Senegalese Ring (2009, IT) Ring 153.3 Here in Italy there are many immigrants from Senegal. I noticed that they wear (both sexes) a very particular ring. It looks a bit like a seal ring but the face is blank. I asked them about it. They said that inside of the ring head there is their personal amulet ("portafortuna"). It can be anything but usually it is a small piece of paper with a part from the Coran. I met a jeweller from Senegal. He showed me the open ring. After the amulet is placed into the ringhead they put glue onto the surface and they slide the top part into the other. So it is closed forever and it's waterproof. The jeweller said that he can't advice me what amulet would be appropriate for me, so he only sells the empthy ring. I keep collecting data on this ring (I found nothing on the internet). I am very impressed by the concept of enclosing a secret forever in a jewel, I plan to walk around this topic. This ring I made is very similar to the original form. Usually it is round or square with some simple engravings. Fix It Friday On occasion I enjoy participating in I HEART Faces' Fix It Friday. This is NOT my photo, just my edit. The first image is SOOC. The second and third images are my edits. For the second image I boosted the exposure and warmed the photo and then ran my Color Pop Action. I also cropped and got rid of the tree and shoulder. For the the third photo I ran my Classic B&W action on the second image already processed with my Color Pop Action. R. side of motor home This is the location of the front awning bracket that got pulled off at 65 MPH. This area was not filled up with anything. I wanted to get to that, but it was waiting for me to find a couple "roundtoits" first. A simple fix in my view. Something to be address though. I only camped in good weather and stored the motor home in a barn. Therefore, no big rush to fix. Bullfight It's quite hard to post those photos. Bullfighting is very long traditional event in Spain but people like me from outside of Spain might think it's brutal. For me it's more like documenting what I saw not I liked it so much. I think it should be forbidden. From a technical point of view it has three parts called “tercios” or “suertes”: sticks, barbed darts and finally the matador’s stick with a red flag attached to it. The president of the fight, which includes six fights lasting 20 minutes each. When the bull enters and during the first part, the matador in his traditional costume raises the red and gold flag. He makes sweeping motions with the cape and helpers both on foot and on horseback drive their lances into the bull, gauging the liveliness and characteristics of their opponent. During the second part of the fight three pairs of darts are driven into the bull’s neck. In the final and the most distressing part of the fight the bullfighter becomes a killer. This is the most dangerous part where he attracts the injured animal towards him. At the last moment he must kill the beast with a single thrust of his sword. "For one week a year, thousands of locals and tourists gather, and pay to witness the a ritual which is advertised as glorious and entertaining (for the benefit of pompously dressed up males with questionable skills in avoiding collision with a big animal) but is in fact nothing short of gorry, gruesome and truly sad. Old and sick bulls are chosen to be killed in those rituals, and they are being weakened for weeks before the "fight". They put laxatives in their food and heavy sandbags on their backs. They are often beaten. They file their horns down to the tender quick and they drug them. Prior to the Running, electric prods and sharp sticks are used to rile the bulls in a frenzy. Petroleum jelly is put in their eyes to blind them. Wet newspaper is stuffed in their ears and their vocal cords are cut to prevent the audience to hear their cries. Lances are driven into the bulls' neck muscles so they can't lift their heads. By the time the matador appears the bulls are weak from blood loss and disoriented from being chased in circles. When the "fight" finally begins, the bull is already on the verge of collapsing, held only by his last instinct of survival. All dignity is stripped down from him and he is confused, desperate and suffering. Then, in the ring, the toreador slaughters the bull by stabbing the bull repeatedly in the spine. The bull's death is slow and not just ugly, it's petrifying and maddening. Often he wears long blankets to hide their entrails, which spill out when they are gorged and disemboweled." Six Years Gone. "I turned and sprinted away, watching it float down at me out of the hot blue sky. It hurt my hands again, but this time I hung on. It was a good feeling to snag a long pass, even if it was a coconut. My hands grew red and tender, but it was a good clean feeling and I didn't mind. We ran short, over-the-middle passes and long floaters down the sidelines, and after a while I couldn't help but think we were engaged in some kind of holy ritual, the reenactment of all our young Saturdays-expatriated now, lost and cut off from those games and those drunken stadiums, beyond the noise and blind to the false color of those happy spectacles-after years of jeering at football and all that football means, here I was on an empty Caribbean beach, running these silly pass patterns with all the zeal of a regular sandlot fanatic." Mother, kid (and a dog)... Taking warmth from flood light in a cold winter night. Both (shall I say all) working as