THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA - Take The High Road (2011)

Five-time Grammy Award winners The Blind Boys of Alabama's amazing spirit and soul is celebrated through songs as they team up with country music royalty to release TAKE THE HIGH ROAD, a powerful new album that explores the deep connections between traditional country and gospel music. Jamey Johnson, currently one of country music's most acclaimed and compelling artists, co-produced the album and performs on it along with guest artists Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., Lee Ann Womack and The Oak Ridge Boys. This amazing country roster is further backed by an A-list of top Nashville studio musicians, with the result a stunning and powerful testament to the historic relationship between these genres. The concept for the collaboration started with original Blind Boy Jimmy Carter's longstanding love of country music and his desire to do a traditional country-tinged gospel album. The idea blossomed when the Blind Boys were asked to curate a series of shows, including a country gospel night, at the prestigious Lincoln Center Festival last year, and was further ignited when the band met Johnson at the 2010 Alabama Music Hall of Fame dinner in Birmingham where they asked him to participate in the new album. The result is a remarkable recording of 13 songs, some time-tested and some brand new. - amazon.com

V.A. - Blackmore's Castle: A Tribute To Deep Purple & Rainbow Vol.1 & Vol.2 (2003/05)

2003 - Vol.1
The opener by Mister Kite is a perfect start because they play Bloodsucker in a contemporary nu metal version. I also like Perfect Strangers by Transcendence who convince with a bombastic modern rock version of this 80s classic by Deep Purple. Arabesque play Stargazer and are one of the two bands with female vocals on this tribute CD. Singer Katia Salemi has great vocals which makes this another highlight. Unfortunately the album gets worse after such a promising start. While playing Self Portrait, Lars Eric Mattson just doesn't seem very motivated. And his song is much too slow. Reign Of Terror's Sixteenth Century Greensleeves annoys with a long and boring intro and their retro song is sounding too much like the original. My favourite Rainbow song is still Gates Of Babylon. Although I was looking forward to listen to Iron Mask's version, I was disappointed because their interpretation is just too fast. Headline are the other band with female vocals and they present a more progressive version of Battle Rages On. Well done! Condition Red got the award for the worst singer on this compilation. Although the folky arrangements are ok, I prefer pushing the skip button on the CD player. Space Truckin by Torben Enevolden is an excellent timeless rock song. Very curious is Eric Zimmermann's Man On The Silver Mountain. Voices and instruments are very distorted, wrapped in a bizarre Amiga sound. I think it's cool, but probably even the smallest Blackmore fan will call this a blasphemy. At this point, you could stop listening to the album. Winterlog's Highway Star is sounding absolutely uninspired, a one-to-one clone of the original. Then there are two boring and superfluous instrumentals: Lazy by Jason Richardson and Still I'm Sad by Condition Red.
TRACKS:
01. Mister Kite - Bloodsucker 02. Transcendence – Perfect Strangers 03. Arabesque – Stargazer 04. Lars Eric Mattsson – Self Portrait 05. Reign of Terror – Sixteenth Century Greensleeves 06. Iron Mask – Gates of Babylon 07. Headline – Battle Rages On 08. Condition Red – Black Night 09. Torben Enevolden – Space Truckin’ 10. Eric Zimmermann – Man on the Silver Mountain 11. Winterlong – Highway Star 12. Jason Richardson – Lazy 13. Condition Red – Still I’m Sad

2005 - Vol.2
The second Lion Music tribute to Ritchie Blackmore is solid as a rock. Sometimes artists take the fact that they are reproducing the work of a legend very seriously, and in the case of Blackmore’s Castle Volume II, it shows. The CD starts out with the Deep Purple classic, “Stormbringer,” where Domain brings the song into the 21st Century with space-age keyboard work, yet still show it the proper respect it deserves by lacing it with solid guitar play. The next track is the best on the album, as Michael Harris plays “Lady Of the Lake” outstandingly while respecting the original composition and doing a solid job of reproducing Blackmore and Dio. Another track that rocks you to the core is the House of Shakira cover of the classic “Starstruck.” The guitars wail their deep dark Rainbow sounds through power riffs and solos alike. “Kill The King,” covered by Baltimoore, is a solid shred session of beautiful axe play. There actually isn’t a bad song on the album. All take extra care to play their respective guitar pieces in an honest and soulful tribute to Blackmore’s magic. An album like this not only makes a person wonder why they are not more familiar with the original artists work, but also shows the talent of the replicating artists. Blackmore turns 60 on April 14, and this is a solid birthday tribute.
TRACLS:
01. Domain – Stormbringer 02. Michael Harris – Lady of the Lake 03. Dogpound – Mary Long 04. Orion Riders – Burn 05. Daniel Flores and Friends - I Surrender 06. Baltimoore – Kill the King 07. Rolf Munkes/Gerald Kloos – All Night Long 08. Man on Fire – Maybe a Leo 09. Chris Catena – Mistreated 10. House of Shakira – Lady Starstruck 11. Takara – Can’t Let You Go 12. Chris Heaven – Soldier of Fortune

V.A. - 35 Years Of Stony Plain (2011)

Every five years, for the last twenty, Stony Plain Records has released an amazing compilation of music. Now with 35 Years Of Stony Plain, we once again are treated to another treasure chest of great music from Canada's Premier Roots, Rock, Country, and Blues Label. 35 Years Of Stony Plain, consists of two CD's and a Bonus DVD. The album "was produced by Brian Ahern and recorded between 1971 and 1974. With background vocals supplied by Anne Murray and Emmylou Harris, this is a little-known masterpiece. Apparently 25,000 copies were pressed but never left the warehouse due to legal problems, and didn't get much attention until 1984 when Holger Petersen obtained rights to release the album on Stony Plain." CD two contains 5 previously unreleased songs, which include a song by King Biscuit Boy and four songs from Robert Nighthawk, which were part of a 1965 Toronto Session. MATTHEW SWEET & SUSANNA HOFFS - Under The Covers Vol.1 & Vol. 2

2006 - Under The Covers Vol.1
Sid (Matthew Sweet, after his character's name in the Austin Powers band Ming Tea) and Susie (Susanna Hoffs, who joined him and Mike Myers in belting out "BBC" on the soundtrack) are in as fine voice as ever on Under the Covers, Vol. 1, a 15-song collection of tunes first made famous by the likes of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Mamas and the Papas, and the Who. And man, were they born to sing this stuff. Both the Bangles and Sweet discographies are derivative--in the best possible sense--of late-'60s pop-rock, and who didn't love the Merry-Go-Round, Grass Roots, Simon & Garfunkel, and Big Star covers Hoffs and company scattered among their originals? Recorded at Sweet's home studio in the Hollywood Hills, the album opens strong with "I See the Rain," a Marmalade song from 1967 that Jimi Hendrix called the year's best British single but was a hit only in the Netherlands. Maybe Sweet's stinging, ringing fretwork (he plays most of the non-percussion instruments on this disc) and Hoffs's throwback vocals will rectify that, nearly 40 years later. The two proceed to nail the Beatles' "And Your Bird Can Sing," one of the high points on Revolver, and score similarly with Fairport Convention's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" (Hoffs in full ballad mode), the Stone Poneys' "Different Drum," the Who's "The Kids Are Alright," Love's "Alone Again Or," and a pair of Neil Young numbers, "Cinnamon Girl" and "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere." Some of the selections do miss the mark--Hoffs's smoky-sweet backing vocals seem a little misplaced on Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," and "The Warmth of the Sun" was probably the wrong Beach Boys track for Sweet to attempt (Brian Wilson himself strains at those high notes nowadays). But by and large this is a delightful power-pop excursion. Van Dyke Parks's liner notes, keyboards, and string arrangements make it that much better, as do Sweet collaborator Ric Menck's drums, Ed Fotheringham's illustrations, and Henry Diltz's photographs (Hoffs looks as stunning today as she did when laying down All Over the Place). - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. I See the Rain (The Marmalade) 02. And Your Bird Can Sing (The Beatles) 03. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (Bob Dylan) 04. Who Knows Where The Time Goes? (Fairport Convention) 05. Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young and Crazy Horse) 06. Alone Again Or (Love) 07. The Warmth of the Sun (The Beach Boys) 08. Different Drum (Stone Poneys feat. Linda Ronstadt) 09. The Kids Are Alright (The Who) 10. Sunday Morning (The Velvet Underground) 11. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (Neil Young and Crazy Horse) 12. Care of Cell #44 (The Zombies) 13. Monday, Monday (The Mamas & the Papas) 14. She May Call You up Tonight (The Left Banke) 15. Run to Me (Bee Gees)

