MARCIA BALL - Roadside Attractions (2011)

On her new CD, Roadside Attractions (her 15th solo recording), Marcia Ball's songwriting is at the forefront, ranging from tales of wild parties to stories of twisted motel affairs to declarations of the enduring power of love and family. It is inspired by her years on the road and from insights gained from everyday life, making it her most autobiographical album. Roadside Attractions is certainly more than capable of starting a no-holds-barred bash. But more than that, it's a tour-de-force of Marcia's seemingly endless talent, and among the most emotionally moving recordings she has ever made. Produced by famed songwriter, musician and producer Gary Nicholson (Delbert McClinton, Wynonna Judd, T. Graham Brown), Roadside Attractions finds Marcia Ball at a creative peak. Ball wrote or co-wrote every song--something she had never done over the course of her forty-year career. Throughout the proceedings, her stellar musicians add power and nuance to the music, perfectly complementing Ball's expert piano playing, slice-of-life lyrics and melodic, storytelling vocals. - amazon.com

ROBBIE ROBERTSON - How To Become Clairvoyant [Deluxe Edition] (2011)

If ever there was an album that was well worth a long wait, Robbie Robertson's fifth solo album is the one. Coming 13 years after his last album, Contact from the Underworld of Redboy, this new collection is called How to Become Clairvoyant — and it's a clear reminder of Robertson's musical prowess, which has been missing from our ears since 1998. How to Become Clairvoyant is a collaboration with Eric Clapton. From the earliest stages of the creation of this music, Robbie and Eric worked closely, but without having much of a plan in place for where they were headed. As the years passed, those early ideas slowly grew into How To Become Clairvoyant. Robertson's commitment to create the soundtrack for the Martin Scorsese's movie Shutter Island slowed the proceedings down a little more, but that didn't take anything away from what this new album would become. In fact, the break from recording sessions may have helped Robbie out by allowing him to step away from his new songs and later return to them with a fresh outlook. In these final sessions, Robertson enhanced things with the assistance of a few friends. Guitarists Robert Randolph and Tom Morello (of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave) were brought in, along with Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, vocalist Angela McClusky (formerly of Wild Colonials), Taylor Goldsmith (from the band Dawes), Rocco Deluca and others. These talented guests add a sonic dimension to the basic tracks created by Robertson, Clapton, Steve Winwood, bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Ian Thomas.

MEAT LOAF - The Very Best Of Meat Loaf (1998)

"The Very Best of Meat Loaf" is a 1998 album spanning the first 21 years of Meat Loaf's recording career. Although not reaching the top ten in the UK, it recently went platinum, and was already platinum around the rest of the world just after its release. The album features many of Meat Loaf's best-known songs as well as a few from his lesser known albums of the 1980s. Besides hits like "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" and "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", The Very Best of Meat Loaf contains three new tracks. Two of those are written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman and are adapted from their musical Whistle Down The Wind; both of these tracks were produced by Steinman. The third new track, "Is Nothing Sacred" is written by Steinman and lyricist Don Black, and produced by Russ Titelman (the single version of this song is a duet with Patti Russo, whereas the album version is a solo song by Meat Loaf. The single version would later appear on the VH1 Storytellers CD). The album was rereleased in 2003 with the same tracks in a different order. - wikipedia

TEN YEARS AFTER - Live At The Fillmore East (1970)

With its devotion to '50s rock and blues coupled to a manic, if decidedly middlebrow performance tack, Ten Years After could seem positively Jurassic, even by late-'60s standards. This collection culls magnificently recorded performances (kudos to Hendrix/ELP engineer Eddie Kramer) from a February 1970 weekend stand at the Fillmore East, capturing the band at its post-Woodstock performing peak. The running times of most of the tracks (three-quarters of which clock in at seven-plus minutes) will tip listeners to the show's jam-heavy take on covers of Sonny Boy Williamson (an ominous, revamped "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl"), Willie Dixon (a slow, 16-minute burn through "Help Me"), and Chuck Berry (atypically economic romps of "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Roll Over Beethoven"). But with the band's own primordial originals (the titles "Skooby-Oobly-Doobob" and "Extension on One Chord" speak for themselves) there's an elemental, effusive--and, dare we say it--Ramones-like stoopidity to the tracks. Even Alvin Lee's trademark fret-burner "I'm Going Home" is hard to resist. This set perfectly captures one of the era's hardest working bands in a concise, double-disc time capsule. - amazon.com

DISC 1:
01. Love Like A Man 02. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl 03. Working On The Road 04. The Hobbit 05. 50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain 06. A) Skoobly Oobly Doobob B) I Cant Keep From Crying Spmetimes C) Extension On The Chord

DISC 2: 01. Help Me 02. Im Going Home 03. Sweet Little 16 04. Roll Over Beethoven 05. I Woke Up This Morning 06. Spoonful

TEN YEARS AFTER - Recorded Live (1973)

Originally released as a double LP set, "Recorded Live" was a response to the proliferation of bootlegs of the band's concerts. It was to be as faithful a representation of the band's onstage firepower as possible. In this regard, it succeeds; it's better recorded than their breakthrough "Undead", and the performances are generally stronger. The highpoint is the jazzy, nearly 16-minute assault on "I Can't Keep From Crying." (Historical note: On the Blues Project's "Reunion In Central Park" album, also released in 1973, Al Kooper, who wrote the song, tells the audience that Ten Years After's version paid for his new car that year). There are also enthusiastic run-throughs of the band's best known numbers, including their salacious take on "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" and (of course) their Woodstock showstopper "I'm Going Home."

YNGWIE J. MALMSTEEN - Trilogy (1986)

Yngwie Johann Malmsteen is a Swedish virtuoso guitarist, composer, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader. Malmsteen became known for his neo-classical playing approach in heavy metal music which became a new musical style in the early 1980s. He is considered by many to be one of the most technically gifted rock guitarists of all time and is considered to be a pioneer of shred guitar. Yngwie Malmsteen's second best album after Rising Force, Trilogy finds him delving wholeheartedly into fantastic, medieval themes and lyrical imagery. Yngwie's compositional skills are at their peak, and of all his albums, the lyrics here contribute the most to the overall feel of the music. The guitar solos, as always, are jaw-droppingly fast and technically demanding, but Malmsteen is still capable of playing them with force and fire behind them. Highlights include "Dark Ages," "You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget," and the epic "Trilogy Suite Op:5."

JUDY COLLINS - Sings Cohen, Lennon & McCartney...

2004 - Sings Leonard Cohen: Democracy
As much a charming tribute to a dear friend as it is a best-of compilation, "Sings Leonard Cohen - Democracy" was released to coincide with Cohen's 70th birthday in September 2004. Collins was among the first performers to discover the Canadian singer/songwriter's 's unique gifts, covering "Suzanne" and "Dress Rehearsal Rag" on her 1966 chamber-folk masterpiece, IN MY LIFE. Those songs, along with eight other previously released Collins renditions of Cohen songs, plus a 1999 live version of "Song for Bernadette" and three brand new recordings ("Democracy," "A Thousand Kisses Deep," and "Night Comes On") are collected here. Combined with extensive liner-note reminiscences from Collins about the songs and their author, the album is something of a musical valentine, an idea that's a bit ironic considering Cohen's relentlessly sardonic worldview. One of Collins's strengths as an interpreter of Cohen's songs is that unlike some, she never loses sight of the essential warmth and dry humor in even Cohen's most sour songs. As a result, "Sings Leonard Cohen - Democracy" might be the Leonard Cohen album for people who think they don't like Leonard Cohen. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. Democracy 02. Suzanne 03. A Thousand Kisses Deep 04. Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye 05. Dress Rehearsal Rag 06. Priests 07. Night Comes On 08. Sisters Of Mercy 09. Story Of Isaac 10. Bird On The Wire 11. Famous Blue Raincoat 12. Joan Of Arc 13. Take This Longing 14. Song Of Bernadette (live)

2007 - Sings Lennon & McCartney
That the mainstream folk goddess has become quite a formidable torch singer in her golden years should surprise no one. Ms. Collins has always shone brightest as an interpreter of other's songs, from traditional folk tunes to such notable covers as her takes on Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" and Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns." Not far from 70 years of age at the time of this album's release, Ms. Collins lends a gentle irony to her reading of "When I'm 64." But her voice is clear; it's as youthful and plaintive as it's been in years. And on tracks like "Norwegian Wood" and "Blackbird," it's flat-out gorgeous. Ably backed by studio musicians Larry Campbell, Tony Levon, and Zev Katz, these jazzy renditions of your favorite Beatle numbers - though where's "Revolution"? - are simply a delight. Buy it for your mom, but treat yourself to a listen first. - amazon.com

BONNIE TYLER - All The Best (1996)

Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins) is a British pop singer born in 195*. In the beginning, Gaynor Hopkins sang in pubs and clubs all over south Wales with her bands; first Bobby Wayne and the Dixies and then Imagination. By 1975 she had settled on the stage name Bonnie Tyler and had recorded her first single for RCA Records, "My Honeycomb". Though it failed to chart, her second release, "Lost in France" reached the British Top Ten and charted well in Europe. Prior to the release of her first album, The World Starts Tonight (1977), she underwent surgery to remove nodules on her vocal cords. Fears that her singing career would be over proved unfounded as the resultant husky quality in her voice became her trademark. Her next album, Natural Force (1978), led to the release of "It's a Heartache", which showcased the power of her gravelly voice and reached the charts in several countries. As a result of the success of the single she undertook her first American tour. She continued to release moderately successful albums but it was in 1982 that her career took off, with the release of Faster Than the Speed of Night. The album contained the operatic rock masterpiece single "Total Eclipse of the Heart", written by Jim Steinman, and earned her a Grammy nomination - making her nominations that year total three. She followed this success with "Holding Out for a Hero", which was her contribution to the Footloose soundtrack and appeared on her next album, Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire. For her next big success she had to wait until she released Bitterblue in 1991. The album was a huge success across Europe, achieving quadruple platinum sales in Norway. Angel Heart (1992) continued this run of success. Her most recent album was 2007's compilation album, From The Heart: Bonnie Tyler's Greatest Hits, but it is reported that she is working on a follow-up with Jim Steinman; the friend who provided her with such success several years ago.

