SLASH featuring MYLES KENNEDY - Live In Manchester (2010)

Live in Manchester is a double live album by Velvet Revolver and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash featuring Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy. The album was recorded by Abbey Road Live, during Slash's solo show at the Manchester Academy on July 3, 2010. Only 1,200 copies of the album were made available with 350 being sold after the show itself. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered "on-the-fly" during the show by Abbey Road Live. This type of recording differs from a “board” mix, which usually involves pling into the house sound console and taking their mix, with the album quality closer to a studio mixed live album. During the show, Slash, along with his touring band which consists of Myles Kennedy, Bobby Schneck, Todd Kerns and Brent Fitz, performed songs from his debut solo album, Slash, as well as songs from bands prominent in his career such as Guns N' Roses ("Sweet Child o' Mine", "Paradise City"), Slash's Snakepit ("Beggars & Hangers-on", "Mean Bone") and Velvet Revolver ("Fall to Pieces", "Slither"). Also performed was a cover of the Alter Bridge single "Rise Today" and Led Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown" as well as an extended guitar solo by Slash which ended with a performance of The Godfather theme "Speak Softly Love" (listed as "Godfather" on the track listing). - wikipedia

MICHAEL BLOOMFIELD, AL KOOPER, STEVE STILLS - Super Session (1968) [2003 Remastered]

A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of inger/ keyboardist/ producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time, nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune"). All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth. - cduniverse.com

RONNIE WOOD - I Feel Like Playing (2010)

As one of the premier guitarists in the world, Ronnie Wood has been featured over the years in bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Faces & The Jeff Beck Group. "I Feel Like Playing" is the 7th studio album for Wood, his first since 2001's "Not For Beginners". Featuring twelve brand new cuts, written specially for this release, I Feel Like Playing takes its name [and cover] from one of Ronnie’s most vibrant recent artworks. The color and verve of the artwork is equally reflected in the swagger and roll of the music on the album. Solo work has always co-existed alongside Ronnie’s band commitments and I Feel Like Playing is, he feels, his best album yet. Many of the friends made along the course of an incredible career contributed to the album; guests include luminaries such as Slash, Flea, Eddie Vedder, Billy F Gibbons, Kris Kristofferson, Bobby Womack, Ian McLagan and more.

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO - Real Animal (2008) & Street Songs Of Love (2010)

There are songwriters who sing their songs, and then there are songs who sing their writers. Alejandro Escovedo is one with his muse and his music. Over a lifetime spent traversing the bridge between words and melody, he has ranged over an emotional depth that embraces all forms of genre and presentation, a resolute voice that weathers the emotional terrain of our lives, its celebrations and despairs, landmines and blindsides and upheavals and beckoning distractions, in search for ultimate release and the healing truth of honesty. From his days in the now legendary punk/alt-country outfits The Nuns, Rank and File and his own True Believers, to his glowingly received solo gems including 2008's "Real Animal", Escovedo has built a rapturous underground following among fans, songwriting peers and critics alike. His highly anticipated Fantasy Records debut, "Street Songs of Love", is a 13-track celebration of survival, liberation and ultimate salvation.

"We were just having a chat in his studio. I said that I wanted to make a modern record, but not too modern. I know I've got to compete with 25 year old kids here, but I'm not Green Day and all that! THE NEW BARBARIANS - Buried Alive: Live In Maryland (2006)

A year after Some Girls, Keith Richard and Ron Wood set out on a brief, ramshackle tour as the New Barbarians, supported by Stanley Clark on bass, Ian McLaughlin and Bobby Keys. This was brief but legendary, since it could be romanticized as the Stones' Id unhinged - the two hardest partiers in the band, out on their own, rampaging and pillaging, drinking and dring, running wild. Apart from a single that was kind of released, but not really, there were no official recordings, but plenty of bootlegs circulated over the years, with no official release of the live material until 2006's Buried Alive: Live in Maryland appeared. This performance has circulated before, but never in such clear fidelity, or in such careful packaging, which is why this is worthwhile for those who already have the boots. But this is really for listeners (aka Stones fans) who have heard the legend of the New Barbarians, but not the band itself. And they'll find that the show may not quite be legendary, but it's sure a hell of a lot of fun. It's a little bit tighter than the band's reputation might sest - Richard and Wood may be a little ragged, but they're anchored by the rest of the band, which doesn't give this the sense of being a careening, glorious mess. And if Wood actually sings more than Richard, there's also little question who the real star is: whenever Keef steps to the mic, he pushes Wood to the side, and the encores are almost all his. But leadership doesn't quite matter here, since this is at its core just a guy's night out - that the guys are pros means this isn't as loose as the Replacements, but it also means that they're tight enough to pull off an entertaining show while still seeming a bit wild. It's not quite a lost classic, then, but it's surely a great time and it's hard to imagine anybody who wants to hear this being disappointed by this two-disc set. ~ All Music Guide

NEIL YOUNG - Le Noise (2010)

This eight-song album is a collaboration between the acclaimed rock icon and musician, songwriter, and producer Daniel Lanois, known for his work with U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, The Neville Brothers and many others. As producer or co-producer Lanois won Grammy Awards in 1987, 1992, 1997, 2000, and 2001. Young and Lanois have crossed paths musically over the course of many years, including Lanois' performances at Young's Bridge School Benefit Concert and Young's performance at Farm Aid when Lanois was Willie Nelson's music director, but this is the first time the two have recorded together. Recorded in Lanois' home in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, ‘Le Noise’ features Young on acoustic and electric guitars with Lanois adding his trademark sonic textures, creating one of the most sonically arresting albums Young has ever recorded. No band, no overdubs, just ‘a man on a stool and me doing a nice job on the recording,’ as Lanois puts it. - amazon.com

