I dove with the Bottom Time yesterday. We left Barnegat Inlet with 8 persons on board - 6 customers, and the Captain and Co-Captain.
Our destination was the San Saba (aka "Magnolia"), a freighter sunken in 1918 by a German mine.

(This freighter was built 1879, powered by coal-fired steam. She was sunk on October 1918, while heading south from New York to Florida. The San Saba was carrying general cargo for the US Railroad administration when it struck a mine off the New Jersey coast. The mine was set by the German U-boat U-117.)

It didn't take long to see that this was going to be a great day for diving. Only a few thin wispy clouds in the sky, and the water was laying down nicely. When we arrived at the site, Gary hooked us in. The sea had taken on that glass-like appearance. A small fishing boat was anchored next to us, and they seemed to be having a bit of luck, so we were hopeful of good fishing below. After jumping in, it was immediately apparent that the vis was going to be great on this dive. 20ft down the line and I could see the strobe flashing on the bottom! I could still see the bottom of the boat at 50-60 ft. Bottom vis was 40-50 feet.

Once we touched down and got situated, my buddy and I headed out. The San Saba is really broken apart, so there's lots of nooks for fish to hang out in. We headed back towards to boilers, and almost immediately I was able to put my gun to use, shooting a 21 inch tog.

Second dive we dug the rubble pile, finding a bunch of screws, a shotgun shell (the metal cap was all that was left) and part of a small crate. Just before we headed up, I shot a 22 inch Sea Bass, and grabbed a small lobster.

Since the vis was so good, lights were only needed for peeking in holes. The water was warm - high 50's - and we got to a max depth of 80 fsw on both dives.

Back on the surface, we swapped fish stories with the other divers and watched as the "big ones" started coming up. Gary brought up a 8 1/2 lb Tog, and Dennis soon arrived with a 9 1/2 pounder! Dennis also recovered an interesting, octagonal green glass bottle that looked like an olive jar.

Back at the dock we enjoyed a few beers while we cleaned the fish, Feeding the skins to the seagulls. Another great day of diving the Jersey coast!

Day 3 Dive 2 Fish watching us on the Thistlegorm

Poor old Thistlegorm (Blue Thistle in Gaelic). A cargo ship, launched in 1940, she was carrying munitions from Glasgow and on her way to the British 8th Army in Egypt. The Med was too dangerous so she sailed round Cape of Good Hope and was anchored waiting clearance to proceed to the Suez Canal when she was spotted by German bombers and was an easy target. 9 men died in the attack. Amongst her cargo were 2 steam locomotives, railway wagons, spare parts for aeroplanes and vehicles, rubber boots, tyres, lorries, motorbikes, rifles, all sorts or ammunition/shells and much more. She now lies between 15m and 30m and is an extremely popular dive spot.

I'd originally planned this shot when the clocks changed from British Summer Time to Greenwich Mean Time a few weeks ago but used another one that day instead. Stuck for a photo with an hour left in the day I took the shot for today instead. I like watches but while this one looks cool, it's only a cheap Timex fitted with a Citizen divers strap I had lying around.

KARO PEOPLE.....
The Karo, with a population of about 1000,are a small group of people who live on the east banks of the Omo River. They are surrounded by relatively wealthy and strong groups,in terms of cattle and population size. Karo, whose neighbors especially the Hamar (to the South East ) ,Bana (to the east ),Bashada (to the East ), the Mursi (to the North)and Nyangatom (to the west across the Omo river ) know them by the name Kara,speak a south Omotic language.

The main subsistance crops of the Karo are sorghum ,maize and beans .They are supplemented by bee-keeping and more recently fishing.They plant fields using rain,flood retreat and river bank cultivation but the most important source of grain production is river bank farming than the other two which is carried out both along omo river and on the shores of Lake Diba.

The most striking thing about Karo people's symbolic and ornamental expressions is the painted body and face decorations. This is an elaborate process, which ranges from fine and elaborate details to rough, but striking paintings traced with the palms or fingers. The most beautiful expression is in the facial and chest paintings that combine white (chalk), black (charcoal), yellow, ochre, and red earth. They often imitate the spotted plumage of a guinea fowl. Karo woman scarify their chests to beautify themselves .The complete scarification of a man's chest indicates that he has killed an enemy or a dangerous animal. The scars are cut with a knife or razor blade and ash is rubbed in to produce a raised effect. The wearing of a grey and ochre clay hair bun also indicates the killing of an enemy or a dangerous animal. Both forms of decoration carry the same symbolic meaning for the Karo as they do for the Hamar.

