THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - Peakin' At The Beacon (2000)

Recorded over 13 nights in March 2000, at New York's Beacon Theater, and marking the Allman Brothers Band's 30th anniversary, this disc captures the ABB at a crossroads. Guitarist Jack Pearson embarked on a solo career a year earlier (and was replaced by Derek Trucks) and, three months later, founding member Dickie Betts departed amidst reports of the proverbial "creative differences." You might think this turmoil would seriously detract from the ABB's Southern-rock supremacy, but while this recording can't match the legendary At Fillmore East, it's nevertheless the work of a band that's going strong. The selection of lesser-known tracks dominated by Gregg Allman compositions might leave longstanding fans feeling shortchanged, since some have been better preserved on previous live recordings. Still, there's plenty to recommend, not the least being the rousing, epic jam on Betts's "High Falls" that closes out the disc. And despite the occasional lapse in recording fidelity, you've still got Trucks's stupendous slide, the inclusion of some relative rarities (including "Every Hungry Woman"), and an opening medley of "Don't Want You No More," "It's Not My Cross to Bear," and "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" that plants one foot in the Allmans' illustrious past while pointing toward more years of crowd-pleasing virtuosity.

"Peakin' at the Beacon" was the first Allman Brothers Band album to include Derek Trucks on guitar and Oteil Burbridge on bass.

KID RAMOS - West Coast House Party (2000)

The third release from The Fabulous Thunderbirds' muscular lead guitarist is less a solo album than a forum for the obviously well-connected Kid Ramos to host a congregation of some of the country's best swing-influenced talent as they blow through an hour of prime West Coast jump blues. Between the ever-present horns and a long list of lead vocalists, including Lynwood Slim, Duke Robillard, Big Sandy, the Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson, and ex-employer James Harman, trading off the spotlight, it's tough for Ramos to assert himself as a guitarist with a distinctive sound amongst the excitement of all the guest appearances. Interestingly, the star also invites like-minded guitarists such as Little Charlie Baty, Rusty Zinn, and one of the genre's founding fathers, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown to his party, further diluting the effect of his own contributions. That minor complaint aside, this is a consistently exciting and joyously well-performed disc of upbeat jump blues, played with a one-take intensity that's contagious. The musicians sound like they're having a blast and that infectious feeling translates to the music, as this gifted crew runs through relatively obscure covers of Amos Milburn, Ray Brown, and Dave Bartholomew tunes, along with a handful of originals that sound as if they were written in the '50s, the golden age of this swinging sound. "Real Gone Lover," featuring Kim Wilson's vocal and powerful harp, is the only track where the horns sit out and the sound is stripped down to a red trio, providing the listener a chance to hear Kid Ramos tear through a tune without regard to the tight charts that are this album's feature attraction. The extensive 12-page booklet not only offers detailed track information, a must with a project that includes so many different musicians and soloists on each tune, but provides a capsule history of jump blues, adding immensely to the enjoyment of the disc. Ultimately, you won't learn much more about Kid Ramos' substantial talents as anything but a terrific bandleader and the guy you'd want in charge of the guest list to your next shindig. But it's to his credit that he selflessly hands over the focus on his own release to his talented backing band and guest stars, culminating in a winning project, astonishingly free of egos from any of its participants. - All Music.com

John Mayall's earliest recordings with Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood, Jack Bruce, Peter Green, Mick Taylor and John McVie from the sixties as well as Mayall's other recorded work through 1974 have been issued on the 4-CD box set "So Many Roads: An Anthology 1964-1974". The Decca period ranges from Mayall's first recordings, "Crawling Up A Hill" and "Mr. James," to gems with Clapton such as "All Your Love" and "Parchman Farm," to the quintessential Sixties flashback "Miss James." The third and fourth discs are devoted to Mayall's Polydor recordings from 1969 and 1974, when Mayall was essentially living and recording in America. - whereseric.com

CRY OF LOVE thumbupthumbupthumbup

Cry Of Love was an American rock band formed in 1991 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The group released their debut album in 1993 (Brother), produced by John Custer before playing the Monsters of Rock festival the following year. After this show, their frontman Kelly Holland left the group. They scored a number-one hit on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart with "Peace Pipe" in 1993. Ex-Lynch Mob and current Warrant singer Robert Mason was recruited as Holland's replacement some three years later. Together they recorded a new album in 1997 (Diamonds & Debris), but the band split shortly afterwards.

Cry of Love's debut was a near-perfect fusion of classic British hard-rock influences (read Free) and Southern rock sensibility, bringing a refreshing honesty to the dreary radio landscape of the early '90s. Vocalist Kelly Holland's gritty delivery (at times reminiscent of Billy Squier) is a perfect foil for the Hendrix flourishes of guitarist Audley Freed, resulting in stellar moments like "Highway Jones," "Pretty as You Please," and the grinding "Hand Me Down." Vying for the crown as the band's best song are the two radio staples: "Bad Thing" with its thumping bassline and effusive hand claps, and "Peace Pipe," a genuine counter-culture anthem for the '90s. cduniverse.com

THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS - Live (2001) thumbupthumbupthumbupthumbupthumbup

An institution among American blues-rockers, the Fabulous Thunderbirds have undergone a number of changes during their quarter-century-long career, not all of them positive or encouraging. With the release of this energetic live album, however, Kim Wilson and his blues posse seem to be back on track with a high-octane "greatest hits" set that revisits old T-Birds classics as well as outlining a potential roadmap for the band's future. Live was recorded at a special event in February 2000, a private party of 200 friends and fans on hand to hear the band make history with their "This Night In L.A." internet broadcast. The show was captured as one of the first high-resolution, multi-track recordings made of a live performance, and the quality shows in the CD version offered on Live (the show is also available on DVD). Live is an infectious collection of songs, a 90mph romp across the blooze-rock landscape that will leave the listener breathless and thirsting for more. The Fabulous Thunderbirds have long been a favorite on the performance circuit, their reputation built on muscular, dynamic live sets and bandleader Wilson's soulful selection of material. Live lives up to, and furthers the T-Birds' reputation as one of the best bands you'll ever see perform onstage. - blues.about.com

STRETCH - Elastique (1975)

