V.A. - Knights Of The Blues Table (1997)

Knights of the Blues Table (1997) was "Dedicated to Cyril Davies". Featuring a number of memorable moments, like the home recording of KC Moan by Cyril in 1954(!), the most satisfying track is 'Send For Me'. Written by Cyril, the song was performed by Cyril's Blues Inc. alumnus, Jack Bruce and the wonderful British guitarist, Clem Clempson. What was unclear to us though was how Jack and Clem had learned the number. Had they got it from an unreleased demo of Cyril or was it something Jack remembered from his Blues Inc. days? We contacted Clem in July 2009 about his memories of the song: His first response was that he had never heard a recording of this song by Cyril. He had just assumed it was something Jack remembered from working with him. He emailed Jack but Jack doesn't know of any recording of this by Cyril Davies. He can't remember why he knows the song, but assumes it's because they played it together in Blues Inc. days. - cyrildavies.com

MITCH LADDIE - Burning Bridges (2012)

'Burning Bridges' is an aptly titled second album from the young rock-blues guitarist Mitch Laddie. He's broken with his past and taken gigantic steps in developing his own style on a confident album that bristles with deep tones, steely riffs and intense playing. He's equally at home playing rock, blues and fusion and 'Burning Bridges' has all three styles in abundance on a self produced, coherent album on which nothing is laboured or overplayed and the power of sestion reigns supreme. Sure he sometimes likes rock out with a dirt sounding tone and lean into to some heavy riff driven grooves full of spiralling solos on road tested nets. But in is role as a producer he's taken the songs a step further by polishing them in the studio without losing the inherent fire and spontaneous band interplay. The result is his most assured work so far.

01. Time Is Running Away 02. Paper In Your Pocket 03. Take A Bite 04. Would You? 05. What Are You Living For? 06. Changing Tides & Burning Bridges 07. Gone 08. Gettin' It Right 09. Inner City Blues 10. Give You The World 11. Mr.Johnson Revisited

Melvin Taylor is a world renowned Jazz and Blues guitarist who has been at the top of the charts in Europe for years. His first two CD's, "I'll Play The Blues For You", and "Blues On The Run", were recorded in France in the early 1980's. JJ CALE featuring LEON RUSSELL - In Session at the Paradise Studios, L.A. 1979 (2003)

If you like the music of J.J. Cale and you enjoy Leon Russell's unique take on any music he plays, you'll really take to this effort. It basically is like sitting in on a final practice for a studio recording. The band is arrayed in a small circle in Leon Russell's Paradise Studios. Lots of closeups, no crowd noise, pristine clear sound quality... very defined and nuanced... nice. Mr. Russell mostly plays a Hammond B-3 and if you've ever listened to most of J.J. Cale's catalog, you'll know that this instrument is right at home in the instrument mix he chooses for his songs. It adds a distinctly Bluesy element to the sound signature whenever Leon stretches a little bit on a solo.

This rare session, with Leon Russell on Keyboards was recorded at The Paradise Studios, Los Angeles in 1979. The master recordings were never released and laid gathering dust, when they were discovered in Leon Russell's farmhouse studio in Nashville. In the summer of 2002 the original analogue multi-tracks were restored, digitally remastered and re-mixed with J.J. Cale at the Karma Studios, San Pedro, California. - amazon.com

THE GEORGIA SATELLITES - Let It Rock: The Best Of Georgia Satellites (1993)

The Georgia Satellites are a Southern rock band from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. They are best known for their 1986 top five hit single "Keep Your Hands to Yourself", and draw inspiration from Chuck Berry, Little Feat, and AC/DC, among others. From their bar band roots to their chart-crashing megahits to their current tour of sold-out shows, The Georgia Satellites have kept the world moving to sweet, gritty, three-chord rock n roll. Founded in 1985 by Rick Richards, Rick Price, singer Dan Baird and drummer Mauro Magellan, the Satellites quickly launched into stardom on the back of rockers like Keep Your Hands to Yourself, Battleship Chains, Hippy Hippy Shake and others.  Critically acclaimed albums and mind-bending performances earned the boys a permanent spot in music history. After a brief sabbatical following the departure of Baird, The Georgia Satellites returned with a vengeance in 1993.  Led by Price and Richards and joined by drummer Todd Johnston, they have packed houses around the world with their blistering brand of Southern rock.

The touring band included Bobby Keys, Chuck Leavell, Lisa Fischer, Cindy Mizelle, Bernard Fowler, Matt Clifford and the Uptown Horns. The Steel Wheels/ Urban Jungle tour became the highest grossing tour of all time. But it’s not just the figures that set this show apart from others, the Rolling Stones revisited songs from their psychedelic period such as “2000 Light Years From Home” and “Ruby Tuesday”, with cosmic results. THE BYRDS - The Original Singles A's & B's 1965-1971 (2012)

The Byrds were an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964. The band underwent multiple line-up changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn (aka Jim McGuinn) remaining the sole consistent member until the group disbanded in 1973. Although they only managed to attain the huge commercial success of contemporaries like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Rolling Stones for a short period of time (1965–66), The Byrds are today considered by critics to be one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. Initially, they pioneered the musical genre of folk rock, melding the influence of The Beatles and other British Invasion bands with contemporary and traditional folk music. As the 1960s progressed, the band was also influential in originating psychedelic rock, raga rock, and country rock. In addition, the band's signature blend of clear harmony singing and McGuinn's jangly twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar has continued to be influential on popular music up to the present day. Among the band's most enduring songs are their cover versions of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" and Pete Seeger's "Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There is a Season)", along with the self-penned originals, "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better", "Eight Miles High", "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star", "Ballad of Easy Rider" and "Chestnut Mare".

Single collection release from The Byrds including all the single tracks (both A & B side), their alternative versions, and unreleased tracks.

WAYLON JENNINGS - Nashville Rebel [4 CDs Box Set] (2006)

It may be hard to believe, but it's true: Legacy's four-disc 2006 box Nashville Rebel is the first comprehensive, multi-label Waylon Jennings retrospective ever assembled. During the peak of the CD box set reissue boom of the late '80s/early '90s, Waylon did receive a quasi-box in the form of 1993's Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line: The RCA Years, an excellent double-disc set that was housed in a box yet fell short of being a true box set. Starting in the late '90s, his catalog began to be overhauled -- Buddha reissued classic individual albums like Honky Tonk Heroes, Bear Family put out two huge box sets that chronicled all of his RCA work up until 1973, then the rest of his '70s work came out as two-fers overseas, while Hip-O assembled a collection of both his earliest recordings and his '80s work for MCA -- but he still lacked a set that covered his whole career, from 1958 through 1995. That's exactly what Nashville Rebel does, and it does so in superb fashion. Any career with as much great work as Waylon's is inevitably hard to condense, even at the length of a four-disc set with 92 tracks, but Nashville Rebel does the job right, providing an accurate, compelling narrative of Jennings' career, while offering all of his biggest hits along with sharply chosen lesser-known songs and rarities that help complete the picture. Any hardcore fan might find favorite songs missing, but nobody can complain about what's here -- and that applies not only to the first three discs, which trace the prime of Waylon's career, but even the fourth, which is the rare final CD on a multi-disc set that is solid, perhaps not as gripping or timeless as the music that precedes it, but it does present a convincing case that Waylon continued to make strong music right up until the later stages of his career. And this is how Nashville Rebel is like those classic box sets of the late '80s and early '90s: there is no fluff, no needlessly chosen rarities; it simply and cleanly gives the listener the essential items from a truly great artist. There is plenty of other great music within Waylon's catalog, but if this is all somebody heard from him, they would know exactly who he was and what he meant musically. That's the goal of all lavish box sets such as this, and this is one of the few that truly achieves that goal. It's an essential item, not just for country fans, but for anybody who cares about American music of the 20th century. - allmusic.com

