Historic Fort Bayard Officers Quarters

Historic Fort Bayard Officers Quarters

Fort Bayard, located in the homeland of the Apaches, was established in August 1866, by Company B of the 125th U.S. Colored Infantry under the command of Lieutenant James Kerr. He established an encampment near the mining communities of Pinos Altos and Santa Rita.

Soldiers from the Fort battled many of the most famous apache war leaders including Victorio, Nana, and Geronimo. In the late 1870s all five of the cavalry units stationed at Fort Bayard fought Victorio and his followers. The troops used both Apache and Navajo scouts in their efforts. After the death of Victorio in October of 1880, his successor, Nana, took up the fight and led an especially devastating raid in July and August of 1881. Nana's band fought troops of the 9th Cavalry eight times. In one of these encounters, in Gavalan Canyon which joins the Mimbres River, Lieutenant George W. Smith and four enlisted men from Fort Bayard were killed.

The McComas Incident occurred on March 27, 1883. This event made national news for weeks and had a lasting impact on the lives of the Apaches. The press all over the country demanded immediate and decisive action be used to stop these atrocities. Judge McComas, a prominent citizen in Silver City, along with his wife, and son, Charlie, were traveling by buckboard from Silver City to Lordsburg. A band of Apache attacked them at the mouth of Thompson Canyon in the Burro Mountains. They killed the Judge and his wife and carried Charlie off. Soldiers and local citizens failed to find any trace of Charlie. To this day, stories abound about what happened to this blond-haired little boy.

Finally, with the surrender of Geronimo on September 1886, the conflict came to an end. The Indians no longer presented a threat to the area. Fort Bayard continued as an active Army post until 1899. About this time it was proposed that the Fort be abandoned. However, Surgeon General Sternberg of the U.S. Army had noted the general well-being of the line troops on duty at the fort. He suspected the area's mild climate and gentle seasons were making a difference in maintaining healthy troops. He began posting troops sick with tuberculosis who were returning from the tropics.

He conceived the idea of transferring the post to the Medical Department as an Army General Hospital for the treatment and research of tuberculosis. Army doctors began producing excellent results with their patients. During World War One there were as many as 1,700 patients at the hospital. From 1899 to 1920, some of the foremost medical army officers in the country carried out important work here.

On May 1, 1922, Fort Bayard came under the jurisdiction of the Veterans Administration and then in 1966, it was turned over to the State of New Mexico as a public nursing home.

Today the post cemetery, which began in 1866, is all that remains as a reminder of past glories. It was designated on July 5, 1976, as a National Cemetery. It continues to be used, and holds the remains of hundreds of armed forces personnel and their dependents, destitute civilians of the frontier days, and a few unknowns.

Because of its continuous use, Fort Bayard did not suffer the fate of its surrounding sister forts. Visitors can still visit the area and see the silent parade ground with its surrounding officers quarters proudly facing Clinton Greaves' statue armed and ready to go. Close by is the still-flourishing hospital which continues to serve the needs of people living in the area.

Week 02 - BROKEN

Week 02 - BROKEN

Plastic, bent spine was originally a novelty keychain. The L1 and L2 are for Lumbar 1 and 2. / Blackened, aged quarter found on my living room floor. 1966. Was already blackened and tarnished. [Are these silver?] I set it in the pelvic area to sort of denote a place for a baby. Or a vacancy in that area. The red “X” is kind of just for a bit of color. And “broke” can be connotative of a state of financial poverty as well as the obvious definition of disrepair or damaged. / Old postage stamps from Chris Dyer. Torn from a package sent to him from a purchase of old postcards on eBay. / Rusted bolt from my parking space. / Porcelain dentistry tooth from some unknown old dental display. An incisor. [?] / Rusted nail from my parking space.

An old friend is in town from Colorado to visit Chris and me. She has some new mechanical implant in her lower back. It comes with some remote control she can use to turn it on and off. This is all stemming from her broken back. The spine was used for this reason. I marked on the plastic spine the same 2 vertebrae that she broke.

I will have to end these bones and skeletons immediately or I’ll be stuck in that rut. I painted the glass black on this one. The whole week just felt that way.