They were wild days, back in the mid-seventies, when bands were tough, hard rocking and determined to carve out a piece of the action. Those were the days when record companies were falling over themselves in the rush to sign new outfits they hoped would compete with mega-successful outfits, like Free, Bad Company, and Deep Purple. There was plenty of money around, and loads of clubs, festivals and tours, enough to support scores of musicians who could expect to make a reasonable living, plying their trade. Throughout Germany, Britain and America, there was a rich variety of hard rock bands who relied on the power of screaming vocalists, wailing guitarists and super charged drummers to kick ass. Night after night on the road they got the fans up on their feet, cheering and waving their blazing cigarette lighters in support. There was no need to worry about the horrors to come - punk rock, disco, rap and dance music. Rock bands were kings of the road, and even the least famous could live out dreams of stardom. Among those hard working dreamers was a band called Stretch, a British outfit who recorded for the Anchor label. Their first LP was in fact "Elastique", produced by Martin Rushent, and now re-issued by Repertoire, enabling whole new generations to rediscover the power of a band once hailed as one of the hottest new names of 1975. - alexgitlin.com

This is their debut LP produced by Martin Rushent and includes promising chart hit 'Why Did You Do It'. Rated by some critics as the 'Greatest British blues and boogie band of the era', they once blew Ritche Blackmore's Rainbow off stage. Here is an opportunity to rediscover their long potential, as they roar through 'Miss Dizzy', 'Snakes Alive', 'Slip Away' and a total of ten action packed tracks from the original album.

WHISKEYTOWN - Strangers Almanac - Deluxe Edition (2008)

"Strangers Almanac" was Whiskeytown's penultimate album. The band is still steeped in the sounds of country and Gram Parsons-inspired country-rock here, but one can hear the music moving toward the pop of their final effort PNEUMONIA. Everything still centers around the voice and excellent songwriting of Ryan Adams (who was still only 22 at the time of this album's release). The song "16 Days," for example, with its breezy, open-road, country vibe and the lovely interlocking harmonies between Adams and violinist Caitlin Cary, was released as a single, and rightfully so. There is also the beautiful, melancholic weeper "Dancing With the Women at the Bar,"and a revisitiation of "Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight," which appeared on the band's debut. Adams's talent shines so brightly here, in fact, that it is little wonder he would soon be pursuing a solo career (the internal tensions in the band would hasten its dissolution as well), but "Strangers Almanac" captures this fine, short-lived, alt-country band in full effect. - amazon.com

SMOKIE - Take A Minute (2010)

Originally formed in Yorkshire, England, in 1966, Smokie hit the British pop charts several times during the late '70s with updated psychedelic pop, influenced by the band's stay on Mickie Most's Rak Records as well as the writers of most of the band's hit material, Rak's Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Vocalist Chris Norman, bassist Terry Utley, and guitarist Alan Silson had played in the Elizabethans, but formed the band Kindness in 1968, with the addition of drummer Pete Spencer. The quartet recorded many singles during the late '60s and early '70s, but failed to show any chart activity until 1975. That year, signed to Rak Records and billed as Smokey, the band hit number three in the U.K. with "If You Think You Know How to Love Me." After another Top Ten hit, "Don't Play Your Rock 'n' Roll to Me," Smokey became Smokie; during 1976, the group scored with three Top 20 hits, including the number five "Living Next Door to Alice." Smokie hit number five both in 1977 ("It's Your Life") and 1978 ("Oh Carol"), but the band's chart run ended by early 1980, and following 1982's Midnight Delight, they disbanded. Both Spencer and Norman continued to work at Rak during the '80s, writing hits for several groups; they re-formed Smokie in 1988, resurfacing with the LP My Heart Is True. Two more albums, All Fired Up and Greatest Hits Live, followed, with the group remaining active throughout the 1990s, issuing new material as well as a number of hits collections. ~ answers.com

CHET ATKINS - Certified Guitar Player (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Chester Burton Atkins (1924 – 2001), better known as Chet Atkins, was an American guitarist and record producer who created, along with Owen Bradley, the smoother country music style known as the Nashville sound, which expanded country's appeal to adult pop music fans as well. Atkins's picking style, inspired by Merle Travis, Django Reinhardt, George Barnes and Les Paul, brought him admirers within and outside the country scene, both in the United States and internationally. Atkins produced records for Perry Como, Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, Eddy Arnold, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves, Jerry Reed, Skeeter Davis, Connie Smith, Waylon Jennings and others. Among many honors, Atkins received 14 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, nine Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year awards, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

"Certified Guitar Player" is a concert-tribute to Chet Atkins, performed by Chet and many giants in the music business: Mark Knopfler, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Michael McDonald, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson, backed by Nashville's premier studio musicians. Great music, great fun, and a moving experience as a joyful document created about Chet Atkins' importance in the history of music, and to everyone on that stage.

ANNE McCUE - Broken Promise Land (2010)

What isn't mysterious is McCue's musical talent and range. She was voted the Roots Music Association's Folk Artist of the Year in 2008, performed in a Jimi Hendrix tribute at the 2007 International Guitar Festival and was included in the Four Decades of Folk Rock box set alongside the likes of Bob Dylan and Wilco. Heart's Nancy Wilson has described her as "my Aussie clone," while Americana icon Lucinda Williams had this to say: "Initially, her stunning voice hooked me in. Then I got inside the songs. The first chance I got, I went to see her perform . . . I was floored! The combination of her tomboyish beauty mixed with the precision and assertiveness with which she approached the guitar, her surrounding languid and earthy vocals created an intoxicating blend." The new, self-produced album is one that she has long wanted to make. Combining heartfelt songwriting with gritty guitar playing, the record harkens back to McCue's breakout Roll release, although she says that the new disc's sound is even more raw than its predecessor. While earlier albums covered a range of roots-rock styles, Broken Promise Land focuses on McCue's hard-charging "cosmic biker rock" sound. - cduniverse.com

AL JARDINE - A Postcard From California (2010)

lan Charles "Al" Jardine is a founding member of top-selling American music group The Beach Boys, a guitarist and occasional lead vocalist. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Jardine left the touring version of the Beach Boys in 1998 after Carl Wilson died of lung cancer, but remains a member of the Beach Boys corporation Brother Records. He tours with his Endless Summer Band, containing many of the stage musicians who toured with The Beach Boys, including Billy Hinsche of Dino, Desi and Billy, Ed Carter, Bobby Figueroa, and Jardine's son Matt Jardine, who sang with the Beach Boys during much of their later career. In the fall of 2006, Jardine joined the band of Brian Wilson for a short tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of Pet Sounds. In March 2008, Jardine settled a suit brought against him by Mike Love and the estate of Carl Wilson regarding use of the "Beach Boys" name.

