LAURA MARLING - A Creature I Don't Know (2011)

Laura Beatrice Marling is an English folk musician from Eversley, Hampshire. Initially prominent within the London folk scene, she has also toured with a number of well-known indie artists in the UK. Her sound is characterised by striking melodies and poetic lyricism. Her debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim and her second album I Speak Because I Can were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2008 and 2010 respectively (download link too). She won Best Female Solo Artist at the 2011 Brit Awards.

"A Creature I Don't Know" is Laura Marling's third album. Since her emergence from the London folk scene in 2007 Laura continues to be one of the most exciting musical talents of her generation. A Creature I Don't Know is a boldly accomplished and endlessly impressive album. Ten songs of intricate and captivating story telling, buoyed by Marling's rich voice, evocative lyrics and the precise, confident playing on every track. Her delivery is pitch perfect, her voice going from delicate whisper to brooding murmur and rousing wail, sometimes all in the very same sentence.

TED NUGENT - Double Live Gonzo! (1978)

As exciting as they were, Ted Nugent's first three albums lacked the sonic punch in the gut of his outrageous live performances, something readily proved by 1978's classic Double Live Gonzo! Both Nugent and his band are in top form, yielding a fierce performance of their numerous mid-'70s classics. Mega-hit "Cat Scratch Fever" makes an obligatory appearance, but it's the songs from Nugent's self-titled debut which truly stand out. "Just What the Doctor Ordered" is damn near perfect, and the band really clicks on extended jams through "Motor City Madhouse" and the fantastic "Stranglehold." A consummate showman, Nugent also unleashes a number of hilarious, motormouth stage raps on "Baby Please Don't Go" and "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" before offering the definitive version of his early classic "Great White Buffalo." In the year of the live album (1978), this one's about as good as they come. - allmusic.com

BJORN BERGE - Blackwood (2011)

Bjorn Berge is an acoustic genius. The Norwegian singer can move mountains with his acoustic guitars, he can outplay the hardest metalheads and raise an enormous amount of energy. His repertoire ranges from his own powerful songs to smashing cover versions, which are much more than standard versions of old hits thanks to Berge’s brutish voice and extremely dynamic guitar technique. Although this statement is only partial true: Despite all this, Berge’s music is always catchy and soulful. His concerts are definitely the acoustic guitar event of this decade. Bjorn Berge has been playing guitar and banjo since he was 13 years old and since then he has been interested in music and playing. During his career he’s earned a reputation for being an outstanding guitarist. His “fingerpicking style” is at a unique level and has made him a popular performer on the European arena, as well as concerts in Canada and the United States. On this new album, Berge has written all the songs himself, except two. Musically, he goes a little more back to the roots and it’s on a natural path from his previous album “Fretwork” from 2009. - sceneupdate.com

ROY ROBERTS - Sicily Moon (2006)

With the exception of "Show Me What You Got" which is a straight out (and totally inane) rap track, this disc falls pretty squarely into the soul blues niche. Robert's buttery smooth vocals recall Robert Cray and even the Rev. Al Green on a couple of tracks. While he lacks Green's falsetto he has the same warm center to his voice that makes it such a compelling instrument. Expertly backed by the MoFo horns, who lay down a brassy groove straight out of Memphis by way of Asbury Park, Roberts weaves tales of loving, "I'm Gonna Love You" cheating, "You Better Pack Up," strutting your stuff "Turn That Thang Around" and slipping away for some nocturnal bliss "Baby" (where he does a pretty mean Barry White imitation). The title track is a homage to the Italian audiences that have adopted him over the years. Oddly enough, while he made his name as a guitarist backing the likes of Otis Redding and Solomon Burke, Roberts doesn't play a single string on this disc and instead focuses his efforts on keyboards. - bluessource.com

TRACY CHAPMAN - Collection (2001)

The 2001 import Collection is the first compilation to round up Tracy Chapman's key tracks, and it succeeds on every level. All the hits (and almost-hits) are here, beginning with her two U.S. Top Tens - the legendary "Fast Car" and the bluesy comeback hit "Give Me One Reason." Other charted singles on this album include the fiery, politically charged "Talkin' Bout a Revolution," the ghostly, self-determined "Crossroads," the 2000 single "Telling Stories," and "Baby Can I Hold You," arguably one of the most stirring and beautiful songs ever recorded. In fact, this set features tracks from all five of Chapman's albums, but, since her musical output has been so consistent, several favorites, such as "Freedom Now" from Crossroads, were left off, and Matters of the Heart is represented only by two tracks. Regardless, every song on this collection is a gem, but, in reality, nothing compares to the modern masterpieces she created with the emotional car wreck that is "Fast Car" and the touching, desperate love plea that is "Baby Can I Hold You." A wonderful collection, representing some of the finest work from one of the latter 20th century's most celebrated American artists. - cduniverse.com

ERIC CLAPTON [with various artists] - Clapton Is God: The Cream of Early Eric (2007)

The whole Clapton Is God thing back in the 1960s was a bit ridiculous and no doubt a source of embarrassment for Eric Clapton, but the fact remains that he was a dedicated blues enthusiast and a passionate guitar session player early in his career, as this handy two-disc set shows. Including a variety of early sides Clapton did with the likes of the Yardbirds, Sonny Boy Williamson, Otis Spann, Champion Jack Dupree, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Jimmy Page, Martha Velez, and Viv Stanshall, among others, this selection makes a nice way to see and hear Clapton's early guitar work before Cream and rock superstardom took over and changed everything.

2007 UK two CD set. Disc One features Eric as a Yardbird, live in the studio and backing Blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson. The 20 recordings on Disc Two [many of which are hard to find on CD] showcases Eric as a sessionman, a Blues Breaker, a member of the Immediate All-Stars and beyond. 40 tracks total. - amazon.com

CUBY & THE BLIZZARDS - Travelling With The Blues (1997)

Harry Muskee, frontman of the best known and oldest blues band of the Netherlands Cuby & the Blizzards died yesterday of cancer in his home. Rest in peace, Harry!

Cuby & The Blizzards (mostly referred to as C+B or Cuby + Blizzards) was the most important bluesgroup of the Netherlands in the sixties. They were popular throughout Europe. Cuby worked with John Mayal, Alexis Corner and Eddy Boyd, to name only a few. Cuby had a big following and made several records. Early '70's the band broke up. Cuby went his own way as blues&funksinger Harry Muskee. Although unknown to the English-speaking market, Cuby & the Blizzards have been one of Holland's top blues bands since the mid-'60s. Some of their early singles had a beat/punk orientation, particularly "Stumble & Fall" and "Your Body Not Your Soul," both of which would be reissued on various Dutch beat compilations a few decades later. They quickly settled into a straighter blues groove, however. Their claims to fame in the larger rock/pop world are that they briefly backed Van Morrison in the gap between his departure from Them and the beginning of his solo career, although details of the association remain murky; also, at one point lead guitarist Eelco Gelling was asked to join John Mayall's Bluebreakers, although he declined.

LOS LOBOTOMYS - Los Lobotomys (1989)

Los Lobotomys is an American fusion group, conceived by Toto-members Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro and keyboarder David Garfield. A range of well-known 'session cats' worked together with the core trio.

