KIM RICHEY - Kim Richey (1995)

Kimberly Kay "Kim" Richey is an American singer/songwriter. Though her work fits into the general country music category, her sound is not easily categorized. Her songs have been hits on both the country and pop charts. She has often been described as an Americana artist. Richey finds her inspiration in the Southern-California country-rock of Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles, and the folk-rock of Tom Petty and the Byrds. The album is full of Beatles-esque touches, such as the string quartet on "Can't Find the Words," the odd McCartney-esque intervals on "Let the Sun Fall Down," or the open tuning and uptempo, three-part vocal harmonies on "Good." If Nashville labels can keep releasing country tributes to the Beatles, surely there's room in town for a woman who can come up with new Beatles-esque songs. And inasmuch as Richey is exploring the strain of the Beatles' music that comes straight out of the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly, surely there's a country audience for her. - amazon.com

PO' GIRL - Po' Girl (2003)

Po' Girl is a Canadian group whose style derives from folk, country and jazz. The style of music they perform is called "urban roots." The band evolved from a series of jam sessions, in 2000, between Trish Klein of The Be Good Tanyas and Allison Russell, then of Fear of Drinking. The two met up again in 2003 and named themselves Po' Girl. The Be Good Tanyas broke out of Vancouver with a style that mixed mountain music with just a hint of urban funk. Po' Girl, an offshoot project with BGT singer-guitarist-banjo picker Trish Klein and another Vancouver folkie, Allison Russell, mines a similar vein of back-porch, acoustic intimacy, but moves the music from the hills and hollers of Appalachia to the moss-drenched balconies of Nawlins. Russell's singing evidences a slurred, breathy quality similar to Klein's BGT partners Frazey Ford and Samantha Parton - the Vancouver sound seems to involve a sort of mumbled, intermittently intelligible delivery that is no less evocative for being difficult to decipher. On "Bad Luck Day Baby" Russell breaks it up with bluesy belting that recalls a more energetic Norah Jones. "Bleak St." shows that, like the Tanyas, Po' Girl can groove without getting loud, and they write songs that rest comfortably alongside classic tunes like Lester Brown's "Abilene." They may even be great songs: it would be easier to tell if you could understand more of the words. Still, BGT fans won't be disappointed, nor will anyone interested in what folk might sound like in the future. - amazon.com

BONNIE RAITT - Bonnie Raitt And Friends (2006)

This CD release presents a 2005 concert by Bonnie Raitt in which the revered blues-rock singer/guitarist is joined by a number of high-profile guests. Although the audio portion of the set features fewer tracks than its visual companion, the CD still makes room for appearances by Alison Krauss (the delicate "You"), Ben Harper (the slightly funky "Two Lights in the Nighttime"), and Norah Jones (the gentle "I Don't Want Anything to Change"). One of the most notable highlights of the show, however, is Raitt's duet with her own band's keyboardist/vocalist Jon Cleary on the playful "Unnecessarily Mercenary," which allows Raitt to alternate her stinging six-string lines with groove-laden riffing, and match her wonderfully raspy voice with the soulful singing of Cleary. Also boasting a number of stellar Raitt solo tracks woven into the set list (including the beautifully atmospheric "God Was in the Water"), this offering is a must-have for her devoted fans, and its appeal is only widened by the presence of her well-selected collaborators. - cduniverse.com

SHERYL CROW - Hits and Rarities (2007)

Released for the British market, "Hits and Rarities" combines a good basic Sheryl Crow hits compilation with a collection of rarities that are either not that rare or interesting. The first disc is the stronger of the two, containing almost all of her big hits, not presented chronologically but presented entertainingly and not leaning too heavily on any particular era. Here, there are a few minor rarities - the alternate Corrs version of "C'mon C'mon," soundtrack contributions to the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, the film Home of the Brave ("Try Not to Remember"), and her unfortunate cover of Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child O' Mine" from Adam Sandler's Big Daddy - which actually seem rarer than the stuff on the second disc. Seven of the 12 tracks there are live, many taken from the 2003 Live at Budokan, then there are two alternate takes, the B-sides "Chances Are," "Subway Ride," and a 1996 cover of Derek & the Dominos' "Keep on Growing." Nothing bad here, but hardly a worthy collection of Crow's stray tracks and certainly not worth seeking out, as it's neither complete nor really compelling. But the hits disc is good and if you're in the home territory, or find this at a bargain price, it's a nice - if not necessary - package overall. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - Alligator Records 40th Anniversary Collection (2011)

Alligator Records is home to some of the world's foremost blues and roots rock talent and is regarded by fans and the media alike as the top contemporary blues record label in the world. The Washington Post said, "Alligator is the premiere blues label." The Chicago Sun-Times added, "Alligator is numero uno among indie blues labels, with artists representing the best in contemporary blues." Alligator Records celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2011 with the release of The Alligator Records 40th Anniversary Collection. The 2-CD set clearly lays out Iglauer's wide-ranging blues vision. From the ragged glory of Hound Dog Taylor to the raw Chicago blues of Koko Taylor, Son Seals, Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials, Lonnie Brooks and Eddy Clearwater to the harmonica workouts of Charlie Musselwhite, William Clarke, James Cotton and Rick Estrin to the guitar pyrotechnics of Guitar Shorty, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Michael "Iron Man" Burks and Tinsley Ellis to the front porch roots-rock of JJ Grey & Mofro to the gospel soul of Mavis Staples, the one constant is Alligator's dedication to releasing what has been dubbed "Genuine Houserockin' Music." From the early days of recording only Chicago blues artists to the addition of national and international artists to the label's commitment to younger roots acts who are creating new blues for a new millennium, Alligator continues to forge ahead. Even after 40 years, Alligator is committed to discovering great new talent, proving that the passion, soul and redemptive power of blues and roots music is alive, well and genuine, capable of rocking the house for many more years to come. - amazon.com

LUCINDA WILLIAMS Blessed - Deluxe Edition (2011) thumbup thumbup thumbup

Considered by many to be one of America's greatest living songwriters, Williams lives up to that and more by delivering 12 new songs that cover an even wider emotional spectrum than her previous work, without moving too far in any one direction. Blessed opens with the gritty kiss-off "Buttercup" then moves seamlessly into the sultry blues of "Born To Be Loved". Williams delves into a heavier subject as she questions the motives for a suicide on the hard-driving "Seeing Black", which features blistering guitar from Elvis Costello. The thoughtful title track slowly builds to a melodic climax as it offers an eye-opening look at what's right in front of us, but too often unnoticed. The poignant and powerful "Soldier's Song" simultaneously tells a tragic story of the soldier overseas and his wife and child back home. On the gorgeous "Kiss Like Your Kiss", Williams lays down one of the most beautiful and fragile vocals she has ever recorded. The original version of "Kiss Like Your Kiss" appeared on the True Blood: Music From The HBO Original Series - Volume 2 and was just nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Song written for motion picture, television or other visual media. It's nothing new to see Williams tug at the heartstrings and stimulate the mind with her songs, but there is a vibe throughout Blessed that is unique to this album in-particular. It's the sound of the wisdom and experience Williams has gained through her years as an uncompromising talent. Combine that with Grammy Award-winning producer Don Was at the helm, and something special is born. Was co-produced Blessed with Eric Liljestrand and Tom Overby, who co-produced Williams highly-praised Little Honey (2008). Blessed features special guests Rami Jaffe on keyboards, Matthew Sweet on vocals Greg Leisz and Elvis Costello on guitar.