Jardine released his first full-length solo studio album, A Postcard from California, in June 2010. DEVON ALLMAN'S HONEYTRIBE - Torch (2006)

There's pressure to perform when your last name is Allman, and Devon Allman does that and more on the debut album with his band Honeytribe. The son of legendary Allman Brothers' singer and organist Gregg Allman, Devon shows the influences of both his father (guttural voice) and late Uncle Duane (lead guitar straight out of the blues). Just barely 30 years old, Allman has encircled himself with first-rate musicians who have latched on to the jazzy, jam band elements of the Allmans and their brethrens in Gov't Mule. Though Allman's vocals aren't as silky or golden-toned as his old man, he has an ear for a solid Southern riff, most evident by bluesy efforts like "Mercy Mercy" and the Z.Z. Top takeoff, "Why You Wanna Bring Me Down." But there are more serene highlights on the record, as well: the love song "No Woman, No Cry" and the instrumental "511 Texas Avenue," a solo acoustic tribute to his late grandparents that wouldn't be a misfit on Eat a Peach." - amazon.com

JOHNNY NASH - I Can See Clearly Now: Johny Nash's Greatest Hits (1989)

Singer/songwriter/producer Johnny Nash's million-seller "I Can See Clearly Now" did more to bring the reggae music sound into the mainstream than any other single record up to that point. To be sure, there were previous reggae hits (Millie Small's "My Boy Lollipop," Desmond Dekker & the Aces's 1969 hit "Israelites"), but Nash's buoyant, breezy, optimistic classic proved to be a phenomenal record holding the number one pop position for four weeks and going to number one adult contemporary on Billboard's charts in fall 1972. Houston,TX, native Nash had been recording in Jamaica for some years before having his biggest hit. On the I Can See Clearly Now album, Nash used members of Bob Marley and the Wailers and recorded several Marley songs. The song "I Can See Clearly Now" hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 4, 1972.

RONNIE EARL AND THE BROADCASTERS - Spread The Love (2010)thumbupthumbupthumbup

Legendary blues guitarist Ronnie Earl was born Ronald Horvath, in Queens, New York, on March 10, 1953. He didn’t pick up his first guitar until twenty years later, beginning a musical journey that took him to the sides of some of the most respected and talented blues musicians in the world. Inspired by Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Freddie King, Otis Rush, Big Walter Horton and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Ronnie quickly developed his six-string skills, playing with an intensity that hasn’t cooled in more than 35 years of playing. Earl, who has been hailed by musicians and critics alike as one of the premier blues guitarists of his genre, has played with such greats as Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Earl King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and The Allman Brothers as well as several of the musicians that inspired him early on. From 1979 to 1988, Earl played with a number of groups including Roomful of Blues before forming his own band, The Broadcasters, named after the first Fender Telecaster guitar called the Broadcaster which was distributed in 1950. In 2008 the Broadcasters celebrated twenty years as a band. The current Broadcasters are: Dave Limina on the Hammond B3 and piano, Lorne Entress on drums, and Jim Mouradian on bass. They have played together for eleven years and are currently enjoying playing for inspired audiences at a series of sold out shows.

An all instrumental blues guitar release by one of the most acclaimed guitarists of our time. With The Broadcasters, his band of over 20 years, Ronnie's latest release shows him to be one of the most soulful blues/soul/jazz guitarists working today. He plays with spellbinding intensity and soul and has a legion of fans that await each new release. - amazon.com

CLARE FREE - Be Who You Are (2010)

Recorded in Buckinghamshire, ‘Be Who You Are’ lays bare in ten self penned songs an impressive talent in Clare Free. If you’re not familiar with the name, take a look at her striking website at www.clarefree.co.uk and you’ll then realise why she sounds so good. She’s performed over the years with a number of high profile names, including Larry Garner, Matt Schofield, Dana Gillespie, and even retro-punk violinist Nigel Kennedy as well as (!) Rolf Harris. As a guitar player, Clare knows her way around the blues and is definitely the mistress of her Stratocaster. Her band, with Hannah Cope on bass and backing vocals, Rhys Friery, keyboards and drummer Pete Headley are all fine musicians, to. From a somewhat refreshing female standpoint, Clare’s lyrical craft often takes you beyond the blues so it’s nice to have all her lyrics legibly laid out in the liner notes. There is deep-felt passion in such fine songs as ‘My Everything’, ‘Is This Love I Feel’ and the achingly nostalgic ‘We Were Seventeen’. The final song, ‘We’ll Have The Time of Our Lives’ perhaps sums up her philosophy; ‘We can go any place we choose/the wind in our hair will blow away our blues/and we may not be millionaires/but that helps me see the good things that we’ve got…’ And this album’s one of them. Roll on, Clare Free – you’re terrific. - bluesmatters.com

JANE BOGAERT - 5th Dimension (2010)

Right after her first piano lesson at the age of 10 years, Jane Bogaert wrote into her school satchel: "Music is my life". And until today, music is still the most important thing to her. The former Miss Switzerland actually now has really reached other dimension with the new album "Fifth Dimension". This was already obvious whilst being educated at the conservatoire in Biel and the school of musicals in Munich where she took singing lessons. Her voice has matured during a couple of first tries as a solo singer and back-up jobs for A-Ha, Thin Lizzy, Al Jarreau, David Hasselhoff, Toto Cutugno, Claudia Jung, Roland Kaiser or Uwe Ochsenknecht. As a result, she later worked for Al Bano & Romina Power and as a result, in the end took over Romina's parts completely. Even more inspired and infected, Jane together with Robert Papst (Dominoe) and Guenther Skitschak (Dominoe) wrote the songs for "Fifth Dimension" and engaged a couple of guests such as Jeff Scott Soto (W.E.T., Journey, Talisman, Malmsteen), Joe Lynn Turner (Deep Purple, Rainbow, Hughes-Turner Project), John Edwards (Status Quo), Matt Beck (Rod Stewart) and Charlie Morgan (Elton John) to help her with the realization of the record. - cduniverse.com

.38 SPECIAL - Anthology (2001)

Thirty Eight Special are the Southern rock band formed by Donnie Van Zant and Don Barnes. They are perhaps their best known hits "Caught up in You" and "If I'd Been the One". The band were formed by the brother of Ronnie Van Zant, founder of Lynyrd Skynyrd and had a similar, Southern rock sound. Their first two albums were not big sellers, but the introduction of a harder rock sound attracted a broader audience. An extensive touring schedule helped spread the word and when 1981's Wild Eyed Southern Boys was released to good reviews, fans responded by taking the album to platinum sales. This began a run of gold or platinum-selling albums and top forty hits, with "Caught up in You", "If I'd Been the One" and "Back Where you Belong" amongst them. Rock and Roll Strategy was the last of the run as the Eighties drew to a close and the band's sound fell from favour. They still tour, playing clubs in Southern states. - amazon.com

ALBERT CASTIGLIA - Keeping On (2010)