Anyhow Los Lobotomys is an occasional band by a bunch of musical friends in California, with Steve Lukather and David Garfield as core members. This eponymous record is recorded live on april 29th 1989 at the Complex, West Los Angeles, USA, and produced by David Garfield and Alan Hirshberg for Creatchy Productions. The songs are instrumentals which vary from relaxed slow and midtempo fusion to uptempo heavy rock, like Smell Yourself (in an in memoriam on Jeff Porcaro Vinnie Colaiuta recalled: "We had so much fun when I guested briefly on Los Lobotomys. Double-drumming with Jeff was one of the high points of my career and my life"). A comic one is Purple Haze that ends right after the intro, because nobody knows the lyrics (compare this one to the Red House version on the Lukather single cd Borrowed Time and the Los Lobotomys version of Candyman, where Lukather starts yelling because a string of his guitar snaps at the end of a solo).

01. Dismemberment (Lenny Castro, David Garfield)
02. Oozer (Carlos Vega, David Garfield)
03. Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)
04. Big Bone (Jeff Porcaro, David Garfield)
05. Jorainbo (Joe Sample, David Garfield)
06. Lobotomy Stew (Steve Lukather, David Garfield)
07. Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix)
08. Smell Yourself (Steve Lukather)
09. All Blues (Miles Davis)

TAMMY WYNETTE - Stand By Your Man [Legacy Edition] (1999)

This is the album that made Tammy Wynette more than a country star, it made her an icon. Not only was her singing wonderful (one of the best examples of true soulfulness without ever emulating black singers), but the controversy started by the title song would follow her all her life. Feminists seemed to take this song as advocating devotion to one's mate as a "my man, right or wrong" statement, to stick with a bum no matter what. (Never mind that the same year, Janis Joplin would have a huge hit with the downright masochistic "Piece of My Heart," which inspired no similar reaction.) Throughout this classic, digitally remastered edition, Wynette sings the stories of hearts and families, shattered by divorce and the difficulties of raising children as a single mother. She gave voice to the real lives of women everywhere, and did it passionately. With producer Billy Sherrill at the helm, the music is a somewhat softened version of the honky-tonk sound, smoother, more pop-oriented. The lyrics can be, by today's standards, a bit corny at times, but it's her voice-supple, strong, and dignified, that will stick with you. - cduniverse.com

TRACKS:
01. Stand By Your Man 02. It's My Way 03. Forever Yours 04. I Stayed Long Enough 05. It Keeps Slipping My Mind 06. My Arms Stay Open Late 07. I've Learned 08. Cry, Cry Again 09. Joey 10. If I Were A Little Girl 11. Don't Make Me Go To School 12. I'm Only A Woman 13. There's Quite A Difference

NIRVANA - Nevermind - Deluxe Edition - 20th Anniversary Album (2011)

Nirvana, the trio comprised of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl, hailed originally from a coastal fishing town in Washington and rose to become one of the most influential rock bands in history with irreverence, intense honesty and an overriding passion. The cultural shift Nirvana’s Nevermind initiated was felt instantly on release - and the profundity and depth of that shift becomes even more apparent when seen through the prism of the two decades of art and music created in its wake. Released in September of 1991, Nirvana’s Nevermind garnered near-unanimous praise and rose within a few months to the No. 1 slot on Billboard’s U.S. sales chart. Nevermind was propelled to No. 1 across the globe by their young fans worldwide that identified with the band and embraced their anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and its landmark music video. Since then, it has sold more than 30 million albums. Nirvana changed the course of popular music forever and remains an inspiration to those who have followed.

CHICKENFOOT

Chickenfoot is an American rock supergroup, consisting of former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar (vocals) and Michael Anthony (bass), solo artist Joe Satriani (guitar) and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. The band released their self-titled debut album, Chickenfoot, on June 5, 2009. Regarding the band's status as a "supergroup", vocalist Sammy Hagar states: "We’re not a supergroup, we like hanging out together and the music is a bonus. We just happen to be in other groups." While the band's name and logo reference a disparaging term used to describe the peace symbol, the "footprint of the chicken", bassist Michael Anthony asserts that the name originated from initial jam sessions between Hagar, Smith and himself: "there are three talons on a chicken’s foot and there [were] three of us."[3] Later Anthony stated: "it was just supposed to be a bullshit name that we’d used for a while, and then [when] the rumors spread about the band, everybody used that name so we thought, 'fuck it, let’s call it Chickenfoot' – it all comes down to the music anyway." - wikipedia

Chickenfoot, the rock supergroup featuring guitarist Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and former Van Halen members Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar, have finished work on a new album. Though it's only their second record together, the band have named the album Chickenfoot III. According to frontman Hagar, they went with the title because "it's so good, the songs are so tight, it's like we jumped right past having to make a second record."

ALBUM OF THE WEEK:

BETH HART & JOE BONAMASSA - Don't Explain (2011)

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Beth Hart, known for her raw and powerful blues-rock sound, wraps her expressive vocals around classic soul covers on Don’t Explain, an album that grew out of her friendship with the acclaimed Blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Produced by Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Country Communion), Don’t Explain is an intimate collection of hand-picked soul cover versions, as performed by celebrated artists, such as Gil Scott-Heron, Tom Waits, Etta James and Aretha Franklin. Don’t Explain perfectly combines Beth Hart’s raspy soulful vocal with Bonamassa’s unique guitar sound, Kevin Shirley, who has produced Bonamassa’s last five albums, reflects on what it was like working with Beth for the first time – “Beth’s got a pretty heady voice, very reminiscent of Janis Joplin, she’s also got a lot of Etta James in her, but hadn’t really accessed it. With this material, there is a gentleness to the way she delivers the most heartfelt tunes that she hasn’t shown before. It’s very cool, she’s done a fantastic job.”

01. Sinner's Prayer (Ray Charles w/ BB King)
02. Chocolate Jesus (Tom Waits)

Phenomena released three albums in the 1980s and early 1990s, and had a number one hit single in South America with "Did It All For Love", while the album charted across Europe, in Japan and Brazil. Simon Climie is a songwriter and the former lead singer of the 1980s, UK pop duo, Climie Fisher, but is now more well known for his work as a collaborator with Eric Clapton on albums such as Pilgrim, Reptile and Riding with the King.

Retail Therapy is a misguided, occasionally intriguing, venture into ambient, contemporary instrumental and even drum'n'bass territory by T.D.F. (Totally Dysfunctional Family), a side project for Eric Clapton and keyboardist Simon Climie. Both musicians sound as if they decided on the concept of the album before actually listening to any electronica, which gives Retail Therapy a weird, canned atmosphere. They also didn't sit down to write full-fledged compositions; they jammed, recording whatever came to their minds -- which means, of course, that the record is ambling where it should be provocative and meandering where it should be hypnotic. When the duo strays from atmospherics and works with the buzzing rhythms of drum'n'bass, they are more effective, but Retail Therapy remains a bland, colorless dead alley into electronic music from two musicians who don't comprehend its essence. ~ All Music Guide

PARSONS, THIBAUD - Parsons, Thibaud (2007)

Joseph Parsons & Todd Thibaud are established recording artists from the US who record and tour in Europe & the US. They got together to record an album of some released and some un-released tracks for the Blue Rose Record company.