2009 - Under The Covers Vol.2
Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs delighted rock and pop fans when they teamed up as Sid 'n Susie to record an album's worth of '60s classics called Under the Covers Vol. 1. Now, three years later, Under the Covers Vol. 2 finds our heroes moving forward through rock's back pages to take on another decade: the '70s. From power-pop like The Raspberries and Big Star to the soft-rock of Carly Simon and Bread, and from the classic-rock of John Lennon and Derek and the Dominos to the prog-rock of Yes, Sid 'n Susie offer a pretty thorough survey of the state of rock, just before the Sex Pistols. Features guest appearances by Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, Steve Howe of Yes, and George Harrison's son, Dhani Harrison. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. Sugar Magnolia (Grateful Dead) 02. Go All the Way (Raspberries) 03. Second Hand News (Fleetwood Mac) 04. Bell Bottom Blues (Derek and the Dominos) 05. All the Young Dudes (Mott the Hoople) 06. You're So Vain (Carly Simon) 07. Here Comes My Girl (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) 08. I've Seen All Good People: Your Move/All Good People (Yes) 09. Hello It's Me (Todd Rundgren) 10. Willin' (Little Feat) 11. Back of a Car (Big Star) 12. Couldn't I Just Tell You (Todd Rundgren) 13. Gimme Some Truth (John Lennon) 14. Maggie May (Rod Stewart) 15. Everything I Own (Bread) 16. CARLY SIMON - Never Been Gone (2009)

Carly Simon's latest album isn't exactly a best of, although it features several of the songs previously collected in Simon's four other hits compilations. Nor is it a live album, yet it frequently sounds like one, thanks to the intimacy of the pared-back performances (you can even hear Simon giggle as she fluffs the beginning to It Happens Every Day). Its hybrid format allows Simon to revisit the songs of her youth in illuminating and poignant ways: a twentysomething's misgivings about marriage in That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be are imbued with weariness when delivered by a woman in her 60s; similarly, the clinging to hope in the face of marital breakdown expressed in Coming Around Again is more melancholy coming from someone twice divorced. On the downside, age has corroded Simon's voice, and there is an acoustic dourness to many of the new arrangements – except those, like You're So Vain, that try so hard to startle that they sound a bit crass.- guardian.co.uk

thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup COLD CHISEL thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Before his successful solo career, Australian pop icon Jimmy Barnes was a part of this hard rocking Adelaide group; this album includes their hits "Goodbye (Astrid Goodbye)" and "Khe Sahn," along with fourteen other driving tracks. Cold Chisel started life as just another pub rock band, but it finished as one of Australia's all-time greatest acts. This disc provides the perfect retrospective of one of the seminal Australian acts of the early '80s. Cold Chisel was a band that was able to rock hard, but it also showed a deceptive depth and perceptiveness in their lyrics. They managed to record songs that covered not only a range of styles but a full range of emotions, from the bitter "You Got Nothing I Want" to the tender "Choir Girl." They wrote tales of drunken excesses ("Cheap Wine") and resigned sadnesses ("Flame Trees"), and their superb ode to a returned Vietnam War veteran, "Khe Sanh," is a song that will forever epitomize this period of Australian music. While the drug and alcohol excesses of Cold Chisel and their lead singer Jimmy Barnes are the stuff of legend, their music never suffered for it. These songs are classics, and to have them all collected here makes this disc nothing short of sublime. - cduniverse.com

GEORDIE - The Best [3CD BOX SET] (2011)

Geordie were a British rock band from Newcastle upon Tyne, England, most notably active in the 1970s. The original (from February, 1972) line-up included: Vic Malcolm (born Albert Victor Malcolm, 3 December 1946, Newcastle upon Tyne) (lead guitar, vocals), Tom Hill (bass guitar), Brian Gibson (drums) (born 6 March 1951, Newcastle upon Tyne) and Brian Johnson (vocals). Their first single, "Don't Do That" broke into the UK Top 40 in December 1972. In March 1973, Geordie released their debut album, Hope You Like It on EMI's Regal Zonophone label. Trying to compete with such British glam rock outfits as Slade and Sweet (Geordie supported the former on a UK tour, as well as the latter at a concert at the Rainbow Club, London in March 1973), they had several UK Top 10 hit, "All Because Of You" (April 1973) and several UK Top 20 hit, "Can You Do It" (July 1973) and several appearances on BBC Television including Top of the Pops in November 1972. But their second album, Don't Be Fooled By The Name (1974), including a cover of The Animals' "House Of The Rising Sun" failed to yield a hit. After their 1976 album Save The World, frontman Johnson left for a solo project. The band's final album, No Good Woman, in 1978 consisted of three unreleased tracks with Johnson and new material recorded by Malcolm with future Dire Straits keyboardist Alan Clark, vocalist Dave Ditchburn, bassist Frank Gibbon, and drummer George Defty. Johnson had meanwhile begun to perform as Geordie in a new line-up in which he was the only original member. The band signed a recording contract in 1980, but finally folded that spring when Johnson became a member of AC/DC to replace the late Bon Scott.

JOURNEY - Eclipse (2011) thumbup

Journey was formed by Santana manager Walter “Herbie” Herbert in 1973 and found most success in the 70s with classic rock tracks including “Don’t Stop Believing”, “Separate Ways”, “Faithfully” and “Open Arms”. Their first albums, Journey, Look Into the Future and Next, were notable for their excellent musicianship but failed to secure the success they were hoping for. So Journey made an effort to move into more commercial waters, trying to replicate the successes of Foreigner and Boston.

Eclipse (sometimes stylized as ECL1P53) is the fourteenth studio album by American rock band Journey, and the second with Filipino lead singer Arnel Pineda. Penned by Neal Schon, Arnel Pineda and Jonathan Cain. It was released in the United States and Canada on May 24, 2011 exclusively at Walmart, internationally on May 27, 2011, the United Kingdom on May 30, 2011 and Japan on June 1, 2011.

RORY GALLAGHER - Notes From San Francisco (2011) thumbup

In 1977, Rory Gallagher entered a San Francisco studio and recorded a whole album's worth of material. The album was eventually shelved, as Rory explained to a journalist in the early 90's, because 'maybe eighty percent of the San Francisco album could come out in some form - remixed. The problem was, the mixing was getting complicated and some of the songs (just didn't sound right).' For the first time, the recordings from this session will see the light of day on the 2-CD package Notes From San Francisco.

The first disc features the results of this recording session. The version of 'Overnight Bag' that appears on here first appeared on the Rory Gallagher Crest of a Wave 2-CD compilation. The lineup for the studio sessions consists of Rory Gallagher (guitars/ Vocals), Gerry McAvoy (bass), Lou Martin (piano / keyboards), Rod de'Ath (drums), Joe O'Donnell (violin on 'Mississippi Sheiks') and Martin Fiero (Saxophone on 'Rue The Day' and 'Brute Force & Ignorance').

Disc 2 consists of a massively energetic live concert recorded in December of 1979 at The Old Waldorf in San Francisco. The lineup for this show features Rory on guitar & vocals, Gerry McAvoy on bass and Ted McKenna on drums.

