Susanna Covers the Catwalk

Meet Susanna—complete with killer heels, gorgeous models, and cutting-edge fashion, she's been given her first ever Scene magazine assignment: covering the catwalk!

Susanna Barringer sees her internship at Scene magazine as a dream come true. She'll scoop the latest celebrity stories and be the youngest journalist to rub elbows with the stars. However, things don't come as easily as she hopes, and only now after months of hard work for her demanding Devil Wears Prada boss, Nell Wickham, does it seem her efforts are about to pay off. In her next assignment for the magazine, she'll be covering New York Fashion Week! She's learned that gray is the new black, shorts are the new slacks, and that there is actually a difference between a catwalk and a runway—all she needs now is a story, which should be no problem for the girl who can get a story no matter what. After all, it can't be that hard to get backstage—can it?

3 Issues of THREADS MAGAZINE; Aug/Sept. 1987 Featuring Sewing-Machine Surgery, Feb/Mar. 1988 Featuring Ikat Knitting, and Feb./Mar. 1990 Featuring Techniques and Tips from Christian Dior.

The focus of Threads magazine is absolutely for advanced sewing techniques. We do have a department in the magazine covering fundamentals, but by and large it is aimed at intermediate to advanced skills. Threads Magazine is a publication that is the only one on the market for intermediate and advanced sewing enthusiasts. A quality magazine run by a knowledgeable staff, each issue has helpful tips that are explained in detail with examples, good graphical representation, and procedures. Issues explain various sewing concepts in an easy-to-understand way. Most sewing magazines focus solely on the fads, spending so much time on one subject that those relatively new to sewing don't get the real tips and tricks that any sewer needs to create a quality garment or other project; not so with Threads Magazine.

Mom got me some of these, and I fussed around in my stash for the rest. there are a few I could replace, but I'm going for the scrappy look, as well as the not-quite-perfect look. They are all florals, except 3 have extras.

At the quilt show, many of the quilts were gorgeous, but *too* co-ordinated.

I showed the pile to Ron and told him I was making a queen-sized quilt for our bed. "I love you too," he replied.

It'll be the biggest one I've ever done.

You know, if I finish it.

Anything Goes: A Biography of the Roaring Twenties

The glitter of 1920s America was seductive, from jazz, flappers, and wild all night parties to the birth of Hollywood and a glamorous gangster-led crime scene flourishing under Prohibition. But the period was also punctuated by momentous events‹the political show trials of Sacco and Vanzetti, the huge Ku Klux Klan march down Washington, D.C.?s Pennsylvania Avenue‹and it produced a dizzying array of writers, musicians, and film stars, from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Bessie Smith and Charlie Chaplin.

In Anything Goes, Lucy Moore interweaves the stories of the compelling people and events that characterized the decade to produce a gripping portrait of the Jazz Age. She reveals that the Roaring Twenties were more than just ?the years between wars.? It was an epoch of passion and change‹an age, she observes, not unlike our own.

Fair Juliet Evening Dress (Inspired by the Roaring 1920s)

Fair Juliet Evening Dress (Inspired by the Roaring 1920s)

The imagined one-piece midnight-black evening shift idealy would be fashioned out of French voile (silk), heavily embroidered, beaded and sequenced. The versatility of the number at first glance might be undetectable, but there is the chance for the wearer to alter the hemline herself by hiking the dress up over the hips to knee-length to mid-thigh. This capacity to float the hemline, is one inspired from the original early 20thc design of the dress. some sought to be daring and move the hemline from ankle to knee if the environment allowed.
In terms of style, the dress marries both the popular movements of English Arts and Craft (note the Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired central motif) and Parisian Art Deco. It is a decidedly streamlined dress, with crisp straight-edges that run their course to the dropped-down waistline. Keeping in tradition, and in anticipation of the atmospheric conditions of some of the hottest late night clubs and cabarets, the dress is sleeveless, and would be laced with microfibres that might allow the wearer breathability.

the roaring 1920's

the roaring 1920's

The phrase "the bee's knees" is a slang term which means something is really wonderful, the height of excellence. It became popular in the U.S. in the 1920s, otherwise known as the Roaring Twenties. When I saw this costume at the store something about the stripes reminded me of old style swim suits, silent movies and Gatsby. I did a bit of styling to the costume, hair and make-up to make it what, in my mind, fit that very interesting era in terms of values, ideas, art, entertainment and fashion.