CASSANDRA WILSON - Another Country (2012)

With her Nina Simone-like low register and supple phrasing, charismatic Grammy-winning vocalist Cassandra Wilson could endlessly recycle her successful acoustic folk-blues repertoire. But with 2010's Silver Pony, and this similarly eclectic set made with the Italian guitarist and producer Fabrizio Sotti, she has revealed an eagerness to spread her wings. Sotti, a fine jazz guitarist with an occasional Django Reinhardt ring, has almost as much of the spotlight – and the light touch and subtle shading of this session, recorded in Florence, are also down to a French/Italian/Nigerian lineup featuring two percussionists (Mino Cinelu and Lekan Babalola), accordion and bass. Wilson sounds as unflinchingly red as of old on Red Guitar, and likewise on the traditional-sounding No More Blues. Her love affair with Florence somewhat unwisely led to the inclusion of O Sole Mio (sung in eerily inflected Italian), and the samba whispers of Almost Twelve don't entirely suit her, either. But the atmosphere of discovery, uncertainty and anticipation on the musing, low-pitched original Passion (a standout track) balances Wilson's unique vocal strengths, Sotti's elegant improvising and the band's soft glow. Her gliding variations over a chamber choir and accordion on the swaying Olomuroro aren't far behind. - guardian.co.uk

JOSS STONE - The Soul Sessions (2003 / 2012)

The Soul Sessions
is the debut album by English recording artist Joss Stone. It was released in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2003 by Relentless Records. The album consists of a collection of cover versions of '60s and '70s soul songs, in addition to a cover of a contemporary song, re-arranged into a soul song.
TRACKS: 01. The Chokin' Kind 02. Super Duper Love - (Are You Diggin On Me?) - Part 1 03. Fell In Love With A Boy 04. Victim Of A Foolish Heart 05. Dirty Man 06. Some Kind Of Wonderful 07. I've Fallen In Love With You 08. I Had A Dream 09. All The King's Horses 10. For The Love Of You - Parts 1 & 2

The Soul Sessions Vol.2 is the sixth studio album of Grammy and Brit award winning English singer songwriter Joss Stone scheduled for release on 23 July 2012. Stone's sixth album is a counterpart to her first – 2003's multi-platinum debut of 60s and 70s covers on which the then 16-year-old sagely aligned herself with old-timer luminaries such as Betty Wright and Benny Latimore. This time, round Muscle Shoals cred comes from Clayton Ivey and it's the 70s and 80s that have been mined. Less predictable is a bombastic cover of Broken Bells' leisurely hit The High Road and though her mighty voice is technically irreproachable throughout, every track is attacked with all the timidity of a tsunami – enough to prompt the peevish complaint that force and feeling are not the same thing. A "revisitation" of the idea which launched Stone into the crossover jetstream: ballsy, mannered reconstructions of what the word "soul" might once have stood for. Here she is doing it again with top-notch players in Nashville, including Delbert McClinton and Ernie Isley. It's high-class karaoke, covering the Chi-Lites, Dorothy Moore, The Dells, Womack & Womack. Girl's got taste. And, as ever, she convinces most at the blowtorch end of her range.
TRACKS:
01. I Got The... 02. (For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People 03. While You're Out Looking For Sugar 04. Sideway Shuffle 05. I Don't Want To Be With Nobody But You 06. Teardrops 07. Stoned Out Of My Mind 08. The Love We Had (Stays On My Mind) 09. The High Road 10. Pillow Talk 11. Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye 12. First Taste Of Hurt 13. One Love In My Lifetime 14. Nothing Takes The Place Of You 15. (1-2-3-4-5-6-7) Count The Days

KIM MITCHELL - Greatest Hits (1995)

Canadian rock vocalist/guitarist Kim Mitchell is arguably best known in his own country, both as a member of Max Webster and a solo artist. Released in 1995, Greatest Hits collects 17 tracks in a variety of permutations -- hits, live recordings, new recordings of older songs, brand-new songs, and one Max Webster cut. The gifted Mitchell's best-known song, the undeniably catchy singalong rocker "Go for Soda," dented the lower reaches of the U.S. singles chart in 1984. It's featured on Greatest Hits, of course, as are two very short, live, alternately titled snippets of the song -- for no apparent reason. Rush fanatics are bound to appreciate this collection since it includes the dramatically jagged Max Webster song "Battle Scar" (from 1980's Universal Juveniles), on which Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart all perform. The other songs best capturing Mitchell's clever songwriting and melodic guitar work are "Rock N Roll Duty," "That's the Hold," "Rocklandwonderland," "Easy to Tame," the live "All We Are," the new version of "Patio Lanterns," and "World's Such a Wonder."

TRACKS:
01. Transcendental Soda 02. Rock N' Roll Duty 03. That's The Hold 04. Go For Soda 05. No More Walking Away 06. Lager & Ale 07. Rocklandwonderland 08. Easy To Tame 09. Rainbow 10. All We Are 11. Patio Lanterns 12. Acrimony 13. World's Such A Wonder 14. Expedition Sailor 15. Battle Scar 16. I Am A Wild Party 17. Hare Soda

BABE RUTH - Grand Slam: The Best Of Babe Ruth (1994)

Grand Slam is a worthwhile compilation made up of tracks from Babe Ruth's first three albums, which represent the band's best material. All the tunes on this hits package showcase Babe Ruth's energetic, hard-rockin' progressive style, with a dynamic tinge of free-flowing jazz fusion that evolves from Steve Gregory's tenor sax and flute playing. The set takes seven tracks from 1974's Amar Caballero album, five from their debut, and four from 1975's self-titled album, spotlighting Janita Hahn's burly but emphatic vocals. Even though Alan Shacklock's Mellotron and Hammond organ give the music a certain progressive flair, it's actually the commingling of the guitars and percussion work that gives the bulk of the songs their edginess and rock depth. Cuts such as "The Mexican," "Doctor Love," and "Broken Cloud" are some of the band's sharpest, while the flitting and wavering of the trumpet, flügelhorn, and even the violin add some appreciated brilliance to some of the heavier pieces. The tracks from the Babe Ruth album, especially "Jack O'Lantern" and "Fistful of Dollars," show a casual drift toward a rockier future, which was confirmed on later (and weaker) releases like Stealin' Home and Kids Stuff from the mid-'70s. Although First Base makes for a solid listen, Grand Slam is the most opportune route to experience the best part of Babe Ruth's jazz-infused rock at one sitting. - allmusic.com

TRACKS:

LIZ MANDEVILLE - Clarksdale (2012)

This is Liz Mandeville’s fifth recording, first for her own and recently formed Blue Kitty Music label. This recording includes guests Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Eddie Shaw, Donna Herula, and Nick Moss, who are also dear old friends of Mandeville. Clarksdale is a mixed bag that covers various genres. I felt that Mandeville’s strongest selections are her more rocking and jump tunes. Kicking off the album is “Roadside Produce Stand” which finds her band tight and jumping in fine fashion. Mandeville’s vocals are also strong and definitely right on the target. I found “A Soldiers Wife” to be an odd inclusion; though lyrically passionate, it’s far from anything else on this recording and has no blues roots whatsoever. Eddie Shaw honks powerfully on the bouncy “Sweet Potato Pie,” and it’s a track that will definitely have you moving and grooving. I thoroughly dug Donna Herula’s slide work on the duet performance of “Sand Baggin,” which I suspect has connections to the 2011 Memphis floods. The album concludes with a jumping and hilarious “My Mama Wears Combat Boots,” which is seemingly a tip of the hat and tribute to women in our armed services, additionally Nick Moss adds some very sharp guitar licks on this upbeat and high-flying finale, which left me wanting for more songs from Mandeville’s fine album.

