Polished Alloy rims Difficult to illustrate, but perhaps the reflections of the spokes show how nicely these rims polished back from the dull oxidized satin finish as received on the 22 year old bike. I just used automotive aluminum wheel polish, applied and buffed off by hand using clean cotton terry rags. These rims quickly returned to near new condition much easier and with better results than I would have expected. These square labels are from the Wolber era of the 1980s Super Champion rims... earlier models had oval labels. And I believe the blue on silver foil indicated the 27 inch size of these rims - rather than red for 700c size. Otherwise, construction and dimensions of the rims had remained the same. This photo was taken after I had ridden for several miles over dirt and gravel roads where one route suddenly had closed for construction, but I had decided to continue riding on through. The bike and wheels performed admirably, regardless of the numerous potholes I'd encountered. As I do with most wheels which I receive in used condition, I had gradually de-tensioned the spokes all around the rims and then essentially re-built the wheels, carefully tensioning all the spokes. Had any of the spoke nipples been damaged or rounded, this would have also been a perfect opportunity to replace them as needed. It is also a good time to examine the spoke holes of a rim, clean away any rust, corrosion or grit which may have accumulated, and perhaps even add a tiny bit of lubricant where the heads of the nipples would contact the eyelets. I know this must all sound excessive, but a few minutes spent on preliminary preparation really makes tensioning a wheel much easier in the end. I'm sure we have all heard the painful squeaking sound produced when some old spokes are tightened. That "friction-complaint" is something I always like to avoid, and this is easy to do at an early stage of a re-build. When the newly re-tensioned wheel is once again completed, I feel I can trust it for many thousands of miles. Pacific Exploit Women's Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels) Sporty enough for spelunking through the city, the 18-speed Pacific Exploit women’s mountain bike also offers a hard edge to take on bumpy country trails. The Exploit is equipped with a lightweight, hand-built, high-tensile steel tube frame and a Vortex front cross-country suspension fork that delivers a smooth ride over rough terrain as well as improved control. The 18-speed twist shifters, meanwhile, let you efficiently change gears wherever you ride. Other details include linear pull brakes, a three-piece crank set, an MTB riser handlebar and stem, a sport saddle, and 36-spoke silver rims with MTB hubs. (14) Kessels Roadbike - early 70's This Bike came from my father-in-law who bought it around the early 1980s from a local amateur racing driver near Frankfurt/Germany. Apparently he used the Bike only a few times, and I think the state in which I received it is more or less the same he got it. No decals are left. Actually he didn't knew who the manufacturer was, he thought it was italian and startet with an »M«. So I had to dive into the then unknown world of classic racing bicycles. I started my research by looking for italian Brands with »M«. I found »classicrendezvous« and it was fascinating. But no Masi, no Motta, nor Molnago, Mios and no other of the shown machines was similar to the the one I got. I found more sites in the WWW and finally on »speedbicycles.ch« there was one (and now are two) very similar. In fact–apart from size, colour and several components–the frame is exactly what is shown on speedbicycles (most obviously the connection of the seat stays to seat tube, the two circular holes underneath the bottom bracket, no frame number ...). The state shown here is pretty much the same that I found. After about 25 years in a (dry) cellar new tires were needed, I bought a NOS handlebar (3TTT as before) and ribbon, a new chain and a cheap shimano freewheel. The components in detail: frame 60 cm (center to top), toptube 57 cm (c-c), Sugino crank, Campagnolo headset and bottom bracket, Campagnolo seat post (27,2 mm), brakes and shift levers, Mafac brake levers. The wheels were Mavic »Championnat du Monde« rims with Normandy hub (front) and a Zeus hub (rear), Dura Ace front derailleur (FD 7210), RD 6200 EX »Arabesque« rear derailleur. The shown Brooks B-17 was replaced by a new Swallow. The all-in-all state is medium. Countless small defects in paint work are to consider, in several places the color is repainted–most notably on the head set's lower part. Since the spokes