The Roaring Twenties

ROARING TWENTIES - DVD Movie

Three doughboys--played by James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Jeffrey Lynn--meet in a foxhole in Europe just as World War I is ending. When they return to the States, they are forgotten men, and after Eddie (Cagney) tries in vain to get his old job back, his pal Danny (Frank McHugh) lets him drive his cab at night. A fare asks unwitting Eddie to deliver bootleg liquor, but Prohibition is in full swing and Eddie is arrested and thrown in the slammer. Gallant Eddie won't rat out the woman to whom he delivered the hooch, speakeasy owner Panama Smith, (whiskey-voiced Gladys George). She bails him out and carries a torch for him for the rest of the movie, but he only has eyes for sweet little Jean (Priscilla Lane). Panama introduces Eddie to a life of crime, staking him in the bootleg business. Eddie's grit and bluster suit him perfectly for this existence, and he's soon a success, so he hires Army buddy Lloyd (Lynn) as consigliere, then teams up with George (Bogart), a liquor smuggler who plays a much dirtier game. Racketeering and murder are his methods, and he drags Eddie down with him. When Prohibition ends and the stock market crashes, Eddie loses everything and takes to the bottle himself.
The film is a bit schematic. The three stars are archetypes: Cagney the good boy gone bad, Bogart the bad boy who stays bad, and Lynn the good boy who stays good. Still, it packs quite an emotional wallop--Cagney shows extraordinary range, going from green boy to swaggering gangster to broken man, and Bogart has rarely seemed more purely evil than he does here. He kills for the sheer pleasure of it; it's truly frightening to see. The final scene is a stunning shootout between Cagney and Bogart. With lesser actors this film could be pure hokum. With Cagney and Bogart, it attains catharsis. --Laura Mirsky

Narcotics: Pit of Despair DVD (1967) Drug Abuse Rehabilitation Video

Following a boy from his introduction to drug usage to his state of drug dependency, Narcotics: Pit of Despair frighteningly depicts his addiction and encourages abstinence from all drugs. According to the film, marijuana is a gateway drug that leads to harder drugs: chiefly heroin. Drug dependency destroys lives. Abuse leads to medical problems and run-ins with the police. The main character, Hank, learns this first hand, and is sentenced to rehab. After his release, Hank visits an old friend who uses drugs, only to learn that there is no end to his addiction. This film is a fascinating examination of the way drug use was viewed in the 1960s.

My Dad grew up Catholic, and I have a charming picture of him in his alter boy outfit looking angelic from the neck down, and devilish in the eyes. My Mom was a little more vague- "fire, brimstone, and holy roller" was her way of saying that in her rural Indiana upbringing they worshipped with what ever traveling preacher was in town at the time. Since she was not particularly affiliated with any sect, she was a pushover for my feisty paternal grandmother who was insistent that the children be raised under the Catholic holy trinity.

I loved, loved, loved church- the Latin mass, the rituals, the nuns, the beautiful church we attended (a miniature blond wood cathedral of sorts), lighting candles in the lady chapel, and most of all Monsignor Anderson, who was a family friend. But I was a skeptical child, and a bit willful, and slowly but surely doubts began to creep into my little brain. If the scapular I was never supposed to take off was really going to guarantee the Virgin Mother would come to purgatory to fetch me to heaven if I died wearing it, shouldn't it be made of something more permanent than the red felt and cardboard that ran dye all over my eight year old neck when I took a bath? And howcome my grandfather and the monsignor needed to have a shot of Irish Whiskey in the back room before 11 o'clock mass if this ceremony was so holy?

Further circumstances began to separate me from my beloved church. In high school, I had just two years of Latin under my belt before services were changed to the vernacular. Huh??? And then, as I was going away to college in 1971- the height of the women's liberation movement- I began to feel indignant on behalf of those nuns I'd cherished all my life. Why exactly was it that they could not say mass? And as a child of the hippie era (the original one, not the neo-hippie fashion statement that has nothing to do with living close to the earth) who was concerned about overpopulation (we won't mention personal sexual freedom) I was very concerned about the church's rigid stance about birth control and abortion. I was in a terrible personal crisis.

Thinking that perhaps I'd strayed too far from the teachings, I volunteered to teach catechism classes in the church where I'd been confirmed. Every week for three months I took a bus an hour each way to my hometown to teach 7 year olds out of the Baltimore Catechism. Big BIG mistake for me. As a freshman in college, I was way too unwilling to suppress logic to faith, so teaching from that book just widened the chasm that was growing between me and my religion. Finally, in a desperate last-ditch effort to retain the anchor of a faith I'd practiced for more than 20 years, I signed up for a comparative religion class. Surely studying Catholicism in conjunction with other religions would put everything in perspective for me.