Todd Thibaud didn't have a release since Northern Skies in 2004 and Joseph Parsons' The Fleury Sessions was released in summer 2006. They decided to go into the studio to record a new album featuring brand new songs plus a couple favorites from their previous records. Within 3 days they recorded a complete album with 10 songs like the yet unreleased "My Daddys Cadillac", "Dirty World", "The Right One" (Thibaud), "Tell Me Hello", "Skipping Stone" (Parsons) plus re-recordings of well-known tracks as "Good Or Bad", "Another Way Around" and "First Sight" by Joseph and "Unbroken" and "Johannas Dreams" from Todd Thibaud. The production is laid-back and sensitive, both Parsons and Thibaud are playing acoustic guitars. Thibaud is adding harmonica on a few songs, his Boston pals Jeff St. Pierre and Milt Sutton are playing bass and drums. Parsons Thibaud is an album their fans have been waiting for - it even turned out better than anyone has expected (including the musicians themselves).

NELSON, JENNINGS, KRISTOFFERSON, SHAVER, RHODES - Outlaw Country: Live From Austin, TX (2006)

Though the "outlaw" tag is a little tired at this late date, this 1996 recording from the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD) represents an appealing country tradition, the "guitar pull." Such intimate, informal, round-robin performances, whether in a club or somebody's living room, find songwriters taking turns sharing material, much of it new or previously unrecorded, for their mutual enjoyment. All of the artists gathered on this Austin soundstage (which might as well be their living room) are Texas treasures, and most are national legends. Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson teamed together in the Highwaymen (who frequently performed Nelson's "We Don't Run," which they reprise here). Nelson has long been a champion of Billy Joe Shaver's songwriting, while Jennings recorded an entire album of Shaver's songs. The angel-voiced Kimmie Rhodes sings one duet with Nelson and another song she wrote with Jennings. Acoustic guitars and impromptu harmonies abound, and there's never a setlist. Highlights are as funny as Jennings's "I'd Have Been Out of Jail" (basically a barroom tale leading to the title punch line) and as chilling as Shaver's a cappella "First and Last Time." After Jennings strikes a religious chord with "I Do Believe," Rhodes takes a spiritual turn with "Espiritu Santo Bay," Shaver responds with "You Can't Beat Jesus Christ," Nelson offers "Too Sick to Pray," and Kristofferson previews the then-new "Pilgrim's Progress." The performance ends with the best-known tune, Nelson's "On the Road Again," which becomes a collective celebration of the joys of "making music with my friends. - amazon.com

LESLIE WEST - Unusual Suspects (2011)

Leslie West isn't a particularly innovative guitarist, and his style and approach have barely moved an eyelash since he first broke into the public consciousness with Mountain back in the early '70s, but he gets a tone heavier than plutonium on his Les Paul, and when he sings, it's a gear-shredding roar that would make John Kay proud. All of this is still very much in evidence on his newest album, Unusual Suspects, which finds him squaring off with several guest guitarists, including Billy Gibbons, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Joe Bonamassa, and Steve Lukather. Naturally, there are guitar lines aplenty here, which is what one expects from a Leslie West outing, but this set also has the autumn-like feel of summation, with West looking back on years of gigs and guitar slinging in autobiographical songs like "To the Moon" and "My Gravity," both West originals (Jon Tiven was a co-writer on "My Gravity"), and a moving cover of Willie Nelson's "The Party's Over." West lost a leg to type 2 diabetes in June, and while that hasn't slowed him down one bit on Unusual Suspects, it no doubt prompted him to look back at his life and times with an unfiltered eye. When all is said and done, though, one expects West to rock, and he doesn't disappoint here, and song after song features his characteristically thick guitar tone, from the boisterous "Standing on Higher Ground" to the thunder of "Third Degree," and the presence of so many other guitar stars on this project never pushes West's playing to the sidelines. There are only a couple missteps. The version here of the Beatles' "I Feel Fine" never seems to quite settle into the crispness of the original, while the final bonus track, "I Don't Know (the Beetlejuice Song)," is simply a bad move that doesn't add anything to what went before, and actually serves to negate the tone and feel of the album. West has joked that he now needs to learn how to play guitar on one leg. Unusual Suspects sests he's doing just fine at it. - cduniverse.com

THE DUKE ROBILLARD BAND - Low Down and Tore Up (2011)

Like the blind men and the elephant, casual listeners can assume Robillard is all about jump blues, or jazz, or R&B, or whatever particular segment of his great love for blues-based forms they’ve happened to hear. This year, with the release of Low Down and Tore Up, Robillard is focusing on the hard-driving gutbucket blues styles of the mid-to-late 1950s, as exemplified by such greats as Guitar Slim, Eddie Taylor, Elmore James, Sugar Boy Crawford, and Pee Wee Crayton. Robillard covers material by each of these, and a few others. Duke Robillard is revered for his guitar skills and ability to work with a band to arrange old songs in exciting ways. His vocals are a potential sore point. He has a great grasp of blues phrasing, and he works in a sense of humor when appropriate, but over the course of 14 songs, his weaknesses do become apparent. He just doesn’t have enough vocal range, or produce quite enough nuance on the more serious songs, to make his singing match his playing. But, with playing this good, and a band this energized, and songs, most of them fairly unknown to all but the most ardent collectors, well worth hearing, Duke Robillard has added another enjoyable piece to his life-long musical puzzle. - blues.about.com

SUPERHEAVY - Superheavy (2011)

5 different artists... 5 different sounds... 1 super group (?)...

SuperHeavy is the collaborative efforts of 5 outstanding superstars, Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, AR Rahman and Damian "Jr Gong" Marley. Mick Jagger has teamed up with Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart, soul singer Joss Stone, Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack composer A.R. Rahman and reggae star Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley to form a band cooperative project called SuperHeavy. This diverse and eclectic line up who share eleven Grammy Awards between them, have been recording together in various studios around the world, with the majority of the tracks on the project laid down over three weeks in Los Angeles earlier this year. It's little wonder that Stewart refers to SuperHeavy as, "A mad alchemist type experiment". Fusing the talents of one of the greatest front-men of all time, a two time Academy award winning Indian composer, a soul vocal prodigy, a three time Grammy winning reggae star, and one of the most sought after producers in the world, you would expect the explosive results to defy categorisation. SuperHeavy came together after Jagger and Stewart considered what a band comprising of musicians from different genres would sound like. Jagger explains, "Dave really wanted to make a record with a different group of musicians, in other words, with different backgrounds of music. Instead of everyone being a rock musician, or basically a blues musician, or some other genre, he wanted to get as many genres together that would fit. I said it sounds like a good idea, I never thought it would actually happen."

01. Superheavy 02. Unbelievable 03. Miracle Worker 04. Energy 05. Satyamevajayathe 06. One Day One Night 07. Never Gonna Change 08. Beautiful People 09. Rock Me Gently 10. I Can't Take It No More 11. I Don't Mind 12. World Keeps Turning

THE JAYHAWKS - Mockingbird Time [Deluxe Edition] (2011)

With Mark Olson returning as co-leader of The Jayhawks after 16 years away, Mockingbird Time marks a long-awaited reunion for nostalgic fans. Its familiar noises are pleasing, too – though it’s hard to believe this was ever a band which made music that sounded new.