were not the best anymore and the rims too are heavily used, I bought a wheel set that is slightly to new (Mid to late 80's) but look for avery good one for tubulars. Apart from optical faults and not contemporary parts the Kessels is great fun to drive. Unfortunately my father-in-law couldn't report anything from the bike's history. One might assume, that most of the none-Campa parts were later replacements after the bike was not used for racing anymore but for training purposes. But that remains speculation. How to Build a West Coast Chopper Kit Bike (Motorbooks Workshop) This book presents a step-by-step guide to building a West Coast Chopper's C.F.L. kit. Kit choppers are hot commodities. While few people can afford to buy a custom-built chopper from one of the high-end builders like Jesse James-bikes that often sell for $100,000 or more-many can afford to buy such bikes in kit form. Because of this, all the high-end builders sell their creations in kit form. For example, while Jesse James might build perhaps a dozen custom bikes per year, he sells hundreds of chopper kits. The same is true of any number of other builders like Matt Hotch, Cyril Huze, and Paul Yaffe. Authored by Mike Seate and featuring the photography of Joe Appel, this book is a step-by-step how-to guide for anyone building a kit chopper. (6) Wheel building tutorial: Final steps After - and only after - checking your work against some other wheels to make sure they look right, and that the front and back wheel look the same; you can start the tensioning & truing process. I do this in a totally ghetto manner that I wouldn't suggest doing unless you've done it a bunch which I assume you haven't if you're still reading this. My first step is to tighten all the nipples down until I can only see one or two threads (this may differ due to spoke length of course). At this point the wheel should tighten up considerably and take shape. I then basically go around and tension them all by a certain number of twists, making sure to alternate sides so I don't force the wheel prematurely out of true. On this build I decided to try the aural tensioning process made famous in The Triplets of Belleville where our hero uses a tuning fork to get spoke tension correct. This is actually something you can do with a fair amount of success if you pay attention. I found a chart on the internets that basically showed you what note your chosen spoke length should give at tension. Mine happened to be A#. I then used a java based tone generator in leu of a tuning fork because - wouldn't you just know i - I don't have an A# tuning fork in my tool kit. After tensioning them as close as I felt was important I moved on to ghetto truing technique #2 - truing wheels on a fork. I put my roomates broken aluminum pista concept on the bike stand upside down, made sure the hub was entirely flat into the dropouts, then began emulating the pins on a real truing stand with my thumb. This actually works really well if you understand what it is you're doing and have the patience. I would suggest reading up on truing techniques because it can be frustrating to learn. If you can't hang with thumb alone, a piece of tape with a small piece of cardstock or something thick can be taped to each side of the fork and moved while you spin the wheel. FASTEST POCKET BIKE EVER : BIKE EVER
Fastest Pocket Bike Ever : Recumbent Exercise Bike Comparison : Body Champ Recumbent Bike Fastest Pocket Bike Ever
IMG00044-20110705-1525 So for this trip I took my BB 9550, the Nikon N80 and D70 with the Tamron 28-300VC and the Tokina 19-35. I had just sold the Nikon Coolpix S9100 which really would have been nice up here, but I thought it best to sell it while the iron was hot, so to speak, and I got almost what I paid for it on eBay. I also sold the VC lens and got taken to the cleaners, even on a 5-day auction with a free Promaster multicoated UV lens thrown in. That lens is nice but just too much weight for a day lens, really, so I'm going to stick with the non-VC lens on my 500si and see about the A850. I absolutely LOVED shooting the Tokina 19-35 on the 35mm N80, up there. It was just *great* to walk right up to the edge of the road and take shots that were pretty-much what I was seeing. Much better than struggling with the 28-300 especially on a subframe. The one problem is that I had an old roll of ISO1600 film in the N80 so those shots should come out "interesting" to say the least...but I'm sure that I will go through here a few more times LOL and definitely the Blue Ridge Parkway is worth another drive. It's a faster, more wide-open version