The Deluxe Edition comes with a bonus disc called 'The Kitchen Tapes'. These are the demos Lucinda recorded of the songs that became Blessed right as they were born at her kitchen table, where she does most of her writing. To further enhance Lucinda's vision, The Deluxe Edition is available with 8 different album cover images randomly distributed through the manufacturing process. The one cover you get may not be the one you see here, but we're sure you'll agree it's an equally powerful image and another facet of this incredible album. - amazon.com

JEFF BECK - Rock 'n' Roll Party - Honoring Les Paul (2011)

Rock And Roll Party To Honor Les Paul, Jeff Beck's Concert Tribute To The Iconic Guitarist Recorded This Summer At The Iridium Jazz Club In New York City. Jeff Beck paid fitting tribute to Les Paul last summer, celebrating what would have been the pioneering guitarist's 95th birthday by playing his friend and mentor's music, along with classic tunes from the era, in the same Times Square nightclub that Les Paul played every Monday for 14 years, before his death in August 2009. Sponsored by Gibson Guitar and billed as 'A Celebration of Les Paul,' Jeff Beck was joined by The Imelda May Band at the Iridium Jazz Club on June 9th, 2010. The two-time Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee mesmerized the star-studded audience with a tour de force performance of classics that Paul recorded with Mary Ford, 'How High The Moon,' 'Vaya Con Dios' and 'Mockin' Bird Hill,' along with such rock and roll standards as 'Twenty Flight Rock' and 'Walking In The Sand.' Following this release, Beck will take the 'Rock And Roll Party' on the road for a short U.S. tour. Beck will once again be backed by The Imelda May Band and its enchanting singer, Imelda May, who joined Beck on stage at the 2010 Grammy® Awards for a spot-on rendition of Paul's 'How High The Moon.'

PBS will give fans a first look at a unique edition of this performance with the premiere of 'Jeff Beck Honors Les Paul,' a concert special that captures the first night of 'The Celebration to Honor Les Paul,' which was recorded on June 9, 2010, what would have been Les Paul's 95th birthday. Special guest performers included Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews, Gary U.S. Bonds and Brian Setzer, who traded riffs with Beck on Eddie Cochran's rockabilly classic 'Twenty Flight Rock.' - amazon.com

ANGELA STREHLI - Blonde & Blue (2003)

Angela Strehli is an American electric blues singer and songwriter. She is also a Texas blues historian and impresario. Despite a sporadic recording career, Strehli spends time each year performing in Europe, the US and Canada. Angela Strehli is one of those most responsible for making Austin a roots music mecca in the '70s and '80s (she was a force behind both Antone's, the club and the label). Though she's been a San Francisco Bay Area resident for the last few years, Blonde & Blue, finds her back in Austin working with a faithful cast of Lone Star regulars. Actually, remakes of soul staples "Never Like This Before" and "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um" were cut with different lineups; the latter, which features soul singer Don Covey and guitarist Steve Cropper, is a highlight. Not too surprisingly, Strehli proves again that she's a surefooted and sympathetic interpreter of classic blues and soul, plus she tosses in four originals. - amazon.com

TIFT MERRITT - Bramble Rose (2002) & Tambourine (2004) thumbup

Singer/songwriter Tift Merritt seemingly appeared out of nowhere in the spring of 2002 with her acclaimed debut album Bramble Rose, but as is often the case, this triple-threat artist - a gifted singer, superb songwriter, and skillful guitarist - actually has plenty of experience under her belt. With oodles of critical praise but disappointing commercial response, Tift Merritt's terrific 2002 debut was a qualified success. On her follow-up two years later, she gradually but decidedly moves her ringing country rock toward a more classic soul sound. With producer George Drakoulias - who mined similar territory with Maria McKee - providing the musical muscle, the album is an impressive accomplishment. Merritt sure has the pipes for this stirring soul/Americana music. She sings with an aching acquiescence common to country artists such as Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton, but belts out these tunes with the power of Linda Ronstadt in her prime. Drakoulias wisely places her tough yet tender vocals front and center in the mix, leaving her faceless but competent backup musicians to carry the bluesy twang she has perfected here. Dusty Springfield and McKee have both covered this ground, but on Memphis soul shots like "Good Hearted Man" and especially "Your Love Made a U Turn" with full, blaring horns and R&B backing vocals, the effect is explosive and revelatory. "Ain't Looking Closely" takes its ringing guitar straight from Roger McGuinn's Byrds days, but the meaty approach and chorus is strictly Southern. The blues that infuses "Still Pretending" adds a torchy Dwight Yoakam/George Jones approach with Merritt projecting hurt resignation on top of subtle strings and a classic country sound out of the '60s. "The Plainest Thing" strips down the backing to bare organ, brushed drums, and spare guitar, leaving plenty of room for Merritt's luxurious voice. But it's the more upbeat tracks that rule, as Merritt and Drakoulias' firm control and extraordinary sense of dynamics shoot this album into orbit. Tambourine is a remarkably mature, confident, and commanding release that defines then rides its groove with no low points. It should make Merritt the star she deserves to be.

GOLDEN EARRING - The Continuing Story of Radar Love (1989)

"The Continuing Story of Radar Love" is a 12-song hits collection from Dutch rock band Golden Earring, containing both the chug-a-long rock staple "Radar Love" and the full eight-minute version of "Twilight Zone." These two songs are the most renowned on this compilation and both cracked the Top 20, with "Radar Love" hitting number 13 in 1974 and "Twilight Zone" peaking at number ten nine years later. The other ten songs on the album consist of long, heavy guitar-filled runs that surround obscure lyrics, sometimes sounding like modern psychedelia. Some of the songs, like "The Vanilla Queen" and "Mad Love's Comin'" harbor a distinguishable progressive edge, thanks to woven keyboard and guitar interplay. A mild blues and rock feel creep into such tunes as "Candy's Going Bad" and "Lost and Found" but fail to ignite any type of serious musical flare compared to their two singles. Much of Golden Earring's music consists of average rock riffs that are either sped up or slowed down by accompanying synthesizer, helped along by the mysteriousness of Barry Hay's voice. Even though this compilation is a dozen songs deep, it still holds as a worthy best-of.

TRACKS:
01. Radar Love 02. The Vanilla Queen 03. Candy's Going Bad 04. She Flies on Strange Wings 05. Ce Soir 06. Mad Love's Comin' 07. Leather 08. Clear Night Moonlight 09. Lost and Found 10. The Devil Made Me Do It 11. Quiet Eyes 12. Twilight Zone

JAN AKKERMAN - From The Basement (1984) [1998 Remastered]

Remastered reissue of the original LP, released in 1984. The bonus tracks that can be found on this first CD reissue of "From The Basement" consist for the greater part of a session with bass guitar player Freddy Cavalli, recorded in Jan’s garage in 1988 entitled 'The Love Is Uneven Suite'. Liner notes by Jan Akkerman. Previously unavailable on CD. Includes nine nonus tracks. Showcasing Akkerman's heavier side, "From The Basement" is full of suprises from a Reggae version of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" with Dino Walcott on vocals to an extended jam at the end of the CD which will blow you completely away. Jan just let's her rip for 15 minutes. A heavier updated version of an oldie but a goldie appears in the form of Dark Rose from the Brainbox days, with Kaz Lux dropping in to provide the vocal power. In a more thoughtful track Jan pays a mesmerizing musical tribute to Raoul Wallenberg using the Roland synth axe to great advantage. The remaining tracks signal a return to the old- style electric guitar wizard Akkerman was known for while playing in Focus in the seventies.

TRACKS:
01. Headbanger 02. All Along The Watchtower 03. Dark Rose 04. Wallenberg 05. From The Basement 06. P.C.B. Chicken 07. Status Quo 08. She Let Me Do What I Want 09. Blues From The Tews 10. Cherubim & Sepharim 11. She Can't Say Don't 12. Took Her To Locronan 13. Then Rollright Stones (The Tews) 14. No More Parking 15. When I Was A Cocktail In A Waitress Bar 16. Ellington's Way

MELANIE - On Air (1997)

Featuring a series of live recordings covering a period of 20 years this CD provides excellent sound and a unique record of Melanie's live and session work for the BBC. The first 10 tracks feature a concert recorded for the BBC Radio One In Concert series in 1975. Track 5 is incorrectly listed and is actually a song called Here We Go Again. During this concert Melanie is accompanied by Barry Lee Harwood on guitar and mandolin. Barry played on Sunsets and Other Beginnings and As I See It Now but fails to be credited on the cover of the CD. Tracks 11 to 14 are rare session recordings from 1969, just Melanie and her guitar. Visit My Dreams is perhaps better known as Deep Down Low from Melanie's second album. While all tracks have so far featured acoustic versions of songs, the last four feature Melanie with a full band. The tracks where recorded during a visit to the UK to promote Cowabonga. The musicians that accompany Melanie also accompanied her during two concerts at the Shaw Theatre in London in 1989.