TRACKS:
01. Roadside Produce Stand (feat. Willie "Big Eyes" Smith) 02. Mama & Daddy Blues (feat. Willie "Big Eyes" Smith) 03. No Fear / Everything 04. Walking & Talking With You (feat. THE STONE COYOTES - A Wild Bird Flying (2012) thumbup
The Stone Coyotes are a bare-bones rock family trio who have taken the road less travelled ever since they gave back songwriter Barbara Keith's major label advance years ago. Moving from the studios of Los Angeles to their cellar in Western MA, they have forged their own sound, producing, recording and mixing their own way. With five songs featured in Elmore Leonard's novel, "Be Cool", several more on “Dog The Bounty Hunter”, satellite radio airplay and lots of word-of-mouth , their music continues to gain a bona fide grass roots momentum. The band's latest album is: MY TURN. Available now at stonecoyotes.com through Paypal and CDBaby. Also on Amazon, ITunes, Rhapsody, Napster and others.

SMOKE FAIRIES - Blood Speaks (2012)

Smoke Fairies is a British blues and folk musical duo formed by Katherine Blamire and Jessica Davies. By the time Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire received the publicity boost of a Jack White endorsement in 2009, they'd already been refining their sound together for a decade, hence the tight parameters of their 2010 debut – a vintage folk and blues furrow ploughed rather well. They speak of having broadened their influences since then but Blood Speaks deals in familiar virtues: subtle, minor key laments on which their voices twine elegantly around brooding guitars. The mood of gathering gloom occasionally drifts rather close to torpor, but Feel It Coming Near and the sublime Awake usher the darkness in beautifully.

TRACKS:
01. Let Me Know 02. Awake 03. The Three Of Us 04. Daylight 05. Blood Speaks 06. Take Me Down When You Go 07. Feel It Coming Near 08. Hideaway 09. Version Of The Future 10. Film Reel

JOHNNY MASTRO & MAMA'S BOYS - Luke's Dream (2012)

Regular nominees and winners of ‘Best Blues band’ and ‘Best unsigned band’ in various US west coast awards, Johnny Mastro & The Mamas Boys have been described as “edgy”, “gutbucket” and “rooted in the Butterfield/Bloomfield tradition” - all of which accurately sums up this band’s compelling music.

Johnny Mastro And The Mama's Boys follow up their genre stretching Beautiful Chaos with a step further on down the path of experimental blues. This release skirts the edge of psychedelic, with a heavy blues sound as if Black Sabbath were playing blues. With the addition of Peter Atanasoff (Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Tito & Tarantula, Rickie Lee Jones, Norah Jones) the band pushes the blues genre into a very cool area.

ALBERT CASTIGLIA - Living the Dream (2012)

Fans of traditional (yet completely contemporary) blues take note — Albert Castiglia has released an album that will have you singing anything but the blues. The album, titled Living the Dream, is a dream collection of solid blues tunes, performed with a relaxed, smoldering intensity by the electric bluesman. Living the Dream, Castiglia’s fifth solo album, opens with three momentum building, rockin’ tracks. The interplay between guitar and organ on the third song,“Freddie’s Boogie,” is as good as it gets. Things change tempo on the fourth song, “Directly From My Heart To You” (my favorite cut on the album). From this point on, Castiglia proves there’s little he cannot do. Song after song, we are treated to variations on blues styles that are examples of the diversity of sounds within the blues genre. There are acoustic songs, swampy delta blues songs and red-hot Chicago blues numbers.

Albert Castiglia is supported on the album by Bob Amsel (drums) and A.J. Kelly (bass), with guest appearances by John Ginty (keyboard), Sandy Mack (blues harp), Johnny Rizzo (acoustic slide) and Emedin Rivera (percussion). Together, these musicians do more than just play music — they create and sustain a vibe that is exactly what you are looking for if contemporary blues are your desire. - parcbench.com

KIRSTEN THIEN - You've Got Me (2006)

Kirsten Thien, a singer/songwriter based out of the ever-fruitful musical wellspring of New York City, has released her second full-length album, You ve Got Me. A musically literate, compositionally mature endeavor, You've Got Me seamlessly blends supple soul, easygoing pop rock, and blissful blues into a swirl of organic-sounding songs that feature Thien's sultry voice at the forefront. Thien found herself in the Big Apple after taking a job at Columbia University. She had been performing steadily during college, and after earning a finance degree, thought that the Columbia gig would be the perfect day job to balance her schedule and support her musical habit. But as the responsibilities of her job increased and began to conflict with her musical life, she decided that she needed to make music a full time fling. For most people this would be a worrisome, potentially cringe-worthy decision, but You ve Got Me proves this to be not so much of a reckless move. Thien is a natural at songwriting. Weaving her way through the lyrical intricacies of relationships both positive and negative, she seasons her songs with dashes of instrumental differentiation. There s a bed of Hammond organ on a song like "Is This The Love" a flourish of playful horns on "So Far Gone" and finally a mix of both to enhance the dramatic buildup of the beautifully bluesy "If Ever." But throughout, the real star here is Thien's voice. Oddly enough, Kirsten Thien's voice sounds hauntingly similar to Olivia Newton-John's. Only Thien sounds more like what would have happened if ONJ took singing and songwriting lessons from Bonnie Raitt. Thien always manages to show some vocal chops, but never allows it to get in the way of the song itself. She is an artist of endless potential with the talent to back it up, and the result here is a classy collection of timeless tunes. - amazon.com

BLINDSIDE BLUES BAND - Generator (2012)

Mike Onesko formed the Blindside Blues Band in the early 1990's with bassist Greg Chaisson and drummer Jeff Martin formerly of Jake E. Lee's "Badlands". Their mission statement was to create harder-edged blues music in the tradition of late 60's/early 70's blues-rock artists such as Cream, Mountain, and Robin Trower. After recording four critically-acclaimed CD's with some personnel changes along the way, the group fulfilled their initial contract with Blues Bureau and recorded a series of records for the Akarma and Grooveyard labels, each known for their quality releases in the psychedelic and blues-rock genres. "Generator" marks the return of the Blindside Blues Band to the Blues Bureau label delivering a rockin' new assortment of guitar-driven blues based numbers, heaped with incredible guitar playing influenced by their heroes. In addition to returning members guitarist/vocalist Mike Onesko, bassist Kier Staeheli, and drummer Emery Ceo, renowned blues solo artist Jay Jesse Johnson also brings his stylized brand of blues guitar flash and expert slide playing to bear in a series of phenomenal guitar interactions with Onesko and company. This is retro blues-rock at its finest, characterized by great songs, a powerhouse band, commanding vocals, and searing solos. - amazon.com

JON LORD - Before I Forget (1982)

Jon Lord joined WHITESNAKE in 1978 and began work on a solo album in 1981, utilising musicians from the Whitesnake circle. Jon handled the keyboards. Guitar duties were shared between Bernie Marsden and Mick Ralphs. Drums were handled by Ian Paice and Simon Phillips (with Cozy Powell and Simon Kirke - the latter, like Ralphs, a member of Bad Company - doing a track each). Neil Murray handled bass. Half the album was instrumental; for the rest, vocals were provided by Vicky and Sam Brown, Tony Ashton and Elmer Gantry.

The LP was released on June 28th 1982: "It shows my slightly schizophrenic musical personality. I've got a great love for classical and rock music and I find it very exciting trying to combine the two. Even as a kid I'd go into a record shop and buy something like the new Bill Haley single and a Beethoven symphony at the same time." An eclectic album, recommended for its variety, it has stood the test of time well. This edition has unissued bonus tracks: an album out-take and two songs for the follow-up, plus a radio interview.

