BIG DADDY WILSON thumbup

Champion Jack Dupree, Louisiana Red, Eddie Boyd... many musicians who made Europe their home and brought the blues with them succeeded here better than in the U.S. Even Luther Allison lived in Europe for 14 years before his big break. And now there´s Big Daddy Wilson, an American singer and songwriter who found his home in northern Germany.

After the positive responds and success of the "Love Is The Key" CD and the "Love Is The Key Tour" the mission was simple and clear to me, to use this platform to spread love everywhere I go. The goal was to produce a fully acoustic CD, using the guys that I am on the road with "The Big Daddy Wilson Trio". Singing and playing the songs that my forefathers played. Using this special gift that "The Almighty" gave me. I am very proud and happy to say that all songs on this CD are composed by the "Big Daddy Wilson Trio". And that is why I call this one "Thumb A Ride", cause it is all about the journey. Now, "After all is said and done, more is always said than done" let us do this. Feel me! - Big Daddy Wilson

PORTUGAL. THE MAN - In The Mountain In The Cloud (2011)

Portugal. The Man hasn’t sold out. Sure, they’ve signed with a major label. But if the new record is any indication of what that means for the Alaskan psychedelic-rockers, the outlook is good—very good, actually. Since their debut record in 2006, Portugal. The Man has released a full-length album each year (two in 2009 if you count The Majestic Majesty, acoustic counterpart to The Satanic Satanists), not to mention several EPs in between. Despite the fairly short amount of time between releases, the band has yet to disappoint. However, In the Mountain, In the Cloud is not simply another entry in what is already a stellar run. It may just be their finest album to date.

In the Mountain In the Cloud is the sixth studio album and first Atlantic Records album from Alaskan psychedelic rock band Portugal. The Man. The album was officially announced April 29 with an official release date of July 19, 2011.

HARRY CHAPIN - Original Album Series (2010)

New York singer-songwriter Harry Chapin earned a reputation as a tireless performer and a remarkably generous man who toured the country constantly, and gave an unheard-of percentage of his performance earnings to charity. Chapin's most memorable tunes, including million-sellers like "Taxi" and "Cats in the Cradle", were story songs delivered in a soulful rasp, in which he sang of missed opportunities and dreams that don't come true. Although critics found his music pretentious or sentimental, Chapin was a huge success in the '70s. When he lost his life in a 1981 traffic accident, the outpouring of emotion from around the world testified to just how much the man and his music were revered. Chapin was also a dedicated humanitarian who fought to end world hunger; he was a key player in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1977. In 1987, Chapin was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his humanitarian work.

MATT SCHOFIELD - Anything But Time (2011)

This fourth record from Matt Schofield continues the British bluesman’s trend of upping the ante with each move he seems to make. That’s not an easy task when you consider that he and his last album, Heads, Tails & Aces, won the 2010 British Blues Awards for both Guitarist of the Year and Album of the Year. Anything But Time, which was helmed by veteran blues producer John Porter (B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush) sests that Schofield is looking to repeat the feat while winning even more fans and accolades as he supports the album with a US tour this summer. Like some of the famous British bluesmen before him, Schofield’s approach to his craft is anchored by a remarkable respect for the blues, but complemented by a brilliant sense of what the genre has to offer, which is particularly appealing to guitar players. No longer just a guitarist to keep an eye out for, Schofield has arrived, and Anything But Time cements his status as an important contemporary bluesman. - premierguitar.com

KASEY ANDERSON AND THE HONKIES - Heart Of A Dog (2011)

Heart of a Dog is all about keeping it simple. Even in Kasey Anderson’s description of how the record came together, he states, “I wanted to make a rock ‘n’ roll record with my friends. I wanted to write ten good songs, put everyone in a room, and roll tape. So that’s what we did.” Needless to say, this is not an experimental release, and there is nothing particularly ambitious going on here from a musical perspective. So what separates Heart of a Dog from its contemporaries? Well for starters, its “country influence” is no gimmick - it can be felt in every pulsating stomp and with each twangy riff. But this album also carries the heaviness and swagger of classic rock a la George Thorogood’s ‘Bad to the Bone’, just modernized. Heart of a Dog is accessible but in no way soft, and it is sure to speak to your innate rebellious rocker.

TRACKS:
01. The Wrong Light 02. Mercy 03. Exit Ghost 04. Your Side Of Town 05. Sirens And Thunder 06. Kasey Anderson's Dream 07. My Blues, My Love 08. My Baby's A Wrecking Ball 09. Revisionist History Blues 10. For Anyone 11. Save It For Later

CAROLYN MARK - Nothing Is Free (2007)

On Nothing Is Free, her fourth album, the Canadian singer-songwriter cracks jokes at inappropriate moments, undercutting the gravity of the songs' dire situations with ill-timed levity. If you go by her songs, which don't have punchlines so much as wincing observations, this tendency usually turns out self-destructive, even if it conveys a certain hard-won wisdom. On stand-out "Pictures at 5", she can't help but do some unexpected reconnaissance on the woman taking her place: "I gotta confess I was strangely impressed/ I thought 'mmm...lace panties' when I looked up her dress." Elsewhere, she turns the malicious blacklist question "Are you now or have you ever been..." into an open-ended country chorus, lovely and even touching. Alt-country by default, Mark sings with a warm, subtle twang but differentiates herself from similar singers like Paula Frazer and frequent collaborator Neko Case with her cutting sense of humor, which on Nothing Is Free sounds like a defense mechanism against life's disappointments - a smile hiding a profound frown. It doesn't keep her from sounding bitter, but at least makes her bitterness entertaining. - pitchfork.com

JOSS STONE - LP1 (2011)

After a long public battle with EMI, Joss Stone became a free agent in 2009. The result is 2011's LP1, a collection of original soul/R&B songs recorded in Nashville in six days.

As a world-renowned soul singer who Smokey Robinson calls "Aretha Joplin," Joss has sold over 11 million records globally. She has also a Grammy winner, five-time Grammy nominee, and the recipient of two Brit Awards. Stone has established her own label, Stone d Records, hence the title of the first album to come out on the label, LP1. It is the first album Joss has recorded with total creative freedom. She co-wrote and co-produced it with super-producer and Eurythmics co-founder, Dave Stewart. Together they immersed themselves into a rock n' soul musical odyssey in Nashville, Tennessee.

In the late '90s Appice created the 'Guitar Zeus project', an opportunity to record with some of the best guitarists in the world. A total of three Guitar Zeus albums were released. "Guitar Heroes" compiles the best of those performances on one album for the first time in Europe.

Carmine Appice: "Guitar Zeus for me was an amazing experience, working with so many great guitarists. It was fun picking out songs for each. Each guitarist loved the songs. It was an awesome experince. I would do it again in a minute even though it was a lot of work. I consider these drum tracks to be some of my best drum performances in my career."

