JOAN ARMATRADING - Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Joan Armatrading's rich voice, with its island lilt, is a most expressive instrument. Armatrading made her mark with her self-titled 1976 album, which featured everything from light-hearted, literate love songs to intimate confessions of near-religious beauty. The talent she displayed on that record ensured that Ms. Armatrading would have a busy career as a recording artist. In the '80s she explored a wide spectrum of styles that ranged from acoustic to straight-ahead rock. In the '90s, a new generation of independent female artists have acknowledged a debt to Ms. Armatrading by covering her songs.

For her 2010 "This Charming Life" tour, Joan was joined on stage by John Giblin on bass, Gary Foote, drums & sax and Spencer Cozens on Keyboards. This "sell out", Royal Albert Hall, performance is as it was on the evening of the recording in April 2010. There are no overdubs or additions whatsoever.

DISC 1:
01. Show Some Emotion 02. Something's Gotta Blow 03. All the Way from America 04. Two Tears 05. Cry 06. Promises 07. Into the Blues 08. A Woman in Love 09. Love Love Love 10. Love and Affection

DISC 2: 01. Tall in the Saddle 02. My Baby's Gone 03. This Charming Life 04. The Weakness in Me 05. Best Dress On 06. Heading Back to New York City 07. You Rope You Tie Me 08. Call Me Names 09. Me, Myself I 10. Willow 11. Drop the Pilot

BETTYE LaVETTE - I've Got My Own Hell To Raise (2005)

With one eye on the intimate concept albums Sinatra invented at mid-'50s Capitol, and the other on the gritty yet sophisticated soul records produced at Atlantic in the '60s, this release offers ten songs that tell the story of Bettye LaVette. Recording stints at Motown, Atlantic, Epic, and a host of smaller labels left her with dreams to burn, and she pours every moment of hope and heartbreak from her 40+ years in music into her tough-minded new collection. Choosing only songs written by female artists, she spins the tale of a woman in a world where men make the choices. For every moment of fear and loss, there's an answering moment of triumph and defiance. The songs are from such artists as Sinead O'Connor, Lucinda Williams, Joan Armatrading, Rosanne Cash, Dolly Parton, Aimee Mann, and more. - amazon.com

EVA CASSIDY - Live At Blues Alley (1997) thumbup

When Eva Cassidy is swinging her way through "Cheek to Cheek" and getting down and bluesy on "Stormy Monday" on this live set from 1996, it's nigh impossible not to get swept up in her voice's vast, barreling force. Her full range, though, becomes most obvious, and soul-shaking, on the slower side, as with Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Water," Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Tall Trees in Georgia," and "What a Wonderful World." On these latter tunes, Cassidy's mix of aching clarity and rich warmth has a melting quality, speaking through the body to some evanescent presence that she seems to know all too well. She improbably makes Sting's "Fields of Gold" an emotional powerhouse just as easily as she makes Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow" an offhand declaration of feeling equal to nearly anything in the jazz vocal canon. In doing so she earns her place among the great singers, artists who could take any song and stamp it indelibly as their own. What Eva Cassidy had in her short life was an unbelievably perfect voice and a musical soul that grasped gospel, folk, blues, jazz, and all points in between as if they were mere stops on a single train ride. Alas, her ride ended in 1996, tragically early. - music-city.org

01. Cheek to Cheek 02. Stormy Monday 03. Bridge over Troubled Water 04. Fine and Mellow 05. People Get Ready 06. Blue Skies 07. Tall Trees in Georgia 08. Fields of Gold 09. Autumn Leaves 10. Honeysuckle Rose 11. Take Me to the River 12. What a Wonderful World 13. Oh, Had I a Golden Thread

THE DOORS - Live In Hollywood 1969 (2002) thumbup

With such a plethora of live releases issued over the years (and quite a few with less than satisfactory sound quality), whenever a vintage Doors performance gets the CD treatment, it's understandable for fans to be skeptical. But 2002's Live in Hollywood is one that gets it right. Although not a complete performance from beginning to end, Live in Hollywood plucks highlights from several performances at the Aquarius Theatre in 1969. According to legend, depending on which night you witnessed a performance by Jim Morrison, you either got the Lizard King in all his glory, or a clearly out-of-it gentleman in danger of inciting a riot or getting arrested. These performances were certainly when Morrison and his bandmates were "on," as the group sounds simply fantastic -- offering more than enough evidence as to why the Doors are often considered one of the most mesmerizing live acts of the '60s. Most of the group's favorites up to 1969 are featured here, including fine readings of such classics as "Break on Through," "Touch Me," "Five to One," and "Light My Fire," as well as an embryonic instrumental version of "Peace Frog." - All Music Guide

TRACKS:
01. Welcome 02. Back Door Man 03. Break On Through 04. When The Music's Over 05. You Make Me Real 06. Universal Mind 07. Touch Me 08. Soul Kitchen 09. Jim Introduces Ray 10. Close To You 11. What You'd Like To Hear? 12. Peace Frog (Instrumental) 13. Blue Sunday 14. Five To One 15. Celebration 16. Light My Fire

CACTUS - Fully Unleashed: The Live Gigs 1 & 2 thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Cactus is an American hard rock supergroup formed in 1970. Cactus was initially conceived as early as late 1969 by the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section of bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice with guitarist Jeff Beck and singer Rod Stewart (also from the already dissolved Jeff Beck Group). However, Beck had an automobile accident and was out of the music scene for over a year and Stewart joined Ronnie Wood in Faces. Early 1970 Appice and Bogert brought in blues guitarist Jim McCarty from Mitch Ryder's Detroit Wheels and The Buddy Miles Express, and singer Rusty Day (born Russell Edward Davidson) from Amboy Dukes. This line-up managed three albums (Cactus, One Way...Or Another and Restrictions) before intraband troubles led to McCarty quitting at the end of 1971. Shortly afterwards Day was fired from the group. The fourth and last Cactus album ('Ot 'N' Sweaty) featured original rhythm section Bogert and Appice joined by Werner Fritzschings on guitar, Duane Hitchings on keyboards and Peter French (ex-Leaf Hound and Atomic Rooster) on vocals.

1972 - Fully Unleashed: The Live Gigs
Fully Unleashed: The Live Gigs is a mind blowing album! This is a dual disc album with the first disc and the first half of the second disc being Cactus' final performance (with original members) in Memphis, Tennessee, 1971. The latter half of the second disc contains some odds and ends from other performances (Live at Gilligans and Mar Y Sol). The Gilligan's (Buffalo NY, 1971) and Isle of Wight tracks feature original members. The Mar Y Sol (Puerto Rico, 1972) selections only have the original rhythm section which makes those tracks suffer. Cactus has a unique sound that I haven't heard from any other artists. Each member goes balls to the wall (which is usually a bad thing) all the while keeping the grooving tight and flowing. Carmine Appice (drums) and Tim Bogert (bass/vocals) make a crazy rhythm section while Jim McCarty holds his own on guitar. Rusty Day takes the cake with his 'rusty' vocals. One thing that makes this album so incredible is how superb the sound quality is. If you crank this album up to the max, it will sound as if Cactus is playing right in front of you. Sometimes I think my speakers will burst spontaneously combust from the sheer power of their performance. - ultimate-guitar.com
DISC 1:
01. Intro - Long Tall Sally 02. Bag Drag 03. Evil 04. Parchman Farm 05. Alaska 06. Oleo 07. No Need To Worry 08. Let Me Swim

2007 - Fully Unleashed: The Live Gigs, Vol. II
Considering that the original Cactus lineup only released three studio albums, none of which made much of a dent on the popular consciousness when they were released in the early '70s, there seems to be undue interest in the group's leftovers. This is the third double-disc set within three years from Rhino Handmade on the thudding blues rockers, all of them impressive sellers with the previous volume of live gigs selling out its limited-edition run. While Vol.1 collected performances from the band's early career (including a track from this set), Vol.2 reproduces a single two-hour performance from Cactus' Buffalo appearance on June 26, 1971. Originally recorded by noted engineer Eddie Kramer, the sound faithfully captures Jim McCarty's slashing guitar and Carmine Appice's thumping drums in a concert setting that highlights the band's strengths and weaknesses. Joined on this date by second guitarist Ron Leejack, who had just joined the existing four-piece but didn't last long in the lineup, the sound is fuller, louder and a bit more raucous than Cactus' usual three-piece plus vocal attack. Never the subtlest of acts, the recently expanded five-piece stretches out here, for better or worse, on nearly every track, often pushing the tunes into the excess that the group seemed to thrive on. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - Apple Records Extra: Badfinger, Mary Hopkin, Jackie Lomax [Expanded Edition] (2010)