ROD STEWART - The Story So Far: The Very Best Of (2001)

The Story So Far: The Very Best of Rod Stewart is a 2001 Rod Stewart career-retrospective compilation album, which summarizes his solo work beginning with material from his 1971 breakthrough album Every Picture Tells a Story until his 2000 album Human. For contractual reasons, only two songs from his Mercury Records tenure ("Maggie May" and "You Wear It Well") were included. The rest of the material is from different albums released under Warner Bros. Records. The compilation was particularly notable for dividing the songs between rock and pop tunes on the first disc (A Night Out) and love songs on the second disc (A Night In). Also, even though most of the songs included on the album enjoyed big success (29 out of the 34 songs originally reached the Top 10 in the United Kingdom and/or the United States), many hit singles were missed-out, including US Top 10 hits as "Passion", "Infatuation", "Handbags and Gladrags" and "My Heart Can't Tell You No". A particular inclusion on the album was the track "In a Broken Dream", recorded by Stewart as a guest with Python Lee Jackson back in 1969. The track wasn't a hit until 1972, when Stewart was already a superstar, and then the single reached #3 in the UK. The song remained unreleased on a Rod Stewart until its inclusion on this set. In the US the album was released separately as The Voice: The Very Best of Rod Stewart and Encore: The Very Best of Rod Stewart Vol. 2, though there are some differences in the content.

CHRIS NORMAN - Love Songs (2000)

Chris Norman is an English soft rock singer. Norman was the lead singer of Smokie, an English glam rock band from Bradford, which found success in Europe in the 1970s. Approaching his twelfth birthday, Norman started at St. Bede’s Grammar School where he was to meet Alan Silson and Terry Uttley, future members of Smokie. As teenagers, influenced by the new era of groups such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and then folk singer, Bob Dylan, Norman and Silson began meeting up and spent nearly all their spare time learning new songs on their guitars. They managed to persuade Uttley to join them and, along with a drummer friend called Ron Kelly, they formed their first band. The Yen, Essence, and Long Side Down were just some of a variety of names they called themselves before settling on "The Elizabethans". In 1968 "The Elizabethans" had turned professional following a stint at Butlins holiday camp in Skegness. Another name change was inevitable, but during the next seven years Norman and the band gained much experience playing around the country. They performed some live radio broadcasts, including Radio 1 Roadshows. They gained a recording contract with RCA, and then Decca Records, and released three singles under their new name of "Kindness". During this period the band played many different styles and venues, and had a period as the backing group to Peter Noone, after he had just left Herman's Hermits. LORI McKENNA - Lorraine (2011)

Lori McKenna is now about the same age as her mother Lorraine was when she died. Though McKenna was only seven at the time, those fleeting memories and the introspection that they inevitably bring figure heavily in her fine new album named for the mother she lost long ago. A New England songwriter who only began performing in local folk clubs when she was 27 (married with three kids and living the suburban life where the word "play date" had nothing to do with a club gig), her songs still found their way to Nashville's elite: Alison Krauss, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban and, in particular, Faith Hill and hubby Tim McGraw.

But the big label allure, while bringing her to an even wider audience, wasn't without a downside. Independent once again, McKenna reflects that the brighter spotlight was "not exactly the safest way to guard your creative instincts" though she says the experience gave her a "much deeper confidence in myself as an artist." With Lorraine, due January 25 via Signature Sounds, she's back in the New England acoustic circuit, still writing brilliant songs of soul-searching and loss, relationships and the people in her life, neighborhoods and small town values. Songs such as "Buy This Town", a haunting folk hymn of the modern working class ethic, and quietly epic album opener "The Luxury of Knowing" are among McKenna's best songs, disarming, sweeping melodies that elevate a naturally lovely voice and stark acoustic guitar into a sublime realm of drama and intimacy. - directcurrentmusic.com

PAVLOV'S DOG - Live And Unleashed (2011)

"Live and Unleashed" is the first Pavlov's Dog livealbum in it's 36 year history. The band is touring again regulary since 2004, and receives terrific reviews for energetic, emotional, and congenial concerts. "Live and Unleashed"captures the unique spirit of a Pavlov's Dog show authentically. The 7 piece live-lineup, incl. violin, melotron, piano, guitar and David Surkamp's unique voice, generates the typical Pavlov's Dog sound. Some arrangements are quite different to the studio versions, and overall the band is live more heavy. Powerful rock songs such as Breaking Ice or Looking For My Shadow, take turns with ballads such as Standing Here With You or Angel's Twilight Jump. Branded by beautiful violin melodies and Surkamp's affecting vocals, Pavlov's Dog live gives the heebie-jeebies for granted. Live and unleashed comprehends a cross-section of all Pavlov's Dog and David Surkamp periods. The album contains not only tracks of any Pavlov's Dog album, but as well Heart Of Mine (a track originally by HIFI, Surkamp's band in the 80ies together with Ian Matthews), and with Wrong and Looking For My Shadow two tracks of Surkamp's 2006 soloalbum Dancing On The Edge Of A Teacup. And despite Live and unleashed was recorded in 2009, it comprehends already four tracks of the brand new studioalbum Echo & Boo, which was released in 2010. - germusica.com

McKENNA MENDELSON MAINLINE - The Mainline Bump 'N' Grind Revue: Live At The Victory Theatre (1972)

McKenna Mendelson Mainline is a seminal Canadian blues band, working the same English club circuit as the then up and coming bands Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin. In the spring of 1969, the band was signed to Liberty Records (United Artists). Much of McKenna Mendelson Mainline uniqueness stemmed from the originality of their approach to the blues genre. In December 1968, MMM reversed the trend of English bands coming to North America, and proceeded to England to gig and hopefully to pursue a major record deal. The Mainline reunion of the late 1990s gave rise to their best known "recent" gig at Toronto's El Mocambo Tavern, which closed its doors for the last time in November 2001.

The band's live shows became more risque and raunchier, defying the staid Canadian R&B clubs up and down the Toronto bar circuit. The result of Mainline's new found infamy was released as the "The Mainline Bump 'n' Grind Revue: Live At The Victory Theatre" in 1972. - wikipedia

EARL, PERKINS, JONES, SMITH - Eye To Eye (1996)

The real strength of this album is that all the musicians involved in this project are the "cream of the cream" and the result, as easily predictable, is simply unmatchable. Willie "Pinetop" Perkins, Calvin "Fuzz" Jones, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith can give lectures about how to play the blues to everyone in the business, Bruce Katz himself is nowadays one of the most talented B3 players and Ronnie Earl is probably the best white blues guitarist around. The album is a mix of originals and old tunes written by Perkins or Smith and covers of masters such as Memphis Slim, Roosevelt Sykes, Tampa Red and Sonny Boy Williamson. Despite the fact that the entire album sounds very much like a respectful and sincere homage to the greatest blues men of the past, the unmistakable stile of Ronnie Earl elevates this collection to a different level. The impression you get is to listen to something incredibly fresh and "new". He plays acoustic, slide and of course electric guitars always with the usual intensity and feeling that have made him unique in the blues guitarists scenario. All the others stellar musicians involved in the project play at their best and the final result is awesome, moreover the Audioquest production and recording are as usual simply perfect. - amazon.com

BLACK OAK ARKANSAS - Black Oak Arkansas (1971)

Produced by Iron Butterfly's Lee Dorman and Mike Pinera, Black Oak Arkansas introduced a three-guitar thunderstorm underpinning the scary basso profundo growls of lead singer Jim "Dandy" Mangrum. This was a sound unlike any other on the then-nascent Southern rock scene. With songs like "Hot and Nasty," "Lord Have Mercy on My Soul," and an otherworldly cover of Guy Mitchell's hit "Singing the Blues," Black Oak found a cult following through incessant touring with the likes of the Allman Brothers Band. This is not pretty music, but it does have a propulsive kick to it, with the guitars going in several directions at once while Jim Dandy's Howlin' Wolf-influenced vocals lay out a strange blend of macho sexual and religious imagery. Although the sound would quickly become cartoonish over subsequent releases, this initial release contained the spark of the new and different.