DISC 1:
01. Rue the Day 02. Persuasion 03. B Girl 04. Mississippi Sheiks 05. Wheels Within Wheels 06. Overnight Bag 07. Cruise On Out 08. Brute Force & Ignorance 09. Fuel to the Fire 10. Wheels Within Wheels (Alt version) 11. Cut A Dash 12. Out on the Tiles

THE ROLLING STONES - The Singles 1971-2006 [45CD Box Set] (2011)

In every single way, The Rolling Stones are the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band In The World. They created the blueprint for guitar groups. They took rock'n'roll rebellion to new heights. They were the first band to master the art of playing arenas and effortlessly move into stadiums, and have remained the world's top concert attraction with every successive record-breaking tour. They made some of the most influential albums of the late sixties and early seventies. But, above all, they have consistently recorded the most exciting singles made by any artist. Not in any era, but in every era.

Lavishly packaged, The Rolling Stones Singles (1971-2006) box set collects the amazing run of forty-five 45s the group has issued over the last four decades. Amongst many gems, it includes US chart-toppers such as the irresistible 'Brown Sugar', the beautiful ballad 'Angie' and the floor-filler par excellence 'Miss You', as well as the infectious rockers 'Mixed Emotions' and 'Don't Stop'. The box set also highlights the band's rock and roll and rhythm'n'blues roots, and showcases their wonderful cover versions of Chuck Berry's 'Let It Rock', the Temptations' 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg', Smokey Robinson and The Miracles' 'Going to a Go-Go', Bob & Earl's 'Harlem Shuffle' and Bob Dylan's 'Like A Rolling Stone'. And it brings the group's compelling story up to date with the soulful 'Streets Of Love', 'Rain Fall Down' and 'Biggest Mistake', their most recent studio recordings. Time and again, The Rolling Stones Singles (1971-2006) demonstrates why they are the ultimate singles band. More than any other act, The Rolling Stones understand the immediacy and the potency of the format. Their timeless music has often been at its most exhilarating blaring out of juke-boxes or car radios, or booming out of nightclubs speakers, but it has also sound-tracked many a slow dance or first kiss and still adds drama and layers of meaning to a myriad films and TV programs. The set comes in a striking pink box featuring the band's trademark tongue design, styled on the original 7” ‘house-sleeves’. It's overflowing with all-time classic hits, collectable B-sides and hidden gems. Across 45 CDs, lovingly recreating the original releases in miniature picture sleeves, it contains 173 tracks, 80 of which are not currently available officially. The box also houses a 32-page hardback book packed with memorabilia, period photos and a new essay by renowned journalist, broadcaster and Rolling Stones expert Paul Sexton, as well as an exclusive new interview with Bill Wyman, the band's former bassist and on-going archivist. Many people have specific memories attached to certain Rolling Stones singles and will enjoy reliving them all over again. Many music fans have been trying to replace dog-eared copies of the original 7” and 12” vinyl singles and will love reconnecting with old friends. Many collectors will relish the opportunity to have every single mix and permutation of tracks released on various formats throughout the heady days of the seventies, eighties, nineties and noughties readily available in this sumptuous package.

THE WHO - Icon 2 (2011)

One of the most explosive and kinetic bands to come out of Britain in the mid-'60s, the Who, led by the songwriting genius of Pete Townshend, the frontman skills of Roger Daltrey, and an exciting, powerful rhythm section of drummer Keith Moon and bassist John Entwistle, had quirky pop smarts and a full sense of rock & roll as both a redemptive and destructive force. This two-disc set collects two dozen of the band’s hits, including “I Can’t Explain,” “My Generation,” the impressive “I Can See for Miles,” “Pinball Wizard,” the cynical but ever hopeful “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” the gorgeous “The Kids Are Alright,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Love Reign O’er Me,” and the late, left-field hit “Eminence Front,” among others. It all adds up to a concise and breezy survey of one of the most creative and fun bands rock & roll has produced. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - Chicago Blues: A Living History (2008)

"Chicago Blues: A Living History" is a new landmark double CD tribute to the past, present and future of the Chicago Blues. The first Chicago Blues recording of its kind, "A Living History" features four of the greatest living Chicago Blues traditionalists from two different generations: Billy Boy Arnold, John Primer, Billy Branch and Lurrie Bell (with special guests Carlos Johnson and Mike Avery). This recording allows the listener to hear the evolution of the Chicago Blues sound from 1940 to the present as performed by the genre's greatest living artists, who are the inheritors of the tradition. This is an amazing release by some of the greatest Blues artists alive. Fantastic production, detailed liner notes and most importantly incredible Chicago Blues performances captured in the studio. Billy Boy Arnold, John Primer, Lurrie Bell, and Billy Branch are all in fine form displaying why they are at the top of the Mountain of the Blues right now, but also the performances by the other musicians involved (Billy Flynn, Kenny Smith, Felton Crews, Matthew Skoller, Johnny Iguana) display why they are considered some of the best on their respective instruments, as well. - amazon.com

We are waiting "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs: The 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" - in the meantime.....

DEREK & THE DOMINO[E?]S - Layla And Other Assorted Unreleased Songs (1993)

Derek & The Dominos’ Layla and Other Assorted Love Songswas such a brilliant, yet short lived project, which certainly deserved the three disc box set treatment in 1990 for its twentieth anniversary. It presented the greatness of this outfit as a jamming band. Several years later Layla & Other Assorted Unreleased Songs (Yellow Dog Records YD 040) surfaced with even more unreleased outtakes from the two official Derek & The Domino’s releases (Layla and Live at the Fillmore) and tracks from the unfinished second album. Extract Factory have re-released the old Yellow Dog title. The sound quality is still excellent and the relevancy of the outtakes make this remain an essential Eric Clapton title for the collection. The first two tracks are from the studio album. “Layla” is complete but is out of tune, and “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out” is an alternate mix compared to the commercial version with a false start. Following are three live tracks from the Fillmore East shows in New York on October 23rd, 1970. “Key To The Highway,” “Little Wing” and “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out” are all professionally mixed, but were not included on the original In Concert LP released in 1973. A year after Yellow Dog released this disc, Polydor updated the live album and issued the 2CD Live At The Fillmore on February 22, 1994. These three songs were included, but the three on Yellow Dog are from October 23rd. Polydor utilized ”Key To The Highway” and ”Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out” from October 24th. Two songs, ”It’s Too Late, She’s Gone” and “Got To Get Better In A Little While” come from “The Johnny Cash Show.” This was taped on November 5th, 1970 at the Ryman Auditiorium in Nashville. Derek & The Dominos also played “Blues Power” and jammed with Carl Perkins on “Matchbox” but they aren’t included. The final five tracks come from the sessions for the aborted second album in April to May, 1971. All are instrumentals and are in various states of development. ”Son Of Apache,” with it’s vague American Indian sounding melody, is the more adventurous of the lot. The others are variations upon basic blues chords and melodies. Extract Factory use high quality inserts (as they do with all their releases) and makes available a title that is still valuable and worth having.

LEVON HELM - Ramble At The Ryman (2011) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Levon Helm was more than just a drummer, singer, and mandolinist for The Band. He was the group’s very soul, and not just because of the loamy rural tenor made famous by songs like “The Weight.” As the only actual Southerner in a Canadian outfit that mythologized the American South, Helm shouldered the load of a nostalgic yet troubled history that was, for his compatriots, mostly a dream. You could almost hear this existential burden in his weary yet unbowed style of drumming—a little behind the beat, as if life were always moving faster than he’d like. On live disc Ramble at the Ryman, with a characteristically exuberant blend of rock, blues, country, and folk, Helm proves himself once again to be one of our most vibrant conservators of traditional Americana.