Long ago, The Jayhawks in their first flight seemed like a fine idea: loping country rock without frills, brotherly harmonies, a bar-band bluesy edge (especially in Gary Louris’ grinding guitar) and, above all, Olson’s throaty, plaintive tenor. In the early 90s this modest synthesis even sounded like it might be the way ahead. The austerity of indie pioneers like Cowboy Junkies had swept away the Eagles generation, and The Jayhawks looked ready to bring an edgier sort of country into the mainstream. When the breakthrough never happened, they split. Olson stretched out in a rootsy meander with the Original Harmony Ridge Creekdippers, while Louris’ stewardship of The Jayhawks slid increasingly towards 60s pop mannerisms and airy philosophising. There must be worse fates than ending up as a classic pop jukebox, and there’s excitement as well as devotion in all this archaeology. Looking backwards, after all, The Jayhawks are working with a much broader palette than in their days of early promise. They sound like they’re having fun. And in the more oblique moments – generally the ones that Olson makes his own, like the slight but melodically angular title-track, or the fiddle-heavy folk rock of Black-Eyed Susan – there is an understated, nostalgic reminder of a distinctive voice. - bbc.co.uk

TONY BENNETT - Duets (2006 / 2011)

2006 - Duets
At this point, who else but Tony Bennett would have the clout to round up stars on the scale of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bono, Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand for some duets? The material consists of relatively obvious classics in standard big-band arrangements, and Bennett himself is in top form at age 80, so much so that he doesn't need anybody else to handle "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." But the fun comes from checking out how his collaborators fare. The Dixie Chicks provide wonderful Andrews Sisters–type harmonies on the percolating version of "Lullaby of Broadway" that opens the festivities. The best songs tend to be the ones where Bennett's slightly craggy voice is juxtaposed to smooth female ones, like Diana Krall on "The Best Is Yet to Come," familiar accomplice k.d. lang on the sultry "Because of You" and Streisand—-perhaps Bennett's only equal in stature at this point—on "Smile." Among the less expected guests, soulman John Legend is a revelation on the hard-swinging "Sing, You Sinners," while George Michael confirms he’s quite the crooner on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" Elvis Costello, Celine Dion or Juanes don't sound as comfortable, and sometimes it feels as if they overdo it to compensate, but overall this collection is among the best of its kind, with most guests rising to the occasion. - amazon.com

2011 - Duets II
2011 release from the legendary crooner. Duets II is the follow-up to Tony Bennett's multi-platinum CD, Duets, which was released in conjunction with Tony's 80th birthday in 2006. Duets won three Grammy Awards and was the singer's best selling album to date. Now the legendary performer celebrates a milestone 85th birthday with the release of Duets II. HANS THEESSINK - Jedermann Remixed: The Soundtrack (2011)

Dutch morality play Elckerlyc was written in the late 15th-century and may well have been the original source for the English play Everyman. In 1911 Hugo von Hofmannsthal adapted Everyman as Jedermann, and since 1920 Jedermann has been performed every year on the steps of the Cathedral in Salzburg as part of the Salzburger Festspiele. The open-air performances have been one of the highlights of the Festival season ever since. In 2011 the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ORF commissioned film director Hannes Rossacher to produce the film "Jedermann Remixed" to commemorate the success-story of 90 years Jedermann phenomenon in Salzburg. Rossacher used archive footage from 9 decades to put together a cultural historic puzzle and create a unique performance of Jedermann that has not been seen in this form before. ORF and Hannes Rossacher commissioned Hans to produce the soundtrack for the film and select the songs that would fit the themes and scenes. Besides several Theessink originals there are songs by many legendary songwriters: from Bo Diddley to Tom Waits, Hank Williams to Ray Charles, Johnny Cash to Rolling Stones Jagger/Richards along with some traditional songs that have been handed down through time. - amazon.com

STEVE HACKETT - Live Rails (2011)

Steve Hackett has earned the reputation of being one of Britain's finest composers and guitarists. Peter Gabriel invited him to join Genesis in 1970 and his involvement led to 8 albums. His complex and distinctive playing contributed heavily to their early success, developing an elegance and sophistication which have become his trademark and he has since achieved consistent solo success internationally.

This two-disc live set finds Hackett and his accomplished band in fine form. Much of the music is from his extensive solo career and, of course, is from his most recent studio album. A most notable and exquisite piece is Every Day (Spectral Mornings) which reaches back better than 30 years for a real Hackett classic. Other gems include the three closing songs Slogans, Serpentine, and Tubehead. The second disc may trump the former, especially if you're a Genesis fan, as it includes the essential Firth of Fifth (Selling England by the Pound), Blood on the Rooftops (Wind & Wuthering), and two from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Fly on a Windshield and Broadway Melody of 1974. It's a crisp and classic history lesson, but also essential Hackett. These are superb performances.

DISC 1:
01. Intro 02. Every Day 03. Fire On The Moon 04. Emerald And Ash 05. Ghost In The Glass 06. Ace Of Wands 07. Pollution C 08. The Steppes 09. Slogans 10. Serpentine 11. Tubehead

DISC 2: 01. Spectral Mornings 02. Firth Of Fifth 03. Blood On The Rooftops 04. Fly On A Windshield 05. Broadway Melody of 1974 06. Sleepers 07. Still Waters 08. Los Endos 09. Clocks

WYNTON MARSALIS & ERIC CLAPTON - Play the Blues: Live From Jazz At Lincoln Center (2011)

Wynton Marsalis says he wanted last April's Lincoln Centre blues collaborations with Eric Clapton "to sound like people playing music they know and love, not like a project". Marsalis knew all too well that such a meeting could sound like a opportunistic marketing ploy. In the event, he gave the English guitarist an ideal setting in which to experiment with jazz by touching the nerve that connects many British blues-rockers of Clapton's generation to the trad-jazz and bluesy skiffle movement of the 1950s. Set to the eloquent polyphony of an early 20th-century New Orleans jazz band, classics such as Careless Love and Just a Closer Walk With Thee (the latter also featuring a rasping Taj Mahal) join bluesy road songs such as Joliet Bound, a New Orleans swing account of Louis Armstrong's Ice Cream and a boogieing Kidman Blues. Clapton's own Layla gets a slow-dirge treatment over solemn drums, the guitarist's canny links and fills throughout the set are often more absorbing than his solos. Meanwhile, the graceful improv inventiveness of Marsalis and his inspired clarinetist Victor Goines make almost all their interventions and ensemble contributions a delight. These are not heart-wrenching blues performances, but they're very happily executed and devoted ones. - guardian.co.uk

01. Ice Cream – Howard Johnson/Robert King/Billy Moll
02. Forty-Four – Chester Burnett/Howlin’ Wolf
03. Joe Turner’s Blues – W.C. Handy
04. The Last Time – Bill Ewing/Sara Martin

ALBUM OF THE WEEK:

RY COODER - Pull Up Some Dust And Sit Down (2011)