MATTHEW'S SOUTHERN COMFORT - The Essential Collection (1997)

Matthews Southern Comfort plays music of the sort that is indispensable for those who own houses in the country with a fireplace and are the recipients of the affections of ladies who cook them organic dinners and wear their wild blonde manes in pigtails much of the time. If this kind of mellow tuneful close-harmony country-tinged polite rock appeals to you as much as it does to me, this band is very much up your alley. Its heights aren't quite so giddy at the same time that its depths are deeper, but Later That Same Year, Matthews Southern Comfort's third album, nevertheless succeeds at the difficult task of worthily succeeding Second Spring, which to my mind was 1970's premier undiscovered marvel. As did Spring, Later contains: a couple of light-hearted and sprightly just-for-fun rollicks, Goffin/King's "To Love" and someone named Alan Alderson's "Mare Take Me Home"; a couple of pleasant treatments of currently fashionable composers' works, Jesse Winchester's "Brand New Tennessee Waltz" and Neil Young's "Tell Me Why"; and a generous earful of enchanting low-key laments featuring Ian Matthews' own delicate, own delicate, almost angelic tenor, all of it played most sympathetically and deliciously sung, frequently in three- or four-part harmony. As guitarist Carl Barnwell's "Sylvie" (an exceedingly clammy affair whose Andrews Sisterish refrain in particular is gorgeous enough to gag on) is indisputably the albums' nadir, so are his other two contributions, "Jonah" and "For Melanie" (whose lack of musical cohesion is more than made up for by its intriguing lyrics), its twin peaks, with Matthews' own exquisitely-textured "And Me" standing only slightly less lofty. Listen to either Second Spring or this album and you'll join me in fervently hoping that Matthews' recent surprising departure from Southern Comfort (which, double-surprisingly, occurred while they were being most heatedly romanced by a variety of record companies) will result in twice, and not half, as much such delightful music as theirs being made available for us later this same year and thereafter. - Rolling Stone, 4/15/71.

ALISON KRAUSS & UNION STATION - Paper Airplane (2011)

A truly breathtaking collection of 11 exquisite songs, Paper Airplane is Alison Krauss' 14th album and the band's follow-up to 2004's triple Grammy winning Lonely Runs Both Ways (Rounder). It is Krauss' first release since her 2007 internationally acclaimed, multi-platinum collaboration with Robert Plant, Raising Sand, which won six Grammys including "Record Of The Year" and "Album Of The Year." Alison Krauss and Union Station features the talents of Krauss (fiddle and lead vocals), Dan Tyminski (guitar, mandolin and lead vocals), Barry Bales (bass and harmony vocals), Ron Block (banjo, guitar and harmony vocals), and Jerry Douglas (Dobro and harmony vocals). Paper Airplane was produced by the band and recorded in Nashville with engineer Mike Shipley (Maroon 5, The Cars, Def Leppard, Joni Mitchell). As bluegrass virtuosos the members of Union Station are beyond compare, and the music they create together transcends all genres. Their work on films such as Cold Mountain and O Brother, Where Art Thou? has contributed immeasurably to a renaissance of American roots music. Part of Alison Krauss' incontestable talent is how effortlessly she bridges the gap between roots music and country, rock and pop. A highly sought-after collaborator, Krauss has worked with some of the biggest names in popular music, including James Taylor, Phish, Dolly Parton, Yo Yo Ma & Bonnie Raitt. Since signing with Rounder Records at the age of 14 in 1985 Krauss has sold in excess of 12 million albums and garnered 26 Grammy® Awards, the most for any female and the third most of any recording artist in Grammy® history. - amazon.com

The title track is a cover of Robert Nighthawk's 1949 "Black Angel Blues (Sweet Black Angel)" (based on Lucille Bogan's "Black Angel Blues" from 1930 (covered by Tampa Red in 1934 with the same title and recut by Tampa Red in 1950 as "Sweet Little Angel." B. B. King later covered "Sweet Black Angel" as "Sweet Little Angel" in 1956. The last track features Perkins playing a boogie on acoustic guitar and remarking on the apparent clumsiness of his finger work. - wikipedia

LEDFOOT - Damned (2010)

First signed to a major label at the age of 19, he has worked with some of the music industries greatest and has seen many changes. Ledfoot classifies himself as Gothic Blues, and his masterful songwriting and haunting voice portray the idea of this new genre to perfection. His guitar of choice is an acoustic guitar, which in today’s world of electric guitar riffs and ease of use is unusual. The way he plays is amazing with sounds deep and dark. Conjuring images of pain, desperation and the destruction of how he perceives the world to be. Playing in B Minor and using steel picks he has been destroying so many strings that can’t keep up with the punishment that he forces upon the beautifully classic instrument, so he is getting one custom made. In 1989 he started the ledgendary The Havalinas with Smutty Smiff (Rockats, 13kats) og Chalo Quitana (Cruzados, Bob Dylan, Social Distortion). Bruce Springsteen has recorded Tim Scott's song ”High Hopes” on Bloodbrothers EP og DVD. his new concept is called Ledfoot. Ledfoot because there is nothing more here than Tim on 12 string guitar and stomp and some great songs! The album The Devils Songbook was released Autumn 2008.

The album "Damned" is special in several ways, Ledfoot has released a double album. One CD called "Damned if I do" is recorded with only Ledfoot and his 12 string Taylor guitar and stomp. The other CD "Damned if I dont" are the same songs recorded with legendary guitarplayer Ronni Le Tekro and Ledfoot together with some band mates. The album has got raving reviews in Norway. Sivert Hoyem from Madrugada is singing on Wicked State Of Mind on disc 2.

GINA SICILIA - Can't Control Myself (2011) thumbup

Young Philadelphia songstress Gina Sicilia exploded onto the scene in 2007, as her debut CD, Allow Me to Confess, was met with joyous acclaim by fans and critics alike. She was heralded as a distinctive new voice in the Blues, as well as an insightful songwriter and interpreter of neglected classics in the Rhythm & Blues canon. In 2008 she was nominated for “Best New Artist Debut” at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee, just as her sophomore release Hey Sugar proved her also to be a legitimate contender in the worlds of Classic Country and Americana. With her new 2011 release, Can’t Control Myself, Gina broadens her stylistic palette, infusing even more Soul and Americana into her bedrock influences of Blues and R&B. This CD features seven new Gina Sicilia compositions, as well as three choice covers borrowed from Bobby Bland, Stevie Wonder, and Ike & Tina Turner. Gina’s singing and songwriting continue to break new ground, showing remarkable depth, power, and seemingly unstoppable growth. Can’t Control Myself was produced and engineered by Gina’s label mate, the insanely talented Dave Gross, who also played every instrumental track on the record except for trumpet, sax, and one lap-steel track. - vizztone.com

HAMILTON POOL - Return To Zero (1995)

Based upon their past credits, one anticipates a segmented division of labor from the three principals in Hamilton Pool. The Voice would be Fairport Convention founder Iain Mathews. The Technician would be multi-instrumentalist Mark Hellman, who's produced albums for Mathews, Carole King, and Sara Hickman, among others. And the Writer would be Michael Francasso, whose When I Lived in the Wild established his name among upstart Americana singer-songwriters. But any notions that Return to Zero is an assembly line collaboration are quickly dashed; these guys built this chassis using the Japanese team method. Lead vocal duties are shared just about equally, and while Francasso brings fewer songs to the mix than his two, he assumes frontman duties on two noteworthy covers - the Rolling Stones' "Back Street Girl" and Bob Neuwrith's majestically bleak "Eye on the Road." - amazon.com

THE MOTHER HIPS - Pacific Dust (2009)

The Mother Hips have flown under the radar as true indie music pioneers for almost two decades. With the release of their new album Pacific Dust (available October 27th on Camera Records), California's unsung psych-pop heroes tell their story. Hailed by critics for their "rootsy mix of 70s rock and power pop" (pitchfork.com) and for their unflinching ability to "sing it sweet and play it dirty" (New Yorker), on Pacific Dust The Hips' signature sound rings more genuine and relevant than ever before. The Hips - led by co-founders Tim Bluhm (vocals/guitar) and Greg Loiacono (guitar/vocals) - have been playing music for nearly 18 years, and in the process, have had the luxury of exploring and refining their craft. For the band's seventh full-length studio album, The Mother Hips have never been more primed to share their well-traveled tales - the long days and nights on the road, the gritty politics, the smart inward reflections and man, the music! - all delivered with a most appealing balance of Americana storytelling and their California-burnished rock. - motherhips.com

MELISSA ETHERIDGE - The first three studio albums...

Melissa Etheridge is an American rock singer-songwriter and musician. She has received fifteen Grammy Award nominations winning two, one Academy Award and has sold twenty-seven million albums worldwide and almost fourteen million in the United States alone.

