Farm spring house

This old abandoned out building on the Crane Hollow farm is almost glowing with the warm colors of an autumn that has stretched into December. Just a couple of days to winter but close enough today. The unpainted wood has taken on the patina of the ages and boasts the grainy structure of the trees themselves. The long slant of the sun is a warm color adding to the warm tones. Eddie thinks this old shed might have been a spring house for the farm. There is a cutout in the concrete floor in the close right-hand side. There was a drain cut from the cutout through the north wall. I expect they cooled milk cans in the water bearing depression whether they milked here or not.

The bitter clouds are slipping down from the Rockies in the distance. Never mind that today, the temperatures are survivable if one stands in the sun. I would prefer more haze or less but that won't bother detail shots on the farm today. It is easily accessible so that I can return any time I am moved. There is an enormous amount of shooting to be done here. This is life in the rust belt of America. A farmer would have been up early to do the milking even in the bitter wind-driven snows. This farm is now abandoned since any soil was turned or the barnyard animals fed. I bet the old tractor would struggle turning the native plants that have return with so much as a hefty two bottom plow.

I used the tripod with the camera today so that I could still set the lens opening up to f/22 @ 1/20th/sec @ 29mm on the 24-70mm f/2.8G Nikkor Normal-Zoom, a really crisp lens when kept steady... and clean. I have several new shots I burned off today.

Stalking This House Again

I like the snow all over and around it. Also, this past Fall someone cut down all those bushes out front. It's nice that we can see the porch now.

It was a long day out with a friend.. I cant get the song 'Come Away With Me' from Norah Jones out of my brain.. keeps on playing in my head.. I cant stop humming to the tune.. It was such a relaxing and sexy song.. Everytime I listen to it, it transform to another different world.. with such calmness..

I came back at 2am+.. totally inspired about the song.. I had to, I had to put it down into a photograph..

Came back, I quickly set up my tripod and start feeling the 'Come Away With Me' inside me.. feeling the song so much that I had to let it out of my system.. I was feeling the song so much, it was in my DNA!..

My mood at that time was.. I need to spend time alone with someone dear, away from everybody else..away from everything.. exactly what I need at this moment..

I had to let out this artistic creativity that suddenly just emerged out of nowhere..

It was such an amazing feelings.. I finished experimenting at 4am.. feeling happy and go to bed, finally.

Sometimes I wonder if people do feel the same way when the creativity just pop up out of nowhere?

Tuckshop Restaurant

The Tuckshop is a new restaurant in Phoenix. It is small and in a neighbourhood rather than in the main areas of Scottsdale or Central Phoenix. It has a nice feel to it. The crowd was very artsy (as opposed to the Scottsdale crowd which can dip into douchey at times). The neighbourhood it is in is one that is gentrifying. The place is very modern in a Phoenix style. Open floor plan, polished concrete floors, industrial windows without curtains or embellishments. Very nicely done. The food is in the style of 'sharing' but without the smaller portions that come with Tapas restaurants. I really liked it. The food was great, the feel very comfortable and the whole place was nicely done. +1 will dine there again.

This is a photocopy we were handed by our lecturer to give us an idea of what the rooms were used for while the house was lived in. What was the kitchen, Kitchen Maid's room and Cook's room is now the gift shop - with the splendid range still in place; all the larders are now the restaurant with the gun room being the walk through portion where you choose and order; and the flight of rooms beyond are the new kitchen. On the other side the group of rooms opposite the larders are now toilets; the Housekeeper's Room is the lecture room and everything beyond that point is the Regimental Museum. The rooms near the entrance are used for storage.

Looks are deceiving in the photo, taken from the inside of the sheltered cave and looking out: Short as I am, I had to crouch down while inside.

As the marker says:

The spacious flat floor, shade, protection from the wind and rain, and cross-ventilation provided by other openings in the rear of the tube made it a very attractive location [and this one in particular was very close to the riches of the ocean, while safely inland from shoreline surges]. A few mats on the floor and a small cooking fire would make this a comfortable shelter, even today.”

I can attest to the cooler comfort: Stepping inside was quite a relief from the hot sun.

Mammoet Stoof, FTF Truck

Ancient history! Mammoet was founded in 1971 by a merger of Stoof Transport and schipping company Goedkoop en van Wezel. The two combined made Mammoet and were part of the Nedloyd Group. At first the Stoof department was called Mammoet Stoof, later on this turned into Mammoet. (eventhough I still see the name Mammoet Stoof popup every once and a while).

Another interesting thing about this picture of Mammoet Stoof is that fact that it's an FTF truck.FTF stands for Floor Truck Factory. A Dutch truck company that madeheavy and special trucks. Unfortunatly FTF stopped producing trucks in 1995. Nowadays they only produce trailers.

Two guys stood on my armoire downstairs while another helped them lift it up, then two guys up in the loft grabbed it and hoisted it over the railing. It almost looked too easy! The best part is, after 2 weeks of sleeping on concrete then hardwood floors, I got to sleep in my bed.

