BICYCLE REPAIR I used to cycle a lot, untill I abandoned this hobby about 2,5 years ago, for reasons I can't remember now. Yesterday, I went out into our backyard to look for my bicycle. It was still there, but it was really dirty because of the rain, wind, sun, snow and hail it had seen during the past 2,5 years. Some obscure climbing plant had gotten hold of the spokes and a spider had found a home under the saddle. I washed the bicycle with stuff Rene usually uses to wash the car. Rene went to the bicycle shop and bought about € 15,00 worth of new parts (screws and gear cable, basically), replaced the parts that had gotten rusty, cleaned the chain and lubricated it, and guess what? Like a metallic pastel, blue-green-ish thing going on. Unless you're within about 10 feet it comes off more of a silver pearlescent effect. Beautiful work over at COAT, and a great build by Greg Morris of Milholland. The parts selection for the touring bike are perfect in both function and appearance. "Hmm...", I thought, "That sounds weird - maybe it's the chain, or the bottom bracket. I hope it's not the BB, cause that would suck..." I went about my ride merrily, making a mental note to give the bike a once-over to see if I could find the noise. My first thought was actually - maybe the water bottle cage got loose or something and was hitting the frame. So, checked the chain, it was cool. Checked thr crank - cool. Clean the wheel - checked *that*, just fine - little tight, but easily fixable and then, when setting the chain tension again, I noticed a big crack in the chainstay. I took a double take, thinking it may just be the paint flaking off or dirt from a sticker or the like, but, nope it's def. a cracked chainstay. A pity. Never had problems with the Surly Steamroller before and this whole explanation isn't meant as a diss to Surly - far from it. Just something that happened, unexpectantly.