1988 - "Melissa Etheridge"
Exploding onto the late 1980s rock scene with this energetic, sensual, and shamelessly personal debut, Melissa Etheridge instantly proved herself a skilled singer-songwriter and thunderstorm of a performer. This radio-friendly rock collection lays out the Etheridge fundamentals. "Bring Me Some Water," the driven, bluesy plea of an abandoned lover, is easily the strongest cut here. Its infectious rhythmic backdrop perfectly supports Etheridge's rowdy, passionate vocals to make this sexually charged lament unforgettable. This album also launched the radio favorite "Similar Features" and "Like the Way I Do," another uptempo, jealousy-laden rocker. Actually, the album is almost overripe with scathing indictments of former lovers, but it also makes it clear that Etheridge is a growing musician. These early efforts are so power-packed that it's easy to overlook redundancy and focus on all that raw emotion. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. Similar Features 02. Chrome Plated Heart 03. Like The Way I Do 04. Precious Pain 05. Don't You Need 06. The Late September Dogs 07. Occasionally 08. Watching You 09. Bring Me Some Water 10. I Want You

1989 - "Brave And Crazy"
Not a trace of the dreaded sophomore curse was to be found on Melissa Etheridge's second album. On Brave and Crazy, the throaty singer/guitarist/composer is slightly more reflective than on her first release, but no less confident. Nor is she is any less rootsy. Etheridge's earthiness is a large part of her appeal, and she uses it most advantageously on the gutsy rockers "Skin Deep" and "Let Me Go," as well as more reflective pieces such as "Testify," "You Used to Love to Dance" and "You Can Sleep While I Drive" (which, like a lot of Bruce Springsteen's songs, equates long drives with freedom and liberation). As introspective as things get on this CD, Etheridge never becomes wimpy or self-pitying. For all its vulnerability, Brave and Crazy is the work of someone who comes across as a survivor. - cduniverse.com
TRACKS:
01. No Souvenirs 02. Brave And Crazy 03. You Used To Love To Dance 04. The Angels 05. You Can Sleep While I Drive 06. Testify 07. Let Me Go 08. By Back Door 09. Skin Deep 10. Royal Station 4/16

1992 - "Never Enough"
An album that never spawned hits on the magnitude of "Bring Me Some Water" or "I'm the Only One" from her debut, Melissa Etheridge's sorely overlooked third effort is a gold mine of poetic contemplation, sensual declarations, and emotional pleas. Of her first five albums, Never Enough is the one that best shows her range. Stepping away from electric guitar-based rock and blues and toward such exploratory tunes as the piano-backed "The Letting Go," the beat- and sample-driven "2001," and the uncommonly poppy "Dance Without Sleeping," Etheridge proves she's not a one-riff musician. She seems to push through her stylistic fears a bit, yet stays comfortably within the boundaries that her raspy belt can reach. Never Enough offers a healthy dose of Etheridge's trademark soul-twisting rock in the form of "Ain't it Heavy" and the angry, possessive of "It's for You." But the addition of pattern-busting songs makes this album a particularly mature, rich, pleasurable listen. - amazon.com

FUZZY DUCK - Fuzzy Duck (1971)

Fuzzy Duck is the self-titled album by London-based progressive rock band Fuzzy Duck. When it was originally released, only 500 pressings were made, making the original vinyl LP extremely rare. The album reached legendary status by affiliation, as it features Mick Harnsworth of Five Day Week Straw People and Andromeda, and Roy Sharland, a keyboardist who later worked with the Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Spice. This album is classic keyboard-driven British progressive rock in the vein of Soft Machine and Caravan and is well-deserving of reissue. The Arkarma issue features four bonus tracks previously unreleased and excellent repackaging more that surpasses the originals for quality.

JULIE DRISCOLL, BRIAN AUGER & THE TRINITY - Open (1967) [2004 Castle Music]

The baker's dozen on this 1970 collection hail from both album and single sides recorded by Brian Auger & the Trinity during a brief stint with lead vocalist Julie Driscoll. Although the bulk of the selections were included on the long players Open (1967) and Streetnoise (1968), Julie Driscoll & Brian Auger (1970) offer up their cover of "This Wheel's on Fire" -- a Top Five hit in the U.K. slightly prior to the release of the Band's version from Music from Big Pink (1968). The Trinity consists of Auger (keyboards/vocals), Dave Ambrose (bass) and Clive Thacker (drums), along with Gary Boyle (guitar) who contributed to Open. While the dearth of original material might initially seem suspect, part of the synergy between Driscoll and Auger is their unquestionable assortment of contemporary titles. They transform "Light My Fire" into a moody reading that sizzles with an understated groove. Donovan's "Season of the Witch" profits immeasurably from Driscoll's sinuous and sultry intonations. She weaves around the jazzy arrangement with the finesse and presence of a summoned sonic spectre. Offsetting the ethereal vibe is the vociferous and commanding overhaul of "This Wheel's on Fire," which she would revisit in 1992 with noted English actor Adrian Edmondson as the theme song to the BBC-TV comedy Absolutely Fabulous. Auger's incendiary keyboard runs are practically Wagner-ian in their ferocity. Of the lesser-known reworkings, Laura Nyro's "Save the Country" and David Ackles' "Road to Cairo" are moulded into wholly new ideas and approaches. Richie Havens' "Indian Rope Man" churns into a funky free-for-all behind Auger's aggressive Hammond B-3 pounding. The horn-driven "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)" is also worthy of mention as it is undoubtedly inspired by Cannonball Adderley's equally motivated rendering. Julie Driscoll & Brian Auger was briefly available on CD in the mid-'80s on Polydor and remains a great way to gather these selections. - answers.com

DONNY HATHAWAY - Everything Is Everything (1970) [1995 Rhino Records Inc.]

Donny Edward Hathaway (1945 – 1979) was an American soul musician. Donny Hathaway's 1970 debut is a certified soul classic, and even a cursory first listen reveals the wealth of riches that lie therein. Though Hathaway had been a behind-the-scenes force in the music industry for some time (as a pianist and arranger), the release of "Everything Is Everything" announced the full range of his talent. Hathaway's skills as an arranger, an instrumentalist, and most impressively a vocalist, shine brightly on each and every track. The album has a unique feel in relation to other soul classics of the era; this is neither the raw soul of Stax/Volt, nor the commercially oriented pop-soul of Motown. Instead, Hathaway takes the music back to church, infusing tunes like Ray Charles's "I Believe to My Soul" with a sanctified conviction that nearly bowls the listener over. At the same time, the album's arrangements are full and ambitious, balancing a smooth, sophisticated uptown vibe with punchy horn charts and funky rhythms. The album's themes are topical (note the well-known jam "The Ghetto"), yet "Everything Is Everything" does not feel dated, and sounds as fresh and vibrant today as it did upon its original release. - cduniverse.com

COLD BLOOD - The Best Of Cold Blood (1995)

Cold Blood is a long-standing soul-rock-jazz band founded by Larry Field in 1968 and originally based in the San Francisco East Bay area. They have also gone by the name "Lydia Pense and Cold Blood" due to the popularity of their lead singer, Lydia Pense.

Aside from an almost-ran in "You Got Me Hummin'," Cold Blood never really had any hits to speak of, so assembling a best-of is less a matter of picking hit singles than of individual taste. As such, this is a decent compilation of this San Francisco workhorse. It's also the only release readily available on CD, probably because it's all most listeners will need. It includes all of their debut album, as well as some of their better later tracks like "Lo and Behold." Cold Blood stayed true to its female-belter and brass-band blues formula throughout its career, with the result that this retrospective coheres as an album in its own right. - answers.com

JACKSON BROWNE - Solo Acoustic Vol. 2 (2008)

Jackson Browne gave listeners the first volume of his solo acoustic live performances in 2005. It was steeped in the gems from his rich catalog, presented with spoken word introductions to many of his best-known songs with a smattering of newer ones. The commentary got tiring in the CD format, but the music was impeccable and illustrated just how valuable he's been to American music as a songwriter. This second volume, while it does the same thing, is - in a manner - a mirror image of the first. The songs here are primarily from his later years. What's really interesting is that it doesn't matter. Browne's later songs communicate so directly that, presented in this manner, with only an acoustic guitar or a piano as accompaniment, we can find ourselves wandering around in reverie, or re-glimpsing the traces of emotion and time's passage as signposts to the way we live now. While there are a few "classic" tracks - "Redneck Friend," "Something Fine," and "Somebody's Baby" (from the Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack) - most of the material here comes from records after Hold Out. There are three tunes from his last studio offering, the generally ignored and underrated Naked Ride Home, which stack up seamlessly with his '70s material. Those tunes, "The Night Inside Me," "Casino Nation," and "My Stunning Mystery Companion," grace the beginning, middle, and end of this offering. In other words, no matter where else Browne goes (and he goes all the way back to "Something Fine"), he returns to the present tense, where he now exists as a songwriter. The performances of these tracks, and those from albums such as Looking East, I'm Alive, World in Motion, and Lives in the Balance, offer listeners an opportunity to hear Browne at his most elemental. His songs began this way, with a lone instrumental backing, as a melody dictating itself to words or vice versa, and were hammered out or came in the flush of white-heat creativity, but they were shorn of any adornment - just as they are here. The spoken introductions to several numbers are overly long and may have been fine for a sitting audience, but don't necessarily translate well to CD. That's a small complaint, however, as these 12 songs are quietly powerful, full of a particular craft and enigmatic gifts - no matter when they were written or recorded. Browne has never lost it as a songwriter; this is the proof. If you went to the trouble to purchase the first volume, this is an essential counterpart. ~ All Music Guide

