Tires in the storm stairs

Tires in the storm stairs

This is a little unusual - unlike the usual scrap tire garbage found everywhere, the storm door stairs were blocked with tires still mounted to their wheels. The reason for this is that you have to pay to dispose of scrap tires, so dumping tires can save you about $2 a tire (cheap inconsiderate bastards). However, the wheels would have still been worth something, even in their rusted state, the steel would have been worth about as much as the scrap tire fee would have cost.

• Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina. Pebble Beach Concours. 2006-08-19 113031PM

• PHOTO © by ARTAMIA: Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina at 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Monterey Bay Peninsula, California, Central Coast, USA.

• The FERRARI P4/5 was publicly revealed on August 18, 2006 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and shown again at the Paris Motor Show in late September.

• Specifications

• The Ferrari P4/5 can accelerate from 0-100 kilometres per hour (0-62 mph) in 3.0 seconds (0.5 seconds quicker than the Enzo). It has a top speed of 233 mph (375 km/h). The car has a frontal area of 1.906 square metres (20.52 sq ft), but the sharp nose and smooth curves mean it has a drag coefficient of only 0.34.

• Upon seeing P 4/5 Luca di Montezemolo felt that the car deserved to be officially badged as a Ferrari and along with Andrea Pininfarina and James Glickenhaus agreed that its official name would be "Ferrari P 4/5 by Pininfarina". Ted West wrote an article in Car and Driver about how this came to be "The Beast of Turin".

• On September 2009, Glickenhaus announced his intention to race a new version of the P4/5 in the 2010 24 Hours Nurburgring. The car, called the P4/5 Competizione, would not be a conversion of his road car but instead an entirely new car with a Ferrari chassis, VIN number and drivetrain. On May 2010 however, it was revealed that the Competizione would in fact be raced in 2011, based on a 430 Scuderia. It would be built to FIA GT2 standards and raced by Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus in an Experimental Class under the direction of Paolo Garella, former Head of Special Projects at Pininfarina.

• Chassis
Much of the suspension was unchanged from the original Enzo, with the same double wishbone suspension at the front and rear, and the same Brembo carbon-ceramic anti-lock disc brakes with diameter of 340 millimetres (13.4 in) at the front and rear.[1] The aluminium alloy wheels are 510 millimetres (20 in) in diameter, the front tyres have codes of ZR 255/35 and the rear, ZR 335/30.

• Exterior
The exterior of the car is made entirely of carbon fibre reinforced plastic and is similar in shape to the Ferrari 330 P4 as Glickenhaus requested, however it has been called a "rolling history of Ferrari-racing-DNA" sharing elements from several historic Ferrari vehicles, not just the 330 P4. The rear window is similar to that of the Ferrari 512S, the side vents are similar to the Ferrari 330 P3 and the nose is similar to that of the Ferrari 333 SP which improves cooling and the car's frontal crash safety. The butterfly doors (similar to those of the McLaren F1) are designed such that even at 160 mph (260 km/h) there is no wind noise. The improved aerodynamics have proven themselves, giving the car greater downforce at the same time as less drag than the Enzo also making the car more stable than the Enzo at high speeds.

• Powertrain
The P4/5 has the same engine as the Enzo Ferrari it was built on, a 65° Dino F140 V12. The 12 cylinders have a total capacity of 5998 cubic centimetres, each with 4 valves. The redline rpm at 8200 and the torque of 485 lb·ft (658 N·m) at 5500 rpm are both the same as the Enzo, but it produces marginally more power with 660 brake horsepower (492 kW) at 7800 rpm. The P4/5 uses the 6 speed semi-automatic transmission of the Enzo with black shifting paddles behind the wheel. It has two directional indicator buttons, one mounted on each side of the steering wheel.

• The Ferrari P4/5 (officially known as the Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina)
is a one-off sports car made by Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari but redesigned by Pininfarina for film director and stock exchange magnate James Glickenhaus. The car was an Enzo Ferrari but the owner James Glickenhaus preferred the styling of Ferrari's 1960s race cars, the P Series. The project cost Glickenhaus US$ 4 million and was officially presented to the public in August 2006 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, but in July 2006 Glickenhaus allowed several websites to publish images of the clay model.

