RAW #16 WIP Copper, sterling silver, stick pearl bead, lab grown ruby crystal (bought mannnny years ago). Fabricated. Doesn't seem like this should have taken me all day does it? There were soldering/flow problems, I wanted to attach each element separately to make sure that the placement was correct, there was time in the pickle, and oh yes. There were desperation moments when it seemed like the only relief was time spent with the Pregnant and In Jail ladies on cable. Lessons Learned: • If you insist on saving money by using copper as a base, then you MUST spend more money in fuel by using propane/oxy. Not sure it's worth it. : • It's really easy to get perfect placement of prongs by sinking them into the solderite board while attaching and drilling holes in the copper to stand them up straight. • I really DO like flowing the solder on a part before joining. No where near as difficult or fiddly as I've always thought. • I appreciate all my friends who reminded me that there is a device known as a ring clamp. Makes so many operations so much easier. • Don't clip and polish the prongs until the stone is in place. These are a tad short and hard to bend over fully. • Again - "jewelers cement" never hurt anyone. And besides there's only a microscopic amount on the square wire platform that supports the ruby. The cool nail tripod is holding the platform to the copper and was made by Chris Darway. RAW #16 WIP Copper, sterling silver, stick pearl bead, lab grown ruby crystal (bought mannnny years ago). British United Air Ferries Carvair # I still have the original postcard, it was sent me after I wrote to BUAF. Carvair - capacity five cars and 22 passengers or seven and a half tons of freight BUAF was a wholly private, independent British car and passenger ferry airline based in the United Kingdom during the 1960s. It specialised in cross-Channel ferry flights carrying cars and their owners between its numerous bases in Southern England, the Channel Islands and Continental Europe. All-passenger and all-cargo flights were operated as well. History BUAF came into being on 1 January 1963 as a result of the merger of Channel Air Bridge and Silver City Airways.[1] The newly formed airline was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air Holdings, which in turn was a subsidiary of British & Commonwealth (B&C). This ownership structure made BUAF a sister airline of British United Airways (BUA), at the time Britain's biggest independent airline and the country's leading independent scheduled operator. BUAF operated scheduled and non-scheduled vehicle ferry, passenger and freight services. This included scheduled routes from Southend, Lydd Ferryfield and Hurn to ten points in the Channel Islands and Continental Europe. Aviation Traders Carvairs operated what the airline called "deeper penetration" routes to Basle, Geneva and Strasbourg. Bristol Superfreighters plied the routes to Jersey, Guernsey, Cherbourg, Le Touquet, Calais, Ostend and Rotterdam. The airline's scheduled services between the UK, Le Touquet and Ostend formed part of rail-air operations linking the respective capital cities at each end. These were operated in conjunction with Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer francais (SNCF) and Societe Nationale des Chemins de fer Belges/Nationale Maatschappij der Belgische Spoorwegen (SNCB/NMBS), the respective national railway companies of France and Belgium. Coach-air services in conjunction with local coach operators were provided between the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland via Calais, Ostend, Rotterdam and Basle. In addition, all-passenger configured Bristol Freighters/Superfreighters were used for inclusive tour work on behalf of BUA (Services) Ltd. Sister airline BUA (C.I.) assumed the former Silver City routes linking the North of England with the Channel Isles and the Continent.[2] BUAF subsequently added routes linking Southampton with Rotterdam, Ostend, Calais, Deauville, Le Touquet, Jersey, Guernsey, Dinard and Cherbourg to its scheduled route network, while discontinuing its "deeper penetration" routes to Basle, Geneva and Strasbourg as these generated insufficient traffic to sustain a viable operation. Some of the new Southampton routes were part of rail-air operations in conjunction with the French and Belgian national railway companies as well.[3][4] As a consequence of B&C's reorganisation of the BUA group of companies during 1967/8, BUAF changed its name to British Air Ferries (BAF) in 1967.