This set contains an expanded version of the 2-CD set that was included in the Apple Records Box Set released last month. For those who aren’t aware of just what those CDs were about, allow me to give a brief overview. Not an overview of The Beatles Apple Records (which, hopefully, you already know about), but an overview of the scope of the 2-CD and what I have done with them. On October 26th, the Apple Records Box was released, containing 17 CDs. Thirteen of the CDs were of 15 original alums released between 1969-1973 on Apple Records. Two of the CDs were “two-fers”, containing two LPs on one CD. The artists on this box were Badfinger (4 CDs), Mary Hopkin (2 CDs), Billy Preston (2 CDs), Jackie Lomax, The Radha Krishna Temple, James Taylor, Doris Troy, The Modern Jazz Quartet and John Taverner (each with one CD, with the last two artists being the ones with two LPs on their CD). Every CD, with the exception of the John Taverner CD, had bonus tracks. When the set was first announced, ADDITIONAL bonus tracks were mentioned for those who would purchase the albums as digital downloads. This news upset more than a few folks, so it was a relief when it was revealed that all of those bonus tracks would be collected on a 2-CD set that would be a bonus in the box set of all the albums plus the new ‘Come And Get It’ compilation, which gathered up many Apple releases that were never found on an album. The 2-CDs, while very nice, certainly smacked of a missed opportunity as there was almost an hour of unused space over the two CDs. Especially with regards to Mary Hopkin, who had several single-only tracks that were not to be found at all on the box. In addition, it was revealed that there were a few tracks that were on the original 1991-1992 Apple CDs that had not been included at all on the box. We here at Voo-Doo Records sought to address this issue by adding appropriate tracks to each CD. A simple task, but one that needed to be done because otherwise the bonus CDs would have the same “missed opportunity” feel to them as the Lennon Signature Box bonus discs had. Now, they feel complete

CAMEL - Rainbow's End: An Anthology 1973-1985 (2010)

Camel are an English progressive rock band formed in 1971. An important group in the Canterbury scene, they have been releasing studio and live recordings steadily, with considerable success, since their formation.

"Rainbow's End" is a newly remastered exhaustive 4CD anthology featuring key album tracks from 'Camel', 'Mirage', 'The Snow Goose', 'Moonmadness', 'Rain Dances', 'Breathless', 'I Can See Your House From Here' and 'Nude', plus rare studio and live recordings made for Decca Records and the BBC. Housed in a hard-back book package, the lavish booklet contains previously unseen photographs, memorabilia and essay by Mark Powell. One of Decca's later signings during the first 'progressive' age which began in the late sixties, Camel would prove to be one of the label's most commercially successful bands and one of the most enduring. Unlike many of their contemporaries, Camel have survived over three decades in the music business and still command a loyal and devoted following throughout the world, both in concert and on record. This 4-disc set, is the most comprehensive overview of the group's career, focussing on Camel's long association with Decca which yielded the group's best loved and most significant work

NINA SIMONE - The Essential Nina Simone (2000)

Eunice Kathleen Waymon's beautiful, mellifluous voice is one of the most distinctive and celebrated in music. As Nina Simone she recorded over forty albums during a long and distinguished career that stretched over five decades. She was born in 1933 and, as a child, was a talented pianist. A fund was set up for her continued education and this enabled her to go to Juilliard School of Music in New York. She took a job singing and playing piano to supplement her funding and adopted the name Nina Simone at this time. As a result of this job she finally recorded her first album, the successful Little Girl Blue in 1950. Many further albums followed, with Simone retaining full artistic control as singer, songwriter and arranger. This control allowed her to incorporate themes into her music which were gaining prominence in her own ethos at the time, particularly civil rights. She was described variously as a jazz singer, a soul singer, and a folk singer - really she was all of these and more. Her heartfelt songs remain in the public consciousness to this day, having been made famous by both her and by those who re-recorded them. Her numerous albums and wonderful concerts are a marvelous testament to her passion and power. She has inspired many legendary artists including Jeff Buckley, Aretha Franklin and The Animals; artists who have, in turn, inspired further generations. She died, aged 70, in 2003, after a long battle with cancer. - amazon.com

VALERIE WELLINGTON - Million Dollar Secret (1984)

Opera diva, actress, blues belter, Valerie Wellington tackled all three roles successfully while still in her 20s. After three years of studying the classics at the American Conservatory of Music, Valerie burst onto the Chicago blues scene, unleashing her roof-raising pipes on the blues scene in the summer of 1982 and snaring the role of Ma Rainey in a local stage play. Her rise was nothing short of meteoric, boosted by her 1984 Rooster debut album, “Million Dollar Secret.” A pair of very popular television commercials for the Chicago Tribune, aired on national superstation WGN-TV, plus a concert broadcast on National Public Radio, introduced this powerhouse singer to a nationwide audience. Wellington’s full-bodied sound combined the influence of contemporary singers like Ray Charles and Koko Taylor with the classic styles of Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. In fact, she was one of the few younger blues women to regularly feature songs from the 1920s in her dynamic live show.

Valerie showed the promise of becoming a true blues superstar, but the blues world was sadly robbed of her talent when she died of a brain aneurysm at the age of 33, in 1993.

JOOLS HOLLAND, HIS RHYTHM & BLUES ORCHESTRA AND FRIENDS - Small World Big Band (2001)

Although this is nominally credited to Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, really this is a 22-track various-artists compilation with Holland's ensemble serving as the house band. The lineup of old and new, superstar and cult talent is impressive, even if many of them are past their prime: Sting, John Cale, Stevie Winwood, Taj Mahal, Jamiroquai, Paul Weller, Joe Strummer, Dr. John, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Van Morrison, Paul Carrack, and Eric Clapton are some of the artists given a track. Holland has described his music as big band blues, and that's an apt description for a good deal of the songs, whether it's Sting's "Seventh Son," Taj Mahal's "Outskirts of Town," or Morrison's "Back o' Town Blues." Actually, though, some of this is soul, AOR rock, or ska. That doesn't necessarily count as a strike against the record, it just makes the groove less consistent. There is a consistent, hepped-up party mood, though one that's unrelenting yet slick enough so that it's rather like a party that tries too hard to succeed and goes on too long. Certainly it will attract the most attention for George Harrison's "Horse to the Water," his last recording (done shortly before his death in late 2001). Harrison was a great musician, but this is not a great or good track; the song isn't much, and his voice, unfortunately, sounds like it's in faltering shape. For the most part it's amiable and unmemorable, hitting its finest note on Steve Winwood's "I'm Ready," in which he (or someone, the part is not detailed in the credits) rips out some organ work straight from the spirit of his Spencer Davis Group days. The ska cuts by S and Jamiroquai actually make for a nice change of pace from the grand blues strutting. There are also some missteps that might have been better left uncontributed, like Paul Weller's cover of Billy Preston's "Will It Go Round in Circles" and Stereophonics' version of the Beatles' "Revolution." - cduniverse.com

TONY JOE WHITE - That On The Road Look 'Live' (2010)

Before his song "Polk Salad Annie" went Top 10 in 1969, Tony Joe White learned to how to put on a good show as a survival skill while paying his dues in some of Texas and Louisiana's roughest honky-tonks. His hit led to a U.S. tour where unsuspecting audiences were mesmerized by the guitarist's fiery performances and his frenzied command of the whomper stomper (aka wah-wah pedal). Rhino Handmade preserves an unreleased 1971 live album from the self-styled Swamp Fox with THAT ON THE ROAD LOOK. The album's 12 unreleased performances find White locked in watertight with his longtime drummer Sammy Creason and keyboardist Michael Utley along with legendary bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn. Thought to be a rumor for the longest time, not much is known about this unreleased treasure, including the exact location where it was recorded. One thing is certain, the boys rip the roof off of wherever they are for more than an hour, mixing cuts from White's 1971 Warner Bros. debut - "A Night In The Life Of A Swamp Fox" and "Traveling Bone" - with his earlier recordings for Monument Records - "Roosevelt And Ira Lee" and a 10-minute rave-up of "Polk Salad Annie." THAT ON THE ROAD LOOK also spotlights White's uncanny ability to make every song his own with a cover of T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday." - amazon.com

THE MANNISH BOYS - Big Plans (2007)