And it did. But not in the way I'd hoped. The more I studied the differing forms of faith, the more I discovered that they were- in the most basic terms- quite similar. They taught you to be good people and good neighbors. To help others. To not harm people or property. To learn lessons from wise teachers. To think about the larger world around you. To put that world into the context of history.

To make a very long story shorter, basically what I figured out was that what most people look for in religion are these four things.

They want an answer to the question of how we came to be.
They want guidance for an acceptable code of conduct.
They want a community that accepts them, no matter who they are or what they've done.
They want comforting rituals.

With my own peculiar logic, studying how much religions are basically the same made me quite comfortable- for the next almost 30 years- practicing my little religion of one.

I am perfectly content to not understand how we came to be. I don't understand physics either, but that doesn't make me skeptical that physics exists.

I learned all those "moral" ways to act in church when I was young. I don't have to be Catholic, or any other religion, to know that we need to strive to be good, helpful, giving people for the world to progress in a positive way.

I belong to many communities where I thrive... I don't NEED one to validate my beliefs.

Over the years, I've developed many personal rituals... around gardening, holidays, seasons, people... I am not lacking in ritual.

I was content. Except for one little thing. When my mother was quite ill before she died, and when my father went though a personal crisis, and when crises befell close friends... I was missing the kind of ritual that is a physical manifestation of FAITH. Like lighting candles in the lady chapel at church. Or the way some will pin the photograph of a suffering loved one near a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. So there really was something missing. I didn't need the deity or the services. But I did need that specific sort of ritual.

African Beads:
;The earliest Africans made beads as “fetishes”, charms, talisman and amulets for protection and adornments. The first materials were shell, stone, wood, bone, seeds, amber, ivory, teeth, clay, metals, etc. Beads were highly valuable and were also used as currency.
Trading could be done for food, livestock, etc. Beads evolve into a visual language that express rank, spirituality initiation, used to communicate culture value important to the people way of life. African people have had a special relationship with beads for thousands of years.
No other people on the planet used as many beads or in such abundance as African and the importance of the beads was not it shape, color, size or place of manufacture but the value that had been assign to it by privies generations
.Long before the first European return to Africa in the 1400’s century we were adorning ourselves with beads. Many of the beads are becoming increasingly rare and difficult to fine and some are no longer available, as worldwide demand for the beads increases.

" African Trade Beads":
this term typically applies to beads made predominately in European countries from the late 1400s through to the early 1900s, beads traded in Africa, Americas and other counties.
This "trade" period was from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s; millions of these beads were produced and traded in Africa. The Europeans dominated the African bead market.

The Beads were re- introduced to the American market in the late 1960s, by young peace core volunteer returning from Africa.
The beads became associated with the Hippie movement as symbols of love and peace. Today these beads are popular in contemporary jewelry and as collectable items .Millions are in private collections, bead and museums. All beads from the collection of MBAD/ABA African Bead Museum.

Each entry examines the life and death of a supposed fashion trend while poking fun at the social climate of the times. Tura Vintage Aviator Sunglasses

Tura Vintage Aviator Sunglasses

Please do not use this image without my prior consent.

This Tura sunglasses was found in a vintage shop "Fabulous Fanny's" around lower east side. I do not know about the brand nor care. The acetate frame was made to look wood alike. When I found it, it has clear dummy lens on. I saw this eyewear with huge potential to be a cool sunglasses so I bought it and went to Chinatown to get lens made. That is how I met Abe the first time, a young optician who made over 12 pairs of eyewear lenses for me in past few years. Abe was always able to deliver my request and that is impressive cuz sometimes my request can be very crazy and spot on demanding.

Tura frame must go with forest green tint with gradient was my vision. Abe did the tint 3 times in order to get the green color correct for me to approve with no fuss or big attitude. The frame be came a funky looking sunglasses exactly as I imagined. It is very look hip hop look when I have it on. Nothing can top a pair of custom sunglasses right!

If are crazy about eyewear and happen to be around NYC, then you must pay "Fabulous Fanny's" vintage eyewear shop a visit. I have own over 6 pairs of eyewear from them and customize lenses with Abe. Fabulous Fanny's price is very reasonable on not so expansive side. Nothing can be more unique than a customized vintage eyewear. It will be hard to find someone has the same sunglasses as you do.

