    vegetarian diet
  • Vegetarianism is the practice of following a plant-based diet including fruits, vegetables, cereal grains, nuts, and seeds, mushrooms, with or without dairy products and eggs.

  • (Vegetarian diets) A minority of adolescents are vegetarians, though popularity of various vegetarian diets has increased among adolescents in recent years. For the most part, teenagers can meet most nutritional requirements and achieve adequate growth with a well-planned vegetarian diet.

  • The energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water through 1 °C, equal to one thousand small calories and often used to measure the energy value of foods

  • (caloric) of or relating to calories in food; "comparison of foods on a caloric basis"; "the caloric content of foods"

  • Either of two units of heat energy

  • a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree at one atmosphere pressure; used by nutritionists to characterize the energy-producing potential in food

    2000
  • 2000 is the second album by hip hop artist Grand Puba of the group Brand Nubian, released in mid-1995 through Elektra Records.

  • The 2000 is a breakdance move which resembles a rapidly-spinning handstand. It is a type of spin in practice, but many consider it a power move because it is so flashy and is often begun with significant momentum like other power moves.

  • 2000 (MM) was a leap year that started on a Saturday, in accordance with the Gregorian Calendar. It was the 2000th year of the Common Era or the Anno Domini designation, and the last year of the 20th century and of the 2nd millennium.

2000 calorie vegetarian diet - The Volumetrics

The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan: Feel Full on Fewer Calories

The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan: Feel Full on Fewer Calories

Dieters everywhere have the same complaint: they're hungry all the time. Now this revolutionary book, based on sound scientific principles, can help you lose weight safely, effectively, and permanently without those gnawing pangs of hunger.
The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan introduces the concept of "energy density" -- concentration of calories in each portion of food. Here you'll learn how to avoid high energy -- dense foods, and how such different nutritional factors as fat, fiber, protein, and water affect energy density and satiety. You'll discover which foods, eaten under which circumstances, allow you to consume fewer calories and still be satisfied. And you'll get to know the hidden calorie traps, seemingly innocuous foods that can sneak unwanted calories into your body. Finally, the authors offer 60 sensible, tasty and easy recipes, plus an integrated program of exercise and behavior management that can be sustained over a lifetime.

Do you overeat because you don't feel satisfied or full? Volumetrics is based on "the science of satiety"--what researchers have learned about the food choices that make people feel full. The authors teach you how to eat low-calorie-dense, high-volume foods so that you feel like you've eaten plenty, even though you've eaten fewer calories. You'll lose weight without feeling hungry or deprived.
Here's an example of how volume affects eating. Raisins are dried grapes. But 100 calories of raisins fill only one-quarter cup, while 100 calories of fresh, whole grapes fill one and two-thirds cups. You'll feel satisfied after one and two-thirds cups of grapes, but if you're eating raisins, you're likely to keep filling your mouth. The point is not to stop eating raisins (or chocolate, cheese, or other high-calorie, low-volume foods), but to realize that you're likely to take in many more calories before your body tells you you're full. If you're trying to manage your weight, eating more low-density foods (lower-calorie foods that have a lot of volume) will make you feel full while you drop pounds.
Barbara Rolls, a respected and well-published food-nutrition researcher at Pennsylvania State University, and food writer Robert Barnett explain energy density and how to use this concept to lose weight. They include the scientific evidence about how low-density (low-calorie, high-volume) foods make you feel satisfied, the best (and worst) foods for a satisfying, lower-calorie diet, a menu plan, an exercise plan, and environmental influences on eating. You also learn which foods are easiest to overeat. This is not a fad diet--it is logical and scientifically based, yet easy to understand and put into action. --Joan Price

Chicken Egg Yolk Antibodies, Production and Application: IgY-Technology (Springer Lab Manuals)

Polyclonal antibodies, widely used in research and diagnostics, are conventionally isolated from the blood of immunised mammals. The fact that antibodies can also be detected in the yolk of eggs laid by immunised hens, led to the development of the yolk antibody technology as an alternative method less stressful to animals. Hens can be kept under nearly natural conditions and antibodies be isolated from the eggs.
Further, the IgY-technology has the advantage that avian antibodies can be produced against several antigens which do not induce a immune response in mammals. Protocols on how to keep and immunise hens and on the extraction, isolation and use of antibodies from yolk are described in detail in this manual.
For their work on yolk antibodies the authors received the FISEA (International Foundation for the Substitution of Animal Experimentation, Luxembourg) prize in 1997.