BRYAN LEE - Live & Dangerous (2005)

Recorded at the Spectrum Concert Hall in Montreal, Live & Dangerous features a program of original songs and well-worn covers. Lee fires up his electric guitar and drives each message home. He sings 'em with a youthful voice and convincing inflection. He's the real article. Bruce Katz adds a powerful organ and piano voice that lifts up every song in celebration, as Lee's fiery guitar sizzles with emotion. "Second Line Home" combines the tradition of New Orleans jazz and blues into one soul-strutting outburst that invites the feeling of Mardi Gras. So why not celebrate all year 'round? We need that. Ike Turner's "Gave You What You Wanted" sets the house on fire with a funk anthem that simmers gracefully in a rhythmic groove. "Hug Me Til it Hurts" drags a little slower with the kind of blues that leaves a lasting impression. Just try to stop yourself from moving to the rhythm as Lee and the band cook this one to a slow boil. His guitar speaks loudly and seriously. Lee's "Six String Therapy," the longest track on the album at over fifteen minutes, lets him explain what the blues does for us and how important it is for our daily survival. We've all learned our lessons, and it sure does feel good to share them with someone like Bryan Lee—who's been there, done that, and knows how to explain the message in stellar musical terms.

RONNIE EARL & DUKE ROBILLARD - The Duke Meets The Earl (2005)

The Duke Meets the Earl seems like an obvious album, pairing two of New England's finest contemporary blues guitarists, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, who both share the same sort of hard, clear tone in their playing (Earl actually replaced Robillard in Roomful of Blues when the latter left the group for a solo career). For Earl, who has been working in a kind of jazz blues hybrid style in recent years, it marks a return to straight blues, and with guests like Jimmy McGriff and Mighty Sam McClain aboard on select tracks, The Duke Meets the Earl has the feel of a super session. Throughout, Earl's guitar is featured in the left channel and Robillard's in the right, leading to some wonderful guitar dialogues, particularly on an epic, nearly 16-minute-long version of Walter Price's "My Tears." Another extended workout occurs on "A Soul That's Been Abused," an Earl original, which features McClain on vocals and stretches out to just over 13 minutes. McGriff brings his Hammond B-3 magic to two cuts, Eddie Taylor's "Lookin' for Trouble" and B.B. King's "I Need You So Bad," while the B-3 part on "A Soul That's Been Abused" is handled by Dave Limina. Other highlights include covers of T-Bone Walker's "Two Bones and a Pick," Magic Sam's "What Have I Done Wrong," and Earl's smooth, clear slide style on another original, "Zeb's Thing." With only eight tracks, but clocking in at over 70 minutes, The Duke Meets the Earl gives these two fine guitarists plenty of room to talk to each other, and the result is a classy set of no-frills contemporary blues, with just the slightest hint of jazz to keep it all smooth. - cduniverse.com

RUBY TURNER - The Motown Songbook (1988)

Ruby Turner is a British R&B and soul singer, songwriter and actress. In 1967, she relocated with her family to Handsworth, Birmingham, England when she was nine years old. She is best known for her albums and single releases on both sides of the Atlantic, and has sung backing vocals for others such as Bryan Ferry, UB40, Steve Winwood, Jools Holland and Mick Jagger, as well as writing songs that have been covered by many artists including Lulu, Yazz and Maxi Priest. She achieved the rare feat, for a British singer, of reaching #1 on the US R&B chart, with "It's Gonna Be Alright" in February 1990. Between 1986 and 1995, eight of her singles appeared in the UK Singles Chart with "I'd Rather Go Blind" being the most successful reaching #24 in 1987. Turner performed at the Birmingham Heart Beat 86 concert, which featured George Harrison; and sang on BBC Television's Jools Holland's Hootenanny, in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. She has also appeared as an actress on stage, film and television.

British songstress Ruby Turner showed her range and power on this collection of Motown classics. Unfortunately, she didn't get the attention she deserved or the praises she merited for her wondrous, soulful interpretations. But the gospel-tinged stylist turned in a standout performance, and showed that it was possible to bring fresh life to shopworn classics.

TRACY SPUEHLER

Singer/songwriter Tracy Spuehler is often compared to Aimee Mann, but her music also has a lot in common with the '90s alt-rock sound of Tanya Donelly and Juliana Hatfield. The Los Angeles native first came on the scene playing violin in the Minneapolis-based band Pimentos for Gus. Moving back to L.A. after the band dissolved, Spuehler launched her solo career in 2001 with the album Six Three One. L.A. radio station KCRW put four songs from the album on its playlist, then the song "Where Do We Go?" got national exposure when it was used in a Nissan Altima television commercial. Her 2004 effort, It's the Sound, helped her earn a nomination for the 2005 L.A. Weekly Music Awards as Best Singer/Songwriter. Its title track was featured in two television shows - Joan of Arcadia and Life as We Know It - along with the film Mozart and the Whale. Another song from the album - "Double Vision" - landed on MTV's reality show Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County.

2001 - Six Three One
As described by a review in LA's 'New Times:' Flowing through singer-songwriter Tracy Spuehler's impressive debut disc are elements of Juliana Hatfield's little-girl lilt, Aimee Mann's confessional pop and Liz Phair's indie-rock feistiness. But this native Angeleno puts so much of herself into her songs that her music winds up charmingly fresh and all her own.
TRACKS:
01. Where Do We Go 02. Secret Life 03. Up Up and Away 04. Sunflower 05. Hummingbird 06. 631 07. You Checked Out 08. Little Red Car 09. Soap Opera Life 10. Perfect Story 11. The Gift 12. Round and Round

2004 - It's the Sound
Los Angeles native Tracy Spuehler, whose radio hit "Where Do We Go?" went from airplay on L.A.'s influential KCRW-FM to viewers of national television via a Nissan commercial, has completed her second album, "It’s The Sound." The new album builds on the tradition of her 2001 solo debut, six three one, which was described by New Times as weaving "elements of Juliana Hatfield’s little-girl lilt, Aimee Mann’s confessional pop and Liz Phair’s indie-rock feistiness. But this native Angeleno puts so much of herself into the songs that her music winds up charmingly fresh and all her own." In this new collection of bittersweet, personal songs, Spuehler’s songwriting really shines. Combining a natural ability for writing pop hooks with vivid storytelling, her songs unfold like an Indie Rock Sex & the City. The title track, "It’s the Sound" is a celebration of the moment – a sunny, carefree pop song. "At The Frank Black Show" floods the speaker with emotion over an ex she! thinks she sees in the crowd, while the Pixies frontman is performing. And "Time," which "moves in a different way," features synth programming courtesy of Sean Spuehler, Tracy’s brother, whose resume includes work with Madonna, R.E.M., Dido and Beck. - amazon.com