• Development
On March 2005 James Glickenhaus, stock exchange magnate and known car collector, was approached by Pininfarina who asked if he was interested in commissioning a one-off car. Andrea Pininfarina, grandson of the company’s founder later said "The Ferrari 612 Kappa and this P4/5 are the first. But we want to grow this business." indicating that Pininfarina is interested in producing other unique cars. Glickenhaus replied that he would like a modern Ferrari P, and in June of that year he signed a contract with Pininfarina to produce the car including the price, approximately US$4 million though in an interview he said "I feel they gave me more than I expected". Glickenhaus purchased the last unsold Enzo Ferrari and upon receipt of the car he took it to Pininfarina to be redesigned similar to his 1967 Ferrari 330 P 3/4 chassis 0846 which he also delivered to Pininfarina. Pininfarina's styling team leader, Ken Okuyama said that "Pininfari

Signs and Codes - Sarajevo Part 1

Signs and Codes - Sarajevo Part 1

Sarajevo – Bosnia: September 2008 Part 1.

In time this place would act as a physical landmark of so much of what I believe today. At the moment of arrival though it was just another city. Another set of compass points and landmarks that I had yet to make sense of: another wrong turn on my unplanned journey.

As was the case with my journey from Dubrovnik to Mostar, in fact my journey to anywhere new, I develop a powerful attachment to all that I am leaving behind and a powerful revulsion against all that is to come. Despite everything I have learned about how generous a city can be with its secrets for those who take the time, I always find myself casting a critical eye on the streets and walkways that hurtle past me from the bus or train, blithely dismissing centuries of culture and civility with one fearful thought.

The physical manifestations of the ideologies that have lived in and more recently, wrapped around Sarajevo made it an easy city to hate on first sight. The early morning journey from Mostar to Sarajevo takes you through the glorious Neretva valley where the lurid green flow of the river sways below totemic cliffs and peaks. The bus slides through quiet villages and soars above hazy, dawn drenched towns. Visions of a quiet pastoral life flash before you while dreams of an easy world dance around your tired head. Then without warning, the mountains drop away and you enter the valley floor that has housed Sarajevo for so many years. The single lane road multiplies effortlessly into a multi-laned carriageway populated by a disorientating blend of charabancs and glistening modern vehicles. The warming soil and cloud kissed trees of moments ago give way to a formal queue of concrete towers and rigid lines. The gentle hope of that dawn light gives way to a smothering blanket of grey and black.

Later you will learn that this road you so quickly despise is the infamous sniper alley. The knowledge that you have travelled it already, albeit through the television screen hits home hard. When there is time to look back retrospectively your instinctive negativity feels like the insecure twitches of someone who has had it far easier than they ever knew.

When you look on those city landmarks again as you leave the city, you know that you have seen the desperate people of Sarajevo hurtle their juddering cars along its exposed strip of road making frantic and all too often, failed breaks for freedom. You realise that you have seen the jaded yellow icon of the Holiday Inn standing as an emblem of hope in documentary footage and movies. You know that you watched the explosions that caused the bullet holes and shell wounds that scar the concrete towers live or reported back like some absurd highlights reel of a war that you, or we, did not participate in intellectually, physically or morally. When you look on those city landmarks again when you leave the city, you want to walk up and down every street to say sorry.

"Saturday Club"

Hello My Dear Flickr Friends.

This post is about one project that I did with my Korean friend (Sim).

“Saturday Club” was a project with one very poor community of Mpika North of Zambia. They live very far way, without electricity and water potable. The “Tazara Comunnity” was the place that we used to worked with Water and Sanitation. During the weekend we created a “Saturday Club” for spend some time with the children, who doesn’t have many things to do.