Smash-it Egg Yolk Stress relief

It looks like a 2 inch water-filled ball until you throw it against the wall, then it turns into a fried egg! A cute novelty toy, fun to demonstrate. This small plastic toy is non-toxic, filled with filtered water and contains no lead. You can throw it, toss it, drop it, and the toy Splats! and then comes back to it's original shape! This Splat Egg is very durable and will provide long lasting fun as long as you adhere to a few simple guidelines. It is very important that you explain these guidelines to your children. SplatBacks were designed to be indoor toys. If your Splat Egg is thrown on concrete or other rough surfaces they will likely break. SplatBacks are recommended for indoor use only. Also, allowing the Splat Egg to return to it's original shape before retrieving it will increase it's lifespan. Pulling it too quickly from a surface before it's been allowed to reshape weakens the plastic and shortens the life of the product. Be careful not to throw SplatBacks against anything with an edge, such as corners of appliances, furniture, and molding as they may burst. When your Splat Egg loses it's sticking or expanding ability, simply wash with warm soapy water and dry it. ? * Priced per Egg. * Ages 5 and up

we all eat a late dinner in this house... feeding time for the pets is around 9:00 at night. even the fish get fed at that time! oftentimes, i don't even eat dinner, but when i do it's after all the pets are fed. because of big brother francis' inflammatory bowel disease, the cats are on a strict feeding schedule... two meals of canned food a day: fancy feast for jimi and buddy todd, and duck & green pea for fran. it's becoming quite frustrating, especially when, in addition to my own cats, i have the downstairs kitties to feed. one of them is now on a canned diet for weight loss... will let you all know how it goes!

anyway, here is jimi lounging around, waiting for his food. you all have known jimi long enough now to know that he is serious about his food!! he parks himself over here by the table and waits.

jimi fact #18... jimi eats his fancy feast on the kitchen table. the other two eat on the counter. i have to put the plate on the table, lift jimi up there, and then pull out the black chair so he can use it to get down from the table when he is done. jimi is always the first one done. :)

Drastic Fantastic

Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall burst onto the public consciousness last year with her gritty debut album Eye to the Telescope, a provocative sonic mesh of heartfelt pop, rootsy, electric blues, and left-field alt-rock. Eye spawned three hit singles — the Grammy-Award nominated "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," "Suddenly I See," and "Other Side of the World" — all of which became omnipresent on radio, television, movies, and the Internet. Thanks to the multi-media exposure, Eye is certified platinum in the U.S., with worldwide sales exceeding 3.5 million copies.
Now Tunstall is readying her follow-up, entitled Drastic Fantastic, which will be released by Virgin Records on September 18th, 2007. It showcases the 31-year-old's growth as both a songwriter and musician on songs like the thumping "Hold On," the rollicking "Saving My Face," the jazz-inflected "Someday Soon," and the frisky pop gem "I Don’t Want You Now." "I wanted to be braver," Tunstall says of the album. "I wanted to push the musicality. You can't let previous success scare you away from moving on."