PERCY SLEDGE - The Atlantic Recordings [Box set, Limited Edition, Rhino] (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Rhino Handmade unveils the first comprehensive collection of Percy Sledge's recordings for Atlantic. This four-disc set spans 1966-74 with 104 songs, including both studio and live recordings as well as several rare and unreleased tracks. The music, arranged mostly in chronological order, offers a richly detailed portrait of the King of Country Soul's career following the massive success of "When A Man Loves A Woman." In fact, the song is featured twice, opening the collection with the well-known studio version and closing it with an alternate take recorded during the same session. The first three discs capture Sledge's meteoric rise, drawing from his singles and four studio albums, which feature stellar playing by some of Muscle Shoals' most talented studio aces. Among the tracks featured are the singer's Top Ten R&B hits: "It Tears Me Up," "Warm And Tender Love," and "It's All Wrong But It's Alright"; plus standouts: "Out Of Left Field," "Cover Me," "Take Time To Know Her," "Sudden Stop," and "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road." The collection gathers a number of rare recordings as well, including several songs released exclusively overseas on albums like Wanted (1969, South Africa), My Special Prayer (1970, Netherlands), The Golden Voice Of Soul (1974, Germany), and a Christmas single from 1969 that was released only in the Netherlands and featured "Silent Night" b/w "Christmas Wish." The collection wraps up with five performances recorded live in 1970 when Sledge traveled to South Africa, where he played to hysterical sold-out crowds for 17 straight weeks. Recorded at Johannesburg's Empire Theatre, the performances featured here are: "Cover Me," "Knock On Wood," "Any Day Now," "Come Softly To Me," and "Heart Of A Child."

OTIS REDDING - Love Man (1969)

A batch of posthumous Otis Redding albums was released between the singer's 1967 death and 1970. Other than the immortal DOCK OF THE BAY, 1969's "Love Man" is probably the best. It's hard to believe tunes like the jubilant "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher" and the breathlessly lusty "Love Man" were just languishing in the archives, but they're as arresting as almost anything else in the soul giant's regrettably slim catalogue. Out of print in the U.S.! UK CD pressing of this 1969 release from the Soul belter. While Otis Redding died in 1967, just as he was achieving the success he so richly deserved, his recorded output proves that his talents were in full force even before the world began to take notice. This album was released posthumously and consists of recordings that Otis had been making in 1967. Features the hits 'Love Man' and 'Free Me' - cduniverse.com

BIG HEAD BLUES CLUB - 100 Years of Robert Johnson (2011)

Big Head Blues Club is actually Big Head Todd And The Monsters, with several very special guest musicians. The album, as the title sests, is a tribute to Robert Johnson, who was born on May 8, 1911. Robert Johnson has had a tremendous influence on the course of popular music - not just blues, but rock and folk as well. Anyone who knows anything about music has heard of him, which is amazing considering he actually recorded only twenty-nine songs, and all of them were in 1936 and 1937. He died at that weird and notable age of 27 (paving the way for Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, and Kurt Cobain - who all died at that same age). His death as well as his life is the stuff of legend. The story is that he had made a deal with the devil, promising his soul in order to become a master musician. And then in 1938, he was playing at a country dance in Mississippi. As the story goes, Johnson was flirting with a married woman (in some accounts, she was the wife of the owner of the venue), and her husband poisoned him, putting strychnine in his open bottle of whiskey.

This CD showcases ten of Robert Johnson's best (?) songs, and features some amazing guest musicians, including B.B. King, Ruthie Foster and Charlie Musselwhite.

PJ HARVEY - Let England Shake (2011)

2011 album from the critically adored British singer/songwriter. Let England Shake was recorded in a 19th Century church in Dorset, on a cliff-top overlooking the sea. It was created with a cast of musicians including such long-standing allies as Flood, John Parish, and Mick Harvey. What is remarkable about Let England Shake is bound up with its music, its abiding atmosphere and in particular, its words. If Harvey's past work might seem to draw of direct emotional experience, this album is rather different. Its songs centre on both her home country, and events further afield in which it has embroiled itself. The lyrics return, time and again, to the matter of war, the fate of the people who must do the fighting, and events separated by whole ages, from Afghanistan to Gallipoli. The album they make up is not a work of protest, nor of strait-laced social or political comment. It brims with the mystery and magnetism in which she excels. But her lyric-writing in particular has arrived at a new, breathtaking place, in which the human aspects of history are pushed to the foreground. Put simply, not many people make records like this. - amazon.com

COWBOY JUNKIES - Demons: The Nomad Series, Volume 2 (2011)

"Demons", the second album in the four-volume Nomad Series on Cowboy Junkies own Latent Recordings. A collection of songs by the late Vic Chesnutt, "Demons" is described by frontman Michael Timmins as a labour of love that explores Chesnutt s deep and much overlooked catalogue. "Demons" follows the critically acclaimed first volume of the series, "Renmin Park", which The Boston Herald called their most ambitious album yet. The band approached Chesnutt s music with the same sense of adventure that Chesnutt approached his own recordings. Timmins says: "We let happy accidents happen and tried to invest his songs with the same spirit in which they were written, but at the same time adding our own Northern spin. Exploring his songs and delving deeper and deeper into them has been an intense, moving and joyous experience. I don't think Vic would have wanted it any other way". - amazon.com

MARTHA'S TROUBLE - Anchor Tattoo (2011)

Six years ago, Martha’s Trouble, an Americana folk/pop duo, released a nationally, critically acclaimed album, “Forget October.” Since, the duo has all but been quiet, touring the country, writing and recording, preparing for the next leg of their epic adventure.

The new album, Anchor Tattoo takes the duo back to their roots, bringing back their signature sound – an Americana/folk album with pop essence – that made them touch so many when they first came to the music scene 12 years ago. “I think we went through a discovery process trying different things over the years and landed on what I would say our strength is,” Jen said. “But it took some trying. I think that’s good though. You try different things and you come to a place where you belong, where you fit. That’s what we did. And now we are stronger than ever.” “Our fans can expect a very fresh, honest, uplifting album. It’s very true to ourselves,” Jen said. “It’s who we are. We are not trying to be like any other band or trying to be like the next trend in music. I think our fans who like us ‘live’ as a duo or trio, will like this record. It is still a fully produced record, but it’s not overdone. We were able to spend a lot of time with it and it is our most thoughtful, mature record to date.”

TRACKS:
01. I Saw An Angel 02. Love Revolution 03. Anchor Tattoo 04. The Sun Will Shine Again 05. I Will Wait (Song Of Moses) 06. The Hiding 07. Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now 08. Why 09. Red Door 10. Better Part Of Us 11. Let Justice Rule

SIOBHAN MAHER - KENNEDY - Immigrant Flower (2002)

Siobhan Maher-Kennedy is an English singer and songwriter. Maher (who later became Maher-Kennedy when she married producer Ray Kennedy) started her career with a number of children's television shows in the mid-1980's. Before she became better known for her magnificent singing voice. In 2002, Maher-Kennedy, as she was now officially known, recorded and released a stunning album titled "Immigrant Flower," perhaps her best record to date. With rollicking songs like "Fearless Heart," "Kiss On The Lips," and "Why'd You Have To Be So Good To Me," Maher-Kennedy's first real solo release is a must-have for any afficionado of strong, sensuous, and heartfelt female vocalists. Sadly, "Immigrant Flower" is also Maher-Kennedy's last album to date, and fans are both anxious and eager to know if and when she will release another album. She is too precious a talent to risk fading into obscurity, and one can only hope she will make a return to the studio someday.