TESLA - Five Man Acoustical Jam (1990) thumbup

Comparisons to MTV Unpled tend to be thrown around in an attempt to promote any pre-Unpled acoustic music by linking it with a successful, more contemporary phenomenon, but Tesla's Five Man Acoustical Jam was actually a legitimate predecessor of the trend - it bears a strong resemblance to early Unpled sessions in its informality and sense that the band is just having fun. Perhaps more importantly, the fact that a cover of the Five Man Electrical Band's "Signs" became a Top Ten hit demonstrated that acoustic rock & roll - not just ballads like Guns N' Roses' "Patience" or Extreme's "More Than Words" - could find acceptance and commercial viability with rock audiences. As for the musical results, Tesla's originals generally translate well to the acoustic format, though some of the jams tend to ramble and lose focus, a fact underscored by the tightly melodic covers of '60s classics like "Lodi" and "Mother's Little Helper." Still, this adds to the informal atmosphere, and the album is a nice change of pace from the rest of Tesla's catalog. - cduniverse.com

GATOR COUNTRY - Live (2008)

In early 2005, a new band was formed that consisted of five “Original-Era” members of the legendary southern rockers Molly Hatchet. Included were Bruce Crump (drums), Duane Roland (guitar), Steve Holland (guitar), Jimmy Farrar (vocals) and Riff West (bass). These talented musicians wrote and recorded all of Molly Hatchet’s gold and multi-platinum albums. Unquestionably, the members of GATOR COUNTRY were very instrumental in forging the legend of their earlier classic band’s sound with such songs as Flirtin’ With Disaster, Gator Country, Bounty Hunter, Whiskey Man, Beatin’ The Odds, Dreams I’ll Never See and many others. Adding an old friend and seasoned guitarist, Linni Disse, the triple-guitar-attack was back with it’s unique and traditional sound that is now GATOR COUNTRY. Recorded Live in Eastlake, Ohio.

Family friends like Lazy Lester, Buddy Guy and Slim Harpo also contributed to Kenny's early musical education. - amazon.com

MELANIE - Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits Of Melanie (1999)

"Beautiful People: The Greatest Hits of Melanie" gets the nod over the 1990 Rhino compilation "The Best of Melanie" as the best compilation of the singer's work. Containing 19 tracks where the earlier album contained 18, it could hardly be longer and fit on one CD. The songs have been mastered from their original master tapes for the first time by Robert Fripp (!) and David Singleton, so the sound quality is the best yet. The set contains the original LP version of Melanie's Top Ten hit "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," running just over seven minutes, as opposed to the nearly four-minute single edit. Also featured are two recent songs, "Summer of Love II" and "I Will Get Over." That's all on the credit side. On the debit side, it is not in chronological order and the selection leaves off several of Melanie's singles chart entries, notably "Bitter Bad," which made the Top 40 (and is included in the Rhino compilation). Nevertheless, this must be counted as the best Melanie compilation yet, featuring her number-one hit "Brand New Key," as well as standards like "Beautiful People" and "What Have They Done to My Song, Ma?." ~ All Music Guide DOWNLOAD

THE BLUES BAND - The Best Of The Blues Band (1999)

England's the Blues Band is led by ex-Manfred Mann vocalist Paul Jones and guitarist/ vocalist Dave Kelly, who, before forming the group in 1979, had been a member of the John Dummer Blues Band and issued several solo recordings on his own (Kelly had also received praise for his playing by such blues legends as Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker). After hooking up with friend/bassist Gary Fletcher, the seeds for the Blues Band were sown, resulting in countless albums (including such titles as 1980's Official Bootleg Album and Ready, 1981's Itchy Feet, 1982's Brand Loyalty which featured new member ex-Family drummer Rob Townsend, 1983's Bye Bye Blues, 1986's These Kind of Blues, 1989's Back for More, 1991's Fat City, 1993's Homage, and 1995's Wire Less, among others). ROGER GLOVER & The Guilty Party feat. Randall Bramblett - Snapshot (2002)

Even though he has produced bands and guested on other artists records over the years, bassist Roger Glover will forever be best known as a member of Deep Purple. Purple had been his main focus for some time come the early 21st century, but somehow Glover also found the time to issue a solo album, Snapshot, in 2002. Despite hard rock/heavy metal having long been Purple's musical preference, Snapshot turns out to be a major left turn for Glover, as a variety of non-headbanging styles are included - funk (the album-opening "My Turn"), reggae ("Burn Me Up Slowly"), folk-meets-soul-rock ("Queen of England"), and blues ("It's Only Life"). Although the album is credited to Glover, vocalist Randall Bramblett is really the main focus throughout, as he sings on nearly all of the album's tracks - and has no problem adapting to the various styles. Once upon a time, a solo album by a member of an established rock band usually meant a collection of tunes that didn't exactly fit in with the bandmember's renowned style. And that's exactly what Glover opted to do with Snapshot.

The former bass player for Deep Purple releases his fourth solo album and the first since 1984's Mask. The record also features New West Records recording artist Randall Bramblett on lead vocals. - cduniverse.com

ROXY MUSIC - The Best Of (2001)

What other pop band from the 1970s and early '80s conjures up the image of a debonair man in a dinner jacket ordering a dry martini and, with a devilish smirk on his face, sidling up to a voluptuous stranger in a red velvet dress? With the seductive croon of resident cad Bryan Ferry and the band's amalgam of smooth balladry, soulful R&B, and quirky pop-rock, the sound of Roxy Music is unmistakably lush, sophisticated, and difficult to resist. Devotees of the group will want most of the individual albums, including COUNTRY LIFE and AVALON. But for the casual fan or uninitiated listener, there is no better package than this 18-track compilation. THE BEST OF ROXY MUSIC has the band's best-known singles, including "More Than This," "Love Is the Drug," "Virginia Plain," and an excellent interpretation of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." Sequenced in reverse chronological order, the music morphs from Ferry-directed smooth pop to earlier, Brian Eno-influenced, experimental glam rock. (Eno left the band after the second album.) For a fine assortment of decadent pop gems, it's hard to beat this collection. - cduniverse.com

SWEET - Action: The Sweet Anthology (2009)

Sweet (originally The Sweet) was a British rock band that formed in the late 1960s and rose to prominence as one of the main glam rock acts in the 1970s, with the classic line-up consisting of Brian Connolly, Steve Priest, Andy Scott, and Mick Tucker.