For those of us who know Albert Castiglia, there is no doubt in our minds that he is a great guitarist. In fact he has been a great guitarist for quite a while now, something that ZZ Top and Elvin Bishop know all to well, with him being the opening act for the legendary group and artist. But over the years something else has been developing that Castiglia is now becoming great at, and that is songwriting, which is now more evident than ever on his new release, "Keepin On". "Keepin On" consists of 12 Tracks and as with his 2008 CD, "These are the Days", 5 of them are Originals and mighty good originals they are, laced with meaningful lyrics and drenched with the magic of his guitar. Of the 7 Covers that are on "Keepin On", I don't think Albert Castiglia could of made any better choices, as all fit just perfectly to his style, especially "Till I Fell In Love With You" a Dylan Classic and "Goin' Upstairs" a Hooker Classic, to name a few. All the Covers were respectfully interpreted to perfection and would certainly make the Originators of those Covers proud. - bluesundergroundnetwork.com

LITTLE AL THOMAS featuring THE DEEP DOWN FOOLS - Not My Warden (2010)

Blues vocalist Little Al Thomas is a household name on the Chicago blues scene but otherwise obscure despite having appeared with the Bobby Bland Revue in the fifties, playing with Lacy Gibson in the 70s and making a couple of albums in the nineties. The Deep Down Fools are a four piece band that really delivers; the bass player stays right in the groove and the Hammond B3 player is funky as hell, as are the real blues drummer and impressive guitarist/leader John Edelmann who took up blues guitar after hearing BB King's Live At Cook County Jail. Later, he spent time in Chicago working with Hubert Sumlin, Sam Lay and AC Reed before meeting up with Little Al Thomas and eventually forming The Deep Down Fools. It's great to hear Little Al Thomas and The Deep Down Fools and even better to know that there are still musicians out there who can come up with some truly fresh and exciting contemporary blues music. This band works and, they've made one of the best albums of the year. - redlick.com

FREE CREEK - Music From Free Creek (1973)

"Music From Free Creek" is an album from a series of 1969 "super session" recordings by Free Creek, a group composed of a number of internationally renowed musical artists of the time, including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keith Emerson, Mitch Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt. As described by one reviewer, "Music From Free Creek is a super session album, where the musicians are playing for the fun of it, and that comes across. The material doesn't get bogged down in 'names'; it just flows. - wikipedia

The producers weren't able to get all the necessary permits from all the record-companies to use their artists, and consequently some of the artists appear under pseudonyms. For example 'King Cool' is Eric Clapton, and 'A. N. Other' is Jeff Beck. Other big names are Keith Emerson (from Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Linda Ronstadt, Todd Rundgren, Mitch Mitchell (from Jimi Hendrix Experience), Chuck Rainey, Doctor John, etc.

TRACKS:
01. Cissy Strutt (Jeff Beck Session) 02. Freedom Jazz Dance (Keith Emerson session) 03. Sympathy for the Devil (Harvey Mandel Session) 04. Mother Nature's Son (Keith Emerson session) 05. RICHARD THOMPSON - The Life and Music of Richard Thompson [Box set] (2006)

For Richard Thompson fanatics (and those who admire the brilliant songwriter and virtuoso guitarist tend to be quite ardent about him), this five-disc set of obscurities, outtakes, live performances, and previously unreleased material is the holy grail. Earlier releases from Free Reed found the label mining the riches of British folk-rock from the likes of Fairport Convention (which featured Thompson in its most popular incarnation), but here they've hit the mother lode. This isn't the place for a newcomer to start with Thompson, as other "best-of" anthologies and career-spanning compilations might provide a better introduction. Instead, this is a treasure trove that will offer discovery for even the most devoted fan. Each disc has a theme, epic ballads, discarded songs, the essential canon, with the disc of cover versions particularly fascinating. From performance tapes, Thompson makes everything from the Who's "Substitute" and Squeeze's "Tempted" to the traditional "Danny Boy" and "Shenandoah" sound like his own. The expansive selection illuminates Thompson as an artist of great range and subtlety, humor and heart, from the intimacy of his solo acoustic performances to galvanizing, electrically charged renditions of masterpieces such as "Shoot Out the Lights," "For Shame of Doing Wrong," and "Calvary Cross." An accompanying 168-page book provides biographical context and exhaustive annotation (though somehows seem to tag "Shoot Out the Lights" as solo acoustic when it's plainly full-band electric).

A 5-CD celebration of the life and music of Richard Thompson featuring: classic, rare and previously-unreleased recordings from his entire career. Comprising five themed CDs, over 90 tracks... The set has been compiled with unprecedented access to Richard's own archives and major Thompson collectors worlwide. While it features the classic Richard Thompson songs, as well as recordings never heard before by even the most devoted of fans, the set is made up almost entirely of previously unreleased and extremely hard to find recordings. - amazon.com

CRAZY HORSE - The Complete Reprise Recordings 1971-'73 (2005)

In 2005, Rhino Handmade, the Internet-only mail-order specialty label dedicated to limited-edition reissues from the vaults of Warner Bros. Records, released Scratchy: The Complete Reprise Recordings, by Crazy Horse. The two-disc set contained Crazy Horse's two albums for the Warner subsidiary Reprise Records, Crazy Horse (1971) and Loose (1972), on the first CD, with the second CD containing rehearsals and outtakes, plus two tracks recorded by the group in its '60s doo wop days as Danny & the Memories. Only 2500 copies of the set were printed, and they sold out quickly. So, the British branch of Warner Bros. decided to re-create the album for conventional retail, minus the Danny & the Memories tracks, as The Complete Reprise Recordings 1971-'73. Crazy Horse went on to make several additional albums for other labels over its career while, of course, gaining its greatest recognition as a backup band for Neil Young... - All Music Guide

DR. HOOK - Greatest Hits (And More) (1987)

Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show is a band with a country flavour which continues to occupy an place in the affections of many, loved for their humour and crazy stage shows. Though best known for their series of radio-friendly hits of the 1970s which include "Sylvia's Mother", "Sexy Eyes" and "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman" much of the material for their first two albums was written by the renown humorist Shel Silverstein (who also wrote Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue"). Indeed, "Sylvia's Mother" was a well veiled parody of a heartbreak song, a fact missed by many of the fans who propelled it into the top five in the summer of 1972. The fortunes of the band were mixed and in spite of their chart topping success the name of their third album proved unfortunate: the self penned Belly Up (1973) did well, but not well enough to prevent them filing for bankruptcy in 1974. Billed as just Dr. Hook this time, they returned in 1975 with Bankrupt and continued to score hits with this and subsequent albums. Unfortunately for the band, the more commercial direction they now found themselves following was not appreciated by Ray Sawyer, the eye-patch-wearing frontman generally acknowledged as "Dr. Hook", and he left in 1983. Without him, the group strled on for a while, but gave up in 1985. Sawyer reclaimed the Dr. Hook name and started to tour as Dr. Hook featuring Ray Sawyer in the 1990s. - amazon.com

SAM BROWN - The Very Best Of Sam Brown (2005)

Sam Brown first shot to fame with the massive UK No. 4 hit "Stop" in 1989. The album of the same name went on to sell over 2.5 million copies worldwide. It also spawned the UK Top 15 hit "Can I Get A Witness?". Her follow-up album "April Moon" yielded the single "Kissing Gate", charting at No. 23. Above all, Brown is an outstanding musician with a voice so distinct and powerful that it didn't take long for fellow musicians to recognize. She was a backing singer on Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell" album and worked with David Gilmour on his 2003 acoustic concert tour throughout the UK & Europe. In 1994, she was a guest with future husband Jools Holland's Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and became their vocalist in 2000.