The second studio album by contemporary electric blues supergroup the Mannish Boys delivers straightforward Chicago-style blues in an unfussy setting. The list of special guests is as long as the nine-piece band, including guest singers Jody Williams and Bobby Lee Jones, guitarist Rick Holmstrom, pianist Rob Rio, bassists Jeff Big Dad Turmes and Larry "The Mole" Taylor, harmonica player Mitch Kashmar and saxophonist David Woodford. As a result, no one singer or instrumentalist predominates, giving Big Plans a sort of R&B revue feel. The songs are mostly originals by members of the band including bandleader Randy Chortkoff and slide guitarist Frank Goldwasser; while the band get points for largely avoiding the temptation to simply bash out the usual electric blues suspects, none of the album's original material sounds likely to join the blues canon. A fairly low-key, genial album, Big Plans is considerably less than its title sests, but it's likely enough for fans of contemporary electric blues. - cduniverse.com

JACK CASIDY - Dream Factor (2003)

Founding member of the Jefferson Airplane and longtime mainstay of Hot Tuna, Jack Casady was one of the first rock bass players to explore the full melodic potential of his instrument. But on this, his first solo album after four decades in the trenches, the veteran musician showcases a more subtle skill, his peerless ability to bolster any musical framework he's involved with. With guests ranging from old band mates (Jorma Kaukonen adds his distinctive acoustic and electric lead guitar work to "Listen to the Wind" and "Sweden," respectively) to Little Feat's Paul Barrere (whose vocals and emblematic slide guitar light up the buoyant opener, "Paradise," and two others) Ivan Neville (the soulful vocals and B3 of "Trust Somebody") and the Tubes' Fee Waybill (who collaborates/sings on the anti-travelogue, "Sweden") Casady strives more for a sense of musical family than adventurous turns in the spotlight. Save for the rumbling bass cascades and playful noises of the instrumental "Outside," Casady hews to largely familiar forms here, occasionally switching over to acoustic guitar for his various collaborations with Box Set's Jim Brunberg and Jeff Pehrson (and especially the evocative country of "By Your Side") that form the album's core tracks. - amazon.com

JIMI HENDRIX - West Coast Seattle Boy: The Jimi Hendrix Anthology (2010)

This collection presents, for the first time, the most sought after of Jimi’s pre-Experience recordings as a sideman for such rhythm & blues stars as The Isley Brothers, Don Covay, Little Richard and others. All of the misinformation and fake purported to feature Hendrix are swept aside for fans. The remaining three discs feature previously unreleased and commercially unavailable studio recordings from every chapter of his career and live recordings with the Experience and Band Of Gypsys spanning 1967 through 1970. The studio recordings include never before released (or even bootlegged) alternate versions of such classic fare as “Are You Experienced,” “Fire,” “May This Be Love,” “Love Or Confusion” and many more. In addition, new songs such as “Hear My Freedom,” “Hound Dog Blues” and “Lonely Avenue” make their debut as part of this special collection. To provide further insight and understanding into Hendrix’s creative development, WCSB presents acoustic and electric home recordings of Electric Ladyland signature songs such as “Long Hot Summer Night,” “1983 (A Merman I Shall Turn To Be),” as well as “My Friend” and “Angel” later featured as part of First Rays Of The New Rising Sun. WCSB also features another major revelation, an electric demo version of Bob Dylan’s “Tears Of Rage.” WCSB also features a previously unreleased version of “Everlasting First,” Jimi’s 1970 celebrated collaboration with Arthur Lee & Love, an unheard 1967 studio session with Traffic’s Dave Mason as well as an expanded presentation of Jimi’s legendary session with jazz organist Larry Young. Four hours of rare and previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix.

V.A. - Coal Miner's Daughter - A Tribute to Loretta Lynn (2010)

A star-studded lineup of artists signed on to celebrate on this tribute album the enduring music Loretta Lynn has produced over her 50-year career. Gretchen Wilson delivers a spitfire vocal on “Don’t Come Home A’Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)” closely mimicking Loretta’s phrasing at times, while Lee Ann Womack’s version of “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl” is superb. Loretta herself appears along with Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert on the classic “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” in a version that hews closely to the original. Pairing “Undo It” singer Carrie Underwood with the tune “You’re Looking at Country” may disgruntle some country music purists, but her vocal is spot-on, even if the song’s sentiment is a stretch. Alan Jackson’s performance on his duet with Martina McBride on a stunning rendition of “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” recalls the tune’s original male lead, Conway Twitty. On “You Ain’t Woman Enough (to Take My Man)” and “Rated X,” rockers Paramore and the White Stripes, respectively, prove that Loretta’s influence extends outside country music. This disc highlights a collection of substantial songs every bit as relevant today as they were in Loretta’s heyday.

02. I'm A Honky Tonk Girl - Lee Ann Womack

Full Descriptioninto an Ingmar Bergman movie. She's back, defiant but wiser, with a terrific blues album that has divas Bonnie Raitt and Marcia Ball testifying that she's the real thing. MIKI HONEYCUTT - Soul Deep (1989) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Miki Honeycutt has the kind of earnest affectation and genuinely raw sound that comes only from the heart. She sings Southern soul and surging blues on this release with the timing and intensity of a veteran, although she's a relative newcomer. It helps that she's backed by Sugar Ray And The Blue Tones, plus a host of fine guests including guitarist Duke Robillard and producer/keyboardist Ron Levy. But it's up to Honeycutt to make such numbers as "Not By Man Alone," "Teardrops" and "Somebody Special" something more than laboratory exercises. It's only on the covers, particularly her rendition of Irma Thomas' "Breakaway," where problems arise. But Honeycutt perseveres, showing the ability to sing soulful material with integrity and personalized flair. - answers.com

ROBERT RANDOLPH & THE FAMILY BAND - We Walk This Road (2010) thumbup

Produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, 'We Walk This Road' continues the Sacred Steel tradition for which Robert Randolph has earned wide praise, including the New York Times, which applauds 'his rip-roaring virtuosity and his gift for making his instrument sing without a word.' Throughout the recording of 'We Walk This Road,' Randolph and Burnett worked closely together as archivists, discovering songs-decade by decade-from the 20th century American music canon. The songs they uncovered, ranging from blues and rock to field recordings and gospel, serve as the inspiration for the 11 songs on 'We Walk This Road.' Recorded at the Village Recorders and Electro Magnetic Studio, the album includes 'If I Had My Way' (featuring Ben Harper), 'Salvation' (featuring Leon Russell), and reinterpretations of Prince's 'Walk Don't Walk,' Bob Dylan's 'Shot Of Love,' (featuring Jim Keltner, who played drums on the original version) and John Lennon's 'I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier Mama' (featuring Doyle Bramhall II). Of the album, Randolph says 'T Bone and I drew a lot from the past while we were making this record, but I think it really is a record for these times. I think the fact that I, as a young guy who likes hip-hop and gospel, am reaching back into this rich history of American roots music will appeal to people who are fifteen, and people who are seventy-five years old. T Bone opened my eyes to great archival music. He's a link between the past and the present.' - amazon.com

ROBERT RANDOLPH & THE FAMILY BAND - Live At The Wetlands (2002) thumbup

This album's all about the blazing virtuosity of Robert Randolph. The pop-music arrival of the young pedal-steel guitarist from the Pentecostal church was shepherded last year by the North Mississippi Allstars and groove organist John Medeski in a brilliant album and group called The Word. With his own Family Band and just one spiritual, the lovely "Pressing My Way," on the set list, Randolph sends lightning bolts through the audience in this August 2001 recording at a now-shuttered Manhattan club. He blends the showmanship of his blues inspiration, Stevie Ray Vaughan, with his own unique instrumental mastery, transforming his steel guitar into something more like a lead vocalist. Randolph constantly makes his 13-string guitar play call-and-response with his own singing, and he breathes fire into Slim Harpo's chestnut "Shake Your Hips" by making it a field day for his stabbing splashes of notes and chords, inventing a different melody for his long solos that's more western swing than swamp blues. Although the shout-and-stomp-along original, "I Don't Know What You Come to Do," raises the crowd, it's the 11-minute finale, "Tears of Joy," that is Randolph's showstopper. The tune's a crafty summation of all his gifts: slow, sliding, rich-toned notes and low-buzzing chords; rhythms that pull from the stately qualities of gospel (enhanced by the way Randolph's steel blends with John Ginty's Hammond organ) and the pure exhilaration of rock improvisation; and beautiful tones that echo from honky-tonk to Hendrix. It's the musical equivalent of a white-water thrill ride.