KT Tunstall' s Acoustic Extravaganza

Don't be put off by the cover photo on K.T. Tunstall's follow-up to the four-million selling Eye of the Telescope. Yes, it's startling to see her sporting Buck Rogers boots and wielding a glittery, oversized silver guitar. And what's up with the comic book images that make up the CD booklet? But if Tunstall is feeling a bit like her overnight success is something out of interplanetary fiction, the new graphic "positioning" doesn’t mean the Scottish singer-songwriter has gone full-blown, diva-fied pop-rock. Rather, she's built on the success of the euphorically catchy "Suddenly I See" and "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" to craft the bouncy kiss-off of "I Don't Want You Now," and the hypnotic beat of "Hold On," with its lyrical warning (shades of Bob Marley's "Judge Not") of karma and responsibility. The new repertoire, like her sensual, slightly slurred singing, is more authoritative, polished, and less bluesy and rough-edged as Eye…, despite a British urban influence. But Tunstall paves her continuum by again using producer Steve Osborne (U2, New Order, Happy Mondays), and with two songs she recorded for the first album--the driving pop-rock of the anti-plastic surgery anthem "Saving My Face" (with its irresistible "ooh-oohs" lifting the mood), and "Funnyman," a pop-alt-folk sonic blend that flirts with electronica. Best of all, Tunstall, who veers from playing a little electric lead guitar to ukulele on the album, is decidedly intent on reprising the spare framework of the songwriter. "White Bird," the most memorable of the four songs that spotlight her poetic, pensive side, amounts to a meditation ("Half of you is heavenly/Showing off your purity"). But whether meant as a metaphor or a literal descriptive paean, a la the romantic 19th-century poets, this melancholy, quiet song finds the 32-year-old musician more confident and on top of her craft than anything on her delicious debut. On the whole, then, this solid sophomore album isn't really such a "drastic" turn. But you just might agree with the second half of her title. --Alanna Nash

Toast

Based on the bittersweet story of food writer Nigel Slater's childhood, and set to the songs of Dusty Springfield, Toast is a delicious love letter to the tastes and smells that a young boy associates with his journey into adulthood. Nigel's Mother was always a poor cook, and her addiction to all things canned isn't helping. Nigel, on the other hand, laps up cookbooks as if they were porn, and spends all his free time gazing longingly at the delights offered at Percy Salt's grocery shop. Nigel's Dad worries there is something "wrong" with his son and the two find it difficult to connect, so Nigel finds friendship and a father figure in Josh, the gardener. As his mother's illness worsens, so do Nigel's relations with his father -- the Bolognese he cooks is far too exotic, the uncooked Fray Bentos pie MUST be finished, and his father's rage as Nigel insists on picking every last bit of jelly off the canned ham at the annual picnic hits an all time high. Dad then fires Josh for reasons unknown to Nigel. Just before Christmas, Nigel's mother dies, leaving Nigel and his father heartbroken. Their touching efforts to look after each other, often through gestures with food, sadly seem to miss the target. His father begins to spend his evenings at the Masonic lodge until a new cleaner, Mrs. Potter, arrives on the scene. Mrs. Potter's curves, charms and lemon meringue pies quickly bewitch Nigel's father and much to Nigel's horror, the three soon embark on a move to the country. The one silver lining in the cloud of a new school is Domestic Science class, where Nigel can finally shine. Cooking soon becomes the key weapon in the battle for Dad's affections. Ironically, the main casualty of these culinary skirmishes between Nigel and Mrs. Potter is Nigel's father, as his waistline grows and grows. Hoping to escape the madness, Nigel lands a job in the kitchen of his local pub. It is here that Nigel's eyes are opened to a world of culinary opportunity.

Roasted Red Pepper Soup

Roasted Red Pepper Soup

This is one of my favorite soups. It is delicious!

Roasted Red Pepper Soup
Servings: 4

* 4 large red bell peppers, roasted seeds removed
* 1 tsp olive oil
* 1 onion, chopped
* 1 carrot, peeled and chopped
* 2 garlic cloves, chopped
* 1 tsp herbs de provence
* 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
* 3 cups fat free chicken broth (or vegetable stock)
* 1 medium russet potato, peeled and chopped
* 1/4 cup dry white wine
* Salt and freshly ground black pepper
* 2 tbsp fat free sour cream
* 1/4 cup Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

To roast red peppers on the grill, place clean fresh red peppers directly on the grill top. You can also put them directly over the flame on your stove. Turn your peppers frequently, as needed until the skin has turned completely black and starts to blister. When the entire pepper skin has turned black, remove the peppers from the grill and place them into a bowl.

Cover the bowl with a lid or a dish to make it airtight to build up steam. Let the peppers rest in the bowl for 10 minutes. Uncover, remove from the bowl and the skin will slide off easily. Cut the pepper in half to core and remove seeds.