LOUISE HOFFSTEN - From Linköping To Memphis (2005)

Louise Hoffsten is a megastar in her native Sweden. Since 1987 she has released recordings that have captured the hearts of her countryfolk and left them wanting more. As both a singer and a songwriter she has an uncanny knack for delivering pictures of the human condition in all its frailty, ambition, desire, vulnerability, and bravado. She is loved by performers from Marcia Ball to k.d. lang to Nancy Sinatra. From Linköping to Memphis is, in its own way, the story of a journey from her native village in Sweden to the heart of soul and funk, Memphis (and she records for the Memphis International record label now). Recorded at Ardent Studios, From Linköping to Memphis features some of the storied city's finest session men, including guitarist Steve Selvidge, keyboardist Lester Snell, bassist David Smith, and drummer Steve Potts. The horn players include stalwarts Jim Spake on saxophone and Scott Thompson on trumpet. Hoffsten co-wrote all but one track on this set with her songwriting partner, Peter Kvint, and others. Tracks range from the gritty soul-funk of "Good for You" and the reeling "Slow Train" to steamy jazzed-up soul ballads like "Fall Like Babylon," with Spake doing his best Ben Webster imitation. But there's more. There's the acoustically flavored country-ish ballad "Make the Most of It" and the folksy heartbreaker "Rise," which is pure poetry. Then there's sweltering straight-up gritty soul of "I Wish You Had My Heart" and the pumped-up rock & roll sass of "Shut Up & Kiss Me." There's so much here and it's all so utterly naked and honest, brimming with emotion and attitude, that there's something here for everyone. From Linköping to Memphis is a small marvel, a jewel in the rough that deserves to be heard and embraced. - cduniverse.com

KISS - MTV Unpled (1996) thumbup

On August 9, 1995, hard rock band Kiss performed on MTV Unpled in what fans consider the beginning of the eventual Kiss Reunion Tour. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons contacted former members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley and invited them to participate in the event. Fan reaction to Criss and Frehley at the Unpled show was so positive that, in 1996, the original lineup of Kiss reunited, with all four original members together for the first time since 1980. It also marked the only time the original lineup performed live without their trademark makeup, other than at Ace Frehley's wedding, and was also the only time Frehley and Criss shared a stage with Eric Singer and Bruce Kulick. Further, it was the first time Eric Singer had part of a lead vocal (shared with Peter Criss on Nothin' To Lose). - wikipedia

AEROSMITH - Honkin' On Bobo (2003)

Aerosmith are one of the few arena-sized bands still capable of playing it down-to-earth when the occasion calls. For Honkin' on Bobo, the boys return to their bar band roots (and fire a warning shot at Jack White) with this set of classic blues and soul covers generously peppered with harmonica, horns, and boogie-woogie piano. For years, Aerosmith sprinkled similar ditties on their LPs, but devoting a whole disc to material associated with John Lee Hooker, Mississippi Fred McDowell, et al? That takes chutzpah, and they've got it to spare here. "Shame, Shame, Shame" is a finger-waggin', hip-shakin' romp, while "Baby, Please Don't Go" starts out spooky, then escalates as Steven Tyler builds to a full-throttle holler with Joe Perry's guitar blazing his backside all the way. Tyler even snatches one signature song ("Never Loved A Girl") away from the Queen of Soul...at least for a few minutes.

With "Honkin' On Bobo", Aerosmith takes a break from radio-ready fare to record an album that pays tribute to the blues influences that have always been close at hand for the group. Further enhancing the sound of this project is the presence of storied pianist Johnnie Johnson (on two tracks) and Jack Douglas, the producer for many of Aerosmith's classic 1970s albums. - cduniverse.com

ROY BUCHANAN - The Definitive Collection (2006)

There have been numerous Roy Buchanan collections to hit the streets since the guitarist committed suicide in 1988. There have been no less than four issued by Universal, with just enough of the same material to be irritating. Definitive Collection is no exception. There isn't anything here that's unreleased. Some of these items have been hard to get hold of for a little while, such as the closing read of "Hey Joe," which originally appeared on an album called Live in Japan from 1978 and was collected on the double-disc Sweet Dreams anthology in 1992. The best thing here is the reading of Neil Young's "Down by the River," which has been out of print since Sweet Dreams left the shelves in the mid-'90s. "Baltimore" is here from the unreleased first album "The Prophet" (with Charlie Daniels) - and from the sound of this cut, it seems that album was better off left that way - Buchanan hated it. Fans will be familiar with all of the material here, and those considering being introduced to Buchanan could very well start here, or with any of the other Universal collections since they're all full of both classics and filler. - allmusic.com

V.A. - Sacred Steel - Live! (1999) thumbup

Thanks to Arhoolie Records' sacred steel series, we now get to hear one of the least publicized, most fascinating forms of gospel music around: the electric-lap and pedal-steel-guitar playing found in House of God churches across the United States. Influenced by Hawaiian music, blues, R&B, and loaded with soul, this is gospel like you've never heard before. And heard live, the effect of these rambunctious spirituals is all the more stirring. The Campbell Brothers steal the show here, from the almost Hendrix-y "God Is a Good God" (with Katie Jackson doing the vocal work) to "Celebration in Giving," a stirring blend of Chicago blues-meets-gospel. Willie Eason's "Take Your Burden to the Lord" may lack the guitar pyrotechnics of the Campbell boys but its message is just as touching. If you like your gospel charged with electricity, literally and figuratively, this is a must-have disc. And, though no small task, it's arguably the most awe inspiring of the entire Sacred Steel collection.

"Sacred steel" refers to the electric-lap- and pedal-steel-guitar playing found in House of God churches across the United States. This rambunctious, blistering, and sanctified live recording bears witness to the wide appeal of this music; it's totally pure and unaffected stuff that blues and rock fans are bound to enjoy as much as anybody. - amazon.com

ELENI MANDELL - Country For True Lovers (2003)

Eleni Mandell takes a different approach with this album, offering up a batch of gin-soaked, traditional honky tonk numbers that bring to mind previous singers like Brenda Lee, Connie Francis, and Patsy Cline. The introductory "Another Lonely Heart" has the singer giving a credible performance that nails each tear-at-your-heartstrings note. Greg Leisz has an important part on the song with a great pedal steel guitar solo, but it's the mix of whispery jazz and country that Mandell excels at. "Don't Say You Care" falls along the same vein, with the slow and mournful melody carrying the song. "Refrain" is another quality performance, as Mandell does her best rendition of a tune screaming to be performed at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. An interesting cover is Merle Haggard's "I've Got a Tender Heart," which has a definitive upbeat swing. "I'll get over you and make a brand new start," she sings behind a stellar cast of supporting musicians. The flow each song has can't be underestimated, giving each a timeless quality. A departure from the country mold is the blues-tinged "It's Raining," a number that seems a bit out of place here. One of the album's high points is the sparse yet cozy Celtic folk feeling on "Kingsport Town," a tune that predominantly resembles Cowboy Junkies. "You're All Bad (And That's Why You've Been Invited!)" is a tad wordy in places, but it has a punchy, bouncy Bonnie Raitt quality that works. "Home" consists of just vocal, acoustic guitar, and pretty backing harmonies that could be mistaken for Alison Krauss, except for the French verse. Overall, it's an album well worthy of its title. - cduniverse.com

SMOKIN' JOE KUBEK & BNOIS KING - Roadhouse Research (2003)