Action: The Sweet Anthology is the first definitive Sweet 2-CD set and contains a whopping 32 tracks, including songs never before available on CD. The collection boasts every U.S. and U.K. charting hit from the 1970s, including "Ballroom Blitz", "Fox On The Run", "Little Willy" and "Love Is Like Oxygen". Sweet combined '70s glam style with guitar-driven tunes that were at the same time irresistibly catchy. They came to prominence with their smash hit "Little Willy" in 1973, and continued to release chart-toppers, properly representing the emerging British glam scene on this side of the pond. They did, however, successfully transition into an album-rock band with the release of Give Us A Wink, which produced the single "Action." - amazon.com

THE WHO - Who's Next (1971)
[2010 Remaster]

"Who's Next" is the fifth album by the English rock band The Who. It was released on 31 July 1971 by Decca and MCA in the United States and 25 August 1971 in the United Kingdom through Track and Polydor. The album has origins in a rock opera conceived by Pete Townshend called Lifehouse. The ambitious, complex project did not come to fruition at the time and instead, many of the songs written for the project were compiled onto Who's Next as a collection of unrelated songs. Who's Next was a critical and commercial success when it was released, and has been certified 3x platinum by the RIAA. - wikipedia

TRACKS:
01. Baba O'Riley 02. Bargain 03. Love Ain't For Keeping 04. My Wife 05. Song Is Over 06. Getting In Tune 07. Going Mobile 08. Behind Blue Eyes 09. Won't Get Fooled Again

A mix of old favorites and buried treasures makes this edition of Who's Next a definite must. One of the defining albums of 70s hard rock from one of the 60s most successful bands, the original album includes some of The Who's best-known work, such as the anthemic "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again", the by turns sorrowful and angry "Behind Blue Eyes", and perennial favorite "My Wife". The new tracks on this album are equally worth hearing, including "Pure and Easy" (an alternate edition of which is available on Odds & Sods) and the original version of "Behind Blue Eyes". A hard rock classic, Who's Next is required listening for rock fans of all ages. - amazon.com

DEEP PURPLE - Fireball (1971)
[2010 Remaster]

Fireball is a hard rock album by English rock band Deep Purple, released in 1971. It was their fifth studio album, and the second with the classic Mk II lineup. It was recorded at various times between September 1970 and June 1971. It would become the first of the band's three UK #1 albums. The album was certified Gold on July 26, 2001 by the RIAA, selling 500,000 copies in the US. - wikipedia

TRACKS:
01. Fireball 02. No No No 03. Strange Kind Of Woman 04. Anyone's Daughter 05. The Mule 06. Fools 07. No One Came

Having already gotten off to a great start with DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK, this Purple lineup of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice fit together like interlocking pieces. Blessed with such unerring chemistry, Purple raised the bar for hard rock with such nets as the hard-driving title track and the grinding "Fools." Elsewhere, they show surprising range with the country-flavored "Anyone's Daughter" (featuring some impressive finger picking by Blackmore) and the Jimi Hendrix-influenced "No One Came" (which includes a dollop of psychedelic backwards guitar). Also included is the Purple epic "The Mule," a sweeping tour de force dominated by Blackmore's Middle Eastern-tinged soloing and Lord's Pink Floyd-ian keyboard runs. The song became a highlight of Deep Purple's live shows.

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPIRIENCE - Axis Bold As Love (1967)
[2010 Remaster]

Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of "Castles Made of Sand," the viciously funky "Little Miss Lover," and the so-beautiful-it-hurts "Little Wing." Hendrix really hits altitude with "If 6 Was 9," where he waves his "freak flag high" over a tidal wave of guitar and a cacophonous army of Moroccan flutes, and he ends with "Bold As Love," based around Hendrix's typically far-fetched hankering for the axis of the planet to be tilted, thereby transforming life on earth. It works up into a head-melting frenzy of distorted guitar, a precursor to the staggeringly expansive leap forward he would take with 1968's Electric Ladyland. Hendrix dreamed the impossible and achieved it on his guitar. - amazon.com

TRACKS:
01. EXP 02. Up From The Skies 03. Spanish Castle Magic 04. Wait Until Tomorrow 05. Ain't No Telling 06. Little Wing 07. If 6 Was 9 08. You Got Me Floatin' 09. Castles Made Of Sand 10. She's So Fine 11. One Rainy Wish 12. Little Miss Lover 13. Bold As Love

The sensational sophomore release of The Jimi Hendrix Experience highlights Hendrix's own evolving musical experimentalism and acknowledges his early musical influences of soul and R&B. Remastered from the original two-track mixdown master tapes, Axis: Bold As Love's 13-songs show the evolving trio as they neared the height of their career. Features the seminal classics "Spanish Castle Magic," "Little Wing," "Castles Made Of Sand," and the classic Easy Rider anthem, "If 6 Was 9."

V.A. - Blue Haze - Songs of Jimi Hendrix (2000)

Blue Haze: Songs of Jimi Hendrix is a tribute that coincides with the 30th anniversary of the guitarist's death. Featuring tracks from old friends like Eric Burdon (on two tracks and author of the liner notes) and Buddy Miles along with a host of admirers, this combination of talent manifests itself as a whole, instead of sounding completely separate with each individual track (a damaging aspect of the Stone Free tribute from 1993). The music focuses mainly on Hendrix material that was created with an obvious blues inspiration. Highlights include: "Hear My Train a Comin" by Bernard Allison, "Red House" by Vernon Reid & Michael Hill, "All Along the Watchtower" by Taj Mahal, and "Remember" by Alvin Youngblood Hart.

SNOWY WHITE - Bird of Paradise: An Anthology (2004)

Snowy White is an English guitarist, known for having played with Thin Lizzy (permanent member from 1979 to 1981) and with Pink Floyd (as a back-up player; he was first invited to tour with the band through Europe and the United States, in 1977, and during The Wall shows in 1980) and, more recently, for Roger Waters' band. He is also known for his 1983 solo effort "Bird of Paradise", which became a UK Singles Chart Top 10 hit single. White grew up on the Isle of Wight, completely self-taught as a guitarist, having received his first guitar from his parents at the age of ten. He moved to Stockholm in 1965 at the age of seventeen, spending more than a year there playing in a trio called The Train. In 1968 he purchased his signature guitar, the Gibson Les Paul Goldtop. By 1970 he made his way to London and found work as a session player and as a member of Heavy Heart. During this time he met Peter Green and the two would form a lifelong friendship (White later appeared on Green's album In the Skies). White had been recommended to Pink Floyd by Kate Bush's former manager Hilary Walker, as they were looking for an additional guitarist for the live band on the In The Flesh tour in 1977. White's solo on "Pigs On The Wing", (it appears on the 8-track version), was his first time playing for the band. During the tour, White started off the show himself by playing bass on the song "Sheep", as well as soloing during "Have a Cigar" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part VIII". In 1979 Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham, having seen White play with Pink Floyd in New York during the In The Flesh tour, approached him about joining Thin Lizzy. The collaboration with these two bands was very complicated; the invitation to rehearse the live show of The Wall for Pink Floyd, happened at the same time he was invited to become a full-time member of Thin Lizzy, with whom he recorded/co-wrote their Chinatown and Renegade albums. - wikipedia