Robert Randolph is one of the most talented pedal steel guitarists of his generation, picking up comparisons to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix. Live At The Wetlands is the debut from Randolph and The Family Band.

THE WAIFS - A Brief History... (2004) thumbup

Although known for years as one of Australia's best folk-pop bands around, the Waifs slowly but surely made inroads in North America with albums such as Sink or Swim and Up All Night. This two-disc collection of live performances, A Brief History, shows the band at the top of their game while liberally choosing tracks from all their albums. Kicking things off is the swinging, jazzy crowd pleaser "Lighthouse" that is hard not to replay often. This swinging nature is revisited with Josh Cunningham sharing vocals on "Love Serenade." Recorded throughout Australia over a period of three years, the group veers from pop to folk to Americana easily with the strong "London Still" featuring harmonies from sisters Vikki Simpson and Donna Simpson. Yet the pop element is still present for the bouncy, roots-riddled "Take It In" that has the audience singing along. The same can be said for the toe-tapping and engaging "Lies." Knowing a melody or hook, gems such as "The Waitress," with its concluding Mexican flair, shine instantly. The alt country or rootsy nature the band has moved towards in later albums is quite audible in the somewhat bluesy folk of "Fisherman's Daughter," which brings to mind Lucinda Williams while "Crazy Train" has an excellent harmonica solo early on. The Waifs slow things down somewhat for "Haircut," which is a pretty yet dark ballad, while "Gillian" is a gentle, warm, folksy tale. Perhaps the biggest asset is how the two discs are equally, consistently strong, whether it is the sultry, sexy "Willow Tree" or the mid-tempo, breezy "When I Die" that shows off the sisters' great harmonies. Perhaps the best of the lot comes through during the tender, retrospective "Sunflower Man" and also the hushed, whispered "Spotlight." And the Americana nature of this Aussie group comes through predominantly on disc two, especially with "Highway One" and the live version of "Bridal Train" (a studio version is also included). The home stretch is of the slower, singer/songwriter style, particularly during "Here If You Want," even with Cunningham's cell phone ringing near its conclusion. The only poppy tunes are "Company" and "Shelter Me" that falls in line with songs on the first disc. Regardless, it's a fantastic collection from a band with what will hopefully become a much longer history. - cduniverse.com

SNOWY WHITE BLUES PROJECT - In Our Time...Live (2010)

Snowy White is an English guitarist, known for having played with Thin Lizzy (permanent member from 1979 to 1981) and with Pink Floyd (as a back-up player; he was first invited to tour with the band through Europe and the United States, in 1977, and during The Wall shows in 1980) and, more recently, for Roger Waters' band. "In Our Time - Live", captures the band at full power on the twelfth of a fourteen date European tour at one of their favourite venues, De Boerderij (The Farm), Zoetermeer, Holland, in February 2010, to a packed house of music lovers, many of whom had been curious to check out Snowys new band at the same venue the previous May, then returned in February as whole-hearted fans. The dynamic set list is heavy with original songs from the studio album but also includes several gems from Snowys earlier career, including Peter Greens Long Grey Mare and World Keep on Turning, a new arrangement of Snowys own Land of Plenty, and an acoustic section, with Matt Taylor getting a lot of help from the audience on Sonny Terry & Brownie McGees Walk On, plus Freddie Kings classic Woman Across the River, which sees Snowy and Matt guitar duelling, Gibson versus Fender, almost to the death!

THE WAIFS - sundirtwater (2007)

The Waifs are probably one of the most decorated folk/roots rock bands that you’ve never heard of. Coming out of west Australia, the band is made of sisters Vikki Thorn (harmonica, guitar, vocals) and Donna Simpson, and they are joined by Josh Cunningham (guitar, vocals). Originally performing Bob Dylan covers in and around bars in their native Australia, the sister duo of Vicki and Donna Simpson were known as COLOURS. Formed in 1992 and touring constantly in their homeland, the pair hooked up with Josh Cunningham during a stop in August 1992. A year later, they changed their name to the WAiFS. From there, the group released a cassette of original material but decided to head for Melbourne, the mecca of Australian music. A loyal following and hectic touring pace resulted in three albums, the self-titled debut in May 1996 and 1998's "Shelter Me." Folk festivals across the United States and Canada also fell in love with their sweet harmonies and self-described "wholemeal" music. They have also shared the stage with such artists as Kasey Chambers and Michelle Shocked. In 2001, the band released their third album, Sink or Swim in Australia, but it didn't arrive in America until the following year. The Waifs' musical honesty was captured once again with the follow-up Up All Night in Spring 2003. Two years later the (mostly) live double-disc A Brief History... came out, followed in 2007 by Sun Dirt Water.

LADY ANTEBELLUM

Lady Antebellum is a country music group formed in Nashville, Tennessee in 2006. The trio is composed of Charles Kelley (lead and background vocals), Dave Haywood (background vocals, guitar, piano, mandolin) and Hillary Scott (lead and background vocals). "Need You Now" is the title of Lady Antebellum’s second album, lifted from its leadoff track, which explores the desperate longings that make separated lovers yearn to reconnect in the wee small hours of the morning. But that “need you now” mantra isn’t just a refrain that exes leave on each other’s answering machines in the middle of the night. That message could just as easily serve as an SOS sent out to the group from fans and the music industry. The band’s first album, from 2008, was the very rare freshman effort to debut at No. 1 and/or go Platinum these days, and the emotional connection that was forged with audiences over the short course of several hit singles and high-profile tours clearly left ‘em wanting—no, needing—more. Thankfully, unlike in the song, we won’t even have to do any drunk-dialing to get what we’ve craved. Less than two years after the trio’s debut first hit stores with a splash, "Need You Now" is at hand to satisfy the hunger. There’s been no lull in the roll Lady Antebellum is on. They’ve had back-to-back chart-topping singles, proceeding directly from the previous effort’s “I Run to You” hitting the top spot in July to their “Need You Now” single enjoying a multi-week run at No. 1 just prior to the new album’s release. Even without any pop radio play, “Need You Now” cracked the top 10 of Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100, and the tune went to No. 1 on the iTunes all-genre singles chart.

KID ROCK - Born Free (2010)

Kid Rock will release his 8th studio album, 'Born Free,' on November 16th via Atlantic Records. The record was produced by Rick Rubin and mixed by Greg Fidelman. The first single from the album will be, appropriately, 'Born Free' which hits radio September 14th. 'Born Free' is in many ways a transformational album for Kid Rock. While there is still the edge, wit, and swagger of previous albums, he doesn't rap, there's no metal - there isn't even a parental warning sticker. Says Kid Rock, 'The catalyst for this record was Detroit, and my thoughts on the world through the lens of Detroit. Watching everything go downhill over the past few years, the economy, the loss of jobs everywhere, I wanted to make a record that reflected the times but that still had soul.' The bulk of the album was recorded live in a two week span in Los Angeles with a stellar cast of musicians including Heartbreaker Benmont Tench, Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, David Hidalgo from Los Lobos and Chavez guitarist Matt Sweeney. Studios in Detroit, Nashville and Atlanta were used to incorporate collaborations with Bob Seger, Sheryl Crow, Zac Brown, Trace Adkins, and in a pairing surely never to be replicated - T.I. and Martina McBride on the track 'Care.' Kid Rock and Rick Rubin, as friends, have spent many hours talking about their respective histories - starting in hip-hop, crossing into and creating new territories - as well as the need for a great new American classic rock record that challenges the field. 'Born Free' is in part the result of those conversations - an album that is meant to be played from start to finish.

Born Free, Kid Rock's follow-up to 2007's platinum (three times over) Rock N Roll Jesus, was produced by Rick Rubin and features guest appearances from T.I., Martina McBride, Trace Adkins, Zac Brown, Sheryl Crow, Bob Seger, and James Hetfield.