TRACKS:
01. Ophelia 02. Back To Memphis 03. Fannie Mae 04. Baby Scratch My Back 05. Evangeline 06. No Depression In Heaven 07. Wide River To Cross 08. Deep Elem Blues 09. Anna Lee 10. Rag Mama Rag 11. Time Out For The Blues 12. A Train Robbery 13. The Shape I'm In 14. Chest Fever 15. The Weight

JOHN MARTYN - In Session (2006)

There's been an embarassment of riches for the hardcore John Martyn fan of late, and whaddya know, here's some more. In Session contains all the songs our John recorded for the Bob Harris and John Peel shows between 1973 and 1978, and though some of these performances are available elsewhere, this is an essential purchase for the committed fan. Though consistency was (and is) never one of Martyn's strong points, it would seem that he did make a bit more of an effort when he was in front of a BBC microphone, judging by this set of performances. Most are solo; four tracks add the peerless double bass of Mr Danny Thompson, though annoyingly he's barely audible (what were the engineers thinking?). Martyn's tendency to improvise means that even his most straightahead acoustic songs (like "May You Never" or "Spencer The Rover") have new life breathed into them every time he sings them. From the 1973 sessions "I'd Rather be The Devil" and "Outside In" (both mysteriously retitled here) take things further out with some typically cosmic guitar explorations; you get the sense that at this point in Martyn's career, each performance was as much about self discovery as anything else. The set closes with the glorious "Small Hours", which sounds like it was recorded yesterday afternoon rather than nearly 30 years ago. Essential stuff from probably the most fruitful period in Martyn's career. - amazon.com

PICKIN' ON - The Best of Pickin' on Eric Clapton (2007)

01. Track List
02. Sunshine of Your Love
03. After Midnight
04. Cocaine
05. Change the World
06. Tears in Heaven
07. Promises
08. Wonderful Tonight
09. Layla
10. Lay Down Sally
11. I Shot the Sheriff
12. Strange Brew
13. Crossroads (Cross Road Blues)
14. Tulsa Time
15. White Room

Because reverence means versions of songs in alternate genres, Best of Pickin' on Eric Clapton covers 14 of Slowhand's biggest hits, including "Cocaine," "Lay Down Sally," "Tears in Heaven," and "I Shot the Sheriff." You gotta be a big star to have that done. It's all a little corny, but the songs are well played, with plenty of banjo and fiddle, and they're good for foot-stomping or singing along to, which is as much as anyone could want from an album like this, anyway. - All Music Guide

SHAWN PITTMAN - Edge Of The World (2011)

Shawn Pittman's Delta Groove debut showcases a rising star at the peak of his powers. Edge Of The World marks his 10th release and contains an inspired program of original material by an accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist, recalling all the vintage tones and ambiance of the great blues recordings of the 1950's & '60's. Even more astonishing is the fact that Shawn plays virtually every instrument on the CD, handling everything from vocals and guitar, to bass, drums and piano, on top of doubling as the album's producer and engineer! Jonathan Doyle represents the album's only other personnel by contributing tenor & baritone saxophone on 4 songs. - amazon.com

BIG SHANTY - Collection (2011)

“Got my own way/and it works just fine.” So growls Big Shanty amid the greasy funk blues of “Stop Pushing Me,” second cut on the first of this two-disc, 19-song overview of his impressive musical endeavors. Well, it has indeed worked out just fine for the big man since he stormed into the blues world with 2004’s World of Trouble and has continued marching on like Sherman to the sea, adopting a strictly scorched earth policy as he goes. A triple-threat writer/singer/slide guitarist, Shanty attacks most of his songs with impunity and a foul disposition, because this is serious business indeed. You can tell that much from the howling slide sorties and in-your-face vocal report to a wayward woman marking his punishing, Hendrix-like “They Say It’s Raining” (disc one). He may turn down the heat a bit on something such as “Got a Hold On Me,” in which both his dark, ominous voice and spacey guitar evoke the specter of the Doors at their finest; and on “World of Trouble,” he goes deep into the heart of a broken-hearted melody of a blues ballad, his voice full of the pain of betrayal, his stinging guitar adding a second, aggrieved voice to his own. He prefers, however, to get off simmer quickly and unequivocally. Disc one shows what he has done with mostly a basic band behind him—the occasional horn section or synth will show up—and thus showcases the variety of blues and blues-inflected styles over which he exercises complete dominion. A special treat in this set is the fevered, pumping, ‘50s-style musical orgy he engages in on a saucy, braggadocio-filled come-on, “Right Combination,” a crispy live track that gets some added oomph courtesy Phil Davis’s rollicking keyboards, Rick Phillips’s rumbling bass sax and a tart, electrifying Eddie Jett guitar solo complementing Big Shanty’s feisty vocal.

DISC 1: 01. Whisky Woman 02. Stop Pushing Me 03. They Say It's Raining 04. Got A Hold On Me 05. Queen of Hearts Has Disappeared 06. Right Combination 07. World of Trouble 08. Smoke and Mirrors 09. 100 Pound Hammer

Recorded during the 2010 Legendary Blues Cruise, the album features blues veteran Finis Tasby (Lowell Fulson, Freddie King, Clarence Carter, Z.Z. Hill), fast-rising harmonica man John Németh (Anson Funderburgh, Junior Watson), Norwegian blues guitar star Chris (Kid) Anderson (Charlie Musselwhite's band), and Bishop's long-time band-mate and Bay Area legend, saxophonist Terry Hanck. And it really is a "revue" in the classic sense of the term - various band members representing a wide array of styles move in and out of the spotlight, including swinging up-tempo R&B, lowdown blues, rootsy rock ’n’ roll, and a touch of gospel; even a reworking of Bishop's smash hit "Fooled Around and Fell in Love". - jambase.com

PAUL KOSSOFF WITH BLACK CAT BONES - Paul's Blues (2008)

2008 two CD set contains the earliest known recordings of Paul Kossoff, whose tragic death in 1976 robbed the Rock world of one of its finest-ever Blues guitarists. Taped at rehearsals with Black Cat Bones in London in 1967, the raw, lo-fi tracks find the teenager already a master of his instrument. Accompanied by musicians including Derek and Stuart Brookes (later to form the legendary Leaf Hound), and featuring a guest appearance from Paul Rodgers (later to form Free with Kossoff), the recordings are of considerable historical importance. They are released here for the very first time, along with a booklet featuring rare photographs, full liner notes and an introduction from the bands drummer, Frank Perry, making the album an essential purchase for all serious Rock fans. - amazon.com

PACIIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC - Are You Ready & Pacific Gas And Electric (1997)

Pacific Gas & Electric were an American blues rock band in the late 1960s and early 1970s, led by singer Charlie Allen. This double-disc set brings together the first two albums by California blues-rock outfit Pacific Gas & Electric. Led by soul belter Charlie Allen and former James Gang guitar wizard Glenn Beck, the band played a mix of R&B covers and originals, heavy on showmanship and west coast groove. Though PC&G 's music might not have been quite as interesting as the drama that surrounded them (which included born-again proselytizing and cult deprogramming), they were a solid unit capable of turning out heavy blues on par with the biggest names of the day.

THE OZARK MOUNTAIN DAREDEVILS - The Ozark Mountain Daredevils [1973] & It'll Shine When It Shines [1974]

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils were among the more popular of mid-'70s country-rock outfits, slotting in chronologically and stylistically between the Eagles and Firefall. As exponents of '70s country-rock, the group rode a wave of success for five years on A&M Records and survived in some form into the 1990s, with a following just large enough to justify occasional record releases in their later years. The sextet was formed in Missouri during the early '70s, consisting of guitarists John Dillon and Steve Cash, blues harpist/singer/guitarist Randle Chowning, drummer/guitarist/singer Larry Lee, keyboard player Buddy Brayfield, and bassist-vocalist Michael Granda, and was signed to A&M Records in 1973. Their first album, recorded under the supervision of producer Glyn Johns (who had also worked with the Eagles), was a critical success and yielded a Top 30 hit in "If You Want to Get to Heaven." A year later, they had the biggest hit in their history, "Jackie Blue," a mellow piece of country-rock that got to number three on the charts and still gets played occasionally as a '70s oldie. They had an ethereal edge to their sound and songs that made them especially appealing to college-age listeners during the middle of the decade. Their self-titled debut album set the tone for the group's next four releases, although by 1978's Don't Look Down, the sound was somewhat closer to country-pop than country-rock. - allmusic.com

WILLIE NELSON & WYNTON MARSALIS feat. NORAH JONES - Here We Go Again (2011)