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION - Black Country (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Black Country Communion is a devastating head-on collision between American and British rock influences a true supergroup that delivers a titanic rock experience greater than the sum of its supremely talented parts. The brainchild of producer Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin), the band combines the rock lineage and forces of legendary frontman and bass guitarist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Trapeze), master blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa, powerhouse drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner) and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Billy Idol, Alice Cooper). Named after the industrial area in Britain where both Hughes and Bonham were born and raised, Black Country Communion began rehearsing and recording tracks written by both Hughes and Bonamassa at Shangri-La Studios in early 2010.

All songs are sung by Hughes, with the exception of Song Of Yesterday and The Revolution In Me, which are both sung by Bonamassa. The two singers share vocals on Sista Jane and Too Late For The Sun. Also included is a new version of Medusa, the rock classic Hughes originally recorded with his first band, Trapeze.

DEEP PURPLE - Made In Japan (1972) [Digital Remaster 1998]

Made in Japan is a live album by English rock band Deep Purple, released in December 1972. The album was recorded over three nights in August earlier that year. The tracks on the album mostly come from their studio effort, Machine Head. The three concerts recorded were later released as Live in Japan 3-CD box set (1993). Recorded live during 15-17 August 1972 in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan. The remastered anniversary edition, issued in 1998, came with an extra cd of encores played on the tour in Japan. Judging by the thick ching that Deep Purple pull off as they enter "Highway Star" on this classic 1972 set, this band was of an era that appreciated size in sound. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar and Jon Lord's keyboards owned the evenings on the quintet's Japanese tour, giving the band a front-end density that kept drummer Ian Paice's snap heavy and loud. On tour in support of the album Machine Head, Deep Purple indulged in some great long-form jams, reaching into the 10-minute range for most of the main set and closing with the now-famed live read of "Space Truckin'." There's a reason this is regarded by many as one of hard rock's cornerstone live recordings. - amazon.com

SUSAN TEDESCHI - Just Won't Burn (1998)

The very idea of a lady slinging a guitar sets traditional blues fans swooning. But with the release of her debut, Susan Tedeschi slings, aims, and hits her target. What a talent! Singer, songwriter, player, performer, and more, the lady from Boston can do it all. Effective, she does justice to John Prine's classic "Angel from Montgomery" while making her own efforts known. Her tunes include "You Need to Be with Me," "Found Someone New," and the title cut. Leading her own band, she has what it takes to keep the boys in line while she wails away. Big Mama Thornton and Bessie Smith must be proud, and B.B. King must be impressed, since she has opened for that blues master on several occasions. Just a little taste of things to come, Just Won't Burn blazes a trail that Tedeschi is pioneering for herself and younger women in the blues world. RORY BLOCK - From the Dust (2005)

On From the Dust, slide guitar virtuosa Rory Block has both feet in the blues and at least one hand on the Bible. Her artistry provides a bridge between the spiritual hymnal and the "devil's music" as which the blues has long been branded. Original material such as the title track, "The Gate," and "David Had the Blues" evoke Scripture against the deep groove of Block's propulsive guitar playing, while "Remember" represents a personal testament to the power of faith. These tracks seem to channel the inspiration of the Reverend Gary Davis, but Block also pays tribute to more secular-minded blues masters, such as Charley Patton ("High Water Everywhere"), Muddy Waters ("I Be Bound"), Robert Johnson ("Stones in My Passageway"), and Son House ("Dry Spell Blues"), matching her command of their instrumental styles with her breathy, sensual vocals. Other material ranges from the playful affection she shows her pets on "Runaway Dog" to the seedier slice of life, "Fargo Baby." Though the recording presents Block solo and acoustic, multitracking enhances some of the arrangements, while the performances frequently carry an electric charge. - amazon.com

As a former habitué of the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene, the singer Maria Muldaur has more of a right than most to be performing a Bob Dylan covers album. This set of well-chosen and imaginatively arranged versions, released in 2006, of some of Dylan's best love songs proves Muldaur's mastery of both sultry after-hours pieces like the swaying "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and the come-hither "Lay Baby Lay" (originally, of course,"Lay Lady Lay"), as well as Dylan's less literal expressions of romance, such as "The Golden Loom", an obscurity filled with interwoven religious, pagan, and sexual imagery. - cduniverse.com

ERIC CLAPTON - MSG - Madison Square Garden, New York 1987 Tour Final (1987)

"He came to New York's Madison Square Garden on April 27 and flashed the thunderbolt guitar that got London teen-agers of twenty-three years ago scrawling graffiti: Clapton is God. If his career now spans a generation, his audience spans at least three. The Garden swarmed with all types and sizes and ages, from middle-aged parents with youngsters to well-heeled yuppies to scraggly suburban metalheads. They all rose screaming when Clapton's band: Greg Phillingames on keyboards/backing vocals, Nathan East on bass/backing vocals and the irrepressible Phil Collins on drums, kicked into his ignature leadoff tune, Robert Johnson's "Cross-roads,' which they tautened into lean, whiplash funk. Over it all screamed the throaty wail of pain that made Eric Clapton the first guitar hero." - The Nation, June 6, 1987

SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY AND THE ASBURY JUKES - The Best Of Southside Johnny And The Asbury Jukes (1992)