domestic help. Though the house is organizing marriage but the domestic help couldn't find a place indoor in a cold wintery night. Alas! Just a note to all the guys who have visited my photostream in recent past. I have been extremely busy with project work and nearly not able to find any time. Hopefully the work pressure would end soon and I will able to live a happy photographic life after that. :) I will try to visit all your photostreams to catch up what all I have missed. Just a kid It always amazes me - the transformation that takes place from little girl (most of them are teenagers) to raving beauty. And they sometimes take such joy, like they are playing dress-up, arriving in jeans, a hoodie and converse, then being draped in luxurious fabrics. This model was thrilled about her gloves , which were softer than a twenty year old t-shirt. As long as it fills most of the frame you can leave the camera in auto exposure, just make sure you've anough shutter speed to keep it sharp. Out the office window - Brownie Flash III I've been curious as to what sort of pictures I could get out of some of my old camera collection. This was taken with a Kodak Brownie Flash III, simple box brownie camera. It's supposed to take 620 film, but I didn't have any problems loading it with a normal 120 spool, using a 620 spool as a take up reel, although the winding was a little stiff. I'm pretty pleased with the results in that I had only a rough idea of the aperture, and shutter speed (it has two settings "I" and "B"). This was taken with the "I" setting which I reckon must be about 1/30 and I guessed at f/8. Zorki 4K Service of Shutter Zorki 4K 2nd test roll. It appeared the camera is producing uneven exposures on my first test roll, so here are the results of my second. Most of these shots show the uneveness being darker on one side (mainly the left hand side of the frames). It is most apparent on the white paper/brick background. In reality the light was even across the paper and the bricks so I deduced a problem with the shutter curtains. On slower speeds inparticular the travel rate of the 2nd curtain was variable. In the first three shots we can see the curtain did not actually close properly at all, hence the curved white area to the left of the frames. I took the camera apart and cleaned/lubricated all components of the mechanism. My third roll should (fingers crossed) show a marked improvement! Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, one big eye, arms and legs... on a sesame seed bun. The saga of the poorly OM-1 continues. After getting it back from the repairman I ran through a couple of rolls rather quickly. And everything looked fine. But that's because I managed to get through two rolls without going over 1/250. When shooting this roll, though - Tri-X at 800 - I had occasion to test out the faster shutter speeds. And it was still off. So this is one of the few shots off that roll that worked. The camera went back to the shop for tweaking today and I've shot a roll that I'll develop tonight, so cross your fingers for me. In case anyone somehow hasn't figured this out, that pretty reddish color is most definitely not my real hair color. I love to dye my hair and, although I switch it up sometimes, reds are my tone of choice. I first dyed my hair in, I think, 7th grade and I haven't see a full head of my natural hair color since. It's some light shade of brown, but I don't really remember what it actually looks like. And I'm pretty cool with that. I've gone blonde (ew); I've gone black (double ew...semi-permanent dye does not agree with my hair, so this one will have to be tried again); I've gone purple and I've gone fire engine red; still, I always come back to red. Old Time Harvesting By Barbara Moyle, Bass Coast Writers Group Happy memories! The hot kitchen smells of burning wood and roast meat. My red-faced grandmother is wearing her big black apron and is unusually, wearing short sleeves. My energetic mother is happy because her family is here. Her cooking is good, especially her apple pie. A crowd of mostly men sit at the table; some are strangers. My father is at the head; his black curls are wet with sweat, his muscular arms suntanned and glowing. His hat with its tattered brim is on the back veranda where the panting dogs wait for work to start again. A delicious smell comes from the paddock where a horse driven sweep scoops up the curing hay. It is driven to a heap and tipped by the driver as the struggling horse plods up and over. My grandfather is forking-up hay to the men on the stack. They are finding low places and asking for ‘more here’ or moving it with their hay forks. It is hard, hot work under a blazing sun. Dust is flying and lips are caked and dry. Everyone is helping; barefooted children are running, running with the dogs, following the horse and rake, following the horse and sweep or being called to the house to run with the afternoon tea of scones, Swiss Roll and billy tea. It is eaten in the paddock beside the haystack which is giving off heat as well as showers of grass seeds into the drinks. No shade, no radios, no newspapers and no reason to lounge. Everyone is happy with the generous harvest; soon another stack grows. At night by lantern light in the shed I watch my father stitching hessian bags to form a stack-cover. I am fascinated by the size of the bag needle and to see my father sewing. Next year there is great excitement! The new labour saving wonder, the Grab Stacker is being assembled.