If the 10 years these Texas guitarists have spent as a team exploring the world bar by bar has been "research," what they've learned is how to please a crowd. The formula's simple: no-frills songs about women and working for a livin', set to meat-and-potatoes arrangements that leave plenty of room for their guitars to roam. Kubek's six-string snarls the loudest, hitting Albert Collins-style sustains and grinding out beefy chords. King skirts around the fringes with his sweet-toned, jazz-informed fills or works at groove-level, anchoring things with his basic, chopping, R&B-style chording. King's vocals are really his trump card. They're smooth and slinky when he's romancing in "Make It Right" or gravelly as Kubek's fluid guitar when he's a driven man in numbers like "Runnin' Blind." The album ends with the kind of guitar grand finale that sets a crowd on fire just after last call. The tune, "Standing in My Door," lets both six-stringers sting. Bnois King lays down a red carpet of sliding chords and Smokin' Joe struts through, doing his own dirty take on B.B. King's vibrato-laden style, bending notes and letting them sing. Then Bnois take the lead, his cleaner fretboard diction cutting even closer to B.B.'s lines before he returns to the microphone to sing the closing chorus. Fans of the Lone Star State's blues guitar tradition need to check these guys out. - amazon.com

V.A. - Chicago Blues: A Living History (2009)

"Chicago Blues: A Living History" is being hailed by music critics, musicians and music historians worldwide as the most important tribute of our time to the Chicago Blues. "Chicago Blues: A Living History" brings together two generations of Chicago's greatest living traditionalists. In an unprecedented Chicago Blues collaboration, the legendary Billy Boy Arnold, John Primer, Billy Branch and Lurrie Bell, inheritors of the Chicago Blues tradition--have come together to celebrate and pay tribute to the evolution of the genre from its earliest days through the present.

In April of 2009, these seminal artists released their landmark 2-disc CD. The 21 track, double-CD pays tribute to the genre's creators, its rich history, its current practitioners, and its singular place in the (r)evolution of 20th century American music. The group has united to give witness to the history of the genre in its most quintessential form as these extraordinary artists are the bridge between the originators of the genre and the Chicago Blues of today, through them the Chicago Blues remains a living tradition.

Originally released in 2000, A NEW DAY YESTERDAY marks the solo studio debut of blues singer/guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Only in his early 20s at the time of the album's recording, Bonamassa performs in a rough-and-tumble style that belies his relatively young age, as heard on both originals (the soulful "Current Situation") and a fine selection of covers (a fiery version of the Jethro Tull title track). Named after the early Jethro Tull classic, which he expertly covers here in a jaw-dropping performance, A New Day Yesterday is a fine debut by guitar ace Joe Bonamassa. And though his record company tried to ride the coattails of teenage guitar prodigies like Kenny Wayne Shepard and Jonny Lang and position him (misguidedly and much too late) as a straight-up prodigal blues kid, Bonamassa is really much more than a traditional bluesman. Rather, as best exemplified by the Jethro Tull number cited above, his bluesy take on Free's "Walk in My Shadows," or his hard boogie romp through Al Kooper's "Nuthin' I Wouldn't Do (For a Woman Like You)," this excellent debut places the guitarist's influences as much in classic '70s hard rock as in the blues. Along with his deceptively age-wearied vocals (he was only 22 at the time of this recording), this unusual combination translates into the aggressive, soulful crunch heard on Bonamassa's many original compositions. Among these, the jolting double whammy of "Miss You, Hate You" and "Colour and the Shape" (note the Anglicized spelling) are the most obvious standouts, but the guitarist also makes the Warren Haynes-penned "If Heartaches Were Nickels" his own with a tense, riveting performance. All in all, a promising debut. - cduniverse.com

VAN MORRISON - A Night In San Francisco (1994) [Remastered & Expanded Edition 2008]

Released in 1994, A Night In San Francisco was Van Morrison's third official live album and is an epic collection - two and half hours of amazing music that takes its cue from the traditional 'show-bands' – putting the focus on the band, led by the estimable Georgie Fame but also featuring singers James Hunter (now a critically-acclaimed solo performer), Brian Kennedy, saxophonist Candy Dulfer and blues legends John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells and Jimmy Witherspoon and also Morrison's daughter Shana!

Newly remastered sound and expanded packaging including lyrics of the Two CD set reissue of the 1994 album, recorded live A Night in San Francisco by Van Morrison. In contrast to these commercially-successful but not always critically acclaimed albums, the 1994 live double album, A Night in San Francisco was a "tour-de-force", clearly demonstrating Morrison's talents and his influences in equal measure and reached #8 on the UK charts. The Rolling Stone magazine review states the album stands as: "the culmination of a career's worth of soul-searching that finds Morrison's eyes turned toward heaven and his feet planted firmly on the ground."

PAT MEARS - There Goes The Rainbow (1991)

Pat Mears is a singer/songwriter, currently retired from the music business and living a quiet life in Lockhart, Texas. This website is offered in support of her music which is still a viable source of strength in her life. Pat Mears is a singer/songwriter, currently retired from the music business and living a quiet life in Lockhart, Texas. Pat Mears' career in music spanned 30 years, beginning in the small coffeehouses and bars in Boston, and ending on the bigger stages in Holland and Europe. Eventually, common traps in the music business stopped her performing: ineffective management, poor choices, and alcohol. As she explains ... Her first album, There Goes the Rainbow was a tour de force – it is one of those rare musical statements that is perfect and timeless. Each song follows the other naturally and with a tension in build-up that pulls the listener in, as the stories are told, as written and sung by Pat Mears, of human sorrow, and desire, and experience. "If I die tomorrow," Pat says, "at least I will know that I made this album." - patmears.com

GENE CLARK & CARLA OLSON - So Rebellious A Lover (1987) [Expanded 2003]

An exquisite pairing of talent, the duo of Carla Olson and Gene Clark apparently came out of casual living room sessions while Clark was preparing for another project. The feeling of spontaneity and closeness of spirit engulfs all of the cuts here. Olson's strident and powerful vocals mesh beautifully with Clark's slightly world-weary, soulful performances. As for the material, both songwriters obviously put their best foot forward here. Olson's "The Drifter" and "Are We Still Making Love" are excellent country-folk outings. Clark contributes one of his finest later compositions, "Gypsy Rider," a multi-leveled song that can easily be viewed as autobiographical. Excellent support is provided by an array of backing musicians, especially Stephen McCarthy (lap steel and dobro) and guest Chris Hillman (mandolin). Chemistry is the operative word here. The only sad thing is that So Rebellious a Lover was to be the only studio effort by the duo before Clark passed away in 1991. This record is important not only for what it is, but for what it could have become. - cduniverse.com

This is a wonderful duet album between ex-Byrd Gene Clark and ex-Textone Carla Olson. This was Clark's last studio recordings before his death in 1991. This one has been in and out of print over the years, but it's back now with five bonus tracks. This album was one of those magical projects with a balanced selection oforiginals and well chosen covers that are given new life by these two fine singers. The bonus tracks fit right in andmake for the ultimate version of this historical album. Don't let this one get away again.

CARLA OLSON & MICK TAYLOR - Too Hot For Snakes Plus (2008)

L.A. roots-rocker Olson and British blues-rock guitarist Taylor made a powerful pair. This live album, recorded at the Roxy in Los Angeles in 1990, was their debut, waxed with a hand-picked band that had rehearsed for a week and played only one warm-up gig. It's a sign of the players' quality that the group sounds like a well-oiled road unit, with Olson's powerful, earthy vocals backed by a solid rhythm section of Rick Hemmert on drums and Jesse Sublett on bass, and sparked throughout by Taylor's brilliant electric guitar. Released in 1991 under this title in the U.S. and as "Live" in Europe, this two-CD reissue adds a Taylor-sung cover of Fred McDowell's "You Gotta Move," previously released in Japan, and an entire second disc of studio tracks picked from Olson's subsequent collaborations with Taylor.

Recorded at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California in March of 1990, Too Hot for Snakes is an entertaining, if ultimately non-essential, addition to the catalogs of both artists; the clear highlight is a fiery rendition of the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers track "Sway," a song Taylor clearly relishes performing as much as Olson does. (Too Hot for Snakes is the U.S. release of the material released in Europe as Live).