Although Bruce Springsteen may be the best known and most successful New Jersey working class rocker, Southside Johnny has been responsible for some fine moments as well (although admittedly, Springsteen and his guitarist Little Steven wrote many a song for Johnny). Southside Johnny and his backing band, the Asbury Jukes, are more R&B influenced than the Boss, but still know how to get a party going with sing-along rockers and tender ballads. The 19-track 1992 compilation, "Best Of Southside Johnny", is fine place to start for the newcomer, as it focuses mainly on the Jukes' stronger '70s albums. Standouts include the soulful rockers "The Fever," "Love on the Wrong Side of Town," and "Without Love." - cduniverse.com

KRIS KRISTOFFERSON - Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends: The Publishing Demos 1968-72 (2010)

Over 5 years in the making, and with the attention to detail and elaborate packaging the label is known for, LITA 050 is none other than the never-before-released 1968-1972 demos of Texas-born Renaissance man and maverick songwriting pioneer, Kris Kristofferson. With the outlaw Highwayman's full blessing, Light In The Attic is proud and honored to present Kristofferson s honest and upfront formative takes on the tunes that would eventually become part of the great American songbook. Since penning these numbers (many of which were written during the mid-to-late 60s while working as a janitor for Columbia Records in Nashville), over 500 artists including patron saint Johnny Cash, one-time lover Janis Joplin, and co-actor Bob Dylan (to name but three), have covered Kristofferson's material. While we shouldn't forget his vast commercial accomplishments as an award-winning recording artist and actor, it's these soul-stirring demos that laid the groundwork for his rough and tumble creative journey. Drop the needle and be transported into the intimate candle lit studio session like a fly on the wall. - amazon.com

PHIL COLLINS - Going Back (2010)

A deeply personal labor of love that finds the eight-time Grammy winner, Phil Collins, faithfully recreating the Motown and soul music that played such an influential role in his creative life. Due September 28th, 'Going Back' marks the 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee's first new studio album in eight years. Phil recorded the album along with three of Motown's legendary session players, aka The Funk Brothers bassist Bob Babbitt and guitarists Eddie Willis and Ray Monette. 'It shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone that I've finally made an album of my favourite Motown songs,' explains Collins. 'These songs along with a couple of Dusty Springfield tracks, a Phil Spector/Ronettes tune, and one by the Impressions make up the tapestry, the backdrop, of my teenage years. I remember it as if it was yesterday, going to the Marquee Club in London's Soho and watching The Who, The Action, and many others, playing these songs. In turn I'd go out the next day to buy the original versions. My idea, though, was not to bring anything 'new' to these already great records, but to try to recreate the sounds and feelings that I had when I first heard them. My intention was to make an 'old' record, not a 'new' record. To be able to have three of the surviving Funk Brothers play on all the tracks was unbelievable. There was one moment when they were tracking 'Heat Wave' that I experienced a wave of happiness and wonder that this was actually happening to me! I learned more about production skills and the wonderful songwriting of those concerned whilst making this album, than I have from anything else. To those pioneers... much love and gratitude.' - amazon.com

JERRY LEE LEWIS - Mean Old Man [Deluxe Edition] (2010)

Jerry Lee Lewis is the original, archetypal rock & roll rebel, and he's still pulverizing the piano keys more than half a century after he recorded "Great Balls of Fire." The terrific Mean Old Man — an even better "comeback" record than Lewis' acclaimed 2006 release Last Man Standing — follows the template of Johnny Cash's Rick Rubin-produced albums, setting Lewis loose on well-chosen standards and surrounding the legend with big-name fans. (Everyone from Eric Clapton, Merle Haggard and John Mayer to Sheryl Crow and Mavis Staples makes an appearance, along with three Rolling Stones and one Beatle.) Lewis rumbles through Stones chestnuts ("Dead Flowers," with Mick Jagger) and country classics ("Whiskey River," with Willie Nelson). His version of "Sweet Virginia," with Keith Richards, has a delicious swagger. On the ferocious rave-up "Rockin' My Life Away," Lewis shows the decades-younger Kid Rock and Slash how to do it. But Lewis is at his best when he's left alone, delivering "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and the heart-rending "Miss the Mississippi and You" in a weather-beaten croak on the deluxe CD's bonus tracks. He sounds old, all right, but in the best way: This is the voice of a man who has seen, and done, it all. - rollingstone.com

INDIGENOUS - The Acoustic Sessions (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

Mato Nanji provides the heartbeat of the band Indigenous, along with the warm dusty voice and the soaring, spirited guitar fireworks that have earned the group from South Dakota's Nakota Nation a place among roots rock's elite. Celebrating the high points and great songs from their previous releases, The Acoustic Sessions, the first-ever acoustic release from Indigenous, features all of the band's best known songs, broken down into an acoustic arrangement.

"This album is a collection of some of my favorite songs that celebrate 10 years of releasing albums, starting with Things We Do in 1998 and finishing with Broken Lands in 2008. I wanted to do something special to thank all the Indigenous fans out there for supporting us from the beginning, and for the continued support as we open a new chapter with this album. Every song that I have ever written began with the acoustic guitar, so it only felt natural to create an acoustic album. For me, everything has always been about making music. It is who I am and who I always will be. I am honored to have the opportunity to share a part of who I am with all of you." - Mato Nanji

JOHN MAYALL - Blues Express (2010)

John Mayall's long career has always been about the blues in all of its incarnations, from gutbucket country blues to the more urbane jazz side of things, and Mayall has always been professional about it all, touring with solid ensembles that stretch the genre without ever abandoning it. This revealing set features live performances drawn from seven concerts with three different bands recorded between 1972 and 1982, and while one gets the blues in different stylistic variations, it all seems like one show since Mayall is, well, John Mayall. Among the highlights are "Gone from the Canyon," recorded in 1980 in Huntington Beach, CA; "Rolling with the Blues" (featuring a Bluesbreakers reunion with Mick Taylor and John McVie), recorded in 1982 in Chicago; and a long, unwinding "Sad to Be Alone" (featuring trumpet and twin saxes), recorded in 1973 in Frankfurt, Germany. - cduniverse.com

