No one was sure exactly where the legs had come from... just that they had somehow ended up here... suspended from one side of the window, limp and lacy, like half a pair of drapes.

Sister Margaret found them first. Or at least that was the official story. Many had their doubts, since the window where the legs appeared was in the boys' dormitory.

Some found it difficult to fathom that the boys could have slept through... not just the legs' arrival, but their nearly naked presence. Sister Margaret thought at first it was some kind of prank. Parts from an old dressmaker's dummy. But the feet were intricately boned and veined and muscled in ways that could only be genuine.

And yet the legs, when Sister Margaret pushed them aside to let in more light, were not warm. Nor were they pliable. And when she tried to take them down, she found they were so heavy that, against her better judgment, she was forced to ask the boys' assistance. Some of them, the more devout, refused to even touch the legs. But a few of the badass boys volunteered... as much for the chance to grope female flesh as to score a few points with the Sister... and even they, inexperienced and strange to the whole idea of flesh as they were... were entirely unmoved by the experience. So, too, were the legs.

Sister Margaret called in reinforcements and cleared the boys' dormitory. Four of the school's sturdiest nuns then tried, in unison, to clear the legs from the window. But the legs wouldn't budge. They just hung there, clad in lace, twisting in the pale light. And over the weeks to come they would resist every effort to remove them - from those of the exorcist to those of the carpenter who tried to remove the window itself from the wall, but found his saw so thick with lacy cobwebs that it would not cut.

Finally the nuns agreed the legs must be a sign from God. A sign that it was time to relocate the boys' dorm. And so they moved it, clear across the school, and left this room to the legs and the spiders.

The school has been closed now for more than 40 years. The boys are presumably long grown up and the old nuns have moved into retirement, or died, or... rather late in life, discovered the pleasures of other women, swapping Jesus for Sappho.

No one much cares about the legs any more, or even sees them for that matter. They hang at the window in the long-empty boys' dorm... glowing faintly, gathering dust, a testatment to the undeniable existence of the truly inexplicable.

Politics, Flooding and Poison Ivy

As I was listening to the news coverage this week, everything sounded familiar. I began reflecting on my youth in Manitoba. It was the 1960's. The Canadian dollar was above parity with the US dollar, then 2 years later it was pegged at below parity (to some, the world was coming to an end and someone in the Winnipeg Free Press created the Diefenbuck!), the Red River was threatening to flood Winnipeg (an annual event but sometimes more serious) and Poison Ivy and mosquitoes were about to launch another attack on my sensitive skin.

Now, 50 years later I'm sitting listening to the news: Canada is getting ready for another election; the Canadian dollar is above parity; Winnipeg is preparing for more floodwaters (could be pretty serious again this year); and I'm advising people to watch out for Poison Ivy. Someone even mentioned that the world might be coming to an end (again)!.

The Winnipeg mosquitoes will have to fend for themselves! It's hockey playoff-time in Canada!

So I finally decided to upload a picture! IT'S PLAYOFF TIME! CATCH THE FEVER! Notice how the Vancouver media puts the Canucks first playoff game at a higher priority than the tragic hit and run accident of a 4 year old boy. Crazy? Us? Nawww.....
(I would like to talk this space to embarrass the people who's home teams did NOT make the playoffs (Toronto) or did NOT clinch the Northwest (Calgary)...harsh words but they had to be said.

I Started with a really dark red brownish background. Then I added the base photo of the bar. Next I cut out the window in the back and placed a red wings player behind it. For that player I placed an inner shadow. Then i started adding red wings items such as the poster that i fit into the frame and blurred. I added the red wings logo on the pool table and free transformed it to looked turned as if it belonged on the center of the table and played with its opacity. i placed a mug on the table and also blurred that and added a drop shadow and the satin effect. For the pool ball i placed on the pool table I aslo put a drop shadow as well as the satin effect. On top of the ball i placed a small logo. The hockey stick was placed and turned to look as if it was leaning on the pool table. For the main focus of the hockey player I used an outer an inner glow to emphasize him. right after i made a copy of the light overhead because the Stanley cup was originally in front of the light which looked natural and placed the copy directly over top the original and over part of the cup. Lastly I added the text of Detroit with the type tool and distorted it to make it look as if it was written across the light fixture.

The Finals are held the last day before Christmas break, complete with FlyOver, National Anthem, Halftime Show, and a stunning wooden replica of the Stanley Cup. Also, faux Jumbotron! This year, these amazing posters went up the morning of the big hockey showdown.

*You can only talk smack if it is trade/craft related. SO the bookbinders will "round your spine" or "gild your edges", the luthiers will "bend your ribs" or "set your neck", carpenters will "plane" something, etc.

This is the 2004-05 Knoxville Ice Bears' American Heart Association "Go Red for Women" jersey of Darren Cain. The jersey was worn during a the Knoxville Ice Bears match against the Asheville Aces on February 3, 2004. Crest and all patches are stitched. It is a very nice jersey although the wear is very light due to being used for one game only.

Generational Players

I shot this with a simple objective in mind, to show the growth of table hockey through the years, with the life size hockey puck in the background for perspective. There was little setup, just standing the players in such a way to show the development of the players over the years. The furthest back has the flat plastic players known throughout the late 60's through the early 2000's. The middle players are from the 1990's Wayne Gretzky's Overtime Hockey version, and the foreground players are from the current "Stiga" brand. I practiced playing with F-stops on each shot, with the goalies shot at f-32 (a 3 second exposure) and the players were shot at f 1.8 (I don't remember the exposure but it was near instantaneous).

From RZSS website : - Drills (Mandrillus leucophaeus) are primates that are closely related to baboons and mandrills. The drill is similar in appearance to the mandrill, but lacks the distinctive face coloration of that primate. In the wild, drills mostly live in the lowland and coastal forests of Western Africa. Drills are found in the countries of Cameroon, Nigeria, and on the coastal island of Bioko.

Because this species’ population has declined by 50% over the past 30 years, the drill is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as an Endangered species. This means that the species is facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.

Rusty Doesn't Watch Hockey As A Rule But ...

... tonight our Vancouver Canucks are playing the Chicago Blackhawks in the playoffs. Rusty wants me to hurry up and get these plants planted so we can watch the game together. Vancouver has never won the Stanley Cup and while we live on a very busy street EVERYONE must be home, in front of their TVs, as there is no traffic what-so-ever.

If we get further along in the playoffs I just KNOW Rusty is going to start pestering me for a Canucks flag or a ROBERTO LUONGO bobblehead or something. I can see it in her eyes already.

Communal viewing

In the third period the tv's went out. People were getting restless, trying to watch a game on the blank screens. Luckily some people had smart phones and were able to stream the games. People surrounded anyone who had something that looked like a live stream of hockey, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive winning goal