PINETOP PERKINS - Live Top (1995)

When you think of mastery of the blues piano, Pinetop Perkins probably tops most people's list. For someone who has been making a living playing the blues since 1926, backing such greats as Sonny Boy Williamson, Earl Hooker, BB King, and Muddy Waters, only in the 1990s has Pinetop been a headliner in his own right. His first album for Deluge Records in 1992 was On Top. In 1995, Deluge released Live Top, a concert recorded at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine in October 1994. The liner notes state that this recording is one entire set "from start to finish." This CD serves either as a good introduction to Pinetop and blues piano or as a document of his 1994 tour with the Blue Flames (Doug Wainoris on guitar and backing vocals, David "D.W." Gill on harmonica and backing vocals, Jack Tukey on bass, "Bongo" Bob Noyes on drums, and Jake Isaacson on piano). The set list delivers a sprinkling of blues standards (Got My Mojo Working, Hoochie Coochie Man) to rarely heard pieces (I Had My Fun, After Hours).

TRACKS:
01. Chicken Shack 02. After Hours 03. High Heel Sneakers 04. Hoochie Coochie Man 05. Murmer Low 06. Five Years 07. I Had My Fun 08. Down in Mississippi 09. Low Down Dirty Shame 10. Got My Mojo Working 11. Caledonia 12. I Almost Lost My Mind

BILL WYMAN'S RHYTHM KINGS - Just For A Thrill (2004)

If there's such a thing as a world-class bar band, the former Rolling Stones bassist's Rhythm Kings qualify. Core members Albert Lee and Terry Taylor (guitar), Georgie Fame (keyboards), Graham Bond (drums), and, of course, Wyman himself, are among the Who's Who of British blues and R&B. No wonder the grooves flow so easily on these 15 tunes, which range from boogie and Delta classics to Motown soul to disco, even including a cover of the Beatles' "Taxman" delivered as a tribute to George Harrison, who played on the previous Rhythm Kings CD, 2001's Double Bill. Some interesting song choices and compelling vocal turns provide the highlights. The first is the neglected New Orleans gem "Down Home Girl," where Fame's molasses phrasing captures the laid-back pace of idealized life in the Crescent City. Beverly Skeet ignites "Cry Baby" in tribute to Janis Joplin, who immortalized the Garnet Mimms tune. And Ray Charles gets props with three numbers from his catalog, including a live recording of "Georgia on My Mind" that's beautifully rearranged for vocals and jazz guitar--the album's most adventurous turn. Wyman says he's ending the group's 16-year run here. If that's so, Just for a Thrill is a fitting swan song.

Mark Knopfler, Albert Lee and Georgie Fame head an all-star guest list that is sure to have avid jazz, blues and old school rock fans chomping at the bit for former Rolling Stone, Bill Wyman's 2004 solo effort. - amazon.com

GARY HUGHES - Once and Future King, Part 1 & 2 (2003)

Gary Hughes is an English hard rock singer, songwriter and musician. Apart from his work as a solo artist, Gary Hughes is the front man and main songwriter of Hard Rock/Melodic Rock band Ten. He has also worked as a producer and songwriter for Bob Catley's first three solo albums, as well as Hugo's first album and has appeared on Vinny Burns' The Journey solo album and on the Ayreonauts Only album by the band Ayreon.

Gary Hughes's Once and Future King joins Missa Mercuria as one of the absolute best of the new breed of rock operas. This superb release is based on the Legend of King Arthur and is split up into two parts. Part I features the following players: Gary Hughes (Ten) as Arthur, Lana Lane as Guinevere, Danny Vaughn (Tyketto) as Lancelot, Bob Catley (Magnum) as Merlin, Irene Jansen as Morgana, and Sean Harris (Diamond Head) as Galahad. Ayreon's Arjen Luccassen and Damian Wilson contribute to the disc as well. Once and Future King is a perfect example of all that is great about AOR/melodic rock. While it can get a bit heavy at times, this probably shouldn't be considered a metal opera like Ayreon or Star One, though it will certainly appeal to fans of those two projects. If you are into melodic rock and metal, I highly recommend checking this one out.

Once and Future King, Part 1
A rock opera inspired by the legend of King Arthur, written by & featuring Gary Hughes (Ten) along with appearances from Damian Wilson, Lana Lane, Danny Vaughn, Irene Jansen, Bob Catley, & Sean Harris.

THE FIRM

The Firm were a British rock supergroup comprising former Free and Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, ex-Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann's Earth Band drummer Chris Slade and bass player Tony Franklin. Page and Rodgers originally wanted former Yes drummer Bill Bruford and fretless bassist Pino Palladino in the group; however, Bruford was contracted to another label and Palladino had tour commitments with singer Paul Young. Both Page and Rodgers refused to play any material from their former bands and instead opted for a selection of Firm songs plus tracks from both their solo albums. The new songs were heavily infused with a soulful and more commercially-accessible sound, courtesy of Franklin's fretless bass guitar underpinning an understated song structure. Despite refusing to play old material, the last track from The Firm, "Midnight Moonlight", was originally an unreleased Led Zeppelin song entitled "The Swan Song". This caused some critics to believe that Page had begun to run out of ideas. In subsequent press interviews, Page had indicated that the band were never meant to last more than two albums. After the band split, Page and Rodgers returned to solo work while Chris Slade joined AC/DC and Franklin teamed up with guitarist John Sykes in Blue Murder.

Repeating the same bluesy formula as the debut album, Mean Business did not achieve the same commercial success. One of the album's tracks "Live in Peace" was first recorded on Paul Rodgers' first solo album, 1983's Cut Loose. The differences between the two versions was that Chris Slade played the drums slower than the Cut Loose version except for the ending and Jimmy Page added a bluesy guitar solo at the end of the song.

The Firm (1985):
01. Closer 02. Make Or Break 03. Someone To Love 04. Together 05. Radioactive 06. You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling 07. Money Can't Buy 08. Satisfaction Guaranteed 09. Midnight Moonlight

Mean Business (1986):
01. Fortune Hunter 02. Cadillac 03. All The King's Horses 04. Live In Peace 05. Tear Down The Walls 06. Dreaming 07. Free To Live 08. Spirit Of Love

JOE LOUIS WALKER - Hellfire (2012)

On his new disc, 'Hellfire,' Mr. Walker does again what he's done for so long, only this time with more clarity. Produced and mixed by Tom Hambridge, who oversaw recent solid albums by Buddy Guy and George Thorogood, 'Hellfire' presents Mr. Walker playing jump blues; slow, searing blues; Rolling Stones-style rockin' blues; electric country blues; Chicago blues that's Mr. Walker wailing on harmonica on ''I'm on to You'' and gospel blues featuring the Jordanaires, the vocal quartet that supported Elvis Presley. Mr. Walker's raspy, powerhouse voice is out front while his stinging guitar cuts through the uncluttered arrangements. He contributed three original compositions and worked with Mr. Hambridge and Richard Fleming on two other new tunes; another new one, the smoldering Hambridge-Fleming song ''What It's Worth,'' was earmarked for Bobby Blue Bland until Mr. Walker stepped in. The disc closes with a hot cover of Hank Snow's ''Movin' On.''

