This really made my day. I'd parked up, having seen an old Astra Cabriolet in a driveway, and as I opened the car door I glanced across the road and saw just the very back of this thing sticking out past another car in the car park - I actually thought it was some 70s American car, Rolls Royce never entered my head. I've never seen anything like this before.

future-poo biscuits
For the non anglophile viewer, McVities Digestive Biscuits are a staple part of any good diet here in the UK and Ireland.
When I first told Kristi about them she was a bit put off by their name, which I explained was a historical anomaly from when they were believed to aid digestion. This didn't seem to help sell them to K, and she titled them future-poo biscuits. The name has stuck.
Obviously there was much laughing when we discovered them in the deli at The Farmer's Market on Fairfax, LA.
They're available here for the princely sum of $4.75 + tax. When that is adjusted into real money, it represents about a 200% mark up in price. And the best things about it is, they're still worth every penny. Future-poo or no, they're delicious and there is no better partner for a cup of tea.
Gas Rises
The latest government measure of demand for gasoline in the U.S. shows that overall, drivers have cut back gas purchases by almost 2 percent. That kind of significant downward move in demand, coupled with rising stockpiles of oil in the U.S., mean prices of crude should be headed downward. But don't get too excited yet. Prices at the pump likely won't come down as quickly as the futures prices for oil. Economists say that historically, gas retailers will let their margins expand a bit before passing those savings onto consumers.

Pitru Paksh
149,264 items / 1,143,755 views
From Wikipedia
Pitru Paksha (Sanskrit: ???? ????), also spelt as Pitr paksha or Pitri paksha, (literally "fortnight of the ancestors") is a 16–lunar day period when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors (Pitrs), especially through food offerings. The period is also known as Pitri Pokkho (Bengali: ???? ????),Pitru Pakshya(oriya:???? ????)Sola Shraddha ("sixteen shraddhas"), Kanagat, Jitiya, Mahalaya Paksha and Apara paksha.[1][2][3]
Pitru Paksha is considered by Hindus to be inauspicious, given the death rite performed during the ceremony, known as Shraddha or tarpan. In southern and western India, it falls in the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada (September–October), beginning with the full moon day (Purnima) that occurs immediately after the Ganesh festival and ending with the new moon day known as Sarvapitri amavasya, Mahalaya amavasya or simply Mahalaya. In North India and Nepal, this period corresponds to the dark fortnight of the month Ashwin, instead of Bhadrapada.
According to Hindu mythology, the souls of three preceding generations of one's ancestor reside in Pitru–loka, a realm between heaven and earth. This realm is governed by Yama, the god of death, who takes the soul of a dying man from earth to Pitru–loka. When a person of the next generation dies, the first generation shifts to heaven and unites with God, so Shraddha offerings are not given. Thus, only the three generations in Pitru–loka are given Shraddha rites, in which Yama plays a significant role.[4] According to the sacred Hindu epics (Itihasa), at the beginning of Pitru Paksha, the sun enters the zodiac sign of Virgo (Kanya). Coinciding with this moment, it is believed that the spirits leave Pitru–loka and reside in their descendants' homes for a month until the sun enters the next zodiac—Scorpio (Vrichchhika)—and there is a full moon. Hindus are expected to propitiate the ancestors in the first half, during the dark fortnight.[2][5]
When the legendary donor Karna died in the epic Mahabharata war, his soul transcended to heaven, where he was offered gold and jewels as food. However, Karna needed real food to eat and asked Indra, the lord of heaven, the reason for serving gold as food. Indra told Karna that he had donated gold all his life, but had never donated food to his ancestors in Shraddha. Karna said that since he was unaware of his ancestors, he never donated anything in their memory. To make amends, Karna was permitted to return to earth for a 16–day period, so that he could perform Shraddha and donate food and water in their memory. This period is now known as Pitru Paksha.[6] In some legends, Yama replaces Indra.[7]
The fifteen days of Malaya Paksha consists of 15 Tithi (also called Thithi). They are Pratipat, Dvitiya, Tritiya, Chaturthi, Panchami, Shashti, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, Dasami, Ekadasi, Dvadasi, Trayodasi, Chaturdashi, Amavasya (new moon). According to Hindu mythology, every individual's who wants to perform this Pitru Tharpanam, they should do it on the same day of their ancestor died which will fall within any one of these fifteen days.
[edit] Importance
The performance of Shraddha by a son during Pitru Paksha is regarded as a compulsory by Hindus, to ensure that the soul of the ancestor goes to heaven. In this context, the scripture Garuda Purana says, "there is no salvation for a man without a son".[4] The scriptures preach that a householder should propitiate ancestors (Pitris), along with the gods (devas), ghosts (bhutas) and guests.[1] The scripture Markandeya Purana says that if the ancestors are content with the shraddhas, they will bestow health, wealth, knowledge and longevity, and ultimately heaven and salvation (moksha) upon the performer.[2]
The performance of Sarvapitri amavasya rites can also compensate a forgotten or neglected annual shraddha ceremony, which should ideally coincide with the death anniversary of the deceased. According to Sharma, the ceremony is central to the concept of lineages. Shraddha involves oblations to three preceding generations—by reciting their names—as well as to the mythical lineage ancestor (gotra). A person thus gets to know the names of six generations (three preceding generation, his own and two succeeding generations—his sons and grandsons) in his life, reaffirming lineage ties.[1] Anthropologist Usha Menon of Drexel University presents a similar idea—that Pitru Paksha emphasises the fact that the ancestors and the current generation and their next unborn generation are connected by blood ties. The current generation repays their debt to the ancestors in the Pitru Paksha. This debt is considered of utmost importance along with a person's debt to his gurus and his parents.[8]
When and where
The shraddha is performed on the specific lunar day during the Pitru Paksha, when the ancestor—usually a parent or paternal grandparent—died. There are exceptions to the lunar day rule; special days are
DOUBLE-SIDED WOODEN PENDANT - ORANGE FAIRY, on organza necklace with sterling silver components, in a complementing gift box
With this pendant, I used lovely Belgian artisanal craft paper - I've made it on wood, with painted details, small findings and tiny beads to add texture – I then coated it in a crystal resin high gloss sealer for a secure and lustrous finish.
My wooden pendants are DOUBLE-SIDED (see the photo:), so you can actually have two different necklaces. Colours on both sides complement each other in a subtle way, and I make sure that the organza ribbon goes well with both designs.
It comes with complementing organza ribbon necklace with sterling silver/silver plated components and you will receive it in a beautiful matching gift box, hand decorated by me to complement the necklace and make a lovely and unique gift. I enjoy making different gift boxes, so they might vary from the photo, but they will always be made to match the necklace. I HAVE JUST MADE SOME LOVELY LONG TIN BOXES (SEE THE LAST PHOTO). On top of it, I will gift wrap the box in a very special and elegant way, with a little hand-made and calligraphically written card with the name of my shop and anything extra you might wish.
My wooden pendants measure 4,5x3 cm (1.8"x1.2") and hang from a sterling silver jump ring. The organza necklace is 60 cm (23.6") long, with sterling silver clasp - I can happily change it to any other length you might have in mind. It can easily be transformed into a choker.
Please feel free to convo me with any specific wishes you might have - I will be happy to help!
Each of my pendants is unique - due to their handmade nature, they may slightly vary from the photograph.
Thank you.

