On June 25, 2005, a newly constructed glass floor extension on the north side of the tower's observation deck opened. Consisting of four large panes of glass, it is about 36 feet (11 m) long and 5 feet (1.5 m) wide. When standing on the glass, one can look straight down on 9th Avenue South and Centre Street.

Finished Floor Textures

The intent was to show the inherent qualities of the house, and stop hiding the defects and age as residents have done over the last 110 years. The floors were a perfect exercise in realizing this, with ample character and interesting markings throughout.

After refinishing the floors, theses are some of the fine grain textures that emerged. Top left shows light cutting from a circular saw. Top right and bottom left show some of the distressing of the material over time, a combination of floor tacks, adhesives, smoke, and water. Bottom right shows a corner detail of the oak floors with walnut inlay that was installed over the original Fir flooring (other three images).

Floor Project - End of Day 1

This section of wood was easy to pull up. For some reason the adhesive did not stick to the concrete very well. Unfortunately, this was the only section like this.

For many years I worked for companies that did special effects or made software for the effects industry. Due to laziness on my part, I was not networking enough and I paid the price in 2003 when I found myself laid off and without a community to help me back in. After that I spent a few months flailing about trying to hook myself back in to that industry. My last major attempt I made was going to SigGraph to schmooze and look for work. SigGraph is a small industry convention, a bit like a tiny Comicon without the costumes or dealers. Unfortunately, being in the San Diego convention center, it still had the same amount of walking.

In every way this trip should have been a gigantic hint that I needed to move on to a different industry. The real deal was going to be the parties and after swinging invites I planned on running around and network like my career depended on it. But that was for the evening, during the day I met with old co-workers and chatted with animators and shoved my resume to every major studio that was looking for render farm technicians. Where they looking for a render farm technicians? I would shove my resume on the pile anyway.

When the show floor closed, I ran to the bathroom to pee and freshen up a bit before trudging to the various nighttime events in old town San Diego. I made a beeline to the first stall I could find and unzipped. At that exact moment I saw something fly up in an arc, slowly into in the air and then hit the floor with a clatter before rolling away to a pocket universe for lost buttons.

CRAP! What that what I thought it was? It took several moments for the situation to sink in. This was not a good day to leave the belt at home. I could just feel the panic and embarrassment well up in me that I had to work at pushing away. Do I just give up and go home with my pants dragging on the floor? This should have been a hint the universe was telling me I needed a change in my life. Being a practical person, I pee as I think of possible solutions. I call upon my inner MacGyver as I rip apart my SigGraph badge. It was luck that the badge had a pin style fastener that I could use that to fasten my pants back together. I Pull my shirt out and let it cover up my waist to hide the patch, it was a thankfully long shirt and I went for the casual look for the parties.

The night was full of loud music, darkened bar's and schmoozing vendors. I think the biggest problem I had was the only people I knew that I could have gotten a job with were based in Texas and there was no way I would move from California. No work came from that weekend; in fact no major jobs would come for another year and a half. It would be a time of extreme financial pain but in the end I was much better for it. As I now look back at that period of my life I realize how unhappy I was. There are times when it's a good idea to listen to your pants.

There is an old joke where a young man is listening to a circus worker complaining about shoveling piles of elephant dung. Deciding to help, the man suggests to the worker that he should quit. The circus worker looks stunned and es:

"What? Give up show business?!?"

Sealy Floorplan After(ish)

So here's the latest version of the floor plan. We've gone through about 5 versions and this is the one i like the most... master suite downstairs, 2 bdrs upstairs. I think the kitchen is a bit small but this is the best option so far. We had toyed with expanding towards the back french door (taking out that other wall) but it looked awkward plus we'd lose the mudroom and would be removing a ton of supporting walls. My bathroom layouts are a bit awkward - the architect did a much better version of them in his last drawing so this will still be tweaked a bit. I've been doing these drawings myself :) Oh - and in the master bath the toilet is actually under the stairs in a water closet type concept. i just couldn't depict it with the software i'm using. Also the way we've expanded onto the front porch does necessitate that we add a wrap around porch in the future. we just can't afford it yet.

These is actually a picture I found online. These are very old terracotta tiles from France. They were used in barns and outbuildings on farms. They're usually waxed inside, or even varnished today.

They're called 'tomettes'.

I like the way the colours vary between the tiles. I also think they'll be nice and cool in summer.

I'm thinking about these for the downstairs floor, but they could be too dark. The building and complex are very late 70s brown brick and tiles, so while it continues that theme inside, it could all be a bit BROWN for us.