GROUNDHOGS - The Best Of The Groundhogs (1997)

Though the 1960s and early-'70s U.K. blues and boogie band the Groundhogs never achieved widespread fame, this best-of shows them to be a solidly rocking outfit most at home with workmanlike interpretations of the urban blues of Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. A lean three-piece who concentrated more on feel and groove than their jazzier contemporaries Cream, the Groundhogs' evolution into one of the many sociallyand politically aware bands of the era is documented here on cuts such as the psychedelic-sounding "Strange Town" and the prog-rock "Rich Man, Poor Man". "Earth Is Not Room Enough" is a fine example of eccentric '60s boogie, and the always-stirring "Amazing Grace" features the band's much-lauded guitarist Tony McPhee at his most expressive. - amazon.com

COLOSSEUM - Live05 (2007) thumbupthumbupthumbup

Once more, the extraordinary musicians of COLOSSEUM succeeded to release an also extraordinary and first-class live-album. During the Summer tour of 2005 Miles Ashton, the great live sound engineer who runs his own studio in Watford, recorded all of Colosseum's concerts to 24-track digital. So now, you can enjoy a real complete COLOSSEUM-Concert with the fanstastic voice of Chris Farlowe, the virtuosics Clem Clemspon, Dave Greenslade and Barbara Thompson plus the outstanding Bassplayer Mark Clarke and drumming legend Jon Hiseman. LYNYRD SKYNYRD - Live From Freedom Hall (2010) thumbupthumbupthumbup

With the dust and the haze of the decades cleared, it’s now apparent that Lynyrd Skynyrd in their original configuration were one of the greatest rock bands to come out of the South, or anywhere in America for that matter, and the band’s legacy, based around classic songs like “Sweet Home Alabama” and the iconic, ever-unwinding “Free Bird,” is assured. Skynyrd were also one of the most haunted of American bands as well, and the litany of deceased members is a long one original lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines died in 1977, guitarist Allen Collins died in 1990, bassist Leon Wilkeson died in 2001, replacement bassist Ean Evans died in 2009, as did keyboardist Billy Powell.

"Live From Freedom Hall" not only captures the band in its most natural state – on stage- but is also one of the last concerts to be recorded with longtime members Billy Powell and Ean Evans, both of whom passed away last year. The release is a tribute to and a celebration of Skynyrd.

SHAWN PITTMAN - 2010 x 2

2010 - Too Hot
Shawn's delicious use of the spare 'less is more' guitar style, which is frequently displayed, by one of Texas's premier guitarists,Jimmy Vaughan, allows the listener to appreciate the skilful artistry of Shawn's individual approach to Texas blues. He raises the quality bar with each successive album release. Here, we find him recording with a very fine group of Italian musicians who have backed him on his recent successful European tour. Speaking to Shawn he informed me that the album came about after Tano had heard him perform the Jerry McCain number "Too Hot" during one of the concerts on the tour and heasked Shawn if he and the band would go into the studio and record the number as it had become a particular favourite of his. So, as a consequence of this request Shawn and the rest of the band went into the Electric Honey Studios on the ninth of November two thousand and nine which also just happened to be their only day off in the middle of the tour; they recorded not only the Jerry McCain number but fourteen others as well such as Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Years", Lazy Lester's "The Same Thing Could Happen To You", another excellent choice is Jerry McCain's "Geronimo Rock", and Larry Williams's "Slow Down", these are but a few of the numbers which make up this album. - cduniverse.com

2010 - Triple Troubles (with the Moeller Bros)
Shawn Pittman is one of the most popular and creative roots artists to emerge in recent years. On this newest CD Triple Troubles, Shawn is teamed up by two old times friends, The Moeller Brothers, Johnny on guitar and Jay on drums, from The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Since he first started the Shawn Pittman Band sixteen years ago, Shawn's career has been marked by one triumph after another. He's gone from performing at a tiny Dallas or Austin saloon to opening for B.B. King. Is nationally and internationally acclaimed as one of the most compelling artists in the Blues. Not surprising, given his innate charisma and skills as a supremely talented guitarist & vocalist, and engaging songwriter. This subsequent output on the past 8 CDs has only served to further establish Shawn as one of the leading younger bluesmen on the scene today! Check out those new killer recordings ! - cdbaby.com

SANDI THOM

2006 - "Smile...It Confuses People" @320
"Smile... It Confuses People" is the first studio album by Scottish singer Sandi Thom, released in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland on June 5, 2006 (see 2006 in music) by RCA Records. The album is a mix of pop and folk, predominantly written by Thom herself alongside Tom Gilbert. The album produced Thom's first number-one single on the UK Singles Chart, Ireland Singles Chart and in Australia, giving her song the record of longest period at number-one in Australia for 2006 and becoming the highest selling single for 2006. The album also generated another two singles but failed to chart successfully. "Smile... It Confuses People" was certified platinum by BPI selling three hundred thousand copies around the UK. - wikipedia
TRACKS:
01. When Horsepower Meant What It Said 02. I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (with Flowers in My Hair) 03. Lonely Girl 04. Sunset Borderline 05. Little Remedy 06. Castles 07. What If I'm Right 08. Superman 09. Human Jukebox 10. Time