With Hellfire, Joe Louis Walker takes his rightful place among legendary electric blues singer/guitarist/songwriters like B.B. King and Buddy Guy. The Blues Music Award winner has been releasing critically-acclaimed albums and touring the world since 1986. Produced by Grammy Award winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, George Thorogood, Susan Tedeschi), the blistering Hellfire is Joe Louis Walker's calling card for coronation. - amazon.com

THE FOUR HORSEMEN - Gettin' Pretty Good...At Barely Gettin' By... (1996)

The Four Horsemen were quite literally a shattered band come 1996. Five years on from their simplistic but infectious retro-rock debut, they'd been dropped by Def American, been abandoned by their main songwriter guiding force in founding guitarist Haggis, and, most heartbreaking of all, lost drummer Ken "Dimwit" Montgomery to a drug overdose. As the band's last remaining original members, it came down to guitarist Dave Lizmi and troubled singer Frank C. Starr (more on him later) to assemble a new lineup and attempt to shoulder the load themselves on the snidely named Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By. And they did an OK job. The album still featured much of The Four Horsemen's stripped-down, hard-rocking style, but standout cuts such as "Hot Rod" and the poignant "Song for Absent Friends" generally lacked the Southern Skynyrd flavor, and especially the power boogie AC/DC crunch of old. Instead, the album mostly resorted to a mellower, more soulful, decidedly sleeker Black Crowes-type groove for tracks like the title song and "Drunk Again" (note background lady singers). A few songs also forced the "we're still rockin''' storyline ad nauseam (see cheesy opener "Still Alive and Well" and the edgier, frankly biographical "Back in Business Again"), while others simply lacked originality (for example, "Livin' These Blues," which apes the debut's hit, "Tired Wings," a tad too closely). Still, the fact that's it's clearly inferior compared to its predecessor shouldn't entirely detract from this album's good-time blue-collar rock & roll, and fans of the Horsemen will likely want to give it a chance anyway. Sadly, Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By proved to be the final musical testament for singer Starr, who passed away under tragic circumstances a few years later. - allmusic.com

DEEP PURPLE - Shades 1968 - 1998 (1999)

SHADES 1968-1998 is a 4-disc deluxe box which includes a 54-page booklet featuring liner notes by David McLees, essays by Jim Ladd and Tim Joseph, a song-by-song annotation by Mick Wall as well as rare photos and a complete discography. Although Deep Purple is rumored to have provided the most fodder for the heavy metal parody Spinal Tap, their influence on the world of hard rock is as important as either Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. SHADES covers 30 years of recording done by a myriad of line-ups. Deep Purple, named after Nino Tempo and April Stevens' version of the standard, started out as a psychedelic pop act before quickly evolving into a hard rock band characterized by keyboardist Jon Lord's classical tendencies and Ritchie Blackmore's over-the-top, pull-off arpeggio solos.

Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Gary Hersch (DigiPrep).

Purple's most successful and popular line-up (Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan) spent the early '70s cultivating their hard rock credentials with landmark albums such as DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK, FIREBALL, and the granddaddy of 'em all, MACHINE HEAD. "Space Truckin'," "Speed King," "Highway Star," and of course "Smoke On The Water" are classic Purple triumphs populated by muscular riffs and potent decibels loathed by critics and adored by the public. Internal dissension led to future line-up changes that found Deep Purple becoming a base from which former and future members became part of groups ranging from Whitesnake and Rainbow to Black Sabbath and the Dixie Dregs. - cduniverse.com

MUDDY WATERS & THE ROLLING STONES - Checkerboard Lounge: Live Chicago 1981 (2012) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

A DVD/CD set documenting a historic November 1981 concert at which blues legend Muddy Waters was joined by most of The Rolling Stones‘ members released on July 10. Muddy Waters & The Rolling Stones Live at the Checkerboard Lounge Chicago 1981 features Waters performing a set of blues classics with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Stones touring pianist Ian Stewart sitting in on several numbers.

The story behind the show was that The Stones were touring the U.S. at the time, and during a night off, they noticed that Waters had a concert scheduled at his Chi-town club, so they decided to drop by the venue. During the show, Waters called the British rockers up on stage to play with him. Also joining in the action that evening were fellow blues greats Buddy Guy and Junior Wells.

Among the songs played at the gig were “Baby Please Don’t Go,” “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Mannish Boy” and “Got My Mojo Working.” The DVD/CD release will mark the first time that this performance, long a popular bootleg item, will be officially available for purchase. The audio has been remixed and remastered by longtime Stones studio engineer Bob Clearmountain. - classichitsandoldies.com

MARK - ALMOND

Mark–Almond were an English band of the late 1960s and early 1970s, who worked in the territory between rock and jazz. In 1970 Jon Mark and Johnny Almond formed Mark-Almond (also occasionally referred to as The Mark-Almond Band). The melancholy tones of saxophonist Almond were an integral part of the group's sound, and Almond frequently played flute as well, including the bass flute. Characterized by a blend of blues and jazz riffs, latin beats, and a mellow rock aesthetic, and in contrast to the heavier guitar-driven rock of his contemporaries, composer and band leader Mark worked at producing warm and melodic works.

Jon Mark and Mick Jagger co-produced Marianne Faithfull's early recordings, for which Mark played and toured with Faithfull on acoustic guitar. He also toured with folksinger Alun Davies (later of Cat Stevens), and was a bandmate of Davies in the short-lived Sweet Thursday. Johnny Almond had previously played in the Alan Price Set and had recorded a 1970 solo record for Deram Records, Johnny Almond's Music Machine, as well as performing considerable session work in England, working with Chicken Shack and others. The two began playing together in John Mayall's popular Bluesbreakers band in 1969, and can be heard on the records The Turning Point and Empty Rooms. From that experience they decided to form Mark-Almond.

BERNIE MARSDEN - Green And Blues: Tribute To Peter Green (2001) thumbup

Blues rock guitarist Bernie Marsden's hot licks helped launch the career of Whitesnake, as he played on the group's first eight releases, and lent a major hand in composing some of the band's most renowned songs. Initially inspired to play the guitar as a teenager due to such authentic blues players as Howling Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson, Marsden later picked up on such '60s white blues players as Peter Green, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck. The early '70s saw Marsden briefly join several renowned groups - Juicy Lucy and UFO - but each time, the guitarist exited before a full-length album could be completed (Marsden was also a member of a group that drummer Cozy Powell attempted to put together, Hammer, before quickly disbanding). Marsden has also sporadically issued further solo recordings, including 1992's The Friday Rock Show Sessions and the Peter Green tribute, Green and Blues.

Bernie pays tribute to the great one on this thing, Peter Green. Well worth owning by any Marsden or Peter Green fan.

HEADS HANDS & FEET

Following the dissolution of Poet and the One Man Band, Albert Lee (guitar), Pete Gavin (drums), Tony Colton (vocals) and Ray Smith (guitar) got together with Chas Hodges (bass, violin, vocals) and Mike O'Neill (keyboards) to form the country-influenced Heads, Hands and Feet and recorded a double album that had a great deal in common with the work of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the Grateful Dead at that time. Their self-titled debut album, populated with guests from the folk and singer-songwriter scenes, was released as a double record in the U.S., but only as a single album in Europe. The record was very well regarded, with Lee's guitar work garnering attention.

Keyboardist O'Neill departed soon after the album's release, and the band proceeded to move away from country influences and towards rock. While the band was able to record and release Tracks to a certain amount of acclaim, internal strife caused continuing problems, splintering the band before the 1973 release of Old Soldiers Never Die, which marked the group's move to Atlantic Records. In 1996, See For Miles released Home From Home, a collection of recordings and demos made before the band's first label signing. Albert Lee moved on to found the Albert Lee Band with Pete Gavin and Chas Hodges and eventually joined Eric Clapton's band. Chas Hodges later formed the duo Chas & Dave with Dave Peacock.