SHELBY LYNNE - Suit Yourself (2005)

Lynne's follow-up to 2003's Identity Crisis works the same sparse, moody territory, but if the title of the former spoke to her self-esteem at the time, Suit Yourself shows her being more confident in every way. Again acting as her own producer, Lynne took the demo tapes she made in her California home studio to Nashville, where she augmented her first-take vocals with guitar (the Wallflowers' Michael Ward), keyboards (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench), bass, drums, pedal steel, Dobro, and mandolin, employing those instruments merely as brush strokes on a wide-open canvas of voice and emotion. Throughout, Lynne strives to make the project so relaxed that a listener feels as if he's sitting cross-legged in the room--the first track begins with studio chatter, and elsewhere you can hear ice cubes clinking in a glass and the sound of someone pushing the stop button on a tape recorder. For those who prefer a more polished production, this fly-on-the-wall approach may be disconcerting, especially as the occasional track seems unfinished or a bit too rough, with an out-of-tune guitar or a rhythmic disconnect between singer and players. But ultimately, the album satisfies with the honesty and strength of the material, which ranges from Lynne's killer cover of guest Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night in Georgia" (here titled simply "Track 12") to the smoky groove of "I Cry Everyday," the wistful ballad "Old Time's Sake," and the Waylon Jennings-like "Iced Tea." Speaking of outlaws, "Johnny Met June," one of the most memorable tracks, details the Cashes' "meeting" on the far banks of the Jordan. Lynne wrote it the day Johnny died. - amazon.com

01. Go With It 02. Where Am I Now 03. I Cry Everyday 04. You're The Man 05. Old Times Sake 06. I Won't Die Alone 07. You And We 08. Johnny Met June 09. You Don't Have A Heart 10. Iced Tea 11. Sleep 12. Rainy Night In Georgia

BLACKIE & THE RODEO KINGS - Kings And Queens (2011)

Over the past decade, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings has organically evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America, having released six CDs and evolved a feeling of brotherhood manifested in a sense of groove, timbral blend and melodic and rhythmic play that is distinctive, mystical, energizing and constantly evocative. The sum is indeed greater than the parts - and the parts are as good as they get. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remains one of Canada's greatest musical treasures. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are proud to announce their release, an impressive collaboration by the name of Kings & Queens. This release pairs the band with some of their favourite female singers and friends - and some of the biggest names in roots, blues and jazz - Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Pam Tillis, Serena Ryder, Lucinda Williams, Cassandra Wilson, Amy Helm, Janiva Magness, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Sam Phillips, Sara Watkins, Exene Cervenka, Patti Scialfa and Holly Cole. Grammy- and Juno-winning producer Colin Linden (Bruce Cockburn, Tom Wilson, Stephen Fearing, Colin James) took the helm for the new album, and the new recordings have taken the Kings from Nashville to Toronto to New York City to New Orleans, Los Angeles, Woodstock and back again. As the band explains, "No destination is too far for love...." The idea for Kings and Queens was hatched in a rental van at the end of a Rodeo Kings tour. Late one night, on a long drive between Somewhere and Somewhere-else, the band began talking about the various female artists they have had the privilege of working with over the years. What began with a page torn out of a notebook and a lot of interjections like "Hey, what about..." and "Wouldn't it be great to work with ..." has transformed into a whole album featuring these legendary and iconic female voices; one on each of fourteen...amazon.com

THIN LIZZY - Waiting For An Alibi: The Collection (2011)

This 2011 budget-priced U.K. collection offers up a nice balance between Thin Lizzy's radio hits ( "Boys Are Back in Town," "Whiskey in the Jar," "Killer on the Loose," "Dancin' in the Moonlight") and overlooked gems like "Soldier of Fortune," "Opium Trail," and "King's Vengeance." Twenty tracks strong, Waiting for an Alibi: The Collection holds its own against other single-disc overviews like 2004's Greatest Hits and 2006's Definitive Collection (2002's exhaustive box set Vagabonds Kings Warriors and Angels still provides the most bang for the buck) and provides the perfect gateway for listeners looking to get their first fix of Ireland's first heavy rockers. 2011 collection from the Irish Rock legends led by the late Phil Lynott. Lizzy have left behind a spectacular series of songs and albums because of their desire to continuously challenge themselves. There was no style they wouldn't tackle with each combination of talented guitarists like Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson who brought their own individuality to the band as well as fiery front man and songwriter supreme, Phil Lynott. This 20 track collection includes many of their hits including 'Whiskey In The Jar', and the 1975 anthem that surely defined the band, 'The Boys Are Back In Town'. You'll also find 'Waiting For An Alibi', 'Killer On The Loose' and 'Dancin' In the Moonlight'. - cduniverse.com

He was recently named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company Magazine. Stewart’s career spans more than 25 years and more than 100 million album sales. With Eurythmics’ partner Annie Lennox, Stewart delivered ingenious pop / rock hits such as “Here Comes The Rain Again”, “Who’s That Girl”, “Would I Lie To You”, “Missionary Man”, and “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”. In 1999, the duo was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Brits, followed by a world tour that saw proceeds donated to Amnesty International and Greenpeace.

Dave Stewart's The Blackbird Diaries is unlike anything he has embarked on during his illustrious 30 year music career both with Eurythmics and as a solo artist. With an American flare and rooted in rock, country, and blues, the album is in the vein of recent releases by Bob Dylan and Neil Young - masterful recordings mixed with rich and detailed lyrics. The Blackbird Diaries showcases a very different type of songwriting for Stewart with more story-driven autobiographical lyrics, which is a departure from the pop/rock sounds which have made him one of the most successful and revered songwriters/collaborators of all time. Tales of loves conquered and loves lost, Dave gets intimate, personal with words while he allows his music to rock free on an album that might just prove to be this artist's second, and perhaps finest, act. - amazon.com

CAROLYN MARK AND NQ ARBUCKLE - Let's Just Stay Here (2009)

In 2007 the blues singer Bettye LaVette teamed up with the Drive By Truckers to release the stellar Scene of the Crime. Two years later ex-Trucker Jason Isbell teamed up with the 400 Unit to release a spectacular eponymous album. And now, at the end of 2009, alternative country songbird Carolyn Mark finds herself teaming up with NQ Arbuckle and singing a song that contains the line “It’s hard being a good man listening to the Drive By Truckers” from an album that does the seemingly difficult task of landing on par with the previous two mentioned releases. The selling point of the album—the selling point of any Carolyn Mark album, actually—is her remarkable voice. She’s a passionate vocalist with a tone that at times recalls latter day Emmylou Harris (the way she opens up “2nd Time” recalls the Red Dirt Girl’s recent output), a great sense of phrasing, an impressive range, and the ability to turn an emotion at the flip of a dime. That Mark remains in fine, fine vocal form isn’t a surprise to any of those who have been listening to her or her collaboration with Neko Case over the years. - popmatters.com

JERRY JOSEPH - Everything Was Beautiful (2000)

Jerry Joseph is an American singer, songwriter, and guitar player. Some songwriters just strike down to the heart of things. Even when they're being tender they nail you in the soul's solar plexus, shaking us with words and wires and something inescapably human. Jerry Joseph is this kind of composer – a rocker with emotional scalpel that cuts deep every time. He wears his influences on his sleeve – Elvis Costello, Neil Young, John Lennon, Steve Earle – but tailors them in ways that are always distinctly himself, probing the politics of love and nations with equal dexterity. By turns tough and unbelievably bruised, Joseph's work manages to be joyfully pissed off and achingly bittersweet, often within the space of just a few verses. There's a healthy restlessness to his music, a stripe of his modernity and tireless engagement with the world that places him next to younger contemporaries like Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) and Ryan Adams.