Heat 1 tsp of oil in a large heavy pot over medium-high heat. Add the onions, carrots, garlic, and herbs and saute until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the broth, roasted bell peppers, potato and wine. Bring to a simmer over high heat. Decrease the heat to medium-low and cover, simmer until the potatoes are very tender, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes.

With an immersion hand blender, puree the soup in the pot with the sour cream until it is smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the grated parmesan and ladle into bowls.

for a pot of soup

for a pot of soup

at home.

recipe (as requested):

ingredients:
veggies (anything you like in your soup), these are what i like:
potatoes (cut into big chunks)
carrots (leave whole)
cabbage (quartered)
green beans (leave whole)
turnips (cut into big chunks)
leeks (use white part only)
bouquet garni
beef marrow bones (one package)
beef short ribs (one package)
oxtails (one package)

how to:
1. boil the beef to death (jk!!!) actually boil the beef and get rid of the first water and scum, rinse the beef and put back in pot. Add water to cover the meat. Bring to boil and lower heat, simmer for two hours or more (dont forget to add the bouquet garni). Partly covered. Skim the scum and any fat once in a while.
2. add potatoes and carrots and turnips. cook until tender. add the rest of the veggies. cook til tender.
3. take out all vegetables into a big platter. take out the oxtails and short ribs into another plate. season the broth and leave it to simmer.
4. soup is great with toasted french bread and aioli (if aioli not available use garlic bread).

note: you can serve the soup by itself with the bread as first course then the meat and veggies separately as 2nd course, along with sea salt and pepper mixture. i usually just have the soup on the side and help myself with the veggies and meat from the big platter.

bon appetit!

Vegetable Soups from Deborah Madison's Kitchen

When I said I was working on a soup book, the response was often, “Oh, I love soup!” People enthuse about soup in a way that’s so heartwarming it makes me feel as if I’m in the right camp... The soups in this book are based on vegetables, and many of these recipes are new ones for me. But some are soup classics, by which I mean some of those that have stood the test of time in my kitchen, (Quinoa, Corn, and Spinach Chowder) and those that are classics in the culture (Boston-Style Black Bean Soup). I’ve tried to streamlined these dishes as much as possible without sacrificing goodness, so that you can easily enjoy them in your own kitchen. I hope you do enjoy making these soups and add them, one by one, to your repertoire.

—from the Introduction
In Vegetable Soups from Deborah Madison’s Kitchen, America’s favorite vegetarian cookbook author presents more than 100 inventive and straightforward soup recipes guaranteed to satisfy appetites all year long.

Deborah Madison has shown millions of Americans how to turn vegetables and other healthful ingredients into culinary triumphs. In her newest collection of recipes, She serves up a selection of soups ranging from stylish first courses to substantial one-bowl meals.

Madison begins with a soup-making primer and streamlined recipes for vegetable stocks and broths (such as the Hearty Mushroom Broth), which serve as the foundation for many of the recipes that follow, for those who wish to make their own. Soups like the Mexican Tomato Broth with Avocado and Lime can start a supper or stand alone as a simple, light meal. Cooks looking for heartier choices will find satisfying dishes such as Potato and Green Chile Stew with Cilantro Cream or grain-based soups like the Wild Rice Chowder. Organized by seasons, the recipes make the most of the produce–from a springtime Fennel and Almond Soup with Saffron and Ricotta Dumplings to a deeply flavorful autumnal Roasted Squash, Pear and Ginger Soup. When time just isn’t available and prepared soups take the place of home made, Madison offers a battery of suggestions for how to make them your own with simple additions from delicious oils and herbs to an invigorating Cilantro Salsa.

Featuring fifty stunning full-color photographs by Laurie Smith, serving suggestions, wine notes, and a host of ideas for creative finishing touches including caramelized pear “croutons” and souffled cheese toasts, this friendly soup lover's guide gives the reader a hundred delicious ways to enjoy the benefits and flavors of vegetables by the bowlful throughout the seasons.

squeaker

squeaker

I buried Squeaker today.

When people ask me how she came into my life, I would say "she came with the house." It sounds glib, but it's true.