From top to bottom, it consists of:

Lotus flower clip

Leaf and iris barrette purchased from The Gypsy's Kiss

Enameled butterfly hairpin and silver chime hairstick

Elf ears purchased at the Faire by my MIL, who also purchased a pair for herself!

Jingly earrings on niobium earwires to placate my finicky lobes

Vintage Taxco necklace adorned with Chinese glass beads

White cotton choli top

Green/teal tie-dye crochet top which I built the entire costume around and then had to cover because it was less than 75 degrees out

Vintage amethyst and brass necklace given to me by a friend of MIL in a huge batch of old necklace to "recycle." I converted it into a belly chain by using safety pins to attach it to the choli

Dichroic glass artisan-made cuff bracelet, silver-tone bell bracelet, glass bangle purchased from Ren Faire glass blower, awesome bracelet with coin dangles purchased from a random shop in NYC

Embroidered and painted scarf purchased at the Nassau County Art Museum's gift shop

Teal half-circle veil purchased from DOMBA booth at AZ Ren Faire

Lime and silver striped cotton harem pants

Ideally, this costume would also involve my green full-circle skirt, but there wasn't room for it in my luggage

She Took Her Own Picture

She Took Her Own Picture

From the intro (written by Natalie J McCarthy) of She Took Her Own Picture..

There are approximately 3.3 billion women in the world, all of whom doubtlessly live a split existence: the person viewed by others, molded according to culture, and created for display to the rest of the world, and the true self, the woman who exists in, of, and for herself. When Laurel Fiszer started posting her photos on flickr.com a few years ago, she certainly did not imagine plunging into an existential debate. Instead, she noticed that female self-portrait photographers were often seen as narcissistic princesses who had to defend their work against an onslaught of criticism—most of which was not directed toward the photograph’s technical merits. When Laurel founded the Female Self Portrait Artists’ Support Group, her primary goal was to create a place online where female photographers could share self-portraits and receive constructive criticism in a supportive, encouraging, and non-judgmental environment.

Since its founding, the Group has grown to include hundreds of women from all over the globe--all of whom share a passion for interpreting, inventing and reinventing themselves through pictures. Despite this commonality, the artists come from different countries and cultures, demonstrate diverse worldviews in their photos, and have distinct artistic motivations. Members of the Group hail from Latin America, Europe, North America, Oceania, and the Caribbean. Some within the Group are professional photographers with an accomplished body of work; others only recently picked up a camera and are working out their own sense of focus, light, and composition. Moreover, not every artist is catapulted into self-portraiture for the same reason. Many do it for lack of other models. Other women appreciate the creative control that self-portraiture affords them, and some embark on a self-portrait series as a form of therapy, self-discovery, or self-empowerment. Still more women photograph themselves as a feminist statement; for them, self-portraiture is a way of removing themselves from a male-artist/female-object paradigm. These cultural, geographic, and artistic differences do more than add to the diversity of the Group; they more importantly highlight the diversity and complexity of all women, not just photographers, and not just women with access to computers, internet connections, and digital cameras. The Group’s photographic campaigns about women’s issues, such as domestic abuse and mental health, highlight each photographer’s quest to portray not only herself, but also her place within the world’s collective of women.

This overarching female experience is evident in group members’ common need to defend their work. The artists in this collection have stood up against all-too-common misconceptions of self-portraiture: Only an egomaniac would photograph themselves! You’re so self-absorbed! On the other side of the critical spectrum, female self-portrait artists often hear that photos of pretty girls are not art; rather, they are magazine ads, fashion spreads, pornography or eye candy. These criticisms present female self-portrait artists with an exciting and powerful opportunity: the chance to categorically refute antiquated notions of the woman’s role as an art object, and to create a new, empowered vision of the female model.

She Took Her Own Picture is certainly constructed upon this feminist foundation. However, while this book brings to light women’s own empowered visions of self, it also presents a collection of first-rate photography. At the end of the day, the Female Self Portrait Artists’ Support Group is a collective of women photographers who strengthen their friendship by sharing inspired, artistic, and well-executed photographs. With She Took Her Own Picture they bring you into their circle of friends and share their art with you.

This is not the front cover, this is merely an advertisement, a little sampler of what you will see in the finished product. Stay tuned.

Street Fashion In London

    street fashion
  • Japan began to emulate Western fashion during the middle of the 19th century. By the beginning of the 21st century it had altered into what is known today as 'street fashion'.

  • Street fashion is a term used to describe fashion that is considered to have emerged not from studios, but from the grassroots. Street fashion is generally associated with youth culture, and is most often seen in major urban centers.

