Logan's camping adventure Here's the story behind this innocent looking limb: We all went to sleep to stars and clear skies at our lovely campsite under the cottonwood trees by a stream. The weather report had said possible rain and lows in the high 30s, but that was to be the worst of it. It was Memorial Day weekend for gosh sake, how bad can the weather get? But while we were sleeping, it snowed about 4 inches. Brian got up about 7 a.m., set up extra shelter, made coffee, etc., and commented about all the "widowmakers" over our heads. He handed me some coffee in the tent and took Logan out of the tent. About two minutes later, I heard Brian say, "Logan walk to me. Come to Daddy." Then 5 seconds after that, CRASH! The limb fell right where Logan had been standing. Brian had heard the cracking noise above. I'm glad it was Brian next to Logan, because I just don't think I would have realized what was going on in time. The limb crushed a portable table, ripped the shade tent and tore some chrome off the 4-runner wheel area, but luckily that was it. Needless to say, we all stood out in the snow in a clearing for a minute saying "Wow." Then we all dragged and drove our stuff to open space while branches dropped every few minutes. Then, about two hours later, the snow stopped and all the snow started melting and all was good again. A rancher about a mile away said he'd never seen anything like that. With leaves on the trees when it snowed, branches were down everywhere, like a tornado had gone through. Luckily, Logan just doesn't even realize what happened and if you ask him if he likes camping, he still says, "Uh huh!" ShelterBox - Floods - Brazil - June/July 2010 A young baby is given some comfort in the shade of a ShelterBox tent. Her family lost their home in the recent flooding in Pernambuco. ShelterBox is responding to floods that hit the Brazilian North East states of Pernambuco and Alagoas leaving over 100,000 homeless. The floods, caused by heavy rain fall, have been an annual event, but this year's are on a scale not seen before. [water]mark: a monument to monuments There exists a need for choreography of multiple pieces when working on a city-wide scale, particularly when these pieces are of monumental stature. Although highly regulated & rationalized in its layout, the National Mall and its surrounding area only references itself, and does little to embrace the surrounding areas. The Potomac only seems to intensify the division between the Mall and its nearby neighbor, the Commonwealth of Virginia. With the implementation of a water taxi system, the bridge is both literally and figuratively closed. The system reduces use of the Arlington Memorial Bridge as well as quickly and efficiently connecting the East and West banks of the Potomac, wherein, more methods of light transit are available [bikes, buses, walking paths]. Gone are the notions of a land bound “landmarks”. The terminal departs the bank in a overt gesture towards the area all around it and the people who inhabit it. It establishes its datum with the opposing bank and juts outwards towards oncoming taxis. Rather than merely arriving, you are welcomed, by the gates of the lock which serve as an entry threshold, as well as system for establishing tidal balance. Upon your arrival in the lock, the taxi is raised to its appropriate height by the water of the river and that stored below in the water tower, and pulls up to the loading dock at building level. After you first step off of the boat and on to the deck, you are provided a framed partial view of the Washington Monument in the distance, constructed by the ascending ramp below that stretches & contracts throughout the length of the building. The decking that extends from the bank forms a canopy for exterior shelter and welcomes visitors into the cafe. When in the cafe, the visitor is flanked by two 1’ x 1’ windows on their right and left, each obliquely framing a snapshot of the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials. Continuing up the ramp, one now enters the information kiosk, a long wooden frame tube that provides information about the attractions around, illuminated by the light that pours in from above. Departing from the closed in portion of the terminal, the visitor is now out among the historic landscape and ready to bus, bike or walk to their chosen destination. Arriving back to the terminal, one is able to sit and watch, relax or nap on the north or south deck, as well as ascend upwards on top of the cafe to get a panoramic view of their surroundings and wait for their departing taxi. Metal Goth As the second generation of neo-goths (modern goths) came to a close towards the mid 90's, they began to explore heavy metal. The result from the pioneers worthy of the label such as Paradise Lost, Type O Negative and My Dying Bride brought out Gothic Metal. Bands that came under this label were Rasputina, Tristiana, Anathema, The Gathering, The 69 Eyes and Moonspell. The earlier goths became known as Elder Goths who saw the metal gothic generation illigitimate, more modern made. Metal goths, Mall-Goths and Cyber Goths were considered as Novice Goths, in other words those who weren't there when it was new and fresh but create their own definition of goth. Metal goths have a huge taste for gothic metal and listen to some gothic rock bands but also have extreme tastes for heavy metal. Their aesthetic tastes lie between heavy metal and neo-gothic culture, they wear leather jackets, boots, black jeans or leather jeans, a horror t-shirt, black nails, eyeliner and hair that lies to the sides (apparently influenced by Ozzy Osbourne). The female goths dress in leather or snake skin mini skirts, a leather top, long leather fingerless gloves, boots, black hair