When Jenny and I bought the house on Avenue G at the beginning of 1997, Squeaker was already living there as a street cat. She had been looked after by the previous occupants. When we showed up, she initially kept her distance (hanging out at a neighbor's place instead), but after a few months, she warmed up to us. When the first freeze of the winter came at the end of '97, Jenny and I agreed to let Squeaker spend the night indoors, just for that one night. Apart from a couple of forays into the back yard, she never went outdoors again.

Squeaker was already an adult when we took her in—our best estimate is that she was born in 1990. She was compact, stout, and stiff-legged, never jumping but frequently clambering up onto whatever surface she wanted to occupy. She enjoyed surprisingly forceful head-butts, and never played with toys when anyone was watching.

A lot happened to me over the intervening years—one marriage ended, another begun. I broke my pelvis. I sold the house on Avenue G and bought the one I live in now with Gwen. Squeaker was with me through all of that.

She was not unmarked by time. In 2004, she developed a growth on one foot that ultimately required two toes to be amputated. That growth re-appeared on her foot, but never obviously went beyond that.

Over the past few months, her stiffness of leg turned into painful arthritis. She developed hyperthyroidism, meaning her pulse was always racing, she was constantly hungry, and losing weight. I put her on a painkiller for the arthritis. She still seemed to be generally happy, but I realized she was in the endgame.

Over just the past few days, she declined precipitously. She lost her appetite and even had trouble drinking water. Her meow, which had always been stentorian and scratchy, became pathetic and weak. She smelled awful. It was time. I had the vet make a housecall to euthanize her. If anything, I should have done it a few days earlier. Her last day was peaceful.

Gwen and I went through this about a year and a half ago with the cat she'd had for even longer, Oscar. It doesn't get easier with practice.

209 - Self reflection

209 - Self reflection

All of this dieting and trying to be more healthy makes me kick myself inside. I've gotten so much more down on myself since I started this and it's really not doing me any good. In my head all I hear is "You can't do it" and "No matter how much you kill yourself for this, you will never lose weight". It's incredibly depressing.

I'm trying to be positive. It's tough. But I'm drinking more water than I ever have now than in my whole life. I walk a lot more without complaining. I eat less junk food and my body will be better for it. I will be happy and move out of my family's house and be on my own with my fiancee. It will work.

I will be happy.

Teenage Waistland: A Former Fat Kid Weighs in on Living Large, Losing Weight, and How Parents Can (and Can't) Help

Ellin's parents got it all wrong when it came to helping her lose weight-but what would have been right? In this fresh, frank, funny look at childhood obesity and its treatment, she journeys through diet culture seeking a better way.

We've been inundated lately with books and articles about childhood obesity. Most offer cultural critique or nutrition and exercise advice-in tones that are alternately appalled and patronizing. Few address the psychological, medical, cultural and developmental complexities affecting overweight kids. The truth is, many parents already know that Whoppers are fattening. What they don't know is how to effectively help an often discouraged, often reluctant kid on what will be a difficult, life-long journey.

Abby Ellin, a journalist and former fat-camper whose parents' attempts to "save her" from fatness proved counterproductive, has had a lifelong interest in figuring out how they might have done it better, and an abiding compassion for overweight kids. In Teenage Waistland she shares the story of her own adolescent struggle with food and weight, and journeys with hope, skepticism, and humor through the landscape of today's diet culture. She visits camps and community programs, and talks to experts, kids and their parents, seeking to answer these questions: What can parents say that kids will hear? Why don't kids exercise more and eat less when they're dying to be thinner? What treatment methods actually work? Willpower, or surrender? Shame, or inspiration? Teenage Waistland is ultimately clarifying and provocative for anyone who's ever wrestled with weight issues. One size does not fit all when it comes to weight loss, and the better we understand that, the more likely we are to be able to help our kids.

The P-51 Mustang is an American single-seat fighter aircraft that the Allied Forces used during World War II and the Korean War. In addition to being economical to produce, P-51’s were fast and highly durable aircraft.
The QuickSilver Mustang 51 HY, “The Resurrected Veteran”, is the result of a fourteen-year reconstruction program. The pain scheme is a flying celebration of this nation’s veterans, and those who give the ultimate sacrifice.

