All Healthy Options Excluded!

I went on a bike ride with a few friends that are senior management at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Center on Environmental Health Programs. Howie is the director, Andrew is the lead scientist, and Ken is the policy director.

I had an issue earlier in the day that led to me having my cargo bike for the ride. So, they were on rented bikes and I was riding a 70 pound cargo bike -- on a 30 mile ride -- on a reasonably hot day.

We stopped for a drink at a 7-Eleven because I was super parched and it was the closest place I knew of at the moment. We hung outside drinking and snacking. Ken, the policy director, bought some fruit and a juice (the healthiest option available at a 7-11). Andrew, the lead scientist bought Fritos and a soda (frugal and yummy). Howie, the director started to ask questions about incentives to eat healthy at the 7-Eleven.

Turned out, Ken spent 3 times as much as Andrew for his healthy snack. THEN, Andrew noticed the poster in this photo. Howie noticed that for a half hour of minimum wage pay, someone could buy half the calories they needed for a day. He compared it to hunter gatherer days when that much nutrients would have taken half a day to gather. My, we've come so far in convenience.

THEN, Andrew noticed that the multi-grain chips were excluded. "They ban you from eating healthy!" Laughs (and lessons) with the CDC!

This one's for Nicki. A wet morning without views meant the camera stayed stowed. On Dodd Fell I had my breakfast which was the packed lunch from the Golden Lion. I ate the soggy white bread cheese and tomato sandwiches like medicine, conscious of the need for calories, but they were disgusting. This horse was on the descent from Dodd Fell and not far from Hawes. I had decided to keep the running to a minimum to let my achilles recover, but on the descent my knees were competing with my achilles to see which could shout the loudest to tell me that I should pack the trip in and go home.