ROBIN McKELLE - Mess Around (2010)

On her third album, the bold, sassy and sexy youing chanteuse Robin McKelle comes into her own. "Mess Around" marks a significant stylistic change for the irrepressible Ms. McKelle as she fully embraces her love for R&B, delivering a program that brings in the influences of Etta James, Ray Charles, and early Bette Midler to shape a driving horn-driven sound that sets off Robin's dynamic voice in a whole new way. To underscore this natural but fresh progression of direction, Robin enlists funk legend Fred Wesley as arranger of a couple of cuts: an unexpected take of the Bee Gees' "Lonely Nights" , "I Can't See Nobody" and Doc Pomus' blues evergreen "Lonely Avenue". McKelle is already well-known for her creative choices of cover tunes, bringing the contemporary songbook into jazz focus, and "Mess Around" doesn't disappoint in this respect. In addition to Pomus and the Brothers Gibb, Leonard Cohen, Willie Dixon and Lennon/McCartney all get selected tunes transformed into the new McKelle sound. Add in a vintage standard ("Cry me A River") and four originals of striking maturity, and you have an 11-track collection that rocks, rolls, flirts and seduces with maximum impact.

CURVED AIR - Midnight Wire (1975)

Curved Air are a pioneering British progressive rock group formed in 1970. The group evolved out of the band Sisyphus, and was named after the piece "A Rainbow in Curved Air" by contemporary composer Terry Riley. The musicians came from quite different artistic backgrounds, classic, folk, and electronic sound, which resulted in a mixture of progressive rock, folk rock, and fusion with classical elements. Along with High Tide, It's A Beautiful Day and East of Eden, Curved Air were one of the first bands after The Velvet Underground and It's a Beautiful Day to feature a violin.

"Midnight Wire" is the fifth studio album by Curved Air and was recorded in 1975. It marked another line-up change in the band, with Darryl Way and Sonja Kristina recruiting new musicians after the end of the re-union tour marked by the "Curved Air Live" album. Sonja's friend Norma Tager contributed the lyrics to many of the songs. - wikipedia

PERCY SLEDGE - My Old Friend The Blues (2009)

Pioneering soul man Percy Sledge returned in 2004 with Shining Through the Rain, his first new studio date since 1994's Grammy-nominated album, Blue Night. While nothing here is a surprise, Sledge's vocal range remains evident as he effortlessly veys his patented smooth, controlled passion. Generally, these 13 tracks are made up of country-soul ballads from the pens of Steve Earle, the Bee Gees, Barry Goldberg, Carla Olson, Jackie Lomax, and Mikael Rickfors. The two uptempo tunes, "24/7/365" and "Big Blue Diamonds," the latter a duet with Paul Jones, have a definite Stax/Volt vibe that nicely rounds out this fine contemporary deep soul outing. - cduniverse.com

MELODY GUY - Shoulda' Loved Me (2002)

Just for clarification, her name is Melody, her last name is Guy and she's one of the hottest talents on the Portland music scene today. Whether or not you're a fan of country music, Melody has the ability to breakdown anyone's dislike for the genre with her sugar-sweet voice that goes perfect with every skillfully crafted lyric she sings. Melody Guy's debut CD, titled Ready For Sunshine, is a wonderful representation of this gifted artist's ability to create emotionally charged lyrics so powerful that they reach in and seriously move you. Her abilities seem limitless as she exploits a voice with tremendous range, from pillow-soft ballads to foot stompin' blues that seem to virtually rip from her vocal chords. But Melody is most impressive in her live performances, which have landed her opening slots with artists including Sherrie Austin, Nanci Griffith, Jim Messina, Dan Seals, Joni Harms, Lee Ann Womak and Chad Brock. Although her stage presence is charming, to say the least, her songwriting reveals that her life has been less than perfect. This is one reason why Melody is so captivating - she's writing beautiful, honest songs and singing her heart out. "I think that's what makes listeners connect...my music is heartfelt. It comes from experience. I'm not making it up. It's about heartache, getting strong and moving on. I think people appreciate that it's real." - cduniverse.com

Mr. BIG - What If… (2011)

American hard rockers Mr. Big are back at it! Following a highly successful Japanese, European, and Southeast Asian tour in 2009 and a well-received live DVD release ‘Back To Budokan’, Mr. Big decided that they wanted to record an all-new studio album. The album, called ‘What If…’ was recorded in Sept. 2010 in Los Angeles. With ‘Caveman’ Kevin Shirley twirling the knobs, the album was recorded, mixed, 2 videos shot, and out the door in 4 weeks. Billy Sheehan stated that the album contains some “impossible guitar and bass stuff” and Kevin Shirley stated that it’s “mostly heavy.” With the original foursome (Paul Gilbert, Eric Martin, Billy Sheehan, Pat Torpey) back as friends, and writing carried out at a frenzied pace, this opus is set to deliver.

TRACKS:
01. Undertow 02. American Beauty 03. Stranger In My Life 04. Nobody Takes The Blame 05. Still Ain't Enough For Me 06. Once Upon A Time 07. As Far As I Can See 08. All The Way Up 09. I Won't Get In My Way 10. Around The World 11. I Get The Feeling 12. Unforgiven (bonus track)

GUTHRIE GOVAN - Erotic Cakes (2006)

Guthrie Govan is a guitarist known for his work with the bands Asia (2001–2006), GPS, The Young Punx and The Fellowship as well as Erotic Cakes (a vehicle for his own music). He is a noted guitar teacher through his work with the UK magazine Guitar Techniques, Guildford’s Academy of Contemporary Music and currently the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. He is also a former winner of Guitarist magazine's "Guitarist of the Year" competition.

Even though this is his first solo album, Guithrie Govan had been well known to small number since 1993 when he won the guitarist of the year award by Guitarist magazine (UK). He continued to work with the magazine to transcribe complex guitar pieces . He still teaches at some of the better known musical institutes throughout the UK. In all uniqueness. Guthrie manages to capture what many would usually consider to be two of the most essential ingredients for making a successful Guitar instrumental album. Firstly, A wide range of musical dynamics especially style and technique changes (shred, strum, slide, mood swings, flow etc.) and secondly, keeping the listener “involved” instead of them switching to the next song.

Highly recommended for every guitar fan.

LONNIE MACK - Strike Like Lightning (1985)

Anyone who thought Lonnie Mack was only a rock-guitar history book name-thanks to his seminal country-and-blues instrumental version of Chuck Berry's "Memphis"-got slapped upside the head by his 1958 Gibson Flying V guitar when this Stevie Ray Vaughan co-produced album appeared in 1985. On both fast and slow songs his fluid leads fulgurate like bolts from the blue, with additional illumination provided by his heavy, worn-and-torn singing voice. A gang of Mack's old Cincinnati cronies contribute glowingly as if at a roadhouse torching, while Vaughan supplies still more sizzle to the shuffle with "If You Have to Know" and four more.

Co-produced by Stevie Ray Vaughn, this was Lonnie's ticket back to the show after a few years on the sidelines. To say it was an inspired date would be putting it mildly. With his batteries recharged, Mack was in peak form, playing and singing better than ever. A major highlight is an inspired duet between Stevie and Lonnie on "Wham (Double Whammy)," going toe to toe for several exciting choruses.