SLADE - Slade Alive! (2006) thumbupthumbupthumbup

2006 digitally remastered two CD set, subtitled The Live Anthology, features not only the original Slade Alive! album but also Slade Alive! Volume Two, Slade On Stage and Alive At Reading for a total of 33 rockin' and stompin' Slade performances! on The first live album 'Slade Alive!' was recorded at the Command Theatre Studio in London, for just o600, and released without overdubs of any sort in March 1972. 'Vol. Two' was culled from American concert performances in the autumn of 1976 as well as British dates the following spring. The story of Slade's renaissance at the 1980 Reading Festival has long since passed into the realms of rock music folklore. It was a performance that resurrected their flagging career and several tracks were originally issued on a pair of EPs. Before the hits really starting coming, Slade showed why they were one of England's best live acts with this fevered concert recording from 1972. Set alight by plenty of stomping beats, lumbering bass, fat guitars, and Noddy Holder's hoarse vocal scream, Slade Alive! finds the lads from Wolverhampton goading on their rabid fans at every juncture ("Wan ya ta really let loose on iss one"). In return, the crowd's handclap choruses and drunken exhortations fire up the band, inspiring them to take pub rock to glam proportions ("In Like a Shot From My Gun"), make a fine mess out of a Steppenwolf classic ("Born to Be Wild"), and add a bit of feedback to John Sebastian's folk-pop ("Darling Be Home Soon"). Plus, hits like the MC5-esque "Know Who You Are" and retro-rocker "Get Down Get With It" are given proper live workouts. ~ cduniverse.com

LOWELL GEORGE

Lowell Thomas George (1945 - 1979) was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, who was the main guitarist and songwriter for the rock band Little Feat.

1979 - Thanks I'll Eat It Here
Few musicians mirror Los Angeles's tradition of rock chameleons better than Lowell George, son of a Hollywood furrier and the brilliant, short-lived auteur that shaped Little Feat's '70s sound and fury before retreating to allow a more democratic if less gripping chemistry to surface. George's hearty but lyrical, blues-rimmed voice, signature electric slide guitar, and infectious, often surreal songs defined the band--as did his production on their pivotal mid-decade albums, which convinced more than a few listeners that they were Southerners. His 1979 solo album, recorded shortly before his untimely death, mixed new originals ("Honest Man," "Cheek to Cheek," "Himmler's Ring," and the touching "20 Million Things" among them) with smart R&B covers from Allen Toussaint ("What Do You Want the Girl to Do") and Ann Peebles ("I Can't Stand the Rain"), dressed in tight brass choruses and sleek backing choruses, and fit snugly with the Feat canon. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. What Do You Want The Girl To Do 02. Honest Man 03. Two Trains 04. I Can’t Stand The Rain 05. Cheek To Cheek 06. Easy Money 07. 20 Million Things 08. Find A River 09. Himmler’s Ring 10. Heartache

1998 - Rock And Roll Doctor: A Tribute To Lowell George
As the guitarist, vocalist and primary songwriter for Little Feat, Lowell George was one of the biggest cult heroes of the '70s, creating a body of work that was deeply set within the blues tradition yet fiercely idiosyncratic and weird. It was the kind of music that earns a large cult following, but doesn't guarantee good covers, since its very quirkiness is among its most appealing traits. Basically, it's a question of matching the right artist with the right song, something that happens about half of the time on Rock N Roll Doctor (A Tribute to Lowell George). By the time the tribute record was released in 1998, his "Willin'" had long been established as a classic, the kind of song that could be covered by anyone -- along with "Dixie Chicken," it's one of the rare universal songs in George's catalog -- but Rock N Roll Doctor doesn't include either of those songs, or "Fat Man in the Bathtub." Instead, its 13 tracks are all relatively obscure, known to hardcore fans but not casual listeners, and this album is a record made by hardcore fans for hardcore fans. That doesn't mean it's necessarily all successful. Eddie Money wasn't really meant to sing the title track, and a couple of cuts, ironically including Little Feat's reworking of "Honest Man," are a bit too reverant to his memory (the group erases that negative with a storming "Cold, Cold, Cold," performed as a duet with Bonnie Raitt). But the best songs -- the Bottle Rockets and David Lindley's "Rocket in My Pocket," Jackson Browne's "I've Been the One," Taj Mahal's "Feats Don't Fail Me Now," J.D. Souther's "Roll Um Easy," Allen Toussaint & Leo Nocentelli's "Tow Trains" and especially Randy Newman & Valerie Carter's "Sailing Shoes" -- demonstrate that George's songs can live on, provided that the artists perform them with as much imagination as he wrote them with. ~ All Music Guide

RICHARD THOMPSON - Dream Attic - Limited Edition Deluxe 2CD Set (2010)

Dream Attic heralds the return of Richard Thompson, one of the most distinguished guitarists and songwriters of our time, with a magnificent collection of 13 new songs. This deluxe edition includes a bonus CD of all 13 tracks performed as acoustic demos. Penned during a short and inspired burst of creative outpouring, the songs were performed during a West Coast tour in February 2010 and the bulk of the performances that made the album come from three shows at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. "I don't think musicians playing on their own are particularly interesting, it's only when they play in front of an audience that something interesting happens" said Thompson in an interview at one of the shows. The album opens explosively with "The Money Shuffle", which Thompson says is "dedicated to our good friends on Wall Street who did such a fine job lately...it's just a mild satire". The resulting take is the antithesis of mild, building towards an absolutely scalding guitar solo. From this bracing start, the sequence rolls through traditionally rooted balladry ("Among the Gorse, Among the Grey", an intriguing, sharply-drawn character study ("Here Comes Geordie), image-filled observations ("Burning Man") and recollections of bygone eras ("Demons in Her Dancing Shoes"). "Sidney Wells" is a traditional murder ballad in modern dress, "Crimescene" is a raging reaction to the inexorable aging process. "A Brother Slips Away" is a moving elegy to friends the 61-year-old Thompson has lost within the last year and "Big Sun Falling in the River" is a bouyantly Beatlesque instant classic. - amazon.com

ERIC GALES - Relentless (2010)