[5][6][7][8] Aircraft fleet details BUAF operated the following aircraft types: Aviation Traders ATL 98 Carvair Bristol 170 Freighter Mark 21E Bristol 170 Freighter Mark 31 Bristol 170 Superfreighter Mark 32. All BUAF aircraft had individual names. [edit] Fleet in 1963 In April 1963 the BUAF fleet comprised 28 aircraft. (Source for the above fleet notes: Flight International, 11 April 1963, World Airline Survey, p. 517) Fleet in 1967 In September 1967 the BUAF fleet comprised 23 aircraft. (Source for the above fleet notes: Flight International, 28 September 1967, British Airline Survey, p. 531) Accidents and incidents BUAF suffered one non-fatal incident during its existence. On 24 September 1963 a Bristol 170 Superfreighter Mark 32 (registration G-AMWA) was damaged beyond repair in a takeoff accident at Guernsey Airport.[1] Operating a scheduled passenger flight to Bournemouth, the Bristol 170 was preparing for takeoff from Guernsey Airport's runway 28. The first officer, who was flying the aircraft from the left-hand seat, opened the throttles slowly to full power to combat the effects of a 17 knots crosswind. The port engine rpm began to fluctuate when the aircraft reached a speed of about 50 knots during the takeoff run. When the aircraft's speed approached 80 knots, the first officer decided to abort his takeoff. The FO realised that the aircraft was going to overshoot the end of the runway and steered it to the left to avoid hitting obstacles in the vicinity of the runway end. This resulted in the aircraft beco Khamsum Yaling namgyel Stupa in Punakha Dzong ROYAL HERITAGE TOUR 10 NIGHTS/11 DAYS The traditional architectural buildings are national heritage sites for the country, and are significant to the country’s history. The Royal Heritage Tours offers the visitors a unique look at some of Bhutan’s Royal Family palaces. The driving tour takes places in major heritage sites across the country from the scenic mountains of the Paro Valley to the distant village of Lhuntse. Apart from royal palaces there are other heritage sites such as the giant fortresses and other significant architectural monuments in relation to the history of the monarchy. Hundreds of Buddhist temples, monasteries and chortens are found scattered atop rocky cliffs, on uneven enclosures and on every possible regions indicating that in Bhutan, Buddhism is flourishing in its ever youthful state. Day1 Arrival Paro Depart Bangkok international airport by our druk-Air (Royal Bhutan Airline). On arrival at Paro international airport, you will be received by our representative and escorted you to Hotel/Resort. After an early lunch, drive to Drugyel Dzong which is built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1646 to commemorate his victory over the Tibetan invaders. Though largely destroyed by fire in 1951, the towering outer walls and central keep remain an imposing sight. On clear day you can see the splendid view of Mt. Chomolhari from the approach road to Drukgyel Dzong. After lunch, visit Ta Dzong (built in1656 and renovated in 1968), an ancient watchtower, which now houses the National Museum. Below the museum is the Paro Rimpung Dzong (literally meaning “Heap of Jewels”, built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the centre of civil and religious authority in this valley. A short walk takes you to the base of the dzong and across a traditional cantilevered, covered bridge. A short distance further is one of the innumerable archery grounds. (Archery is the national sport of Bhutan). If we are lucky, we may catch a match in action. The evening ends with a walk through Paro’s main shopping district. Day 2 Hike to Taksang (Tiger Nest) then in the evening drive to Thimphu Right after the breakfast drive towards the road point to Taktshang. Taktshang Monastery, the most famous of Bhutan’s monasteries is perched on the side of a cliff 900m above the Paro valley floor. Taktshang means “Tiger’s Nest,” so named because Guru Rimpoche reportedly flew to the site of the monastery on the back of a flying tiger in the late centuries of the first millennium. The monastery is perched on a cliff nearly 3,000 ft above the Paro valley floor. This day hike is not only historically and culturally interesting, but also incredibly scenic! It takes about two hours to reach the cafeteria, which gives a breathtaking view of the Tiger’s Nest. If you still feel like hiking then you can take another hour to reach the temple. Then return back and drive to Thimphu (about 2 hours drive). Check in Hotel. Day 3 Thimphu to Wangdue view Punakha After breakfast, go to Bhutan National Bank for currency exchange and then you can get an opportunity to purchase exquisite collector Bhutanese stamps. Then drive to Punakha. (The ancient capital of Bhutan) is 3 hours drive from Thimphu across Dochu-La Pass. (Alt. 11,400 ft) snow-capped eastern Himalayan ranges can be seen on a clear day. Prayer flags will flutter you over the pass deeper into the essence of Bhutan. Once you cross the pass, you wind down into a warm fertile valley and meander along a gently flowing aquamarine river that leads you to the Punakha valley. After lunch visit the Punakha