At the end of the harvest and at times of initiation and marriage, the Karo come together to enjoy dances. During the moonlight dances, the Karo men leap joining one another in long lines towards the women, who come forward one by one to select the man whom they favour. Afterwards Karo man and women, coupling themselves, perform rhythmic and pulsating dances, thrusting their hips one against the other in the dusty atmosphere of early evening. These dances often lead to marriage after the initiate has successfully accomplished the Pilla (the Jumpping of the Bulls ).
A Karo man may take as many wives as he can afford, but usually he marries only two or three.

Publication Concept, Art Direction & Design

In October 2008, L.A. based writer and curator, Aaron Rose visited London and Paris to play shows with his band 'The Sads'. In anticipation of his visit Paperback interviewed him and asked him to compile a collection of images by the artists he was working with at the time.

The interview and images were compiled into a 20 page tabloid. While Rose was in London and Paris you could find the publication in bookshops, record shops, & boutiques across London and Paris and it was free.

A lunar phase or phase of the moon is the appearance of the illuminated portion of the Moon as seen by an observer, usually on Earth. The lunar phases vary cyclically as the Moon orbits the Earth, according to the changing relative positions of the Earth, Moon and Sun.

This was my final piece for my AS exam on Rhythms& Cycles. I've focused on rhythms and cycles within time and presented this in a surreal way (inspired by artists such as Salvador Dhali and Vladamir Kush).

The figure of the old man can be depicted as God or Chronos (the greek mythological personification of time) he sits and weaves the net of time. I have also based alot of the piece on Louis MacNeice's poem, "The Sunlight on the garden" and have focused on the lines "We cannot cage the minute/ within its nets of gold". Therefore the golden net serves further purposes, and as he stitches the net I think of the phrase "a stitch in time saves nine". The fact that the net reaches out amongst the waves, the phrase also comes to mind, "time and the tide wait for no man". As the tide has a rhythmic relationship with the moon, the phases of the moon can be seen nearby (also a cyclic occurance). Finally there is the connection with the "string theory" which states time to be a dimension like gravity, and to be represented like a net expanding over the universe (therefore chronos's net stretches over the sea: a symbol for the entire cosmos). It is the string theory which explains how black holes are created (this can be mirrored in the cyclic maelstrom).

The ship which can be seen on the waves resembels the voyage taken by Magellan in his circumnavigation of the globe using 18 hourglasses.

Furthermore, The central magpie which has flown out of the cage carrying the pocket watch represents the saying "time flies" but also highlights the inability to stop time as "we cannot cage the minute"

The pyramids in the sky are the pyramids of giza which allign with orions belt, this is a cyclic occurance as due to the processional wobble of the world on its axis, star belts move together . In addition, Halleys Comet can be seen in the top right hand corner, although it also has an arrow head to signify the belief of "the arrow of time" - that everything in the arrows past cannot be changed but its future destination is not fixed.

Finally, the clock heart links common ideas of rhythm; the ticking of a clock and the beating of a heart. The bleeding heart also unites the sayings, "time heals all wounds" and a "broken heart"

The full moon is special in so many ways. It seems to be a well known fact that people and animals act up when the moon is full, more babies are born at this phase, and the sight of it rising at sunset can stir some seriously intense emotions if you're watching it with the right person.

It's interesting to me for those reasons, but also just for its sublime beauty through the telescope. What we see when the moon is full is the completely illuminated near side, with virtually no shadows. The sun is directly opposite the moon, shining onto its surface from the same direction that we're looking from. This places all shadows exactly on the far side of the shadow-casters, making them invisible to us. So what we see is purely differences in the reflectivity of the surface features. That's called "albedo" by the astronomical technorazzi.

The western limb is already starting to show some texture in this shot, taken an hour or two after the moment the moon was full. The uneven nature of the surface is clearly evident, especially at the 3 o'clock position. We can also see that Tycho, with its huge ray system, actually has a bit of a dark halo around it. This is fairly common for craters, both large and small.