2008 - "The Pink And The Lily" @320
2008 sophomore album from the Scottish singer/songwriter. The Pink &The Lily is an album that charts Sandi's growth as a singer and as a young woman with tracks tackling deep subjects such as global warming and the corporate career path to more jovial subjects like partying too hard; a subject that spawned the song 'Saturday Night' after her Manager thought she was partying and drinking too much! The classic yet contemporary sounding record is drenched in nostalgia with a recurrent theme of a less complicated life when times were easier, like the golden age of movies on 'The Last Picturehouse' and her own childhood on 'Mirrors'. The first single from the album; the funky, zydeco influenced 'The Devil's Beat', is Sandi Thom at her best. The song, despite its upbeat tempo, is actually about one of the more serious themes on the album; global warming. - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. Devil's Beat 02. Shape I'm In 03. Wounded Hearts 04. Saturday Night 05. Beatbox 06. Remote Control Me 07. Success's Ladder 08. Mirrors 09. Music in My Soul 10. The Pink and the Lily 11. I'm a Human Being 12. The Last Picturehouse 13. My Ungrateful Heart

2010 - "Merchants And Thieves" @VBR
2010 album from the British singer/songwriter. Merchants And Thieves is an album that brilliantly reflects how Sandi has opened up a whole new channel for her creativity. Retaining her innate feeling for a powerful melody and a trenchant lyric, the record adds the new Blues sensibility that visitors to her famously powerful gigs have sensed for themselves in recent months. Thom was encouraged to bring her long-held love of such heritage music to the fore, and her respect for such guitar giants as Peter Green, as fate called for her to sit in as vocalist with Joe Bonamassa, when the modern-day Blues titan lost his voice. There's no better endorsement than his presence on the album as both singer and guitarist on the album's lead track, 'This Ol' World.' - amazon.com
TRACKS:
01. Maggie McCall 02. Runaway Train 03. Gold Dust 04. Let It Stay 05. Merchants And Thieves 06. Show No Concern 07. This Ol' World (Featuring Joe Bonamassa) 08. The Sadness 09. Heart Of Stone 10. Ghost Town 11. Belly Of The Blues 12. This Ol' World (Sunset Marquis Version Featuring Joe Bonamassa)

IRON MAIDEN - The Final Frontier (2010)

The new studio album from the legendary metal band! At 76 minutes and 34 seconds, it is the band's longest studio album to date, and with an average song length of 7:59 it is Iron Maiden's longest album by song length. It will be their first album since the release of "A Matter of Life and Death" in 2006, the longest gap to date between two consecutive Iron Maiden studio albums. Melvyn Grant, a long-time contributor to the band's artwork, created the cover art for the album.

The album was reviewed by Classic Rock on July 23, being praised as "densely-layered and substantial" as well as "beautifully paced and disarmingly complex". V.A. - Country Got Soul - Volume One & Two (2003/04)

2003 - Volume One:
2003 compilation highlights the mid to late 60s country scene when a more soulful, funky sound emerged with artists like Larry Jon Wilson, Razzy, Charlie Rich, Eddie Hinton, Tony Joe White, Travis Wammack, Donnie Fritz, Delaney & Bonnie, Reuben Howell, Jim Ford, & more. It might sound a little out, if you try and sit down and think about it. Country guys laying down serious soul music. White guys, with pick-ups laying down gospel soul claps, and syncopated horn lines. But it is all in here. And it isnt cheesy or strange, if you are to really think about it. This music is strange, joyous, sometimes corny (The Post 73'cuts) but genuinely soulful documents of a non homogenized American musical landscape. It helps us all to remember that Muscle Shoals studio had a mess of white dudes laying it down with Aretha, and Otis. So have faith. In the vein of Bobby Womack, Dusty Springfield, Charlie Rich, Booker T, and even Lambchop on some soulful excursion. - amazon.com

The Feeling Is Tight - Bobby Hatfield 15. If Love Was Money - Dan Penn

2004 - Volume Two:
Volume 2 follows the hugely successful and criticially acclaimed original 'Country Got Soul'; and was also voted one of the 10 compilations of the year by Mojo. - amazon.com

RORY BLOCK - Confessions Of A Blues Singer (1998)

"Confessions of a Blues Singer" is a confessional indeed; in addition to ten top-rate blues and blues-oriented tracks (including a rendition of "Titanic (When That Great Ship Went Down)" that is the perfect antidote to Celine Dion overexposure), there are two testimonial songs, epic in length, that close the disc. "Mother Marian," the first of these, is in the best folk-ballad style, chronicling the years of a woman who clearly had quite an influence on Block's life. The second, "Life Song," is similar, except it's a testimonial of Block herself, dealing with two central themes: music and family. While these two tracks lack some of the energy in the shorter, more active blues tunes, a performer of Block's talent may be forgiven the impulse to wax poetic once in a while, especially when the results are as good as this. And Block's love and respect for the traditional blues that has been her stock in trade is evident on every note of this CD. - amazon.com

DELANEY & BONNIE & FRIENDS

Delaney & Bonnie – later called Delaney & Bonnie & Friends – was a rock/soul revue fronted by husband-and-wife singer/songwriters Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett. Delaney Bramlett began his career in 1964 with two unsuccessful 45s recorded in Los Angeles. He became acquainted with Leon Russell and his "Oklahama Mafia", and became a "Shindog", the group appearing on the TV show "Shindig". In 1967 he met and married Bonnie Lynn, a former Ikette. The duo signed with Stax and in 1969 supported the first part of the Blind Faith's U.S. tour. Subsequently, Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Dave Mason declared that they were the "best group in the world". Backed by an excellent group with their "Friends":- Russell, Carl Radle (ex Colours), Jim Gordon, Bobby Whitlock, Jim Price, Bobby Keys, Sandy Konikoff, Jim Keltner, etc. Delaney & Bonnie were suddenly very popular and toured constantly. Their records mix rock, white gospel, soul and blues with a solid rhythm section. On Tour, with Eric Clapton and Dave Mason is one of their best efforts, while the "Friends" in Motel Shot included Gram Parsons, Duane Allman and Ben Benay (ex Goldenrod). The duo's demise was no doubt due to an erratic management (they moved from Stax to Elektra to Atlantic and then to CBS in three years) together with the fact that when Leon Russell left he took their backing group for Joe Cocker's "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. In 1972, the Bramletts split up and both went solo. The records of Delaney are out of this books scope, while Bonnie went on to work with Southern rock groups and released several albums on Capricorn Records with members of Allman Brothers Band. Jim Price and Bobby Keys later became the horn section for the Rolling Stones and Whitlock, Radle and Jim Gordon formed Derek and the Dominos with Eric Clapton and Duane Allman.

1969 - Far From the Madding Crowd
Delaney and Bonnie and Friends made a brief Anglo-Danish tour in December 1969, which Eric Clapton and George Harrison joined as anonymous guitarists. This is one of the final shows, at Copenhagen's Falkoner Theatre on 12 Decmber (not the 10th as stated on the cover). It is part of a two-disc set, with a DVD of black and white concert footage forming the other half. A clear recording of a rare concert with George Harrison.