Guitar World Magazine's Reader's Poll named Eric as “Best New Talent,” in 1991. After recording a second record for Elektra, all three brothers teamed up for 3The Gales Bros. “Left Hand Brand” which was recorded for the House of Blues label in 1996. Through the years, it would not be unusual to look out in the audience and see artists like Carlos Santana, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, B. B. King, and Eric Clapton, looking on with interest as Eric took his God-given talent and worked crowd after crowd into a frenzy. The new Millennium presented new opportunities for Eric and he was signed to a deal with Nightbird Records which was affiliated with the Hendrix family and distributed through MCA/Universal. Under this deal, Eric recorded the critically acclaimed record “That's What I Am” in 2001 and hit the road, mesmerizing fans around the world with his uncanny connection to his guitar. Two years ago Eric recorded the critically acclaimed CD “Crystal Vision” for Blues Bureau and set the stage for his incredible Blues Bureau follow-up, “The Psychedelic Underground.” As both an African-American left-handed guitarist of extraordinary ability and an expressive vocalist, it is natural for people to compare Eric to Hendrix but Eric has developed a unique hybrid blues/rock sound that also draws upon influences as diverse as Albert King and Eric Johnson. A unique amalgam of styles, Eric Gales stands head and shoulders among other guitarists in his genre. “Relentless” is the next logical step in this prolific artist's career as it it is deeply centered in the blues but played with the edge and aggression of a young guitar hero.

Although not all acts benefit from the spare setting, a few formerly poodle-headed headbangers make good in this unusual scenario, most notably Whitesnake (contributing a surprisingly poignant "Here I Go Again") and Night Ranger (running through a chiming take on "Don't Tell Me You Love Me"). - cduniverse.com

New recordings round out the set, including the pared-down duo of Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades paying homage to their days in Damn Yankees, a solo acoustic performance by Kip Winger, and former Mr. Big vocalist Eric Martin singing his heart out on one the band's requisite torch-song power ballads. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - Monster Blues (2001)

This promotional CD on Monster Music was a gift from the founder of Monster Cable products, "Head Monster" Noel Lee, to hi-fi sales people and industry insiders circa 2001 - 2002. Lee has many friends in the music business and has collected in this album some real gems from artists who, while not exactly mainstream, will mostly be familiar to blues afficianados. The basis for the selections is, first and foremost, the quality of the recordings, as the intended purpose of these discs was to demonstrate high-end audio systems. For this reason, most of the recordings feature somewhat simple arrangements that are recorded without a lot of processing or dubbing. The sound from this disc, especially on a nice system, is rich, detailed, and three-dimensional, making it a nice addition to any collection, and an especially good disc for showing off a system's timbral balance and depth.

"Monster Blues" features cuts from some of modern acoustic and electric blues' leading lights, including Junior Wells, Charlie Musselwhite, Duke Robillard, and Robben Ford. Ranging from Etta James' smoky "I'll Take Care of You" to the Boneshakers' raucous "Ball and Chain" to B.B. King's smooth "Mean Ole' World," the album is a good introduction to the diversity within modern-day blues; other standouts include Joe Louis Walker's "Change My Ways" and Wells' version of Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason." ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

V.A. - San Franciscan Nights: Volume 1-8 (2001)

The Hell's Honkies Tape Club was founded in May 1972 for the express purpose of archiving the music played in the San Francisco ballrooms between 1965-1971. It is more important than ever to revisit this music and pass it on to the next generation. Don't forget to play it loud. Where did this music come from? Mostly from our old reels. The music was transferred to a computer using a Delta DI/O converter. The Sons of Champlin, Country Joe and the Fish, A.B. Sky, and Aum sets all came from first generation reels of FM broadcasts. Many other sets came from now defunct radio station archives that we first contacted in the mid-1970s. Not one note of music in San Francisco Nights comes from commercially bootlegged material although a few things are from acetates.

PAUL THORN

Paul Thorn’s life story is a fascinating one -- born in Elvis’ birthplace, son of a Pentecostal preacher, boxed former world champ Roberto Duran on national TV, worked in a furniture factory, jumped out of airplanes - but with his new album ‘Pimps & Preachers’ Thorn delves into perhaps the most interesting part of his strange-but-true story. Out June 22nd on Perpetual Obscurity Records, ‘Pimps & Preachers,’ specifically the title track and Thorn-created album cover, detail the influence and pull of his two greatest mentors - his father the Pentecostal preacher and his uncle the pimp. Thorn’s upbringing as the son of a Church of God minister is well documented, but the impact of his pimp uncle is one that has yet to come to light. His uncle showed up suddenly from California when Thorn was 12 years old. ‘He was a pimp back in the day,’ Thorn says. ‘I'd never met him before, so when he came back to Mississippi he had all this street wisdom and I started hanging around him. My father was my mentor but I learned a lot from my uncle too. Everything I've accomplished has been influenced by the time I spent around these two men.’ This goes a long way toward explaining Thorn’s ability to write songs that reflect both the darkness and the light of life with an even hand. Called ‘a Southern-rock Bob Seger’ by Rolling Stone, Thorn chronicles life’s triumphs and hardships on the new album. ‘I Hope I’m Doing This Right’ displays his humble demeanor and also his view that it takes a sinner like Hank Williams to be able to write a song like ‘I Saw The Light.’ As Thorn says, ‘it was because he was an alcoholic and a screw-up that he was able to write a song that beautiful.’ Tracks like ‘Tequila Is Good For The Heart’ and ‘I Don’t Like Half The Folks I Love’ show off Thorn’s more mischievous side and his innate sense of humor. The former details Thorn’s belief that a little Cuervo can help mend a broken heart, while the latter finds Thorn expressing his occasional displeasure for the unattractive qualities of his ‘loved ones.’ ‘Pimps & Preachers’ builds on the breakout success of Thorn’s last album ‘Long Way From Tupelo.’ With that release, Thorn performed the title track on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live, wrote first person essays for NPR and Huffington Post and achieved his highest Billboard 200 chart position to date. - amazon.com

HEART - Red Velvet Car (2010)

Ann Wilson and her sister Nancy first showed the world that women can rock when their band Heart stormed the charts in the 70s with songs like Crazy On You, Magic Man, and Barracuda, and many more. They continued topping the charts through the 80s and into the 90s with huge hits like These Dreams, Alone, What About Love, If Looks Could Kill, Never, and a string of other hits that showcased the sisters enormous talents. Along the way, Heart sold more than 30 million records, had 21 Top 40 hits, sold out arenas worldwide, and had a profound influence on rock music. "Red Velvet Car" - the most personal and powerful work yet from Ann and Nancy Wilson, and their first album in 6 years - takes generations of Heart fans on what truly feels like the musical ride of a lifetime. Powerfully produced by Ben Mink, Red Velvet Car is a thoroughly electrifying song cycle of largely acoustic-based sound and a stunning album with a true and renewed sense of purpose. Ann and Nancy committed themselves to writing and recording an album that was as authentic as possible, culling from their own personal experiences and some universal themes. The result on Red Velvet Car is an album of breathtaking intimacy and honesty. - amazon.com