There they use to play games with stones, (kabulila), play with tires they love this and most of the boys play soccer with a ball made by plastic bag. During the “Saturday Club” we had clubs or sometimes class about Geographic, Art and Sport. Just things for have some entertainment for the children, the subject Geographic they choose, because they love to learn something about the world outside of Africa. Specially because Sim is From Korea (Asia) and me from Brazil (South America) two different place, peoples from where they didn’t know, just old man knows Brazil because of Soccer “ Ronaldo, Pele.etc”…hehehehe

For the clubs we didn’t have any support, because the clubs was just in the weekend afternoon, (our free time) our NGO worked just until Saturday but morning and just for make week meeting.

Anyway we loved those children so we decided to do something with then, not just working with water and sanitation. Of course they need this, but we also had some extra energy (volunteer heart when see Africa children..hehehehe) and wanted give some fun and entertainment to then.

The problem was support. But we got permission to use some place on the village that we could made the meetings and the material we bought at Usa, by a cheap price.
The ”problem” later I will write why (“), was the language, most of the children knows very few English, because they live very far way, many of them can’t go to school, because is far, some they are strong and they go by walk, but they suffer with the problem in the school has no food and they can’t bring food from home, most of them have just one meal in the night. There children use to eat, sugarcane, guava and caterpillar. So the most smart and strong, they bring these things and go to school, so they know English a little bit better.

So this children who knows English better, they helped us to translate what we say and they couldn’t understand, because of there they speak ” Bemba” local language.

As I said “problem” with this (“), because of me and my friend from South Korea. Before we went to Africa, we did a promise to each other, let’s never complain about any situation, or think that we have a problem or life is hard. Yes life at there was very hard for us, but we got used, we learned there, that the human being can get used with everything. So we never believe in a problem, if we had a problem we could have a solution or try to do something.

And we tried to do something for that very far community, where has some children who never saw a white man or never saw a digital camera, mp3 and this kinds of electronics things that we made a extension of our body or some peoples doesn’t live without.

In the beginning we thought. “ OH Daam We can’t do anything nice for then”. But that time we didn’t know that much about how powerful the simple things can be. Uaaaaauuuu I swear that time we have one old geographic book, with a world map, 500 white paper ,5 box of colors crayon and 5 box of pencil and pen and one soccer ball. This was for 40 children, but this
was more then enough that time. First time that we just draw, We just gave the paper to then and crayon, and they got crazy, really happy, and they started to draw and draw, and put so many colors in the draw. We couldn’t give any subject to then or even talked about something with then..hehehehe..So we decide the club is “Just do it”…hehehehe..After 1.30 hour they started to show up what they did and show to everyone there and talking a lot in the local language, some of they run to then house to show the draw to the parents and comeback.

Was very funny situation our first Club…hehehehe..And the good point they did this everything in the floor, me and SIM we couldn’t stay more then 30 minutes drawing in the floor, this was so difficult and painful…hehehehe

Anyway we loved this experience with the children, the community was so far (23 miles by bike) under to the Africa sun..heheheehe. But when we just saw then smile, ohhhh man this was too much nice, we just forget about everything, and “Just do it for then”.

This was a part of my amazing trip at Africa…..I hope you guys like

If you think you have a problem, or you are a problem, just look around you and try to think again….

“Nobody Can't do everything, but Everyone can do something”

Turkish Delight VI

Turkish Delight VI

The evening happened to be a great one and the roof terrace gave me the shot I had been looking for all night. This was where our exploration would end on this first day, on a roof, around a beer, happy and tired. We had arrived at a deserted airport, in the middle of the night, had made our way through the outskirts of a city of 17 million, had mastered local public transportation, found the best hostel in town, slept in a Starbucks despite hang found the best hostel in town, explored the city, tasted its delicacies and followed destiny all the way up onto this place, to have this view and a pint of lager. It was quite a a fulfilling experience I must say.