JOE BONAMASSA - Dust Bowl (2011) thumbup

DUST BOWL is Bonamassa’s 9th studio release on Provogue Records in Europe and his J&R Adventures label (which he created with long-time manager Roy Weisman) in the US. Recorded in sessions at Black Rock Studios in Santorini, Greece, Ben’s Studio in Nashville, TN, The Cave in Malibu, CA and The Village in Los Angeles, CA, "Dust Bowl" combines the gritty, blues-based tones of Bonamassa’s first albums with the fluid, genre-defying sounds he’s mastered in the years since, plus a dose of Nashville in duets with legends John Hiatt and Vince Gill. Shirley most recently produced Bonamassa’s 2010 release, Black Rock, which entered the UK album chart at #14 and 2010's self-titled debut album from Black Country Communion, the Bonamassa-helmed, British-American rock supergroup with Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath), Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner) and Derek Sherinian (Billy Idol, Dream Theatre).

"This is the best album we’ve ever done," adds Bonamassa. "I’m finding more inspiration in storytelling in my 30s, in writing songs that are about something more profound than ‘my baby left me.’ I like albums that are made with the right intentions and sound organic and a little rough around the edges, like a great band playing live in the room, and that’s what we accomplished with Dust Bowl."

TRACKS:
01. Slow Train 02. Dust Bowl 03. Tennessee Plates (feat. John Hiatt) 04. The Meaning Of The Blues 05. Black Lung Heartache 06. You Better Watch Yourself 07. The Last Matador Of Bayonne 08. Heartbreaker (feat. Glenn Hughes) 09. No Love On The Street 10. The Whale That Swallowed Jonah 11. Sweet Rowena (feat. Vince Gill) 12. Prisoner

PAT TRAVERS - Blues Tracks 1 & 2 (1992/98)

1992 - Blues Tracks
Legendary guitarist Pat Traver's Blues Tracks is a potent collection of classy tunes originally recorded by legends such as Willie Dixon, Ray Charles, and Johnny Winter. From super shuffles to slow blues, all are set apart from others by Traver's gutsy approach. Guesting on "Statesboro Blues" is the fret wizard Michael Lee Firkins, while Little John Chrisley adds a mean harmonica solo to "I Can't Quit You " and "Mystery Train". Blues Tracks - the first of a long string of muscular blues releases by Travers, who puts his flair and flavor to these great songs.
TRACKS:
01. Memory Pain 02. Calling Card Blues 03. I Can't Quit You 04. Statesboro Blues 05. I've Got News For You 06. I Ain't Superstitious 07. Built For Comfort 08. Mystery Train 09. Just Got Paid 10. Sitting On Top Of The World

1998 - Blues Tracks 2
If you liked the first Blues Tracks (1992), you'll love Blues Tracks 2. The material this time is all covers, but ramped up enough to make them true PT classics. The drummer this time is none other than Liberty DeVito (Billy Joel) and boy does it show. Liberty is one pounding drummer for sure. From Johnny Winter's "I Guess I'll Go Away" to the Allman Brothers "Whipping Post" to Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze", you can't go wrong. The original artists would be proud to be represented by Pat's gutsy, blazing, rewrites of their classics.
TRACKS:
01. I Guess I'll Go Away 02. Pack It Up 03. Outside Woman Blues 04. Your Cash Ain't Nothing But Trash 05. Whipping Post 06. Take It Back 07. Taxman 08. Purple Haze 09. Bring It On Home To Me 10. I Don't Know 11. Walkin' By Myself 12. One More Heartache

MICK ABRAHAMS

Mick Abraham's was one of the more unfortunate hard-luck stories in rock music. Best known for his work on Jethro Tull's debut album, "This Was", where he played blues licks that had critics comparing him favorably to Eric Clapton, he left the group, and since then has never managed to achieve lasting success as a recording artist, or the world-class fame of his former bandmates. Leading various incarnations of his best-known band, Blodwyn Pig, he has persevered over the last quarter century, and achieved some major cult recognition, especially in
England.

1971 - "Mick Abrahams": 01. Greyhound Bus 02. Awake 03. Wind Of Change 04. Why Do You Do Me This Way 05. Big Queen 06. Not To Rearrange 07. Seasons

1972 - "At Last": 01. When I Get Back 02. Absent Friends 03. Time Now To Decide 04. Whole Wide World 05. Up And Down (Part 1) 06. Up And Down (Part 2) 07. Maybe Because 08. The Good Old Days 09. You'll Never Get It From Me

03. Slave to the Rhythm
04. Find Some Love
05. Takin' Care of Business

Words are never enough for a band with such a history like Bachman & Turner. The band appeared at the mid seventies with the name Bachman & Turner Overdrive, sold about thirty millions of records, awarded with lots of gold and silver discs, composed the anthem “American Woman” ( with Guess Who) and earned the respect of listeners all over the world. After two decades of disbanding the time came for Randy Bachman and Fred Turner to reunite and get in the studio to record the album “Forged In Rock”.

EVA CASSIDY - Simply Eva (2011) thumbup

"Simply Eva" is another collection of posthumous Eva Cassidy recordings, but with a twist: all but one of these performances was recorded with the artist accompanying herself solely, with an acoustic guitar -- either in Chris Biondo's studio or in front of club audiences between 1993-1996. Cassidy's devoted fan base has heard her perform the material before, but not in this way. Her live-in-studio readings of "Wayfaring Stranger," Christine McVie's "Songbird," Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," and Paul Simon's "Kathy's Song" (this one with all verses present) resonate with even more intimacy -- if that is possible -- than the previously released "finished" versions. The reading of "Over the Rainbow" featured here is the one from the Blues Alley performance from the Rainbow video. While Cassidy's version of Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" doesn't top the songwriter's, it does shine brightly, as does her brief a cappella take on "I Know You by Heart." Another surprise is this reading of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," which showcases Cassidy's fingerpicking skills and canny sense of rhythm. If you're a fan, you need this; if you've been wondering what all the fuss is about, the naked intimacy of "Simply Eva" is among the most convincing arguments yet for her posthumous reputation. - cduniverse.com

SCRAPPY JUD NEWCOMB thumbup

Born in Mississippi, "Scrappy" Jud Newcomb got his start in Austin as Stonesian guitarist for relocated roots rockers the Loose Diamonds (1989-1995), fronted by another respected local musician, Troy Campbell. Byzantine, considered the superior release, followed two years later. Newcomb can be seen Thursday nights at the Lucky Lounge with (Small) Faces' keyboardist Ian McLagan, and at the Saxon Pub's Sunday night song swaps with the Resentments, both long-running weekly gigs that help lay claim to Austin's status as the live music capital of the world.

QUEEN - Greatest Hits (1981 & 1991) [2011 Digital Remasters]

Queen began life in 1972, formed by guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor, and bassist Tim Staffell. When Staffell left, May and Taylor elected to form a new band with vocalist Freddie Mercury. Bassist John Deacon completed the lineup. Their self-titled debut fused 70s glam and late 60s heavy rock, and their second album fulfilled their early promise. SHEER HEART ATTACK consolidated their commercial standing. In 1975, they completed the seven-minute mini-opera "Bohemian Rhapsody." The startlingly unique track topped the UK charts for an astonishing nine weeks. The attendant album, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA reached number 1 in the UK and hit the US Top 5. A DAY AT THE RACES continued the bombast, the catchy "Somebody To Love" and anthemic "We Are The Champions" both reaching number 2 in the UK. Queen varied their formula with the 50s-style "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and the disco-influenced "Another One Bites The Dust." In late 1981, Queen were back at number 1 in the UK with "Under Pressure," a collaboration with David Bowie. In 1991, INNUENDO entered the UK charts at number 1. Sadly, the group's career effectively ended with the death of Mercury on 24 November 1991. - cduniverse.com

01. Cattle Call 02. No Good Lover 03. I Want To Be With You Always 04. Barres De La Prison 05. Meds 06. Dang Me 07. Bury Me Not OnThe Lone Prairie 08. That's The Way Love Goes 09. Freight Train 10. Why I'm Walkin' 11. Why Baby Why 12. Return To Me 13. God's Wing'ed Horse