Once in a while the stars align and something magical happens...as on the night Jazz at Lincoln Center presented a salute to the late, great bluesman, Ray Charles. Two musical iconoclasts, Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis, along with the stunning songstress Norah Jones, collectively brought their unique musical perspective to the legendary artist's hits such as "Hallelujah I Love Her So", "Hit the Road Jack," and "Unchain My Heart." Country music legend Willie Nelson and Pulitzer Prize-winning jazz artist and Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis share more in common than their multiple GRAMMY® awards. They also share great respect and admiration for the late musical pioneer Ray Charles. Nelson and Marsalis joined musical forces for a two-night Jazz at Lincoln Center concert event at New York City's Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Their set list explored the legacy of Charles, cleverly sequencing the songs to tell the story of a love affair from beginning to end and beyond. This fine idea was made finer by the inclusion of fellow multiple GRAMMY® winner Norah Jones, whose style sests a middle ground between Nelson and Marsalis. The sold out performance was captured and the resulting footage expertly mixed and mastered for the brand new album. - amazon.com

BOOKER T. JONES - The Road From Memphis (2011)

Booker T. Jones' historic life in music has brought him international fame, awards (he’s a three-time Grammy winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer), and iconic status as one of the architects of American soul music. With his new album "The Road From Memphis" Jones traces his journey from his hometown of Memphis, TN to the world stage. The album follows Jones' 2009 Anti- release "Potato Hol"e which won the Grammy for “Best Pop Instrumental Album." Produced by Jones with The Roots' Questlove and Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliot Smith), Memphis was recorded by Daptone Records mastermind Gabriel Roth with backing by The Roots. The Road from Memphis refers not only to Booker T's journey but to the evolution of the soul music he helped invent as it traveled from Memphis to Detroit, Philadelphia and beyond. The music's many iterations are represented here with a broad range of guest vocalists including Matt Berninger of the National and Sharon Jones on "Representing Memphis," Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket on "Progress" and Lou Reed on "The Bronx." The album also features a rare vocal from Jones himself offering a first-hand look at his hometown on "Down in Memphis." Legendary motor-city guitarist Dennis Coffey contributes to the album as well.

01. Walking Papers 02. Crazy 03. Progress (feat. Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket) 04. The Hive 05. Down In Memphis (feat. Booker T. on vocals) 06. Everything Is Everything 07. Rent Party 08. Black Country Communion, the Anglo-American classic rock group featuring the talents of blues rock guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa, bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Trapeze), drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin), and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater), has announced the title of their much-anticipated second album. The album will be called “2” and will be released in the UK on June 13th via Mascot Records, followed by a US release on June 14th on the J&R Adventures label. When the band performed in the heart of the Black Country at Wolverhmapton’s Civic Hall in front of a 3,000 strong crowd on Dec. 29, 2010, the Birmingham Mail newspaper described the band’s performance as “rip-roaring” and “breathtaking, while the Express & Star newspaper said, “From the moment Hughes’ thunderous bass riff introduced ‘Black Country’ it was like a torch had been lit underneath the famous old venue, the ghosts of rock Christmases past roaring into the present!” Black Country Communion released its self-titled debut album in September 2010 to rave reviews. Mojo magazine gave the album four stars and Classic Rock magazine said it’s “Possibly, the best hard rock album of 2010.” Music Radar described it as “a potent and stomping collection of riff-heavy rockers that will undoubtedly stun listeners.”

During its first week of release in the UK, the album hit the #1 spot in the Official Top 40 Rock Album Chart, and also hit #13 in the Official Top 40 Album Chart and #2 in the UK’s Official Top 40 Indie Album Chart. The album was voted #3 in Classic Rock magazine’s “Critics Album of the Year” poll, while Planet Rock radio listeners crowned BCC as the Best New Band of 2010. - noblepr.co.uk

V.A. - Blues Guitar Women (2005)

These two discs reflect, in their way, the incredibly rich, varied lineage of women in the blues. And of course, given the title, we're not talking about singers - though many of these women do sing. With liner notes by Sue Foley, who compiled the set, this collection reaches backward and forward to mirror back to the culture the wild, wooly underside of the blues via its female six-string slingers. There are relative newcomers like Laura Chavez (who plays with Lara Price), Finland's Erja Lyytinen, and Austin's Eve Monses; seasoned veterans like Alice Stuart, Foley, Debbie Davies, Jesse Mae Hemphill, Joann Kelly, Rory Block, Bonnie Raitt with Maria Muldaur, Ellen McIlwaine, the scorching Joanna Connor, Barbara Lynn; and the legendary Memphis Minnie, Etta Baker, Algia Mae Hinton, and Precious Bryant, just to name a few. From originals to blues standards, there's something for everyone here. What's most surprising is how little known so many of these fine performers are, and the way the heritage gets passed down, guitar to guitar for over 70 years. This is one for the shelf, folks. - cduniverse.com

FAIRPORT CONVENTION - Red & Gold (1988)

Fairport Convention are an English folk rock and later electric folk band, formed in 1967 who are still recording and touring today. They are widely regarded as the most important single group in the English folk rock movement. Though their most famous albums were over a decade past by the late '80s, Fairport Convention was still releasing albums that were good enough to convert new listeners. Red & Gold is a case in point, an assured and enjoyable album of the band's trademark mix of English folk and rock. Simon Nicol's vocal on the title cut is worth the price of the album by itself; it's as sure and passionate a track as he's ever cut, a sorrowful account of a great battle as seen by a peasant farmer who doesn't understand why it's all happening. In fact, the songs on this album all rank with the best of Fairport's later work. The only dud tracks are a pair of instrumentals that are curiously hectic and dense, with a strong emphasis on the midi guitar. Given that this was recorded when midi was a fairly new technology, it's hard not to conclude that the novelty of the sound led to its overuse. This is not to quibble, as least much, because there is much else on this album that makes it a very worthwhile listen.

01. Set Me Up 02. The Noise Club 03. Red & Gold 04. The Beggar's Song 05. The Battle 06. Dark Eyed Molly 07. The Rose Hip 08. London River 09. Summer Before The War 10. Open The Door Richard 11. Close to the Wind (Live)

V.A. - Lady Sings The Blues (2003)

No doubt influenced by the blockbuster commercial success of Norah Jones during 2002 (and her subsequent Grammy knockout in 2003), Capitol trawled through its considerable vaults to put together a two-disc collection of downbeat vocal jazz by females. Though it lacks an elegant booklet (with a Will Friedwald liner-note essay, perhaps?), everything else about Lady Sings the Blues is impressive. Concentrating on the '50s and '60s, though it includes much contemporary material as well (including Jones), the collection does make a few concessions to its intended market -- those seeking music similar to Norah Jones or Diana Krall -- but presents new and old with a sure sense of proper compiling and transition. Fortunately, not every inclusion is, in fact, a "blues"; the air could've become nearly suicidal over the course of nearly two hours. Instead, Lady Sings the Blues is occasionally broken up into mini-sets of love songs with the same solitary, late-night atmosphere: "You Go to My Head" by Keely Smith, "The Very Thought of You" by Nancy Wilson, "My Funny Valentine" by Dinah Shore, "It Had to Be You" by Kay Starr. Kudos also go to the compilers for their inclusion of vocalists who lack the artistic caché of a Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald; Shore, Starr, and Rosemary Clooney may be known better to cultural historians for their pop material, but they were all excellent in jazz modes, as they're captured here. Lacking any definitive performances, Lady Sings the Blues can't qualify as a first-purchase or a best-of-genre, but it is stunning in its own way, elegantly capturing standards and singers much better than they've been captured in the past.