SHELBY LYNNE - Revelation Road (2011)

Shelby Lynne is an American singer and songwriter. The success of the 1999 album I Am Shelby Lynne led to her winning the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, even though she had been active in the music industry for some time. Since then she has started her own independent record label, called Everso Records, and released three albums: Tears, Lies and Alibis, Merry Christmas, and Revelation Road. She also joined the 9th and 10th annual Independent Music Awards judging panel to assist independent musicians' careers.

2011 album from the singer/songwriter. Revelation Road is Shelby's most personal record yet. ELENI MANDELL - I Can See The Future (2012)

Produced by Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, The Strokes, White Stripes), the two put together a impressive group of players for the sessions; their combined dream teams yielded a variety of instrumental flavors that complement and frame Mandell’s dreamy, understated singing. The pedal steel guitar of Greg Leisz helps paint the Southwestern imagery of “Desert Song,” saxophonist Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) burnishes the soulful contours of “Who You Gonna Dance With,” and Benji Hughes plays Lee Hazlewood to Eleni’s Nancy Sinatra on the rambling “Never Have To Fall In Love Again.” Joey Waronker plays drums throughout, including the brushed snares of the jazzy “So Easy.” Mandell’s colleagues from vocal trio the Living Sisters contribute backing vocals throughout, while the string and horn arrangements of Bright Eyes’ Nathaniel Walcott lend a classic pop sensibility to tunes like “Magic Summertime” and “I’m Lucky.” - elenimandell.com

SWEET - New York Connection (2012) thumbup

With worldwide album sales of more than 55 million copies, SWEET have notched 34 Number One smashes across the globe as part of a run of timeless hits that includes ‘Blockbuster!’, ‘Hell Raiser’, ‘The Ballroom Blitz’, ‘The Six Teens’, ‘Action’, ‘Fox On The Run’ and ‘Love Is Like Oxygen’. Seen on Top Of The Pops on what felt like a weekly basis throughout the 1970s, their über-harmonious, multi-tracked guitar work and layered production was to provide inspiration to other acts such as Queen, the Electric Light Orchestra and, in later decades, Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe and The Darkness.

Now comes ‘New York Connection’. Recorded by original member Andy Scott (guitar and vocals) and his current line-up of Pete Lincoln (lead vocals and bass guitar), Tony O’Hora (guitar, keyboards and vocals) and Bruce Bisland (drums and vocals), the new album is a selection of material originally penned by other artists awarded the band’s instantly recognizable thumb-print. So it’s a boring covers album, then? Well, no. Not really. This time there’s a bit of a twist.

SLADE - Live At The BBC (2009)

It must be getting harder to find new Slade material to trudge out every Christmas but this is a treat, tracing the Black Country rockers' fascinating 1969-72 progress from a band Tony Blackburn introduces as "the skinhead set" to the biggest pop phenomenon since Beatlemania. These long-lost radio sessions give some feeling of how they arrived in the peace'n'love era like a force-10 gale, with Radio 2's Jimmy Young commenting he'd "never heard such a row in my life." Initially a "travelling jukebox" giving garage-punk-meets-psychedelic-rock treatments to songs from everyone from Fairport Convention to Janis Joplin, other tracks hint at what was to come. The second CD - a live broadcast in London - captures a band at the peak of their glam stomp, romping through Mama Weer All Crazee Now and the rest - with a roadie sitting in front of the drum kit to stop it moving - about to inspire everyone from the Sex Pistols to Oasis.

KERI LEIGH

Vocalist, songwriter, record producer, journalist, and author Keri Leigh is one of these multi-talented, accomplished individuals who the blues music world can't seem to get enough of. And the fact that she's barely 30 years old ensures that she'll be around, pursuing her number one passion -- singing the blues -- for a long time. Her latest album, Arrival, (1995), for the Jackson, Mississippi-based Malaco Records label, isn't with her usual backing band, the Blue Devils, but it was recorded at Muscle Shoals Studios (which Malaco owns), and Leigh and her husband acted as co-producers of the record. Leigh moved to Austin from her native Oklahoma with her guitarist/husband Mark Lyon in 1990. Fortunately, they were welcomed (for the most part) with open arms by the Austin blues community, and certainly by Clifford Antone, owner of Antone's blues nightclub, who booked them into his place every week for about a year. Within a year of so of her moving to Austin, she began work on her first book, Stevie Ray: Soul to Soul, (Taylor Books, Dallas), a passionate account of the ups and downs of the late guitarist's all-too-short life. Leigh first met Vaughan when she interviewed him in 1986, and after several interviews, they became friends. In May 1990, they began work on what was to be his autobiography, but in August of that year, Vaughan was killed in a helicopter accident in Wisconsin.

Leigh's recordings all have a Joplin-esque quality to them, and one way to describe her singing style is as a Janis Joplin for the '90s; in fact, some critics have described her as the greatest voice to come out of Texas since Joplin. Leigh has used her background as a radio and newspaper journalist to get publicity for the Blue Devils, and a glance at her overflowing press-clips folder shows what a hustler she is. But Leigh and her band work as hard as any of the other touring blues musicians around the U.S., and they spend upwards of 150 nights a year on the road. Leigh's husband Lyon is one of the most naturally gifted slide guitarists you'll ever hear, and the ease with which he handles the instrument makes it look deceptively simple. In fact, good blues guitar is very difficult to play, but Lyon has all the moves down pat. Leigh and her Blue Devils have two releases out on Amazing Records (a now-defunct label), No Beginner (1993) and Blue Devil Blues, their debut (1991), in addition to their latest Malaco album. Arrival, consisting of one-half originals and one-half cover tunes, is certainly the most accessible of her recordings. Leigh and her group have many more good years ahead of them; wherever they go, their affable ways earn them new friends and fans in the blues world. They also have a knack for making new blues converts out of rock & rollers. - answers.com

CESAR ROSAS - Soul Disguise (1999)

Cesar Rosas' first solo album, Soul Disguise makes no effort to move beyond the range of material he contributed to Los Lobos. In fact, Soul Disguise sounds positively conservative compared to Los Lobos albums like Kiko and Colossal Head. Full of blues, soul, R&B and accordion-driven Mexican tunes, Soul Disguise takes Rosas back to the kind of sound that typified the first full-length Los Lobos LP, How Will the Wolf Survive? The blues pervade the album. The hard-driving title track could have originated in the Texas blues scene, with a guitar solo that conjures up the spirit of Jimi Hendrix. Ike Turner's "You've Got to Lose" is a brutal chunk of R&B that Rosas makes his own. The slow and steamy "E. Los Ballad #13" and the funky "Treat Me Right" are soul-inflected blues, with Rosas applying a touch of tenderness in his vocals. But the album is more than just modern blues. The opening track, "Little Heaven," is a slice of love-ain't-what-it-used-to-be storytelling, and "Racing the Moon" is just the sort of rock-flavored song that could be covered by one of the new country hat acts. The two songs in Spanish feature accordion master Flaco Jimenez: "Angelito" is a polka that just won't quit, and "Adios Mi Vida" is a tender waltz. Throughout Soul Disguise, Rosas lets his influences show while at the same time sounding like nobody but himself. It's a fine album, entertaining in the best sense of the word, and essential for fans of Los Lobos. -allmusic.com

JOHN HAMMOND - Long As I Have You (1998)

On his 35th album, John Hammond continues his quest to carry on the blues tradition by delving into the catalogs of giants such as Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers and Willie Dixon. Backing Hammond on most of LONG AS I HAVE YOU are Little Charlie and the Nightcats, a Chicago quintet who've established themselves via a long-time association with Alligator Records. Hammond's growls and crooning are perfectly complimented by guitarist Charlie Baty's smooth, West Coast style of playing, particularly on the title track and "So Many Roads, So Many Trains," songs that bring to mind smoky bars and lots of drinking in a dark corner. Rick Estrin's harp playing does justice to a pair of Sonny Boy Williamson nets ("Don't Start Me Talkin'," "Sad To Be Alone"), and his songwriting contribution is a Bo Diddley-esque number that Hammond wraps his vocals around ("I Feel So Sorry"). Wrapping up Hammond's album are a batch of J.J. Cale-produced numbers that find this student of the blues and accompanist Washboard Chaz ching along in a manner that makes you forget that only two people are playing.