V.A. - Respect: The Soundtrack To The Soul Generation (2000)

Respect was the one thing that had been sorely conspicously lacking. Respect for the music. Respect for the culture that gave birth to the music. Respect for the people who made the music. Respect had been too long coming. By the late Sixties, cracks were beginning to appear in the venner of American society. Americans of African descent would be silent no more. "Respect was the need of the nation", Aretha Franklin wrote later."The song took on monumental signifiance. It became the respect woman expected from me, and men expected from women. The inherent right of all human beings". Sometimes a song, a simple song, can say so much. Much more than it's originators ever intended. - DOWNLOAD

Ann Wilson and her younger sister, Nancy Wilson first showed the world that women can rock when their band Heart stormed the charts in the '70s with hits like "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," "Barracuda," ‘Straight On,” “Even It Up,” “Kick It Out” and so many more. They continued topping the charts through the ‘80s and into the ‘90s with huge hits like “These Dreams,” “Alone,” “What About Love,” “If Looks Could Kill,” “Never,” and a string of other hits that showcased the sisters’ enormous talents as both musicians and singers. Along the way, Heart sold more than 30 million records, had 21 top 40 hits, sold out arenas worldwide, and had a profound influence on rock music. In the mid-'90s, Ann and Nancy returned to Seattle and formed The Lovemongers, with long-time collaborator Sue Ennis and performer Frank Cox. After playing a number of sold-out shows in Seattle, Lovemongers cut Led Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore" for the triple platinum soundtrack from the movie Singles, which was one of Nancy Wilson’s first musical collaborations with her husband, filmmaker (and Singles writer/director) Cameron Crowe. This was followed by their work together on Jerry Maguire, the Grammy and Oscar winning Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, and Elizabethtown. In late 2006, Nancy lent her songwriting and production talents to “P.S. I Love You,” directed by Richard LeGravenais and starring Hillary Swank (to be released in 2007. The sisters reunited as Heart in early 2002, during which time they released a critically acclaimed live concert film on DVD and CD, Heart Alive In Seattle, followed in 2004 by Jupiters Darling, the first new Heart studio album in a decade, produced by Nancy and featuring 15 original songs. Classic Rock magazine hailed Jupiters Darling as a career a tour de force, calling it “the only record you need to buy this year.” In December 2005, PBS aired a two-hour SoundStage special, showcasing songs from Jupiters Darling as well as many classic Heart hits. In 2006, Heart kicked off the touring year with a VH1 Tribute special (Heart & Friends) featuring performances by Alice in Chains (joined by GNR’s Duff McKagan and Pantera’s Phil Anselmo), Dave Navarro, Carrie Underwood, Gretchen Wilson, and Rufus Wainwright. VH1 honored Heart again at VH1 2007 Rock Honors. DirecTV broadcast a 30th anniversary concert special of Dreamboat Annie, debuting May 11 (a DVD and CD were released in October). And on September 11, the first-ever solo project by Ann Wilson (Hope & Glory) was released by Rounder Records. Many special guest artists participated in this landmark project, including Elton John, k d lang, Gretchen Wilson, Wynonna Judd, Alison Krauss, Rufus Wainwright, Deana Carter, Shawn Colvin, and Nancy Wilson. - amazon.com

GERRY RAFFERTY - Baker Street (1998)

Although he only scored a few big hits, Gerry Rafferty carved out an impressive niche during the late 1970s and early 1980s by combining well-crafted pop songs with a lushly-produced studio sound that worked country and folk elements into its atmospheric pop style. All the classics from this era, plus a variety of album tracks, are highlighted on Baker Street, a British budget-line compilation from EMI. As one might expect, it prominently features Rafferty's two biggest hits: "Baker Street" marries Steely Dan-styled lyrics about big-city desperation to a skillfully-arranged tune highlighted by some unforgettable saxophone solos, and "Right Down the Line" is a country-flavored love song that manages to be sweetly romantic without lapsing into mawkish clichés. None of the other tracks here hit the listener with the immediacy of those two classics, but it offers plenty of fine songcraft: "Get It Right Next Time" layers positive lyrics over an ethereal, pulsing keyboard memory reminiscent of 1970s-era Pink Floyd, and "Sleepwalking" is a cleverly-written tale of nocturnal loneliness built on a thick layer of percolating synthesizers. Other songs take a more rootsy approach: "City to City" is a rollicking rave-up livened up with plenty of country-style fiddle, and "The Royal Mile" underscores its nostalgic tale of train travel with a Irish folk melody. The songwriting remains engaging throughout the disc, but some of the tunes slip into blandness due to efficient but inspired performances by the backup band. Songs like "Wastin' Away" and "Days Gone Down" fail to make a strong impression because their studio-slick treatment make them sound like every other singer/songwriter from the era. Despite this occasional slip, Baker Street remains the finest portrait of Rafferty's most successful solo era, and is thus recommended to anyone interested in delving in beyond the hits. ~ cduniverse.com

TODD RUNDGREN - A Capella Tour (2001)

The studio album that inspired the tour (Acapella) was a very rewarding trip for all Todd fans. Todd's voice has always been one of his biggest assets, and an album based purely around this god given gift was well overdue. This live 2 cd set is a mixture of half Todd on his own, with either a piano or guitar (not too disimilar to the 1982 tour) and reworkings of old songs using an eleven voice choir. The choice of songs aren't too predictable, and there are a few surprises thrown in. The real standout tracks for me are, "It Wouldn't have Made Any Difference" and "Love Is The Answer". It's really great to hear "Real Man" treated in the Acapella style. The only downside is Todd's voice isn't always loud enough, and sometimes sounds a little strained. But, if you love Todd and his amazing voice, you'll love this live outing. There's plenty of Todd just talking to the audience, and even an audience participation number! - amazon.com