Day 49/365 "Where Were You, When everything was falling apart"

ok day school was ok i was getting a little annoyed with everyone cause i was trying to concentrate and they were bothering me and i'm so sick of me doing all the work and everyone copying it (besides Mark and Emy who actually do there fucking work) like seriously do ur own fucking work i'm so annoyed with it, like its ok a couple times but every program they copy it uhh ok done with my rant lol. everything wa ok 6th period and then we had to get our stuff and go to homeroom where from there we had to evacuate the building for 45 minutes omg my legs were numb i was soooooooooo cold my legs were still cold 8th period but anyway the reason we had to that was because i guess in the 4th floor girls bathroom it had todays date, BOMB, and a time so they had to evacuate the building to check it, i wish we would have had the option to leave cuz we were right where all the seniors park and i could have easily gotten a ride home. so we went back to class middle of 7th, then off to lab which was cool cuz we had to heat up a bolt and it was like orange it was sooooo cool i have it again tomorrow i think i'm gonna take my pic with it tomorrow. anyway after school i watched the real world and took a nap, then i went to jennas cuz eddie had a game (which he lost 5-3) so i chilled there for an hour then we went through the drive thru at mcdonalds and went to dance where we added on a bunch of shit in both dances and shes kinda making jazz a little hip-hoppie which is weird for me cuz i am not a hip hop dancer lol now i'm listening to music and freezing its soooooooooo cold out

The ONDOL is a conventional floor heating system in Korea. Eight healthy college students volunteered as the subjects to investigate the buttock responses to contact with 10 types of the ONDOL covering materials: mortar, plywood, artificial marble, PVC, rubber foam, tempered glass, steel, insulation mortar, carpet, and aluminum. The temperature of water supply flowing into the floor coil underneath the floor surface was altered from 15 to 40^oC at 5^oC intervals. Floor surface temperature, skin temperature including buttock and subjective thermal sensation were monitored. The study revealed that the lower the contact coefficient of covering material, the more stable the temperature fluctuations in the floor surface and the buttock skin were. The floor finishing material should be chosen by the heat flux based on the heating load, and the friendship to human body. Using regression analysis, the neutral temperature of the buttock was determined at 32.6^oC.

The district complements the Audubon Terrace Historic District that adjoins it to the southeast.

Audubon Park is named for John James Audubon (1785-1851), the famous naturalist and illustrator of birds, who purchased the picturesque estate overlooking the Hudson River in 1841, shortly after publishing what would be his most famous work, Birds in America. Washington Heights was still largely secluded at the time, comprised primarily of farms and woodlands, and the location of country estates for a succession of wealthy families starting in the late 18th century. The roughly 20-acre estate came to be known as Audubon Park in the 1860s when Audubon’s widow began selling off parcels of the estate for the development of free-standing single family homes.

Following the arrival of the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue subway line in 1904, Washington Heights rapidly developed with apartment buildings and accompanying commercial structures. The apartment houses within the historic district were constructed between 1905 and 1932 and were marketed as modern and elegant addresses in the tradition of the grand apartment houses in the neighborhoods of the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights to the south.

They were generally given names intended to recall the area’s history and impart a sense of stature – such as the Grinnell, named for an early local estate owner, or Hispania Hall, a reference to the nearby Hispanic Society of America – or names evoking romantic and exotic associations – such as the Cragmoor, the Rhinecliff, or the Cortez. Among the architects who designed buildings in the historic district are several local firms well-known for their work on apartment houses, including George F. Pelham, Schwartz & Gross, George & Edward Blum, Denby & Nute, and Neville & Bagge.

Other styles seen within the historic district include the Medieval Revival style Kannawah at 614 West 157th Street, which features elaborate molded terra-cotta window surrounds, stylized pinnacles, and keystones, and the Arts and Crafts style Vauxhall at 780 Riverside Drive, which features creative use of faience tile friezes and decorative brickwork. Along the west side of Riverside Drive and along Riverside Drive West sit several fortress-like beige-brick apartment buildings designed in a Medieval Revival style, featuring castellated parapet walls and molded terra-cotta arched entryways.

Went to Shunt for my friend's birthday and this one technically is day 51 as it is after midnight.

Just saw the colour and movement all around so found a place to put my little camera and took about 5 shots preferring this one the most as the others were either too dark or over exposed.

I made meatballs from scratch with no recipe tonight - now for those that know me well they would tell you that is one mean feat!! Seriously I don't cook, I could do a recipe from a book 100 times and still need to look at it the 101st time! And I just don't know what ingredient goes with what! The greatest compliment was that my brother ate 3 of them when he got home (or maybe he felt obliged - lol!)....come to think of it, he has been in the bathroom a long while since he ate them.....;)

I know....I'm not wearing makeup.....but I'm SO proud of my new floor, I just had to have a picture taken with it!

This is one of my "before" pictures. I'm now trying to lose weight with a low carb diet.

Wow! A Floor!

It is amazing to me to see the difference this floor makes in my craft room.

And I know my allergies will not be as much of a problem, since that filthy carpet is out of the house!