LONG AS I HAVE YOU was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album.

ALBERT LEE - Heartbreak Hill (2003) thumbup

Albert Lee has garnered such a good command of American country music it will probably surprise a few listeners that he was born in England. On Heartbreak Hill, he delves into a number of songs associated with Gram Parsons, Rodney Crowell, and former bandmate Emmylou Harris. Lee has a well-deserved rep for his guitar skills, so it makes good sense that he's joined by a top-notch band that includes veteran steel player Buddy Emmons. The band opens strong with the jaunty title cut before sliding into Paul Kennerley's heartbreaking "Heaven Only Knows." Lee's joined on vocals by Patty Loveless on the first cut and Buddy Miller on the latter, adding extra pizzazz to the choruses. The arrangements -- steel, piano, drums, and bass -- achieve a good blend behind the vocals, while Lee's multiple guitar parts add subtle touches in unexpected places. Other enjoyable cuts include Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You," Kennerley's "Born to Run," and -- for guitar fans -- an instrumental take on Parsons' "Luxury Liner." Heartbreak Hill never overwhelms the listener with its originality, at least partially because it is so grounded in music associated with other people. But Lee and his bandmates have crafted a solid and likable album that lovingly recalls the best of '70s and '80s country. - allmusic.com

BREAD - Retrospective (1996)

Bread were the melodic soft-rock band, best known for the hits "If" and "Make it with You". The band were formed by singer/keyboard player/producer David Gates and singer guitarist James Griffin in 1968, originally the idea had been to continue Griffin's, already established, solo career, by having producer-Gates work on Griffin's next album. However, when another guitarist Robb Royer was brought onboard, Bread were formed. They released their self-titled debut album in 1968, which showcased the soft rock sound that the band became famous for, however sales were slow and they would have to wait for the follow-up for success. The next album On the Waters included "Make it with You" which topped the US charts, the band added a drummer, Mike Botts, to the line-up and took to the road. The album became the bands' first gold-seller.

Despite the success of the lead single "If" from Manna, sales didn't match its predecessor and it was back to the studio for the band, this time minus Royer, who had left the band, replaced by Larry Knetchtel. The new line-up came back with "Baby I'm- a Want You" and "Everything I Own", both hit the top five and the band were back on a roll, when Baby I'm- a Want You achieved their highest chart placing of No.3. The critically acclaimed Guitar Man was without a top ten hit and sales of the album were disappointing, which lead to tensions between Gates and Griffin; an argument over song credits put the band on hold for four years. In 1977 Bread hit the singles charts for the last time with "Lost Without your Love", from the album of the same name, released the previous year. When tensions between Gates and Griffin re-emerged, Griffin left, while Gates carried on touring with the name Bread. Inevitably a legal wrangle over the ownership of the name etc. ensued, and all things Bread-related were off the menu until the resolution of the argument in 1984. Meantime both Gates and Griffin pursued solo careers. They got back together in 1996 for the 25th Anniversary Tour, but any further releases by Bread were compilations of previous hits.

DAWES thumbup

Dawes is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, composed of brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, along with Wylie Gelber and Tay Strathairn. Dawes was formed from the band Simon Dawes after the departure of co-songwriter Blake Mills, subsequently abandoning a post-punk sound in favor of folk rock. Dawes is part of the Laurel Canyon sound, which often cites influences such as Crosby, Stills, and Nash and Neil Young, among others. At the invitation of producer Jonathan Wilson, the band joined a local informal jam session that included Conor Oberst, The Black Crowes's Chris Robinson, and Benmont Tench. The band recorded their debut album, North Hills, in Laurel Canyon in a live setting to analog tape, resulting in a sound that Rolling Stone magazine called "authentically vintage". Wilco multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone is also credited with appearing on the release. Dawes released their second album, Nothing Is Wrong, on June 7, 2011 and toured the US co-headlining with Blitzen Trapper.

DEEP PURPLE - Singles A's & B's (1993) [2012 Digitally Remastered]

Singles A's & B's focuses on the group's original period of recording (1968-1976) and dutifully collects all the single-oriented highlights from this era, including such hard-rocking classics as "Smoke on the Water," "Black Night," and "Hush." It also includes a number of non-album sides that make the package worthwhile for anyone seriously interested in the group. One of the most surprising aspects of this collection is that the B-sides are often just as good as the A-sides: "I'm Alone" is a hard-swinging rocker worthy of the band's better-known hits and "When a Blind Man Cries" is a wrenching, blues-inflected ballad that is one of group's best slow numbers. The format also allows re-evaluation of Deep Purple's lesser-known material: A great example is "One More Rainy Day," a catchy tune from the group's oft-overlooked late-'60s period that weds a hook-laden pop melody to a combination of flowery organ riffs and Ian Paice's hard-hitting drum fills. The package is rounded out by a comprehensive set of liner notes from Simon Robinson that supplies context and trivia in equal measure in a colorful layout full of rare single sleeve images. All in all, Singles A's & B's works both as a comprehensive primer on Deep Purple's heyday and also as a consistent double album's worth of well-crafted hard rock.

GUNS N' ROSES - Live Era '87-'93 (1999)

Guns N' Roses' career could be neatly summed up in a lyric from their song "Pretty Tied Up": "I just found a million dollars that someone else forgot." Indeed, GNR satisfied a grassroots public hunger for bigger-than-life hard rock at a time when legions of alternative bands were enjoying their first burst of overweening critical attention and commercial cachet. The last and most spectacularly successful band to prosper from Hollywood's burgeoning 1980s Sunset Strip glam-metal scene wrapped a couple decade's worth of sometimes tired clichés around a tight, assaultive musical attack that enticed millions yearning for poor role models. And if their edgy songs often blurred fantasy and reality, the best of them had a street-level honesty that couldn't be denied. A de facto greatest-hits collection culled from performances recorded around the world, Live Era best documents the early, ferocious performing prime of GNR's original quintet on its first disc, leaning heavily on their landmark Appetite for Destruction album to great effect. But the second volume often chronicles the band's steady decline into bloated self-parody and neo-Vegas "professionalism." This band needs a horn section like Slash needs another drink! - amazon.com

V.A. - No Nukes [Soundtrack] (1980) thumbupthumbupthumbup

In addition to raising public consciousness about the dangers of nuclear power, the 1979 series of star-studded anti-nuclear concerts at Madison Square Garden were a significant event both musically and historically. The shows were immortalized in a feature film and on this 2 CD set. Among those featured on the album are such '70s soft-rock icons as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Carly Simon, the Doobie Brothers, and Crosby, Stills and Nash, along with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Ry Cooder, and Gil Scott-Heron for a token dose of grit. Inevitably, Springsteen's "Devil with the Blue Dress Medley" steals the show, but otherwise No Nukes doubles as both a handy '70s-rock sampler and a historical keepsake.

Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on September 19-23, 1979.

ELO - Flashback (2000)

Formed in 1971 as a side project to the Move by Roy Wood, Bev Bevan, and singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer Jeff Lynne, the Electric Light Orchestra immediately revealed the Brits' genius in combining rococo pop songs with classical instrumentation. Though the multitalented Wood largely produced the band's debut, his departure pushed Lynne's style to the fore, as evidenced by the listener-friendly "Showdown" and crunchier "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle." Beautiful classical arrangements also grace "Mama."