TRACKS:
01. Born Free 02. Slow My Roll 03. Care (feat. Martina McBride & T.I.) 04. Purple Sky 05. When It Rains 06. God Bless Saturday 07. Collide (feat. Sheryl Crow & Bob Seger on piano) 08. OVER THE RHINE - Drunkard's Prayer (2005)

Over the Rhine is an American, Ohio-based band, the core of which is the husband-and-wife team of pianist/ guitarist/ bassist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/guitarist Karin Bergquist. After the heavily produced Films for Radio and the sprawling double CD Ohio, Over the Rhine retrenches for this stunning follow-up. Recorded in the living room of the duo's home, the low-key glow that results brings the music even closer to its source. Bits of folk, jazz, pop, and country intermingle as the singing and songwriting husband-and-wife partnership of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler let the sparkling, yet subtle melodies of these ten originals--plus a lovely cover of "My Funny Valentine", dictate the sparse instrumentation and languid but never haphazard tempos. This is music of delicate beauty, tinged with regret, sadness, and hope, yet devoid of pretense. It sounds like these songs fell out of the sky, drifting through the clouds and arriving with help from Bergquist's exquisite voice. Her double-tracked vocals dart through tinkling piano lines on "Born," making the already exquisite song shimmer. Stand-up bass and occasional cello and sax along with a dash of percussion bolster these chamber-styled ballads that float like lilies on a pond. But there's a flickering intensity to like "Firefly," in which Bergquist repeats "My memory will not fail me now," that adds an edgy tautness to this emotionally stirring album. - amazon.com

THE HANDSOME FAMILY - In The Air (2000)

Chicago's Handsome Family draws its inspiration from traditional murder ballads, but unlike the Carter Family, whose name they pun, Brett and Rennie Sparks do it out of a fascination with the macabre rather than a familiarity with it. In the Air, the couple's fourth album, chronicles a world full of death, snakes, dark highways, and sad milkmen. To the Sparkses (Rennie writes the lyrics; Brett sings them), this world isn't bleak or bizarre, it's beautiful, and vivid. Here a man isn't simply skinny, he's "thin as the bow of his black violin." And here, when William got killed, the murderer lingered and "watched as his blood ran through dead grass / Watched as the black ants crawled through his hands." And somehow, through Brett's sonorous baritone, Rennie's breathy melodica, and guest Andrew Bird's violin, even such violence seems ultimately peaceful. Murder & love, terror & serenity, sadness & joy, all float like leaves within the tracks. It exudes the fragile beauty of handwoven lace covering the bloody corpse of your long lost love who's been disemboweled by a wolf pack; a record that doesn't shy away from the essential bittersweetness of human life. Underneath the guitar & bass you'll hear autoharp, mandolin, melodica, harmonica, as well as church choirs, English horns & pipe organs. Guest musician ANDREW BIRD added a layer of the diabolic w/virtuoso violin. - amazon.com

STRAWBS - Live At The BBC, Vol.1 - In Session (2010)

Strawbs (or The Strawbs) are an English rock band founded in 1964. Although the band started out as a bluegrass group they eventually moved on to other styles such as folk rock, glam rock and progressive rock. They are best known for their hit Part of the Union, which reached number two in the UK charts in February 1973, and for touring with Supertramp in their Crime of the Century Tour, doing their Hero and Heroine Tour, which drew musical similarities and themes.

Digitally remastered collection that combines all of their BBC sessions onto one disc for the first time. It charts their rise to success and contains In Session versions of tracks from both their Folk and Prog rock periods. Having worked the underground folk clubs of the 1960s the Strawbs became pioneers of the early '70s Prog Rock scene, uniquely merging the two scenes together. They enjoyed critical and commercial success and played with some of the finest members of both scenes including Sandy Denny and Rick Wakeman. - cduniverse.com

STRAWBS - Live At The BBC, Vol.2 - In Concert (2010)

The first disc begins with a 1971 concert at the Paris Theatre in London. Band members are-Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper-vocals and guitars, Rick Wakeman-keyboards, John Ford-bass/vocals, and Richard Hudson-drums/vocals. This concert is a perfect example of the band moving from pure folk, with Cousins' plaintive voice and acoustic guitar arrangements ("Martin Luther King"), to folk-rock ("A Glimpse of Heaven"), to more progressive sounds ("R.M.W."-hmmm, I wonder whose initials they are ?), a solo spotlight for Wakeman, who was soon to join YES. But the band was capable of playing pure folk (the banjo led "When You Wore A Tulip"), and then playing a long progressive sounding song like "Sheep" with no problem. The 1973 concert shows the band had moved on with a true rock band sound (with the addition of rock orientated Dave Lambert replacing Tony Hooper), making good use of Blue Weaver's keyboards. The guitars now were primarily electric, and the rhythm section (especially Hudson's drums which have been pushed forward) kept to a stricter rock sound, which pushed the songs along in a stronger fashion. The band consisted of Cousins, Lambert-vocals/guitars, Weaver-keyboards, Ford-bass/vocals, and Hudson-drums/vocals. Evidence that the band didn't take themselves to seriously can be heard in the song "Bovver Blues", sung by Hudson. The final concert, from 1974, has a revamped band, with several new members, including Cousins, Lambert, John Hawken-keyboards, Chas Cronk-bass/vocals, and Rod Coombes-drums. This is the band that forged a more progressive, harder sound that they would take to America and relative fame. Tracks like "Lay Down", "Just Love", "Hero and Heroine", and another rendition of "New World" show the band in a harder rocking style that they would continue refining for a number of years.

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS - Damn The Torpedoes (1979) - Deluxe Edition (2010)

"Damn the Torpedoes" is the third album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released in 1979 by MCA Records. It was released to commercial success and critical acclaim becoming the band's breakthrough album. In 2003, the album was ranked number 313 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. All formats of the Deluxe Edition will come with nine additional bonus tracks not included on the original album. Seven of these tracks are previously unreleased including two studio tracks, "Nowhere" and "Surrender," both written by Tom Petty and recorded and completed during the Damn The Torpedoes sessions. The never-before-heard "Nowhere" was thought to have been lost in 1979 when the tape boxes were being moved daily to avoid the possibility that court bailiffs would claim them as part of Petty's assets in the lawsuit at the time. Recording engineer Ryan Ulyate found the song recently while he was listening to tapes searching for alternate versions of songs to be included on the current release. The original 1979 recording of "Surrender" is also included on the bonus disc. "Surrender" was a mainstay of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' concert setlists for many years although this original studio version recorded for Damn The Torpedoes, which includes Stan Lynch on drums, never saw the light of day until now. Also included on the bonus disc is an original demo for the B-side "Casa Dega" and an alternate take of "Refugee" as well as a trio of live performances at London's Hammersmith Odeon (March 6, 1980), including "Don't Do Me Like That," the first hit single from the album. - amazon.com

DEMOLITION STRING BAND - Pulling Up Atlantis (2001) thumbup

The Demolition String Band is the brainchild of New Yorkers Elena Skye and Boo Reiners, who make a heartfelt attempt to meld honky-tonk, bluegrass, and rock & roll into a new package while maintaining a solid retro sound. Skye's earnest lyrics and voice, coupled with Reiners's twangy guitar, are well-suited for the rock-country sound they're after, neither straining too hard for false authenticity nor playing the genre for laughs. Their craftsmanship and affection for the retro roadhouse sound is apparent on every song, from the raucous shuffle of "Gone So Long," to the giddy-up cowboy rhythms on Madonna's "Like a Prayer," to the bluesy, organ-grinding "Opportunity." Reiners's banjo, lap-steel, and guitar leads throughout are both spirited and economic, indicating careful study of the pioneers he emulates, such as James Burton and Link Wray. On the title song, the least retro of the bunch, and the rockish, '60s sounding "One Shot," Reiners launches into lengthy, reverb-drenched, psychedelic solos, sesting a link to other urban folk-rockers such as Jerry Garcia and Neil Young. - amazon.com

BETTY DYLAN - American Trash (2001)

Nashville duo Betty Dylan may just be on to something, a way to save alt country from itself by politicizing it in a way hinted at by Steve Earle and a few others: Hippies and Rednecks Unite! The husband and wife team of Dan and Vickie Dubelman, ... play Uncle P's Friday behind their startling new disc, Abdicate the Throne. The pair kick the recording off with "The Star Spangled Banner" and proceed to bracket the title track (a blunt and blatant call for impeachment of the boss) and nine other originals with a snarling closing cover of that other Dylan's "Masters of War." No less a personage than the eminent veteran New York DJ Vin Scelsa heralded the band on a recent "Air America" broadcast. The group is a dark and shambling throwback to the Crazy Horse of the early '70s (among other groups), and as an added plus they feature Lexington-based drummer Tim Welch, one of the best groove-oriented rock drummers in the Midwest. They proudly note that they've been banned from ever again playing at Nashville's storied and oh-so-correct singer-songwriter hellhole, the Bluebird. That is its own high praise. - LeoWeekly.com

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - The Promise (2010)

"Darkness was my 'samurai' record," Springsteen writes, "stripped to the frame and ready to rumble. But the music that got left behind was substantial." For the first time, fans will have access to two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the Darkness recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after Born To Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness on the Edge of Town became." Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Broken Hearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the now finally released, fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song, "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator, Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. SOOZIE TYRELL - White Lines (2003)

Soozie Tyrell, formerly known as Soozie Kirschner, is an American violinist and vocalist, most known for her work with Bruce Springsteen in the E Street Band. Tyrell first appeared with Bruce Springsteen in 1992 on his Lucky Town album, as a backing vocalist. She subsequently performed on every Springsteen album of new studio material since that time, primarily as a violinist and backing singer, including the albums The Ghost of Tom Joad and Devils & Dust, which were not E-Street Band albums, making her the musician who has performed on more Springsteen albums in the last twenty years than most of the other members of the E-Street Band, with the exception of Patti Scialfa and Springsteen himself....- wikipedia

Soozie Tyrell's solo debut album 'White Lines' was released April 8, 2003 on Treasure Records. Showcasing her talent as a songwriter, singer, pianist, guitarist and violinist, the album places this musician's musician at center stage - a welcome move according to many critics.