Aside from that, we had been able to overcome all of what we had expected and be humbled in our naive a-priori of what we would find. This place was as little "cliche" as any other and trumped in cheesiness by any European capital's tourist attractions. This place was real. And yes, there were a lot of tourists, and yes there were a lot of cheap cheesy tourist shops, and yes you could buy counterfeit fashion and watches on every street corner. But between all this lay a couple million people's every-day life, the economical nodal point of two continents and last but not least, one of the oldest centers of civilization and religion known to the western world. And that is what made Istanbul so vibrant, so fascinating and so unlike what anyone of us could have imagined. There was no more religious frenzy than around the vatican, there were no more burkas than in the center of Geneva and when the Muezzin sung, it filled the streets with a magical atmosphere that was in no way the menacing demonstration of power certain political figures at home would've liked us to be afraid of. It became more and more apparent that we had been mislead by what we had been taught by the media, politics and as of recently, our very Constitution. This was a city of islamic majority and it was noticeable all across, it had however no more mosques than an average Italian town has churches and chapels and people went about their lives just as we usually do. Why do I mention all this? Because my visit of Istanbul was my first visit to asia and at the same time, my first visit to a place of mainly islamic belief. Even though I do not have and never had a particularly polarized opinion on the issue and like to think of myself of an open-minded individual, I did notice that all my growing up in central Europe had left its mark. I arrived in Istanbul with an apprehension of what I would come across and even though I'm not necessarily proud of it, I did feel quite surprised at the deepest of me, regarding the entirely different reality I had found. The fact is that I could live in Istanbul every day with having to learn nothing more than the language. The cultural differences, although existent, are minute to the point of being mere nuances when you come to think about it. I guess one only really can see up to the horizon. Whether we want it or not, our image of what lies beyond will always be colored by those who report it. It is therefore essential not to leave it at hearing the stories. If the enlightenment won't come upon one's head, one has to bring oneself closer to the light.

This is what we had inadvertently done and while contemplating the sheer beauty of the golden horn's entry that night, I was seeing that much more.

  • A body's relative mass or the quantity of matter contained by it, giving rise to a downward force; the heaviness of a person or thing

The Spirit of Goodyear

The Spirit of Goodyear

Yes, the Goodyear Blimp actually flies by our house! I catch it several times per year, but it's rarely RIGHT over our house, as in this case. How far away is it? Maybe a half mile, but it's hard to tell because it's difficult to triangulate its position. When I see it, I race into my room, snatch my camera, feverishly mount it on the tripod, and fire off a few quick pictures. Several years ago, the blimp did fly right over the house, but I was not able to get any photos of it. One day, I hope, I will.

This photo was acquired using 15X zoom.

The Goodyear Company has three blimps (non-rigid airship), and one of these, the Spirit of Goodyear, is stationed in Akron, where the Goodyear Company has a large tire factory. You can distinguish the SoG by the yellow stripe under the "Good Year" lettering. The GZ-20 class blimps are 58 m long, 18 m tall, and 15 m wide. That's 192 x 59.5 x 50 ft.

What's really cool is that Goodyear is retiring these by 2014, when they will be replaced by real zeppelins (rigid airships, with a frame for the buoyant gas), I think about 240 feet long. These elegant airships once plied the skies in the first third of the twentieth century. They were efficient, but more primitive materials science and a lack of satellite imagery to aid meteorology hampered the utility of this technology. The British R-101 dirigible, and America's two largest airships, the USS Macon and Akron (785 ft long), crashed because of inclement weather conditions. (America has violent weather!) We wouldn't sell the Nazis helium (they had no supply of it on German soil, but we got it from our natural gas wells), so they used explosive hydrogen. The Hindenburg, the largest zeppelin along with the Graf Zeppelin II, was, get this, 804 feet long. That means it was 60-70 TIMES the volume of this blimp. It ignited at Lakehurst, New Jersey, where it docked after a transatlantic flight.

I loved reading about these dirigibles as a kid, but my father can outdo me easily. He used to WATCH the Hindenburg float near the farm he grew up on, not far from Lakehurst, NJ. From several miles away, he said it still looked huge.

The fins and the overall design of a blimp or zeppelin can utilize Bernoulli's principle to give the blimp a little lift like one sees for the wings of an airplane. This only occurs, though, once the blimp is moving forward. However, by far the main reason that the blimp floats is because it is lighter than air. The addition of lighter-than-air helium renders the overall blimp slightly less dense than the surrounding air. Therefore, the weight of air the blimp displaces is more than the weight of the blimp. In this case, the buoyant force on the blimp is greater than the gravity force on the blimp, and it rises. That's Archimedes' Principle.