TRACKS:
01. Hound Dog Man 02. Satisfy Suzie 03. Stop 04. Long Way from Memphis 05. Double Whammy 06. Strike Like Lightning 07. Falling Back in Love With You 08. If You Have to Know 09. You Ain't Got Me 10. Oreo Cookie Blues

DONAVON FRANKENREITER - Donavon Frankenreiter (2004)

Before launching a solo career as the protégé of Jack Johnson, Donavon Frankenreiter began his professional life as a surfer. Born in Southern California on December 10, 1972, he landed a sponsorship with Billabong as a young teenager and moved to Hawaii when he was 14. There, he rented a home from the parents of Jack Johnson, a fellow surfer with an untapped musical talent. The two became fast friends, learning guitar together and hanging out between trips to the beach. Music was always a hobby for Frankenreiter, who began playing guitar in a local rock band called Sunchild during his late teens, but it wasn't until 2002 that he grew confident enough to try a solo career. Meanwhile, Johnson's musical career had taken a meteoric leap, and he was starting his own Brushfire Records label. Frankenreiter reached out to his old friend, who released Frankenreiter's self-titled debut in May 2004. Johnson also made a guest appearance on the record, along with G. Love and Koool G Murder of the Eels. - allmusic.com

CINDY BULLENS - Live (2006) thumbup

This rock singer/songwriter sang three lead vocals on the movie soundtrack for Grease and sang backup with Elton John before cutting a series of albums of her own. After 1979's Steal the Night, Bullens did not return with new material for a decade, releasing a self-titled effort on MCA in 1989; another ten-year gap preceded the release of Somewhere Between Heaven & Earth, an album inspired by the tragic cancer-related death of the singer's 11-year-old daughter, Jessie. Bullens returned more quickly the next time around with 2001's Neverland. In 2005, Bullens released the tougher-sounding Dream #29. A year later, a live concert album appeared. In 2010, Bullens released her eighth-studio effort Howling Trains and Barking Dogs. - answers.com

DIRE STRAITS & MARK KNOPFLER - Private Investigations: The Best Of (2005)

With a deft, fingerpicking style that references bluegrass, jazz, blues, and rock, Knopfler's guitar playing sounds like no one else's. And his literate, evocative pop songs and understated, Dylan-esque vocal delivery are by no means run of the mill either. Nestled between his best-known tunes ("Sultans of Swing;" "Money for Nothing"), are gems like the grooving "Skateaway," the jazzy, minor-key "Your Latest Trick," and the instrumental "Going Home." While PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS is not comprehensive in terms of either the Dire Straits catalogue or its leader's solo output, it is an excellent sampler of Knopfler's talents. Since the 1970s Mark Knopfler has been carving out a niche for himself as a distinctive and much-admired songwriter and guitarist, first with his band Dire Straits and later as a solo artist. This 2-disc set collects many of the highlights from both phases of Knopfler's career.

For the first time, a compilation brings together the best of one of rock's most admired bands, Dire Straits, and the best of its leader, guitarist-singer-songwriter Mark Knopfler. Private Investigations: Best of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler, a double CD, spans their entire careers.

DISC 1:
01. Telegraph Road 02. Sultans Of Swing 03. Love Over Gold 04. Romeo & Juliet 05. Tunnel Of Love 06. Private Investigations 07. So Far Away 08. Money For Nothing 09. Brothers In Arms 10. Walk Of Life 11. Your Latest Trick

INGA RUMPF & FRIENDS - At Rockpalast (2007)

Inga Rumpf was one of the best-known German R&B singers. Her voice often drew comparisons to Janis Joplin, but Rumpf was able to develop her own unique vocal style. Catapulted to stardom in the ‘70s with her band Frumpy, she released a number of highly acclaimed solo works in the ‘80s and ‘90s and came to be regarded as the grand old lady of German R&B. Whereas other German female vocalists such as Nina Hagen faded away over time, Rumpf consequently followed her path and never compromised herself artistically (unlike her ex-bandmate Udo Lindenberg, whose creativity died down by the end of the ‘80s when he started putting out lightweight pop). She wrote pop history with the City Preachers folk group and the rock groups Frumpy and Atlantis. Her dark, smoky voice became her trademark and she is Germany's only world-class rock and soul singer (Rolling Stone):Inga Rumpf.

The singer and songwriter from Hamburg looks back on her 40 year career with a concert recorded in October 2006. A grandiose anniversary which she is celebrating at the one and only Rockpalast event with the theme: Back To The Roots. Inga Rumpf's musical roots lie in the gospel and soul music of American female singers.

JIMMY BUFFETT - License To Chill (2004)

Country music's infatuation with the puka-shell rock of Jimmy Buffett has been one of the genre's less fortunate indulgences. Most of Nashville's hat acts do little more than dip their toe in the water and do nothing to build upon Buffett's signature sounds. That's why License to Chill, which features a plethora of Music City guests (Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Clint Black, George Strait, Martina McBride, Toby Keith) along with Bill Withers and Nanci Griffith, seems like a bad idea. But the album, on which the Key West hedonist performs his favorite "bar gig" songs, as he calls them, often delights. As someone who began his songwriting career in Nashville (and who's also recorded more than half his albums there), Buffett isn't just slumming, as his choice of covers (from such writers as Guy Clark, John Hiatt, Hank Williams, and Jerry Garcia) proves. What could have been little more than a lark, then, ends up being a showcase for Buffett the serious songwriter and song finder. Although he does indulge in the occasional beach-minded thong-writing, Chill is a surprisingly satisfying album aimed less at the Parrothead crowd and more toward an audience who remembers the Buffett of 30 years ago, a man who strled to make his mark among Nashville's most revered tunesmiths.

Thankfully, back in print, License To Chill is the easy going singer/songwriter's 2004 album that took the music world by storm, landing on the #1 spot on Billboard's Top 200 and Country charts. This release, Buffett's first true Country album, features contributions from Country stars including Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Marina McBride, George Strait, Clint Black, and Nanci Griffith. - amazon.com

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS - The Legion Sessions (2010)

Great Lake Swimmers is a Canadian band built around the melodic folk rock songs of singer-songwriter Tony Dekker. Originally from Wainfleet, Ontario, the band is currently based in Toronto. Originally released in 2009 as an iTunes EP (and reissued several months later in conjunction with Record Store Day 2010), The Legion Sessions takes its setlist from a live performance at the Royal Canadian Legion Pub. At the time of its recording, Great Lake Swimmers had just put the finishing touches on Lost Channels, and they booked the Legion Pub to road-test the material in front of a small audience. The result is a “warts and all” album, at times more reminiscent of a bootleg than a polished concert recording, with moments of hesitation bumping their heads against inspired performances. The bandmates are obviously new to the material, and the songs sound a bit dry without Andy Magoffin’s reverb-heavy production. Even so, the wistful, panoramic appeal of Lost Channels comes through loud and clear on these tracks, particularly “Everything is Moving so Fast” and the heartrending “Still.” Only “River’s Edge” and “Unison Falling Into Harmony” are missing from the bunch, and those that do make the cut are rough around the edges in an earnest, organic way. The Legion Sessions may be imperfect, but it’s nice to hear the Swimmers get their sea legs in concert. ~ All Music Guide

JACK WILLIAMS - The High Road Home (2010)

Being able to draw on resources compiled over forty years of experience as a performing musician, it should come as no surprise that Jack Williams is one of the most talented and accomplished performers on the folk circuit today. What does come as something of a surprise is just how little recognition Williams gets for his mature blend of introspective genre-dyfing music. Tremendously gifted as a lyricist, guitarist, vocalist and arranger, Williams has played in a variety of settings and with an impressive cast of musicians, most notably Mickey Newbury and the late Harry Nilsson. Having performed in quite a few roles since 1959, from beatnik trumpeter and folk revivalist banjo/mandolin player to country-rock steel-guitar player and chamber music arranger, Williams is a fine enough guitarist to have found employment as guitarist for John Lee Hooker, Big Joe Turner, and Z.Z. Hill.

A collection of original songs featuring acoustic guitar, with help from some very accomplished back-up players, on a range of topics from homelessness, hurricane Katrina, the Florida wilderness and Alzheimer's to self discovery, forgiveness and recovery.