JOE BONAMASSA - Live From The Royal Albert Hall (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Guitarist Joe Bonamassa was opening for B.B. King when he was only eight years old and was a veteran of the road and gigging by the time he was 12, so it's tempting to toss him in the all flash but no soul prodigy trash bin that has been filling up pretty well since Stevie Ray Vaughan shuffled off to blues heaven - but that would be a big mistake. Bonamassa has soul, plenty of it, and he plays guitar with a reverent grace, and sometimes lost in all this is that he's a pretty good singer, too, sounding more than a little bit like a reconstituted Paul Rodgers. His stunning headline show from the Royal Albert Hall, which featured guest spots by Eric Clapton and Paul Jones, was released in 2009 on DVD and download versions of the songs have been available on iTunes for a while, but this two-disc set marks the first official release of the concert as an album in and of itself, and it's simply wonderful, full of great guitar playing, solid singing, and with a horn section and double drummers on board, the sound is full and even majestic. Bonamassa is the real deal, and tracks here like the elegant opener "Django," "The Ballad of John Henry," the marvelous cover of Charley Patton's "High Water Everywhere," and a shifting, sprawling workout on Rod Stewart's "Blues Deluxe" show a musician at the top of his game, one who has learned that a guitar lead should serve the song and not the other way around. Bonamassa isn't some kid prodigy anymore - he's grown up into one of the most soulful blues-rock performers on the planet. There's plenty of proof of that here. ~ cduniverse.com

V.A. - Come And Get It: A Tribute To Badfinger (1996)

Badfinger deserve a tribute album a lot more than most, because few modern rock fans know them. Their four Top 15 singles for the Beatles' Apple label, from March 1970 to April 1972, all rank in anyone's Top Ten of the greatest post-Beatles, heavy power pop songs. Sing the choruses of "Day After Day" (done here by 20/20), "Baby Blue" (Aimee Mann), "No Matter What" (the Knack), and the Paul McCartney-penned "Come and Get It" (Adrian Belew), and the response invariably is, "I know that song! I love that song! That's Badfinger?" Likewise, their four LPs for Apple (before their two so-so Warner Bros. releases) contain many special moments. But a more loving tribute than Come and Get It: A Tribute to Badfinger would be hard to imagine. All 22 artists exhibit the sort of reverence Badfinger once had for the Beatles! The dais is a bit strange: no quibble with Mann, whose "Baby Blue" is really crisp, the Loud Family, the Rooks, the Salteens (Ken Stringfellow from the Posies in disguise), and a few others. And it's nice to see '60s guru and Zombies' champion Al Kooper, who once sat in with Badfinger in the studio (as he'd already done with Bob Dylan and the Who), take a turn. But the Knack? 20/20? Belew? Dwight Twilley? The re-formed Plimsouls (albeit with hot Blondie drummer Clem Burke)? Can you say '70s new wave party? Completely conversely, too many acts here are no-names with the scent of studio project, a common tribute album disease, however (in this case) enthusiastic. Such baby bands are overmatched by Badfinger's talent and soulful interplay. Where is all the cream of indie talent? Still, whatever attention these too-old and too-new fans draw to Badfinger is welcome, and in the end, miraculously, there isn't a single total stinker! ~ All Music Guide

MARY GAUTHIER - Genesis: The Early Years (2008)

Rarely is a more interesting story more frankly told than that of Mary Gauthier(that's "go-shay", by the way). Given up at birth by a mother she never knew, Mary bounced around right from the top and was adopted by parents of the Italian Catholic persuasion in Thibodoux, LA. She was a classic wild child - gay bars, detox, even prison, before she straightened out. Studied Philosophy at L.S.U., then attended Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, and founded Boston's first Cajun restaurant - drinking all the way, right up to opening night. Three big turnarounds encapsulate the story of Mary: rising above a dangerously errant youth, getting sober, and becoming a professional and heralded singer songwriter by not writing her first songs until her mid-thirties. That, and then writing so well from such a visceral and gut wrenching place that it resonates with the press, her heroes, and the audience alike. Gauthier's stock in trade is deep portraiture of the disenfranchised and edgier characters among us, and the darker corners of the heart and soul. She shows the hard-earned knowledge of herself in her understanding and compassion for the stories of others, which she tells so well.

A collection of 13 songs from Mary's critically acclaimed first three albums plus two previously unreleased live recordings.

SMOKIE - Wild Horses: The Nashville Album (1998)

To be rock 'n' roll survivors is an achievement. To be Europe's top live band, thirty years after its inception is truly fantastic but to still be enthusiastic, fresh, totally committed and in love with the music is a positive miracle. 1997 saw the band travel to the USA, and the world capital of music, Nashville. They secured the services of renowned record producer, Barry Beckett to oversee the making of a new album. Barry was impressed with the musical and vocal talents of the band, and called in some favours from lots of writers, even the extremely talented and very famous Diane Warren. The selection of material for Smokie to work with was amazing, it was difficult to come up with the final selection of tracks, but what a selection. Wild Horses was born, an albumWild Horses album cover with a strong new country-rock flavour, but the unmistakable sounds of Smokie was to make it one of the most satisfying albums the band has ever made. Wild Horses has proved to be a very popular and successful album throughout Europe, and the tracks from it are now all firm favourites with the fans. - smokie.co.uk

JOHNNY CASH & WILLIE NELSON - VH1 Storytellers (1998)

Two of the greatest artists in country music history swapping stories and songs! How could anything go wrong? The truth is, meetings of legends often fail to meet expectations. Perhaps this one works because the concept is so simple: two men exchanging their signature songs and stories behind them. Johnny checks in with "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," Willie retorts with "Funny How Time Slips Away," and so on. Nothing wrong with that. Taken from the VH1 special Storytellers, this album is, as Cash explains in the notes, "two guitars, two stools and (me) and Willie." That perfect concept doesn't disappoint, the Man in Black and the Redheaded Stranger deliver moving guitar-and-voice performances of their best-known compositions and a few of their finer covers, Cash's deep rumble taking turns with Willie's fragile tenor over 15 songs. Both legends provide beautiful moments throughout, though the edge might have to go to Cash, since, in line with the show's concept, he frequently recounts the stories that inspired his art. Nelson, however, mainly limits himself to revealing that he wrote his three greatest songs ("Funny How Time Slips Away," "Crazy," and "Night Life") all in one week. The stories behind why he wrote them remain untold. - amazon.com

04. Used Cars

08. Wasted

12. Looking Back

A solid guitarist, singer and songwriter, Brown's debut is mind-blowingly fantastic, a singular achievement from an artist who has been practicing her craft for the last 20 years. Her release is an honest record that is equal parts Southern rock and country, with blues and folk flavoring. While comparisons to Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Allison Moorer, Susan Tedeschi and Lucinda Williams are just a few inevitable musical touchstones for comparison, Maggie has her own incomparable style. Add a dash of Tom Petty and Delbert McClinton… and you've got a sense of Brown's musical range. - amazon.com