GEORGE HARRISON - Brainwashed (2002)

Completed by George Harrison's son Dhani and Jeff Lynne (Traveling Wilburys, Cloud Nine) after the ex-Beatle succumbed to a long illness in November 2001, Brainwashed is a bittersweet reminder of the myriad contradictions that made Harrison such a compelling figure. One of the most warm, melodically rich albums in a career pockmarked by personal frankness and professional indifference in its latter years, Harrison finds rewarding ways here to reconcile bitter assessments of the material world (the title track) with more fleshy concerns, as his jaunty take on the Arlen-Koehler chestnut "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" ably demonstrates. Pushing the singer's distinctive dry voice to the forefront, and with Harrison's trademark slide guitar riffs as sinewy as ever, Lynne's showcase production is mostly spot-on and refreshingly restrained, while Dhani brings his own fresh, touchingly personal insights to the record. He double-tracked his own voice onto an old recording of his father chanting the traditional "Namah Parvati" and appended it as the album's spiritual benediction, a touching reminder that while musicians come and go, music can truly embody their spirit forever. - amazon.com

BOB DYLAN - Almost Went To See Elvis (1997) thumbup

This is an afternoon studio session between George Harrison, Bob Dylan and some friends at Columbia Studio B (NYC) on May 1, 1970 while Bob was drumming up material for his New Morning project. The sound quality is absolutely perfect in every respect. There are a few remarkable performances here, particularly Da-Doo-Run Run (Bob & George duet), the Everly Brothers' classic All I Have To Do Is Dream, Song To Woody, and the Beatles' Yesterday (which is hard to believe he actually sang!) Overall, it's a very enjoyable way to spend an hour. ”

All of the material here is from two consecutive sessions with George Harrison, with the master tapes reportedly missing from the Columbia archives. They are clearly the source of this recording (contrary to Possum Belly Overalls), and the music is very laidback but wonderful. Listen to Dylan mumbling his way through Cupid, while his rendition of Song to Woody is pretty mesmerising. One too many mornings and Your true love (the only song on which George Harrison's voice is actually audible) are the highlights of this set. George acted as a sideplayer rather than as a collaborator on these sessions, and it's the entertaining genius of Dylan that's mostly on display here.

JEFF LYNNE & FRIENDS - Every Little Thing (2010)

Following his stint as the leader of the Electric Light Orchestra, singer/guitarist Jeff Lynne forged an equally successful career in the '80s and '90s as a producer, with his distinctive sound gracing the latter-day records of many veteran rock & roll legends. Lynne began his career in the late '60s as the frontman of a group called the Idle Race, which recorded the album The Birthday Party for RCA in 1969. In 1970, Lynne accepted an invitation from Move leader Roy Wood to join his revamped band; the two shared a vision of fusing electric rock & roll with classical orchestrations, a concept that eventually transformed the Move into the Electric Light Orchestra (instead of the two groups running concurrently, as had originally been planned). The Lynne composition "Do Ya" provided the aggregation's first U.S. hit in 1973; Wood soon abdicated his share of the group's leadership to form Wizzard, leaving Lynne in charge. He ran the group into the '80s, scoring several U.S. Top Ten singles and albums and contributing to the soundtrack of the 1980 film Xanadu.

In the early '80s, Lynne's production career began to take off, as he worked with roots-rocker Dave Edmunds, Duane Eddy, and the Everly Brothers. Acclaimed work followed with George Harrison (1987's Cloud Nine), Brian Wilson, and Randy Newman. In 1988, Lynne participated in the Grammy-winning Traveling Wilburys supergroup; he soon produced fellow Wilburys Roy Orbison and Tom Petty on the critically and commercially successful Mystery Girl and Full Moon Fever, respectively. In 1990, Lynne released his first solo album, Armchair Theatre, and worked on the Wilburys' second album, Volume III. In recent years, Lynne's most prominent work has been with his main influences, the Beatles, on their Anthology series; the reconstructed "Free as a Bird" bore his unmistakable stamp, and he has also worked with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney (Flaming Pie) individually. - allmusic.com

Ronnie Earl is an astonishing technical guitarist. Even when he plays lightning-fast or oddly syncopated passages, his fingering is immaculate and his phrasing is sinuously fluid. Earl has never quite harnessed his rare ability, however. His tendency to overplay when he was a member of Roomful of Blues only got worse when he left to become his own bandleader. Grateful Heart: Blues & Ballads indulges the worst habit of such crossover-jazz projects: noodling. Earl and his bandmates meander through the chord changes with no emotional impetus behind them, no destination before them, and no hurry to get anywhere in particular. - amazon.com

RANDY NEWMAN - Guilty: 30 Years Of Randy Newman [Rhino] (1998)

Randall Stuart "Randy" Newman is an American singer/songwriter, arranger, composer, and pianist who is known for his mordant (and often satirical) pop songs and for film scores. Newman often writes lyrics from the perspective of a character far removed from Newman's own experiences. For example, the 1972 song "Sail Away" is written as a slave trader's sales pitch to attract slaves, while the narrator of "Political Science" is a U.S. nationalist who complains of worldwide ingratitude toward America and proposes a brutally ironic final solution. One of his biggest hits, "Short People" was written from the perspective of "a lunatic" who hates short people. Since the 1980s, Newman has worked mostly as a film composer. His film scores include Ragtime, Awakenings, The Natural, Leatherheads, James and the Giant Peach, Meet the Parents, Seabiscuit and The Princess and the Frog. He has scored six Disney-Pixar films: Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Cars and most recently Toy Story 3. He has been awarded two Academy Awards, three Emmys, five Grammy Awards, and the Governor's Award from the Recording Academy. Newman was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2007, Newman was inducted as a Disney Legend. In 2011, Newman won his second Oscar, for the song "We Belong Together" from Toy Story 3 at the 83rd Academy Awards.

This four-disc set fulfills two functions: on its first two discs, it provides the perfect guide for those uninitiated to Newman's world. The third disc of previously unreleased tracks and the fourth, containing selections from Newman's film scores, are aimed at the Newman completist. In both cases it works well. The songs on the first two discs are well chosen, perfectly illuminating the irony-drenched, cynical, but often humorous (however darkly) approach Newman always took to songwriting. On "Political Science" he mocks diplomatic relations, and on the beautiful, downcast "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" he quietly bemoans the state of humanity over a breathtaking melody. Listeners will be reminded that Newman shone as a melodist, belonging in the first rank of American composers alongside Gershwin and Stephen Foster. The rarities disc (which features both demo versions of familiar songs and tunes never heard on a Newman album in any form) will be the real draw for those who know and love Newman, and will further illuminate his legacy for those coming to this unparalleled artist's work for the first time.

Jennifer Warnes.....at the beginning of her career...

Jennifer Warnes has succeeded in a number of nearly unrelated areas of popular music - as a contemporary pop singer, as a country singer, as a singer of movie themes, and as an interpreter of the work of Leonard Cohen. She first came to public notice when she became a regular on the television show The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1967, under the name Jennifer Warren or simply Jennifer. In 1968, she was part of the original cast of the Los Angeles production of the musical Hair, and she signed to the Parrot Records subsidiary of London Records, which released her debut album, ...I Can Remember Everything. Her second album, See Me, Feel Me, Touch Me, Heal Me, appeared in 1969. Neither album was a commercial success, and she moved on to the Reprise division of Warner Bros.

1968 - " I Can Remember Everything": I Can Remember Everything the debut album by 21-year-old Jennifer (as she is billed) is a product of the eclectic pop trend of the late '60s, fostered by the Beatles' dabblings in music-hall whimsy and classical music on albums like Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Producer Martin Cooper favors arrangements beginning with isolated acoustic instruments - a bass or a conga drum or a harpsichord - to underlie Jennifer's alto, with strings or other instruments joining in as the song goes on. The selections include one each from the Bee Gees, Joni Mitchell, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, along with a clutch of mediocrities written by Cooper or published by Martin Cooper Music. Actually, though, Jennifer is less interesting on familiar tunes like "Chelsea Morning" and "Here, There and Everywhere," which she tends to over-sing in an affected way. On the forgettable stuff, she is more at ease, and the album demonstrates that she can be an effective, emotive interpreter, sometimes sesting Janis Ian, sometimes Petula Clark. - allmusic.com

01. Close Another Door 02. Sunny Day Blue 03. Here, There and Everywhere 04. Chelsea Morning 05. I Want To Meander In The Meadow 06. I Am Waiting 07. Places Everyone 08. Tree House Of Gold 09. It's Hard To Love A Poet 10. The Leaves 11. The Park