With Vance Breese at the controls, who was one of the most famous test pilots in his day, the XP-51 reached 382 mph, exceeding the P-40's top speed by 25 mph.5 The P-51 was an immediate success and it even outperformed the Spitfire.6 Unique to the P-51 was the laminar flow wing design which was developed by the US National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Contemporary aircraft wings featured a wing cross-section with maximum thickness about a fifth of the way across the wing from the leading edge, with most of the camber on the top of the wing. The laminar flow wing, in contrast, has its maximum thickness well aft from the leading edge, and has almost as much camber on top as on the bottom. This feature reduced turbulent flow across the wing, thereby, reducing drag and increasing speed and range. Drag was also reduced by positioning a ventral radiator underneath the rear of the fuselage, to present the smallest possible fuselage cross section. The British Purchasing Commission was enthusiastic about the plane, and confirmed a production order for 320 Mustang Is. This was later increased by 300 for NA-83s, which differed only in minor details; the British designation was Mustang IA.7 Powered by the 1,100 hp Allison V-1710-39 (F3R) engine, the airplanes performance was only impressive up to 15,000 ft. However, performance would be dramatically improved once the airframe was matched with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. This is not to say that the Allison wasn't a good engine as it performed very well on the Lockheed P-38. The problem with the Allison had more to do with the USAAF's heavy reliance on turbosupercharging. This requirement was impossible to meet for all aircraft, due to a shortage of metal alloys, such as tungsten. There was some experimentation with turbosupercharged P-40s by designer Donaldson R. Berlin and these planes outperformed the Spitfire and Messerschmitt Bf 109.8

With the limitations for fighter duties due to the Allison engine, nevertheless, the Mustang had good ground attack potential, and its high speed at low altitude, made it ideal for tactical reconnaissance. To enhance altitude capabilities, a mockup was devised in England to use the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine in the P-51 airframe. One concept was to locate the new engine behind the cockpit, but this idea was rejected and the Merlin was mounted in the conventional position in the nose. Four airframes were adapted in England to take the Merlin engine. These four planes known as Mustang Xs had deep intakes below the engine for carburetor air. The results of the British tests were passed on to North American. In the meantime, North American had undertaken a similar conversion project and was building two Packard Merlin-powered Mustangs. Level speed improvement was increased 51 mph, to 441 mph. The airframes were strengthened to accommodate the extra power, the ventral radiator was deepened, and the carburetor intake was moved from above the nose to below, to accommodate the Merlin updraft induction system.11 Even before the Army's Merlin powered Mustangs had flown, The US Army ordered 2,200 of the more powerful fighters. For a short time, this model was designated P-78, then redesignated as P-51B. 25 P-51Bs and 275 P-51Cs were given the British designation Mustang III. The California Mustangs were known as the P-51B-NA and the Dallas, Texas facility produced the P-51C-NT.12 The Merlin-powered P-5lB and its Dallas-built twin, the P-51C, began operations in December 1943.
A further improvement to the Mustang was introduced when a graceful teardrop canopy was installed to eliminate the dangerous blind area created by the faired cockpit. First tested on two P-51Bs, they became standard on the P-51D and all later models. 280 P-51Ds were given the RAF designation Mustang IV. The P-51D became the version produced in the greatest quantities, 7,954 being completed. The P-51D model carried six .50 cal. machine guns instead of the four mounted in the P-51Bs. Other refinements, such as moving the wing forward slightly and providing

Diet Patches-- Do They Really Work For Weight Loss?

With the obesity epidemic that is going on today, a diet patch seems like it could be a miracle cure.

A diet patch is a small self-adhesive square something like a bandage that you place somewhere on your body that is supposed to help you melt the pounds off by suppressing the appetite and increasing the metabolism. Often the ingredients are the same as those found in weight loss pills, but the ingredients in the patch enter the body through the skin.

WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH

WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH

The White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) is a small songbird of the nuthatch family which breeds in old-growth woodland across much of temperate North America. It is a stocky bird, with a large head, short tail, powerful bill and strong feet. The upperparts are pale blue-gray, and the face and underparts are white. It has a black cap and a chestnut lower belly. The nine subspecies differ mainly in the color of the body plumage.