Regent Street

Regent Street

According to Wikipedia:

"Regent Street is one of the major shopping streets in London's West End, well known to tourists and Londoners alike, and famous for its Christmas illuminations. It is named after the Prince Regent (later George IV), and is commonly associated with the architect John Nash, although all his original buildings except All Souls Church have since been replaced.

The street was completed in 1825 and was an early example of town planning in England, cutting through the 17th and 18th century street pattern through which it passes. It runs from the Regent's residence at Carlton House in St James's at the southern end, through Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus, to All Souls Church. From there Langham Place and Portland Place continue the route to Regent's Park.

Every building in Regent Street is protected as a Listed Building, at least Grade II status, and together they form the Regent Street Conservation Area.

Beginnings 1811 to 1825

Regent Street is one of the first planned developments of London. The desire to impose order on the medieval street pattern of London dates back to the Great Fire of London (1666) when Sir Christopher Wren drew up plans for rebuilding the city on the classical formal model, but that initiative was lost. It was not until 1811 that John Nash drew up plans for broad, architecturally distinguished thoroughfares and public spaces: Carlton House Terrace on The Mall, Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street and Regent's Park with its grand terraces. The plans were prepared under the authority of the Office of Woods, Forests and Land Revenues, who since 1793 invited designs for Regent's Park, and came to the conclusion that the Park must have a proper road connecting it with the fashionable area around Charing Cross. Nash's plans were submitted to Parliament for approval.

While the park terraces are residential, Regent Street was intended for commercial purposes and consequently did not need gardens or public spaces. The scale of the development was unprecedented in London. The street followed the line of existing roads, and detoured to make efficient use of land belonging to the government. None the less, much demolition was necessary, and many freehold and leasehold interests had to be bought out at current property values. It is thought that the Treasure supported the proposal because, in the aftermath of the lengthy Napoleonic Wars, there was an urgent need to the government to create jobs. Government expenditure was low because the design relied heavily upon private developers, including Nash himself. The buildings were to be let on 99 year leases, and income could be recouped in the form of ground rent.

The design was adopted by Act of Parliament in 1813, and built between 1814 and 1825. The individual buildings were designed by Cockerell, Soane and Nash himself, among others. At first called New Street, it became a dividing line between Soho, which was considered less than respectable, and the fashionable squares and streets of Mayfair.

Rebuilding 1895 to 1927

By the end of the 19th century, fashions in shopping had changed and the original buildings were unsuitable for their purpose. They were small and old fashioned, and consequently they were restricting trade. In the Edwardian era, department stores were principal commercial aspiration. Dickins & Jones, Garrard & Co., Swan and Edgar, Hamleys and Liberty & Co. date from this period although only the last two are still there.

Further, Nash’s buildings were not of the highest quality, using stucco render and composition to imitate stonework; and many of the buildings had been considerably extended and were now structurally suspect. As the 99 year leases came to an end, Regent Street was redeveloped between 1895 and 1927 under the control of the Office of Woods, Forests and Land Revenues (now the Crown Estate).

Regent Street as we see it today is the result of this redevelopment. South of Oxford Circus, none of the original buildings survive.

Regent Street is an example of the Beaux Arts approach to urban design: an assembly ofseparate buildings on a grand scale, designed to harmonise and produce an impressive overall effect. Strict rules were put in place to govern the reconstruction. Each block was required to be designed with a continuous unifying facade to the street, had to be finished in Portland stone, and with a uniform cornice level 66 feet above pavement level, excluding dormers, turrets and mansard roofs. The first redevelopment was Regent House, just south of Oxford Circus. However, the stylistic tone for the rebuilding was set by Reginald Blomfield's Quadrant.

The Quadrant was the subject of considerable debate. The unity of Piccadilly Circus had been upset by the construcion of Shaftesbury Avenue, and the first proposals were unsatisfactory. At the age of 73, the eminent architect Norman Shaw was brought in to resolve the design, and drew up proposals for the Circus and the Q

YOUNG ASIA MAGAZINE - ad/article page

This is our advert/Article page I designed this week for the YOUNG ASIA magazine, that will be published in Belgium and Netherlands as of this month.

As my organization is promotion sponsor we get free publicity, I use that publicity to promote a Chinese model Wu Beilei, that I've worked with a few times. We will now continue to closely work together, as I will try to get her a few steps further. I will do a shoot next week for the next month's issue.

Her photo will be on the cover as well. I will upload it from as soon as I have received the magazine's PDF version.
