CLIFTON CHERNIER - Sings the Blues (1992)

Clifton Chenier (1925 - 1987), a Creole French-speaking native of Opelousas, Louisiana, was an eminent performer and recording artist of Zydeco, which arose from Cajun and Creole music, with R&B, jazz, and blues influences. He played the accordion and won a Grammy Award in 1983. He also was recognized with a National Heritage Fellowship, and in 1989 was inducted posthumously into the Blues Hall of Fame.

Recorded in Houston, Texas on April 1, 1969 and Sea-Saint Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana on April 25, 1977. Originally released on Prophesy, Home Cooking/Arhoolie (LP 1097) and Arhoolie (LP 1078). Includes liner notes by Chris Stachwitz. This disc collects two LPs recorded by Clifton Chenier in 1969 and 1977. As the title sests, the emphasis here is on blues interpretations, which range from "Rosemary," a song made popular by Fats Domino in the '50s, to the Glenn Miller signature tune "In the Mood." Also included are some notable Chenier originals and "Paper in My Shoe," which Boozoo Chavis recorded in the early '50s and which became the first zydeco hit single. The 1977 sessions include the great saxophonist John Hart, and Stanley Dural, who would soon make a name for himself as Buckwheat Zydeco, on piano and organ. The rough and tumble feel and strong interplay of the musicians in the studio adds to the immediacy of these sessions.