Like other nuthatches, the White-breasted Nuthatch forages for insects on trunks and branches, and is able to move head-first down trees. Seeds form a substantial part of its winter diet, as do acorns and hickory nuts that were stored by the bird in the fall. The nest is in a hole in a tree, and the breeding pair may smear insects around the entrance as a deterrent to squirrels. Adults and young may be killed by hawks, owls and snakes, and forest clearance may lead to local habitat loss, but this is a common species with no major conservation concerns over most of its range.

Description

Like other members of its genus, the White-breasted Nuthatch has a large head, short tail, short wings, a powerful bill and strong feet; it is 13–14 cm (5–6 in) long, with a wingspan of 20–27 cm (8–11 in) and a weight of 18–30 g (0.64–1.06 oz).[3]

The adult male of the nominate subspecies, S. c. carolinensis, has pale blue-gray upperparts, a glossy black cap (crown of the head), and a black band on the upper back. The wing coverts and flight feathers are very dark gray with paler fringes, and the closed wing is pale gray and black, with a thin white wing bar. The face and the underparts are white. The outer tail feathers are black with broad diagonal white bands across the outer three feathers, a feature readily visible in flight.[2]

The female has, on average, a narrower black back band, slightly duller upperparts and buffer underparts than the male. Her cap may be gray, but many females have black caps, and cannot be reliably distinguished from the male in the field. In the northeastern United States, at least 10% of females have black caps, but the proportion rises to 40–80% in the Rocky Mountains, Mexico and the southeastern U.S. Juveniles are similar to the adult, but duller plumaged.[2]

Like other nuthatches, this is a noisy species with a range of vocalizations. The male's mating song is a rapid nasal qui-qui-qui-qui-qui-qui-qui. The contact call between members of a pair, given most frequently in the fall and winter is a thin squeaky nit, uttered up to 30 times a minute. A more distinctive sound is a shrill kri repeated rapidly with mounting anxiety or excitement kri-kri-kri-kri-kri-kri-kri-kri; the Rocky Mountains and Great Basin subspecies have a higher, faster yididitititit call,[2] and Pacific birds a more nasal beeerf.[7]

Three other, significantly smaller, nuthatches have ranges which overlap that of White-breasted, but none has white plumage completely surrounding the eye. Further distinctions are that the Red-breasted Nuthatch has a black eye line and reddish underparts, and the Brown-headed and Pygmy Nuthatches each have a brown cap, and a white patch on the nape of the neck.[7]
[edit] Geographical variation

The White-breasted Nuthatch has nine subspecies, although the differences are small and change gradually across the range. The subspecies are sometimes treated as three groups based on close similarities in morphology, habitat usage, and vocalizations. These groups cover eastern North America, the Great Basin and central Mexico, and the Pacific coastal regions.[7] The subspecies of the western interior have the darkest upperparts, and eastern S. c. carolinensis has the palest back.[2] The eastern form also has a thicker bill and broader dark cap stripe than the interior and Pacific races. The calls of the three groups differ, as described above.[7]

DISTRIBUTION
The breeding habitat of the White-breasted Nuthatch is woodland across North America, from southern Canada to northern Florida and southern Mexico. In the eastern part of its range, its preferred habitat is old-growth open deciduous or mixed forest, including orchards, parks, suburban gardens and cemeteries; it is found mainly in the lowlands, although it breeds at 1,675 m (5,500 ft) altitude in Tennessee. In the west and Mexico, this nuthatch is found in open montane pine-oak woodlands, and nesting occurs at up to 3,200 m (10,500 ft) altitude in Nevada, California and Mexico.[2] Pinyon-juniper and riverside woodlands may be used locally where available.[8] The White-breasted Nuthatch is the only North American nuthatch usually found in deciduous trees; Red-breasted, Pygmy and Brown-headed Nuthatches prefer pines.[7]

The presence of mature or decaying trees with holes suitable for nesting is essential, and trees such as oak, beech and hickory are favored in the east since they provide edible seeds.[2] Although suitable habitat is distributed continentally, it is discontinuous, and the separate populations

Day 126/365: RIP, Rick Rypien

Day 126/365: RIP, Rick Rypien

Every year, it's inevitable that the hockey world loses some of its own - after all, the NHL has been around for nearly 100 years, and that makes for a lot of alumni.