After completing his epic California Trilogy, with its stories of life in his home state in the 40s and 50s, Ry Cooder returns with a solo project that is as refreshing, brave and original as his early recordings in the 70s. This time round there are no elaborate narratives, but there is a common theme: these are songs of a broken, divided society and the gap between rich and poor, but with the anger matched against humour. He's a master at setting bleak or thoughtful lyrics against jaunty melodies. No Banker Left Behind is the story of bankers on a spree after they "robbed the nation blind", set to a romping, country-edged tune, while Christmas Time This Year places a horrific story of war casualties against a cheerful Mexican dance melody, with accordion from Flaco Jiménez. Cooder plays guitar, mandola, banjo, bass and keyboards, and constantly changes direction from the evocative portrait of a rich man and his maid in Dirty Chateau to the gospel-edged stomp of Lord Tell Me Why ("a white man ain't worth nothing in this land no more"), which is quickly followed by the witty blues of John Lee Hooker for President. He ends with No Hard Feelings, a finely sung ballad that first rewrites Woody Guthrie ("this land should have been our land") and ends in despair and resignation. Magnificent. - guardian.co.uk

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - Winterland (2011)

Long time fans of the Jimi Hendrix Experience have a real gift coming in a couple of weeks. On September 13, Experience Hendrix LLC and Legacy Recordings is releasing a four disc box set of live performances recorded during six shows, two each night, at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom from October 10-12, 1968. The concerts, also available in a Vinyl Audiophile LP Deluxe Box Set and a single Highlights CD, originally celebrated the two year anniversary of the Experience. The set features live versions of previously unreleased classics as well as a backstage interview with Hendrix recorded at the Boston Garden shortly after the Winterland concerts. It will also include a 36 page booklet with an essay by Rolling Stone's David Fricke and previously unreleased photos. All told it adds up to a Hendrix cornucopia bound to light up the eyes of all Jimi aficionados. JJ GREY AND MOFRO - Brighter Days (2011)

Over the past half-decade or so, Florida-born roots-and-blues artist JJ Grey and his band Mofro have quietly built an international following by touring constantly anywhere that would have them, which includes Europe (JJ is HUGE in England!), and the southern parts of Asia (Japan, Australia) as well as the U.S. and Canada. While albums like Georgia Warhorse and Orange Blossoms have earned the singer, songwriter, and guitarist much critical acclaim, it's Grey's dynamic live performances that have brought in the fans. JJ Grey's sound has been described as "front porch soul," a unique and exciting blend of roots-rock, blues, soul, funk, and country music that is as influenced by Otis Redding as it is by Lynyrd Skynyrd. With Brighter Days, Grey goes a long way towards bringing his live show home to the fans.

DON AIREY

Don Airey is best known for his work on the recordings of a Who's Who of rock - Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Judas Priest, Gary Moore, Ozzy Osbourne, Rainbow, and Whitesnake, just to name a few - as well as having spent most of the past decade with Deep Purple, but he has also found time to pursue projects of his own, ranging from such diverse things as the album of Police covers with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Classic Police), to his previous solo record, the progressive rock gem K2: Tales Of Triumph & Tragedy. Twenty years later, he's finally released another, "A Light In The Sky". This time around, he's presenting a cross-section of styles from his career, from the progressive rock of K2, through the radio-friendly rock ballads of Rainbow, to the power rock of Deep Purple. Throughout it all, it seems that the primary focus was simply to have fun, and that comes through in the music - never forced, always authentic, songs played simply because the musicians enjoyed playing them. Now on Mascot Records, home to a number of musician's musicians, Don Airey has gathered a supporting cast from different backgrounds and influences, and synthesized their talents into a whole. These include Laurence Cottle and Chris Childs on bass, Darrin Mooney and Harry James on drums, Rob Harris on guitar, and classical violinist Lidia Baich rounding out the instrumental section. Vocals are ably provided by Carl Sentance for the most part, with Danny Bowes taking one song as well.

BOBBY CHARLES - Bobby Charles (1972) [Rhino, 2011] thumbupthumbupthumbup

Bobby Charles was an American singer-songwriter. Charles helped to pioneer the south Louisiana musical genre known as swamp pop. His compositions include the hits "See You Later, Alligator", which he initially recorded himself as "Later Alligator", but which is best known from the cover version by Bill Haley & His Comets; and "Walking to New Orleans", written for Fats Domino. His songwriting record in the UK charts reads 7 hits, 3 top tens with 75 weeks spent on the chart.

Disc One of this 3-CD set has been expanded by eight additional tracks, including the mono single of “Small Town Talk,” the single edit of “Save Me, Jesus” and an extended version of “Whiskey.” They’re followed by three songs first aired on the Japan-only Bearsville Box (Pony Canyon 727, 1996): “New Mexico,” “Homemade Songs” and “Rosie.” Two further outtakes, “Don’t Be Surprised” and “You Were There,” round out the first disc (along with a brief hidden track). Rick Danko’s high harmony lends his co-written track “New Mexico” a rustic feel, and “Homemade Songs” is a slow-burning, country-and-western delight with that genre’s most familiar lyrical themes explored: “I only know one thing for certain/That I’ve been down so long/I’m hurtin’.” Similar ground is covered on “You Were There,” another altogether sweet song: “You picked me up when I was down/You helped me find my way around…You brought me sunshine when all I had was rain.” Keith’s pedal steel and dobro add the requisite country flourishes. The lovably ragged “Homemade Songs” reappears on Disc 2 in a longer version, along with the first attempt at “Whiskey” and a demo of “New Mexico” in variable sound quality. There’s one more outtake from the original LP, “Done a Lot of Wrong Things,” with Charles’ arresting candor: “But that’s all right…because I had fun!” The main attraction of the second disc, however, is the inclusion of thirteen never-before-released tracks cut in November and December 1974 with producer Paul Rothchild (Janis Joplin, The Doors) for a second Bearsville LP that never materialized. Though musician credits are all but non-existent for these tracks, it’s believed that Dr. John and Paul Butterfield contributed to the sessions. Charles had actually toured with Butterfield’s band, though not as a musician. Rather he still saw himself as a song pler, using each tour stop to pitch his songs to local recording artists! The third and final disc of Bobby Charles features 30 minutes of an interview with the singer/songwriter conducted by Barry Hansen, the future Dr. Demento.