JOE ELY - Satisfied At Last (2011)

When you have spent more than 40 years writing and recording songs that underscore a sense of turbulence, where violent winds, thunderstorms and tornadoes figure rominently and beckoning, distant horizons are ever present, it takes courage to name an album, Satisfied At Last. Known for a life full of wanderlust and constant motion, getting lost and rediscovering himself on the world's lonesome highways and dusty back roads, Ely's latest release from his independent record label, Rack'Em Records, sests that he is seeing things in a new light, but one listen to the album that embodies his genre busting unique mix of traditional Tex-Mex rhythms, outlaw country, Texas blues and good old-fashioned American rock and roll, people will see that he isn't about to slow down any time soon.

TOM OVANS - Get On Board (2009)

It is of course obligatory in any Tom Ovans review to mention Bob Dylan. Obligatory and indeed essential, because throughout his career has borrowed bits of songs, bits of tunes, the odd snatch of phrasing, the nasal drawl...basically you name it and it will have appeared on one or another Ovans album and “Get On Board” is no different with “Candy Lane” and “Rainbows” being the most “notable” examples. If you want to get to the bottom of Ovans though this is just something you have to live with, and while it may put many off those who aren’t will find a singer-songwriter of power and ability and also one who, unlike many others, is prepared to go out on a musical limb. Said limb is “Too Late Now”, a seven minute epic that close the album, is a cinematic odyssey unlike anything else he’s ever recorded, a veritable Paris, Texas of a song that’s not a second too long. - americana-uk.com

MIKE ZITO - Greyhound (2011)

Greyhound is a continuation of the song writing process previously established by Zito on his two critically acclaimed recordings for Eclecto Groove Records. His music retains its bluesy Americana charm and big wide-open Texas sound as he explores more introspective themes dealing with the story and experiences of his youth after he chose to run away from home on a Greyhound bus. The album was produced by Grammy-award winning guitarist/singer/songwriter Anders Osborne and was recorded at Dockside Studios in Lafayette, Louisiana.

BASKERY - New Friends (2011)

Baskery from Stockholm are an all-girl trio consisting of sisters Sunniva, Greta and Stella Bondesson, who have been making New Friends the whole world over in these past few years touring clubs and major festivals. Wherever they go, they captivate audiences with their energetic performance, winning songs and extraordinary musicianship as evidenced in intricate three-part harmonies and multi-instrumentalism. The sisters have been on the road since the late 1990s. but in 2006, they chose the name Baskery and started focusing on original material and an original identity blending Alt.Country/Garage/Swamp Punk and subtle, singer-songwriter-influenced Americana. In 2008, Baskery released their debut album Fall Among Thieves on Glitterhouse Records - it was wildly praised (including a rave review in Mojo) for its intense live-in-the-studio sound. On New Friends Baskery manage to preserve the live feel and familial chemistry in a higher quality studio recording with significantly improved songwriting, and arrangements that lean more towards electric intruments and rock than their debut. - rhythmonline.co.uk

THE BAND OF HEATHENS

The Band of Heathens are an Americana band from Austin, Texas. The three principal songwriters - Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist - shared the bill at Momo's, an Austin club. Originally, each singer/songwriter performed his own set. However, they eventually started sharing the stage, and collaborating together with bassist Seth Whitney. The Wednesday night series was billed as "The Good Time Supper Club". A misprint in a local paper billed the act as "The Heathens." In 2007, drummer John Chipman joined the band. Also notable is a version of "Ain't No More Cane", a traditional prison work song of the American south. The Austin based Band of Heathens included their distinctive arrangement of the old song on their "Live at Momo's" album. In November 2008 the Americana Music Association announced the Top 100 Albums of the Americana Charts for 2008 and The Band of Heathens came in at No. 8, thus referencing the Band Of Heathens Album as the 8th most played record on the Americana Airplay Charts for 2008. In July, 2009 BOH taped an Austin City Limits show that aired in the Fall of 2009. The year was especially significant for ACL in that Austin City Limits was celebrating its 35th anniversary year. The band's unique genesis and creativity were highlighted during the Austin City Limits interview conducted after their performance. The TV performance showcased a set by both the Band Of Heathens and Elvis Costello. Following the Austin City Limits PBS show, the band also played on the German television live concert series Rockpalast on October 9, 2009, performing 14 songs, many from the albums "Band Of Heathens" and "One Foot In The Ether." In 2009, the band was nominated for a "New Emerging Artist" award by the Americana Music Association. In 2010, the band was again honored by the Americana Music Association as nominees for the "Best Duo/Group of the Year". - wikipedia

JOE JACKSON TRIO - Live Music: Europe 2010 (2011)

Joe Jackson went back on the road at the end of 2010, playing shows as trio (with Graham Maby on bass and Dave Houghton on drums) all over Europe. Without any new product to promote, he ended up playing a big number of sold out shows, with the usual great response from his devoted fans. As always, Joe Jackson enriched songs spanning his whole career with new arrangements, making the old songs "new", once again. Classics like 'Steppin' Out', 'Got The Time' or 'A Slow Song' but also original cover versions of some of his idols' tunes - David Bowie's 'Scary Monsters', 'Inbetweenies' by Ian Dury and The Blockheads and a stunning version of The Beatles' 'Girl' with Joe Jackson alone on piano and vocals. The title 'Live Music' is not accidental. Even if mixed with extreme care (the sound is warm and rich) the performances you can hear on this record are exactly what happened on stage - a rare thing in an era of re-recorded live albums. Definitely, one of the best documents of Joe Jackson live, giving you the feeling to be away only a few metres from the stage. The songs are all pop masterpieces and the musicianship is spectacular. - hmv.com

SHELBY LYNNE - Tears, Lies, And Alibis (2010)