BONNIE BRAMLETT - Sweet Bonnie Bramlett (1973)

Bonnie Bramlett is an American singer known for her distinctive vocals in rock and pop music. This began in the mid 1960s as a backing singer, forming the husband-and-wife team of Delaney & Bonnie, and continuing to the present day as a solo artist. Bramlett started her musical career at the age of fifteen as a backup singer for blues acts such as Fontella Bass, Albert King, and Little Milton. She made history as the first Caucasian female to sing with Ike and Tina Turner as one of the "Ikettes". She eventually moved to Los Angeles, where she met fellow singer Delaney Bramlett in 1967 at a bowling alley gig for his band, The Shindogs. They were married within the week. The duo signed with Stax Records and became known as Delaney & Bonnie, becoming the first white artists among R&B artists such as Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, John Lee Hooker, and Booker T. and the MGs. They soon toured Europe with British rock legend Eric Clapton. With frequent drop-in performances by other noted musicians like Duane Allman, George Harrison, and Dave Mason, the group became known as Delaney & Bonnie & Friends.

Bonnie Bramlett continued her career as a solo songwriter and recording artist. She released "Sweet Bonnie Bramlett" in 1973, backed by The Average White Band.

SIMON & GARFUNKEL - Old Friends (1997)

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were initially inspired by the Everly Brothers and under the name Tom And Jerry enjoyed a hit with 'Hey Schoolgirl'. The duo reunited in 1964 for Wednesday Morning 3AM, which included an acoustic reading of 'The Sound Of Silence'. Producer Tom Wilson made the presumptuous but prescient decision to overdub 'Sound Of Silence' with electric instrumentation and an album titled after the million-selling single was rush-released early in 1966. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme had a varied mood from the grandly serious 'For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her' to the bouncy '59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)'. The duo contributed Mrs. Robinson to the soundtrack of the 1968 film, The Graduate. That same year saw the release of Bookends, a superbly-crafted work. In 1969 the duo released the celebrated Bridge Over Troubled Water. One of the best-selling albums of all time, the work's title track became a standard with its lush, orchestral arrangement and contrasting tempo. While at the peak of their commercial success, the duo became irascible and their partnership abruptly ceased. Since then there have been sporadic reunions, most notably The Concert In Central Park.

"Old Friends" is a boxed set of Simon and Garfunkel songs, released in 1997. The three-disc anthology collects most of the duo's best-known works, and also includes previously unreleased outtakes. Some of these outtakes subsequently appeared on both the reissues of Simon and Garfunkel's five studio albums as well as the later boxed set The Columbia Studio Recordings (1964-1970).

"Spirit of '76", released in May 1975, was the first of four albums that Spirit would (initially) release for Mercury Records. Though all four albums were greatly influenced by the time that Randy California spent living in Hawaii, this album bears that influence more than any of the others (aside from maybe Future Games). Though it was largely ignored upon its first release, many fans consider it to be one of Spirit's best albums. These tracks are arguably the most fluid and satisfying statement by the Randy California/Ed Cassidy fronted lineup of the band.

Although it shares many tracks with 1999's "Heavy Picks", including, of course, the Georgia-based bluesman's ominous '86 hit, "Smoking Gun", DEFINITIVE COLLECTION tops that set by extending its reach to '05 with the wistful "Poor Johnny," making it the more comprehensive anthology. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - Concert For George Harrison (2003)

Concert for George presents an all-star cast paying tribute to George Harrison a year after his death, on November 29, 2002, at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Eric Clapton served as musical director and contributes many fine performances of Harrison’s most beloved compositions (“If I Needed Someone,” “Beware of Darkness”). Paul McCartney teams with Clapton for a dramatic interpretation of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” begins “Something” on ukulele, an instrument that McCartney claims was of great amusement to Harrison, and remains in top form, putting great emotion behind “All Things Must Pass.” Ringo Starr belts out “Photograph,” his Harrison-penned hit, and “Honey Don’t,” a Carl Perkins number once performed with the Beatles. This iTunes edition includes “Horse to the Water,” an impressive unreleased original penned by George and his son Dhani, and performed by Sam Brown and Jools Holland. Harrison’s interest in Indian music is emphasized with performances by his mentor Ravi Shankar’s daughter Anoushka, who collaborates with Jeff Lynne for a faithful reading of “The Inner Light.” It’s clearly a night put together with great love and affection for a much missed musician.

PAVLOV'S DOG - Collection (2004)

thumbupPAVLOV'S DOGthumbup is the kind of band you love or you hate, everything is black or white, there are no tones of gray, especially because of the peculiar voice of their lead singer David Surkamp, who sounds almost like Geddy Lee with extra helium singing in the style of Edith Piaff (he has the typical trembling voice of French singers). It took me a couple of months to get used to their vocals, but once I did, became a fan. There are two versions about the birth of the band, according to Mike Safron, he and Siegfried Carver decided to create PAVLOV'S DOG, but the best known version is that they started from the ashes of a small band named "HIGH ON A SMALL HILL" where David Surkamp and Rick Stockton played. But the important thing is that the original lineup was formed in St. Louis Missouri by David Surkamp (vocals and guitar), David Hamilton (keyboards), Doug Rayburn (mellotron and flute), Mike Safron (drums and percussion), Rick Stockton (bass guitar), Siegfried Carver (violin) and Steve Scorfina (lead guitar) between 1972 and 1973.

This all-you-can-fit-on-two-disks compilation from Australian label Fruit Gum must be commended for its completeness. Unfortunately, that's just about all that can be said in its favour. It's about as shoddy a production as I've ever seen, right down to misprints on the insert and on one of the CDs itself. On the other hand, it's an extremely convenient bundle of objects that would otherwise take some effort to acquire separately. As a compilation of pretty much everything ever released under a band's name, Collection deserved better treatment and would probably have sold just as well as a proper box set. Which it damned well ought to have been. Good content.

KAREN ELSON - The Ghost Who Walks (2010) thumbup

Before Karen Elson became one of the most photographed women on the planet, wife to an influential rock star, and mother, she was a pale, gawky bird in Manchester, England, tormented by her classmates. Hence the name of the album, recalling one of the nicknames she was fitted with long ago. As it turns out, underneath Elson’s striking, otherworldly beauty and celebrated mane of fire-red hair lurked the heart and soul of a songwriter/murder balladeer, and the airy yet resonant voice of a promising singer. Now 31, and under the tutelage of husband Jack White, Elson has released her debut album, The Ghost Who Walks – a regal, gothic-folk affair of low-hung moons and murderous lovers.