V.A. - Chess Rhythm & Roll (1994)

In addition to being one of the world's premier blues imprints, Chicago-based Chess Records presented some of rock & roll's earliest participants. Chess Rhythm & Roll (1994) is a five-plus hour celebration of essential proto-rockers cut between 1947 and 1967. The four-CD assemblage is a companion to the Chess Blues (1992) box set and picks up during the label's formative days when their repertoire was expanding to a greater audience beyond the realm of R&B. Boasting a total of 99 selections, this collection far exceeds your average "oldies" package, charting the course from ensembles including the jumpin' and jivin' Five Blazes - whose "Chicago Boogie" commences the festivities - to the plethora of talent who fused their own unique performance styles to create the foundation of practically every note of popular music that followed. It goes without saying that prolific pioneers Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry have significant spin time. However, it is the attention given to lesser-known artists and "one-hit wonders" that makes the anthology required listening for enthusiasts of all stripes and respective tastes. While the track list tells the story completely and perhaps more succinctly, it only intimates the impact of platters such as Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88," Willie Mabon's "I Don't Know," Sugar Boy Crawford's "Jock-A-Mo," the Moonglows' "Sincerely," Clarence "Frogman" Henry's "Ain't Got No Home," Clifton Chenier's "The Big Wheel," Dale Hawkins' "Suzie-Q," the Monotones' "Book of Love," Tommy Tucker's "High Heel Sneakers" and scores of others found here. Before the artists made names for themselves on Atlantic Records, Chess likewise introduced listeners to Eddie Floyd and Sir Mack Rice, who were bandmates in the Falcons ("This Heart of Mine"), not to mention future Motown superstars Smokey Robinson & the Miracles ("All I Want Is You") and the Four Tops ("Country Girl") -- all of whom got their start on Chess. Slipped in among the classics are no less than 39 rarities, 14 of which are debuted in this omnibus. The sonics are superior, as is the accompanying 64-page booklet, housing reams of photos as well as thorough credits and fact-filled song-by-song annotations. To call Chess Rhythm & Roll essential is an understatement by any measure of the word.

GLEN CAMPBELL - Ghost On The Canvas (2011)

Back in the early ’00s, there was a brief and odd resurgence for old country singers. It became the cool thing for legends to release new albums, consisting entirely of rock covers, to try and tap into a new, younger fan base. Johnny Cash, perhaps, did it best by teaming with super producer Rick Rubin on the American Recordings collection. Pat Boone also joined in with a country covers album of heavy metal tunes. Glen Campbell did the same, much later, with the under-appreciated Meet Glen Campbell in 2008. The album consisted of covers from bands like Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Lou Reed. Unlike the grittiness of Cash’s work and the kitsch factor of Boone, Campbell was comfortable in the pop songs and created lush-yet-country versions of the tracks. Now in 2011, Campbell is back with Ghost on the Canvas, a companion to the previous album, but this time all the songs are original.

During his 50 years in show business, Campbell has sold 45 million records with hits like "Witchita Lineman, " "Gentle On My Mind, " "Rhinestone Cowboy, " and tons more. Ghost On The Canvas is his "farewell album, " a deep, meaningful look back at his career/life with contributions by the artists he continues to inspire. We're proud to be an integral part of the legendary Glen Campbell s final studio album featuring collaborations with Jakob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, Chris Isaak, Bob Pollard (Guided by Voices), Dick Dale, and Billy Corgan, among others. - amazon.com

BETTE MIDLER - The Best Bette [Deluxe Edition] (2009)

Another classic album from the Divine Miss M. Bette Midler has always been one to mix up her repotoir a bit, and record different styles such as ballads, rock and roll, boogie woogie and even Disney. It's this collection that heaves all these styles together on one volume. Like her other Greatest Hits albums, released in 1993, and again later on in 1996, The Best Bette has the Bette Midler standards the world knows and loves her for (Wind Beneath My Wings, The Rose and From a Distance). The album also contains other Bette standards from her earlier career (From The Divine Miss M : Hello in There, Do You Wanna Dance?, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and Friends)which she still performs today. There is also a rare, never released track witten by the great lady herself , "Something Your Heart Has Been Telling Me". My only problem is that I think more songs could have been included, such as "To Deserve You" from Bette of Roses and "Favourite Waste of Time" from No Frills, which both appeared on the 1996 release of Experience The Divine. But all in all, a great collection of one of the greatest artists on earth, and a BEST BETTE for any fan of Bette, or just great music in general. - amazon.com

TRACKS:
01. In The Mood 02. This Ole House 03. Beast of Burden 04. Just My Imagination (Running Away From Me) 05. The Rose 06. When A Man Loves A Woman 07. I've Still Got My Health 08. Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most 09. Hello In There 10. The Glory Of Love 11. Tenderly 12. Wind Beneath My Wings 13. Do You Want To Dance 14. Baby Mine 15. From A Distance 16. Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (single version) 17. Friends 18. Something Your Heart Has Been Telling Me 19. Cool Yule 20. Miss Otis Regrets 21. To Deserve You (Arif's dance radio mix) 22. In My Life

DOLLY PARTON - Better Day (2011)

Forty-four years as a recording artist have not diminished Parton's sass. From her folksy, half-spoken welcome on the bluesy "Better Day" ("You gotta keep the faith, 'cause I believe there's a better day") to the jaunty, if moralising, hoedown of "In the Meantime", studio album number 41 is turbo-powered by her trademark can-do spirit and feelgood key changes. The indomitable optimism can get a bit much – on "Together You and I" she actually exhorts the listener to "paint a pretty rainbow brushed with love across the sky". But because it's Dolly, she just about gets away with it.

Better Day is the 41st studio album by American country recording artist Dolly Parton. It was released on June 28, 2011, as the second album from her Dolly Records label.

TRACKS:
01. In The Meantime 02. Just Leavin' 03. Somebody's Missing You 04. Together You And I 05. Country Is As Country Does 06. Holding Everything 07. The Sacrifice 08. I Just Might 09. Better Day 10. Shine Like The Sun 11. Get Out And Stay Out 12. Let Love Grow

Post of the week:

AL KOOPER - Solo discography ('60 & '70)

Al Kooper is an American songwriter, record producer and musician, known for organizing Blood, Sweat & Tears (although he did not stay with the group long enough to share its popularity), providing studio support for Bob Dylan when he went electric in 1965, and also bringing together guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills to record the Super Session album. He has had a successful solo career since then, written music for film soundtracks, and has also lectured in musical composition. He continues to perform live to this day.

His first musical success was as a fourteen-year-old guitarist in The Royal Teens, best known for their novelty twelve-bar blues riff, "Short Shorts". In 1960, he joined the songwriting team of Bob Brass and Irwin Levine, and wrote "This Diamond Ring", which became a hit for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. When he was twenty-one, Kooper moved to Greenwich Village. He performed with Bob Dylan in concert in 1965, and in the recording studio in 1965 and 1966, including playing Hammond organ with Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Kooper also played the Hammond organ riffs on Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone. It was in those recording sessions that Kooper met and befriended Mike Bloomfield, whose guitar-playing he admired. He worked extensively with Bloomfield for a number of years. Kooper played organ once again with Dylan during his 1981 world tour. Kooper joined The Blues Project as their keyboardist in 1965, leaving the band shortly before their gig at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. He formed Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1967, leaving after the group's first album, Child Is Father to the Man, due to creative differences in 1968. He recorded Super Session with Bloomfield and Stills in 1968 as well, and in 1969 he collaborated with 15-year-old guitarist Shie Otis on the album Kooper Session. In 1975 he produced the debut album by The Tubes.

Kooper played on hundreds of records, including those by The Rolling Stones, B. B. King, The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Alice Cooper, and Cream. On occasion, he has even overdubbed on his own efforts, as on The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper and on other albums, as "Roosevelt Gook". After moving to Atlanta in 1972, he discovered the band Lynyrd Skynyrd, and produced and performed on their first three albums, including the single "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". Kooper also wrote the score for the TV series Crime Story and the film The Landlord and has also written music for several made-for-television movies. He was also the musical force behind many of the children series "Banana Splits" pop tunes, including "You're the Lovin' End."