With Tears, Lies, and Alibis the follow-up to 2008's Just A Little Lovin' and the first release on her own label, Everso Records, Shelby Lynne affirms her position as a visionary, iconoclastic artist who deftly weaves country, soul, rock, blues, pop and folk influences to forge her own unique style. Like Identity Crisis (2003) and Suit Yourself (2005), this sparse, unguarded collection was produced by Lynne, who evokes a live-in-the-studio vibe from a stellar group of musicians. Born in Quantico, VA, she grew up in Jackson, AL and headed to Nashville at an early age. At 18, Lynne s demos landed her an appearance on TNN s Nashville Now series, which led to a Top 50 duet ( "If I Could Bottle This Up" ) with George Jones and a record deal. Following the release of the critically acclaimed I Am Shelby Lynne in 2000, she won the GRAMMY® for Best New Artist. She made her acting debut in 2005, playing Johnny Cash's mother in the Fox Searchlight motion picture Walk the Line. - amazon.com

BONNIE TYLER - Heart Strings (2002)

'Heart Strings' is a very apt title as it sure does pull on 'em! This CD proves that Ms Tyler has lost none of the fire & power in her 60 cigarettes a day voice & delivery. Take 'And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going': who could have imagined anyone but Jennifer Holiday singing this song? But Bonnie rips the guts out of it & turns it into a real tour de force. She shows real light & shade in her singing on this album. She can do soft & lilting as well as gruff & growling. That contrast gives these songs heart & soul. The presence of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra adds greatly to the depth of this CD also, their lushness working well with Bonnie's raspy vocals. There is not one duff track on this album. The songs were obviously chosen very carefully, & there's no doubt that they were picked out because Bonnie loves them. This album has the feel of a labour of love, & it'll certainly be heard in my household on a very regular basis! I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful CD. - amazon.com

The most comprehensive project ever devoted to the Atlantic story, this numbered, limited edition collection spans the label's entire history, from its inception in 1947 to the present day. "ATLANTIC RECORDS: TIME CAPSULE" is dedicated to Atlantic founder Ahmet Ertegun, who remained active at the company until his passing in 2006 at the age of 83. The artists Ahmet championed, the music he pioneered, and the executives he mentored led a revolution in contemporary music that reshaped and reflected the modern cultural landscape. In the label's formative years, the groundbreaking "Atlantic Sound" was forged by the most formidable production team to ever reside at a single company - including such industry icons as Atlantic co-founder Herb Abramson, Jerry Wexler, Ahmet's brother Nesuhi, Tom Dowd, Leiber & Stoller, Arif Mardin, and Joel Dorn. Today, led by chairmen Craig Kallman and Julie Greenwald, Atlantic remains inspired by its deep roots as a company driven first and foremost by a passion for the music and a steadfast belief in its artists.

"TIME CAPSULE" was created in the same spirit that infused the label's very beginnings. Just as the company's founders, to quote Ahmet, "wanted to make the kind of records that we would want to buy," the team set out to assemble a collection that would tell a story that they would want to hear. From the outset, the idea was to present Atlantic Records "from the inside," drawing on rarely seen material from the Atlantic Archives, Ahmet's personal papers, the work of staff photographers through the years, and recollections from artists, producers, and other pivotal figures in the company's history. As Atlantic grew from literally a one-room operation into a major international recording company, the label released an extraordinary body of recordings that have had a profound impact on the course of modern music. The music on this comprehensive collection traces Atlantic's dramatic evolution from its R&B roots into its wide-ranging prominence in jazz, pop, soul, folk, rock'n'roll, and hip-hop. "TIME CAPSULE" is living history - a diverse mosaic of our times, given voice by an exceptional array of singers, musicians, and composers. In contrast to other independent labels born in the '40s and early '50s, Atlantic never became irretrievably locked into one musical style. So while its foundation was built on a string of pioneering rhythm and blues recordings, before the '50s had passed, Atlantic had branched out into groundbreaking jazz and crossed over into white pop territory. In the '60s, the company reclaimed the black music crown with the definitive soul roster, while at the same time moving full-bore into the new rock era on both sides of the Atlantic. By the time Woodstock defined a cultural sea change in 1969, two decades after Atlantic's formation, the label had grown into a global music powerhouse.

Today, sixty years since scoring its first hit, Atlantic's original entrepreneurial spirit remains its driving force, and unlike countless long-departed labels, it has thrived through constant evolution and determined diversity. What has mattered most to the company's long-term survival is that it continues be run by true music people. At the end of the first decade of the new century, the "house that Ahmet built" is in the midst of a renaissance, ranking #1 in an industry in the midst of radical change. It is a testament to Atlantic's unique place in history that it remains such a vital force six decades down the line.

DEF LEPPARD- Mirror Ball: Live & More (2011) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Fresh from their recent headlining performance at this year’s Download Festival, Sheffield rockers Def Leppard are back with their newest offering ‘Mirror Ball’. It may come as a surprise to many that, after more than 30 years, nine albums, countless world tours and hit singles, this is the band’s first-ever live album. Recorded at various dates following the 2008 release of their ninth album ‘Songs from the Sparkle Lounge’, ‘Mirror Ball’ features live versions of 21 tracks from Def Leppard’s 30-year back catalogue. Diehard Leppard fans will be pleased to hear that, not only are they getting a fantastic live double-album for their money, but also three brand-new studio tracks, ‘Undefeated’, ‘Kings of the World’ and ‘It’s All About Believing’. Newer additions to the Def Leppard fanbase, on the other hand, should find that this doubles as an ideal ‘best of’ compilation, encompassing the majority of the band’s biggest hits from the ‘80s and ‘90s, as well as a smaller selection of their more recent material. - stereoboard.com

ZZ TOP - Live In Germany 1980 (2011)

For the first time on CD, the release ZZ Top Live in Germany 1980. This 16-song Texas manifesto features guitarist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard and bassist Dusty Hill, in an onstage explosion of barrelhouse jump blues and boogie. The Grugahalle in Essen was rockin’ on that night in 1980. ZZ Top, touring in support of 1979’s Deguello, is totally energized on nine of Deguello’s tracks, complemented by fan favorites from Tres Hombres (1973) and Fandango (1975), as well as righteous roots-reverent covers of Elmore James and Elvis Presley. Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Famers ZZ Top have never had a personnel change over the course of their 40-year career. These instantly - recognizable musicians are larger-than-life, their image clearly defined in American pop culture. They’re known as much for their dedication to the blues as they are for their self-designed custom-made guitars. Whether kicking off the MTV generation in 1983 with their groundbreaking videos or continuing to put on world class shows today, ZZ Top are as pioneering now as they ever were, yet still mindful of all who came before them in the glorious longtime tradition of this great music. - hollywoodtoday.net