In 1974 the group's slickly produced pop rock cracked the Top 10 with the atmospheric ballad "Can't Get It Out of My Head." Although ELO's sound became increasingly commercial in the late '70s, it was no less grand, as demonstrated by the violin arpeggios in "Livin' Thing" and the swirling, complex string arrangement of "Telephone Line." The group continued its chart success in the face of MTV and changing tastes with polished '50s style gems like "Rock and Roll Is King" and "Hold On Tight," before disbanding in 1986. Including previously unreleased tracks, and tunes recently completed by Lynne, FLASHBACK is a fine set. Contains a 44 page booklet with liner notes by David Wild.

Personnel: Roy Wood (vocals); Jeff Lynne (guitar); Marc Mann (keyboards); Bev Bevan (drums).

Digitally remastered by Doug Sax and Robert Hadley (The Mastering Lab, Hollywood, California).

ROBERT PALMER - The Ultimate Collection (2003)

Robert Palmer (1949 – 2003), was an English singer-songwriter. He was known for his distinctive voice and the eclectic mix of musical styles on his albums, combining soul, jazz, rock, pop, reggae and blues. He found success both in his solo career and in the musical act Power Station, and had Top 10 songs in both the US and the UK. His iconic music videos by Terence Donovan for the hits "Simply Irresistible" and "Addicted to Love" featured identically dressed dancing women with pale faces, dark eye makeup and bright red lipstick, which resembled the women in the art of Patrick Nagel, an artist popular in the 1980s. Sharp-suited, his involvement in the music industry commenced in the 1960s, covered five decades and included a spell with Vinegar Joe. Palmer received a number of awards throughout his career, including two Grammy Awards for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, an MTV Video Music Award, and was twice nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male.

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN & DOUBLE TROUBLE - The Real Deal: Greatest Hits Volume 1 & 2 (1999 / 2006)

This is a fine 16-track introduction (Volume 1) to Stevie Ray Vaughan. Here are the early rollicking blues hits like "Texas Flood," "Couldn't Stand the Weather," and "Cold Shot," to the middle period Hendrix-drenched "Say What?" "Come On, Pt. 3," and the late R&B-drenched tunes such as "Crossfire," "Tightrope," and "The House Is Rockin'." There is also a live version of Elmore James' "The Sky Is Crying" tagged on at the end that digs deep into blues history. This is a great introduction for novices and a cool comp for those who already have everything.

The Real Deal: Greatest Hits, Volume 2 is a compilation album of material by Stevie Ray Vaughan in 1999 (see 1999 in music). The album was released by Epic Records and includes material from the five studio albums he released with Double Trouble as well as live material and collaborations with brother Jimmie and surf guitarist Dick Dale.

Volume 1: 01. Pride and Joy 02. Mary Had a Little Lamb 03. Texas Food 04. Rude Mood 05. Couldn't Stand the Weather 06. Cold Shot 07. The Things (That) I Used to Do 08. Tin Pan Alley (A.K.A. The Roughest Place in Town) 09. Say What! 10. Change It 11. Come on (Part II) 12. Without You 13. The House Is Rockin' 14. Crossfire 15. Tightrope 16. The Sky Is Crying (Live At Carnegie Hall)

Joey Ramone’s posthumous albums...

There is always something rather unsettling about posthumous releases. This is partly due to the fact that they tend to be an effective vehicle for pling a famous name for more money, but more importantly, is the end result what the artists really would have wanted? Joey Ramone’s posthumous debut, Don’t Worry About Me, was released a year after his death from lymphoma in 2001. The record was far from groundbreaking - and it was probably more or less what Ramone had intended - but it did feature his punchy reinterpretation of Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World.

Now, 10 years on, comes Ramone’s second posthumous release, entitled Ya Know? Like its predecessor there is little on the Ramones frontman’s second effort to really stoke up much excitement. As is the way with these releases, it’s a fairly drab affair that doesn’t really do anyone any justice, least of all Joey Ramone. After spending so many years fronting the Ramones with his signature snarling vocal, Ya Know? just feels an inadequate tribute, filled with re-hashed Ramones songs and fleshed-out cuts. It’s not all bad, though.

Don't Worry About Me (2002) : 01. What a Wonderful World 02. Stop Thinking About It 03. Mr. Punchy 04. Maria Bartiromo 05. Spirit in My House 06. Venting (It's a Different World Today) 07. Like a Drug I Never Did Before 08. Searching for Something 09. I Got Knocked Down (But I'll Get Up) 10. 1969 11. Don't Worry About Me

...Ya Know? : 01. Rock ‘n Roll Is The Answer 02. Going Nowhere Fast 03. New York City 04. Waiting For That Railroad 05. I Couldn’t Sleep 06. What Did I Do To Deserve You 07. Seven Days Of Gloom 08. Eyes Of Green 09. Party Line 10. Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight) 11. 21st Century Girl 12. There’s Got To Be More To Life 13. Make Me Tremble 14. Cabin Fever 15. Life’s A Gas

OST [James William Guercio] - Electra Glide In Blue (1973)

Electra Glide in Blue is a 1973 film starring Robert Blake as a motorcycle cop in Arizona and Billy Green Bush as his partner. The name stems from the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide motorcycle issued to traffic cops. The movie was filmed in Monument Valley and Fountain Hills, Arizona, in the area around Shea Boulevard and the Beeline Highway (SR 87), which at the time, was undeveloped desert. It was produced and directed by James William Guercio (who is best known as the producer of rock band Chicago's first eleven albums). The film was entered into the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, but was loathed by critics. However, Robert Blake was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance and it garnered a great deal of critical acclaim upon its nationwide release. Whilst it saw only limited commercial success, it was given cult status for many years.

Several members of the band Chicago appear in minor roles, including Peter Cetera, Terry Kath, Lee Loughnane and Walter Parazaider, as well as David "Hawk" Wolinski from the Guercio-produced band Madura.

V.A. - Woodstock Mountains - Music from Mud Acres (1987) thumbupthumbupthumbup

This CD is a compilation from the three Woodstock Mountain Revue Lp's that came out in the late 60's and early 70's. The Revue were "folk" musicians who lived in and around Woodstock, NY including Happy and Artie Traum, John Herald, Eric Anderson, John Sebastian, Paul Butterfield, Pat Alger, and many others. The original lp's spent so much time on our turntable that we would spontaneously start singing the next song as each song ended. We knew every word of every song. This is elemental Americana of near quality to the music that Dylan and the Band were making in a nearby basement a couple of years earlier. The material which includes wonderful originals as well as covers of Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, and Jimmy Rodgers (among others) is uniformly excellent. These folks obviously enjoy playing together. The music has a joyous spontaneity and yet is oddly polished. Great stuff, that deserves a much larger audience.

TRACKS:
01. Mud Acres 02. Pretty Boy Floyd 03. Bluegrass Boy 04. Old Time Music 05. My Love Is But a Lassie Yet 06. Darlin' Corey Is Gone 07. Barbed Wire 08. Killing the Blues 09. Gone Girl 10. Cold Front 11. Mason Dixon's on the Line 12. Carolina In My Mind 13. First Waltz 14. Panhandle Rag 15. Long Journey 16. Ocracoke Time 17. Sleep With One Eye Open 18. Warm Rain 19. Pretty Lucky 20. Sally Ann 21. Starry Eyed Songs 22. Amazing Grace

Performers include: Pat Alger, Eric Andersen, Lee Berg, Rory Block, Tony Brown, Paul Butterfield, Larry Campbell, Caroline Dutton, John Herald, Eric Kaz, Bill Keith, Maria Muldaur, Jim Rooney, Roly Salley, John Sebastian, Paul Siebel, Artie Traum, Happy Traum.