Album of the week:

CHRIS REA - Santo Spirito Blues [Deluxe Edition] (2011)

Chris Rea, one of the UK's foremost singer-songwriters returns with his first new material in over ten years. The elaborate three-CD and two-DVD The Santo Spirito Project will include a brand new studio album, featuring "Dancing My Blues Away", "Never Tie Me Down", "The Chance Of Love", "Rock & Roll Tonight", "Electric Guitar" and "The Last Open Road". Additionally, The Santo Spirito Project features two bespoke feature films on DVD, written and directed by Chris. The first feature is a raw and brutally honest chronicle on bullfighting, featuring neo-classical and Spanish-themed gypsy music. The second feature follows a man on a search for the truth in the city of Florence, a journey he may or may not wish he began. The music to accompany both films will be contained on two CDs. Here, Chris explains his rationale for such an ambitious project: "I love creating things and passionately believe artists should be looking to try new ways of bringing what we do to the public. There should be no rules whatsoever and, for God's sake, there are alternatives to TV talent shows. Sometimes, those who have had extremely good fortune in music allow only X Factor type TV shows to set the musical and cultural agenda of this country by actually doing nothing new or different themselves."

2011 album from the veteran British singer, songwriter and guitarist, his first album of new material in over 10 years. This stripped back studio album features 'Dancing My Blues Away', 'Never Tie Me Down', 'The Chance Of Love', 'Rock & Roll Tonight' and more. Rhino. - cduniverse.com

QUEEN - Deep Cuts 1, 2, & 3 (2011)

Queen never set out to be a singles band - which is strange considering that their Greatest Hits compilation is the biggest selling album of all time in the UK. Queen were an albums band. It was only after an album was complete that they would cherry-pick three or four songs they thought represented the album best, and might attract radio play – i.e. the most commercial – for use as singles. As a result, there are so many fantastic Queen songs which never managed to reach the audience they deserved. Thise ‘Deep Cuts’ albums are long overdue. It’s a chance for the casual listener to hear some of the very best of Queen – and some of these songs really are among the finest songs Queen ever recorded. So forget the radio-friendly Queen - put that to one side - open your mind, and listen to real Queen.

JOHNNY NICHOLAS - Thrill On The Hill (1994) thumbup

In 1980, after twenty years of the blues scenes of Providence, Detroit-Ann Arbor, Chicago, the Bay Area, the Cajun country of Louisiana, and Texas - performing with Duke Robillard, Steve Nordella, Big Walter Horton, Asleep At The Wheel and Johnny Shine (Nicholas played on and produced the late Johnny Shine's last album with Snooky Pryor), Johnny Moved to the Hill Country outside Austin and opened the Hilltop Cafe, inconveniently located in the middle of nowhere (10 miles north of Fredericksburg, Texas) Until 1991, that was the only way you could hear Nicholas on any recording. Then in 1994, Antones released his CD Thrill On The Hill, a live CD which brought him again to the forefront of the world blues scene. By popular demand, TopCat Records is re-releasing this gem with 4 great bonus tracks from the original sessions. Thrill on the Hill was recorded live on location, direct to two track at the Hilltop Café. Thrill on the Hill was performed with cronies Jack Barber on bass, C.C. Pinkston on drums, Floyd Domino and Ernie Bowser alternating on piano and producer Stephen Bruton sitting in on several instruments. Johnny Nicholas plays guitar, harp, mandolin and keyboards. Nicholas forges a lean, slicing attack held in place by a bedrock-firm bottom reminiscent of the early Chess sessions. Every fan of Johnny's and the "real stuff" will be thrilled to add this new Topcat release to their collection. This CD is proof of Johnny Nicholas' blues acumen and is a joy to listen to. Without a doubt, this CD is a testament to the fact that Johnny is back in force. - cdbaby.com

BONNIE RAITT - Original Album Series (Rhino, 2011)

Long a critic's darling, singer/guitarist Bonnie Raitt did not begin to win the comparable commercial success due her until the release of the aptly titled 1989 blockbuster Nick of Time; her tenth album, it rocketed her into the mainstream consciousness nearly two decades after she first committed her unique blend of blues, rock, and R&B to vinyl. Born in Burbank, CA, on November 8, 1949, she was the daughter of Broadway star John Raitt, best known for his starring performances in such smashes as Carousel and Pajama Game. After picking up the guitar at the age of 12, Raitt felt an immediate affinity for the blues, and although she went off to attend Radcliffe in 1967, within two years she had dropped out to begin playing the Boston folk and blues club circuit. Signing with noted blues manager Dick Waterman, she was soon performing alongside the likes of idols including Howlin' Wolf, Sippie Wallace, and Mississippi Fred McDowell and in time earned such a strong reputation that she was signed to Warner Bros.

Debuting in 1971 with an eponymously titled effort, Raitt immediately emerged as a critical favorite, applauded not only for her soulful vocals and thoughtful song selection but also for her guitar prowess, turning heads as one of the few women to play bottleneck. Her 1972 follow-up, Give It Up, made better use of her eclectic tastes, featuring material by contemporaries like Jackson Browne and Eric Kaz, in addition to a number of R&B chestnuts and even three Raitt originals. 1973's Takin' My Time was much acclaimed, and throughout the middle of the decade she released an LP annually, returning with Streetlights in 1974 and Home Plate a year later. With 1977's Sweet Forgiveness, Raitt scored her first significant pop airplay with her hit cover of the Del Shannon classic "Runaway"; its follow-up, 1979's The Glow, appeared around the same time as a massive all-star anti-nuclear concert at Madison Square Garden mounted by MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy), an organization she'd co-founded earlier. - allmusic.com

THE PRETTY THINGS - Unrepentant [Bloody But Unbowed]: The Anthology (Limited Edition, 1995)

Of all the original British Invasion groups, perhaps none are as underappreciated in the United States as the Pretty Things. Featuring the hoarse vocals of Mick Jagger-lookalike Phil May and the stinging leads of guitarist Dick Taylor (who actually played in early versions of the Rolling Stones with Jagger and Keith Richards), the Pretties recorded a clutch of raunchy R&B rockers in the mid-'60s that offer a punkier, rawer version of the early Stones sound. Their first two albums, as well as a brace of fine major and minor British hits (of which "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Honey I Need" were the biggest), feature first-rate original material and covers, and remain the group's most exciting and influential recordings. Unfortunately, the band remained virtually unknown to American audiences, most of whom would first hear "Don't Bring Me Down" on David Bowie's Pin Ups album (which also included a version of the Pretties' "Rosalyn").

After their initial run of success, the group took a sharp left turn into psychedelia with the orchestrated album Emotions (1967), impressive singles that owed more to Pink Floyd than Bo Diddley, and, most significantly, S.F. Sorrow (1968). The first rock opera, S.F. Sorrow was a major influence on Pete Townshend, who released his much more successful opera, Tommy, with the Who the following year. Founding member Taylor left shortly after S.F. Sorrow, and the group continued to record progressive rock and hard rock with less impressive results through the mid-'70s, although Parachute (1970) was named Album of the Year by Rolling Stone. The group reunited sporadically for occasional gigs and recordings in their early R&B vein before officially re-forming to release Rage...Before Beauty in 1999 and Balboa Island eight years later.