Térez Montcalm is a Canadian singer-songwriter. She describes herself as "a jazz singer with a very 'rock' attitude". As a musician Montcalm sings and plays acoustic guitar, which she has played since a young age, as well as playing double bass. SHELBY LYNNE - I Am Shelby Lynne (1999)

"I Am Shelby Lynne" is the sixth studio album by Shelby Lynne, released on April 10, 1999 in the United Kingdom, and on January 25, 2000 in the United States. After several years of lackluster results from recording various styles of country music in and around Nashville, Lynne co-wrote and recorded this album in Palm Springs, California, incorporating confessional lyrics with musical elements from blues and rock and roll. Lynne collaborated on this album with producer Bill Bottrell, who had previously worked with Sheryl Crow on her debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club. The album is considered to be her breakout work, and the catalyst toward Lynne receiving her first career Grammy award as Best New Artist of 2000. The award came more than a decade after Lynne's debut album, 1990's Sunrise. - wikipedia

THE JEFF GOLUB BAND [feat. Henry Butler] - The Three Kings (2011)

Jeff Golub is a contemporary jazz guitarist with 11 solo albums and 3 CD's as the leader of the instrumental band "Avenue Blue". Before becoming an instrumentalist, Golub worked as a sideman to a number of very successful rock and pop artists. He's arguably best known for his work with Rod Stewart, whom he played with from 1988 until 1995 performing on 4 albums and 5 world tours as well as recording the live DVD "One Night Only" live at Royal Albert Hall.

On his first album for eOne Music, "Blues For You", Jeff Golub began a stunning career transition from a contemporary, smooth jazz icon, back to his roots as a blues-rock guitarist of tremendous power and authority. That transition is now complete with Jeff s creation of The Jeff Golub Band, featuring the living legend of New Orleans piano, Henry Butler, currently a featured artist on the hit HBO series Treme. The 'Three Kings' of Jeff Golub's new collection are B.B., Albert, and Freddie - cornerstones of the modern blues revival of the 1960's, and personal touchstones for Jeff Golub as he dives deeper into the limitless wellspring of this music. In addition to the instrumental dazzle, the album is packed with passionate vocals by Henry Butler and drummer Josh Dion. For more spice and sizzle check out guest appearances by Jeff's fellow guitar masters Robben Ford and Sonny Landreth. All in all Three Kings promises to be one of the most listened to blues releases of 2011. - amazon.com

THE JAYHAWKS - Tomorrow the Green Grass [Legacy Edition] (2011)

At its best, listening to the Jayhawks make music is a beautiful American experience falling somewhere between drinking a cold Coke on a hot day and driving through the Rocky Mountains at sunset. Perhaps it's in the clarity of Mark Olson's tenor melodies and their accompanying ghostly harmonies, or maybe it's in Gary Louris's immensely raved-up country rock licks. Or perhaps it's the impression left by lyrics that never reveal the whole story but tell just enough to tear at you and make you understand their feeling--the loneliness, the sorrow, the hope, or the peace.
The Jayhawks were at their very best indeed on 1992's Hollywood Town Hall. Their guitars were sharp, the words perfect, and the melodies unforgettable. With Tomorrow the Green Grass, however, 1994's version of the great country soul group is decidedly less filling, even when still savory. The addition of violins is a nice touch, but a misstep where the music's muscle is concerned. The guitars are still gorgeous, but muddier and less hook-laden than before. The lyrics still haunt, but they're more disjointed and less gripping this time around. And the melodies are both a blessing and a curse: more easily catching and chart-ready but with a lot less meat on their bones. Call it cosmic American music in the sugary Milky Way galaxy. Or else just remember how much Gram Parsons always did look sort of like David Cassidy. - amazon.com

MICHAEL TERRY - Too Bad (2011)

This is my second album. The first album, Bighead Baby, was recorded in the basement so to speak. I am very proud to say this album was recorded at MusicMasters in St. Louis for an indie label called Victoria Company. All 15 tracks were written by myself, there are a few that were on the first cd, however I feel the new versions are very cool and worth the investment. I love when a song breathes new life, yet maintains enough character that it's original integrity still exsists. The players were all fabulous, and totally got the music. I'm doing all guitars, except sharing solo's on two songs with guest guitarist extraordinare Rich McDonough. Doing all vocals except on one song where I duet with Mama's Pride frontman Pat Liston. Amazing talent. All background vocals were sung by Kelly Wild, wow, what a voice. This album was so much fun to record. I am so grateful to have worked with producer/engineer Greg Trampe. He is such a natural, and one heck of a guy to boot. - Michael Terry

MICHAEL POWERS - Revolutionary Boogie (2011)

Michael’s collaboration with the ZOHO label started in 2010 when he provided two stand-out instrumental tracks to ZOHO’s JJ Cale CD project (“Tribute to JJ Cale – The Instrumental Sessions”, ZOHO ROOTS ZM 201008). With "Revolutionary Boogie", Michael presents his first full length CD recording for the label, with eclectic choices of covers and originals, cutting across several Blues, Classic Rock and Americana genres. “This is how music should be, no one should be restricted to a category”, he comments. Michael sings on his original I Miss Your Kissin’. Guest pianist is the 9 x WC Handy “Best Blues Instrumentalist-Piano” Award nominee Henry Butler from New Orleans. Though blinded by glaucoma since birth, Butler is a pianist of incredible musical diversity, reflecting the exciting cross-cultural gumbo of his New Orleans birthplace. Backing Michael on vocals is the sweet, melodic Angel Rose, and bassist Charlie Torres adds congas.

DONAVON FRANKENREITER - Glow (2010)

Donavon Frankenreiter released his self-titled 2004 debut through his surf buddy Jack Johnson's label Brushfire. And three studio albums later he's still swimming in the same balmy beach-folk waters. "I wanna see your daylight shining all around your heart," he murmurs over mellow acoustic guitar in "Glow," one of several tracks here seemingly awaiting an eventual appearance in some feel-good romantic comedy. As with Johnson's stuff, some of these tunes tread so lightly that they fail to make an impression at all; "Dance Like Nobody's Watching," for instance, might've been more accurately titled "Sing Like Nobody's Listening." And "Keeping Me Away From You" sounds like it was cobbled together from cutting-room scraps by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. But when Frankenreiter hits upon a groove juicy enough to compensate for his featherweight croon-as heard on the organ-enriched "Hold On," which summons some Black Crowes-style boogie-rock action-it's smooth sailing from here to Margaritaville. - billboard.com

TRACKS:
01. Intro 02. Glow 03. Keeping Me Away From You 04. Shadows 05. Push 06. The Ones In Your Dreams 07. Home 08. Dance Like Nobody's Watching 09. All Right 10. Hold On 11. Three / Outro

JEFFERSON STARSHIP - Original Album Classics (2009) [5CD Box]

Jefferson Starship is an American rock band that was formed in the early 1970s. Although its recording career and popularity peaked in the early '80s, Jefferson Starship continues to tour as of 2011. The group is a spin-off from Jefferson Airplane and evolved from a 1970 science fiction-themed concept album by then-Airplane member Paul Kantner entitled Blows Against the Empire.