Convair B-36J Peacemaker

Convair B-36J Peacemaker

Responding to the U.S. Army Air Forces' requirement for a strategic bomber with intercontinental range, Consolidated Vultee (later Convair) designed the B-36 during World War II. The airplane made its maiden flight in August 1946, and in June 1948 the Strategic Air Command received its first operational B-36. Some B-36s served as photographic reconnaissance aircraft, and others were adapted to launch and retrieve specially modified RF-84F/K reconnaissance planes.

Powered by six Pratt & Whitney R-4360 engines, the B-36J cruised at 230 mph, but for additional bursts of speed its four General Electric J47s increased the maximum speed to 435 mph. It carried 86,000 pounds of nuclear or conventional bombs. When production ended in August 1954, more than 380 B-36s had been built for the U.S. Air Force. In 1958-1959, the USAF replaced the B-36 with the all-jet B-52. Although never used in combat, the B-36 was a major deterrent to enemy aggression. Making the last B-36 flight ever, the aircraft on display flew to the museum from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., on April 30, 1959.

As recovered to Yalding

As recovered to Yalding

The RSR has rescued this spectacularly derelict 1937 Rover 20 – now the parts are urgently for sale!

We were recently approached by Orchard View Classics of Yalding, near Maidstone. They had retrieved a seriously derelict Rover 20, and wanted to find a good home for the useful parts. After some discussion, the Committee member nearest to Yalding, Richard Bryant, went with his wife Anne to see the remains and here’s an extract from his report:

“Anne and I visited Orchard View Classics at Yalding on Friday morning September 9th and I attach photographs which I took of the car. Chris Wenban of Orchard View explained that they had been put in touch with the lady whose father had owned the car either from new or from when it was very young. He used to take her to school in it. For whatever reason, in approx 1962, he put the car in his garage and refused to allow anyone to touch it. With the passage of time, the garage collapsed on the car and trees grew through it. At some point, the owner died and it appears that recently the property was to be cleared and the lady did not want the car to be simply cleared but would like someone to get some benefit from it. Orchard View have been given the car by her to dispose of. They had to borrow a trailer to move it from its resting place to their premises). It appears that he wishes to get back the cost of the recovery and intends to pass on any surplus to the local hospice.

As you can see, the car is clearly beyond restoration as a Rover 20 Sports Saloon. It would require a new chassis and a new body! However, because the car was complete when it was parked the engine, gearbox, back axle and suspension and all the engine ancillaries are still in place. The engine is not seized and is full to the correct level with very old but clean oil. The instrument panel is complete with the instrument glasses intact. The garage have preserved all the glass and the headlights, side lights and radiator shell are all remarkably sound. The radiator itself is also complete. Chris showed us the items, all in reasonable condition, which he is keeping indoors which include the interior light lens and surround, the grease gun and tyre gauge, the radiator cap and the Bakelite cover over the ignition leads which is in perfect condition.

The makers plate is still attached to the lower portion of the nearside bulkhead and shows 1937 model car number 761186. (the last digit is difficult to read. Clearly the garage do not want the car sitting on their forecourt for a long period of time and so a decision needs to be taken quickly.”

Well, that decision was taken quickly, the club has purchased the car, Events Secretary Nick Dunning has moved the ‘heap’ to the Surrey/West Sussex premises of D & G Classics (07748 983948, e-mail JYX95K@aol.com) and all the parts are now for sale. They are of interest, obviously, to the select band of Rover 20 hp owners, although many of the parts are common to the contemporary 16 hp. We would ask anyone who is interested in buying any parts to get in touch with Nick as soon as possible, as he will not want the mortal remains lying around for a long time, and the Club needs to recoup its purchase price as soon as possible. Any profit will be put towards running the Club Spares Store.

Found this beautiful auto among a club of cars at Fuddrucker's in Thousand Oaks, CA today.