COLOSSEUM - The Grass Is Greener (1970) [Remastered 2011]

The second album from this British jazz-rock quintet rocks harder than their first outing. Their take on Jack Bruce's "Rope Ladder to the Moon" is especially strong, and "Jumping off the Sun" has a similar feel. "Bolero" has been done to death, but guitarist Dave Clempson (who later replaced Peter Frampton in Humble Pie) uses it to launch a showcase of guitar fireworks. In fact, Clempson's blazing guitar licks shine throughout. Dick Heckstall-Smith once again impresses on his arsenal of saxophones and woodwinds, and the seven-and-a-half minute title cut which he co-wrote with drummer Jon Hiseman is a highlight of this disc.

Digitally remastered edition of this 1970 album from one of the pivotal Progressive bands that emerged in the second part of the '60s. One of the most influential of the early British Prog Rock bands, Colosseum fused an adventurous approach to Rock with strong Jazz and Blues influences and classical keyboard accents. In contrast to other albums by Colosseum, The Grass Is Greener was released only in the United States. It includes a few songs that were on the earlier release, Valentyne Suite, as well as several cuts only released on this album. Talking Elephant. - cduniverse.com

CAROLYN MARK AND THE ROOM-MATES - Terrible Hostess (2002)

In the self-penned press release accompanying her superb second album, Terrible Hostess, Carolyn Mark self-deprecatingly dubs herself "The Other Girl in the Corn Sisters," and while it's true she's never earned the notice or acclaim justly heaped on duet partner Neko Case, it's time people started paying closer attention. Mark's songs are boozy and brassy, and her voice sests a tough, salt-of-the-earth Natalie Merchant - moving deftly from the Red Bull-and-vodka bluegrass of the opening "Fuzzy Slippers" to the juke-joint torch balladry of "Inevitable," Terrible Hostess is both rooted in traditional country & western and a repudiation thereof, smarter and saucier than anything to come out of Nashville in eons. - cduniverse.com

TRACKS:
01. Fuzzy Slippers 02. Chumpville 03. Gopherville 04. After Bar Party 05. Terrible Hostess 06. Dirty Little Secret 07. Inevitable 08. Catscan 09. Port Moody 10. Country in the City

TRACY NELSON - Live From Cell Block D (2003)

Country-gospel-blues singer Tracy Nelson takes a cue from Johnny Cash and B.B. King by heading to prison to record her first live album. Few singers belt out songs with as much husky power and gutsy intensity as Nelson, and the surroundings lend themselves to performances of Memphis Slim's "Mother Earth" and Big Bill Broonzy's "I Feel So Good" that rank with her most impassioned work. A full band, including horns and a female backing vocalist, churns up exciting arrangements, and everyone seems to have been inspired by the audiences at these shows. Recorded in front of two separate crowds divided by gender, the enthusiastic response pushes Nelson and her band to superb heights. - cduniverse.com

Recorded live at the West Tennessee Detention Center 12/20/2002.

ELLIOT MURPHY - Murphy Gets Muddy (2005)

More then thirty-five years have passed since the release of Elliott Murphy's ground-breaking first album Aquashow in 1973 (recently declared an Album Classic by the UK's prestigious UNCUT magazine) and since that time Elliott Murphy, singer-songwriter, rock troubadour, indefatigable road warrior (over 100 shows a year!) and prolific author of fiction has once again proven his dedication to his music and his commitment to his growing legion of fans with the release of his new CD Notes From the Underground featuring eleven new Elliott Murphy songs (five of which are co-written with long-time guitarist Olivier Durand. The album is already being hailed as his best in a decade. Aside from Elliott’s French guitarist extraordinaire Olivier Durand Notes From the Underground features keyboardist Kenny Margolis (Willie Deville, Cracker) and Murphy's touring band of drummer Alan Fatras and bassist Laurent Pardo as well as Elliott's son Gaspard on guitar on featured track "Frankenstein's Daughter". Born to a show business family in New York, Elliott began his career by winning the New York State Battle of the Bands in 1966 followed by a troubadour like odyssey in Europe where he played on the streets in Amsterdam, Paris and Rome including a bit part in Federico Fellini's film Roma. Returning to the US he quickly secured a recording contract and following the critical success of Aquashow came in quick succession Lost Generation (Produced by Doors producer Paul Rothschild), Night Lights (featuring Billy Joel), Just A Story From America (featuring Phil Collins and Mick Taylor) and many others albums. Highlights from recent albums include an extraordinary duet with Bruce Springsteen ("Selling The Gold") who often invites Elliott on stage with him during his European tours. - All Music Guide

JEAN-JACQUES MILTEAU - Blues Harp (1989) [2011 Reissue]

Born in Paris in 1950, blues harmonica player Jean Jacques Milteau first discovered the harmonica in the mid-'60s while listening to rock albums by artists such as Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. A heavy interest in the blues ensued and, later on a trip to America, Milteau became enthralled with the traditional blues of artists such as Little Walter, Charlie McCoy, and others. In the late '70s, Milteau decided to devote his entire career to performing music and began making various gigs around Paris, performing with such high-profile artists as Charles Aznavour, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Yves Montand, and others. It wasn't until 1989 though that Milteau released his solo debut, Blues Harp. Since then, Milteau added writing to his resumé, including various harmonica method books, and released his share of albums in Europe and toured extensively. Milteau released the Tennessee-recorded Memphis in 2003.

THE JEFF HEALEY BAND - Live At Grossman's 1994 (2011) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

"Live At Grossmans 1994" is the first release in a new series from Eagle Records and Eagle Vision taken from the Jeff Healey Band's archives. This CD release was recorded at Grossmans Tavern in Toronto on the 22nd and 23rd of April, 1994. The Jeff Healey Band were at the height of their success, especially in their native Canada where they had registered a string of 10 hit singles between 1990 and 1994. Blind from when he was just a few months old due to a rare inherited form of cancer, Jeff Healey developed a unique style of guitar playing with the instrument flat across his lap that in turn gave him an instantly recognizable style and sound. He died from further cancer problems in 2008 at the tragically early age of 41.

TRACY NELSON - Home Made Songs & Come See About Me (1992)

Tracy Nelson really came into her own as a solo artist with these two LP's (now combined on one CD) in the late seventies and early eighties. Previous efforts on Atlantic and MCA were fine in their way but a bit strained. Here she sounds comfortable and strong. Apparently Flying Fish gave her the leeway that the bigger labels did not. What I didn't realize at the time was that after these efforts and a subsequent Direct-to-Disc release (Doin' It My Way -- words that Tracy lives by from what I know about her)she would virtually disappear for over a decade. That made these releases all the more valuable to me. The albums reflect her blues, country and folk influences. But most of all they present Tracy Nelson at her vocal best--strong, clear, emotionally rich singing that will make people who have never heard her wonder why she's not a superstar. (Answer--at least in part: she's not interested in being one). It's hard to recommend any one TN release, but this one is a certainly a good intro. - amazon.com