Monday Reality

Left hotel a bit late...not too bad. Tried to get on the subway but there was a line up the stairs. We were going to take a bus, but then we got a cab. 10 euros to take a cab two metro stops...I sort of think that wasn't strictly kosher...but maybe it was. it was still fun. We got to go under a tunnel that we saw yesterday during our ordeal march of being lost.

the idea was to catch the capucin crypts on the way to the vatican. But they were closed...still. so we slipped down back into the subway. We had used our single use tickets when we were turned back by the line at the Termini station, but we decided that the moral constraints were met, so we slipped through and re-used the tickets to get to the vatican. AFter all, we had gone through the gate, but we hadn't gotten on a train...

so the train left at 4:48ish, maybe 4:47...basically right on time ...

Off we rushed to the Vatican museum. We arrived at 10:00...and the english tour was at 10:30, so just enough time to get oriented and rest a bit before the ordeal by marbel floor!

We had a nice tour guide. First she showed us a sort of parchement view of the sistine chapel-two rulls of text and pictures with details of the different scenes. She would wind it down to get the next view.

This was fascinating...I am phenomenally underinformed of art and cultural matters...it is almost a cliche to say that, but egads it it true.

on the other hand, there are things we know today that were unknown 200 years ago. Amazingly...apparantly the whole forum area was under dirt until 18-something. So much dirt that only the tops of the columns were exposed. and even now much remains.

The archeologists cringe over the techniques used to clear what is now exposed. There have been several recent archeological 'campaigns' among the ruins of palatine hill that have excavated pre-roman huts. one of the write ups discussed the findings of 27 flakes of flint, indicating tool maing. So infering thngs based on bits of things found...which is the whole point of archeology.

And it made me realize that they are not done excavating Rome Roma...an odd thing to realize, since only a moment's consideration would reveal how obvious that is! There are Indian mounds that the archeologists are intentionally leaving alone for now, with the expressed plan of letting future archeologists examine them when they have better techniques.

my ears are popping...and the gps lost its lock...I then look out and realize we are going through a tunnel. ah...sense is made.

maybe...perhaps it wasn't a tunnel...I can't tell. several more episodes of pressure changes are occuring.

There are sliding head rests on the cabin walls in back of the seats. they are padded and have vertical supports so that you can lean on them to sleep without falling into the window, or onto your neighbor. they slide up and down to allow you to adjust to your preferences.

We didn't see the capucini crypt, because it was closed, and it was getting dark as we got on the train, but we are doing pretty well.

The vatican tour took two hours...and it seemed that we were moving much of the time. they have these slick radio receivors so you can hear the tour guide even if you are in the next room back.

I had a strong response to a tapestry depicting the slaughter of the chilidren by herod. One baby is being held, barely, by its mother and a soldier has a dagger to the child's heart. The baby is about to die. Other mother's are using their bodies to shield their infants. it is truly horrible.

damn! the pressure changes are really frequent, and amazingly annoying.

I enjoyed the museum, duh, and the Sistine chapel...and then we climbed the dome! I loved that! I truly loved it. We got to the top and I could see radio vatican and the quiet parts of the vatican and various 'stuff.' I don't know why, but seeing vatican radio made me happy.

We had a lovely roll top bath in the hotel in the middle of the room and wanted to get it in to a photo of sorts so took the mirror off the wall and leant it on the floor and using some off camera flash to light her face for the reflection in the mirror (and the bump). Oh and of course ensure the bubbles were suitably placed!

During the NYC Pool art fair in March, held at the Gershwin Hotel on East 27th Street, visitors were invited to sit on my bed and draw pictures on the theme of family. Over the course of three days 160 people took part and the drawings were hung in the bathroom, eventually filling the walls from floor to ceiling, including inside the (dry) shower stall. 150 of the drawings are now on my website. The Movable Studio will be making another appearance in a picnic variation at Figment New York, the arts festival held on Governors Island in New York Harbor June 11th, 12th and 13th. Visitors are invited to join me on the grass of Nolan Park where the studio will be spread out on picnic blankets from 11AM to 5 PM. Nolan Park was home to officer's families and the beautiful clapboard houses still stand beneath shade trees around a village green. Come imagine what family life was like here and draw your version.

Coffee is available on Governor's Island at Pyramid Cafe next to pier 101, but all things considered you might prefer to bring your favorite brew in a thermos.

Basement green floor

Pulling up the carpet in the basement led us to discover a floor that was badly in need of some help. There was a layer of green paint, covered with red paint, and whenever water touched it, the green paint bubbled up and dissolved. Phill spent several hours with a can of stripper to no avail. Michelle questioned every paint and flooring supplier she could find, and all told her that she must be dreaming because paint didn't dissolve. She suggested the miracle Sears basement floor paint as a quick fix, much to the dismay of every supplier she talked to, all of whom told her that wall paint could NOT be used on floors. She maintained that the paint didn't know whether it was on a wall or a floor, so several coats of wall paint were slathered on the floor, making the whole area a snowy white for several days. Then Mike turned the faucet on and green paint promptly bubbled through again, but another layer of paint did wonders.

Water rushes into basement.

Water gushes in through cracks in the back door, and down the stairs to the basement. This is where Anthony's lesson studio, many cases, and overstock is stored. We lost everything in the basement...but the water was held to 5 ft deep and did not cause damage on the sales floor other than tiles and my computer.