1969 - "See Me, Feel Me, Touch Me, Heal Me": By the time of the release of her second album, Jennifer (still going by only her first name), in addition to her appearances with the Smothers Brothers, had taken over a prominent role in the L.A. production of Hair, which Parrot Records played up by having her lead off the record with "Let the Sunshine In" (which, unlike the 5th Dimension, who scored a hit with it, she sang with the apocalyptic verses intact) and "Easy to Be Hard" from the musical. Guitarist/comedian Mason Williams, who had jumped to fame on the Smothers Brothers show with his instrumental hit "Classical Gas" (and featured Jennifer on his 1968 LP The Mason Williams Ear Show), turned up here to accompany her on his "Saturday Night at the World" and, of all things, an excerpt from Donizetti's Don Pasacale. Otherwise, producer Al Capps followed the first album formula of having Jennifer cover contemporary material, including songs by the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jacques Brel, and, as the title indicated, the finale from the Who's new rock opera Tommy. This time, though, the filler that marred the first album was gone, and Jennifer had grown as a singer primarily by learning not to over-sing. By toning down the histrionics, she sounded more involved emotionally, and with arrangements that had more of a rock edge, she even got to do some belting, which demonstrated the power of her voice. Like her first album, her second was not a popular success; unlike her first, it deserved to be. - allmusic.com

PROCOL HARUM - Greatest Hits 1967-2003 (2011)

The UK prog-rock band Procol Harum topped the UK charts for six weeks in 1967 with the Bach inspired "A Whiter Shade of Pale". From the ashes of the Paramounts and the Pinewoods, Procol Harum emerged. Their debut single, a classically-based piece, captured public imagination in a way that few singles do. "A Whiter Shade of Pale" spent over a month at the top of the UK charts and became a million-seller in the States. Meanwhile the band's debut gig was opening for Jimi Hendrix in London. With a start this good it was going to be hard to follow and even though subsequent releases didn't match the commercial success of their debut, they were considered to be amongst the best of the UK prog-rock movement. Their 1969 A Salty Dog album, and Procol Harum Live: in Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, both became firm favourites with fans and critics alike. The band split in 1977, the same year that "Whiter…" was named (along with "Bohemian Rhapsody"), by the BRIT Awards as the best British pop single from 1952 to 1977 (the dates relating to Queen Elizabeth's reign). Apart from occasional gigs, the band didn't get together again until 1990, when they recorded Prodigal Stranger. The album produced the Top 30-placed "All our Dreams are Sold", but neither fans or critics were totally convinced and the reunion was shortlived. A version of the band still tours today. - amazon.com

V.A - Bless You California: More Early Songs of Randy Newman (2010) thumbup

Randy Newman was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. When asked how he would like his plaque displayed, he replied, 'Carole King and Stevie Wonder on either side. And Irving Berlin above. It's a different story these days but in the years preceding his breakthrough as a performer in the mid-1970s the songs Newman wrote were recorded in the main by other artists. Our 2008 collection On Vine Street comprised material drawn from that formative first decade of his career. The positive response the CD received sested a second volume was warranted. Fortunately, he wrote enough songs during those hungry years to make one possible. Some acts - Nilsson, Harpers Bizarre, the Fleetwoods, Alan Price, Irma Thomas, his early songwriting partner Jackie DeShannon - are inextricably linked with Newman and make return appearances on Bless You California. The Fleetwoods' Ask Him If He's Got A Friend For Me, one of Randy's earliest recorded compositions, makes its debut CD appearance here, as do the tracks by Martin Denny, Johnny Shepard, Dick Lory (Dick Glasser), Peggy March, We Talkies, the Epics and Connie Stevens. - amazon.com

ABI WALLENSTEIN & JOJA WENDT thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Abi Wallenstein is a legendary figure among European blues artists. His unique style on the 8-string open tuned guitar and fascinating stage presence, coupled with his soulful vocals, give him an extraordinary ability to breathe new life into blues classics, as well as imbuing his original compositions with a rare authenticity. His playing has an effortless and natural quality which never fails to fascinate live audiences. Today he is one of the most highly regarded performers on the club and festival circuit, whether appearing alone, in duos, or with a band.

Joja Wendt is a pianist through and through, his concerts fill the largest concert halls. He is, without doubt, technically brilliant and driven when at his instrument. However, when he talks about his music, easily sitting back and yet elegant, it seems impossible that this man could ever get nervous. Even his small talk is ‚great entertainment’ - Joja Wendt is charming, attentive, articulate and quick-witted, in a word: poised. A characteristic that not only his audience appreciates. He has reached the point, where his name is used synonymously with that of his instrument: Joja Wendt = Piano.

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL - The Complete Hit Album Vol. 1 & 2 (1987)

Creedence Clearwater Revival (often known as just CCR) were a Californian band who were said to play a form of southern rock called 'swamp rock'. Led by John Fogerty, they had an incredible run of hits at their peak, scoring nine Top 10 hits between 1969 and 1971. Creedence had begun life in 1959 as The Blue Velvets and then The Golliwogs, without much success. In 1967 they changed their name, and the following year released a self-titled album Creedence Clearwater Revival, which featured a No.11 hit in “Suzie Q”. Follow-up Bayou Country went Top 10 and included the No.2 smash hit “Proud Mary”. Their third album Green River (1969) was widely praised and spun two hit singles, “Bad Moon Rising” and “Green River”, both of which matched “Proud Mary” in reaching No.2. Willy and the Poor Boys was another hit with critics and fans, spawning two more No.5 singles. Their fifth album, Cosmo’s Factory (1970) topped the album charts and produced an incredible five Top.5 singles. There is much debate among fans and critics about which of these three albums is their best, with Cosmo’s Factory perhaps slightly edging it with most listeners. After two more albums, the adventurous Pendulum (1970) and the disappointing Mardi Gras (1972), CCR broke up. - amazon.com

THE ROLLING STONES - Forty Licks [Exclusive Hardback Edition] (2002)

The band that proclaimed itself "The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World" has long since represented rock's most overarching confluence of art and commerce, with a distinct emphasis on the latter in recent decades, a notion this 40-track, five-decade-spanning anthology can't completely escape. While this is the first anthology to gather hits from the band's entire career, it's the early tunes that highlight one of the Stones' central ironies: virtually their entire "bad boy" reputation was built working for The Man. That original '60s musical arc bounded from '50s rock and R&B revivalism ("Not Fade Away," "The Last Time") to anti-Mop Top aggression ("Satisfaction," "Get Off My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown") to proto-goth cynicism ("Paint It Black," "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby") and psychedelic minstrelsy ("She's a Rainbow," "Ruby Tuesday") to the epitome of blues-based cock rock ("Street Fighting Man," "Jumpin' Jack Flash") in quick succession. Wresting control of their own destinies and future copyrights at the end of the '60s, they'd spend the next 30 years largely recycling their earlier incarnation ad infinitum their music sprinkled with occasionally successful forays into contemporary club and disco fodder ("Some Girls," "Shattered") and resting on their well-paid laurels. Unfortunately, the listless quartet of new tracks that flesh out this collection seems little more than another business deal to hype their 2002-03 world tour, with "Don't Stop" arguably the weakest in a long string of post-'80s Stones McSingles. If Jagger seems typically detached here, Keith Richards injects some welcome, craggy warmth into the closing barroom lament, "Losing My Touch." But it's also a performance that sests his legendary band has become little more to him than "The Greatest Day Job in the World."

This special edition of the definitive Rolling Stones hits collection is released to coincide with the start of the band's European tour. - amazon.com

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival (1970)

Recorded live at the Atlanta Internation Pop Festival, Atlanta, Georgia, July 3 & 4, 1970.

The 1970 Atlanta International Pop Festival was one of the first big rock festivals of the decade, beating out the Isle of Wight by over a month. It was also home turf for the Allman Brothers, who were invited to play the opening and closing sets of the three-day event. In retrospect, it's interesting to note how--despite their penchant for extended jams--the Allmans were somewhat at odds with the flower-child ethic of the day; after the MC delivers a classic hippie/stoner intro, the tough, raw opening strains of "Statesboro Blues" come off as delightfully incongruous. Nevertheless, the band's improvisational blues-rock majesty made them a crowd-pleaser. It's easy to see why; the level of energy (and musicianship) here equals, if not surpasses their legendary live Fillmore East recordings from the following year, which showcase much of the same material.