It seems, as with other volumes in Sony BMG Europe's Original Albums Classics series, that the label has assembled the very best full-lengths that Jefferson Starship cut - all the records contained here scored at least one hit single, and in the case of at least four, more than one. While Dragon Fly and Red Octopus had hits - such as "Ride the Tiger" from the former and "Miracles" from the latter, it was Spitfire that put them over the top with "With Your Love" and "Switchblade." These are likely appeal to the older fans of this band, but the '80s were kind to Jefferson Starship, too, with Earth and Freedom at Point Zero. These recordings contained singles such as "Count on Me" and "Jane," respectively. The first three albums in this set were recorded pretty much as albums with the '70s mode of assemblage considered, while the latter two focused more on hits. Either way, fans will find this set - with all remastered recordings and bonus tracks galore - to be attractive and affordably priced. ~ All Music Guide

ARETHA FRANKLIN - A Woman Falling Out Of Love (2011)

Featuring an eclectic mix of gospel, ballads, blues-infused and nods to urban hip-hop, "A Woman Falling Out of Love" is the long awaited and over due return of Aretha Franklin. Anticipated since the spring of 2008, Franklin's new recording features two songs she wrote and several she self produced, rather than the established hit makers assigned her during her tenure at Arista, finally released on her own label, Aretha's Records. The release of this recording was partially due to legal problems during her tenure at Arista Records, whose president, Clive Davis at the time felt she owned the label one more recording. In the interveining years, Franklin faced life threatening surgery and Davis softened his stand. The fact that this recording sat unreleased for over three years and still sounds fresh is a tribute to Aretha. Few of today's crop of diva's could pull this off. Unfortunately an initial glitch with a skip during A Summer Place, this recording has been recalled, further adding to the wait fans must endure. Well worth the effort to seek out at specific outlet during the first month of distribution, before becoming widely available in the near future, this is a most welcome return of The Queen Of Soul and whets the appetite for what is yet to come from the undisputed Queen of Soul. - amazon.com

MAVIS STAPLES - Only For The Lonely [2 Albums On One CD] (1993)

Mavis Staples began her career with her family group in 1950. With Mavis' earthy contralto voice and Pops' songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staple Singers evolved from enormously popular gospel singers to become the most spectacular and influential spiritually-based group in USA. The group signed to Stax Records in 1968 and hit the Top 40 eight times between 1971 and 1975, joining their gospel harmonies and deep faith with musical accompaniment from members of Booker T. and the MGs. Mavis also recorded two solo albums for Stax Records. The first one, ‘Mavis Staples’, released in 1969, was a fine collection of pop standards like Dionne Warwick's ‘A House Is Not a Home,’ Sam Cooke's ‘You Send Me’ and a pair of Otis Redding songs. The follow-up, 1970's ‘Only for the Lonely’, was even better, yielding the heartbreaking R&B hit ‘I Have Learned to Do Without You,’ the exquisite slow blues ‘How Many Times’, the best version ever recorded of the classic ‘Since I Fell For You’ and the finger-snapping Memphis soul of ‘It Makes Me Wanna Cry.’ The 20 tracks from those two albums were combined on this 1993 CD entitled ‘Only for the Lonely’ and supplemented with ‘That's the Way Love Is,’ a duet with Johnny Taylor from Boy Meets Girl, a Stax collection of male-female duets.

SHELBY LYNNE - Identity Crisis (2003)

An "Identity Crisis" for Shelby Lynne is no big surprise, considering that she began her career as the jazziest singer in Nashville, with predictably uncommercial results. Her previous two albums found Lynne making her bid for Sheryl Crow/Shawn Colvin-style pop stardom with big production and pop-rock aesthetics. This time around, she's producing herself, and the arrangements tend toward the opposite extreme; a bare-bones format with the rhythm section working around Lynne's voice and her (mostly acoustic) guitar. Whether Lynne is reclaiming her own identity or simply working with a smaller budget in the wake of disappointing sales figures, the change is a welcome one. The songs feel earthier, rootsier, and much closer to Lynne's heart, allowing her impressive voice to wring out all the inherent soul. Whether or not it's her ticket to stardom, "Identity Crisis" is one of Lynne's most personal and artistically successful statements. - cduniverse.com

DOLLY PARTON - Live From London (2009)

It’s hard to maintain objectivity when you simply love an artist so much, and this writer’s enthusiasm was shared by the London O2 audience in July 2008, who gave Dolly such a deservedly rapturous reception. As Kenny Rogers said of Dolly, “An artist is: who she is, who she thinks she is, and who her fans think she is; and the closer those three are together, the more complete that artist is. None is more complete than her.” Parton is unparalleled as writer, singer, business woman and self-publicist, still. At 62, she managed to put on a show with the energy of a performer half her age. There are some new arrangements of older songs – The Grass Is Blue, Little Sparrow – but the hits stay the way they were, just with a little more energy. Here You Come Again and Nine To Five are particularly strong. There are a couple of niggles, though. It is hard to put a live CD together seamlessly from two nights’ recordings, but not impossible; here, annoyingly, applause seems to jump in from nowhere, and fades curiously quickly a couple of times.

TRACKS:
01. Two Doors Down 02. Jolene 03. Backwoods Barbie 04. Coat Of Many Colors 05. Only Dreamin' 06. Better Get To Livin' 07. Shinola 08. Little Sparrow 09. The Grass Is Blue 10. Do I Ever Cross Your Mind 11. Here You Come Again 12. Islands In The Stream 13. 9 To 5 14. I Will Always Love You 15. Jesus And Gravity

HEART - Greatest Hits (1998)

Heart had a pair of greatest-hits collections to their credit by 1997, but both did not contain all the renowned studio versions of their classic hits from the '70s (both 1980's Heart Greatest Hits: Live on Epic and 1997's Greatest Hits on Capitol contained half studio and half live material). 1998's Greatest Hits on Epic/Legacy finally corrected this once and for all -- collecting all of Heart's '70s studio hits on a single disc. Nearly all of the songs have become classic rock staples, the best-known being the Zep-esque rockers "Crazy on You," "Barracuda," and "Magic Man," while the more subdued acoustic material ("Dreamboat Annie," "Love Alive," "Dog & Butterfly") showcases the immense talents of vocalist Ann Wilson. Other notables include "Kick It Out," "Heartless," "Bebe le Strange," "Straight On," and "Even It Up," while an all-new studio cut recorded in 1998 ("Strong, Strong Wind") and a live cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" from 1980 are included as bonuses. While Heart may have enjoyed their biggest commercial success in the '80s with pop-oriented material, their more straight-ahead '70s work, showcased on Greatest Hits, has stood the test of time incredibly well. JERRY LEE LEWIS & MICKEY GILLEY - Back To Back (1996)