or crimson red that drapes over one eye sometimes, black eyeliner, black lipstick and black nails. Metal goths are the only type of gothi known for wearing all black! Apparently the hipster goths copied the metal goths but also adopted black metal lifestyle, the novice goths and elder goths consider them fledglings, not at all true to gothic lifestyle. Gothic metal is currently hugely popular in Europe. Drape Stand Base This is the base of a pair of freestanding drape stands. Each stand only has three legs, as the four leg is replaced by the crossbar between the two stands that the drape hangs over. Bolts are welded to the shorter leg and and held to the upright and the other leg with wing nuts. The vertical post is aluminium. View from window, George Washington House, Barbados George Washington House, at Bush Hill on the Garrison Savannah, Bridgetown, Barbados, is one of the earliest surviving houses on the island and was built around 1720. George Washington stayed here with his invalid brother Lawrence in 1751 on his only visit outside the continental USA. He contracted smallpox whilst in Barbados, and survived and the immunity this gave him was invaluable when the Continental Army was stricken with the disease during the Revolutionary War. George Washington House is now a house museum restored to reflect the eighteenth-century ambience that would have existed during Washington's stay there. It also houses exhibitions on the visit by the Washington brothers, the system of plantation slavery that they encountered in Barbados, and the connections between Barbados and the United States. This photo shows a traditional Barbadian dripstone water filter outside the house, and the characteristic hooded windows with plantation shutters of Caribbean Georgian architecture. George Washington House is part of the ensemble of buildings that constitute Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List of natural and cultural sites of outstanding universal significance in June 2011. This chattel house is part of a village preserved at Tyrol Cot, the former home of Sir Grantley Adams, first premier of Barbados, and his wife Lady Grace Adams. Their son Tom Adams was later prime minister of Barbados. Behind the chattel house to the right can be seen the thatched roof and stone walls of a former hut from the era of slavery in Barbados that ended in 1838. Tyrol Cot is a National Trust of Barbados property. Today they trash talked Texas Tech and their "Panhandle" cheerleaders (Texas Tech's home is in the Panhandle section of the state of Texas). They called them fake Texans....since Lubbock is not too far from the New Mexico border. A sea of burnt orange at Darrell K Royal Stadium..with a small section of red for the Texas Tech faithful There were a few Texas Tech fans mixed in with the huge sea of burnt orange of the Texas Longhorns fans, but most were confined to the away team's section on their side of the field and near the end zone. Most of the fans from Tech came from the Lubbock area, which was 10 hours away from here in Austin. 4:45 #22 Spurs 2. Burnley 3. (agg: 6-4) Oh my gawd! This shot could of been so different. With 4 minutes to go, my world had been turned upside down! Now i hear you ll cry, its just a game of football. But as all my 4:45 followers will know by now, its more than a game. Its the undercurrent of my very being, my soul and life force!! ha ha We went in to this game 4-1 up on aggregte. Safe? Not on your nelly! Ive been feeling pretty confident ever sice the first leg, but it wasnt until i sat down in robs front room to watch the game, that i had this feeling in my stomach that we were gonn be upset! And how right i was. Ok, we were missing some key players, minly gomes and lennon. For some reason, Harry decided to put a 9 year old blind kid with no arms in goal. Strange desicion youd think nd how right! He was totally off his mark for the first goal, which to be fair was a stunning free kick from robbie blake. He couldnt do too much about the 2nd goal. But dropping a cross right at the feet at the oncoming striker for the 3rd was a shootable offence. in fact im making enquires first thing tomorrow morning to see if they have an empty cell at guantanamo bay! SO, with 4 mintues of extra time left, i was fasioning a home-made noose and climbing up the step ladder when all of a sudden out of the blue, benny got forward and crossed low for Pav to cain it home from close range!! 3-1 on the night, but more importantly 5-4 on aggregate! and with two minutes and the way the game had gone i fully expected burnly to nick another to take it to penaltys. Luckily Jezza had different ideas and with seconds left burried a great strike to make it 3-2 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate. I must say i tottally flattering score line. We didnt deserve to go through. Its probably the worst game of football i have ever seen the spurs play and feel humbled by burnley and my heart goes out to every single burnley fan tonight. BUT WEMBLEY, WEMBLEY WERE THE MIGHTY TOTTENHAM AND WERE OFF TO WEMBLEY!!!!! C.O.Y.S!!!! Rear right wing of c.1720: front facing Hensington Road of 2-storey-and-attic, 2-window range: has brick end stack, and 6-pane sashes set in moulded stone architraves with ground-floor cornices; C18 hipped roof dormers with moulded cornices; late C19 outshut to left. Rear left range, housing stairs, altered in early C19 and has hipped roof. One of two houses in Woodstock which are early C18 and copy the Baroque architecture of Blenheim Palace (q.v.). Miles Parker, maltster, was a Woodstock Councillor by 1694 and mayor in 1711 and 1715. From 1707-11 he was Receiver General of Taxes in Oxon, and as such was deeply involved in the supply of cash to build Blenheim Palace.
