An Arts and Crafts Style Villa - Moonee Ponds

An Arts and Crafts Style Villa - Moonee Ponds

Hiding amid an artistically overgrown garden of well established fir trees and various species of connifers, this large Arts and Crafts villa may be found in the Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds.

Built between Federation (1901) and the Great War (1914), the shingled decoration on the outstanding upper gable is very Arts and Crafts inspired as are the horizontal stripes that make up the stripped back decoration on the rough cast stuccoed piers of the verandah. Interestingly, this villa features a decorative awning over the upper floor window made of pressed metal in a "fish scale" pattern, which was made very popular by the worldwide craze for all things Japanese in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries.

Moonee Ponds, like its neighbouring boroughs of Ascot Vale and Essendon, was etablished in the late 1880s and early 1890s. However, unlike its neighbours, it was an area of affluence and therefore only had middle-class, upper middle-class and some very wealthy citizens. Well proportioned villas like these would have suited a large affluent Edwardian family, and would have required a small retinue of servants to maintain.

An Arts and Crafts Style Villa - Essendon

An Arts and Crafts Style Villa - Essendon

This smart Reformist (Arts and Crafts) style villa may be found in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon.

Built between Federation (1901) and the Great War (1914), the shingled barge boards beneath the gable, the rough cast stuccoed brick upper dado, and the square window awnings over bay window are very Arts and Crafts inspired, as is the choice of red brick to build the villa with.

Arts and Crafts houses challenged the formality of the mid and high Victorian styles that preceded it, and were often designed with uniquely angular floor plans. This is a fine example with the entrance at the side of the house, rather than at the front as Victorian homes had.

Essendon was etablished in the 1860s and became an area of affluence and therefore only had middle-class, upper middle-class and some very wealthy citizens. A large villa like this built in one of the finer pockets of the suburb sests that it was built for an aspiring upper middle-class family of some means. A villa like this would have required the employment of a retinue of staff to keep it well maintained.