dzong, the winter residence of the Je khempo (chief abbot). Punakha dzong is the second dzong system built in Bhutan by Shebdrung Nawang Namgyel in the year 1637. The Dzong is said to be the most beautiful of dzong in Bhutan; it is an outstanding structure with intense artwork. Then visit the Wangduephodrang Dzong, sit majestically on a steep ridge overlooking the highway that forks to the east and south of Bhutan. Overnight at hotel in Wangdue. Day 4 Wangdue- Trongsa vie Gangtey valley Today drive early to Phobjikha valley, A broad glacial valley (10’000 ft) on the flanks of the Black Mountains, Phobjikha with it’s gently slop is a place of astonishing beauty described as” the most beautiful valley in the most beautiful country of Himalayas”. Every winter, the rare and beautiful black-necked cranes return from Tibet to the Gangtey valley where they are protected. Gangtey also has a very interesting Nyingmapa monastery, the only one of the only one of its kind west of the Black Mountain range. The monastery is renovated by 9th Gangtey Tulku Rimpoche. On the way to Trongsa, stop Chendebji Chorten, patterned on Katmandu’s Swayambhunath stupa, with eyes painted at the four cardinal points. It was built in the 18 century by Lama Shida, to cover the remains of an evil spirit that was subdued at this spot. ????? Western-style Deep-fried Silver-thread Buns with Ham and Sweetened Condensed Milk - ???? WeiYiShiFu ????? Western-style Deep-fried Silver-thread Buns with Ham and Sweetened Condensed Milk - WeiYiShiFu CNY18 --- On our last night in Kunming, we set out to find an upmarket dining experience, and as it happens, we walked past a newly opened fancy looking restaurant and decided to give it a chance. The results on that fateful night, while not totally SS Minnow-esque, was not exactly the culmination of 5000 years of civilization either. The dishes we tried were modern renditions of traditional dishes with a pretentious twist, mostly for visual appeal rather than taste. The pickled vegetables were the best dish of the night! For some unknown reason, many dishes were overpowered by a sweet element, be it a dipping "sauce" of tinned sweetened condensed milk for the ????? Western-style Deep-fried Silver-thread Buns with Ham, or a watery syrup "glaze" over the ???? Dragon Eyes Burnt White, a savoury steamed glutinous rice studded with lotus seeds and sprinkled with luridly coloured candied peel. Other dishes just seemed a bit bland and a waste of exciting ingredients. The ???? Four Wild Flowers was 4 types of flowers, each cooked in a different style, but with the inevitable addition of dried, fresh, or ground chillies, completely overpowering the subtle floral fragrances. Apart from the ??? jasmine and ??? pomegranate flowers, I had no idea what the There was ?? "gold flower" and ?? "white flower" were. Having just a pile of stir-fried flowers wasn't texturally interesting either, although the pomegranate flowers were definitely exotic for it's boxy prehistoric appearance. We also had a ???? Soup of Mountain Delicacies, supposedly a starter, but arrived just before the dishes were cleared! The verdict, salty. Well, perhaps that is a bit harsh. At least it was rich and tasty, even if the flavours didn't stand out. Overall, this was a disappointing and expensive experience. In the beginning there was no earth to live on, but up above, in the Great Blue, there was a woman who dreamed dreams. One night she dreamed about a tree covered with white blossoms, a tree that brightened up the sky when its flowers opened but that brought terrible darkness when they closed again. The dream frightened her, so she went and told it to the wise old men who lived with her, in their village in the sky. "Pull up this tree," she begged them, but they did not understand. All they did was to dig around its roots, to make space for more light. But the tree just fell through the hole they had made and disappeared. After that there was no light at all, only darkness. The old men grew frightened by the woman and her dreams. It was her fault that the light had gone away forever. So they dragged her toward the hole and pushed her through as well. Down, down she fell, down toward the great emptiness. There was nothing below her but a heaving waste of water and she would surely have been smashed to pieces, this strange dreaming woman from the Great Blue, had not a fish hawk come to her aid. His feathers made a pillow for her and she drifted gently above the waves. But the fish hawk could not keep her up all on his own. He needed help. So he called out to the creatures of the deep. "We must find some firm ground for this poor woman to rest on," he said anxiously. But there was no ground, only the swirling, endless waters. A helldiver went down, down, down to the very bottom of the sea and brought back a little bit of mud in his beak. He found a turtle, smeared the mud onto its back, and dived down again for more. Then the ducks joined in. They loved getting muddy and they too brought beaks full of the ocean floor and spread it over the turtle's shell. The beavers helped, they were great builders and they worked away, making the shell bigger and bigger. Everybody was very busy now and everybody was excited. This world they were making seemed to be growing enormous! WESTERN SILVER BELT BUCKLES. SILVER EVIL EYE Western Silver Belt Buckles