Buddy Miller records as a frontman sparingly -- the last time was in 2009 with wife Julie Miller on the stellar Written in Chalk. He does far more performing and producing, the latter including Patty Griffin's Downtown Church and Robert Plant's Band of Joy offerings. For The Majestic Silver Strings, Miller recruited guitarists Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, and Greg Leisz to join him on a program of classic country songs and a couple of originals. The four guitar players are joined variously by guest vocalists including Griffin, Julie Miller, Shawn Colvin, Emmylou Harris, Lee Ann Womack, and Ann McCrary, and the rhythm section of drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Dennis Crouch. The program is a revisioning of tunes from country's canon that sound timeless against the original material. It is without nostalgia. The dreamy opening notes of "Cattle Call" (inextricably linked with the legendary Eddy Arnold) make it obvious that something special is unfolding. Frisell and Leisz play waltz-time intertwining leads as Ribot adds a requinto and Miller a mandoguitar through a lengthy intro before adding his grainy, crooning voice. The spunky "No Good Lover" is a swinging blues with Frisell and Ribot trading licks before McCrary duets with Miller. Lefty Frizzell's "I Want to Be with You Always" boasts gorgeous guitar slinging, but is eclipsed by the sensual vocal duet between Griffin and Miller. The reading of Roger Miller's "Dang Me" is radical: Chocolate Genius takes the vocal, making it slippery and silvery atop a spooky, swampy nocturnal blues. Elizabeth Cotten's standard "Freight Train" is given a shuffling yet swinging rag treatment with all four guitar players trading fours and eights. Womack contributes two fine vocals: in the forlorn, gauzy "Meds" (written by Ribot) and the heartbreaking "Return to Me," which aches with longing; it's underscored by lovely acoustic work from Ribot on a nylon-string guitar, Miller playing baritone and rounded off by Leisz's steel with Frisell comping. Miller and Ribot duet on a barely contained stomping four-guitar read of the George Jones classic "Why Baby Why." Julie and Frisell wrote the closer, "God's Wing'ed Horse," which is arguably the most nakedly tender, moving piece on the record. She and Buddy duet as Frisell, Ribot, and Leisz wind around one another like vines throughout this intimate gospel song. The Majestic Silver Strings is one of those rare "supergroup" projects that works -- as much by its understatement as its savvy choice of material and excellent performances.

MONTGOMERY GENTRY - My Town (2002)

Montgomery Gentry is an American country music duo composed of vocalists Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry. The two began performing in the 1990s as part of a band which also included Eddie Montgomery's brother, John Michael Montgomery, who left for a solo career in the early 1990s. t's clear from the outset that contemporary country duo Montgomery Gentry aligns itself with some impressive people. Former NRBQ mainman Al Anderson is credited as both guitarist and (on the amiably shuffling "Why Do I Feel Like Running," and engineering duties are handled by none other than legendary George Jones producer Billy Sherrill. That kind of commitment to quality and nod to tradition is reflected in many of the songs on MY TOWN. Despite the politically correct climate so prevalent in 2002 on country radio, MY TOWN never shies away from tales of bad men, hard drinking, and plain old orneriness. And while much of the production has a contemporary sheen, there's no denying the roadhouse roots of many of these tunes, a few of which offer a demonstrable taste for good ol' blues rock (see the Greg Allman/Dickey Betts composition that closes things out). - cduniverse.com

MICHAEL J. SHEEHY AND THE HIRED MOURNERS - With These Hands: The Rise And Fall Of Francis Delaney (2009)

Perhaps the most underrated artist on the globe, Michael J. Sheehy, who fronted the stellar (and criminally unknown) London band, Dream City Film Club in the 1990s, has emerged with a brilliant album that is a song cycle about a boxer named Francis Delaney. The record explores his rise to prominence and details a sad downfall in which the fighter ends up with brain damage known as dementia pugilistica. In the course of fourteen tracks, Sheehy tells the tale through the eyes of several characters, each of whom add their own perspective to the narrative. Musically and lyrically, the album is a compendium of his solo career as several previous songs are alluded to throughout. In typical form, the record is both beautiful and profane, traits of Sheehy’s that make him so unique. With These Hands opens with a song that provides the general story as an afterthought in the form of “Did You Hear About Delaney?” Here, we find out that Delaney took a dive in the ninth round of a title fight, a move that he made for money, which not only soiled his reputation, but also ruined his career. The song is intoxicating with its reverb guitars and Hammond organ. Musically, it sounds like a cross between Nick Cave and Tom Waits.

TRACKS:
01. Did You Hear About Delaney 02. Nobody's Fault But Mine 03. Fight For Your Right To Fight 04. Medal Made Out Of Tin 05. Crooked-Eyed Engineer 06. Don't Let Them Steal Your Soul 07. THE ROLLING STONES - Singles 1963-1965 (2004)

Singles 1963–1965 is a box set compilation of the singles and EPs by The Rolling Stones spanning the years 1963 to 1965. The latest in a series of repackages by ABKCO Records, who licence The Rolling Stones' 1963–1970 recorded works, Singles 1963–1965 is the first of three successive volumes to commemorate their non-LP releases during this era. While the set features faithful replicas of all individual single covers (even the CDs are reproduced in black), the set—and both its successors—came under some criticism as to their necessity, especially as 1989's Singles Collection: The London Years already covered this material to satisfaction. However, Singles 1963-1965 is notable for the first ever CD editions of The Rolling Stones' three British EPs released by Decca Records in 1964 and 1965, reinstating what had been long sought after recordings to the band's catalogue. - wikipedia

DANA GILLESPIE - I Rest My Case (2010)

Vocalist Dana Gillespie's first album was released when she was only 15. Over the next four decades, as a strong presence in the world of music, she was part of the recording of around 40 albums. In the beginning of her career in the '60s, she sang folk tunes. At some point in the '70s, she moved on to rock. By the '80s she turned her attention fully to something that was one of her first loves: the blues. In between all of that recording, Gillespie the actress stayed in the spotlight on the theater stage in shows like Jesus Christ Superstar, and in films like The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Ace's resident diva, Dana Gillespie, returns with her first studio blues album for the label since 2003's Staying Power. All 13 tracks are written by Dana, either on her own or with members of her top-notch band. Dana has told us that she thinks it's the best record she's made for several years and we think it's cracking. It's a potent mix of her tough-and-witty blues stompers (Funk Me, It's Hot!) together with some lyrical ballads that touch on the heartache of break up and loss. All are shot through with Dana's characteristic wit. Full lyrics are included in the booklet.

TRACKS:
01. Funk Me, It's Hot! 02. It's Gonna Be A Long Night 03. Twenty Four Seven 04. When Cries Become Sighs 05. Your Love Is True 06. Strange Are The Ways Of Love 07. Game Over 08. The House Of The Blues 09. Guilty As Hell 10. I Rest My Case 11. Wall-To-Wall Love 12. Unify 13. Could've, Should've, Would've

GREEN BULLFROG - The Green Bullfrog Sessions (1971)

An R&B styled Rock outing recorded at De Lane Lea Studios in 1970 and masterminded by DEEP PURPLE producer Derek Lawrence. Guitarist RITCHIE BLACKMORE and drummer Ian Paice were both members of DEEP PURPLE, veteran session man Big Jim Sullivan taught LED ZEPPELIN's JIMMY PAGE guitar and Albert Lee was previously with both CHRIS FARLOWE and THUNDERBIRDS. Keyboards came from PAICE ASHTON LORD man TONY ASHTON and PROCUL HARUM's Matthew Fisher. Included would be a cover of CREATION's 'Makin' Time'.

The GREEN BULLFROG sessions were originally released with many of the artists cloaked behind pseudonyms and consequently it sold 428 copies upon its original March 1971 Decca release. The cast comprised Earl Jordan (a.k.a. 'Jordan'), Ritchie Blackmore ('Boots'), Albert Lee ('Pinta'), Big Jim Sullivan ('Boss'), Rod Alexander ('Vicar'), Chas Hodges ('Sleepy'), Tony Ashton ('Bevy'), Matthew Fisher ('Sorry') and Ian Paice ('Speedy'). Obviously the record is a highly sought after rarity.

A few years later Sullivan turned up in TIGER and co-produced the first two albums from American Pomp Metal group ANGEL with Derek Lawrence. A Connoisseur Collection 1991 re-release of the GREEN BULLFROG tapes, re-titled 'The Green Bullfrog sessions', added a further three previously unreleased tracks. - rockdetector.com

MICK TAYLOR BAND - Little Red Rooster (2007)

Michael Kevin "Mick" Taylor is an English musician, best known as a former member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (1966–69) and The Rolling Stones (1969–74). During his tenure with those bands, Taylor gained a reputation as a reliable technical guitarist with a preference for blues, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll, and a talent for slide guitar. Since his resignation from the Rolling Stones in December 1974 at age 25, Taylor has worked with numerous other artists as well as releasing a number of solo albums.

Mick Taylor and company deliver a solid outing on this live disc (recorded live in Hungary, 2001) that is steeped in blues. As always Taylor's guitar is the real showcase of the performance, and once again he puts on quite a show for us. This release is well worth adding to your collection if you enjoy blues-based guitar with incredible emotion in every note. - amazon.com

CANDYE KANE - ... 2 Albums ...