On her debut disc, The Ghost Who Walks, Karen Elson spins intriguingly unsettling tales of lost love, dashed hope, romantic betrayal and various crimes of passion witnessed only by the full moon. Until now, the British-born Elson has been better known as a top model. The arrangements for her small band featuring the virtuosic Jackson Smith on guitar, Elson's longtime collaborator Rachelle Garniez on accordion and vocals, and husband-producer Jack White on drums. - amazon.com

V.A. - Timeless: A Tribute To Hank Williams (2001)

Like 1999's tribute to Gram Parsons, "Return of the Grievous Angel", this successful collection revives the tired "tribute" concept and applies it in homage to a key figure in country music. Interpreting songs from across Hank Williams's short and troubled career, a range of high-profile artists use different approaches with equally gratifying results. Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, and Hank Williams III play familiar songs with traditional arrangements (Ms. Crow's yodel is an eye opener); Beck, Mark Knopfler, and Keb' Mo' stay closer to their own idioms. Keith Richards's reedy vocal makes "You Win Again" all his own, and Bob Dylan, who has only rarely lent his services to these sorts of projects, leads his touring band through a blues shuffle on "I Can't Get You Off of My Mind." The estimable Lost Highway label has assembled an illustrious cast to sing the praises of the artist who inspired its name, and in doing so it has created a far better testament to its musical mindset than can ever be captured in the term Americana. - amazon.com

JACKSON BROWNE & DAVID LINDLEY - Love Is Strange (2010) thumbup

"Love Is Strange: En Vivo con Tino" is, simply put, a double CD that documents Jackson Browne's and David Lindley's short Spanish tour of 2006. But it's actually far more than that. While the song titles may be familiar to fans of both men, they don't begin to tell the musical story on display here. Lindley and Browne were accompanied on all dates by the great flamenco percussionist, rock drummer, and producer Tino di Geraldo, and on select concerts by well-known Spanish musicians flutist Carlos Nunéz, vocalists Kiko Veneno and Luz Casal, banduria player Javier Mas, and others. Beautifully recorded, this set shows what Browne is capable of when he has musical foils who will not allow him to simply rest on his laurels. Lindley is, as expected, brilliant in shaping the textures and surfaces of these songs as well as highlighting the more subtle melodic touches in them, and Di Geraldo's rhythmic interactions push these two to play at their level best. The interplay between him and Lindley is near symbiotic, even on the most basic of tunes like "Mercury Blues" or "For Taking the Trouble," where the percussionist plays tablas to Lindley's bouzouki. The Latinization of "El Rayo X," with Browne on a baritone guitar and stellar harmony vocals by Lindley is a high point. Lindley plays fiddle on "Take It Easy," and transforms it into something that envisions a Spanish bluegrass. "These Days," with Casal's heavily accented guest vocal, the fiddle, and di Geraldo's cajón, makes an already beautiful song exquisite. Lindley's Hawaiian guitar transforms "Running on Empty" from its former place as a rock anthem to '70s-era alienation into a haunted warning filled with regret and loss. A full-band performance of the nine-minute closer "The Next You Voice You Hear," featuring Veneno on duet vocals, also includes the cajón, tres player Raul Rodriguez, Hawaiian guitar, Charlie Cepeda on baritone guitar, and Nunéz's whistle. It becomes a dry, arid, funky blues that sends the whole package off on a soaring though lonesome note. This could have been an experiment that failed miserably, drenched in nostalgia and excess; instead, it succeeds grandly because of a sparse, tasteful approach with excellent arrangements and genuinely inspired performances. ~ cduniverse

DAVE EDMUNDS - The Many Sides Of Dave Edmunds: The Greatest Hits And More (2008)

The title of this Dave Edmunds compilation is an apt one. Over the course of his long career, he's played electric blues, progressive guitar hero rock, country, rockabilly, and pop, all with great aplomb, humor, and a sense of wit and wisdom in his productions. This European 20-track compilation offers all sides of that career, almost, since there are no Rockpile tracks, and puts them on display with such verve that it is irresistible, even if you already have virtually everything here. Indeed, this not only provides an excellent introduction to Edmunds as a picker, songwriter, and song interpreter, but also as a producer. Standout tracks? All of them. For the curious, this is the one to pick up, and for fans, this is the one to pop onto the portable music player or into the car's CD player. Perhaps best known for his vigorous re-interpretation of Aram Khachaturian's 'Sabre Dance' (as part of the group Love Sculpture), Dave Edmunds made a name for himself with the release of his number one single 'I Hear You Knocking', and both songs are included on this best of collection. Originally synonymous with the pub rock movement of the 1970s, Edmunds later went on to collaborate with many distinguished artists, including the Stray Cats (with whom he recorded the single'Race Is On', included here). Throughout this collection and all of his work, Edmunds' distinct musical personality makes itself known - but it is the solo material assembled herethat shows him in his purest form. - amazon.com

ROBIN TROWER - A Tale Untold: The Chrysalis Years 1973 - 1976 (2010)

Guitar hero Robin Trower, has often been compared to the late Jimi Hendrix, for his Strat-fueled bluesy/psychedelic style. Trower, launched his career in the 60s with band Procol Harum, he then went onto launch his solo career signed to Chrysalis records. Robin Trower initially found fame in the late 1960s as the guitarist with Procol Harum, recording six albums before embarking on a solo career in 1973. Forming the Robin Trower Band with Scottish bassist and vocalist James Dewar, formerly a member of Frankie Miller's band as well as Stone The Crows, and drummer Reg Isidore, this line-up recorded Trower's debut Twice Removed From Yesterday in 1973, followed by his breakthrough hit Bridge Of Sighs the following year. With a title track later covered by both Metallica and Opeth, the album was a US Top 10 hit. Reg Isidore was replaced by former Gypsy and Sly And The Family Stone drummer Bill Lordan for 1975's For Earth Below, which, like Robin Trower's previous three albums was produced by former Procol band-mate Matthew Fischer. Originally recorded for radio broadcast on the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation at Stockholm's Concert Hall on 3rd February 1975, Robin Trower Live captures the power trio at the height of their collective powers, with Dewar's bluesey vocals and Trower's Hendrix inspired guitar licks to the fore. This set is completed by their fifth release, 1976's Long Misty Days. A Tale Untold: The Chrysalis Years 1973-1976 is augmented by the rare b-side, 'Take A Fast Train', single edits of 'Day of The Eagle', and 'Long Misty Days', previously unavailable on CD, and finishes with the previously unreleased 'Let Me Be The One', a rare outtake from Long Misty Days.

This 3cd box set contains his five Chrysalis albums between 1973 -1976 plus bonus tracks – B'sides, out-takes, edits & previously unreleased tracks. - hmv.com