Northern Chinese Bronze Belt Buckle with Gold and Silver Inlay Bronze, gold, and silver, 3rd-2nd century B.C.E. L. 14.5 cm. The major northern pastoral peoples contemporary with the Han empire were the Xiongnu, who by the end of the third century B.C. had formed a vast empire in the steppes beyond the Great Wall.1 These plaques represent one of the major types of belt ornament produced during the height of Xiongnu power. The two mirror-image plaques, number 110, together form one belt buckle. The other plaque, number 111, is the left-hand plaque of a mirror-image pair, of which the mate is missing. The perforation in the left-hand plaque of a buckle is part of the fastening system in which a cord was threaded through it and tied. The plaque pair and the single plaque show the same mythological zoomorphic scene with minor variations. Each plaque depicts a fallen ungulate with raptor-head appendages and cloven hooves being attacked by a bear and a wolf. The ungulate is a mythological creature with the tips of its antlers and ends of its tail transformed into a series of raptor heads, here shown running along part of the border of the plaque. This mythological scene with its animal combat motif belongs to a larger symbolic system that evolved among pastoral peoples of the eastern Eurasian steppes. It appears to have been introduced into the iconography of those inhabiting the grasslands of northwest China during the late fourth century B.C. by pastoral groups from farther west who were fleeing the turbulence created by the Central Asian campaigns of Alexander the Great; it continued to be represented on belt ornaments in north China throughout the first century B.C.2 These plaques differ in detail and workmanship, suggesting that they were cast in different metalworking shops. The pair, 110, were both lost-wax cast, then very fine inlay channels were chisel cut into the surface and inlaid with gold and silver, a labor-intensive process. By contrast, the single plaque, 111, was cast by the "lost-wax and lost-textile" method, an East Asian variation of the lost-wax technique in which the wax model was supported by a piece of textile during the casting process, enabling the craftsman to produce a thinner final product while reducing both the expenditure of metal and money.3 The attachment loops on the reverse sides were cast integrally with the plaques. After casting, the single plaque was mercury amalgam gilded. Some of the many belt plaques associated with the Xiongnu may have been made at workshops in China, whereas others could have been produced by Han Chinese craftsmen in their employ at their northern strongholds in Mongolia and the vicinity of Lake Baikal. The participation of Chinese craftsmen in providing luxury items for their pastoral neighbors explains how certain exotic artistic motifs and metalworking techniques were introduced into China during the Han period.4 In contrast to plaque 111, the pair of plaques, 110, represent the best of Western Han inlay technology. A closer look at the mythological scene reveals a major detail that relates to Chu rather than steppe iconography. Each raptor head holds a pearl in its beak, an iconographic characteristic associated with birds on Chu artifacts. A pair of plaques made of gilded bronze that carry the same mythological scene was excavated from a Han-period antiquarians's tomb near Sandiancun in the eastern suburbs of Xi'an, Shaanxi province, where the Western Han capital of Chang'an was located.5 More recently, two superb gold buckles each consisting of mirror-image plaques were discovered at Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, among the grave offerings in the tomb of the Western Han prince Liu Wu, who died in 154 B.C.6 The buckles were still attached to silk belts and carefully laid in a wooden box. Interestingly, one pair of plaques was cast by the lost-wax and lost-textile method, while the other pair is heavier and was lost-wax cast. ECB 1. Turquoise Concho Belt No maker's mark, no sterling stamp. These are heavy metal conchos on bridle leather. The belt buckle has a "ketoh" (bow guard) design based on traditional Navajo designs and a piece of low-grade (dyed) turquoise set in the center. The conchos have a great patina for non-sterling metal. Vintage belt from my personal collection.
