things. You can see he likes blue and sheeps. Thus, this fuzzy blue Wallaby is perfect for him. It's a size 2 (although he just turned 1)made with Plymouth Encore Worsted using the recommended size 6 and 8 needles (circular and doublepoint). The only modification I made is that I did a seed stitch instead of ribbing or garter stitch. I also did the sleeves slightly longer than the recommended 8" to underarm. I learned a few new skills doing the Wallaby including the Kitchener stitch. It wasn't too hard (I just had to remember in, out, in, out). I did it a little tight so I may undo and redo it at a later point, but for now--I'm done!

TfL bus stop at Loughton Station (stop C). Routes 20, 167, 397, 549 and 804 (Essex school route) towards Buckhurst Hill, Woodford or Chingford.

TfL bus stops were installed in the Loughton area a few years ago, replacing very basic bus stops, many of which had no timetables. TfL have invested in placing London stops outside the TfL zone where TfL services (such as the 20, 167, 397, 549) operate. For the TfL stops in Essex, Essex County Council added the condition that the Traveline phone number and web address had to be put on underneath the route numbers (e-tiles). TfL also have to produce timetables for the non-TfL routes which also serve the stops.

The two stops at Loughton Station are strangely numbered 'B' and 'C', instead of 'A' and 'B'. I'm not really sure why TfL have done this.

The TfL stops outside the TfL zone have reached the Loughton & Debden area, the Brentwood area (except Brentwood High Road), the roads approaching Lakeside Shopping Centre (excluding the shopping centre bus station), and the Westerham area in Kent. There are also other locations, but i'm not too sure about the Kent, Surrey, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire areas. One area the TfL stops have not been placed is Hertfordshire, where Herts CC already provide very informative bus stops.

I just got that custom pinhead painting on the record. It's so amazing! Thank you Tony!!! It so rules. Like a cherry on top ;)

that's a signed photograph of pinhead by Doug Bradley above the smurfs. It's a big poster sized photogragh, really cool. Below the smurfs is my 1/1500 Pinhead statue. It's so incredible. And to the left and right of the statue are pinhead figures in the packages on the wall.

Non-motorized boating pilot program comes to an end

LOS ANGELES — When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District, granted a license in July for a seven week non-motorized boating pilot program on the Los Angeles River, the Los Angeles Conservation Corps quickly booked the allotted tours.

“It took about 10 minutes for the 280 tickets to sell, once we posted the announcement on line,” said Yasmin Mero-Corona, program coordinator, Los Angeles Conservation Corps. “We had another 300 on a waiting list to fill any no-shows. One gentleman stood by with his check every weekend until we had a cancellation for him to fill,” Mero-Corona added.

The test program allowed for no more than two trips per day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday beginning August 12 and ending September 25. The program was as much about education as it was access, with many of the tours featuring guest speakers, including Corps personnel, talking about the history of the river and plans for its revitalization.

The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority supervised the two-hour canoe and kayak trips covering a 1.5-mile stretch of the river. While most of the trip is a leisurely ride the 'Cattail Shoot' provides a bit of excitement as the staff helps participants and their vessels through a narrow, shallow shoot and one portage point, 'Rocky Rapids,' that requires boaters to exit their crafts and navigate the rocks on foot.

“A mentor of mine when I was a biologist at New York District was fond of saying, touch the resource. That's what accessing the river is to so many urban dwellers in Los Angeles,” said Josephine Axt, Chief, Planning Division, Los Angeles District, during her tour September 16.

“Even though there are nearby mountains where people can enjoy the outdoors, their day to day experience doesn't usually encourage or encompass much of a non-urban environment. Accessing the river is symbolic of a shared vision many LA residents have of the city embracing a more sustainable future,” added Axt.

For many boaters these trips represented their first access to the river and their enthusiasm was not tied to their skill level.

“The participants were nervous at first because for many adults, this was the first time on a canoe or kayak,” said Supervising Ranger III, Fernando Gomez. “However, at the end of the trip, they wanted more and some even said they were going to go out and buy a kayak to continue their experience, not on the LA River of course. For the skilled kayakers, they walked away with the surprise of how beautiful and calming the trip was,” Gomez added.