Candye Kane is an American singer, songwriter and performer best known in the Blues and Jazz genre. She has been included in the Rolling Stone Guide to Jazz and Blues, Elwoods blues by Dan Aykroyd, The Blueshound Guide to Blues, Allmusic and other blues books and periodicals. Kanes’ live shows are the stuff of legend. She honors the bold blues women of the past with both feet firmly planted in the present. She belts - growls - shouts - croons and moans from a lifetime of suffering and overcoming obstacles. She uses music as therapy and often writes and chooses material with positive affirmations that leave the audience feeling healed and exhilarated.

1997 - Diva La Grande
Though not as polished as her next effort, 1998's Swango, Diva La Grande is a very strong effort from blues belter Candye Kane, and chock full of her concert favorites. There's her standard opener "You Need a Great Big Woman," the true-confessional "Love 'Em & Forgive 'Em," the good-time "I Left My Heart in Texas," and audience favorites "The Lord Was a Woman" (here featuring a guitar solo from Dave Alvin) and "I'm in Love with a Girl." There's also a spirited cover of "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," the jivin' "Freak Lover," and the instrumental "Beehive," a showcase for the considerable talents of pianist Sue Palmer. Overall, it's easy to understand why Candye Kane has attracted a devoted and growing cult following - she's got considerable talent, and an attitude to match. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. You Need a Great Big Woman 02. Love 'Em & Forgive 'Em 03. Freak Lover 04. I Got a Feelin' 05. I Left My Heart in Texas 06. The Lord Was a Woman 07. It Should Be Rainin' 08. 2000 - The Toughest Girl Alive
It might be easy to dismiss Candye Kane as a brazen novelty act, but the girl is so passionate about her decadent philosophy and so lusty a singer that it's difficult to resist her charms. On "The Toughest Girl Alive", Kane teams with some top-flight musicians, including roots star Dave Alvin (guitar), Texas blues luminary Marcia Ball (piano), and veteran blues bassist Larry Taylor. The tunes are a catchy, well-played mix of R&B, swing and rockabilly.
TRACKS:
01. I'm The Toughest Girl Alive 02. Who Do You Love 03. One More Day (Without Your Love) 04. For Your Love 05. Didn't We 06. Who Walks In When I Walk Out 07. To See A Grown Man Cry 08. (Hey Mister!) BONNIE BRAMLETT - I'm Still The Same (2002)

Even those who remember her performances as copilot of the soulful all-star revue called Delaney & Bonnie & Friends will be startled by the intensity of this comeback album. With full-throated, empathetic vocals throughout I'm Still the Same, Bramlett connects a variety of pop traditions, from jump blues to gauzy romantic balladry, and makes it all work. Her ability to read a lyric on tunes like "Hurt" compares to that of Dinah Washington, and not unfavorably. At medium tempos, such as the Santana-style samba of "What If," Bramlett sings comfortably around the beat, working the tension between the steady pulse and her more rubato phrasing. She's strongest, however, when the groove is slow; the 6/8 crawl of "No Man's Land," for example, lets her draw full dramatic effect from the lyric, especially on long notes that she can twist, stretch, and milk dry through a carefully controlled vibrato, subtle timbral variation, and other tools of expression. And her wrenching, intimate revival of "Superstar," sweetened by Mickey Raphael's haunting harmonica fills, will induce chills, whether you remember the '70s or not. - allmusic.com

SUSAN TEDESCHI - Live From Austin TX (2004)

In this 2003 performance from the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD), New England's Susan Tedeschi demonstrates a range that extends well beyond her blues base. Following the blueprint employed by Bonnie Raitt a few decades earlier, she covers John Prine's "Angel from Montgomery" (a signature tune for Raitt), inserting a snippet from the Grateful Dead's "Sugaree." The piano balladry of her "Wrapped in the Arms of Another" could fit just fine on a Raitt album. The set also finds her sampling from the songbooks of Sly Stone ("You Can Make It If You Try"), Bob Dylan ("Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"), and Stevie Wonder ("Love's in Need of Love Today"), in addition to the more straightforward blues of Koko Taylor ("Voodoo Woman"). Though Tedeschi's stinging lead guitar provides the focus, she receives strong support from a band featuring the interplay of electric pianist Jason Crosby (who doubles on violin) and William Green on Hammond B-3 organ. Highlights include a tribute to jam-band inspiration Col. Bruce Hampton on "Hampmotized" and the simmering "Wait for Me," with its echoes of Aretha Franklin. Tedeschi has yet to show the suppleness as a vocalist to complement her guitar chops, but the musical range she displays here bodes well for her artistic development. - amazon.com

MAJOR HANDY - Zydeco Feeling (2009)

Accordion-led and with half the lyrics in French, neither declaration would look likely to the unknowing, but Major Handy offers such bare emotion, building and smoldering, the performance on each song seemingly inspiring the next. This is just a damn fine record, and from an artist few outside of southwest Louisiana will have ever heard. This is the first Zydeco title on APO, and it was after careful consideration that Major Handy was selected as the artist we most wanted to record. It finally became apparent that in Handy we had the opportunity to work with an artist of uncommon power and energy, someone who lays into each of his songs, not "overplaying," mind you, just flat giving it.

QUEEN IDA & HER ZYDECO BAND - On a Saturday Night (1989)

Ida Lewis "Queen Ida" Guillory is an African-American accordionist. She was the first female accordion player to lead a zydeco band. Queen Ida's music is an eclectic mix of R&B, Caribbean, and Cajun, though the presence of her accordion always keeps it traditional. Queen Ida and her band played at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1976 and 1988, and the San Francisco Blues Festival in 1975, 1978, and 1991. In 1988, Queen Ida toured Japan, becoming the first zydeco artist to do so. She toured Africa the following year and in 1990 went to Australia and New Zealand. Through the 2000s she continued to tour and perform, although she did not record any more albums during this period. - wikipedia.org

CLIFTON CHERNIER - Sings the Blues (1992)

Clifton Chenier (1925 - 1987), a Creole French-speaking native of Opelousas, Louisiana, was an eminent performer and recording artist of Zydeco, which arose from Cajun and Creole music, with R&B, jazz, and blues influences. He played the accordion and won a Grammy Award in 1983. He also was recognized with a National Heritage Fellowship, and in 1989 was inducted posthumously into the Blues Hall of Fame.

Recorded in Houston, Texas on April 1, 1969 and Sea-Saint Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana on April 25, 1977. Originally released on Prophesy, Home Cooking/Arhoolie (LP 1097) and Arhoolie (LP 1078). Includes liner notes by Chris Stachwitz. This disc collects two LPs recorded by Clifton Chenier in 1969 and 1977. As the title sests, the emphasis here is on blues interpretations, which range from "Rosemary," a song made popular by Fats Domino in the '50s, to the Glenn Miller signature tune "In the Mood." Also included are some notable Chenier originals and "Paper in My Shoe," which Boozoo Chavis recorded in the early '50s and which became the first zydeco hit single. The 1977 sessions include the great saxophonist John Hart, and Stanley Dural, who would soon make a name for himself as Buckwheat Zydeco, on piano and organ. The rough and tumble feel and strong interplay of the musicians in the studio adds to the immediacy of these sessions.

TRACKS:
01. Ain't No Need Of Crying (Every Day Is The Same) 02. Rosemary 03. Brown Skinned Woman 04. Done Got Over 05. Gone A La Maison 06. Be My Chauffeur 07. My Little Angel 08. Paper In My Shoe 09. THE RESENTMENTS - The Resentments (2004)

On their second outing and first studio effort (their 2002 debut, Sunday Night Line Up was a live album), the Resentments take the leap from occasional jamming collective to full-fledged band. Comprised of guitarist/singers Stephen Bruton, Jon Dee Graham, and Bruce Hughes, as well as bassist Bruce Hughes and drummer John Chipman, each member save Chipman wrote at least one of the 14 tracks on The Resentments, filling out the album with well-chosen covers that highlight the band's mix of personalities. The high point is the album's opener, "Rich Man's War," one of the most pointed commentaries yet on the war in Iraq. "It takes a bucket of blood to buy a barrel of oil," Bruton sings over a raucous bar band stomp; not an original sentiment, but a fine counterpoint to Toby Keith and Darryl Worley. Bruton's honky-tonkin' "Never Slowin' Down" and Hughes' poppy "People Ask Me" provide the disc's other upbeat moments, but the album's real strength comes primarily in its quieter songs, notably Leadbelly's "You Don't Know My Mind" and Big Star's "Thirteen," both sung by Graham, and the Jud Newcomb-sung version of Ronnie Lane's "Annie," all of which gain resonance from the world-weariness of these veterans' voices. - answers.com

This is the first studio release from the Austin, Texas supergroup that includes Stephen Bruton (Bonnie Raitt), Jon Dee Graham (True Believers), Jud Newcomb (Ian McLagan), Bruce Hughes (Cracker), and John Chipman (George Devore).

TRACKS:

AYNSLEY LISTER - Two albums from 2002...