From WikiPedia:
For 1934, both Chrysler and its junior running mate, DeSoto, were scheduled to offer the Airflow. DeSoto was assigned to offer nothing but Airflows; Chrysler, however, hedged its bets and continued to offer a six-cylinder variant of its more mainstream 1933 model cars. The Airflow used a flathead I8 engine and was produced in both 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan variants. It is believed that only 3 1934 Airflows are still in existence.

No Let Down as Ravens Cruise Past Denver, 31-17

by Perry Green

It can be difficult for an NFL team to avoid a let-down loss after pulling off an emotional win the week before, but the Baltimore Ravens made it look easy as they earned their third straight victory Oct. 10 with a 31-17 win against the Denver Broncos at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

A week after the Ravens managed a huge come-from-behind win against their archrival Pittsburgh Steelers, the team maintained their energy and pummeled Denver with their running game, rushing for 233 yards. Baltimore backs Ray Rice, Willis McGahee and Le'Ron McClain all contributed to the rushing attack, which allowed Baltimore to control the time of possession and hold the ball for more than 36 minutes compared to Denver's 23 minutes.

By the time the final whistle, Baltimore had simply scored too many points while keeping Denver's explosive passing attack off the field.

The win was sealed for the Ravens when...
Veteran tailback Willis McGahee broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run to push Baltimore's lead to 31-10 with five minutes left in the game. The Ravens had been running all over Denver's defense during the entire drive—and for most of the second half. The Broncos scored another touchdown to make the final score 31-17, but they had no chance to mount a comeback with the Ravens controlling the clock with a steady running game.

Outstanding Player of the Game:
Third-year running back Ray Rice earned his first 100-yard rushing performance of the season with 27 carries for 133 yards and two touchdowns. He didn’t break a run longer than 18 yards, but stayed patient behind his blocks and picked up positive yards every time his number was called. Rice said he was particularly proud of how the team was able to run the ball when needed after developing most of their offense by passing during their first four games. He credits the offensive line for making it all happen.

"I've never seen a group work harder," Rice said of his blockers. "Those guys work hard; they work very hard. I always have faith in them and the running game. I've been running with those guys for three years...they know where I want to run the ball, they get to the spots and all I do is tell them to give me a crack. I don’t need much space; I'm a little guy. But those guys are the reason we were successful."

Unsung Heroes of the Game:
Other than Rice, no player outperformed veteran kicker Billy Cundiff, who booted four of his six kickoffs for touchbacks, limiting the opportunities for Denver's dangerous kick returners to make a big return. Cundiff also converted his only field goal try of the game on a 37-yard attempt.

"He's been as good as any kicker in the league as far as kicking off," said Ravens head coach John Harbaugh. "He's also making field goals. It takes a lot of pressure off your kickoff team [making those kicks]."
Ravens' rookie tight end Ed Dickson also shined, hauling in a 58-yard catch on the first drive of the game. Besides making the longest catch for any Raven this season, Dickson also contributed in the run-blocking scheme, helping open up rushing lanes for Rice and company

More Game Notes:
The Ravens came into the Sunday matchup as the top-ranked passing defense in the league, while Denver was ranked as the best passing offense. Denver earned the ranking as Kyle Orton tossed the ball for 314 yards, two touchdowns and a passer rating of 104.5. But Baltimore did limit Orton from putting up the kind of numbers he’s posted so far this season, including nearly 350 yards last week against Tennessee and nearly 500 yards in Week 3 against the Colts. He currently leads the NFL with 1,733 passing yards in just five games.

"The Ravens beat us in every phase of the game," Orton said. "We didn’t do nearly enough to beat a good team on the road. We're going to have to play better."

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis led his team with five tackles, but cornerback Fabian Washington made more of an impact with four pass deflections.

"Denver isn’t afraid to throw it 50-plus times, and that's what they do, so we knew we had to practice, I would say, that much harder because they're going to throw the ball so much you don’t want to ever get tired out there," Washington said. "I think we stepped it up. We held the passing game down pretty much."

Next Up:
The Ravens will hit the road to face the New England Patriots (3-1 overall) in Gillette Stadium on Oct. 17. If Baltimore pulls off the win, it will be the third road victory they’ve earned against a top-ranked team this season.