CINDY BULLENS - Neverland (2001) thumbup

Cindy Bullens is a two-time Grammy nominee whose 25-year career in the music business has included working with Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and many others. She sang three lead vocals on the "Grease" movie soundtrack and has recorded several of her own critically acclaimed albums, including her first, 1979's "Desire Wire," which catapulted Cindy into the international spotlight. Cindy Bullens's 1999 release, "Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth", is an exceptional ode to her late daughter (who died at age 11) that does what great art should do: turn the passionately personal into the universal. "Neverland" is a transitional work that references the tragedy (in the title song and "Right Kind of Goodbye") while moving on to other subjects. John Hiatt joins her for "Hammer and Nails," about the work that must accompany the passion, while "Sensible Shoes" references rocker Bullens's refusal to conform to expectations. She even finds time to have fun with a sexy blues ("Baby I Want Your Love"). Steve Earle's twang-trust partner Ray Kennedy helps provide the perfect guitar-driven setting for the singer's pipes (Earle himself lends a vocal hand on the title tune), helping Bullens in the quest to move on with her life, at the same time enriching ours. - amazon.com

Sugarland is an American country music duo composed of singer–songwriters Jennifer Nettles (lead vocals) and Kristian Bush (background vocals, lead vocals, mandolin, acoustic guitar, and harmonica). The duo was founded in 2002 by Kristen Hall, joined by Bush and ultimately became a trio after hiring Jennifer Nettles as lead singer. Signed to Mercury Nashville Records in 2004, Sugarland broke through that year with the release of their debut single "Baby Girl," the first single from their multi-platinum debut album "Twice the Speed of Life". The trio became a duo in 2006, when they also released their second album, "Enjoy the Ride". This album produced their first two #1 singles (in the U.S.), "Want To" and "Settlin'," and won the duo a Grammy for "Stay."

GARY MOORE - Parisienne Walkways: The Blues Collection (2003)

Although he took a pop-metal detour during the '80s, guitarist Gary Moore was always a blues-rock guitarist at heart. After all, his chief instrument throughout his career has been a Les Paul that once belonged to Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green, and he played on the original version of Thin Lizzy's slow-burning bluesy tour de force "Still in Love With You." By the dawn of the '90s, Moore had grown tired of trying to keep pace with the Def Leppards of the rock world, and returned to his original love. The move paid off immediately for Moore, as 1990's Still Got the Blues was a worldwide hit, and as a result, the guitarist continued with this direction for much of the decade. The 2004 12-track compilation Blues Collection is true to its title, as it includes the cream of this aforementioned rootsy era. Moore sounds reinvigorated on much of the material here, especially "Oh Pretty Woman" (nope, not the Roy Orbison song of the same name), "Walking By Myself," and "Cold Day in Hell." Also included is the Phil Lynott-penned classic from the late '70s, "Parisienne Walkways," and the George Harrison-penned "That Kind of Woman," which proves to be a break from the blues (it would have fit comfortably on a Traveling Wilburys album). But one glaring omission prevents Blues Collection from being the definitive Moore blues collection - the title track from Still Got the Blues, which just so happens to be arguably Moore's best blues track of them all. - cduniverse.com

This 2003 album collects 12 tracks from Gary Moore, including several excellent live performances, and Albert King guesting on "Oh Pretty Woman."

TRACKS:
01. Oh Pretty Woman (feat. Albert King) 02. Walking By Myself 03. Need Your Love So Bad 04. Merry Go Round 05. Showbiz Blues 06. Love That Burns 07. Parisienne Walkways (Live) 08. That Kind Of Woman 09. The Sky Is Crying 10. Cold Day In Hell 11. Only Fool In Town 12. King Of The Blues (Live)

TEN YEARS AFTER - Think About The Times: The Chrysalis Years 1969 To 1972 (2010)

2010 three CD release featuring albums plus rare tracks all recorded during their time on Chrysalis Records. Their fourth album, Ssssh., issued in August 1969, coincided with their breakthrough appearance at the Woodstock festival, a definite highlight of the subsequent film and LP of that show. Fifth album Cricklewood Green, issued in April 1970, featured their biggest UK chart hit with 'Love Like A Man'. 1971's A Space In Time showed a change in direction, no doubt inspired by the more acoustic sounds prevalent in the States at the time. As well as producing their biggest Stateside hit with 'I'd Love To Change the World', this set is completed by Rock & Roll Music to the World from 1972, a classic mix of the blues and rock 'n' roll that made the band such a successful live draw, with lead guitarist Alvin Lee hailed as one of the fastest players in the world. This set also includes rare b-sides and single edits, appearing on CD for the first time. - amazon.com

V.A. - Good Rockin' Tonight: Legacy Of Sun Records (2001)

Most of the artists on this tribute to Sam Phillips's legendary Memphis label have chosen to cover the rockabilly hits. It isn't until a genuine Sun rockabilly artist - the late Carl Perkins--makes an appearance, joining Van Morrison for Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' on Top of the World," that things briefly get bluesy. Instead, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Chrissie Hynde, Tom Petty, and Bryan Ferry all offer up loving, note-for-note recreations of early Elvis tunes, even if it was Jerry Lee Lewis, not Elvis, who recorded a cover of "Don't Be Cruel" (Ferry's tune) for Sun. But Elton John and Mandy Barnett both do The Killer (Lewis) proud here, as Sheryl Crow later does for Charlie Rich, and Led Zep's Page & Plant do for Sonny Burgess. Especially marvelous is Bob Dylan's subtle and, at times, hilarious take on Warren Smith's "Red Cadillac and a Black Moustache." It's a career highlight and every bit as enchanting as Robert Gordon's '70s cover version. Like the label itself, there are more hits than misses here. - amazon.com

BRYAN ADAMS - Bare Bones (2010)

Bare Bones is a collection of minimally arranged hits culled from Bryan Adams’ body of work spanning three decades and was recorded in spring 2010 during his Bare Bones Tour. The recordings feature only his distinctive voice and guitar, accompanied on select songs by keyboardist Gary Breit. Inspired by his experience recording MTV Unpled in the 90s, Adams decided to revisit performing his material pared down once again in 2008. With a consistently loyal following on the road, Adams continued playing live shows with these new sparse arrangements in 2010, and as an experiment decided to start recording them for a possible record. Bare Bones is the result, and includes favourites like "Heaven", "(Everything I Do) I Do it For You" and "Run to You".

ROY BUCHANAN - Secret Love: The Best of Roy Buchanan (1995)

Roy Buchanan was one of America's true geniuses of the electric guitar. Even posthumously, he commands the ardent respect of his fellow guitarists and a devoted army of fans. The Buchanan sound is unique: heartbreaking, searing solos, trademark shimmering tone, gorgeous melodies and a mixture of lightning quickness and technical creativity that mark him as a wizard of the instrument. He was a pioneer in the use of controlled harmonics, and although this technique has been used by the likes of Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, all acknowledge Buchanan as the master...

Buchanan's skill, soul and technical innovations were nothing less than marvels to his contemporaries and admirers. Without his inventiveness, the landscape of modern guitar playing would be completely different. Buchanan died in Virginia in 1988. He was 48 years old. - amazon.com

JOHN MAYER TRIO - Try! (2005)

Longtime listeners have seen it coming: it was only a matter of time before John Mayer dropped the pop star pretense and proved he could really bring it. Chalk it up to one too many Dave Matthews comparisons, or the cupcake-sweet residue stuck to his image after the success of "Your Body Is a Wonderland" - but something convinced Mayer it was time to take him game to the next level. With help from studio pros Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino, he succeeds on Try. If the muscled-up covers of Jimi Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow" and Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman" don't scream "no more Mr. Nice Guy" loud enough, the brawn of blues-rock opener "Who Do You Think I Was" does for sure. Mixed in with the Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton-esque stuff are a few mellow numbers - "Daughters," most notably, returns from Heavier Things alongside "Something's Missing"- but even those songs seem hopped up on rock-God hormones. This newfound sizzle can't fix everything; that segment of the music-buying public that would accuse the singer of having a voice like "a whispering midget" (to quote a customer review of Mayer's work) won't want to add this disc to their collection. The good news for Mayer, though, is that anybody with an ear for genuine rock'n'roll chops will. - amazon.com

TONY JOE WHITE - The Shine (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbup

The 21st century saw Tony Joe White resume his recording and performing career, and experience a resurgence of critical interest in his older music as well. Since 2002, "the Swamp Fox" has recorded sporadically for his own Swamp imprint, and also had his back catalog remastered and reissued. Earlier in 2010, Rhino Handmade made available That On the Road Look, a previously unreleased live date. The Shine is a (mostly) low-key, basic affair. White wrote or co-wrote everything here with his wife, Leann. The band is a quintet: White plays guitars and harmonica with drummer Jack Bruno, cellist John Catchings, bassist George Hawkins, and Tyson Rogers on piano, organ, and Wurlitzer. The sound is warm and raw; the album feels like it was cut mostly live from the floor (with guitar and vocal overdubs added) and it's full of natural atmospherics. White's acoustic nylon-string guitar is prevalent, sometimes more so than his quavering, downright spooky baritone. His electric six-string work paints the backdrop. The only real exceptions are the downright rocker "Strange Night," where White displays everything that Mark Knopfler copped from his style inside of five minutes. The levels feel off, overloaded; the vocals come from the backdrop as the guitars and drums smoulder, smoke, and bubble.... - cduniverse.com