Shelbyville, Tenn.---200th Bicentennial Birthday Festival--July 17, 2010
The Bedford County Courthouse at Shelbyville, Tenn.
Shelbyville, Tennessee, the county seat for Bedford County, was established by an Act of the Tennessee Legislature, on November 14, 1809, however the town was not located on the high banks of the Duck River until May 2, 1810. The settlement was named for Col. Isaac Shelby (1750-1826), one of the heroes of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War and first governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. While the Acts do not specify who Shelbyville was named for, old references and local tradition name Col. Isaac Shelby. The Tennessee Legislature in the Acts of 1809 named John Atkinson, William Woods, Barkley Martin, Howel Dawdy and Daniel McKissick as commissioners for locating the permanent county seat for Bedford County. Nine days later, on November 23, Benjamin Bradford and John Lane were appointed additional commissioners. The 1809 Act served as a guideline to be used by the commissioners in locating the county seat, enacting power to commence locating on January 1, 1810, a site on Duck River within two miles of the center of Bedford County. It was enacted to purchase 100 acres and lay said land off into lots to be sold at public sale.
Amos Balch in whose home the courts of Bedford County were presently being held, about two miles southwest of present day Shelbyville, and the Galbreath family each offered fifty acres of adjacent land as a donation for the site of Shelbyville.
During the same time, Clement Cannon, Sr. (1783-1860) a citizen of Williamson County, Tennessee, had learned of the Tennessee Assembly's action. Having an alert mind and a profitable idealogical value of land, especially if a town site was located within the center, Cannon, a brother of future Tennessee governor Newton Cannon, packed on thousand dollars in silver in his saddle bags one early morning in March of 1810, and rode horseback to Cabarrus County, North Carolina. While in North Carolina, Cannon purchased one thousand acres of land located on Duck River in Bedford County, Tennessee from Robert Washington Smith for one thousand dollars. The transaction took place on March 23, 1810. Upon Cannon's return from North Carolina, he immediately offered to donate to the commissioners 100 acres for the town site of Shelbyville. The commissioners studied the Balch and Galbreath 100 acre donation and the Cannon 100 acres donation and the water supply that both donations required. The Balch and Galbreath donation had the Balch springs and the Cannon's donation had the Big Spring Branch. The water supply for both donations had adequate water for public use but still, the Acts of 1809 stipulated that the site for the town was to be located in the center of the county, or within two miles of the center, or as near as possible. The Balch and Galbreath 100 acres was close enough to be accepted, but the Cannon 100 acres was at the center of the county and was accepted by the commissioners. Clement Cannon deeded the 100 acres to the commissioners on May 2, 1810 and from this donation the town of Shelbyville was born. Actually, Clement Cannon was not the single founding father of Shelbyville. He, with the seven commissioners are considered to be the founding fathers.
Two hundred years later, a group of interested citizens got together and made plans to celebrate and recognize the 200th Bicentennial Birthday. The group did not select May 2, but instead selected and set aside the date, Saturday, July 17, 2010 to honor our past and to give celebration to the birth of our beautiful city of Shelbyville, Tennessee. Jerry W. Cook
Rural Values
small town residents and country folk usually keep their racism well-hidden, with whispers and private conversations, never anything out in the open. you can overhear it sometimes in restaurants or bars, and occasionally it will sneak out anonymously, as you see here.
after taking this pic and a few others for coverage, i turned to leave only to see a pickup driving down the road directly between me and my car. there was a middle-aged farm couple inside, both of them glaring at me. at first i was dead scared, thinking they were going to stop and accost me, or maybe call the police. but then i realized this was the first i'd seen this graffiti, and they probably lived near there and had seen it many times (the paint is old enough to have been faded by the sun), but done nothing. a can of silver spray paint costs maybe three dollars, and even if it wasn't their property they should have been sufficiently ashamed of their neighbors to have covered it up. i decided they were in the greater wrong, and glared right back at them.
some people will tell you small towns are all norman rockwell and john phillips sousa; never believe it for a second. -- technical stuff: i need to spend maybe 30 seconds after i see a subject to think about how i want it to look as a photo, then revise those ideas as i'm shooting. having a basic preliminary "sketch" in mind would help me avoid simple mistakes like the slanting horizon in this shot, and also help me get in the best position for the shot.
i think i get nervous, especially with a subject like this, and rush just to get it through the lens. a lot of my bad exposures could be fixed this way too, by spending just a second or two to find a midtone instead of relying on evaluative metering.
if i had this to do over (and i don't, because i don't remember where this was; it was remote), i'd pause before even getting out of the car, then i'd step maybe six feet to the left of this viewpoint to get a better angle on the bins and not have them so compressed in the frame, and meter the shadows on the left bin.
it's all well and good to think about these things after the fact, but i need to be making sure i think about them before it's too late to do anything about it.