Concentration deficit

Concentration deficit

My sister tells me always that I have a concentration deficit. That means that I easily get distracted, which is true. I have problems to pretend interest when I am bored and I easily get annoyed. But I called it never concentration deficit, I called it curiosity, because my concentration is like a butterfly. I can find interest in everything, at least for 10 seconds.
So if somebody talks to me and there is a waiter passing, holding on a silver tray something that looks “oh, what is this???” – I am “sorry, what did you say?”.
I know this habit can be rude and I try to work on it. But on the other hand I learn a lot in this way.
I found this cigarette paper and I realized that I know nothing about Slovenija. I wasn’t even sure about its geographical position. Did you know that the international calling code is +386? I read some things about Slovenia and I learnt that their most famous musicians, writers, poets and scientist have names I have never heard before. How is life in this country? What is the typical food? How come that I know more about countries that are on the other side of the globe than about this country which has a direct border with Italy and is part of the European Union (but they don’t use the Euro – why?)? I have no plan about Slovenia, that’s it. Don’t blame it on Slovenia, blame it on me.
Another thing: the waiter passed with an ice cappuccino and it looked so delicious that I had to try it at once. It was gooood! And the guy next to me was “oh, what is this???”.

This is a beautiful "Pearl Purse Pendant Necklace" made with Pearl thread and egg shell Czech Seed beads.

I started by threading the beads onto the pearl thread and then knitted them into this pearl purse with very tiny knitting needles.

I added some filgree spacers and beads, mother of pearl beads and gold over silver roundels. Added a 34 inch daisy chain chain.

It has a handmade 14 kgf hook clasp. The "pearl purse pendant necklace" measures 2 1/2" by 2 1/2"

175-182/365 All the days I missed.

175-182/365 All the days I missed.

Did you guys miss me? Actually, I doubt any of you even noticed.

Fri., June 24, 2011
I went to Raging Waters with B&G Club coworkers and saw Kyle G. there (what a coincidence) and his gang of Asian childhood private school friends while waiting in the lunch line. What another coincidence that we kept running into them at every other ride we went to. I took pills and cough medicine for my minor case of bronchitis later that day. I did a lot and I came home really late. That picture was late minute.

Sat., June 25, 2011
After my job, I went back home and told my external hard drive how much I loved it. There was a "party" and my cousins came over and played hide and seek.

Sun., June 26, 2011
Oh yes. I went to Alice's Summertime concert in San Francisco with Lisa Pham. I saw OneRepublic, Matt Nathanson, and many other artists. It was fun sitting there, eating ice cream, and headbobbing to some good music. (No, children. Headbanging is for rock concerts only. I have yet to go to one of those.) It was my first concert and it was awesome.

Mon., June 27, 2011
I went to a country club and sold raffle tickets to help fundraise for the Boys and Girls' Club. If you think Alina Baker is attempting to do the Thriller, she's not. She's doing a cartwheel. Derp. (Later she started planking on the grass after eating rich people food. Herp.)

Tues., June 28, 2011
I continued making blankets for my Silver Award at Vy Pham's house. Alex Huynh and Lisa Pham came over. I dominated all of them at individual fuzzball.

Wed., June 29, 2011
Alina and my anniversary of our (fake) lesbian marriage was the day after so that night I made napkin roses. I usually lose respect for myself when I find myself editting photos like a hipster, but I decided a space overlay would spruce things up.

Thurs., June 30, 2011
Fun day with the Science and Engineering Club program. We were using a program called Scratch and a college dude I meant named Travis was like, "I have no idea how to use this! It's like an object-based program based off of Pearl! ...If you know what I'm talking about." Later I commented on his brown suede shoes. "I watched a musical with a number called 'Blue Suede Shoes!' ...Except those aren't blue. They're brown." (Tell me if you're familiar with the musical All Shook Up.

Fri., July 1, 2011
Because most of the kids were gone on their field trip to Raging Waters, I basically had no job and just chilled with friends. We stayed hermits in the computer room messing around on Sims 3 doing ridiculous things with our characters. (There was a Sims of Linsey Lohan that kept stealing my Sims' waffles. I mean, she just walked in while I was sleeping and took them out of my fridge in my room.)

I collect a lot of vintage and antique dishes, and I have several Homer Laughlin Eggshell saucers and salad plates. I especially the simple white background, the raised design of the grapevine and fruit around the edges and the pretty flowers in the center. I've yet to see this design elsewhere and I don't know what it's called, but I like it.

The spoon is vintage sterling silver, with a knight's helm on it. The back has a monogram of "AVE" and is marked sterling with a tiny hallmark which looks like a stag with a "W". I need to do a little research about its origins and age.