VANILLA FUDGE - Box of Fudge [Rhino Handmade] (2010)

For a brief moment in 1967, Vanilla Fudge stood at the swirling center of the pop-music universe, satisfying fans searching for transformative musical experiences with its symphonic psychedelic rock. Sweetened by intricate vocal harmonies and classical flourishes, The Fudge’s innovative mix of rhythm and blues shone brightly as a new era of heavy music was dawning at the start of the 1970s. Organist Mark Stein, bassist Tim Bogert, lead guitarist Vince Martell, and drummer Carmine Appice recorded five albums in two years. They toured relentlessly, winning converts with radical reworkings of hits like The Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hanging On” while “raising” the bar for after-show escapades. Rhino Handmade devotes equal time to The Fudge’s influential studio and live legacies with a four-disc boxed set that combines album tracks and rare singles with unreleased recordings. Presented in an elaborately designed, foil wrapped package, the set also comes with an 11x17 replica Family Dog poster from one of the band’s shows.

The first two discs flow mostly in chronological order, beginning with Vanilla Fudge’s earliest recordings, including the band’s first single with Atco, “Take Me For A Little While.” It continues with selections from the group’s self-titled debut, The Beat Goes On (1968), Renaissance (1968), Near The Beginning (1969) and Rock And Roll (1969), plus two songs from Mystery, the band’s brief 1984 reunion. Along with gathering a number of singles, the collection also marks the debut of the previously unreleased “Heartache Jam,” originally recorded in 1969.

The final two discs spotlight Vanilla Fudge on stage in its prime with an unreleased recording of the band welcoming the arrival of 1969 with a New Year’s concert at the Fillmore West. Recorded shortly before the quartet’s fourth album was released, the show draws on The Fudge’s early days for “People Get Ready” and “Ticket To Ride” as well as its forthcoming album Near The Beginning with “Shotgun” and an epic version – more than 20 minutes – of “Break Song.”

The collection concludes with “Love Jam,” “Movin’On” and “VF Studio Jam,” a trio of previously unreleased tracks recorded in New York at Atlantic Recording Studio just months before the original quartet splintered.

JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT - No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded - LIVE! (1994)

The long awaited reunion between Page and Plant occurred on a 90 minute "UnLedded" MTV project, recorded in Morocco, Wales, and London, which rated highly on network television. It was not a reunion of Led Zeppelin, however, as former bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones was not present. In fact, Jones was not even told about the reunion by his former band mates. He later commented that he was unhappy about Plant and Page naming the album after "No Quarter", a Led Zeppelin song which was largely his work. In addition to acoustic numbers, the album features a reworking of Led Zeppelin classics, along with four Middle-Eastern and Moroccan-influenced songs: "City Don't Cry," "Yallah," (or "The Truth Explodes") "Wonderful One," and "Wah Wah". The album was #4 on debut on the Billboard's Pop Albums chart. - wikipedia

01. Nobody's Fault But Mine 02. Thank You 03. No Quarter 04. Friends 05. Yallah 06. City Don't Cry 07. Since I've Been Loving You 08. The Battle of Evermore 09. Wonderful One 10. That's the Way 11. Gallows Pole 12. Four Sticks 13. Kashmir

THE BLACK KEYS - Brothers (2010)

Retreating from the hazy Danger Mouse-fueled pot dream of Attack & Release, the Black Keys headed down to the legendary Muscle Shoals, recording their third album on their own and dubbing it Brothers. The studio, not to mention the artwork patterned after such disregarded Chess psychedelic-era relics as This Is Howlin' Wolf's New Album, are good indications that the tough blues band of the Black Keys earliest records is back, but the group hasn't forgotten what they've learned in their inwardly psychedelic mid-period. Brothers still can get mighty trippy - the swirling chintzy organ that circles "The Only One," the Baroque harpsichord flair of "Too Afraid to Love You" - but the album is built with blood and dirt, so its wilder moments remain gritty without being earthbound. Sonically, that scuffed-up spaciness - the open air created by the fuzz guitars and phasing, analog keyboards, and cavernous drums - is considerably appealing, but the Black Keys ace in the hole remains the exceptional songwriting Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney are so good at as they twist a Gary Glitter stomp into swamp fuzz blues, steal a title from Archie Bell & the Drells but never reference that classic Tighten Up groove, or approximate a slow `60s soul crawl on "Unknown Brother" and follow it up with a version of Jerry Butler's "Never Gonna Give You Up," and it's nearly impossible to tell which is the cover. And that's the great thing about the Black Keys in general and Brothers in particular: the past and present intermingle so thoroughly that they blur, yet there's no affect, just three hundred pounds of joy. ~ cduniverse.com

MUNGO JERRY - The Hit Collection [Remastered] (2005)

Mungo Jerry is an English rock group whose greatest success was in the early 1970s, though they have continued throughout the years with an ever-changing line-up, always fronted by Ray Dorset. They are remembered above all for their hit "In the Summertime". It remains their most successful and most instantly recognisable song. Their name was inspired by the poem Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer, from T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.[1] According to Joseph Murrell's The Book of Golden Discs (1978), 'Mungomania' was possibly the most startling and unpredicted pop phenomenon to hit Britain since The Beatles. Mungo Jerry was awarded from Melody Maker the 'best new band' title in 1970, and as one of the five best live bands in the world in 1971. Dorset was granted three Ivor Novello Awards as a composer. - wikipedia

V.A. - Crossroads - Eric Clapton Guitar Festival 2010 (2010)

By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in mid-1970, he was long established as one of the world's major rock stars due to his group affiliations -- the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith - which had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation. Clapton has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo performer and as a member of the bands Yardbirds and Cream. He is the only person ever to be inducted three times. In his 40-year-plus career, Eric Clapton has received a total of 18 Grammys. Often credited as being one of the all-time greatest guitarists, and known amongst his peers as one of the all-time greatest collaborators. The ultimate Clapton collaboration took place on June 26, 2010 at Chicago's Toyota Park. For one day only, Clapton gathered the past, present, and future of guitar music onto one stage for an incredible all-day musical event in front of a crowd of over 27,000. The third Crossroads Guitar Festival was a sold out, 11-hour tour de force with all profits benefiting The Crossroads Centre in Antigua, a treatment and education facility founded by Clapton for chemically dependent persons. Rhino Entertainment captured every epic note from that blistering summer day in Chicago, and will release over 4 hours of footage in High Definition on 'CROSSROADS GUITAR FESTIVAL 2010.' Fans around the world will have a chance to experience many of the festival's greatest moments, including performances by Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, Steve Winwood, BB King, Jeff Beck, Sheryl Crow, Buddy Guy and many others, as well as behind-the-scenes footage and candid interviews with the performers. - amazon.com

RAY DAVIES - The Storyteller (1998) thumbupthumbupthumbup

The "storyteller" concept was ideal for aging singer/songwriters, letting them run through their back catalog and illuminate the origins of their best-known songs with stories and anecdotes. Ray Davies essentially invented the concept on his promotional tour for his semi-fictional memoir X-Ray, and his concerts were so successful, they eventually provided the basis for the VH1 series Storyteller. It also led to Storyteller, his first solo album since the soundtrack to Return to Waterloo. Like that album, it has a sound very similar to the Kinks - which shouldn't be surprising, since Davies was the musical force behind the band - but it's considerably more engaging than Return to Waterloo. Much of the record is devoted to Kinks' classics, all of which are fleshed out by Davies' clever, revealing stories, and many of which are taken from X-Ray. There are also a number of fine new or previously unreleased songs, like "Storyteller," "Art School Babe," "Back in the Front Room," "It's Alright," "The Ballad of Julie Finkle," and "London Song," which is the only song on the collection recorded live in the studio, not in concert. Certainly, the narrative element of Storyteller makes it of interest primarily to hardcore Kinks fans, but by 1998, the only type of Kinks fan that existed was hardcore, and they'll find the album filled with delights, both expected and unexpected. ~ All Music Guide