work in progress...celtic cross
the partialy done Celtic cross. I'm trying to make the body of it out of one single piece of wire. It's been quite a challenge keeping it straight while I work. This one is actualy my second attempt from last night at this cross, the first one having been ripped apart and cut up for scrap wire. Peanut loves this one, she was in my lap the whole time I was making it and enjoyed batting at all the wire as it waved in the air while I was working.

malay wedding gift
Bunga Telur
Someone asked what is the origin of the bunga telur - the token gift that is given to guests who come to wedding ceremonies. The giving of bunga telur was actually originally a throwback to the Hindu culture which influenced the cultures in Southeast Asia. The egg represent or symbolise a fertile union between the couple as the egg is the symbol of fertility. In some sense, by giving away eggs, it was hoped that the newly wed couple will also be blessed with fertility and thus have their own children in the future.
In the beginning, the boiled eggs would be given out as gifts without any other gifts. Slowly it evolved for the practise of giving the eggs wrapped in paper and then that evolved to placing the eggs in small egg baskets or holders - and hence became known as bunga telur. The eggs were even given wrapped in handkerchiefs and the handkerchiefs became the bunga telur. Over time, the baskets or the holders for the eggs became more elaborate. I remembered in the late 1970s and early 1980s receiving the eggs in tiny porcelain swans, glasses and even in crystal holders.
As time passes, the gifts got more elaborate still. At the same time people over time do not give out the eggs anymore. This is probably due to a number of factors. I can only speculate that one of them could be that the guest numbers for Malay weddings had increased. It was quite cumbersome boiling some 1,000+ eggs for wedding ceremonies. I remembered because we did it for my brother's wedding - a number of eggs got broken and we had to boil more to compensate for the broken ones.
However, nowadays even though eggs are no longer given out but the practise of giving bunga telur remained but there is no egg or eggholder anymore just the gifts. Today's bunga telur has moved away from anything that resemble holders for eggs - they can be anything from prayer mats to yassins and from luxury soaps to expensive biscuits to silver trays. The more common ones are mugs, cups, glass or plastic bowls and candle holders. Some unusual ones I have come across are wall clocks and ringkat (the tiffin carrier). The costs of these varies from a dollar each to lots of dollars each depending on the financial capability of the hosts. But even a dollar each bunga telur with 500 guests mean that it still cost $500.
Surprisingly at Indian weddings, it is not eggs that are given out but those guests at an Indian wedding will receive sweets reflecting and reaffirming the sweetness of the occasion. However there are many similarities that still remained between the Malay and Indian ceremonies. Among these included mandi lulur or mandi belulut as we call it - where a special bath scrub was applied to the bodies of the brides and grooms.

White milk glass bowl for chocolate covered pretzels.
Silver 2-tier cupcake stand for groom's cupcakes.
Small stand is for peanut butter/chocolate fudge.
Other stands are for chocolate chip cookies, boiled chocolate cookies, wedding cake, and additional flavored cupcakes.
I also got 4 silver trays at the dollar tree for muffins and caramel apples.
The vintage stands will also go on the sweets bar. I'll upload a pic of the general idea.