Dickey Betts and Duane Allman's guitars play ably against Greg Allman's thick organ voicings and the percolating polyrhythms of drummers Butch Trucks and J. Johnny Johnson. Between-song announcements of a rain delay and the opening of the gates to non-paying fans reinforce the Woodstock-era vibe, making this two-disc set effective as both a musical and historical document. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - We're All Normal And We Want Our Freedom: A Tribute To Arthur Lee And Love (1994)

Named after a key line in Arthur Lee's "The Red Telephone" (itself a steal from the then-fashionable play Marat/Sade, also parodied by the Bonzo Dog Band in their freakout classic "We Are Normal"), the extremely uneven Love tribute We're All Normal and We Want Our Freedom at least sidesteps the common tribute band malady of songs that sound like the original versions, only not quite as good. Nearly all 21 bands on the compilation interpret Lee's songs in their own styles, a good thing since a band probably couldn't sound like Love's unique blend of hard rock and easy listening if they tried. The question is, can Lee's songs make the transition comfortably, or more to the point, whether these are bands who should be attempting Lee's songs in the first place. Unfortunately, the answer in about a third of these tracks is, "no, they shouldn't," with Love Battery's "No Matter What You Do" and Gobblehoof's plain, wretched "Alone Again Or" the most obvious culprits. However, the tracks by Teenage Fanclub, the Television Personalities, Eggs, and especially David Kilgour and Martin Phillips' sublime reading of "A Message to Pretty" are all excellent. They're not a patch on the originals, of course, but they show what can happen when a good band and an interesting cover come together. ~ All Music Guide

THE PARRISH & GURVITZ BAND - The Parrish & Gurvitz Band (2006)

After disbanding "Gun", Paul Gurvitz reunited with former "Londoners / Knack" bandmate Brian Parrish, initially recording with Lou Reizner. The pair were soon signed to George Martin's Regal Zonophone label and their sole LP was released in late '71, fully infused with the US west-coast sound. A second long-player was produced by Martin but never released, featuring the additional talents of Mike Kellie (ex-"Spooky Tooth"), Micky Gallagher (pre-IAN DURY) and Rick Wills (pre-"Foreigner"), who would collectively go on to become Peter Frampton's Camel. This double-disc set compiles the '71 LP and ten tracks from the unreleased follow-up, with liner notes and unreleased pictures.

JOHN MAYALL - Howlin' At The Moon (2011)

Like most British blues fanatics in the early '60s, John Mayall took his cues primarily from the stars of Chicago's electric blues scene. Both with the Bluesbreakers and later on his own, Mayall played a large role in introducing white audiences to electric blues. He was a leader in the emerging blues-rock movement, and his bands were an early proving ground for a number of future stars: Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce of Cream, Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones, and Peter Green, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac. This compilation of live tracks was recorded in the USA and Italy in the early 1980's, and features performances by John McVie (Fleetwood Mac) and Mick Taylor (The Rolling Stones) from the reformed Bluesbreakers tour of 1982. Over 70 minutes of the finest blues including a storming workout of ""The Stumble.

JIMMY THACKERY & THE DRIVERS - Feel The Heat (2011)

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1953, Jimmy was raised in Washington, D.C. In high school he played in a band with Bonnie Raitt's brother David, who turned him on to Buddy Guy. A pivotal moment for the 17 year old Thackery was seeing Buddy perform at a small D.C. church, but the "moment that changed my life," as Thackery recalls it, occurred quite by accident one night when he wandered into a Jimi Hendrix show in D.C. and heard Hendrix let loose in his first gig after getting kicked off the Monkees tour. Thackery became widely known as the innovative guitarist with the Nighthawks, one of the hardest-working and most popular blues bands of the '70's and '80's. Starting in 1974, the group recorded over twenty albums and constantly toured the U.S., Europe, Canada and Japan. Jimmy was the heart, soul, and adrenaline of the Nighthawks sound during his fourteen year tenure with the Washington, D.C.-based band, creating a distinctively raw, powerful guitar style and establishing a reputation as a spectacular soloist. - amazon.com

MARIANNE SEGAL feat. CIRCULUS - The Gathering (2007)

Back in the early 1970's, at the tender of 21 Marianne Segal wrote a set of songs that formed the album Fly On Strangewings, she recorded it as the group Jade with Dave Waite and Rod Edwards. That was in 1970, in 1971 they split leaving that one album to go on to become one of the definitive folk rock albums of that era. Well, now she's back with an album that completes the journey to 2008. You may well have noticed her tie up with Circulus on their first album A Lick On The Tip Of An Envelope Yet To Be Sent; Michael Tyack persuaded her to record a song she wrote at the time of Jade called Swallow. The energy of their cumulative talents crackles through the whole song, for them not to have recorded more together would have been a crime.

Finally the follow-up to Marianne Segal's 1970 Jade classic, Fly On Strangewings. This new offering leans towards the pastoral baroque side of folk rock. However, any notion of a land too twee are soon interrupted by the psych/blues lead guitar of Bill Steer (Firebird). Co-produced by Michael Tyack of Circulus, it's no surprise to find ample helpings of Moog synthesizer and Tudor crumhorn. If you need a change from your endless rotation of Fairport Convention and Jefferson Airplane CDs then try this.

WANDA JACKSON - The Party Ain't Over (2011)

Wanda Jackson is an American singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarist who had success in the mid-1950s and 60s as one of the first popular female rockabilly singers and a pioneering rock and roll artist. She is known to many as the Queen (or First Lady) of Rockabilly.

This collection of vintage and contemporary covers was produced by fan and new-found friend Jack White at his Nashville studio and recorded with a late-night honky-tonk feel by members of My Morning Jacket, the Raconteurs, and Dead Weather, among others. The White-curated lineup of tunes, says Jackson, showcases "all the various types of music that I've done through the years-some country, some gospel, some rockabilly, some rock n' roll. It's got all of that, and we threw in a Bob Dylan song 'Thunder On the Mountain,' just to be safe." The spirited Jackson, revered for such classic singles as "Let's Have a Party" and "Fujiyama Mama," proves that brash rock and roll attitude need not have an age limit. Her trademark growl remains intact on rockers like "Rip It Up" and "Nervous Breakdown"; she opens the set with an echo-laden sneer on a rollicking version of "Shakin' All Over" and ends it 10 songs later with a plaintive take on Jimmie Rodgers' "Yodel #6." Along the way she tackles the Andrew Sisters kitschy "Rum and Coca Cola" and a big-band rendition of the DeCastro Sisters' "Teach Me Tonight," and she out-sasses-and out-classes-Amy Winehouse on a cover of the British bad girl's "You Know I'm No Good," which has already been released as a single. - amazon.com

V.A. - Rolling Stone Collection: 25 Years of Essential Rock (1993)

Not everyone who was a rock music fan during at least part of the 25 years covered by the seven CDs in this collection will agree on what was the most "essential rock" of this era. Since this collection is associated with Rolling Stone magazine, you would be correct if you assumed that some of the magazine's favorite artists would be included here: Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Prince, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Byrds, and Talking Heads. But also here are cuts by Led Zeppelin, a group the magazine generally did not consider to be anything special. The collection includes one #1 hit single, "I Want to Know What Love Is" by Foreigner; many non-hits, such as "The Crystal Ship", the B-side of the Doors #1 smash, "Light My Fire" (which is not included in this collection); some well-regarded efforts that were only available as album tracks; and some selections that are unknown singles by unknown artists to most rock fans, such as "See No Evil" by Television. For most potential buyers it will include some selections they already have on a CD and others they've never heard before. It may even introduce them to some artists they will grow to love. By the way, the sound quality of this collection is uniformly excellent. - amazon.com