It is far more shocking when players still in the prime of their careers are taken from the sport, their friends and family, their fans, their lives. Yet this years has had a dark pall, as three NHL players died - at least one by their own hands - since January.

The first was Tom Cavanagh, 28, who played most of his career in the AHL but did appear in 18 games for the San Jose Sharks. Cavanagh died via suicide in Providence, RI.

Derek Boogaard, also 28, known by the nickname "Boogeyman", had played both for the Minnesota Wild and the New York Rangers. Boogaard's death was ruled as an accidential overdose of a combination of alcohol and oxycodone, a painkiller. Despite Boogaard's reputation as one of the most intimidating players in the NHL, he was a beloved fan favorite on both teams he'd played for. It was revealed that Boogaard was in the NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse & Behavioral Health Program prior to his death for

On August 15th, the news broke that Rick Rypien, 27, who had recently signed with the Winnepeg Jets, was found dead in his apartment in Alberta. Although Rypien died as a member of the Jets organization, he had spent his entire career with the Vancouver Canucks, both in their farm system and on their NHL team, so despite carrying the "former Canuck" label, he will always be remembered as a Canuck.

The Canucks issued a statement on Monday:

“It is with tremendous sadness that the Vancouver Canucks confirm the passing of Rick Rypien. Rick has been a beloved member of the Canucks family for the past six years. Rick was a great teammate and friend to our players, coaches and staff. We send our deepest condolences to the Rypien family at this most difficult time.”

His new team, the Jets, also issued a statement:

"We are deeply saddened to confirm Rick's passing. As many people are aware, he had strong ties to True North Sports & Entertainment, the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club, the former Manitoba Moose Hockey Club and the Vancouver Canucks. We would like to express our sincere sympathies to the Rypien family as well as Rick's friends. We also appreciate all of the support that has come pouring in from Rick's fans. Rick was a talented player with an extremely bright future. His hunger for the game made him a valued team member both on and off the ice. This loss has impacted us as more than just a hockey team."

After the news broke, Twitter lit up with commentary from players and fans alike, expressing sympathy, regrets, and respect for Rypien. A few samples:

Andrew Ladd / WPG (@aladd16) - Sad to hear about Rick Rypien. I was looking forward to playing with him in Winnipeg. Thoughts are with his family and friends #RIPRypien

Ryan Jones / EDM (@jonesry28) - Sad to hear about the loss of another great guy... condolences to the friends and family of Rick Rypien. RIP

Mike Commodore / DET (@commie22) - RIP Rick Rypien. He was a warrior. Hit me so hard my eyes couldn't focus for 30 secs. Not sure if it was a left or right. #hitmewithboth

George Parros / ANA (@Stache16) - Damn... Rick Rypien will be missed. He was the nicest guy, hung with him a few times in VAN...tough as all hell too. Thoughts to his fam

Rypien had taken two personal leave of absences from the Canucks; after returning to pro hockey this spring, he had signed a 1-year contract with the Jets. Local police termed it as "non-suspicious, sudden death"; News 1130 in Vancouver initially reported it as a suicide and later revised it to match police reports.

It was rumored that Rypien might be battling mental issues. If speculation turns out to be true and Rypien took his own life, it shines a light on what has been a dark issue for the NHL this year.

While Rypien was widely regarded for his toughness, he gained a bit of notoriety early last season during a game at Minneapolis' Xcel Center, grabbing a fan in the stands, for which he was suspended for several games. He took his second LOA not long after this incident; and was eventually sent down to finish out the season with the Manitoba Moose.

Depression all too easily gets brushed aside and is not regarded seriously enough until something as drastic as a person taking their own life. People who do not suffer from it think that others can "just snap out of it" or can easily be cheered up, but there are many different levels of depression, and it is probably one of the most misunderstood ailments that is far more common than most realize.

You may have friends or family that you suspect are depressed but find it hard to broach the subject with them. People who are mildly depressed - those who are still functional despite their internal struggles - are very good at hiding their symptoms to outsiders