The Corps is an active partner in revitalizing and preserving the Los Angeles River, however, an important primary mission remains.

“I must be clear, nothing we do can jeopardize human safety or reduce the flood carrying capacity of this river,” said Col. Mark Toy, Los Angeles District Commander, during his opening remarks for the inaugural tour Aug. 8.

Now that the non-motorized boating pilot program has ended, no boating is authorized on the Los Angeles River. The river can, very quickly, become extremely dangerous, especially during the general winter storm season.

The Corps will review trip reports and lessons learned from staff and participants. Working with the stakeholders the Corps will carefully consider all options for boating on the Los Angeles River in future years.

This is so brilliant; I don't know why I didn't think of it! But while you're digging through crowded toy chests (and your floors, let's be honest here) to root out recalled toys, why not take the opportunity to also divest yourself of some other toys that make the cut as far as safety goes but are just loathsome to you for other reasons?

Myself, I would get rid of the lovely wooden fruits and vegetables that with two kids were ingredients for wonderful gentle picnics and tasty kitchen creations, but in the hands of Eric have become projectile missiles. And Candyland. That would definitely go, with me laughing manically while gleefully tossing it into the trash can. And the huge rocking horse of Serena's that she never rides but for whom we must maintain a stable. In the computer room. And 2/3 of the stuffed animals who live here. I don't care which ones.

This is so cathartic!

(Sorry kids, all this stuff has been "recalled".)

So, what about you? Will you join me in taking back our houses from stupid toys we didn't want in the first place? Or toys we once liked but have grown to hate now that we know their true personalities? Join me in collectively LYING TO OUR KIDS?

Daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who succeeded Oda Nobunaga, was well-known for his unification of Japan, helping to bring to an end the Sengoku, or Warring States period.
At the age of 50, he finally fathered his only son, Sutemaru, or Tsurumatsu. The little boy must have well-loved and anticipated, as the only heir of Toyotomi, meant to carry on his dynasty. Sadly, this small prince only lived just over two years, dying in September 1591. The beauty and richness of the Momoyama period are shown here, in these items a rich and all powerful warlord bestowed upon his son.

The dragon king Kurikara appears in takamakie (raised makie) on pear-skin ground on the scabbard embellished with metal fittings of chrysanthemums and paulownia in high relief.
The blade was made by the master Naomuni of Ichimanji school in Bizen at the beginning of the Kamakura period.

She was a very intelligent and very cunning girl when she was growing up, she went to become the greatest Queen (without consort, she always said she was married to England) England has ever had, as such I have a huge respect for Elizabeth.
She was the woman beyond her times, she made England not only an empire but was a great patron of the arts, diplomacy, and all the great things that make culture and an empire great both in culture and econimcally.
When she left not only was she missed and given a great funeral, but also she left what it is still called the "golden age" of England.
Years that will never be forgotten, because in the end she was the one responsbile to make England a golden age and a cradle for knowledge, arts, culture and economical prosperity.

[2-8-2011] - Patiently Waiting

Watching the cars go by.

My first long night exposure with the Holga 120N. My first reaction to it was ‘wow there is a lot of things going on here’, and it is admittedly a little busier than I had intended it to be. I do not own a light meter, and relied loosely on a light meter application I downloaded on the iPhone to meter the shot. I say loosely because honestly I don’t trust it much at all. The iPhone meter read at 3 seconds, adding time for reciprocity failure plus a little more to be on the safe side I decided to do a 10 second exposure.

I have shot from this location once before and wanted to replicate the shot of people waiting to cross the street as cars drove by. After setting up the camera on a tripod and composing the shot, I waited several minutes for a passer-by to come along and wait to cross the street. I struck gold when this elderly man in a suit stopped at the crosswalk, couldn’t have asked for a better subject to come along.

Where I think this photo starts to go array is in the light trails of the cars, and the flare that cuts across the top half of the picture. They seem overly busy and detract from the rest of the picture. Perhaps this shot would have been best with color film, as the light trails would have been both red and white, adding a little more depth to them. All things aside for my first long exposure night shot with the Holga its not half bad, and look forward to trying it again in the future.