TRACKS:
01. The High Road Home 02. Bad Feeling 03. Hand Me Down 04. Pumphouse Blues 05. A Dangerous Thing 06. When You're Gone 07. While The Sun Goes Down 08. Sailing Away 09. Cavewoman Betty 10. Road Dog Blues #1 11. O, Chain Lightnin' 12. Song Of The 'Glades 13. Atlantis Goin' Down 14. No Longer Headed Nowhere 15. Invocation

MARIANNE FAITHFULL - Easy Come Easy Go - Deluxe Edition (2008)

EASY COME, EASY GO is Marianne Faithfull's second album with producer Hal Willner, coming over two decades after 1987's STRANGE WEATHER. Like its predecessor, this is a collection of covers of songs both old and new, but STRANGE WEATHER (like its 1980s predecessors BROKEN ENGLISH and DANGEROUS ACQUAINTANCES) was the sound of a singer still relatively new to sobriety after years as one of rock's most notorious addicts, with all the rough edges and hard-fought angst that implies. The far more elegant EASY COME, EASY GO finds a serene, 62-year-old Faithfull decades removed from her tortured depths, singing with an almost regal calm. Faithfull's guests include Nick Cave (on a duet of the Decemberists' "The Crane Wife 3"), Cat Power, Antony Hegarty, Rufus Wainwright, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle.

Deluxe two CD edition of her 2008 album, a collaboration with Hal Wilner, including a bonus CD that contains eight tracks. All the songs have been chosen by Marianne and Hal, and range from Billie Holiday's 'Solitude' to 'The Crane Wife' by current band The Decemberists. Other tracks include songs originally by Merle Haggard, Espers, Bessie Smith, Morrissey, Dolly Parton and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Easy Come, Easy Go also includes some interesting guest performances from Keith Richards, Antony Hegarty, Jarvis Cocker, Rufus Wainwright, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Warren Ellis, Nick Cave, Sean Lennon, Cat Power and Teddy Thompson. - cduniverse.com

DAMON FOWLER - Devil Got His Way (2011)

On "Devil Got His Way", Damon Fowler fulfills the tremendous potential that his acclaimed Blind Pig debut, "Sugar Shack", promised. His remarkable songwriting skills and vocal expressiveness are maturing, and his instrumental voice, by turns incendiary and deeply lyrical, is even stronger. The styles and moods of the songs on Devil Got His Way run the gamut. The brooding title cut tells a sordid tale, punctuated by furious slide guitar runs. "After The Rain" is a beautiful, meditative ballad. "Tight Rope" recalls the playful tone of Leon Russell's version, without sounding derivative. From the swampy nighttime heat of "Cypress In The Pines" to the wistful, R&B feel of "You Go Your Way" to the ironically rock anthemic "American Dream", Damon has the uncanny ability to make all the flavors of American rock'n'roll uniquely his own.

TRACKS:
01. We've Got A Good Thing 02. Devil Got His Way 03. After The Rain 04. Tight Rope 05. 28 Degrees 06. Fruit Stand Lady 07. Cypress In The Pines 08. Don't Call Me 09. Once In Awhile 10. You Go Your Way 11. American Dream 12. Happy Hour

LITTLE MISS HIGGINS - From the Great Northern Plains of Western Canada, Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way, guitar in hand, lips blazoned red, onto any stage. As if she just drove in off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind her, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk. Whether it’s songs about passion or songs about panties, she writes about real things in a rooted and poetic way. Her stage name, Little Miss Higgins suits the undeniably inflammatory mix of her blues and country music repertoire but the moniker was largely accidental. “When I moved to Saskatchewan in 2002 I started hanging out with this Greek guy,” she recalls “He started calling me Little Miss Higgins so I used it on poster for a gig I was doing and it just stuck.” Over the past five years, Little Miss Higgins has built a strong national reputation throughout Canada, appearing in clubs and on festival stages in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal, Owen Sound, and Canso, Nova Scotia performing most often as a duo with partner and guitar player, Foy Taylor.

2009 - Live
Little Miss Higgins - "Live: Two Nights In March" is the first “live” album from lead guitar player, singer and songwriter Little Miss Higgins. The album captures the vibrant energy of Little Miss Higgins’ live performance. Her partner in crime and guitar player, Foy Taylor, performs on both nights, including singing harmonies on a previously unreleased song, “Snowin’ Today: A Lament for Louis Riel”. - littlemisshiggins.com
TRACKS:
01. The Dirty Ol Tractor Song 02. Intro to Velvet Barley Bed 03. Velvet Barley Bed 04. In the Middle of Nowhere 05. Slug on my Boot 06. Snowin' Today: A Lament for Louis Riel 07. Broadcast Boogie 08. I'm Gonna Bake My Biscuits 09. How and Why and When 10. The Story of the Long Creek 11. Radville 12. Killer Diller 13. The Silvertone Swing 14. Romance in the Dark 15. Broadcast Boogie (reprise)

2010 - Across The Plains
The creation of this album was for me an adventure of some paths previously untraveled: recording to tape, using vintage mics, and co-producing. Those who jumped on board, my partner Foy Taylor, co-producer Jaxon Haldane and the brilliant bunch of prairie-based musicians made the journey easier. Everyone involved kept the creative fires burning that wintry month of recording. This album ties together the experience gained from recording two studio albums and a live CD, along with my intuition and creativity, to bring to life what I have always envisioned. The 10 original songs are influenced by life. Some are shaped by stories and sounds of another time. Others stem from being in the moment, finding passion in the “now” as in writing about a plum tree or le soleil or Bargain! Shop panties; finding a balance in the old and the new, the past and the present, learning and moving on, letting go and holding strong. - littlemisshiggins.com
TRACKS:

ARETHA FRANKLIN - Rare & Unreleased Recordings From The Golden Reign Of The Queen Of Soul (2007)

Nearly every music legend leaves behind a slew of unreleased songs, alternate takes of released tunes, and live and demo material. To collectors, such detritus from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and others is manna from heaven. Aretha Franklin's first six years with Atlantic Records generated its own sheaf of unreleased songs and rarities, lovingly compiled into a chronological two-CD collection. Raw 1966 demos of her first Atlantic hit "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" and "Dr. Feelgood" from her debut album open the gates to an embarrassment of riches from 1967 to 1973, most eventually recorded for other albums. The explosive, gospel-flavored "The Letter" and "It Was You," recorded during the Aretha Arrives sessions, are masterpieces, as is her extraordinary spin on the Beatles' "The Fool on the Hill," given to Franklin by Paul McCartney and released on Magical Mystery Tour only after her version never appeared. Her soulful take on "My Cup Runneth Over" renders Ed Ames's syrupy '60s-pop version irrelevant and it's difficult to see why the down-and-dirty blues "Do You Know" from her Other Side of the Sky sessions never appeared. A live duet with Ray Charles on Duke Ellington's "Ain't But the One" from a 1973 Ellington salute on CBS is followed by an eloquent takes on Etta James's hit "At Last" and Nat King Cole's "Love Letters." With knowing, poignant reminiscences from Atlantic's legendary Jerry Wexler, Franklin's producer during these years, it's an overdue, eminently fulfilling journey beyond her classics. - amazon.com

BOB DYLAN - MTV Unpled (1995)

Unpled albums are frequently corny, but this was an important artistic move for Dylan in 1995, when many fans had given up on his incomprehensible singing and lackluster concerts. With sympathetic backup musicians, including organist Brendan O'Brien and guitarist John Jackson, Dylan returns the coherence to his originals ("All Along the Watchtower," "The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Desolation Row," "Like a Rolling Stone") and rearranges them just enough to freshen their sound. The previously unreleased "Dignity" is one of Dylan's best songs this decade, and it fits nicely with the rickety versions of "John Brown" and the finale, "With God On Our Side."

MTV UNPLUGGED was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" was nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, and "Dignity" was nominated for Best Rock Song.

TRACKS:
01. Tombstone Blues 02. Shooting Star 03. All Along The Watchtower 04. The Times They Are A-Changin' 05. John Brown 06. Desolation Row 07. Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35 08. Love Minus Zero / No Limit 09. Dignity 10. Knockin' On Heaven's Door 11. Like A Rolling Stone 12. With God On Our Side