Aynsley Lister is an English blues-rock guitarist/singer and songwriter. Aynsley has never been an artist to reheat the music of yesteryear. Influenced from an early age by the 60’s RnB era, Lister takes these key elements and mixes them with a more current and melodic lyrical approach. He is one of very few artists playing blues infused rock with a modern edge - tangible, heartfelt, soul searching and full of fine songwriting; played with passion and vitality. His hard hitting rhythms and guitar work are reminiscent of a young Clapton. Lister began his career when he signed to Ruf Records in 1998. During his time on the label he worked with producers such as Jim Gaines (SRV, Santana) and Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers) and recorded four studio albums, two live albums and two DVD’s. However, if these earlier albums were Lister making his mark as a well respected blues rock artist, it was when he signed to Manhaton Records in June 2008 that he showed he had more commercial appeal to a bigger audience.

V.A. - Women Live From Mountain Stage (1996)

Mountain Stage is a weekly, two-hour performance radio program broadcast nationally on more than 120 stations. Each show features three or four guest acts that typically defy categorization. Diversity is probably the most appealing aspect of Mountain Stage, which delivers great live performances from artists in the alternative, blues, folk, rock, and world beat genres among others. THE BEST OF MOUNTAIN STAGE Series underscores the broad spectrum of roots music from here and abroad that is represented every week on the program.

THE YAYHOOS

The Yayhoos are an American rock group. The band was once described as the "Harlem Globetrotters of Roots Rock", "a genuine, supergroup of southern-rock and alt.country heavyweights" and just "supergroup". The four bandmates share singing, songwriting and playing duties.

Made up of three singer/songwriters: Dan Baird (Georgia Satellites), Eric Ambel (the Del Lords, Eric Ambel & Roscoe's Gang), Terry Anderson (Woods), and one secret weapon, Keith Christopher (Billy Joe Shaver), the Yayhoos set out to take over the world in 1995. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out that way. After a brief Southern tour with Drivin' N' Cryin' on which the band played a greatest-hits set, the boys wrote a batch of swaggering rock songs to shop around. In 1996, they toured Europe and the U.S. in support of Baird's Buffalo Nickel, and several compilation tracks followed ("California" on East Side Story, "Highway Junkie" on Rig Rock Deluxe, and "Tumblin' Dice" with Johnny Copeland on Paint It Blue: Songs of the Rolling Stones). The major labels' response was that three singers (they had four, actually) in one band was too many; also, grown men with facial hair who play rock & roll are not exactly MTV fare. The Yayhoos released "Fear Not the Obvious" in 2001. Five years later they released "Put the Hammer Down" and continued to tour.

2001 - "Fear Not the Obvious": 01. What Are We Waiting For 02. Get Right With Jesus 03. Monkey with a Gun 04. I Can Give You Everything 05. Bottle and a Bible 06. For Cryin' Out Loud 07. Oh! Chicago 08. Wicked World 09. Baby I Love You 10. Hunt You Down 11. Hankerin' 12. Dancing Queen

ELIZABETH LEE - Milagro (1997)
ELIZABETH LEE - Milagro (1997)

Hailing from Houston, Texas, Elizabeth who counts legendary confederate general Robert Edward Lee to her ancestors, grew up with an earful of Texas rock, Louisiana rhythm and blues, and Southern Baptist gospel music. At the age of ten, she was singing in the local church choir and by fifteen she began writing her own songs. With the music of the Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Little Feat and Bonnie Raitt in her heart, she traded her cowboy boots for Beatle boots, moved to New York City, put a band together, and cut her first CD in 1992, "Texas Bound". You can lead a horse to water ... Back in Texas, she moved to music capital Austin in 1993. With the help of the local blues band, Johnny Reverb, and a new album, "Try A Little Harder", in the lage, Elizabeth took her music to Europe in 1994. The tour was to become a huge success. For the last four years she has continued to tour there regularly to packed houses while receiving accolades from the European press. In 1997, Lee and her husband, renowned Nashville guitarist and producer Larry Chaney, began work on the new album, "Milagro" ("Miracle" in English), which developed into a big bluesy, funky, groovin' mess. From the get-go, Lee's downright muscular voice and soul-statement phrasing infuse every song with a rare urgency. Her settings, built largely by Chaney, range from moody to meditative to maniacally funky. The supporting cast is made up of Nashville's roots-rock session elite: Mickey Grimm, Byron House, Quentin Ware, Tracy Nelson a.o. "Milagro" is not a CD for sitting still and fans of vocal trademarks like Sass Jordan, Lou Ann Barton, Tina Turner or Janis Joplin will have to accept that here is another strong bouncing singer that can funk, rock, jazz and tuck you to bed, exhausted and giddy.

K.D. LANG - Hymns Of The 49th Parallel (2004)
K.D. LANG - Hymns Of The 49th Parallel (2004)

Ron Sexsmith, Bruce Cockburn, and Jane Siberry might not be household names on the order of the aforementioned trio, but they're entirely worthy of the passion with which Lang approaches their tunes here, a particular point of transcendence being achieved on Cockburn's gentle, folkish "One Day I Walk." "But wait," you cry, "what about Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, and the McGarrigle Sisters?" Don't worry; with a talent like Lang's, it's entirely reasonable to assume she'll be on the scene long enough to get around to 49TH PARALLEL PT. II. After tackling almost every conceivable musical style from country to disco to standards, K.D. Lang goes back to her roots with HYMNS OF THE 49TH PARALLEL, covering songs by the greatest songwriters of her Canadian homeland. It should surprise no one to find Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen among the composers whose work is honored here. Lang tackles two songs each by these titanic artists, lending her agile, velvety voice and deceptively easy grace to each, accompanied by a small, acoustic-based combo dominated by piano. - cduniverse.com

EVA CASSIDY [Method Actor Band] - Method Actor (1988)
EVA CASSIDY [Method Actor Band] - Method Actor (1988)

Before the late Eva Cassidy pursued a solo career, she was the lead singer for Method Actors -- an obscure Washington D.C.-based pop/rock outfit that producer/songwriter/guitarist David Christopher founded in 1987. Commercially, Method Actors didn't get very far, and the little-known band provided only one album during its three-year existence. This self-titled effort, in fact, had very limited distribution when Christopher released it on vinyl and cassette in 1988; a mere 2,000 copies were manufactured. And after Cassidy's death from cancer in 1996, Method Actors' LP/cassette became a collector's item - hard-to-find copies were selling for as much as 500 dollars on the e-bay website. But in 2002, this album became much easier to obtain when Q&W Music Group reissued it on CD and added two 1989 recordings as bonus tracks ("The Waiting Is Over" and "Little Children"). Those who know Cassidy for her rootsier solo efforts of the '90s might be surprised to learn that a slicker approach prevails on Method Actors' album, but slick doesn't necessarily mean unfeeling or without substance -- and Cassidy's soulfulness comes through on songs (all of which Christopher wrote or co-wrote) that range from the melancholy "Stay" to the sentimental ballad "Forever." The CD's most rootsy offering is the blues-rock number "Getting Out"; this is the track that has the most in common with Cassidy's '90s solo work. Is Method Actors' album in a class with Cassidy's best solo projects? No; when these recordings were made in 1987, 1988, and 1989, the singer's best performances were yet to come. Nonetheless, all of the material is pleasing and enjoyable, and Cassidy's hardcore fans will find that these recordings have a great deal of historic value. ~ AllMusicGuide

THE DEL-LORDS - Get Tough: The Best Of The Del-Lords (1999)

Formed in the early '80s by ex-Dictators guitarist Scott Kempner, the Del Lords combined elements of '60s garage rock with country, blues, and folk influences to become one of the initial progenitors of roots rock. Kempner recruited former Joan Jett guitarist Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, bassist Manny Caiati, and drummer Frank Funaro, and the Del Lords released their first disc, Frontier Days, on Enigma/EMI in 1984. The album was noted for its guts, street smarts, and twangy guitars, a balanced blend of Springsteen meets Johnny Thunders. Their follow-up Enigma/EMI release, Johnny Comes Marching Home, found Pat Benatar producer Neil Geraldo at the helm. While the band had became tighter, Geraldo applied a poppy gloss that seemingly toned down the grittier aspects of their debut. All the right elements fell into place by the time their album Based On a True Story was released in 1988, with Geraldo commendably pulling back his slicker production technique, allowing the louder aspects of the band to break through. The album is also notable for the support of guest vocalists Pat Benatar, Syd Straw, Kim Shattuck, and Mojo Nixon. The raucous EP Howlin' at the Halloween Moon captured the band in its live element, performing five tracks from the first three albums along with spirited covers of the Flamin' Groovies "Jumpin' in the Night" and Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon's "Tallahassee Lassie." In 1990 the Del Lords recorded their final album, Lovers Who Wander, and although some of the rough edges were smoothed out, the graceful emotional conviction made their swansong just as appealing as any of their previous studio releases. Eric "Roscoe" Ambel officially quit the Del Lords in 1991, as he had already released a solo album, Roscoe's Gang. Eight years later the Restless label finally got around to releasing "Get Tough: The Best of the Del-Lords". ~ answers.com