Serious Toy

Sorry everyone, I've been away for a bit up north. I had a chance to visit some places a little out of scooter range with the camera. I thought I'd get back with some nice shots of the local attractions but nothing much turned out :-(

I had my Sigma 10 – 20 (Man I hate that lens and wish I had bought the real Canon version) and did most of my shooting with that. It lacks the Image Stabilization feature and has terrible chromatic aberration for distant objects. For a wide angle you would think you would get decent DOF but you don't, or at least I don't (I think mine must be a lemon).

Anyway, most of the shots I took were in the shade so I had to shoot wide open to avoid having camera shake and next to nothing came out with decent focus on infinity. Bummer.

To the point; I have been using one of those $20 special tripods because I'm cheap and I didn't even have that with me. The damn thing blows in the wind and wiggles all over the place. So I went out and blew the big bucks on a Manfrotto 190XPROB with the 804RC2 Head Kit for $259.89 tax included. This sucker is strong. You could prop up a house on it.

Now I'm a newbie at product photography. With table top stuff you get to tweak and improvise to your hearts content as I am known for. With product photography you are expected to present the product as it really is but you can play around with lights and staging without breaking the rules. I thought I'd give it a try.

This is the beast…

I wanted to shoot it before it got scratched up or anything. What I tried for was even lighting on the length of the legs, no noticeable sharpening, an interesting and complimentary backdrop, accurate saturation and an "I want that" presentation.

The things I know I missed are 1) the horizon line of the shooting floor has a curve 2) the centre post is visible but not visible enough 3) I should have cropped it better so I would have a better place to put the name of the product 4) I should have adjusted the lighting on the one twist lever so the name was readable.

One strange thing about this tripod is the centre leg does not match the other two legs. I can only assume it is a boy.

Any tips any of my Pro Flickr friends can give me would be appreciated.

Strobist: Single strobe with grid, stand mounted, camera right behind subject pointed down. Strobe is very close to subject just out of frame.

This shot was taking in a white room with sunlight beaming through large windows so it was extremely bright. Strobist says that with enough light you can turn white walls black. I still have at least 1 stop wiggle room to reduce the exposure of his head but the detail in the flooring would have been lost.

DOTM Ultimate Jetwing Optimus Prime

Take two awesome transformers and combine them to form and even more awesome custom: ULTIMATE JETWING PRIME!

I used DMK01 and Takara's Jetwing Optimus Prime to make a movie accurate leader sized version of the Autobot leader.
For obvious reasons, the figure is not transformable.

I took the best parts from the DMK kit and blended them with the toy. Optimus now sports more accurate feet, legs, chest, shoulders, forearms and the most articulated and accurate hands for a Prime figure ever!
I also added chromed side mirrors taken from a truck model, and the tetris-like parts on the inside of the windshields.
The head was somewhat resculpted. I shaved off the "neck" from the original mold, for a more streamlined and accurate look, and I sculpted new eyes. They are now 2 tiny holes, instead of the original triangular shade-like eyes. I also mounted the head on a ball joint and added 2 powerful blue LEDs that even show in daylight. This is the part where the tiny holes become really important for the overall look. The LEDs glow look just like in the movie!

As cool as the original chainguns from the toy may look, they aren't movie accurate at all. So I scratch built new ones that ressemble a little better the look they got on screen and at the same time, keeping them removable. (the new guns alone are a true work of art. I just can't remember how many parts I used there!)

Last but not least, I added a few parts to the lower wings for a more accurate look. The engines also have new parts, but they will be rarely seen.. it's still good to know they are there, though!

*The smokestacks are removable so that the back pack can be attached properly.

the first time I went hunting after hearing wave 2 had hit retail shelves, I walked into a toy aisle literally seconds after someone else picked up Grimlock and was examining him...fail...

anyway, this past week TF Muggs were on sale at Target...7.99 down from 10.99...big whoop, right?...yes big whoop...Targets were cleaned out...no one can resist the sale sign...

unfortunately, I once again checked the wrong Targets looking for what I wanted...un-unfortunately (or fortunately, if you don't want to confuse people), TRU had one left and I went ahead and paid *gasp* full price!...haha, a couple slightly dented corners bother me more than the price...but I really need to just get over that... :P