of Skyline Drive, like driving through Rock Creek Park in downtown DC, if it were high in the Adirondacks, Appalachians or whatever...though many of the overlooks are grown-over with tree-cover so you can hardly see anything at all...but a lot of them are very nice. Plus it's free. And really all the Skyline Drive is much the same, it's like someone took a stencil drawings of some curves and straights and laid them at random end to end over 180 miles. After about 60 miles the road is completely repetitive. Still a good warmup for the Blue Ridge Parkway which is somewhat faster and much more dangerous to ride at real speed. At least on a bike. ...Rt 56 coming west down off the BRP was just ridiculous. If the Dragon and/or Mulholland are supposed to be tough...you ain't seen nothing yet. Anyway the one problem I had was that I could hardly get the straps adjusted on the SLRs so that I wouldn't bang the lenses against the tank while I had the camera around my neck while riding, and it was a true pain in the ass to stop and pull them out of the bag, take shots then stow them and get back on the bike to ride. I ended up using the Blackberry most of the time and trusting that the fixed exposure would be adequate. Clearly it limits the utility of the camera in the phone but still obviously I got a lot of decent shots out of it. Plenty good for Flickr and combined with WiFi I'm sold on the whole WiFi cameraphone thing. Yet to get the GPS & Google Maps to work on it, and not quite sold on the small display, it could be an inch wider clearly. At least the width of the BB8200. But the overall functionality is easily worth the $175 I paid for it which is what I paid for my V3i. A major technological advance and it can't even use iPod or Android apps. So yes I did take some film & DSLR shots anyway, but I found that I used the BB9550 for quick & dirty shots of scenes that weren't all that great but still interesting enough to shoot but not so much to make me want to pull my gear off and out and put it all back on and away, and I left the SLRs in the bag for the times when I felt like pulling off my helmnt and taking a break. The BB9550 goes in a side pocket on my jeans so I don't have to worry about it swinging on a cord and banging into anything but I can get it out of my pocket, set it up and shoot it & stow it without taking off my riding-gloves, and it still takes decent shots most of the time, and that's just huge. The S9100 is slightly more difficult to shoot out of a side-pouch, the big advantage is the ability to adjust the exposure combined with the 25-420mm effective lens. The big minus is the price, a somewhat-lesser minus is the fact that all it can do is take pictures. But except for HDR scenes and except when I need a 12MP image vs a 3MP image (which is, really, never since I never print) and except when I need zoom (which is rare) the BB9550 is just as effective. So if I had the BB9550, the S9100 and a good DSLR and lens, and I'm on my bike, I would shoot from the cellphone through the S9100 to the DSLR...especially considering the issue of changing lenses on the DSLR, not to mention unpacking & packing it. If I"m walking around and free to sling a camera on my neck, I'd shoot the other way, probably starting with the 19-35 on a film-camera and saving the DSLR & 28-300 for very special shots. If I have *any* trouble slinging a camera then even the S9100 is too much to work with. And of course I couldn't shoot raw with it, and I did look into this and it's going to be quite a bit of work to get raw out of it if I ever can. So it just fell into a middle-ground. Good but not great, easy to use but not the easiest...and short of the 28-300VC, the most expensive piece of camera gear that I had, Neither one of them were really giving me my moneys' wort I need to be able to track my weak efforts of riding.. but nothing I own that is suitable for riding has pockets... I don't want to use the basket if I am just going for a ride and have no need to carry anything and lets face it, I tried riding with my phone in my hand; my coordination just isn't going to meet the standards for that trick. I have ordered a mount from ebay, but that is coming from hong kong and when I only paid $3 for it, I'm not expecting anything too flash! So today while cleaning I came across my arm band when I went through my 'I AM GOING TO RUN EVERYWHERE AND GET FIT' stage and had the BEST idea ever. Put my iPhone in, was a tight squeeze (twss) and wrapped it and secured it around the mount for the basket and HEY! I can now view how super fast I am going (not really, cause it doesnt