Mickey Gilley is an American country music singer and musician. Although he started out singing straight-up country and western material in the 1970s, he moved towards a more pop-friendly sound in the 1980s, bringing him further success on not just the country charts, but the pop charts as well. Among his biggest hits are "Room Full of Roses," "Don't the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time," and the remake of the Soul hit "Stand by Me". He is also the cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl McVoy, Jim Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart. For many years, Gilley lived in the shadow of his cousin, Jerry Lee Lewis, the rock and roll singer and musician in the 1950s. The two as children grew up close by each other; Gilley lived just across the Mississippi River from Louisiana where Lewis grew up. Gilley, Lewis, and another cousin Jimmy Swaggart played piano together as children. On March 2, 2002, Gilley, along with his two famous cousins Lewis and Swaggart, were inducted into the Delta Music Museum Hall of Fame in Ferriday, Louisiana.

WILSON PICKETT - The Definitive Wilson Pickett (2006)

One of the legends of soul, Wilson Pickett had a voice so big it could out-bellow a full-on horn section and still convey an emotional fragility. From the hardest grooves of the pre-funk era to the steamiest of Southern ballads, he stamped his authority on everything he recorded. This double-CD has been released to mark his death in January 2006 and features all the key tracks: "In The Midnight Hour", "Mustang Sally", "Land of 1000 Dances", "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", as well as his version of "Hey Jude", so powerful a performance that it should have caused Paul McCartney to consider retirement. The hits dried up in the early 1970s, but he continued performing and his influence lived on - helped by his songs appearing in movies The Blues Brothers and The Commitments. A man who could inject soul into the Archies' "Sugar Sugar" could never be ignored! You're probablybetter off with the 1992 compilation A Man and a Half (more tracks, in chronological order), but - if that's unavailable -this is a decent alternative.

Wilson Pickett embodies soul music at its funkiest, most forceful, and sweat-drenched best in this amazing collection.

TERRY REID - River (1973)

Terry Reid, famously, turned down the opportunity to be the singer in the nascent Led Zeppelin, instead hipping his friend Jimmy Page to a little-known guy in Birmingham named Robert Plant who Reid felt would be more suited for the job. Over the course of Reid's peripatetic solo career, his intriguingly off-kilter musical choices proved that he was right to turn Page down. For example, 1973's RIVER, Reid's first album in nearly four years, is a loose, mellow exercise in southern California folk-jazz, very close in spirit and execution to what Van Morrison, Tim Buckley, and Joni Mitchell were doing around the same period. The seven songs are lengthy, meandering grooves powered by David Lindley's dobro and slide guitar parts and featuring Reid experimenting with Morrison's incantatory vocal style alongside his own familiar British blues wail. This is the first time on CD for this 1973 Atlantic Records rock classic featuring David Lindley on lead & slide guitar. - cduniverse.com

GREGG ALLMAN - Jazz Fest Live 2011 (2011) thumbupthumbupthumbup

In the Blues Tent of the New Orleans Jazz Fest 2011, the most valuable player of Friday's (May 6) closing set had to be Gregg Allman's new liver. After all: No it, no him. And no deeply satisfied Blues Tent. Looking fit and singing strong for a man of his mileage, Allman fronted a brawny, horn-driven band that sounded more Memphis or Muscle Shoals than Macon, typical of his solo work. The old liver, a victim of Hepatitis C, was swapped out about a year ago. Long may the new one run. Friday, multiple ovations met solos and song endings. A few Allman Brothers Band favorites made the playlist, but only "Melissa" would remind anyone of the version they first heard, on 1972's "Eat a Peach." The Allman Brothers favorite "Whipping Post," best known as a slinky 6/8 jam on disc and endless classic-rock-radio plays, was unleashed as a 4/4 stomp. In addition to his new plumbing, Allman has been revivified by the reception won by his album of blues-chestnut covers released earlier this year, "Low Country Blues" (produced by T Bone Burnett, some keyboards by Dr. John).

DISC 1:
01. Don't Keep Me Wonderin 02. I'm No Angel 03. Tears, Tears, Tears 04. Just Another Rider 05. Going Back To Daytona 06. I Can't Be Satisfied 07. Dreams

DISC 2: 01. Before Bullets Fly 02. Melissa 03. Whipping Post 04. Midnight Rider 05. Stage Banter 06. Sweet Feelin' 07. Statesboro Blues

DEREK & THE DOMINOS - In Concert (1973) [from 'Layla' Super Deluxe Edition, 2011]

ALL NEWLY REMASTERED - from "Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs" (2011 - Super Deluxe Edition)

Derek and the Dominos were a blues-rock band formed in the spring of 1970 by guitarist and singer Eric Clapton with keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon, who had all played with Clapton in Delaney, Bonnie & Friends. The band released only one studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, which featured prominent contributions from guest guitarist Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band.

They tried to make a second album, but drugs and other personal problems got in the way. Whitlock explains:

"The road and substance abuse killed it, but mostly ego killed that band. Eric had a big ego and so did Jim Gordon. Eric had an inferiority complex. Those things don't mix, especially when you put alcohol and drugs with them. We were doing those sort of things. We were all indulging in our own form of egotism. I wanted to do my own thing. The premise of Derek and the Dominos was that we could play together as a band and still do our own solo stuff. That didn't work. Everything just got out of hand with the drugs and all that, so eventually everyone just drifted after the initial blow up with Jim Gordon and Eric. When the band broke up, he refused to play with Jim Gordon ever again. They had a falling out right in the middle of the session, so that was that. That was fine with me, because what we were recording was garbage. They have it out now as the jams and alternate Dominos stuff, the second album - it's garbage. I've heard garage bands that sound better than us. You can really hear it on there, it's just a lot of ego with Eric and Jim. I didn't want to get in the middle of it - a great deal of the stuff I didn't even play on. It was like who could play the most and get the most complicated. When that whole thing broke up, I decided - "Shoot, here I've got everybody I've ever played with, I'm going to record my own record." I wanted to play. I was used to playing. I wasn't used to sitting around looking at my picture on my own wall. That wasn't my idea of doing what we were supposed to be doing. I decided to do my own record, so I called Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd and talked to them about doing a deal, and we did. I had done a deal with Atlantic with Jerry. They said, "Go on in and do it," so I asked everybody - I asked Jim, Carl, Klaus Voorman, George Harrison, Bobby Keys, Delaney and Bonnie, Eric - I asked everybody I'd ever done anything with to give me a hand with this thing, so my first record was really Derek and the Dominos."