Now that Hans is cutting stones, I have to learn to set them!!! Here is a setting that I built to hold this spectacular Cubic Zirconia. The color is so intense and it reminds me of my heart pulsating with blood and energy.

This "morganite" cubic zirconia Hans cut from a pattern designed by Jeff Graham called "White Asterism". It weighs 12 carats. The pattern boasts 72.6 in light return with a mere 73 facets in 6-fold mirror-image symmetry. (I looked that up on the pattern page.)

Etsy SteamTeam Contest Entry

Etsy SteamTeam Contest Entry

This started with what is possibly a clock housing. Challenged by the current Etsy SteamTeam's contest to make a steampunk piece with moving parts, I immediately got the idea of making a steampunk version of the child's toy that has a cardboard bottom with holes and several free-rolling balls which can be put in the holes by manipulating the toy. So I used some existing holes and added a wonderful cog and several other steamy watch parts to give a more challenging terrain for moving the balls over and into. There is a protective pocket watch lens cover that has the haze of age upon it and the 3 tiny balls are Sterling silver so that they show up clearly against all the lovely old brass. The "toy" is prong-set on a vintage brass filigree and the whole assemblage dangles from a 22" vintage gold-filled chain. Some vintage chain dangles off the toy for further steamy vibes. I am a trained, if somewhat playful, silversmith and have assembled this piece to last.

London: British Museum - Sutton Hoo Helmet - 6th-7th Century

London: British Museum - Sutton Hoo Helmet - 6th-7th Century

This extraordinary helmet is very rare. Only four helmets dating to the early medieval period have been found so far in England: at Sutton Hoo, Benty Grange, Wollaston and York.

The helmet has panels decorated with interlacing Style II animal ornament and heroic scenes, motifs that were common in the Germanic world at this time. One scene shows two warriors, wearing horned helmets, holding short swords and down-turned spears. The other shows a mounted warrior trampling a fallen enemy, who in turn is stabbing the horse, a theme handed down from the Roman Empire.

The face-mask is the most remarkable feature of the helmet: it has eye-sockets, eyebrows and a nose, which has two small holes cut in it to allow the wearer to breathe freely. The bronze eyebrows are inlaid with silver wire and garnets. Each ends in a gilt-bronze boars-head - perhaps a symbol of strength and courage.

Placed against the top of the nose, between the eyebrows, is a gilded dragon-head that lies nose to nose with a similar dragon-head placed at the end of the low crest that runs over the cap. The nose, eyebrows and dragon make up a great bird with outstretched wings that flies on the helmet.

The helmet was badly damaged when the burial chamber collapsed. By precisely locating the remaining fragments as if in a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, the helmet has been rebuilt. A complete reconstruction has also been made.

Who was buried at Sutton Hoo?
No trace of a body was found during the 1939 excavation of the Sutton Hoo ship-burial. Analyses of soil samples for residual phosphate (a chemical left behind when a human or animal body has completely decayed away), taken in 1967 during the British Museum's excavations, support the idea that a body was originally placed in the burial chamber, but that this had totally decayed in the highly acidic conditions at the bottom of the ship. The burial also contained a leather purse with a jewelled lid. It held a group of thirty-seven Merovingian gold tremisses from Francia, three coin-sized blanks and two billets (ingots). All the identifiable coins were struck at different mints after around AD 595 and probably before around AD 640. They are important because they give the burial a terminus post quem, i.e. the time at which the earliest coins were minted is the earliest possible time at which they could have been included in the burial.

This in turn gives us some clues as to who may have been buried in this sumptuous grave. For example, there are four kings who may have been buried here: Raedwald who was overlord of the English kingdoms between AD616 and his death (at the latest in 627, probably in 625/6), Eorpwald (died 627/8) and co-regents Sigebert and Ecric, who both died fighting Penda of Mercia in AD 637. Of these, opinion is divided between Raedwald, a convert to Christianity who abandoned his faith, and Sigebert, a devout Christian. But we do not know what a king's burial would have looked like, so we cannot exclude the possibility that Mound 1 was, for example, for a member of the royal kin or a powerful member of a high-ranking family.

All the objects in this burial were carefully chosen so that in the afterlife the dead man would have everything with him that had been familiar to him in life. Many of these possessions, even to the modern eye, are extraordinary and they allow us a glimpse into a life that relied on simple technology but was still sumptuous and sophisticated - a lifestyle that is described in the poem Beowulf, which, although written down a couple of centuries after the burial, vividly brings to life this earlier heroic period.