update) but I can read SMS's without riding into the bush like last time (to be fair, it was mostly the action of getting my phone out of my pocket and attempting to turn a corner which I fail at already). PS. because it is super duper important, I named my bike Betelgeuse... BEST name ever. On the way we visited a mini 7up Museum, Learned that the big rotating Franz bread was put on the roof in 1956, and stopped at Benson Bubbler in front of Benson Tech High - whichg was actually one of two Benson Bubblers made at the H.S. in the 1970s! Oh did we savor the flavor of Greek Food and we even got some greek mustaches from our dessert. We lost a few after this stop, but many stayed on for a visit to the Big Milk, we visited the Oregon State symbols in the LLoyd - no one guessed that Milk is Oregon's State drink, a stop in to Anzen - a 100 year old Japanese All-in-one store across from the Convention Center. We also got a mini tour of Dan & Louis Oyster Bar, and then biked along the waterfront and saw larger grain ships filling up with grain and old mills. Our last stop was a Brewery tour at Bridgport. Post tour, per Patrick's suggestion we had some Cask Conditioned IPA Beer. Wow - super yummy. As we left, the rain was back, and I a little tipsy, and a very nice museum tour for the museum lady. Lots of new people this tour which was fun! Hanging out in Front of a Bicycle Store Slow day at the bike store so the owner sits in front reading a book. Only $25 for a mini tune up or $45 for the clean and lube, what a deal. Here I paused along the Washington Ave. bridge over the Mississippi River for a brief rest and a photo. It took me about 2 hours to go roughly 6 miles - walking/pushing and biking when able. I had a great time doing it - looking forward to the next opportunity. 25 Feb 2007 The Build: Surly Cross-Check (54cm), Brooks B-17 Saddle, seatpost off my 1988 Trek 360, Nitto Noodle Handlebars weave-wrapped with cotton tape and shellacked, Specialized stem I picked up for 8 bucks, Planet Bike Fenders, Ortlieb Pannier, Tubus Cargo Rack, Schmidt Dynohub with E6 headlight, Ultegra drivetrain, kickstand I picked up in Germany for about 10 Euros, NOKIAN Studded tires, Open Pro rims, B&M spoke reflectors, Feine Raeder water bottle, egg beater pedals - it kicks your bikes ass. Pimp: The Story of My Life As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Slim’s life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. Only he could tell this story and make the reader feel it. If you thought Hustle & Flow was the true pimp story, this book is where it all began. This is the heyday of the pimp, the hard-won pride and glory, small though it may be; the beginnings of pimp before it was dragged in front of the camera, before pimp juice and pimp style. A trip through hell by one man who lived to tell the tale. The dangers of jail, addiction and death that are still all too familiar for today’s black community. Though it is a tale of his times, it will remain current and true for as long as there is a race bias, as long as there is a street life, as long as there is exploitation. On my last day in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, I met a flatlander!! His name was Tanh Ga and he was riding at a pretty roughed up spot. It was quite fortunate as he said there was only 5 flatlanders in the entire city and that bmx bikes are more expensive that the infinite scooters running throughout vietnam. Just to give you an idea, a scooter is bout 40 million dong and a bmx bike is around 60 million dong... There's 'Bob' guarding the bikes. On this last Father's Day (yes, the SLPR'er is a dad!) - after the mornings festivities - our friend Bob and I decided to go for a long motorcycle ride around southern Illinois. Here we are, taking a break on 'Bluff Road,' near Valmeyer, Illinois. As I was told by Bob, these aren't 'natural' caves, but instead are carved into that limestone hillside by a rock and stone company, that takes it's trucks and digging equipment underground into those openings to mine the rock. It was such a pleasant surprise - we passed several of these openings before we decided to stop at this one for a quick break - and as we rolled passed them - there was like this blast of really soothing cool air emanating from each of them like a giant AC blast that had to be like 50 degrees cool! - very nice on such a hot muggy day - where I think the temps were around 96 degrees and the heat index was over 100 degrees. I thought we were going for about a 60 mile, 2 hour ride - but instead - it turned out to be a 6 hour, 200 mile jaunt all over southern Illinois!
